Lay Down Sally Lyrics

There is nothing that is wrong
In wanting you to stay here with me
I know you've got somewhere to go
But won't you make yourself at home and stay with me?
And don't you ever leave

Lay down, Sally, and rest you in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you

The sun ain't nearly on the rise
And we still got the moon and stars above
Underneath the velvet skies
Love is all that matters
Won't you stay with me?
And don't you ever leave

Lay down, Sally, and rest you in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you

I long to see the morning light
Coloring your face so dreamily
So don't you go and say goodbye
You can lay your worries down and stay with me
And don't you ever leave

Lay down, Sally, and rest you in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you

Lay down, Sally, and rest you in my arms
Don't you think you want someone to talk to?
Lay down, Sally, no need to leave so soon
I've been trying all night long just to talk to you

Lay Down Sally Song Chart
  • This jaunty tune is one of Clapton's biggest American hits. He wrote it in the style of one of his favorite songwriters, the Oklahoma musician J.J. Cale (Clapton said the song was "as close as an Englishman could get to being J.J. Cale). The B-side of the single was Clapton's cover of Cale's song "Cocaine."
  • In this song, Clapton tries to convince a girl to hang out with him in bed instead of leaving. The song is not typical of Clapton's work, which is often based on the blues.
  • Marcy Levy, one of Clapton's backup singers, wrote this with him and sang on it. She toured with Bob Seger before joining Clapton's band in 1973. In 1988, Levy, using the name Marcella Detroit, joined former Bananarama singer Siobhan Fahey to form Shakespear's Sister.

Also getting a songwriting credit on this track is George Terry, who also played guitar on the track. Terry was a member of Clapton's band.
  • "Lay Down Sally" is grammatically incorrect, as it would mean taking Sally and actually placing her horizontally. When asking Sally to join him in bed, Clapton's correct grammar would be "Lie Down Sally." He's in good company: Bob Dylan also ignored this rule of grammar in "Lay Lady Lay." (thanks, Bert - Pueblo, NM)
  • Eric Clapton once had his hand slammed in a car door by a member of the band The Blues Project. As told in Al Kooper's Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards , during the landmark 1967 concert "Murray the K's Easter Rock Extravaganza," Clapton, Steve Katz, and Kooper headed out to a local music store between sets and were a little late getting back. Hurrying out of the cab, "Steve was right behind me and as he left the cab he accidentally slammed the door right on Clapton's hand! Eric began to scream in pain, and Steve turned around, ran back, and opened the door. Miraculously, Eric hadn't broken any bones or even punctured his skin for that matter. Steve felt like a jerk, however. Can you imagine that kind of guilt?"
  • This is the first track on the album. Depending on who you ask, "Slowhand" was either a nickname given to Clapton by the group's manager when he was with The Yardbirds (because of his laid-back guitar style), or derived from what would happen when Clapton would break a string on stage: the audience would do a "slow hand clap" while he fixed it.

    If you want my love
He gotta do what he does
If you want these sweet like sugar Gucci lips
    He gotta give it up
I know you think I'm cool
But I ain't one of the boys
No, don't be scared that I'm gon' tie you down
    I need a little more

Baby, don't call me your friend
If I hear that word again
You might never get a chance to see me naked in your bed
And I know girls ain't hard to find
But if you think you wanna try
Then consider this an invitation to kiss my ass goodbye

    Give me that Title, title
Come on give me that title, title
Better give me that title, title
Come on give me that title, title

    If it ain't no game
    I won't be hanging around
But don't blow up my shit at 3 AM saying
    "How you need me now?"
    Don't call me boo
Like you're some kind of ghost (which you're a ghost)
If you don't want me seeking other guys
Well, here's what you need to know

Baby, don't call me your friend

Yeah, said I'm a special kind of woman
I'm loving what you got, but I'm hating what you doing
Gotta understand that I'm looking for a man
Who can get up on a bike, look ma, no hands
You gotta show me off, off
But you embarrassed, if that's the case I'm all gone
You gotta treat me like a trophy, put me on the shelf
    I promise something else

Baby, don't call me your friend

  • The upbeat title track of Meghan Trainor's debut EP is an ode to commitment in a relationship.

