Faith in Others Lyrics

The grave of our youth is up ahead
And life has become a burden
We move in circles of suppressed despair
Waiting for the sun
And turning stones to find evidence
But it hides in the recesses of our hearts

A written decree of our loss
And we carried no faith in the cross
And the cold years are coming
For the victims of a longing

Out through the doors of starvation
And into the rains of damnation
Where the bitter winds are singing
For the victims of a longing

We carried along through squalor
With an inborn need to dominate and possess
It gives birth to an anger inside
And we can't control this
The blood of departure in our tracks
Dripping from our emptying vessels
Your hand reached out to hold mine
But you're grasping melting ice

Asleep in the rain
A child once again
And the ghost in my head
Has forgiven me

Lifted his curse upon me

  • The closing track on Pale Communion, this was the first song that frontman Mikael Škerfeldt wrote for the album. Speaking with Noisey , he explained: "Normally when I start writing for a record, I'm a bit nervous. You don't know whether or not you're going to be able to come up with something that you like or come up with something at all, to be honest. I was inspired because pretty early on, I wrote a song on the new album — the last song on there, which I ended up being really happy with. So I had some type of guidelines which was more melody, I think."

"[2011's] Heritage was somewhat deliberately f--ked up all over the place because I love f--ked-up-all-over-the-place-type music, but I wanted to do something more melodic with this album, so there's stronger vocal melodies and more melodies overall for this album," Škerfeldt continued. "I was pretty consistent with that frame of mind throughout the writing process, so at least I had a plan with this album, and I normally don't, to be honest."

    Mr. Lonely Lyrics

    Lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I have nobody for my own
I am so lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
Wish I had someone to call on the phone

    Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
    That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home

    Letters, never a letter
I get no letters in the mail
    I've been forgotten, yes, forgotten
Oh how I wonder, how is it I failed

    Now I'm a soldier, a lonely soldier
Away from home through no wish of my own
    That's why I'm lonely, I'm Mr. Lonely
I wish that I could go back home

  • The fourth and last of the #1 singles by Vinton, this is the only one that was not a cover. Vinton wrote the song with Gene Allan, a songwriter who worked for Don Kirshner's Aldon Music.
  • This was recorded in the make-or-break session in which Vinton recorded "Roses Are Red (My Love)," in 1962. His label, Epic Records, was going to drop him if he did not produce a hit. Said Vinton: "I wrote the song when I was in the Army, and when I did my first recording session - which was 'Roses Are Red' - the producers asked if I had any songs of my own. I played them 'Mr. Lonely' and they loved it."
  • After he recorded this song, Epic Records refused to release it, preferring to offer it to Buddy Greco, who was another artist in their stable. Greco's version stalled at #64 in the US in 1962, and that looked like the end of "Mr. Lonely." However, when Epic Records scheduled the release of a greatest hits LP for Vinton, the singer insisted upon the inclusion of his mothballed recording of this song. It became a hit quickly after the release of the LP, and as with "Blue Velvet," the single was released in response to popular demand.
  • This remains Vinton's favorite recording. It has endured through numerous cover versions. Frank Chacksfield, Franky B., The Lettermen, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Red Squares and The Village Stompers all recorded the song. Akon's 2005 hit Lonely is based on a sample of this song.

Do you wanna go to heaven tonight
    Leave the evidence far behind
    Say alright, alright
Do you wanna be my lover tonight
We can leave everybody else behind
    Say alright, alright

Do you wanna see heaven tonight?
Underneath those lights you will look so beautiful
Do you wanna see the Stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall

Do you wanna be my love tonight?
And for all my life it could be so wonderful
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall

Maybe we should just run away
Never look back 'cause the world decay
    Say alright, alright
Nothing matters ever since the day
You put a pin in my heart like a hand grenade
    Say alright, alright

Do you wanna see heaven tonight?
Underneath those lights you will look so beautiful
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall

Do you wanna be my love tonight?
And for all my life it could be so wonderful
Do you wanna see the stars before they fall?
See the stars before they fall

All I love being almost fearless
(Run) Run until we disappear and
Never let they come and get you
Never let them take my way just run

Do you wanna see heaven tonight?
Underneath those lights you will look so beautiful

  • According to James Michael, this Modern Vintage track is, "a quintessential Sixx: A.M. song." The Sixx: A.M. vocalist explained: "I think 'Stars' might be one of the best songs we've ever written. It does everything Sixx: A.M. does on a heightened level."

