Five To One Lyrics

Five To One Song Chart
  • "Five to one" was the approximate ratio of whites to blacks, young to old, and non-pot smokers to pot smokers in the US in 1967. It was also the amount of Vietnamese to American soldiers in Vietnam, although Jim Morrison said the lyrics were not political. (thanks, Coleman - Richmond, VA)
  • Jim Morrison was so drunk when he recorded this song, he needed help from the studio staff on when to begin singing. If you listen closely, you can hear someone in the background say "One more time" before Jim starts his first verse. (thanks, Jeff - wyckoff, NJ)
  • Morrison got the idea for this while waiting in the audience before performing a concert in 1967.
  • On bootlegs of live recordings, Morrison included the phrase "f--ked up" in the spoken word section at the end. He swore a lot at live shows, but the studio albums were always curse-free.
  • The part of the song about "Shadows of the evening" is an adaptation of the Victorian-era hymn "Shadows of the Evening," whose first verse is:

    Now the day is over
    Night is drawing nigh
    Shadows of the evening
    Steal across the sky
    (thanks, Jamie - Perth, Australia)
  • Robby Krieger recorded a version of this with Marilyn Manson for the 2000 Doors tribute album Stoned Immaculate .
  • In 2000, the surviving members of the Doors taped a VH1 Storytellers episode with guest vocalists filling in for Morrison. Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland sang on this track.
  • Jay-Z sampled this on his 2000 song "Takeover." The track was produced by Kanye West, who often uses old rock or R&B songs in rap records.
  • The lyrics, "No one here gets out alive" were used for a Jim Morrison biography by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman. (thanks, bob - Laguna Beach, CA)
  • Mos Def sampled this track on his 2004 release "The Rape Over" from his album The New Danger. Mos Def's song contains the bass line and drums with Jim Morrison's "Come On!" at the beginning of the track. Though "Five to One" is not a political statement per say; Mos Def's "The Rape Over" directly hits the capitalist blows against the minorities of the US. (thanks, Kay - Costa Mesa, CA)

  • "Free My Love" is the tenth track on DEC3's 2014 debut self-titled album. It was written by DEC3's primary songwriter, Jon Haber . Even though Haber walked away from performing at the age of 24 to open his successful New York instrument retail chain, Alto Music, he never stopped writing songs.

"Free My Love" was the first tune that Haber and longtime vocal collaborator, Chris Saulpaugh, worked on together in 1997. When Haber decided to start the DEC3 project in February of 2013, "Free My Love" was one of the old songs that Haber re-did for the album. He even changed the lyrics and title. Haber only kept a couple of parts and a guitar solo from the original recording.
  • In our interview with Haber, he explained the story happening in the song. "Basically, the guy had two loves in his life: his girl and then drugs or alcohol. The guy's in jail and that's the imagery I'm trying to portray," he said.

It is a dark tune displaying that the man made the wrong choice between his loves, but he would still make that same choice again despite the outcome.

    Hello I Love You Lyrics

Hello I Love You Song Chart
  • Jim Morrison wrote this in 1965 after seeing a beautiful woman walking on the beach. He thought up the song and wrote it that night. The song was not recorded until three years later.
  • Many fans considered this a sellout to Top 40 music. It was very radio-friendly, and not as deep or offensive as previous Doors songs.
  • This was one of six songs recorded for a demo the Doors recorded in 1965. Robby Krieger had not yet joined the band.
  • The music is similar to The Kinks' song "All Day And All Of The Night." So similar, that The Doors paid royalties from the British single to The Kinks after the threat of legal action.

