The Saga Begins Lyrics

A long long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy

Oh my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi,
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Did you know this junkyard slave
Isn't even old enough to shave
But he can use the Force they say
Ah, do you see him hitting on the queen
Though he's just nine and she's fourteen
Yeah, he's probably gonna marry her someday
Well, I know he built C3PO
And I've heard how fast his pod can go
And we were broke, it's true
So we made a wager or two
He was a prepubescent flyin' ace
And the minute Jabba started off that race
Well, I know who would win first place
Oh yes, it was our boy

We started singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
"Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

Now we finally got to Coruscant
The Jedi Council we knew would want
To see how good the boy could be
So we took him there and we told the tale
How his midi-chlorians were off the scale
And he might fulfill that prophecy
Oh, the Council was impressed, of course
Could he bring balance to the force?
They interviewed the kid
Oh, training they forbid
Because Yoda sensed in him much fear
And Qui-Gon said, "Now listen here
Just stick it in your pointy ear
I still will teach this boy"

He was singin' my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi,
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

We caught a ride back to Naboo
Cause Queen Amidala wanted to
I frankly would've liked to stay
We all fought in that epic war
And it wasn't long at all before
Little Hotshot flew his plane and saved the day
And in the end some Gungans died
Some ships blew up and some pilots fried
A lot of folks were croakin'
The battle droids were broken
And the Jedi I admire most
Met up with Darth Maul and now he's toast
Well, I'm still here and he's a ghost
I guess I'll train this boy

And I was singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi
Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"
We were singin', my my, this here Anakin guy
May be Vader someday later, now he's just a small fry
And he left his home and kissed his mommy goodbye
Sayin' "Soon I'm gonna be a Jedi"

The Saga Begins
  • This parody of Don McLean's song "American Pie" summarizes the movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in five-and-a-half minutes. It goes full-geek, getting into details like the journey to Coruscant and an encounter with Anakin at Tatooine.

The song is exceptionally long, but that's part of the joke: "American Pie" was one of the longest hit songs ever recorded, running 8:33.
  • This song was released before Star Wars: Episode I came out in theaters. Yankovic learned plot points by going online to check out spoilers for the movie.

George Lucas was OK with this, and happy to get the Weird Al treatment, as it built anticipation for the film.
  • Don McLean was pleased with the parody and even told Al that his lyrics sometimes enter his mind during concerts. Most of Al's fans had no knowledge of McLean's song from 1971, but the year after "The Saga Begins" was released, Madonna did a Dance cover of "American Pie." Many listeners wondered by Madonna was remixing a Weird Al song.

Ayo I’m goin' places, Dior home lacin' on occasions

Date four hoes, make her smile and make her moan though

I hate to say it a later moment I didn’t warn ya
    High roller, big spender
And my intentions to keep her on the sack, you just saks fifth her
I’m that different, this cat can react mad pimpish
    I gathered a couple hundred thousand, I can’t remember
They keep talkin' and we keep winning
Why niggas never say capisce until police chalk em
Because of my bitch that's talkin', givin' her head, the streets will follow
I come from a place where niggas my age ain't placed to see tomorrow
To each his own but each of them is known to steal or rob you
So chances over populated but know the seats in college
And those are the least of problems, I speak to God he says I’m alright
My visions funny, though 20-20’s my hindsight
Bad bitches with me, real niggas with me

    Simple Man
  • This self-reflecting track contains some witty borrowing from the late 2Pac's "How Do U Want It." Wale said to Complex Magazine of the late rapper: "Pac is still the most influential person in young, black culture because of the mentality he instilled and he's been gone for like 15 years now. By that I mean, the I.D.G.A.F. (I Don't Give A F--k) Attitude. He didn't really care about s--t. He was more for the people and I'm learning that. I put my music and the people first, that's where I'm at with it."
  • The song finds Wale stepping into the production ring. He is credited for supplying the head-nodding beat under the name "Ralph Folarin."
  • The video was shot in Toronto during the 2013 OVO Fest with Drake and J Cole, who make cameo appearances in the clip.

Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way? Lyrics

Lord it's the same old tune, fiddle and guitar
Where do we take it from here?
Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars
It's been the same way for years
    We need a change

Somebody told me, when I came to Nashville
Son you finally got it made
Old Hank made it here, and we're all sure that you will
But I don't think Hank done it this way
No, I don't think Hank done it this way

Ten years on the road, makin' one night stands
    Speedin' my young life away
Tell me one more time just so's I'll understand
Are your sure Hank done it this way?
Did ol' Hank really do it this way?

Lord I've seen the world, with a five piece band
Looking at the back side of me
Singing my songs, and one of his now and then
But I don't think Hank done 'em this way
I don't think Hank done it this way

    Sometimes I feel
    Like I need a vacation
    Sometimes I feel
    Like I want to go
    To the city of cavemen
    The city of Bedrock
    I'd be a Flinstone
    Now I'll tell you why

Well, I've got I've got a woman named Wilma
Well, I've got I've got a baby named Pebbles
Well, I've got I've got a doggy named Dino
We do a little bowling and we drink a little vino

Well, I've got a little buddy, Barney Rubble
Got a neighbor by the name of Barney Rubble
He's a midget but he makes a lot of trouble
Doesn't like to shave, he got caveman stubble

Me and Barney, Loyal Order Water Buffalo
Lodge brothers, Loyal Order Water Buffalo
There's a handshake everybody gotta know
How come grand Poo-Bah always gotta run the whole show?

Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
I get by on all my prehistoric knowhow

Betty and Barney got a baby named Bamm-Bamm
Little Pebbles is his number one fan
He's the strongest toddler in the whole land
Tear your arm off if he shakes your hand

Got a car, gonna push it with my feel now
Gonna take my family out to eat now
Jumbo ribs at the drive-in can't be beat now
Made from brontosaurus, baby, not a moo-cow

Want to chill with a Sabretooth Tiger
    Wear a loincloth, natural fiber
Be the first Rolling Stone subscriber
Got a pterodactyl for a windshield wiper

Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Yabba dabba, yabba dabba dabba do now
Don't know what it means but I say it anyhow

Luck me, workin' down in the gravel put
Movin' rocks, on a big dinosaur I sit
Mr. Slate gets mad and he throws a fit
Pull the birdie's tail, everybody knows it's time to quit

I realize I'm living in the Stone Age
    No fax, no cellular phone-Age
Pick my teeth with a dinosaur bone-Age
Liftin' heavy boulders every day for my wage

Barney Rubble, laughin' like a hyena
Barney Rubble, what a little weiner
    Where's Wilma? Anybody seen her?
Got a baby elephant vacuum cleaner

"He passed away early in our friendship. It was like losing a father for him. I remember talking to him, and making sure he was OK. There had been a lady who had taken care of him the last few weeks of his life, and she came to Keith and said 'A closed eye ain't sleeping, and a goodbye ain't always gone.' I don't really know what any of that meant in that setting, but it just stuck with me. I held on to it for a real long time, and we put that into the song."

    Corsicana Lemonade Lyrics

Been ten years but I was a young man.
Fifteen more and I'll be old.
Couple years I may be a rich man,
where it ends up I don't really know.

    Looking out your weathered windows,
reaching for what you can't hold.
Considering the ways that the wind blows,
where it ends up you don't really know.
You're just looking for a reason and a place to call your own.

Nacogdoches up to Lucas, could you pick a better place to lose some change?
Down in Kemah it might seem a little too long a walk out to La Grange.
Corsicana, they might slam you. You'll be thirsty for a glass of lemonade.
Try to slow down and hang around along the way.

    Looking out your weathered windows,
Reaching for what you can't hold.
Considering the ways that the wind blows,
where it ends up you don't really know.
You're just looking for a reason and a place to call your own.

From Odessa up to Dumas, could you pick a better place to lose some change?
In Abiline, it might seem like Uvalde couldn't be further away.
Waxahatcha they could catch you, chase you way back to Matagorta Bay.

Nacogdoches up to Lucas, could you pick a better place to lose some change?
Down in Kemah it might seem a little too long a walk out to La Grange.