Baby, don't call me your friend
If I hear that word again
You might never get a chance to see me naked in your bed

The sassy singer is warning a guy if you want to get with her, you'd better give her that girlfriend title.
  • This was released as the second single from Title. "Dear Future Husband" was originally earmarked to be the second release as it has a closer doo-wop sound to "All About That Bass," but instead this was chosen as the follow-up to Meghan's #1 smash. "I loved that 'Title' showed a little Caribbean drum before the chorus," she explained to MTV News, "and then, like, a rap bridge that was, like…[a] totally different sound."
  • Title topped the US album chart, making Trainor the thirteenth female artist to achieve both a debut #1 single and long player. The previous female artist to do so was Kesha with "TiK ToK" and Animal in 2010.
  • Trainor wrote this with her "All About That Bass" songwriting partner Kevin Kadish, who also produced the track. He explained to Songwriter Universe: "We had a free day and we wrote the song right away, in about eight minutes! We were inspired. The lyric theme is about something real that Meghan was dealing with. I had this track and she said she wanted to write to it."

    I Shot the Sheriff Lyrics

(I Shot the Sheriff, but I didn't shoot no deputy, oh no! Oh!
I shot the sheriff, but I didn't shoot no deputy, ooh, ooh, ooh)

Yeah! All around in my home town,
They're tryin' to track me down,
They say they want to bring me in guilty
For the killing of a deputy,
For the life of a deputy, but I say

    Oh, now, now, oh!
(I shot the sheriff) the sheriff
(But I swear it was in self defense) Oh, no! (Oh, oh, ooh)
Yeah, I say, I shot the sheriff oh, Lord! (And they say it is a capital offense)
    Yeah! (oh, oh, ooh) Yeah!

Sheriff John Brown always hated me,
    For what, I don't know,
Every time I plant a seed,
He said kill it before it grow,
He said kill them before they grow, and so

Read it in the news! (I shot the sheriff) Oh, Lord!
(But I swear it was in self-defense)
Where was the deputy? (Oh, oh, ooh)
I say, I shot the sheriff,
But I swear it was in self defense, yeah! (Ooh)

Freedom came my way one day
And I started out of town, yeah!
All of a sudden I saw sheriff John Brown
    Aiming to shoot me down,
So I shot, I shot, I shot him down and I say,
If I am guilty I will pay!

(I shot the sheriff) But I say (But I didn't shoot no deputy),
I didn't shoot no deputy (oh, no-oh) oh no!
(I shot the sheriff) I did!
But I didn't shoot no deputy, oh (Oh, oh, ooh)

Reflexes had got the better of me
And what is to be must be,
Every day the bucket a-go a well,
One day the bottom a-go drop out,
One day the bottom a-go drop out, I say

    I, I, I, I, shot the sheriff.
Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no
    I, I (shot the sheriff)
But I didn't shoot no deputy, yeah
    So, yeah

  • This song tells the story of a man who shoots a sheriff who is harassing him, but is wrongly accused of killing the deputy. Marley said that some of the song is true, but would not say what parts.
  • This was the last single Marley released with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, who left to go solo.
  • Eric Clapton recorded this in 1974. His version was a #1 hit in the US, the only #1 of his career. Clapton's recording gave Marley a big boost, as it exposed him to a rock audience.
  • On the 2001 documentary The Life Of Bob Marley, Esther Anderson, who was Marley's girlfriend, claims she helped write this and that it is about birth control.
  • The sheriff's name in the song is John Brown. In 1963, Bob Dylan wrote a song called "John Brown" about a boy who goes to war and comes back badly wounded.
  • Bruce Springsteen used the name "John Brown" as the name of a judge in his 1981 song "Johnny 99."
  • Marley later wrote a song called "Mr. Brown," which was probably about the same character. (thanks, Brad Nash - Rochester Hills, MI)

"My mom and Dad used to be in a band together, and they would end one of their sets with their arrangement of a medley of patriotic songs, which ended with an incredibly powerful rendition of 'God Bless America.'" he explained to MTV News. "The ending gave me goosebumps so intense that I can't describe the feeling and will never forget that."

