Rough Justice Lyrics

One time you were my baby chicken
Now you've grown into a fox
Once upon a time I was your little rooster
But am I just one of your cocks

It's Rough Justice on ya
You're going to have to trust me
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

So put your lips to my hips, baby
And tell me what's on your mind
I know you've still got the animal attraction for me
It's been a long, long time

It's rough justice on ya
We never thought it risky
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

You're feeling loose and lusty
So if you really want me
Yeah, it's rough justice
And you know I'll never break your heart, yeah

It's rough justice on ya
You think you really sussed me
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

The first time I saw you, baby
You were springing like a young gazelle
And next thing I know, way down the road
You had me flying like a bat out of hell

It's rough justice on ya
Your eyes are too disgusted
You're going to have to trust me
But you know I'll never break your heart

I give you my positions
Don't want no oppositions
It's rough justice
But you know I'll never break your heart

Yeah
Come on baby

    Factory Girl Lyrics

Waiting for a girl who's got curlers in her hair
Waiting for a girl she has no money anywhere
    We get buses everywhere
    Waiting for a Factory Girl

Waiting for a girl and her knees are much too fat
Waiting for a girl who wears scarves instead of hats
Her zipper's broken down the back
    Waiting for a factory girl

Waiting for a girl and she gets me into fights
Waiting for a girl we get drunk on Friday night
She's a sight for sore eyes
    Waiting for a factory girl

Waiting for a girl and she's got stains all down her dress
Waiting for a girl and my feet are getting wet
    She ain't come out yet
    Waiting for a factory girl

    Factory Girl
  • This song is a great example of Mick Jagger taking on a persona, which he often did in his lyrics. Here, he sings from the perspective of a guy who is waiting for his girlfriend - a destitute, disheveled sort - to get out of work at the factory. It's quite a contrast to Jagger's reality: a glamorous Rock star who often dated models.
  • Dave Mason, who did some session work for Jimi Hendrix and was a member of the band Traffic, played the mandolin on this song.
  • Ric Grech was brought in to play fiddle on this track. Grech was a violinist and bass player who was a member of the band Family in the '60s and went on to play in Blind Faith with Eric Clapton. He also played on Gram Parsons' solo albums in the '70s, and he appears on Ron Wood and Ronnie Lane's 1976 Mahoney's Last Stand project.
  • Drummer Charlie Watts: "On Factory Girl, I was doing something you shouldn't do, which is playing the tabla with sticks instead of trying to get that sound using your hand, which Indian tabla players do, though it's an extremely difficult technique and painful if you're not trained."
  • Guitarist Keith Richards: "To me 'Factory Girl' felt something like Molly Malone, an Irish jig; one of those ancient Celtic things that emerge from time to time, or an Appalachian song. In those days I would just come up and play something, sitting around the room. I still do that today."

    Stupid Girl Lyrics

I'm not talking about the kind of clothes she wears
    Look at that Stupid Girl
I'm not talking about the way she combs her hair
    Look at that stupid girl

The way she powders her nose
Her vanity shows and it shows
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

I'm not talking about the way she digs for gold
    Look at that stupid girl
Well, I'm talking about the way she grabs and holds
    Look at that stupid girl

The way she talks about someone else
That she don't even know herself
She's the sickest thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

    Well, I'm sick and tired
And I really have my doubts
    I've tried and tried
But it never really works out

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
    Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
    Look at that stupid girl

It doesn't matter if she dyes her hair
Or the color of the shoes she wears
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up
    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up, shut-up
    Shut-up, shut-up, shut-up

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
    Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
    Look at that stupid girl

    She purrs like a pussycat
Then she turns 'round and hisses back
She's the sickest thing in this world
    Look at that stupid girl

    Stupid Girl
  • Keith Richards (1971): "Songs like "Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl" were all a spin-off from our environment - hotels, and too many dumb chicks. Not all dumb, not by any means, but that's how one got."
  • Mick Jagger (1995): "It's much nastier than Under My Thumb. Obviously, I was having a bit of trouble. I wasn't in a good relationship. Or I was in too many bad relationships. I had so many girlfriends at that point. None of them seemed to care they weren't pleasing me very much. I was obviously in with the wrong group"