    Corsicana Lemonade
  • This is the title track of the sixth full-length studio album by Texas band White Denim. The record is a love letter to the Lone Star state.
  • Corsicana is a small city located on Interstate 45, some fifty-five miles south of downtown Dallas and this song is littered with other references to places in the band's home state. "On the last tour we'd kill time in the van by going through the alphabet with Texas towns," vocalist James Petralli explained to The Guardian, "so it's like an inventory, although some of the references do have more significance; I went to school in Nacogdoches and Josh grew up in Waxahachie. Kemah is a really dirty Texas coastal town with a rundown amusement park, kind of like the worst Brighton you could imagine. So the song is me trying to excavate some kind of narrative out of that."

To Live And Die In LA
  • This is the title track to William Friedkin's 1985 crime drama To Live and Die in LA Wang Chung wrote the original score for the film (which included this song).
  • According to the DVD commentary on To Live and Die in L.A., director William Friedkin didn't want a theme song for the movie, but Jack Hues and Nick Feldman of Wang Chung wrote one anyway, which was this song. Friedkin liked it and decided to use it in his movie.
  • In an interview with Eric Greenberg on the Just My Show podcast, Jack Hues of Wang Chung explained: "It all has to do with the opportunity to explore a new genre. I started out just a kid in love with the Beatles music and learning to play guitar, but when I got around 18, I wanted to go to university. And at that time you had to do classical music if you wanted to do music in university. So I got into classical music, and that whole thing of long form composition - outside of a three-minute pop song - was something I really, really wanted to do. So the opportunity for To Live and Die in LA was ideal for me creatively. It gave me the chance to really expand ideas instead of always having to pare them down and try and fit them into that three-minute format."

Now the dead can't die, they're not alive

It's a curse, a hex, tell me what comes next
Tie the noose around my neck

See you in the graveyard at midnight
    Such a horrifying delight
Your ice-cold touch, it feels so right
    And just last night
I Walked With A Zombie, zombie, zombie
I walked with a zombie, zombie, zombie
    I walked with a zombie

Her stare is so demanding and her clothes are so commanding
She makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop
With my head on the butcher block
You're the only one for me, I'm in love with a decomposing zombie
Beauty's on duty in this horror movie
Make me spill my guts with just one touch

See you in the graveyard at midnight
    Such a horrifying delight
Your ice-cold touch, it feels so right
    And just last night
I walked with a zombie, zombie, zombie
I walked with a zombie, zombie, zombie
    I walked with a zombie

She makes me do everything she wants me to
And that's okay with me because I'm walking with a zombie

See you in the graveyard at midnight

    I Walked With A Zombie
  • This song was inspired by the 1943 movie I Walked With A Zombie, which is a favorite of Wednesday 13's. Explaining how the song came to him, Wednesday told us : "I was reading about it in a book, and I was just looking through this book and I was playing guitar. Somehow I just started singing what I was reading, and it just turned into that song. It turned out to be so catchy, and I did a demo of it immediately. I went, 'Whoa, this is like super horror pop punk,' or whatever you want to call it."

The song roughly follows the story of the film, which is about a woman who has entered some kind of trance-like state. Her caretaker brings her to a remote island, where a voodoo priest attempts a cure.
  • Wednesday 13 (real name: Joseph Poole) was ahead of the Zombie trend, releasing this song a few years before the hit TV series Walking Dead and the movie Zombieland. The first Wednesday 13 video was for this song, and it featured the band integrated into a horror film.

    Yesterday I went outside
    With my momma's mason jar
    Caught a lovely Butterfly

    When I woke up today
And looked in on my fairy pet
    She had withered all away
No more sighing in her breast
I'm sorry for what I did
I did what my body told me to
I didn't mean to do you harm
But everytime I pin down what I think I want
It slips away - the ghost slips away

I smell you on my hand for days
I can't wash away your scent
    If I'm a dog then you're a bitch

I guess you're as real as me
Maybe I can live with that
    Maybe I need fantasy
    A life of chasing Butterfly
I told you I would return
When the robin makes his nest
But I ain't never comin' back

    Butterfly
  • This is based on the opera Madame Butterfly. In the opera, which was written by Giacomo Puccini, B.F. Pinkerton is a Lieutenant in the US navy who goes to Japan and falls in love with a geisha. He impregnates her and after he leaves, she kills herself. In the song, the story is told through Pinkerton's point of view. Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo is a big opera fan.
  • This is a rare acoustic song by Weezer.
  • Rivers Cuomo told Rolling Stone magazine, June 26, 2008: "There are several melodies in these Japanese folk songs that I'm certain Puccini put in the Madame Butterfly opera. I, in turn, took some of Puccini's melodies and used them on Weezer's Pinkerton album."
  • Weezer recorded a new version of this song featuring harpist Allison Allport in support of relief efforts after a major 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. The track was made available for free download, with listeners asked to donate to the relief efforts.