"I called my mom late at night while in the studio and arranged the end of 'Miss Mysterious' with her to mimic the end of their medley," Carson continued, "and I am so happy with how that came out."

  • Clapton is rooted in Blues, which is evident on this song where he tells his lover he can't stand her cheating and isn't going to put up with it anymore.
  • Clapton added some new members to his band before recording this, including Albert Lee on guitar and Gary Brooker, formerly of Procol Harum, on keyboards. The band lasted only one album, but Clapton remained good friends with Brooker.
  • A month after this was released, Clapton developed severe ulcers and almost died. Years of alcohol and pain killers were responsible.
  • Clapton got the album title from a friend who was always asking for another ticket to his shows.

    Let's Go!

Hey you, so you hit another brick wall
Your beat down but your not behind the 8-ball
Hey you, when you break it's not a reason to bleed
    Let's go, let's go
It's not the end of the world
    Just because you're in pieces
It's not the end of the world
    Were all so young
    Into love and violence
    Live and let die
    And let's go
    All good people
    Sin in silence
    Forgive us our evils
    Let's go
    Let's go to the edge
    Let's go to the end
    Let's go, let's go, let's go
    Let's go through the darkness
    Nothing can stop us
    Come on everybody let's go

Hey you, well your looking like a car crash
How long will the madness in your head last?
Hey, you when you break it's not a reason to bleed
    Let's go, let's go
It's not the end of the world

  • Sixx: A.M.'s songs start in different ways. Sometimes vocalist James Michael will come up with a melody, or guitarist DJ Ashba and bassist Nikki Sixx will come up with a riff or chord pattern. DJ Ashba explained to Artist Direct : "Every song we've ever done just starts off with us literally picking up a couple of acoustics, strumming out some chords, and James will sing a beautiful melody. When we write songs from a musical standpoint, we get basic chord rhythms going, and we get the melody. The melody is the number one most important thing to all of us because we're all songwriters."

"Once we know we're locked into such a sick melody, then, almost the last thing I worry about when writing a song is the guitar parts," Ashba added. "No matter how awesome the guitars are, if you strip any song down, it usually boils down to three or four basic chords underneath the whole. And just a solid melody. We focus on the understructure of what makes a great song."

"The last thing I usually do when it comes to writing, once a song's in place, is add in all the cool riffs around the vocals," he continued. "It's super important for me to add to the song and not step on it. If the guitars call for it, you add a really ripping solo. All of those things are determined once the song is in place. Sometimes, a riff will inspire a song as in the case of 'Let's Go.' It's always different."
  • The lyric reflects Nikki Sixx' ongoing recovery from heroin addiction. He explained to Billboard magazine: "Lyrically it really ties back to the first two records. It's a song that kind of says, 'Hey, let's get up and get out of our own way. Let's go. Let's go through the darkness. We can make this. We can do this.'"

  • Sheryl Crow wrote this song about Nicks based on stories Stevie told her after they became friends. Crow produced this track as well, along with four other songs on the album.
  • The Trouble In Shangri-La album actually represents an accumulation of a decade-and-a-half's worth of work as well as three songs from the 1970s.
Is it just our imagination, or does every other song by Stevie Nicks look back to her Fleetwood Mac days? In the course of compiling this album, Nicks got sidetracked... to say the least. One instance was writing a song for the 1996 action film Twister, which led to her crossing paths with Lindsey Buckingham and eventually the reunion of the band in 1997.
  • Sheryl Crow and Stevie Nicks go back a ways, and the two performers frequently collaborate. In return for Crow's work on this song, Nicks performed on Crow's 2002 album C'Mon C'Mon.
  • While we're on the subject of Stevie Nicks, pay no attention to the wild-hair rumor that Lindsay Lohan was planning to buy the rights to her life story and film it with herself (Lohan) in the lead role. While Lohan might have burbled this idea at some point, Nicks has said that this would happen - quote - "over my dead body" - end quote, along with something about somebody needing to "stop doing drugs and get a grip." Rowr!

