Garth Brooks is the father of three daughters, all of whom have now left home, so there's a particularly personal aspect to this Marc Beeson and Allen Shamblin penned song. "There's a great lyric in 'Send 'Em on Down the Road,'" he commented. "At the very end, where it says, 'you pick 'em up, you dust 'em off, you hold 'em close, and you pray them a lot.' Anybody who's ever had children, that's what you do 24/7 … You know it was written by somebody who had just gone through this."

"It doesn't matter if it's kids going from kindergarten to first grade, high school to college, gettin' married - 'Send 'Em on Down the Road is every parent's anthem," Brooks added. "What a beautiful song."

Real World Song Chart

Soul singer Sam Moore sang on this with Springsteen. Moore was half of the duo Sam & Dave, who had a hit with "Soul Man." Moore was never paid much for his music, and in his later years had to tour just to pay his medical bills. In 2002 he got some redemption when he and some other musicians got a settlement from their union because their record companies failed to report royalties and make proper payments to their pension fund.

E-Street Band pianist Roy Bittan wrote the music, with Springsteen filling in the lyrics.

Springsteen had fired the E-Street Band, but did use Bittan, keyboard player David Sancious, and backup singer/wife Patti Scialfa on some of the songs on Human Touch and Lucky Town.

Machine Head frontman Rob Flynn told Kerrang! that he wrote three entirely different versions of this song. "I wrote one about the Newtown (school) shooting. That really affected me, that whole story. But they were scrapped. Then I wrote another about something else – and that didn't make it on the record. So the song is about the (Charles) Manson murders. I had read a lot of books on this whole thing when I was my 20s, and I'd watched all the movies, so I knew the subject well. It's obviously horrific and tragic: but it's also fascinating. He wasn't even a man who did these murders– he got other people to do them."

"I remember speaking to (drummer) Dave (Maclean), and he'd just seen a new documentary about it," he continued. "So I just started writing the lyrics."

"Of the three (lyric versions) I'd written, I didn't necessarily think this was the right one for the song," Flynn added. "But when I heard them back with the music, I knew it was working."

The Night of the Long Knives is a descriptive phrase that was applied to the night of June 30, 1934 when Hitler, assisted by Himmler's SS, carried out a series of political murders. Many of those killed were leaders of the SA, the paramilitary Brownshirts.

The term has its antecedents. The apocryphal treacherous killing of native British chieftains by Anglo-Saxon mercenaries on Salisbury Plain in AD 472 was named "The Treachery of the Long Knives" by Geoffrey of Monmouth and became a prominent symbol of Saxon betrayal.

The term Night of the Long Knives is now applied to any treacherous massacre or betrayal.

This was the title track to one of two Springsteen albums released simultaneously five years after his last album. Released with Lucky Town, they both sold poorly.

One of the first songs Springsteen recorded using musicians who were not in the E-Street Band, he says it is about "Searchin' for the bottom line."

This was the only song from Human Touch included on Springsteen's 1995 Greatest Hits album.

The cinematographer on the video was Daniel Pearl, who a decade earlier worked on the first attempt at Springsteen's "Dancing In The Dark" video. That one didn't go well, with Springsteen walking out after a dispute with Pearl over the lighting. In the ensuing years, Springsteen came to realize that Pearl was correct in how he wanted to light him, so he signed him up to work on "Human Touch."

Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes is an album produced by T Bone Burnett consisting of 20 tracks based on handwritten Bob Dylan lyrics. They were penned by the legendary songwriter in 1967 during the period in which he created his noted album The Basement Tapes. Burnett assembled some of his favorite songwriters in the basement of the Capitol studio in LA to put music to the words.

This song features Elvis Costello on lead vocals. Jim James (of My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford (of Mumford & Sons), Rhiannon Giddens (of the Carolina Chocolate Drops) and Taylor Goldsmith (of Dawes) also contributed to the album. "None of us felt we were dealing with something sacrosanct," Costello commented to The Daily Telegraph. "There's a sense of playfulness in the folio. They range from the completely barmy to wonderful, beautiful, well-constructed lyrics that are right there waiting to be sung. We were walking in, all this time later, to find ideas in a box and turn them into songs."