  • This was originally recorded by Blues musician Slim Harpo, who was long a favorite of Mick Jagger. The Stones faithfully reproduced Harpo's version, even including all of his spoken asides. Mick Jagger didn't understand why listeners would choose the Stones version over Harpo's. He even stated in 1968, "I mean what's the point in listening to us do 'I'm A King Bee' when you can listen to Slim Harpo doing it?" (thanks, Joel - Chicago, IL)

    Saint Paul the persecutor
Was a cruel and sinful man
Jesus hit him with a blinding light
    And then his life began
    I said yeah
    I said yeah

    Augustin knew temptation
He loved women, wine and song
    And all the special pleasures
    Of doing something wrong
    I said yeah
    I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a Saint Of Me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
He'll never make a saint of me

And could you stand the torture
And could you stand the pain
Could you put your faith in Jesus
When you're burning in the flames

And I do believe in miracles
And I want to save my soul
    And I know that I'm a sinner
I'm gonna die here in the cold
I said yes, I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me

I thought I heard an angel cry
I thought I saw a teardrop falling from his eye

John the Baptist was a martyr
But he stirred up Herod's hate
    And Salome got her wish
To have him served up on a plate
    I said yeah
    I said yeah

I said yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah
You'll never make a saint of me
    Oh yeah, oh yeah

  • This song was written as a tribute to legendary R&B performer Billy Preston, who plays keyboards on this track. Preston has had a long history of run-ins with the law for charges such as assault and drug possession. The only man ever to have recorded songs with both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, Preston played the famous keyboard solo on the Fab Four's "Get Back." (thanks, Tony - Sunshine Coast, Qld, Australia)
  • Husband and wife duo Mark Gaillard and Mary Anderson sued The Stones, claiming that this was a rip-off of a song they wrote called "Oh Yeah." They claimed Stones engineer John Bernard was in the studio when they recorded "Oh Yeah" in 1996 and brought the idea to The Stones.
  • Meshell Ndegeocello played bass on this track. She had a popular song as a solo artist with "If That's Your Boyfriend (He Wasn't Last Night)" and played on sessions with Madonna and Indigo Girls. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

You love these toys, just go play out your feuds
Got no pride, don't know whose boots to lick
We act so greedy, makes me sick sick sick

So get up, stand up, out of my way
I want to talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, whose gonna pay
I want to talk to the man right away

    We walk the Highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
Hoping they don't catch the hell fire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

    We walk the highwire
Sending the men up to the front line
And tell 'em to hotbed the sunshine
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

Our lives are threatened, our jobs at risk
Sometimes dictators need a slap on the wrist
Another Munich we just can't afford
We're gonna send in the eighty-second airborne

Get up, stand up, who's gonna pay
I want to talk to the boss right away
Get up, stand up, outta my way
I want to talk to the man right away

    We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
And hoping they don't catch the shellfire
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

    We walk the highwire
Putting the world out on a deadline
Catching the bite on prime time
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

    Get up! Stand up!
    Dealer! Stealer!

    We walk the highwire
We send all our men into the front lines
We're hoping that we backed the right side
With hot guns and cold, cold nights

    We walk the highwire
We send all the men up to the front lines
And hoping they don't catch the hellfire
With hot guns and cold cold, cold, cold,

    I can't feel
    Feel a thing
    I can't shout
    I can't scream
    Breathe it out
    Breathe it in
    All this love
    From within

I won't cry when you say goodbye
    I'm Out Of Tears
I won't die when you wave goodbye
    I'm out of tears
    Out of tears

    I won't drink
    I won't eat
    I can't hear
    I won't speak
    Let it out
    Let it in
    All this pain
    From within
And I just can't pour my heart out
    To another living thing
    I'm a whisper
    I'm a shadow
But I'm standing up to sing

I won't cry when you say goodbye
    I'm out of tears
I won't die when you wave goodbye
I'm out of tears, yes I am
I won't cry, I swear my eyes are dry
    I'm out of tears
I won't cry, I'm going to tell you why
    I'm out of tears
    Out of tears
    Out of tears

    Let it out
    From within
    Some you lose
    Some you win
    I can drift
    I can dream
    Til I float
    Off your screen
And I just can't pour my heart out
    To another living thing
    I'm a whisper
    I'm a shadow
But I'm standing up to sing

I won't cry when you say goodbye

  • This was the first Stones single bass player Bill Wyman did not play on. Darryl Jones, who had played with Miles Davis and Sting, took over on bass when Wyman quit.
  • The video was directed by David Fincher, whose films include Se7en and The Social Network. The clip contains stunning visual effects, which were done at the Digital Domain studio and supervised by Fred Raimondi. Done in black-and-white, we see the band as giants stomping through New York City like Godzilla going through Tokyo - an image that was used in much of the promotional material for the Voodoo Lounge tour.