"It's one of the most aggressive rock songs we have — the tempo is a lot faster than we usually write," Michael continued. "It's one of those moments you always hope for as a songwriter, where the melody line, lyric and the track all marry. That chorus explodes — it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, and I've heard it thousands of times."

    Blue Velvet Lyrics

    She wore Blue Velvet
Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light

    From the stars
    She wore blue velvet
Bluer than velvet were her eyes
Warmer than May her tender sighs

    Love was ours
Ours a love I held tightly
    Feeling the rapture grow
    Like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow of

    Blue velvet
But in my heart there'll always be
    Precious and warm, a memory

    Through the years
And I still can see blue velvet
    Through my tears

  • After the success of his song "Blue on Blue" (#3 in mid-1963), Vinton decided to record an album of "Blue" songs ("Blue Moon," "Blue Hawaii," "Am I Blue," etc). As he was picking up sheet music in Nashville, Vinton received a gift from publisher Al Gallico: a copy of "Blue Velvet," which in 1951 was the last major hit for Tony Bennett. The song fit very well with Vinton's project, as every song on the album had "Blue" in the title.
  • This was considered a throwaway, recorded in only two takes. Vinton was not impressed with the recording, but Epic Records released it as a single in response to popular demand. His recording caught on and is considered the definitive version.
  • Written by Bernie Wayne and Lee Morris, the song had also been recorded by The Clovers in 1955. Other artists to record the song include Sammy Davis, Jr., The Countdown Singers, Jackie Gleason, Brenda Lee, The Lettermen, Barry Manilow, The Moonglows, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
  • In 1986, a movie called Blue Velvet, directed by David Lynch, was released. This song had a prominent role: It was used in a gruesome scene where we discover a human ear that had been cut off someone's head. The song completely contradicted the mood of the scene, which apparently was the point. The movie brought the song to a new audience, although it was now associated with a severed ear.
  • Vinton's version stalled at #33 in the UK in 1963 - however, on reissue in 1990 it peaked at #2, and, by some amazing coincidence, at one point it occupied at chart slot adjacent to a near-namesake: Alannah Myles' "Black Velvet." (thanks, Dave - Cardiff, Wales)
  • A cover by Lana Del Rey soundtracked a commercial for clothing company H&M. Del Rey's version also featured on the re-release of her 2012 debut album, Born To Die.

  • SOJA lead singer and guitarist Jacob Hemphill told Artist Direct the story behind this song. "I don't know if all human beings are like this, but I always have these memories I can't explain," he said. "I'll walk down a street and have déjÁ  vu. They call it different things. I'll meet someone and I'll know I've met this person before—maybe not now but at some other point."

"Then, I'll have these dreams," Hemphill continued. "They'll be as quiet as a mouse or as loud as a thunderstorm. The dreams remind me of the things that used to be there. The lucid dreams are the ones that happen during the day when you fall asleep for twenty minutes. You have a lot more control over the dream. Once I learned I could control these daytime dreams more, I could start to use my time in the dreams to figure out these epic nighttime dreams I had. Why are these dreams showing me my reality now and what my reality in the past used to be?"

"It ties into the album theme because it all comes down to looking inside," he concluded. "It's the same as 'Treading Water.' If you look inside, you'll realize the truth was in there somewhere."

  • This song was a #1 US hit in September 1976, becoming one of the biggest Disco hits of the era. When the movie Saturday Night Fever hit theaters in December, 1977, the song was used in a famous scene from the movie where John Travolta takes over the dance floor - an appropriate choice since the song is specifically about dancing.

"You Should Be Dancing" was included on the soundtrack along with five other songs performed by the Bee Gees (plus another they wrote: "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Elliman). The album sold over 15 million copies in the US, marking the Bee Gees as a Disco act when their earlier output was more charitably classified as Blue-Eyed Soul. Decades later, a new generation discovered the group's earlier work and the Disco taint began to fade, but for Barry Gibb, the memories of the backlash didn't. "It still haunts me like hell," he told Mojo in 2001 about this time. "Every time anyone asks me about it my mouth goes dry."
  • Along with "Jive Talkin'," this is one of two Bee Gees songs on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack that had already been released. It first appeared on their 1976 Children Of The World album.
  • John Travolta prepared for the Saturday Night Fever movie by practicing his dance moves to this song. When he was told by the producers that "Night Fever" would be used for the sequence for which he was practicing, Travolta insisted that "You Should Be Dancing" be used instead.

