Love Rescue Me Lyrics

Love rescue me
Come forth and speak to me
Raise me up and don't let me fall
No man is my enemy
My own hands imprison me
Love rescue me

Many strangers have I met
On the road to my regret
Many lost who seek to find themselves in me
They ask me to reveal
The very thoughts they would conceal
Love rescue me

And the sun in the sky
Makes a shadow of you and I
Stretching out as the sun sinks in the sea
I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
Said, love rescue me

In the cold mirror of a glass
I see my reflection pass
See the dark shades of what I used to be
See the purple of her eyes
The scarlet of my lies
Love rescue me

Yea, though I walk
In the valley of shadow
Yea, I will fear no evil
I have cursed thy rod and staff
They no longer comfort me
Love rescue me
Sha la la, sha la la la
Sha la la la, ha la la
Sha la la la, sha la la la
Sha la la la, sha la la
Sha la la la, sha la la la
Sha la la
I said love, love rescue me

I said love
Climb up the mountains, said love
I said love, oh my love
On the hill of the son
I'm on the eve of a storm
And my word you must believe in
I said love, rescue me
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah

Yeah I'm here without a name
In the palace of my shame
I said love rescue me

I've conquered my past
The future is here at last
I stand at the entrance
To a new world I can see
The ruins to the right of me
Will soon have lost sight of me
Love rescue me

  • Bob Dylan helped Bono write this. As he wrote it, Bono thought it may have been a Bob Dylan song he had heard. He asked Dylan, who told him it wasn't and helped him finish it.
  • Bono started writing this while staying with The Edge at his place in Los Angeles. After The Edge moved out, the Menendez family moved in. Eric and Lyle Menendez killed their parents there in 1989 and were sentenced to life.
  • Bob Dylan recorded a vocal track, but it was not used because of contractual obligations to The Traveling Wilburys, a group Dylan was playing in with George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne.
  • U2 recorded this at Sun Studios in Memphis during their 1987 US tour. Sun is considered by many to be the "Birthplace of Rock and Roll." Elvis recorded there as well as Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins.

  • This is the title track of Mi Mandela, an 11-song record inspired by Idris Elba's experience playing the South African anti-Apartheid leader Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.†ŽThe actor has also released music under the name Dris as well as directing and appearing in the video for Mumford & Sons' "Lover of the Light."
  • The album celebrates South African music and also pays homage to the actor's late father, Winston Elba, as well as Nelson Mandela. "South Africa has numerous different tribes and each one has a musical expression, and each one has a very unique, different sound style," said Elba. "At the time I had my studio at the apartment I was staying in while I was making Mandela - a little keyboard, a laptop - and as an experiment to myself, I vowed to keep making music."
  • The song is a half-sung account of Elba recording a video message for the real Mandela during the filming of his biopic - only for the South African leader to have no idea who he was when he watched the clip.

  • Bono wrote this after going on a relief mission in Ethiopia. It's an anti-apartheid song, but the lyrics make a broad political statement about how money seems to be more important than personal freedoms in the eyes of many world leaders.
  • Bono was part of Little Steven Van Zandt's 1985 Artists United Against Apartheid collaboration, which brought attention to the racist policy in South Africa and to the plight of Nelson Mandela. Over the years, Bono has been part of many causes as he uses his celebrity status to gain access to political leaders and raise money for relief organizations.
  • This was first released as an acoustic song on the compilation Artists United Against Apartheid, with Keith Richards and Ron Wood from the Rolling Stones sitting in with Bono. Little Steven put Artists Against Apartheid together with the intention of releasing just one song - "Sun City." Some of the artists offered other songs, so they were able to release a full album.
  • Bono got the lyric "I have seen the comings and goings, the captains and the kings," from Irish poet Brendan Behan. The line, "I am someone" came from a quote by US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson.
  • Before The Edge's guitar solo, Bono says: "OK Edge, play The Blues."
  • This appeared on the 7" single that also included "Where The Streets Have No Name" and "Sweetest Thing."