In later years, the size-disparity effect would become commonplace, but it was no easy feat in 1994, when such attempts usually ended up looking like the Beastie Boys clip for "Intergalactic." Using advanced compositing techniques, Fincher and Raimondi were able to place the human figures in the setting with an uncanny realism, using camera moves to keep it interesting. The video won the MTV award for Best Special Effects.
  • R&B producer Teddy Riley cut 4 mixes of this for a CD sampler.
  • This was the first single from Voodoo Lounge. The album won the first ever Grammy for Best Rock Album. It was the first album The Stones recorded without Bill Wyman, a founding member of the band. It was also the Stones' first release on Virgin Records. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

I can Almost Hear You Sigh
I can almost hear you cry
    On every crowded street
All the places we would meet

What will I do without ya
They say that life goes on
    I'm feeling sorry for myself
    I can't believe you're gone

And you acted much too calm
You turned on all the charm
You had a cold look in your eyes

I can feel your tongue on mine
    Silky smooth like wine
    I'm living with these memories
That's all that's left of you and me

I can almost hear you sigh
    Almost hear you cry
When you made sweet love to me
And you turned on all the charm
    Acted much too calm
You had a cold look in your eyes

    Did it mean nothing
    Was it all in vain
    Was I just your fool
    Or was the pleasure pain

    Have you set me free
    Or will I wake up
    In the morning
And find out it's been a bad dream

    Come on, I beg you
I want to be your main man

I can almost hear you sigh
    Almost hear you cry
When you make sweet love to me

    The fields of Eden
    Are full of trash
And if we beg and we borrow and steal
    We'll never get it back
    People are hungry
    They crowd around
And the city gets bigger as the country comes begging to town

    Stuck between a rock
    And a hard place
Between a Rock And A Hard Place

    This talk of freedom
    And human rights
Man's bullying and private wars and chucking all the dust into our eyes
    And peasant people
    Poorer than dirt
Who are caught in the crossfire with nothing to lose but their shirts, yeah

    Stuck between a rock
    And a hard place
Between a rock and a hard place
You'd better stop, put on a kind face
Between a rock and a hard place

    We're in the same boat
    On the same sea
    And we're sailing south
    On the same breeze
    Building dream churches
    With silver spires
    And our rogue children
    Are playing loaded dice

Between a rock and a hard place
    You'd better stop, yeah

    Give me the truth now
    Don't want no shame
I'd be hung drawn and quartered for a sheep just as well as a lamb

    Stuck between a rock
    And a hard place
A rock and a hard place

Someone woke me up this mornin'
    And I lit a cigarette
Found myself when I stopped yawnin'
    Started getting myself dressed

Then I felt that I had a dream
I remembered the things that I'd seen
I could still hear the things you said
With that bad dream in my head

It was a sad day, bad day
    Sad day, bad day

So I called you on the phone
And your friend said, "She's not home"
So I told her where I'd be at
And that you should call me back

Then I looked at the morning mail
I was not even expecting a bill
    Your letter a-started, "Dear"
And it left me with these tears

It was a sad day, bad day
    Sad day, bad day

Think of the times that we had rows
But we patched them up somehow
Think of the times I tried to go
But you screamed and told me no

There is only one thing in this world
    That I can't understand, that's a girl
I keep a-readin' the things you said
Like a bad dream in my head

It was a sad day, bad day
    Sad day, bad day

Oh, what a sad, sad old day
A sad old day, it was a sad old day
A sad old day, it was a bad old day
A sad old day, a bad old day