The dance sequence from the movie was choreographed by Deney Terrio, host of the TV show Dance Fever.
  • Stephen Stills of Crosby, Stills and Nash played percussion on this track. He recalled to The Independent August 17, 2013: "We were in the studio next door making a CSN album and David (Crosby) was all full of himself and saying this is going to be the album of the year. I went, "No it's not, that's being recorded across the hall," 'cause I'd heard some of that Saturday Night Fever stuff and I knew it was totally unique and going to be a monster. So I played timbales and for a long time that was my only platinum single."
  • This featured at the end of the movie Despicable Me, where the minions replace ballet music with the song so everyone can dance.

  • Released on April 9, 2014 as the second official single from Tyga's The Gold Album: 18th Dynasty, this song features a guest appearance from Atlanta rapper Young Thug.
  • A hookah is a a Middle eastern water pipe often made of glass. It is used for vaporizing and smoking flavored tobacco called shisha.

A 2005 WHO report states that smoking using such a waterpipe is not a safe alternative to cigarette smoking. In an hour-long smoking session of hookah, users consume around 150 times the volume of smoke of a cigarette. Tyga acknowledges the dangers when he raps to his girl: "Looking at your future baby put down the cigarette."
  • The beat was supplied by Atlanta producer London on da Track, who is a frequent collaborator of Young Thug. He has also supplied production for other ATL spitters including Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Rich Homie Quan and T.I.
  • The song's music video was filmed on April 21, 2014, and directed by Alex Nazari and Tyga. The clip naturally features plenty of tobacco smoke from hookah water pipes.

  • This was written and produced by Tommy James after the dissolution of his group The Shondells. In our interview with Tommy James, he told the story of the song: "I was dying to get back in the studio, and I had written a song called 'Tighter, Tighter.' It was going to be my single. And right about that time, my wife's friend was managing a group called Alive 'N Kickin' from Brooklyn. And they were a good group, a really good group, I went out to see them a couple of times in different places. And I was going to produce them at some point, but sometime in the future. I didn't have the time for it right now, didn't have the head for it. So I went in and I laid down a track of this song called 'Tighter, Tighter,' and I just didn't like the way it was coming out, it just wasn't right. Somehow – it didn't happen to me very often, but I just miscalculated the vocal, and I didn't like the way I sounded on it. I really believed the song was a hit - I had written it with Bob King, my new songwriting partner at that time. And so I remembered this group. They had a male and a female lead singer that would switch off leads. So I re-wrote the song as a duet. I called them up and said, 'You guys, can you come down here and add your players on top of what we've already done, and I think you've got a hit with this.' So they came in and that's just what we did. We put their guitar player on, we put their keyboard player on, we added some horns, and Pepe and Sandy sang the lead, and then Pepe, Sandy and I did backgrounds. And it came out beautiful, we took it to (James' record label) Roulette, Roulette put it out, and it went #1 immediately. It was a big hit record for them. It ended up being the first group outside of the Shondells that I produced. I produced a few other acts, Patti Austin, a group called Troy, which was Benny Mardones who later had a hit with 'Into The Night' in the late '70s. I was producing a few people and having some fun. And then I basically went back in and recorded as a solo act from that point on."

Got no time for the conversations or funny shit
Nigga, only the reals who I get my money with
Used to turn on the TV, see what I want
And now the same one I dreamed about, the same one I'm stuntin' in
    In the 6-2, almost 26
And every nigga that I'm with got a zip
I look at this shit as one big table and best believe every nigga I'm with got a sit
They try to hold us back, paint a picture of us, then sell it straight to the public
You young, black, then you thuggin'
What they don't talk about the kid that came from nothin'
Who stuck to what he believed in and turned himself into something great
They should use that story to motivate
But instead they'd rather focus on the fact that he's a pothead
Not the fact there's not a lot where I lived
    25 and not dead

I'm tryna tell you somethin', this shit's real
When you work hard to get it that's how you feel
The man that start what they knew and they ain't away
We started small to them houses in the hills
To them houses in the hills
    Houses in the hills
    Houses in the hills
To them houses in them hills

