Whenever, Wherever

Shakira is from Columbia, and Spanish is her native language. The Spanish version of this is called "Suerte," which means "Luck."

This was Shakira's first album recorded in English.

Shakira was a star in Latin America, but this was her first hit in English-speaking countries. The video for this, which was directed by Francis Lawrence, became a huge hit on MTV and introduced her to a new set of fans.

Gloria Estefan wrote this with Shakira. Estefan has had tremendous success recording in both English and Spanish, but like Shakira, her core fan base is Spanish-speaking.

The song is about being willing to travel the world in order to be with a distant lover. Most of the songs Shakira writes are about love.

This was written in Spanish, and the Spanish lyrics are more meaningful. The English translation is a little goofy, with lines like "Lucky my breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains." The lack of lyrical depth did not hurt, as the beat, the chorus, and the video made this a hit.

One of the key instruments are Andean pan flutes. They are common in Arabic music, which is a big influence on Shakira.

After this was released, Shakira's boyfriend was the subject of a great deal of controversy. She was dating Antonio De La Rua, the son of Argentinean president Fernando De La Rua, who resigned in December, 2001 with Argentina's economy in turmoil. On his last day in office, 5 protesters were shot by police guarding the presidential palace, which enraged Argentines as well as many other Latin Americans. Considering Shakira guilty by association, Tower Records refused to sell her CD at the request of the president of Tower Records Argentina. The younger De La Rua wrote speeches for his father. He was in the video for another song on the album called "Underneath Your Clothes."

This beat-driven track is the debut single from No Devotion, a band formed by the remaining members of Lostprophets after singer Ian Watkins was jailed for 35 years in December 2013 for a string of child sex offenses. Bassist Stuart Richardson said: "We didn't know if we would ever make music again or if people would look us in the face. Everything felt like it was over."

Watkins is replaced by Geoff Rickly, formerly of Metal band Thursday and current United Nations member. The original plan was for Rickly to make a documentary about Lostprophets' former members' efforts to start a new band. "Then," Rickly recalled to Billboard magazine, "I went to dinner with their manager and she was like 'No, you should sing for the new band.'"

Unsure at first, some instrumental demos lured Rickly with a sound he'd never tackled before. "In Thursday we were never known for hooks," he told Billboard. "But the lyrics are totally one hundred percent autobiographical. I guess that's the one thing I've carried over from Thursday… United Nations is dark humor about politics; this is very sincere and heartfelt."

Dirty Vegas vocalist Steve Smith wrote this. He has said that it is a personal song, but in his case, it had a happy ending.

Dirty Vegas formed when DJs Paul Harris and Ben Harris (no relation) saw Smith perform and asked him to join them. Paul and Ben had been recording as The Hydrogen Rockers. Smith brought "Days Go By" to the studio the first time they worked together.

Before this became a hit, the group released it as The Hydrogen Rockers. It became a dance hit, as many DJs used it at clubs. The group later changed their name to Dirty Vegas and released a different mix of this.

The group recorded this into a computer using Pro Tools software. This let them work on the song and make lots of changes without paying for time in a traditional recording studio.

The 3 members of the group are from the London area.

The video tells the story of a middle-aged man who break-dances all day once a year in the same spot he did in his youth in hopes that the woman he let go will come back to him. The video uses text to tell the story. The group is in the video only briefly - they sat in the car at the stoplight in the first few seconds of the video. (thanks, Jenny - Miami, FL)

The video was first shown at RESFEST, a traveling show of short films from around the world. It was a huge hit and gained the attention of MTV, which put it in rotation.

As a result of the buzz created at RESFEST, a representative from Mitsubishi noticed the video and arranged to use the song in a commercial for the Eclipse. The ad shows a woman dancing wildly in the passenger seat as a man drives around, presumably looking for a club. It became a very popular spot in the US, and gave the song a great deal of exposure. Shortly after the ad appeared, many radio stations started playing the song.

When the commercial started airing, this became very much associated with Mitsubishi, who then used it in other ads to promote the Eclipse.

Dirty Vegas had not yet finished their CD when this became a surprise hit.

An acoustic version is included as a bonus track on the CD.

In 2003, this won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

Director Cameron Crowe asked Paul to do this song for his movie, Vanilla Sky. Crowe used to be a reporter for Rolling Stone magazine, and is married to Nancy Wilson from the group Heart. Music plays a big role in his movies - he used Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" in Say Anything, and based his 2000 movie Almost Famous on his experiences as a rock writer.