Looking back, Ray Davies was philosophical about the episode, recalling to Mojo magazine September 2012: "The funniest thing was when my publisher came to me on tour and said The Doors had used the riff for 'All Day And All Of The Night' for 'Hello, I Love You.' I said rather than sue them, can't we just get them to own up? My publisher said, 'They have, that's why we should sue them!' (laughs) Jim Morrison admitted it, which to me was the most important thing. The most important thing, actually, is to take (the idea) somewhere else."
  • Robby Krieger ran his guitar through a fuzz box to get a distorted effect like Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love."
  • The line "Queen of the angels" refers to Los Angeles, the "City of Angels." The Doors were from LA.
  • This was the first Doors song that was successful in Europe.
  • The R.E.M. song "Pop Song '89" is a play on this. Instead of talking about sex, they talk to the girl about politics and the weather.
  • This song was used both in the movies Platoon and Casualties of War. (thanks, Lance - Malibu, CA)

Elvis at the Wheel Song Chart
  • Al told his audience that the song is based on a weird time in the life of Elvis during the '60s rock revolution. The cloud incident that the song relates is true. It led Elvis to an intense religious experience and to his serious contemplation of becoming a Christian monk - an idea which perturbed his "entourage." Al, in fact, read of it in Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick. (thanks, Robert - Long Beach, CA)
  • The lyrics relay how Elvis once saw a vision of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin in the clouds during a drive through Arizona:

    He's looking up
The sky has something to reveal

It is the face of Joseph Stalin
That is formed by drifting clouds
  • A music video, directed by Bruce D. Northey, was filmed in Arizona in 2013. It closely follows the story presented in the lyrics, with Stewart visiting an independent bookstore and reading the story of Elvis's vision in Careless Love.

  • Jim Morrison wrote the lyrics while he was living on a rooftop in Venice Beach, California. At night everything was clear, so he would look into peoples windows, study what they were doing, and watch their TV sets. (thanks, Shelby - Lincoln City, OR)
  • Jim Morrison recited this as a poem to Ray Manzarek when they ran into each other on a beach in Southern California in 1965. Manzarek, who knew Morrison from UCLA film school, thought it was great and convinced him to form a band.
  • This was the first song recorded by The Doors. It was left off their first album because they felt it wasn't good enough. Speaking with Gibson.com in a 2011 interview, Manzarek recalled there was chemistry straight away: "I knew instantly we had found 'it,' that indefinable, transcendent something that Kerouac refers to," he said. "I remember showing Robby the chord changes for a simple 'G' progression. He pulled out his bottleneck and said, 'I've got an idea for this, something sort of liquid-like.' A lot of The Doors music came to be like that – water-y. That came from living on the beach. We were actually there, whereas even The Beach Boys, for instance, didn't really live on the beach."
  • The Doors started recording this as more of a Blues song. Ray Manzarek got the idea during recording to do it as "a rock tango."
  • The lyrics are about a tryst on the beach under the moonlight.
  • This was one of 6 songs The Doors recorded for a demo at Aura records in 1965. They didn't get a record deal out of it, but signed with Elektra 2 years later.
  • This was released as the B-side of "Love Me Two Times."

  • This song finds Stuart Murdoch appealling for inspiration and receiving the reply: "Be popular, play pop, and you will win my love." It was the first song he wrote for The Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance and it came to the Belle & Sebastian frontman in 2014 during a day off in Switzerland at the end of the band's summer shows. He explained to Uncut: "I was in Switzerland at the end of the tour with the band thinking, 'Gosh... I have to write! I have no idea where these songs are gonna come from.' And I felt like a pleading to 'the muse.' It's not far away from the sentiment of an Abba song, you know, 'Thank You For The Music'. I'm flirting with the spirit of music."
  • Murdoch told the story of the song to Drowned in Sound : "I had borrowed a bike and was exploring the numerous paths that weaved around Zurich. I fund a nice warm leafy spot and began thinking about the upcoming album. I had a couple of songs lying around, but I knew I would have to get a pile more from somewhere."

"I know that I'm always saying that songs come from somewhere else, but I really believe it. Songs usually come to me just as I wake up, melody and rhythm at least, sometimes the whole thing."

"So while I sat there beside the allotments of Zurich, eating plums from the overhanging branches, I thought about trying to summon the Muse."

"I thought I could use flattery: I would write a song about waiting for the Muse to arrive. I would beseech her to show herself, knowing that the music wouldn't be any good unless she brought her magic."