You make a little money, take care and right yourself
And people start coming up with they hand out
People take their stresses and make them yours
Well that's just what comes with being a man
I try to do all that I can to make sure that
My son grow up without having to see half of the stuff I've been through
But in life we all got our own path
Don't understand that by now you won't begin to
Cop another Rolex or Porsche try and get even with me
Pulled up to the club, swear it looked like the dealer with me
Cause we had so many cars it was stupid
So I don't see a reason to try and reason with me
Made a couple million and fast too
They ain't teach a young nigga that in the classroom
Or how to make your people better by taking knowledge and spreadin' it
Instead of being in the game being ahead of it

I'm tryna tell you somethin', this shit's real
When you work hard to get it that's how you feel
The man that start what they knew and they ain't away
We started small to them houses in the hills
To them houses in the hills

    Thousand dollar benefit plates
No matter how high the stakes, niggas never outta place
    Now I'm high, Empire State
Drunk stumblin', never will I tumble far from grace
I'm one of them under-celebrated greats
Under the influence of what Uncle Snoop threw me
Soon as I stepped off the plane
Switchin' four lanes like Jay and Jermaine
Killin' beats, visitin' grave sites and pissin' champagne
I been in the crib enjoying my hobbies
Suckers figured this'll be the perfect time to try me
    Try me
Assumptions that I'm lunchin', gettin' sloppy
I'm just gettin' better, seasoned veteran
Eagle eye perspective, scope before I go in
Come out with the whole hen
    A dollar and a dream
Have a house on the hill and the world on a screen

I'm tryna tell you somethin', this shit's real

We started small to them houses in the hills

  • This song finds Khalifa' and his frequent partner-in-rhyme Curren$y reflecting on their respective accomplishments. "I tried to capture some real moments in my life, and Curren$y is very much a part of my life - just as far as music, and [on] a personal level, that's my bro," the Taylor Gang boss told MTV News. "And a lot of my accomplishments, I feel like are our own accomplishments, like, both of us. So, I wanted to celebrate that on the album."

"We just sit back and reflect on where we came from and where we're at," Wiz added. "That song is like another one of those reflection records."

    Crystal Blue Persuasion Lyrics

    Look over yonder
    What do you see?
    The sun is a'rising
    Most definitely

    A new day is coming
    Ooh ooh
    People are changing
    Ain't it beautiful
    Crystal Blue Persuasion

    Better get ready
    To see the light
    Love, love is the answer
    Oooh ooh
    And that's all right

So don't you give up now
    So easy to find
    Just look to your soul
    And open your mind

    Crystal blue persuasion
    Mmm, mmm
    It's a new vibration
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Crystal, blue persuasion

    Maybe tomorrow
    When he looks down
    On every green field
    And every town
    All of his children
    And every nation
They'll be peace and good brotherhood

    Crystal blue persuasion
    Yeah
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Aha
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Aha
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Aha
    Ohhhh
    Crystal blue persuasion
    Aha

  • In our interview with Tommy James, he explained: "'Crystal Blue' was interesting. First of all, I was becoming a Christian at that time, and we never thought a thing about it. We never thought that doing something semi-religious was any big deal. We didn't think of it as being politically incorrect or anything like that. We just did what felt right. I wrote 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' with Eddie Gray and Mike Vale. Eddie came up with the little guitar riff, and Mike and I did the lyrics. And it just felt very right as a sort of semi-religious poetic song, but it turned out to be one of the hardest records I've ever made.

