Written entirely by Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden lead singer considers this a companion song to "Fell On Black Days," which also deals with ennui and depression. Speaking about "The Day I Tried To Live" with Entertainment Weekly, Cornell said: "The attitude I was trying to convey was that thing that I think everyone goes through where you wake up in the morning and you just don’t know how you are going to get through the day, and you kind of just talk yourself into it. You may go through different moments of hopelessness and wanting to give up, or wanting to just get back into bed and say f--k it, but you convince yourself you’re going to do it again. In A Little While

U2 played this song on their Elevation tour. Bono said it was written about a hangover - the night before appears to be a distant memory.

Bono mentions in the book U2 by U2 that the lyrics "A little girl with Spanish eyes/When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by" refer to his wife, Alison. Break Free

This song was produced by the Russian-German producer Zedd, who is best known for his hit tunes "Clarity" and "Stay The Night." The pair got together after Zedd overheard Grande performing at a label showcase while he was backstage, and mentioned to his team that he wanted to work with her. "[Grande's voice] is super-recognizable, it has a unique texture," he told Billboard magazine, "and really, that's all I'm looking for in a singer, is to have a voice that is really special and different from other voices you hear everyday."

The joy-infused song finds Grande celebrating her independence from a past love. Speaking with Billboard magazine, she called the experience of working with Zedd, "fantastic and super-experimental." Grande added: "I never thought I'd do an EDM song, but that was an eye-opening experience, and now all I want to do is dance."

The song features the awkward lyric, "Now that I become who I really are," written in order to force a rhyme from the song's previous line, "Never by the hands of a broken heart." Speaking with Time, Grande seemed sheepish about bending the laws of the English language, claiming the erroneous lyrics were Max Martin's and not hers. "I fought him on it the whole time," she told the magazine. "'I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyric, help me God!' Max was like, 'It's funny - just do it!' I know it's funny and silly, but grammatically incorrect things make me cringe sometimes."

Grande eventually conceded to the Swedish hitmaker. "I was like, whatever, let's do it and have some fun," she said. "I need to shake it off and let it go and be a little less rigid and old. I'm like, 90. I need to not be that old."

This wasn't Max Martin's first offense against the English language. Linguists recoiled with horror, for instance, at his "Sadness is beautiful. Loneliness is tragical" from Backstreet Boys' 2000 international hit "Shape of My Heart."

The music video was directed by Chris Marrs Pilier, who has also worked with The Black Keys and Britney Spears. The clip serves as a full-on homage to sci-fi cult movie classics as we see Grande play a space operative who battles aliens and saves the day during an intergalactic adventure. The visual later transitions to a spaceship dance party DJed by Zedd. "The inspiration for the 'Break Free' video is Barbarella, Star Wars and sort of like a retro take on space age, futuristic moments," Grande revealed to MTV News.

"I really wanted to do a take on what Barbarella wore for part of it," the singer added. "She did like 100 costume changes but my favorite outfit she wore was this beige sort of spacesuit that was very short and had these built in, like, hip pads type thing and I really wanted to do a take on that, so that's where the inspiration for the outfit came from."

Grande admitted to Billboard magazine that she initially hated her vocals, which she sings ahead of the beat. It was Max Martin who had the job of convincing her to sing in what she called a "more forward placement." "I was like no, no, no! Please just let me sing it how I would sing it," she mock-whined. "But he was like, 'Just try it. Trust me.'"

To Grande's surprise she loved the results. "I was so pleased when I tried something that I thought - no, that I knew I would hate."

Grande slurs her vocals a bit in this song. She says that when her grandmother heard the song, she told Ariana, "I don't know what the hell you're saying, but that's OK, because you sound so beautiful." (quote from a Rolling Stone interview)

Grande performed a stripped down version of the track on the first episode of Saturday Night Live's 40th season sat atop a piano. For her second number, Grande did a sultry and innuendo-filled version of "Love Me Harder" accompanied by the Weeknd.

Who Are You?

