Can't Get You Out Of My Head Song Chart

This was Minogue's first hit in the US since 1988, when her cover of "The Locomotion" hit #3. She has been very successful in England and her home country of Australia, but didn't attract nearly as much attention in America.

This is known as "The La La Song," because the chorus is Kylie singing "La La La, La La La La La" over and over.

Minogue is an actress and sex-symbol. She dated INXS singer Michael Hutchence, has appeared in Australian Soap Operas, and she played the Green Fairy in the movie Moulin Rouge shortly before this was released.

In England, this sold over a million copies and was in the Top 40 for 5 months.

This was written by Cathy Dennis and former Mud guitarist Rob Davis. Dennis had a few hits as a solo artist in the early '90s, including "Just Another Dream" and "Too Many Walls."

Cathy Dennis and Rob Davis originally wrote this for S Club 7, after their manager Simon Fuller asked the duo to come up with a song for the British pop group. After Fuller heard the demo, he felt it wasn't right for S Club 7 and rejected it. It was then offered to Sophie Ellis-Bextor, but she turned it down. Davis then met with Minogue's A&R executive Jamie Nelson who, after hearing the demo cassette of the song, booked it for Minogue to record.

At the 2002 Brit Awards, Kylie performed a version of this to the beat of "Blue Monday" by New Order. This remix was released as the B-side of her 2002 hit "Love At First Sight."

This song's first week on the UK charts was Kylie's personal 262nd week on charts, making her the most successful chart act not from the US or UK. This is her biggest seller in the UK, selling 1,037,235 copies. It was the biggest single and the most played song of 2001 there (it was aired 45,577 times on UK radio).

The song was accompanied by a state-of-the-art video. The video director Dawn Shadforth had Kylie dressed in clothes and driving a car in a future from the '60s perspective utopia style.

This was the most-played tune of the 2000s in the UK, according to PRS for Music, which collects royalties on behalf of songwriters and composers. The track received the most airplay and live covers in the first decade of the 21st century whilst Britney Spears' single "Toxic" was the second most played song. The same songwriter, Cathy Dennis, penned both tunes.

Charlotte Grey and Spooks actor Rupert Penry-Jones was dating Kylie when she recorded this song. He gave the Daily Mail a clue why their relationship didn't last. "I wasn't really into her music," he recalled. "And, once, I stupidly said to her when she played me 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head,' 'Yeah, it's good. But I'd rather hear you do some sort of rock, acoustic thing.' I was in the studio when she was recording it. And she got very annoyed with me. And then - obviously - it turned into this huge hit."

Rebel Rebel Song Chart

This song is about a boy who rebels against his parents by wearing makeup and tacky women's clothes. It was a defining song of the "Glam Rock" era. Characterized by feminine clothes and outrageous stage shows, Glam was big in England in the early '70s. Bowie had the most mainstream success of the glam rockers.

Three years before this was released, Bowie admitted he was bisexual. The announcement seemed to help his career, as he gained more fans and wrote more adventurous songs.

Bowie did an episode of VH1 Storytellers in 1999 where he introduced this song with this yarn:

I can tell you about the time that I first met Marc Bolan who became a very, very good friend of mine. We actually met very early on in the '60s before either of us were even a tad pole known. We were nothing; we were just two nothing kids with huge ambitions, and we both had the same manager at the time. And we met each other firstly painting the wall of our then manager's office.

"Hello, who are you?"

"I'm Marc, man."

"Hello, what do you do?"

"I'm a singer."

"Oh, yeah, so am I. Are you a Mod?"

"Yeah, I'm King Mod. Your shoes are crap."

"Well, you're short."

So we became really close friends. Marc took me dustbin shopping. At that time Carnaby Street, the fashion district, was going through a period of incredible wealth and rather than replace buttons on their shirts or zippers on their trousers, at the end of the day they'd just throw it all away in the dustbin. So, we used to go up and down Carnaby Street, this is prior to Kings Road, and go through all the dustbins around nine/ten o'clock at night and get our wardrobes together. That's how life was, you see.

I could also tell you that when we used to play the working men's clubs up north - very rough district - and I first went out as Ziggy Stardust, I was in the dressing room in one club and I said to the manager: "Could you show me where the lavatory is, please?"