    I remember the first time
It was one of the worst times
You lied right to my face

Oh the way that you stood there
You gave me a dead stare
    The kind you cant erase

When the angels break their wings
    They crash and stumble
    Just like we struggle
If we could have this one night over
    We Gotta Get It Right
We gotta get it right this time

Cause we were young and indestructible
(Gotta get it right this time)
With any luck we'll be unstoppable
(Gotta get it right this time)
    And we could last forever

    I remember the last time
More than all of the past times
    And how you crawled away

    You fought with a passion
    Such over reaction
But you never fought to stay

When the angels break their wings
    They crash and stumble
    Just like we struggle

If we could have this one night over
    We gotta get it right
We gotta get it right this time

Cause we were young and indestructible
(Gotta get it right this time)
With any luck we'll be unstoppable
(Gotta get it right this time)

And there's a chance for use tonight
And there's a chance to make it right

Cause we were young and indestructible

"It's all of our favorite bands that influenced us like Queen and those types of bands from the seventies. We're taking elements of the ragtime and disco stuff, sonically, and putting more of a modern production and modern twist on them."

"When we finished the album, the name came up because we were trying to describe what we had created with this album because we knew it was very special," Ashba continued. "Once the name came up, we knew there was no better name to describe this record."
  • Drummer Jeff Fabb (Black Label Society, In This Moment) joined vocalist James Michael, guitarist DJ Ashba and bassist Nikki Sixx on Modern Vintage. Ashba said the long player marked the first time Sixx: A.M. had used a live drummer on one of its discs, having previously relied solely on programmed drums while in the recording studio. "It was the first album where we actually felt it was important to capture that big album vibe we were going after," he explained. "To bring in a live drummer, it really made a huge difference, you know; it gave the whole entire album and songs a new breath of fresh air, which was really cool."

    Janie's Got A Gun Lyrics

Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound of my gun
Dum, dum, dum, honey what have you done
Dum, dum, dum, it's the sound, it's the sound...
    Nah, nah, nah...nah, nah, nah...
    Nah, nah, nah...nah, nah, nah...

    Janie's Got A Gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her whole world's come undone
From lookin' straight at the sun

    What did her daddy do
What did he put you through
They say when Janie was arrested
They found him underneath a train
But man, he had it comin'
Now that Janie's got a gun
She ain't never gonna be the same

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run

    Tell me now it's untrue
    What did her daddy do
He jacked the little bitty baby
The man has got to be insane
They say the spell that he was under
    The lightnin' and the thunder
Knew that someone had to stop the pain

Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun
Now everybody is on the run

    What did her daddy do
    It's Janie's last I.O.U.
She had to take him down easy
And put a bullet in his brain
She said 'cause nobody believes me
The man was such a sleaze
He ain't never gonna be the same

Run away, run away from the pain
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Run away, run away, run, run away

    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Janie's got a gun
    Everybody is on the run
    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun

Now everybody is on the run (Honey, honey what's your problem)
'Cause Janie's got a gun (Tell me it ain't right)
Janie's got a gun (Was it daddy's cradle robbin')
Her dog day's just begun (That made you scream at night)
    Now everybody's on the run
    Janie's got a gun