  • This song begins with Browne crooning, "I don't know what to say about these days," and continues with a couple of introspective verses. The third verse, however, is more direct, a stark statement about guns: "It's never been that hard to buy a gun. Now they'll sell a Glock 19 to just about anyone."

"I admit that the gun reference arrives quite suddenly," Browne told The Independent. "But it was a very brief opportunity to say something about it."

    Big screen real life
Be a part of the story
    Get free it's time
    Be a candidate
The things that you wanna say
    They disappear into fear
    And they're gone then
Mystery always hides in your eyes
Mysteries always found in your eyes

    Now the moments come
    And the story goes on
    When you're feeling young
    And you just want fun
Get in the picture come on
Now turn the future on us

    Get free it's time
    To be somebody's story
    Be free it's time
    Be a candidate
    Pictures don't only fade
    They reappear into view
    If you want them
    Visions, they always flashed
    In your eyes

    And the moments come
Just let the story go on
    And the future return
    Now you just want fun
    Get in the picture belong
    And you think so young

    Let the feeling come
Get in the story, come on
Now turn the future on us

  • Johnny Marr wrote this about the great women that have made the impression on him throughout his life. He explained to Under The Radar magazine: "Women seem to have a need and an understanding of what their sense of purpose is doing for them that guys don't. I'm being very presumptuous here, but what I've learned from a couple of women is the idea of: Does this relationship with a child, with a husband, with a lover, with a girlfriend, with what I'm doing, work for my sense of purpose? This is a concept that I don't know any guy has."
  • Marr's daughter and American singer-songwriter Meredith Sheldon both sing on the track (Sheldon opened for the former Smiths' guitarist on his 2014 tour). He said: "It was very important that I have two women in my life sing on that track. Girls have a song that hopefully guys will relate to too."

    Van Diemen's Land Lyrics

    Hold me now,
    Oh hold me now
    'Til this hour
    Has gone around
    And I'm gone
    On the rising tide
    For to face
    Van Diemen's land

    It's a bitter pill
    I swallow here
To be rent from one so dear
    We fought for justice
    And not for gain
    But the magistrate
    Sent me away

    Now kings will rule
    And the poor will toil
    And tear their hands
    As they tear the soil
    But a day will come
    In this dawning age
    When an honest man
    Sees an honest wage

    Hold me now,
    Oh hold me now
    'Til this hour
    Has gone around
    And I'm gone
    On the rising tide

It was one of those times
    When I wasn't really there
    I'm a side effect I said
    In town disintegration was
    Doing me in
    Do me in again

    Sometimes so good
    Makes me think of revolution
    Can we do it again
    Something in our blood
    Makes people needy people
    Consuming again

  • The lyrics for this song were inspired by the situationists of the late '60s. "They were provocateurs," Marr told Under The Radar magazine. "They influenced a few songs on both my solo records."

"I read an essay criticizing the right-on, hipster, left wing so it felt pretty good to not get too righteous looking at your own side," he continued. "It felt inspired to turn the tables and say, 'It's all very well having political correctness, but it doesn't really count for very much when you're harassing some people on the street with your mates when you're all f--ked up on a Friday night. You're on the same side as the enemy then. You're just as gross as the other side.'"

The Situationist International was an international organization of social revolutionaries, who were active from its formation in 1957 to its dissolution in 1972. The exclusive membership was made up of mainly French avant-garde artists, intellectuals, and political theorists. They were greatly influential in shaping the ideas behind the May 1968 French insurrections.

  • As he explains when introducing this song in concert, Bono wrote this when he made a trip to El Salvador in the middle of the civil war in the '80s. In San Salvador, he met with the Comadres, who were a group of women also known as the "mothers of the disappeared." These women had lost their children, who were taken in the night by death squads, leaving the mothers unsure if their children were alive or dead. He then stayed with a group of guerillas in the middle of the mountains in the north of the country, where he was inspired to write "Bullet The Blue Sky," another single from The Joshua Tree album. (thanks, Alexis - San Salvador, El Salvador)
  • This song ties in with U2's work with Amnesty International. In 1986, they participated in 6 concerts as part of the Amnesty International Conspiracy Of Hope tour. Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Brian Adams, and Sting were also on the tour with U2.
  • On February 5, 1989, U2 played in Buenos Aires with The Mothers of the Disappeared onstage with pictures of their missing children. After this song, the women draped scarves around Bono's neck and the crowd sang the Argentine National Anthem.
  • At some concerts, U2 would lead into this with a song called "El Pueblo Vencera," which is Spanish for "A People United." Bono would often implore the crowd to sing with him.