If there is one awful thing in this world

    Back To Zero
So you want to blow us all to pieces
Go meet your maker, head hung down
And give him all your explanations
    Go ahead, throw down
Back to zero, back to nothing
Straight to meltdown, back to zero
    That's where we're heading

It's a monkey living on my back
I can feel my spine begin to crack
    I'm looking to the future
    I keep on glancing back
    I prefer to rot
    I don't want to pop

I think I'll head back to the jungle, alright
Don't want to see no big bad rumble, too fright
Back to zero, that's where we're going
Back to nothing, right now, right now
    No heroes? No more heroes
    Back to meltdown
That's where I'm going, back to zero

My whole life is hanging on a thread
I'm the fly inside the spider's web
    I'm looking to the future
    I keep on glancing back
    I prefer to rot
    I don't want to pop

I worry about my great grandchildren
Living ten miles beneath the ground
I worry about their whole existence
The whole damn thing's in doubt
Back to zero, that's where we're going
Back to nothing, that's where we're heading
Straight to meltdown, that's where we're going
Back to zero, right now, right now

    We're going nowhere
    Right now, right now

    Girl you're too bad

  • The song was originally recorded by Jamaican reggae star Half Pint with the title of "Winsome." It was a big hit and his first #1 in his home country. Half Pint heard about the Stones covering his song from percussionist Sydney Wolfe who was at a studio in Holland when Keith Richards chose it. Wolfe relayed the news to Half Pint about the re-titled rock version. The Jamaican reggae star surmised in The Sunday Gleaner: "He (Richards) used to spend a lot of time in Jamaica. He probably was around when it was popular on the charts." Half Pint added that he finds it, "interesting still. They did it in a slow tempo way. That tempo was more like a ballad tempo, but you can hear the rock attitude. They had rock with a pop feel". He concluded that the song's reggae origins were not forgotten and the Stones also "did it in a way that you can realise it was a reggae song. It was not far from reggae, but you could hear the difference."
  • Keith Richards sang on this with Reggae star Jimmy Cliff. Cliff had a hit years later with "I Can See Clearly Now."
  • "Too Rude" was considered for the album title.

    Harlem Shuffle Lyrics

You move it to the left, yeah
    You go for yourself
You move it to the right
Yeah if it takes all night

    Now take it kinda slow
With a whole lot of soul
    Don't move it too fast
    Just make it last

You scratch just like a monkey
    Yeah you do real cool
You slide it to the limbo
Yeah how low can you go?

    Now come on baby
Don't fall down on me now
    Just move it right here
    To the Harlem Shuffle
Yeah yeah yeah to the Harlem shuffle
Yeah yeah yeah to the Harlem shuffle

    Hitch hitch hike baby
    Across the floor
    Whoa whoa whoa
I can't stand it no more

    Now come on baby
    Now get into your slide
    Just ride ride ride
    Little pony, ride!

Yeah yeah yeah do the Harlem shuffle
Yeah yeah yeah do the Harlem shuffle
    Do the Monkey shine
Yeah yeah yeah shake a tail feather baby
Yeah yeah yeah shake a tail feather baby

Yeah yeah yeah do the Harlem shuffle

  • The Harlem Shuffle is a dance that was popular in the '50s and '60s originating in Harlem ballrooms. Harlem is a section of New York City with a large black population. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • This was originally recorded by the R&B duo Bob and Earl in 1969. Their version, which was produced by Barry White, hit #7 in the UK. Keith Richards wanted to record this for quite a while. He would put the original version on demo tapes for Mick Jagger. The Bob and Earl version was sampled on the House Of Pain hit "Jump Around."
  • With the exception of the live cut "Going To A Go-Go," this was the first cover song The Stones released as a single since The Valentinos' "It's All Over Now" in 1964. Bobby Womack, the author and lead singer, sang backup on this and other songs on Dirty Work.
  • Backup singers included Womack, Tom Waits, Don Covay, and Patti Scialfa, who would later marry Bruce Springsteen.
  • Keith Richards said of this song in 1986: "I've been trying to get Harlem Shuffle on an album, without actually telling Mick, for 5 or 6 years. I thought that was a natural number for him to sing - it was made for him. I've been giving him cassettes with Harlem Shuffle stuffed in the middle somewhere for a long time, but I never got any real response. One night we were in the studio and Woody and I started plunking away at it. We were amazed at how simple the song was - about 2 chords. The band was just warming up on it, jamming, when Mick walked in and started singing. We realized, YEAH. And we did it in 2 takes. So it paid off eventually, though it cost me a fortune in cassettes."
  • Two extended versions were released as 12-inch singles, the "London Mix" and "NY Mix."
  • The video was one of the first to combine live action with animation. It opens with a cartoon featuring some cats going to a club, where the Rolling Stones are playing. The cartoon cats show up throughout the video. Ralph Bakshi and John Kricfalusi did the animation. Both artists pioneered adult animation and specialized in cats: Bakshi worked on Fritz the Cat, which was the first cartoon movie to get an X rating, and Kricfalusi drew for the raunchy cartoon Ren and Stimpy.