Secret discussions about a first kiss
    But you were young
    And everything was new
Impatient to do things you couldn't do
    Oh, Pamela, Pamela
    You started to grow
Answers to questions you wanted to know

When the rest of your childhood
    Forgets as a dream
    And the harshness of life
    Dims those peaches and cream

When Laurel and Hardy were shown at the flicks
With sticky red lollies on splintery sticks
Pigtails and ribbons and crushes on miss
Secret discussions about a first kiss
    But you were young
    And everything was new
Impatient to do things you couldn't do

  • This early Graham Gouldman composition was recorded by Wayne Fontana. Backed by "Something Keeps Calling Me Back," it was Fontana's last hit.

Graham Gouldman was born in 1946, and although Laurel & Hardy made their last film appearance in 1951, it is unlikely Gouldman intended the line alluding to them to be taken literally ("When Laurel & Hardy were shown at the flicks...). Rather, this is a song about nostalgia, what for some people may truly be the happiest days of their lives - schooldays - but only for some. A parallel can be found in the epic song "Love Chronicles" in which Al Stewart recalls the first time he ever kissed a girl, in his kindergarten arithmetic class.

    Strike Back Lyrics

You want to push me like I don't mind
You want to break me but not this time
You underestimate the moment you shove
You've got no idea what I'm capable of
    No, no you don't

You think I'm going to back down
    You better think again
    I've always said
The bigger they are, the harder they fall
    You're going to suffer
Hit me, I'll hit back harder
The bigger you are, the harder you fall
    It's your darkest hour
Hit me, I hit you harder
When my back's against the wall
I Strike Back, I strike back, I strike back
When my back's against the wall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back

You are the darkness and I am the light
You are the fallen and Heaven don't lie
So, so, so step back you're crossing the line
If I told once I've told you one thousand times
    No, no you don't

You think I'm going to back down
    You better think again
    I've always said
The bigger they are, the harder they fall
    You're going to suffer
Hit me, I'll hit back harder
The bigger you are, the harder you fall
    It's your darkest hour
Hit me, I hit you harder
When my back's against the wall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back
When my back's against the wall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back

    Strike back

The bigger they are, the harder they fall
The bigger they are, the harder they fall
You've got my back against the wall
You've got my back, you're going to fall

The bigger they are, the harder they fall
    You're going to suffer
Hit me, I'll hit back harder
The bigger you are, the harder you fall
    It's your darkest hour
Hit me, I hit you harder

    The bigger they are
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back
    The harder they fall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back
The bigger you are, (the bigger you are) the harder you fall
When my back's against the wall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back
When my back's against the wall
I strike back, I strike back, I strike back

    Strike Back
  • The Nashville based Christian Rock band We As Human are centered around lead singer Justin Cordle. The group also features guitarists Jake Jones and Justin Forshaw, bassist Dave Draggoo, and drummer Adma Osborne. This is the lead single from their debut album, which was produced by Howard Benson (Skillet, Red, P.O.D., Flyleaf).
  • Cordle wrote this song after coming off the tail end of a huge tour, when he felt like he had nothing left. He recalled to Loudwire : "We had been writing a lot and we were at the end of the process and I was in California with my buddy Scott [Stevens} doing some co-writes and I told Scott, 'Man, I don't know if I have any words left.' And he said that we should spend the last couple of days writing songs," he recalled. "So the last two days, we were in the studio in Hollywood and we wrote 'Strike Back' and 'We Fall Apart' together."