Why would I spend the rest of my days unhappy
Why would I spend the rest of this year alone
    When I can go therapy
When I can go Therapy two times a day
Why would I spend the rest of this week so bitter
And all that listening is making you bitter too
    When I can go therapy
When I can go therapy two times a day

I don't wanna be around me
And I don't blame you with you blocking all my calls
There no was since I been sleeping silent
Most nights I lie awake between you and Fall
    Work stressing me out
    And after all this time
    Still not boring no

Why would I spend the rest of my days unhappy
Why would I spend the rest of this year alone
    When I can go therapy
When I can go therapy two times a day

I care more about what you think
Than I care about the music
When I get cross with you
I'm surprised you care at all
I figure if I had a life time, more time love
Well, shame on me if I don't get used that well
    I'm stressing you out
And at the way is going you need it more than me

Why would I spend the rest of my days unhappy
Why would I spend the rest of this year alone
    When I can go therapy
When I can go therapy two times a day

    Someone help me
    Turn around
    I'm a victim
Hate the sound of my own voice
    Turn it down
And all I do is aggravation

Why would I spend the rest of my days so bitter

  • The opening track from The London Sessions, this doo-wop tune was written by Sam Smith with Blige in mind. It is one of four songs on the album that the British blue-eyed soul singer-songwriter contributed towards.
  • When Smith first sang the song to Blige in his London studio, she found herself profoundly moved. "I just had to change a couple little words to make it fit me," she recalled to Billboard magazine. "It touched my heart because it's a topic that people don't like to talk about. I thought it would be nice to let people know, 'It's OK, you're not the only one.'"
  • The song was co-written by Eg White, best known for his work on Adele's "Chasing Pavements."
  • For Blige therapy isn't about sitting in front of a doctor. She explained to Time Out: "It's about working out, running, maybe a bowl of ice cream."

"Listening to Mary J Blige might be therapy for a whole lot of people," she added. "Having a good cry to a song you love and relate to – just getting stuff out, so you can see everything clearly. That's what I mean by therapy."

    One Tree Hill Lyrics

We turn away to face the cold, enduring chill
As the day begs the night for mercy love
The sun so bright it leaves no shadows
    Only scars carved into stone
    On the face of earth
The moon is up and over One Tree Hill
We see the sun go down in your eyes

You run like river, on like a sea
You run like a river runs to the sea

And in the world a heart of darkness
    A fire zone
    Where poets speak their heart
    Then bleed for it
Jara sang, his song a weapon
    In the hands of love
You know his blood still cries
    From the ground

It runs like a river runs to the sea
It runs like a river to the sea

I don't believe in painted roses
    Or bleeding hearts
While bullets rape the night of the merciful
    I'll see you again
When the stars fall from the sky
And the moon has turned red
    Over One Tree Hill

    We run like a river
    Run to the sea
We run like a river to the sea
    And when it's raining
    Raining hard
    That's when the rain will
    Break my heart

    Raining, raining in the heart
    Raining in your heart
    Raining, raining to your heart
    Raining, raining, raining
    Raining to your heart
    Raining, raining in your heart
    Raining in your heart
    To the sea