This song is based on a day in the life of Pete Townshend. It began with a very long meeting dealing with royalties for his songs: "Eleven hours in the Tin Pan, God, there's got to be another way." The "Tin Pan" he is referring to is "Tin Pan Alley" which is the name given to the collection of New York City-centered music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States. After this excruciating meeting he received a large check for royalties, left and went to a bar and got completely drunk. In that bar he encountered Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, who thought very highly of Pete for paving the way for Punk rock music. Townshend was conflicted because he feared The Who had sold out, and seeing The Sex Pistols, who were icons of rebellion, exasperated him even more. Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of New York). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f--k are you?" (thanks, Tim - Waterloo, Canada)

According to the 1985 Pete Townshend "My Generation" radio special, the song came out different than intended when Roger Daltrey sang it. Townshend said the song became a prayer from a destitute man. The man is on the street, looking up to the sky and asking God, "Who are you?"

The cover picture on the album features the band with drummer Keith Moon sitting on a chair that has the words "Not to be taken away" on the back of it. Moon passed away weeks after the photo was taken, and this was his last album. (thanks, Frank - Brandon, Canada)

This is the theme song for the TV show CSI (although when the huge "YEAAAHHH!!!!" is heard it's actually from "Won't Get Fooled Again," also by the Who, which was is spliced in). When CBS created spin-off shows, they used more Who songs: CSI New York uses "Baba O'Riley" and CSI Miami uses "Won't Get Fooled Again." The documentary The Kids Are Alright shows The Who in a studio recording this song. John, Keith, and Pete do the clapping part, but John comes in early, which leads the rest of the group to laugh hysterically. John also amuses Keith by twirling his hands between claps. Pete mocks Keith fixing his hair, and at the end holds his hand out for a high five, and you can hear a smack and him screaming, "OW!"

Townshend has only vague memories of writing this song, as he composed it with a hangover. He explained: "I'd like to think that where the song came from wasn’t the feet that I was drunk when I did the demo, but the fact that I was f--king angry with [manager] Allen Klein, and that the song was an outlet for that anger."

Roger Daltrey recalled to Uncut magazine: "We were getting incredible accolades from some of the new Punk bands. They were saying how much they loved The Who, that we were the only band they'd leave alive after they'd taken out the rest of the establishment! But I felt very threatened by the Punk thing at first. To me it was like, 'Well, they think they're f---ing tough, but we're f---ing tougher.' It unsettled me in my vocals. When I listen back to 'Who Are You?' I can hear that it made me incredibly aggressive. But that's what that song was about. Being pissed and aggressive and a c---!"

"It was only a few years after that I realized what a great favor Punk did the business," Daltrey added. "We toured with The Clash in 1982, we took them to the US with us, and I used to f---ing love watching 'em. I'm still a huge Joe Strummer fan."

The song's music video was directed by Peter Zavadil (Eric Church, Kip Moore, Lady Antebellum) and filmed in the Brothers Osborne's hometown. "We went back to our hometown of Deale, Maryland, just to kind of give people a little bird's eye view of what it's like where we come from," T.J. Osbourne explained. "We also wanted people to realize what really the perspective of 'Rum' was, which wasn't sitting on the beach. It was about really from the perspective of being in our hometown which is very blue collar, a lot of people who don't have money to go to the beach, so they kind of make their own little moments and their own paradise."

"'Rum' is about being in paradise no matter where you are," John Osborne added. "And to us, Deale was our own little blue collar paradise."

TJ and John Osbourne wrote this feel-good song about creating your own paradise with fellow Nashville songwriter Barry Dean. Speaking about the process that John and him go through when penning a tune, TJ said. "It all just kind of happens, you know. I mean it's really random. It comes and goes."

Crazy On You

Ann and Nancy Wilson wrote this song about Mike Fisher, who was an original guitarist for Heart (he eventually stopped performing and became their sound man) - he and Ann were dating. Roger Fisher, who is Mike's brother and also plays guitar in the band, is also credited as a writer on this song.

According to Ann, she felt that the world was crazy and sometimes maddening, but her relationship with Mike kept her balanced.