And he said: "Aye, look up that corridor and you see the sink attached to the wall at the end? There you go."

So, I tottered briefly on my stack-heeled boots and said: "My dear man, I'm not pissing in a sink."

"He said: "Look son, if it's good enough for Shirley Bassey, it's good enough for you."

Them were the days, I guess.

In 1972, Bowie produced "Walk On The Wild Side" for Lou Reed, which is another song celebrating transgender individuals .

Bowie's guitarist, Mick Ronson, quit in 1973 in order to pursue a solo career, so Bowie played guitar on this song. Bowie spoke to Performing Songwriter magazine about the legendary riff: "When I was high school, that was the riff by which all of us young guitarists would prove ourselves in the local music store. It's a real air guitar thing, isn't it? I can tell you a very funny story about that. One night, I was in London in a hotel trying to get some sleep. It was quite late, like eleven or twelve at night, and I had some big deal thing on the next day, a TV show or something, and I heard this riff being played really badly from upstairs. I thought, 'Who the hell is doing this at this time of night?' On an electric guitar, over and over [sings riff to 'Rebel Rebel' in a very hesitant, stop and start way]. So I went upstairs to show the person how to play the thing (laughs). So I bang on the door. The door opens, and I say, 'Listen, if you're going to play...' and it was John McEnroe! I kid you not (laughs). It was McEnroe, who saw himself as some sort of rock guitar player at the time. That could only happen in a movie, couldn't it? McEnroe trying to struggle his way through the 'Rebel Rebel' riff."

An alternate version appears on Bowie's compilation album Sound And Vision. On this version, Bowie plays all the instruments, bar the congas, which are played by Geoff MacCormack.

The Diamond Dogs tour was an enormous production. It featured moving bridges, catapults, and a huge diamond that Bowie emerged from.

The album cover was painted by Dutch artist Guy Peellaert. It shows Bowie as a dog in front of a banner that says "The Strangest Living Curiosities." The cover caused some controversy because the Bowie dog had clearly not been neutered. An alternate cover was released with the appendages airbrushed out. Mick Jagger had shown Bowie artwork that Peellaert had done for the not yet released Rolling Stones album It's Only Rock And Roll. Bowie quickly got a hold of Peelaert and had him design the cover for Diamond Dogs, which was unleashed to the public prior to the album by the The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger was none too happy about this. David Bowie has this to say about the incident: "Mick was silly. I mean, he should never have shown me anything new. I went over to his house and he had all these Guy Peellaert pictures around and said, 'What do you think of this guy?' I told him I thought he was incredible. So I immediately phoned him up. The lyric, "We like dancing and we look divine," is a reference to the famous drag queen known as Divine, who starred in many John Waters films, including Pink Flamingos and Hairspray.

The transgender musician Jayne County claims Bowie based this on her song, "Queen Age Baby," which was recorded a month before "Rebel Rebel." County told Seconds magazine: "After one of his shows, me and Bowie were chatting. I had just signed to MainMan at the time and had all these great ideas kicking around, and I told David I had the best idea in the world. I told him I wanted to do a whole album of all British Invasion hits. Six months later he comes out with Pin-Ups [Bowie's cover album]. I was flabbergasted! When I would say anything to anyone, they would just laugh and say I was paranoid. I said, 'Something's up here.' They took me into the studio to record. I recorded 'Wonder Woman,' 'Mexican City,' 'Are You Boy Or Are You A Girl?,' 'Queen Age Baby,' all these incredible lyrics I had come up with. So I sent him all of my tapes and not long after that, Sherry is sitting at the house in Connecticut. Bowie called her up and said that he wrote this great song called 'Rebel Rebel' and plays her this demo. She listened to it and said, 'This sounds like one of Wayne's songs.' Basically, 'Queen Age Baby' is the mother of 'Rebel Rebel.' If he had never heard 'Queen Age Baby,' he would have never written 'Rebel Rebel.'"

This song was created in a spate of spontaneous inception. Alan Parker, the guitarist on "1984," recalled to Uncut magazine: "He (Bowie) said, 'I've got this list and it's a bit Rolling Stonesy – I just want to piss Mick off a bit.'"