One Hit (To The Body) Lyrics

You fell out of the clear blue sky
    To the darkness below
The smell of your flesh excites me
    My blood starts to flow
    So help me God

You burst in in a blaze of light
    You unzippered the dark
One kiss took my breath away
One look lights up the stars

And it's it's one hit to the body
It comes straight from the heart
    One hit to the body
Sure went straight to the mark
    So help me God

It's one shot when you love me
One shot when you leave me
    I don't need no security
    I just need some peace

And it's one hit to the body
It comes straight from the heart
One voice calls out my name
It sure went straight to the mark

One punch and you knocked me down
    Tore my defenses apart
One round took me out of the game
You did me some permanent harm

    It took just one hit
    It took just one hit
    It ain't enough for me
    It ain't enough for me
    It ain't enough for me
    It's hurting me baby

Oh your love is a sweet addiction
I can't clean you out of my veins
    It's a life long addiction
    That has damaged my brain

It took just one hit to the body
    To tear my defenses apart
    One hit to the body
Sure went straight to the mark

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart
    One hit to the body
To the body, to the body
    Come straight from the heart

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart

    One hit to the body
And it comes straight from the heart
That's all it took, that's all it took

  • Jimmy Page played lead guitar. He was in the area because of Live-Aid, a huge benefit concert that reunited Led Zeppelin members Page, Robert Plant, and John Paul Jones. On this, Jimmy took the role of session guitarist, which he used to be. Jimmy Cliff, Patty Scialfa and Tom Waits also contributed to the album. (thanks, Joel - Chicago, IL)
  • Producer Steve Lillywhite's wife, Kirsty MacColl, sang backup. She also performed on "Harlem Shuffle."
  • The lyrics are not literal. The song is about a figurative punch from an emotionally charged love affair.
  • This opens with a clash of acoustic and electric guitars. The acoustic was Ron Wood's idea - he got a writing credit for it.
  • The video showed Mick Jagger and Keith Richards jabbing at each other. They were feuding at the time over Mick's solo career, so it wasn't much of a stretch.
  • When this album came out, a group called the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was trying to get any music they considered offensive banned from the airwaves. They came up with a list of 15 artists they really didn't like and called them the "Filthy 15." The Stones were a famous band with some raunchy songs, but the PMRC left them off this list, but did manage to include Sheena Easton and Cyndi Lauper. In order to stay out of the controversy, The Stones record label released this album in a wrapper that hid any offensive words.

Undercover Of The Night Song Chart
  • This song is about political corruption in Central America. The US was supporting Nicaraguan rebels (Contras) amid great controversy. It's a rare political song by The Stones.
  • A lot of production went into the track. There is a great deal of echo and phasing on the drums and guitars.
  • Mick Jagger wrote almost all of this. He said of the song: "I'm not saying I nicked it, but this song was heavily influenced by William Burroughs' Cities Of The Red Night, a free-wheeling novel about political and sexual repression. It combines a number of different references to what was going down in Argentina and Chile. I think it's really good but it wasn't particularly successful at the time because songs that deal overtly with politics never are that successful, for some reason." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Chuck Leavell, formerly of the Allman Brothers Band, played keyboards. He worked with The Stones throughout the '80s.
  • The video portrayed Mick Jagger as a rebel who is shot by Central American forces. This was a huge departure for the Rolling Stones, whose videos to that point consisted of performance footage with heavy preening by Jagger. It was directed by Julien Temple, who had done the Sex Pistols documentary The Great Rock And Roll Swindle. He revealed in I Want My MTV by Craig Marks: "I wrote the treatment for 'Undercover of the Night" as a way of not doing the video. I was a punk rocker, and the Stones were regarded as jet-set traitors to the cause. The song was about the death squads then operating in Central America, and I wrote an extreme treatment about being in the middle of an urban revolution, and dramatized the notion of Keith and Mick really not liking each other by having Keith kill Mick in the video. I never thought they would do it. Of course they loved it.