The lyrics were inspired by a waiter who brought a dish to McCartney's table that he hadn't ordered.

This was Faith Hill's debut single and her first #1 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Charts.

Written by Pat Bunch, Jaime Kyle and Will Rambeaux, this song was performed by two other Country bands before Faith Hill made it a hit. The first was Zaca Creek on their 1992 album Broken Heartland, then Evangeline for their 1993 album French Quarter Moon.

The video is very raunchy and sexually explicit. It features Aguilera in some kind of underworld wearing very little clothing. In one scene, she wins a fight, and in another she dances suggestively in a shower. It created a new image for Aguilera, who suffered a breakdown before recording the album and wanted to take more control of her career. She was 21 when this was released.

Shortly after the video came out, Tina Fey said on Saturday Night Live that it "Gave her television genital warts."

In the boxing ring scene of the video, there are posters promoting the sex industry in Thailand. Written in Thai, they read, "Thailand's Sex Tourism" and "Young Underage Girls." The Thai TV stations banned the video and the government asked for an apology, which they got from the video's director, David LaChapelle, who claimed he had no idea what the posters said and had no intention of offending the people of Thailand.

The extra "R" in the title is intentional. Nelly did the same thing earlier in the year on his hit "Hot In Herre" and the rapper Chingy did it in 2003 on "Right Thurr." The bonus letter is supposed to emphasize the title, not just screw up our spell-checker.

This was the first single from Aguilera's sophomore album. Her first album was released in 1999 and sold over 8 million copies.

The song didn't get a lot of radio play, but the video did very well. It was #1 on MTV's Total Request Live, and most likely responsible for sending more than one adolescent directly through puberty.

Speaking about this tune to The Guardian the band called it "the least Alt-J song ever." They wrote the cut to appease their American label who didn't think the lead track "Hunger Of The Pine" was a "big single."

The song was written in twenty minutes and is based around a "joke riff" that vocalist and guitarist Joe Newman had been playing in rehearsals.

Drummer Thom Green said: "I tried to make the drums as cliched as possible, there's none of my personality in it."

Newman added: "And I say, 'Gee whizz', which I'm not sure is a phrase I've ever uttered before. I can imagine it appealing to American truckers with Good Riddance To Bin Laden stickers!"

The song was released to United States modern rock radio on July 15, 2014 as the second single from This Is All Yours.

The song's music video was filmed along the Guadalupe River near Austin, Texas, by director Ryan Staake, who's also helmed clips for Diplo, Robyn and Major Lazer. The clip shows some college-aged kids having fun shooting off fireworks, river rafting and riding ATVs during their summer break.

Despite the song's almost-clichéd rock sound and tongue-in-cheek video, Joe Newman insisted to DIY magazine it wasn't their intention to subvert anything. Instead, it was something they came up with spontaneously. "We really just go with what feels right when we're playing together," he asserted.

"'Left Hand Free' was a leap into a completely different world for us, but we were enjoying it, so we kept doing it, we thought it was funny, we thought we could play characters," Newman added. "That's what we do with all of our music, we do it because it sounds good."

You can try it yourself (there are a few more coincidences, such as a gun when he's singing about a gun, explosions on beat...), all you have to do is play the movie, and at the Lion's second roar start the song. Nothing will happen for a few minutes, but just wait, it is kind of cool. What I thought was the best is when the song gets slower, and the film changes to a mellow scene for the exact amount of time. When the movie gets full of action, and explosions, the music picks up.

Guitarist Jerry Cantrell wrote this about the love of his life, Courtney Clarke. This song encompasses all of the insecurities and self-doubt inherent in a relationship.

This song finds Colt Ford duetting with Justin Moore. Ford told Billboard magazine he'd wanted to collaborate with the country star for a long time. "I think Justin Moore is the most underrated country singer in our genre, to be honest with you," he said. "He's one of the best out there. He and I have been friends for a while. We've been trying to do a song for the past two or three records, but just haven't found the right one. I think that one has a great melody, and it's perfect for us to do something about the farm."

This is one of the few songs on Thanks For Listening that Ford didn't write. It was composed by Clare Dunn, Blake Bollinger and Benjamin Caver. Dunn has performed as an opening act for Colt Ford.

In our interview with Colt Ford , he explained that growing up in Georgia, he could certainly relate to this song. "I know a lot about farm life," he said. "My dad grew up on a farm, and I grew up picking cotton and stuff. So I know that life, and I've spent a lot of time out there."