We went in and had a set of drums, we had guitars, we had keyboards, and by the end, we just realized we had totally overproduced the record. It just was not 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' anymore. It was a nice track, but wasn't right. So we had to produce the record, and then we had to un-produce the record. And one by one we just started pulling the instruments out, until we ended up with a conga drum, a bongo, a tambourine, a flamenco guitar, and a very light-sounding bass. We took out the drums completely. We took out all the keyboards except one, which was a Hammond. And basically ended up with about four instruments on it. And suddenly it became 'Crystal Blue Persuasion,' the song that we had written. It has kind of an effervescent sound about it, a lot of atmospherics that just weren't there when it had all those instruments on it. Suddenly when you emptied out the record it sounded like 'Crystal Blue' again. It had that light airy sound, which it needed to be right. And it took us about 6 weeks to do all that. It really was a very intricate un-production, pulling all the things out. Actually, it was tougher than putting them in because you didn't want to mess up the record, but you wanted to empty it out. So it came out and went #1 for us. It was the follow-up to 'Sweet Cherry Wine.' We were in Hawaii when it went #1, and I often think of Hawaii as I think of 'Crystal Blue Persuasion.'"
  • When we asked James if "Crystal Blue" is a reference to the Book of Revelation, he replied: "Yes, it is. It's out of the Bible. The imagery was right out of Chapter 19 of the Book of Revelation, about the lake of crystal, and just what John sees. The imagery was just right there. 'Crystal blue persuasion,' although those words aren't used together, it was what the image meant to me."
  • The lyrics, "It's a new vibration," are about James becoming Christian, but many listeners had their own interpretation. He explained: "Of course, everybody thinks if they don't understand what you're talking about it must be about drugs. But it wasn't. We were going through a real interesting time back then, and a very wonderful time. Everybody in the band, by the way, became Christian. And we're very proud of it. And 'Crystal Blue Persuasion' was sort of our way of saying that in a kind of pop record way."
  • This would have made a great performance at Woodstock, and the song was peaking on the charts at the time of the famous festival. Tommy James & the Shondells were invited to appear, but, as Tommy explains: "Like dopes we turned it down. I gotta tell you what – we were in Hawaii at the foot of Diamond Head. This was in August of '69, and we played a date in Hilo, and then we had two weeks off and then we were gonna play in Honolulu. They put us at these gorgeous mansions at the foot of Diamond Head, right on the ocean. And our biggest decision of the day was, Do I go in the ocean or in the swimming pool? We were sitting around drinking margaritas, and it was wonderful. And I get this call from JoAnn, my secretary, and she said, 'Artie Kornfeld was up,' Artie Kornfeld was one of the principals at Woodstock, and he was also a friend of mine. He produced the Cowsills and a whole bunch of other acts, and he was very successful producer. We had the same lawyer. And so she said, 'Artie was up and asked if you could play at this pig farm up in upstate New York.' I said, 'What?!?' 'Well, they say it's gonna be a lot of people there, and it's gonna be like a really important show.' And I said, 'Did I hear you right? Did you say would I leave paradise, fly 6,000 miles, and play a pig farm? Is that what you just asked me?' She said, 'Well, you could put it like that, but it's gonna be a big show. It's important.' I said, 'Well, I'll tell you what, if I'm not there, start without us, will you please?' And I hung up the phone. And they did. And by Thursday of that week we knew we messed up really bad. (laughing) But in the end I think I got probably more mileage out of that story."

  • Ace originally wrote the rhythm guitar part for this instrumental in the mid 2000s, but didn't finish off the tune . "It just evolved," he told May The Rock Be With You , "and it's just amazing how it all turned out with all its different sections and the picking part at the end reminiscent of 'Fractured Mirror,' I think I'm real happy with the way that one turned out."

    Mirage Lyrics

I see you standing in the alleys and the hallways
Wait a second, you're gone now
I run to touch you but you vanish through the doorway
    And oh how
Hard it is to live without you
    I love everything about you
Now I know you're really gone
But my imagination is so strong
That I see you coming into view
And your face is telling me that you
Oh yeah oh, want to be by my side
Oh yeah oh, now it's finally time
    Wait a second

Mirage, that's all you are to me
    Mirage, something I only see

So I keep walking through the alleys and the hallways
    Where are you
I keep remembering the kissing in the doorways
    The car too
How it all comes back to me
    The movies every Saturday
The place we used to go to eat
I want so much to have it like it used to be
That I see you coming into view
And your face is telling me that you
Oh yeah oh, want to be by my side
Oh yeah oh, now it's finally time
    Here it comes again

Mirage, that's all you are to me
    Mirage, something I only see

Just a mirage, that's all you are to me
Just a mirage, something that I only see
Just a mirage, that's all you are to me
Just a mirage, something that I only see

  • This came about as the result of a studio mistake. Producer Bo Gentry inadvertently put the tape of their previous hit, "I Think We're Alone Now," on the player backwards. The group started listening to the chord progression as they played the reversed tape, and band member Ritchie Cordell wrote the lyrics to it.
  • This was released as the follow-up to "I Think We're Alone Now." (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 2)