This was Heart's first single. They were based in Vancouver at the time and signed to a small label called Mushroom. When the album became a hit, they moved to Seattle and signed with a label owned by CBS Records.

The original band members were from Seattle. According to the liner notes for one of their greatest hits albums, they moved to Vancouver when some of the male members of the band would have been subject to the draft in the Vietnam War. They returned to Seattle when that was no longer a threat of them being called up in the draft. Lead singer Fran Healy wrote the song while on holiday in Israel. He wanted to go somewhere sunny because in his hometown of Glasgow it rained all the time. In an interview at the Live 8 concert, he explained that he was spending a short holiday in the southern vacation city Eilat in the middle of the winter. Little Maggie

Plant debuted this song on June 28 2014 at the UK's Glastonbury festival. He described it to Q magazine as a "trippy thing that starts off sounding like you're in (country music venue) the Ryman in Nashville, and then halfway through you find yourself in (city in South West England) Bristol."

This is a reworking of the Appalachian folk song. Plant closes Lullaby and…The Ceaseless Roar with another interpretation of the traditional tune in the guise of "Arbaden (Maggie's Babby)." Asked by Billboard magazine what attracted him to the song, Plant replied: "I wanted to do something that expressed my absolute connection with the American way -- despite the fact that I'm British, and despite the fact that halfway through I'm going to turn it into some strange sampled dirge that sounds like it's from Bristol, England. So we used electronics, a banjo, African instruments. It's all about getting hold of a song and messing with it."

Asked by Uncut magazine about the meaning of the Lullaby And… The Ceaseless Roar album title, Plant replied: "It's explanatory of all life. Life has a dynamic. It's not always so dramatic, but the extremes are... Well, the extremes. It probably follows right the way through the story of my choices in music. Where I've been pleased to rest along the way in music, with people, with certain musical attitudes and enthusiasms – and sometimes the very opposite of that. It's just like, what a life!"

I'm Waiting For The Man

This is another in the Velvet Underground's canon of songs about drugs. Not only does it fit nicely with "Heroin," it was also on the same album, and was also written by Lou Reed at about the same time as "Heroin," during Reed's attendance at Syracuse University in the early 1960s. It describes a trip to a Harlem brownstone near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 125th Street to buy drugs from a dealer, "the man" of the title. Once again, it neither condones nor condemns the experience, but merely describes it.

The song is about scoring 26 dollars worth of heroin in Harlem. According to Rolling Stone magazine, Reed said: "Everything about that song holds true, except the price." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

As described in The Velvet Underground: An Illustrated History of a Walk on the Wild Side , songs like "I'm Waiting For The Man," "Heroin," and "Venus In Furs" were what kept The Velvet Underground out of a record contract with Atlantic Records. Atlantic executive Ahmet Ertegun wouldn't take them unless they dropped these songs, and the Velvets, typically putting ideas ahead of money, just couldn't live with that. So their first album ended up with MGM Records instead. Even after their signing with Atlantic for their fourth album, Loaded, Ahmet specifically told them to tone down controversial material.

Lou Reed, John Cale, Nico, and Maureen Tucker have all recorded solo versions of the song.

This song was a big influence on David Bowie, who explained to Performing Songwriter magazine in 2003: "I actually played 'Waiting for the Man' in Britain with my band before the album was even released in America. Talk about oneupsmanship. A friend of mine came over to the states to do some work with Andy Warhol at The Factory, and as he was leaving, Andy said, 'Oh, I just made this album with some people. Maybe you can take it back to England and see if you can get any interest over there.' And it was still the vinyl test pressing. It hadn't got a company or anything at the time. I still have it. There's a white label on it, and it says 'Warhol.' He signed it. My friend gave it to me and he said, 'This is crap. You like weird stuff, so maybe you'll enjoy it.' I played it and it was like 'Ah, this is the future of music!' I was in awe. It was serious and dangerous and I loved it. And I literally went into a band rehearsal the next day, put the album down and said, 'We're going to learn this song. It is unlike anything I've ever heard.' We learned 'Waiting for the Man' right then and there, and we were playing it on stage within a week. I told Lou that, and he loved it. I must have been the first person in the world to cover a Velvet Underground song."