"I spent about three quarters of an hour to an hour with him working on the guitar riff – he had it almost there, but not quite," Parker continued. "We got it there, and he said, 'Oh, we'd better do the middle...' So he wrote something for the middle, put that in. Then he went off and sorted some lyrics. And that was us done."

The first musical act to become established via Vine, Us the Duo comprises Michael Alvarado and his wife Carissa. This is the pair's first single since signing with Republic Records with the lyrics being an extension of the Alvarados' wedding vows.

The song features twice in the Fox animated motion picture, The Book of Life. Zoe Saldana, Diego Luna and Placido Domingo perform it during an important part of the movie, and Us the Duo's original version plays over the end credits. Walk On The Wild Side Song Chart

This song is about cross-dressers who come to New York City and become prostitutes. "Take a walk on the wild side" is what they say to potential customers. Each verse introduces a new character. There is Holly, Candy, Little Joe, Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jackie. The characters are all cronies of the infamous Andy Warhol Factory, as was Lou.

Reed had an empathy for these characters that comes through in the song, as he struggled with his sexuality for most of his life. His parents even tried to "cure" his homosexuality when he was young.

"Little Joe" refers to Joe Dallesandero, who was also one of Andy's kids in the factory. He was in several films by Warhol. Sugar Plum Fairy is the nickname of actor Joe Campbell. (thanks, Jamie - New Orleans, LA; Laura - New York, NY)

"Holly," "Candy," and "Jackie" are based on Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, and Jackie Curtis. They are all real drag queens who appeared in Warhol's 1972 movie Women In Revolt. Woodlawn also appeared in Warhol's 1970 movie Trash, and Curtis was in Warhol's 1968 movie Flesh.

Said Reed: "I always thought it would be kind of fun to introduce people to characters they maybe hadn't met before, or hadn't wanted to meet."

In an interview with The Guardian published December 13, 2008, Holly Woodlawn said: "My father got a job at a hotel, so we moved from New York to Miami Beach. I was going to school, getting stones thrown at me and being beaten up by homophobic rednecks. I felt I deserved better, and I hated football and baseball. So, aged 15, I decided to get the hell out of there and ran away from home. I had $27, so hitchhiked across the USA. I did pluck my eyebrows in Georgia. It hurt! My friend Georgette was plucking them and I was screaming, but all of a sudden I had these gorgeous eyebrows and she put mascara on my eyes. We ran into some marines in Lafayette in South Carolina. They tried to attack me. I was 15 and not used to this stuff. I was sitting in a car with this marine, terrified that he was going to rape me and kill me. I said, 'I've never done this before.' He said, 'You don't wanna have sex with me?' I said it wasn't that I didn't find him attractive, I just didn't want to do it. But he was wonderful. He protected me. While Georgette was in a motel screaming and yelling with 18 marines but having a good time, he said, 'When you're with me, nothing will happen to you.' And they drove us all the way to New Jersey.

In New York I was living on the street. Then I met Jackie Curtis and Candy Darling, and they'd watch Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo movies at 1am. There was this club called Max's Kansas City. Jackie and Candy had just done this movie called Flesh, and they said, 'You have to meet Andy [Warhol]. He's gonna make you a superstar.'

I didn't want to be a superstar. My wig looked like yak hair. One day Jackie put on a show and I was in the chorus. I saw this bag of glitter and a jar of Vaseline, and smeared myself with it and got this boyfriend to throw the glitter on me. [Director] Paul Morrissey said, 'I don't know who she is but she's a star.' Next thing Paul's calling me up to star in a movie called Trash, and the rest is history.

One day a friend called me and said, 'Turn on the radio!' They were playing 'Walk On The Wild Side.' The funny thing is that, while I knew the Velvet Underground's music, I'd never met Lou Reed. I called him up and said, 'How do you know this stuff about me?' He said, 'Holly, you have the biggest mouth in town.' We met and we've been friends ever since."

In a 1972 interview with Disc and Music Echo, Reed described this as an "outright gay song," saying it was "from me to them, but they're carefully worded so the straights can miss out on the implications and enjoy them without being offended. I suppose though the album is going to offend some people."

This was not banned by the notoriously conservative BBC or by many US radio stations because censors did not understand phrases like "giving head." Depending on the regional US market, the song was, however, edited for what we now call political correctness. Reed leads into the female vocalists' "Doo, doo-doo" hook with the words, "And the colored girls say," but some stations played a version that replaced the phrase with, "And the girls all say."