"So I wrote the words down, and the song became 'The Everlasting Muse.' And it might seem like an outlandish conceit, but really, I would be nowhere without music."
  • Here are some more songs inspired by or written in Switzerland:

"The Swiss Maid" by Del Shannon (This Roger Miller-penned song is about a Swiss maiden, who is unable to find true love).

"For No One" by The Beatles (Written by Paul McCartney sitting in a chalet while on holiday with his girlfriend Jane Asher in Klosters, Switzerland).

"Smoke On The Water" by Deep Purple (Inspired by a fire in the Casino at Montreux, Switzerland which left a layer of smoke that covered Lake Geneva).

"A Winter's Tale" by Queen (Freddie Mercury's lyrics were inspired by the view through the window at Queen's recording studio on Lake Geneva, Switzerland. He composed the song just two weeks before his death).

"William Tell" by Gioachino Rossini (An opera in four acts, the four hour work tells the story of the legendary Swiss 14th century bowman. The opera is best known for the high-energy galloping finale of its overture, which was famously used in the The Lone Ranger TV and radio shows).

    Thick as a Brick Lyrics

Really don't mind if you sit this one out.

My words but a whisper your deafness a SHOUT.
I may make you feel but I can't make you think.
Your sperm's in the gutter your love's in the sink.
So you ride yourselves over the fields and
You make all your animal deals and
Your wise men don't know how it feels to be Thick as a Brick.
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away in
    The tidal destruction
    The moral melee.
The elastic retreat rings the close of play as the last wave uncovers
    The newfangled way.
But your new shoes are worn at the heels and
Your suntan does rapidly peel and
Your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick.

And the love that I feel is so far away:
I'm a bad dream that I just had today and you
    Shake your head and
    Say it's a shame.

Spin me back down the years and the days of my youth.
Draw the lace and black curtains and shut out the whole truth.
Spin me down the long ages, let them sing the song.

Thick as a Brick Song Chart
  • This was the only song on the album. Side 1 was "part 1," running 22:31, and side 2 was "part 2," clocking in at 21:05. Each side was over 20 minutes long.

A radio edit, running just 3:01, was sent to radio stations and is the version used on most compilation albums. Speaking with us in 2013, Ian Anderson explained: "back in 1972, you had to be aware of what was then called AOR radio - it was a delicate beast. It could only in most cases manage to play music that was in bite size portions. So we had to think about giving the option to American radio playing little edited sections of 'Thick As A Brick,' so they didn't have to delicately drop the needle into the middle of a long track or lift it off after the three and a half minutes. So we did that specially for American radio.

It was never released publicly in that form, but in limited editions which were sent out to radio stations in the US, which is the only place where the record got played, anyway. It never got played in the UK or anywhere in Europe, it was just not that kind of music."
  • "Thick as a brick" is a phrase meaning stubbornly dumb, as one's head is so thick that no new thoughts can enter it. The song starts with Ian Anderson expressing his low expectations for his target ("I may make you feel but I can't make you think") before singing about class structures, conformity, and the rigid moralistic beliefs of the establishment that perpetuates it.

The song follows a young boy who sees two career paths: soldier and artist. He chooses the life of a soldier, just like his father. We see him assimilate into the society he once rebelled against, becoming just like his dad.
  • With minimal meddling, the album took only two weeks to record, and was written in less than a month. The packaging was designed to look like a small-town newspaper called the St. Cleve Chronicle and Linwell Advertiser. When opened, the album revealed 12 pages of newspaper stories, making innovative use of the square foot of sleeve space with a fold-out so the Chronicle measured 12"x16".

Under the headline "Thick As A Brick," we learn that an 8-year-old boy genius named Gerald Bostock wrote the lyrics for a poetry competition, but was disqualified on moral grounds by the governing body, The Society for Literary Advancement and Gestation (SLAG). According to the story, Ian Anderson of the "Major Beat Group" Jethro Tull read the poem and wrote 45 minutes of "pop music" to accompany it.