"'Strike Back' really kind of came out of desperation," Cordle continued. "Growing up and learning how to be a musician, I kind of felt like an outcast in my town to be honest. I was a weirdo, and I just had a lot of people who didn't understand what I did or why I loved music so much or why I wanted to do that. So I faced a lot of kickback from people who thought I should just knuckle down and get a real job. But I couldn't just let it go. So there were a lot of guys who were musicians and talked about our guys behind our back and we've all had that. Or there were people who just think you should do more with your life and I don't know why, maybe they didn't get enough hugs, but they just want you to fail. So I just took all of that and decided to write a song to empower people that were going through hard times like that and let them know that you can get through no matter what you're facing, you know."

"That's kind of the story behind 'Strike Back' lyrically," Cordle concluded. "And then the music track was just Scott and I throwing down some guitars trying to create the most in-your-face, kicking rock tune."

    Take the Bullets Away Lyrics

I've got my finger on the trigger
    One bullet in the gun
    And I'm spinning the revolver
Thinking this could be the one

    I tried to find religion
    To see what I'd become
I was ruined by the world
But I blamed it on the son

    Am I worthless?
    Am I filthy?
Am I too far gone for a remedy?
    Will you help me?
    'Cause I'm dying
To be something more than a memory
    If I reach out
    Can I trust you?
Will you help me see the light of one more day?
    Take the Bullets Away
    Take the bullets away

    I've tried to build resistance
I've tried to start a war
    But no one ever listened
    I've battled with the storm

    Am I worthless?
    Am I filthy?
Am I too far gone for a remedy?
    Will you help me?
    'Cause I'm dying
To be something more than a memory
    If I reach out
    Can I trust you?
Will you help me see the light of one more day?
    Take the bullets away

    You're so disarming
    There's nothing left to fear
    You're so disarming
I'd drop all my weapons to show you that I'm not afraid
    Take the bullets away
    Take the bullets away

    Am I worthless?
    Am I filthy?
Am I too far gone for a remedy?
    Will you help me?
    'Cause I'm dying

    Take the Bullets Away
  • This plea for God to remove the weapons of our own self destruction features former Flyleaf lead singer Lacey Sturm as guest vocalist. We as Human vocalist Justin Cordle told Loudwire about the collaboration: "I was really torn about it actually," he admitted. "I absolutely love her vocal, but her screams were so good that she made my screams sound feminine. So I wasn't too excited about that. [laughs] But she did awesome, man. Her screams still give me goosebumps. When I listen to 'Take the Bullets Away,' she absolutely killed it on that track."

"I was just sitting at my house waiting for a response and hoping she likes it and she called me," continued Cordle. "We'd known Lacey for a couple of years at that point and loved everything she'd done with Flyleaf and when she called me back she had nothing but great things to say about it. And we were actually in the studio when she recorded her part. She actually flew from Pittsburgh, where she lives, to L.A., for one day, just to do that song for us and it was really cool for her to do that for us. And I think 'Take the Bullets Away' is probably my favorite song on the record right now."

  • This song - if it can be called that - was written to expose the scam of fake fans, fake likes and astronomically inflated hits on social media sites. It appears to have been a collaborative effort by a team put together by documentary maker Chris Morris for the Channel 4 Dispatches series in the UK. It remains to be seen if any of its contributors would want a writing credit. The team began writing the "song" at 3pm and recorded it an hour later. In less than five months it ran up over a hundred thousand hits on YouTube, and around another four thousand in less than two weeks after the documentary was screened.

Undone - The Sweater Song Lyrics

    Undone - The Sweater Song
  • This song is about going insane in public. Here's some lyric analysis:

"If you want to destroy my sweater, hold this thread as I walk away" - Keep doing what you're doing as I drift further into insanity.

"Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked" - Watch me drift into insanity, I'll soon be there, "naked" being full insanity.