    Janie's got a gun
    Her dog day's just begun

Janie's Got A Gun Song Chart
  • This song is about a girl who shoots her father because he is sexually abusing her. Steven Tyler, who wrote the lyric, explained in the Walk This Way autobiography: "That song is about a girl getting raped and pillaged by her father. It's about incest, something that happens to a lot of kids who don't even find out about it until they find themselves trying to work through some major f--king neuroses.
  • Steven Tyler started writing the song in his basement, which was when he came up with the line "Janie's got a gun." He then sat on it for months, "waiting for the oracle door to open." Tyler told Rolling Stone it only became a song about child abuse after, "I looked over at a Time magazine and saw this article on 48 hours, minute by minute, of handgun deaths in the United States." He continued: "Then I got off on the child-abuse angle. I'd heard this woman speaking about how many children are attacked by their mothers and fathers. It was f---ing scary. I felt, man, I gotta sing about this. And that was it. That was my toe in the door."
  • The line, "He jacked a little, bitty baby" was written as "He raped a little, bitty baby," but Steven Tyler changed it at the request of John Kalodner, an executive at Aerosmith's record company who looked out for their commercial interests - he thought radio stations wouldn't play the song if it was too graphic. According to Tyler, Kalodner also asked him to change the line "put a bullet in his brain" to "stand out in the pouring rain," but he refused.
  • Steven Tyler admitted to Rolling Stone that he was attracted to his daughter, Liv. Said Tyler, "How can a father not be attracted to his daughter, especially when she's a cross between the girl he married and himself?" He continued: "All a man has to do is be totally honest with himself and he can see it. However, the real man knows that's just a place to never go. Instead he celebrates it by telling his daughter how beautiful she is and what a precious child of God she is. There's ways to love it without making love to it - I wrote 'Janie's Got A Gun' about fathers who don't know the difference."
  • The video depicted a girl killing her father, and the subsequent crime scene. One of the most cinematic videos ever to hit MTV, it was directed by David Fincher, who would later direct the movies Se7en, Alien III and Panic Room. Fincher's talent for building tension in a scene is evident in the clip, and many of the lighting and composition techniques would later show up in his feature films. The video starred Kristin Dattilo as Janie, and Lesley Ann Warren as her mother.
  • Steven Tyler wrote this song with Aerosmith bass player Tom Hamilton. Tyler typically writes with guitarist Joe Perry , but Hamilton has made significant songwriting contributions. Some of his other Aerosmith co-writes include "Sweet Emotion" and "Kings And Queens."
  • Aerosmith's first two decades produced millions in album sales but zero Grammy Awards. The first time they were honored was in 1991, when this song won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The voters in this category quickly acclimated to Aerosmith and gave them the award three more times in the '90s, for "Livin' On The Edge," "Crazy" and "Pink."
  • The song peaked on the US charts in February 1990, one week before the band performed it on Saturday Night Live. On the show, Aerosmith appeared in a famous Wayne's World skit where Steven Tyler and Tom Hamilton engage in a scholarly debate (Tyler: "it seems that Socialism is in repose..." Hamilton: "There's never been a blueprint for the dictatorship of the Proletariats..."), and Tom Hanks plays their roadie. The band would later appear in the movie Wayne's World 2.
  • The title of this song is similar to the 1939 anti-war novel Johnny Got His Gun, which the Metallica song "One" is about. (thanks, Daniel - Køge, Denmark)

    Borrowed Time Lyrics

When it come to you and me
And it's never how it supposed to be
And every time you come around
It get little harder to breath
    If we only have tonight
    I wouldn't change a thing
    Well I wouldn't change a thing
    And I aint going anywhere
It's to late for me to leave
It's to late for me to leave

    Couse I'm falling slow motion
    We only have this moment
Even if God gave us forever
It still wouldn't be another pure love
So as long as youryour servant
    You know right back
A little more this Borrowed Time

Let's not waste what we have left
    Just talking about goodbye, no
    We can shit here pretanding
We have more than a life time
    Than a life time

How came a song ended so soon
    When it feels so right
    Yeah it feel so right

    I'm falling slow motion
    We only have this moment
Even if God gave us forever
It still wouldn't be another pure love
So as long as youryour servant
    You know right back
A little more this borrowed time
    Borrow time
This life is us to live
This time is all we get so

    I'm only falling slow motion
    We only have this moment
Even if God gave us forever
It still wouldn't be another pure love
So as long as youryour servant
    You know right back
A little more this borrowed time

  • This was one of the last songs added to the album. Clapton's record company wanted songs that were more upbeat, so this was included.
  • Songwriter Jerry Williams wrote this and two other songs on the album.

  • Clapton married his wife Pattie in 1979. She was previously married to George Harrison, which didn't stop Clapton from expressing his love for her on the album Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs in 1970. Eric and Pattie divorced in 1988.
  • The album title comes from the song "Louisiana Blues" by Muddy Waters, which contains the line, "I'm going to New Orleans, baby, behind the sun."