    Oh great ocean

  • U2 wrote this about Greg Carroll, a Māori from New Zealand who became an assistant and close friend of Bono after he met the band in 1985 while they were in his country. He was killed a year later when he was hit by a car while running an errand for Bono on Bono's motorcycle. The album The Joshua Tree, as well as this song, are dedicated to Greg Carroll.
  • One Tree Hill is the tallest of 5 volcanic islands in Auckland where Greg Carroll took Bono his first night in New Zealand. It is a tourist attraction in Auckland, with a monument at the summit dedicated to John Logan Campbell, one of Auckland's founding fathers.
  • The lyrics describe the traditional Māori burial that Greg Carroll was given at One Tree Hill.
  • In 1994, the One Tree Hill tree was the victim of a chainsaw attack by a Māori activist which almost ringbarked it. A further attack in 1999 all but finished the job and the life expectancy of the tree was estimated to be only three years. By October 2000, the pine had become unstable and was a danger to the public. After careful study of the condition of the tree, the decision was made to take it down. The felling operation was successfully carried out on October 26 amid much public attention, and the Auckland skyline was changed forever. (thanks, Copper - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • "Jara" refers to Victor Jara, a folk singer from Chile who was killed after a military uprising for his political beliefs.
  • Bono felt he could perform this only once, and did just one take in the studio.
  • There is a place in England called One Tree Hill, but it has nothing to do with this song.
  • The American TV show One Tree Hill, which went on the air in 2003, was named after this song. The show takes place in a fictional North Carolina town called Tree Hill. The show's creator, Mark Schwahn, decided to use the name after hearing the song. The title implies that there is only one Tree Hill- one place the characters can really call home.

    Living in the darkness
I wear it like a crown
    Oh I've got tough skin
    Ready for my bow
All I've got is two hands
I tied them in the middle
    Ready for the red tape
    To open up my ribcage

    I offer souvenirs
A deaf tongue and blinded ears
Can you fill the shelves in here
    Come in come in

    Everybody look around
    Everybody look around
I don't know how to fill the space
    The invitation's on the page
    Open up my ribcage

Want you to want me like I'm all you got
Mama see's seeing it but can't make me stop
Telling the truth it might mean you get broken
But letting it hurt that's my method of coping
Doubt in season like that smoke in my lungs
What they project on me what I've become
Down on my knees unsure what to say
No I never learned how to prey
Don't know, know who I been fooling
But you got me running in circles I'm ruined
Let you inside opened up all my wounds
Taking my Ribcage and ripped it in two

    Everybody look around
    Everybody look around
I don't know how to fill the space
    The invitation's on the page
    Open up my ribcage

    Tie off all my tendons
    Watch how they stretch
    Oh I've got the muscle
    But lord, I'm spent
    Knocking down my sternum
    Began at a young age
    Too much space between
    Open up my ribcage

    I offer souvenirs
A deaf tongue and blinded ears
Can you fill the shelves in here
    Come in come in

There's impenetrable silence inside of my head
There's nothing I can buy when I'm practically dead
I get so tired of writing everything I should have said
That maybe this time I'll put my pen down and just tell you instead
You see I opened up my ribcage and violins flew out
The organs softly played through my violin mouth
I got lights hotter than love hidden beneath my tongue
    Written on my skin
It tells me your the one

    Everybody look around
    Everybody look around
I don't know how to fill the space
    The invitation's on the page
    Open up my ribcage

    Open up my ribcage
    Open up my ribcage
    Open up my ribcage
    Open up my ribcage

  • Lambert explained the inspration for the song to Billboard magazine: "It's about the downside of vulnerability, the detriment to people feeling entitled of your story," she said. "I got asked during the week of the Grammys about how I got through my rape in the same breath as what Madonna wore, and it was on live television. I was like, 'This is so unkind.' I was also introspectively saying, 'OK, I've talked openly about this, this is in my bio. Did I bring this on myself? Did I do this?' Because this is the nature of the business, I'm not gonna f---ing take this lying down."

"Maybe part of my job in this setting is to be somewhat of an educator, Lambert continued. "I'm like, 'OK, I can do that.' I was going to be a teacher. I was applying to graduate school when I got the call to do 'Same Love,' actually. I was gonna go to Boston University for my masters in teaching. I live in Massachusetts now, so it feels halfway there."
  • The song features verses from Angel Haze and K. Flay and is the only track on Heart On My Sleeve to feature guest rappers.