The video aired on MTV, but was turned down by some other outlets because of its violence.
  • This was the first single from Undercover.

Watching girls go passing by it ain't the latest thing
I'm just standing in a doorway
I'm just trying to make some sense
Out of these girls passing by, the tales they tell of men
I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just Waiting On A Friend

A smile relieves a heart that grieves, remember what I said
I'm not waiting on a lady, I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend

Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, yeah
Uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, yeah
Don't need a whore, don't need no booze, don't need a virgin priest
But I need some one I can cry to
    I need someone to protect

Ooh, making love and breaking hearts, it is a game for youth
But I'm not waiting on a lady
I'm just waiting on a friend
I'm just waiting on a friend, just waiting on a friend
Waiting on a friend, I'm just waiting on a friend

Waiting On A Friend Song Chart
  • This is a rare mature reflection from The Stones, as Mick Jagger sings about the values of friendship as opposed to women. Then again, it might be about drugs. Keith Richards was a heroin user at the time, and the song could be a euphemism for waiting on the "connection" - the man with the drugs. Should Keith (or in this case, Mick, as he is singing in the video) get questioned by the police, his response would be, "I'm just waiting on a friend." (thanks, Russell - High Desert, CA)
  • Originally Recorded in 1972 at the sessions for their album Goats Head Soup, this didn't make the cut but was repackaged and released on Tattoo You nine years later. Released as a single, it did very well in America thanks to the advent of MTV; the network launched in 1981 and was thrilled to have a new video by a rock band of The Stones' stature.
  • There are no musician credits on Tattoo You, but it is clear that Mick Taylor contributed on guitar, which he was not compensated for. Taylor fell into obscurity after leaving The Stones in 1974.
  • Think this is about waiting for a woman? Think again. Mick Jagger said in 1983: "Just let me be cynical for a moment. First of all, it's really NOT about waiting on a woman friend. It's just about a FRIEND; it doesn't matter if it's a man or a woman. I can see people saying, Oh, we're all much older now, Mick's writing this much more compassionate stuff, must be about a real person. But that's only in their perception of it." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The Stones hired Jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins to play on the Tattoo You album. He played on this as well as the tracks "Slave" and "Neighbors." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The video ran constantly on MTV. Directed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg, who did their Rock and Roll Circus special in 1968, it featured Jagger and Richards meeting on a New York City street, then going to a local bar to join the rest of The Stones. Reggae legend Peter Tosh is the Rasta sitting on the stoop with Mick Jagger. (thanks, Eli - Albuquerque, NM)
  • This also features Nicky Hopkins on piano, Jimmy Miller on percussion and Kasper Winding on tambourine. Winding was a Danish session drummer who played on the Tattoo You sessions. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Heaven Song Chart
  • Along with "Neighbors," this was one of two songs on Tattoo You recorded specifically for the album. The other tracks started as outtakes for other albums.

Tattoo You was the last time The Rolling Stones scored a #1 on the US albums chart, after a full decade of albums that reached the summit.
  • Keith Richards doesn't play on this track; their bass player Bill Wyman played guitar and also synthesizer and bass. Mick Jagger also played guitar on the track, and the only other performer was Charlie Watts on drums.
  • The vocals here peg this song as one of the most psychedelic the Stones ever did. The group had been gradually edging from pure blues to hard rock to psychedelic styles throughout the previous decade. Mick Jagger got quite creative with overdubbing and mixing on parts of the Tattoo You album.
  • The very concept of Heaven, an afterlife for humans presumed virtuous and pleasurable, seems built into the human psyche. It is a component of just about every major religion ever to take root in human history. However, this song seems to be talking only about sexual ecstasy.