The newspaper also contained ads, recipes, TV listings, a crossword puzzle, and a review of the album. Jethro Tull wasn't the first to use the newspaper theme for album art: The Four Seasons 1969 album Genuine Imitation Life Gazette was made to look like a newspaper with lyrics to the songs appearing as stories. It even had a comics-section insert.
  • In 2012, Ian Anderson recorded a sequel called Thick As A Brick 2 - Whatever Happened To Gerald Bostock? The album presents various outcomes for the now 48-year-old Bostock, including banker, preacher, soldier, and shop owner. Anderson says the album examines how "our own lives develop, change direction and ultimately conclude through chance encounters and interventions, however tiny and insignificant they might seem at the time."

Anderson had never performed the original Thick As A Brick in its entirety, but later in 2012, he began a tour where he played the entire album and its sequel.
  • This continued an experimental phase for Jethro Tull. Their previous album, Aqualung, was considered a "concept" album, with characters and themes continuing from one song to the next. This was considered "progressive" rock, with very obtuse lyrics and a great deal of production. This song seems to be a commentary on modern society and the human condition.
  • In 2001, this was used in a Hyundai commercial. Group leader Ian Anderson recorded a new version for the spot to avoid having other musicians butcher his song, as is often the case in commercials. He improvised an outro which he felt was the best part, but it was edited out. Anderson does not drive a Hyundai. He calls himself a "professional passenger."
  • This appears in an episode of The Simpsons where Lisa goes to the "Boy's School." (thanks, Jimmy - Upton, MA)
  • In the digital age, an album containing just one song doesn't fit the download model. When the 40th Anniversary Special Edition was released in 2012, Ian Anderson divided the album into 8 different pieces that could be sold individually on iTunes and Amazon as $1.29 songs with titles like "The Poet and the Painter" and "See There a Man Is Born/Clear White Circles." "Some artists choose not to do that - famously Pink Floyd - and don't want to have their music unbundled to offer it in song length pieces," Anderson told us. "But I accept that that's the musical appetite of most folks these days. They don't really have the time or the concentration to listen to a whole album in one go. They want it in manageable pieces."

    All the bitter weary ways
    Endless striving day by day
You barely have the strength to pray
    In the valley low

And how hard your fight has been
    How deep the pain within
Wounds that no one else has seen
    Hurts too much to show

All the doubt you're standing in between
And all the weight that brings you to your knees

    He Knows
    He knows
    Every hurt and every sting
    He has walked the suffering
    He knows
    He knows
    Let your burdens come undone
Lift your eyes up to the one
    Who knows
    He knows

We may faint and we may sink
Feel the pain and near the brink
But the dark begins to shrink
When you find the one who knows

The chains of doubt that held you in between
One by one are starting to break free

    He knows
    He knows
    Every hurt and every sting
    He has walked the suffering
    He knows
    He knows
    Let your burdens come undone
Lift your eyes up to the one
    Who knows
    He knows

Every time that you feel forsaken
Every time that you feel alone
He is near to the brokenhearted
    Every tear
    He knows

    He knows
    Every hurt and every sting
    He has walked the suffering

  • Jeremy Camp shared the personal story behind this song with NewReleaseTuesday : "A couple of years ago I released a book called I Still Believe," he explained. "From that, I shared more in-depth about what the Lord has done in my life, and more and more people have shared their stories with me. They have asked me questions about how I've managed with what I've been through, and they want to know how to deal with their issues."

"You want to say the right things, but you realize that everyone's pain is different," Camp continued. "I can share some Scriptures, and tell people what the Lord has taught me, but it is the Lord that does the work. I can point people to Jesus and God's Word, but that is all I can do."

"I remember when I was sitting down to write songs for this album, and 'He Knows' was the first song I wrote," he added. "I was with a friend and shared with him that there's more of my testimony of what God has done in the depths of my soul that I want to bring out. What came out was that I realized that as much as I share, it is God who knows what we are going through and what we need."