"Lying on the floor, I've come undone" - Lying on the floor, I've become mentally undone.
  • The opening dialogue is used to show how he is at a party, losing it, and no one notices or cares. The two verses are used to show how he's barely able to think and talk straight on his descent. The part about "I don't want to destroy your tank-top" is showing how other people are on the brink of insanity already, but he's not "pushing them off" like they are to him; then, "To see you lying there in your Superman skivvies" shows how everyone is on the brink of insanity to begin with, even more so then he was in his "sweater." The music helps illustrate the ever-maddening mind of the guy, as it starts out normal, then at the end is hard, dark, and mad-sounding, showing his slow descent into madness.
  • Many of the promotional singles sent to radio stations contained an edit that cut the guitar solo short. This was a distribution error, but it didn't have much effect because most radio stations played the album version.
  • This was the first Weezer song that Rivers Cuomo ever wrote, back in 1991. Three years later it was released as the band's first single.
  • Cuomo told Rolling Stone: "I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you're just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn't until years after I wrote it that I realized it's almost a complete rip-off of 'Sanitarium' by Metallica. It just perfectly encapsulates Weezer to me - you're trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously."
  • Cuomo told Billboard magazine: "It's been the case since our first album that people thought we were just being sarcastic and ironic. When I wrote 'The Sweater Song,' to me it was a very sad song about depression, and people heard it on the radio and thought it was hysterical."
  • This was used on the MTV series Undressed in the 1999 episode "If Words Could Kill #2."

    Wanderlust
  • This sprawling tune lined with creeping synths was premiered on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show on January 7, 2014. Bassist Tom Fleming told NME: "We wanted people to think, 'S--- have I put the right record on?' It's a big sounding song about protecting what you've got and grabbing things by the balls."
  • The lyric, "In your mother tongue, what's the verb 'to suck'?" is a shot at British bands who are captivated with copying their American counterparts rather than pursuing their own ideas.

The band were horrified that the line was interpreted by some as an attack on Domino labelmates Arctic Monkeys. "I had to phone up the label to apologise and explain that I was not slagging off the flagship band," singer Hayden Thorpe told The Guardian. "Also, they're on the radio singing about settees in a Yorkshire accent; that's the home team!"
  • Vocalist Hayden Thorpe explained the song's meaning to DIY magazine: "It's a song about us as a band," he said. "It's a statement about our ideals, who we are as people and as a gang. It's almost a re-imagining of the initial things that threw us together when we were teenagers. We had these grievances, feelings of a power struggle, things we wanted to stomp all over."
  • The song is a mission statement for the band. "From the Stone Age to now, we judge our whole past by the culture people have left behind," Thorpe told NME. "'Wanderlust' is almost a kind of war cry, asking, is this the best we've got – kids singing in accents that aren't their own, singing about lives that aren't theirs, and reaping huge rewards from it?"

"So little is done with so much privilege – music is really a class thing, because if where I'm glad government that is making people pay £9000 a year for university, then it's only the rich kids who will get to arts and music school," continued Thorpe. "We're talking about such a small group of people who are gonna create work that is supposed to define all tell us what our lives are. It's a very scary prospect."
  • Fleming explained the meaning of the Present Tense album title to HMV.com . "This record is about playing with now, people's inability to live in the present and not either dwell on the past or obsess about the future," he said. "This record is about memory and trying not to long for things that either didn't happen or will never happen."

    The Greatest Gift
  • Seattle singer Michael "Wanz" Wansley was a full-time software test engineer for companies such as Microsoft, Adapx, and Volt until he was asked to provide guest vocals on Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' international hit single "Thrift Shop." This is the closing track from Wanz's debut solo EP, Wander.
  • Wanz told Artist Direct the story behind the song in an January 2014 interview: "'The Greatest Gift,' was written and recorded in two days last year," he recalled. "Success with 'Thrift Shop' hadn't hit monetarily and touring monies kept me afloat, but there was no extra to buy Christmas gifts."

" I would watch commercial after commercial of folks buying things, see them in line at the stores and listen to their conversations about what to give someone...feeling 'less than' during the whole process," he continued. "But figured that if I could put the 'Christmas Spirit' into song, that would be a great gift."

"It took about an hour for me to come up with chords and a melody," Wanz added. "When I started putting the beat together is when I realized I was creating my own present. One that I could give to everyone and anyone! The time I was putting into this song was my gift!!! And since time is the only thing none of us can replace, I wanted to convey that we all do the best we can with the time we have and that helping someone, listening to someone, being there for someone is the greatest feeling and the greatest gift we can give to each other. Hence the title, 'The Greatest Gift.'"