Reed recorded this two years after leaving The Velvet Underground, a band that was very influential, but not commercially successful. Transformer was Reed's second solo album. His first album flopped, and for a while it looked like his music career was over.

David Bowie and Mick Ronson produced this track. They were big fans of Reed.

The sax solo at the end was played by Ronnie Ross, a Jazz musician who lived near Bowie in England. When Bowie was 12 years old, he wanted to learn the saxophone and begged Ross to give him lessons, which he eventually did. When they needed a sax player for this, Bowie made sure Ross was booked for the session, but didn't tell him he'd be there. Ross nailed the solo in one take and Bowie showed up to surprise his old friend.

The album version of this song runs 4:12. The single, which reached its US peak position of #16 on April 28, 1973, was edited down to 3:37 for radio play.

This came out at a time when audiences were intrigued by cross-dressing and homosexuality in music. "Glam Rock," where the performers wore feminine clothes, was big, and artists like David Bowie and Elton John were attracting fans both gay and straight.

This was a rare venture to the pop charts for Reed, who was not known for hit singles. This song provided his biggest hit, and it was his only Top 40 in the US.

The famous bass line was played by a session musician named Herbie Flowers. He was paid 17 Pounds for his work. Flowers was modest about his contribution to this and other songs. He once told Mojo writer Phil Sutcliffe about his role as a session musician, "You do the job and get your arse away. You take a £12 fee, you can't play a load of bol--cks. Wouldn't it be awful if someone came up to me on the street and congratulated me for Transformer."

Three songs on Transformer were commissioned by Andy Warhol for a Broadway musical he was planning based on Nelson Algren's novel A Walk On The Wild Side . The show was never materialized, but Reed kept the title and applied it to characters he knew from Andy Warhol's Factory to create this song. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France).

The female vocalists singing backup on this track were Karen Friedman, Dari Lalou and Casey Synge. In 1974, they recorded as "Thunderthighs" and had a UK hit with "Central Park Arrest."

Rap and Hip-Hop artists frequently sample this track. The most famous appropriation is by A Tribe Called Quest on their 1990 song "Can I Kick It?"

Marky Mark's second single, after "Good Vibrations," was a remake of this called "Wildside." He is now known as Mark Wahlberg and famous for movies like Boogie Nights and Rock Star.

At Live Aid in 1985 at Wembley Stadium, while U2 was playing their song "Bad," Bono improvised 2 Rolling Stones' songs and then this song into the end, changing the lyrics of "Walk On The Wild Side" to: "Holly came from Miami F.L.A., hitchhiked all the way across the USA, she could feel the satellite coming down, pretty soon she was in London town... Wembley Stadium, and all the people went, Doo-Doo-Doo-Doo-Doo." He then had the audience sing this line while he walked offstage and the band finished playing. (thanks, katie - somewhere, NJ)

The first new release by The Veronicas in seven years, this was made available on September 19, 2014. The sibling duo's previous music release was their second album Hook Me Up, which arrived in November 2007.

Jess Origliasso and Lisa Origliasso of The Veronicas wrote this with DNA Songs, a songwriting and production company founded by Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci in Australia. "Sometimes a song comes along that no amount of planning as a songwriter can prepare you for," they said. "This song was written and recorded at 1am in the throes of emotion. We reworked it only a handful of times, leaving it in the raw state it was created."

"We have never been afraid to write from our hearts, and there is something that captures us when writing about heartbreak that we will always want to share," the Origliasso sisters continued. "Because in the places we are broken, these are the places we learn to become the strongest. This is our time of rebirth."

The song's music video, which was filmed at Sydney's State Theatre, follows a group of jealous ballerinas and their unprincipled dance instructor. The clip was inspired by Darren Aronofsky's 2010 movie Black Swan.

Branch wrote this with her high school best friend Jenifer Hagio. When they were younger, the two would dream about which clothes they would wear when they finally made it to the Grammys.

Hagio and Branch were "known as the musicians of Red Rock High School" (It's in Sedona, Arizona).

Features Paul Warren playing a chamberlain, an instrument that samples string noises, sort of like a keyboard.