David Bowie covered the song in 1972, and included it on his album BBC Sessions. Lou Reed sang it in a duet with Bowie during Bowie's 50th birthday concert, known as "Live at 50." Bowie's version is on the soundtrack of the movie Almost Famous. (thanks, Br17is - pisa, Italy)

Besides David Bowie, amongst the many acts to cover "I'm Waiting For The Man," the most notable are Cheap Trick, Bauhaus, and the U.K. Subs. It shares credit with the Ramones' "53rd & 3rd" for being a famous song related to drugs (the Ramones one is about turning a trick for drug money) pinned to a specific New York intersection.

Leave the Night On

Sam Hunt started out as a star football player at Middle Tennessee State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After college he was briefly signed as a free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs before deciding to concentrate on a music career after co-penning Kenny Chesney's "Come Over," Billy Currington's "We Are Tonight" and Keith Urban's "Cop Car."

This song is the first single from Hunt's debut album after signing with MCA Universe in January 2014. "'Leave the Night On' is a song that sort of represents the album as a whole," he said. "I feel like it captures all of the elements in one song. As far as a song that could represent what the whole album is about, I think that's just a good choice."

The song made it into the history books by entering the Country Aircheck chart at No #36, the highest ever entry for a new artist on the tally.

The song's music video finds Hunt playing a fun-loving taxi driver. The singer also helped direct the clip alongside actor and cinematographer Brad Belander.

Montevallo is the name of a small town just south of Birmingham, Alabama. Hunt explained why he named his debut album after the little-known place. "I had never spent any time there, but went to school for several years in Birmingham and met a girl from Montevallo just as I was leaving to head to Nashville," he said. "Over the course of the next several years as I was on this journey musically, figuring out the songwriting thing and doing all the things that led up to this moment, I was writing songs that were inspired by the experiences I was living, and the girl from Montevallo had a lot to do with that and a lot of influence came from her and came from experiences in that town, came from other people in that town."

"It's just a word that when I see it or when I hear someone else say it, it has a whole new emotion attached to it, than when I first left Birmingham," Hunt added, "and that's the same emotion that I get when I read the track listing on the record."

Sam Hunt penned the tune with Josh Osborne and Shane McAnally in early 2013. "It was kind of an unassuming song," he told Billboard magazine. "I was excited because we wrote a cool song at the time and it stuck around as I continued to write more songs and started to work on an album."

"And then when I went into record the songs my producer Zach Crowell really took it to another place with the production," Hunt continued. "He spent a lot of time on it and we continued to build it as we went. The final product just turned out really cool. When we put it beside the rest of the songs for the record it just stood out as a good song that could really be a good introduction and also a good first single as far as being up tempo and covering a lot of the different elements that will be on the record in one song."

So what's happening in this song? Sam Hunt explained: "It's a song about a guy who's with a girl, and they've had a good evening and they're creeping up on the normal time to go separate ways, but neither of them want to end the night yet. So, they continue their adventure on into the late hours of the night."

This song climbed to the top of the country chart on November 15, 2014. Hunt's Montevallo album bowed at #1 on Top Country Albums the same week. In doing so, the singer became just the second solo male to reach the summit of both lists with a debut release in the SoundScan-era (since 1991). Billy Ray Cyrus previously ruled the country chart with his debut single "Achy Breaky Heart" and Top Country Albums with his rookie long player Some Gave All on June 6, 1992.

Hunt is the one who came up with the line "leave the night on without me." When he told Shane McAnally about it, McAnally replied, "I can't believe you would offer that hook to somebody else." He told Rolling Stone Country: "I was being funny but I was mad. He said, 'No, no I haven't written it; I just have an idea.' And I was like, 'Oh my God, thank you because I think that's the best lyric I've ever heard.' So we got with Josh Osborne and that was just a typical writing day. We were hashing it out and trying to find the phrasing and it went through some different phases, but that song is pretty close to the way it was written the day we wrote it."
