Kasabian songwriter and guitarist Serge Pizzorno told NME about this ambient shuffle: "This comes from the idea that if the people joined as a collective we could do so much damage. It's like when they blocked the petrol stations and we didn't have petrol for three days. There is power in that."

Pizzorno told the BBC about the inspiration for the song: "I went in a train carriage and I looked from one end to the other, and everyone was on their phone or looking at glass screens," he said. "I understand it. I've done it myself. But people used to look out the window and imagine. Boredom is such an important energy. That's when you think of new things, that's when you start creating. When did it happen that we stopped caring about what's going on around us? We're happy to get lost inside an infinite distraction machine."

Street poet Suli Breaks closes the track with a semi-rap about achieving our dreams if we all work together. It's an example of the Hip-Hop element that shows up in many Kasabian songs. Serge Pizzorno told Digital Spy : "Production-wise it's always been way more in that camp than rock music. I've never been much inspired by indie rock at all."

Part of the chorus is backwards. There was a lot of speculation that she was hiding a dirty message, but when reversed, the lyrics were simply the other part of the chorus: "Put my thing down, flip it, and reverse it."

This samples Blondie's 1979 disco hit, "Heart Of Glass," and it also uses part of the 1984 Rock Master Scott and the Dynamic Three song "Request Line" at the beginning.

At the end, after Missy says, "To my ladies...." it goes into a beat taken from a song by Bob James called "Take Me To The Mardi Gras." That beat, featuring some distinctive bells, was popularized by Run-D.M.C. on their 1986 song "Peter Piper." The beat was manipulated by Run-D.M.C.'s DJ Jam Master Jay, and "Peter Piper" is his showcase song on their Raising Hell album. Shortly after this was released, Jay was shot and killed in his New York studio.

The video was directed by Dave Meyers, who also did "Lose Control" and "We Run This." It won Video of the Year at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. It also won for Best Hip Hop Video. At the beginning of the show, Missy, Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera performed part of this. What most people will remember is Madonna kissing Spears and Aguilera before Missy came on stage.

This spent 10 weeks at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 without ever managing to make that final leap to the top spot.

Missy Elliott performed part of this song at halftime of the 2015 Super Bowl. The star of the show, Katy Perry, joined Elliott on stage and acted as a hypewoman/backup singer during this section, gamely imploring the crowd ("let's go Super Bowl!") before disappearing for a costume change.

Elliott's appearance was a shot of hip-hop adrenaline after the bouncy pop of Perry's "Teenage Dream" and "California Gurls," which were performed in a beach scene with dancing palm trees.

The song returned to #35 on the Hot 100 in the week following Elliott's 2015 Super Bowl performance. "Get Ur Freak On" also re-entered the chart at #40. They marked Elliott's first appearances on the tally as a lead act since 2008.

This bluesy ballad is about the brotherly love between Kasabian singer Tom Meighan and songwriter/guitarist Serge Pizzorno. Meighan noted to Q magazine: "It's a love song written for me." We've been through the mill me and Serge, so it was a lovely thing for him to do... I've got to go and write a song about him now (laughs)."

The song title is short for Scissor Paper Stone. Pizzorno told NME: "You write what you experience. It's difficult to find subjects when your life goes... y'know. Lovin' You

Riperton wrote this with her husband, Richard Rudolph. Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live is their daughter, and Riperton mentions her in the lyrics. In the end, she sings "Ma-ah-aha-aha-ah-ya." (thanks, Cher - Ny, NY)

Riperton worked with Stevie Wonder as a backup singer, and Stevie produced this track for her. Due to contractual obligations, Wonder's name could not appear on the credits, so he's listed as "Black Bull Productions" (Wonder's zodiac sign is Taurus, thus the bull).

Around 2000, this was featured in two commercials that gave it a renewed popularity. It was used in a Burger King commercial as well as a spot for Visa. In the Visa commercial, the guy in charge of music during Pittsburgh Steelers football games tries to buy "Who Let The Dogs Out," but is denied because the music store won't take his check. Since he doesn't have a Visa check card, he is forced to play this during the game, which does not go over well with the players or crowd.

Riperton died of cancer in 1979 at age 31. While this was her only hit, she was held in high regard in the music community.

Eddie Murphy's character sings this in the movie The Nutty Professor. The title track of Lana Del Rey's third album, the term 'Ultraviolence' comes from Anthony Burgess' novel A Clockwork Orange. Clare Preston-Pollitt of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation told MTV News that the word "ultraviolence" may have been inspired by a passage in Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita novel.

"It could be that Burgess had been influenced by a passage in Nabokov's Lolita where the narrator examines the word 'violence' and notes that the word exists next to the word 'violet' and 'violin' etc. in the dictionary," she said.

The song finds Del Rey exploring the close distance between love and pain.

The lyrics references The Crystals' controversial tune "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)." Carole King and Gerry Goffin wrote the song after their babysitter Little Eva told them about her relationship with an abusive boyfriend who beat her almost on a regular basis.

Del Rey told Grazia that the song was inspired by her time spent with an underground group that was dominated by a charismatic leader. "I used to be a member of an underground sect which was reigned by a guru," she said. "He surrounded himself with young girls and he had this insane charisma I couldn't resist as well. So I was in this, I'll call it sect, because I was longing for love and security."

"But then I found out that this guru wasn't a good but a bad person," she added. "He thought that he had to break people first before he could build them up again. At the end I left the sect."

The Ultraviolence title came before the recording process. "I think the album was called 'Ultraviolence' before I even had the songs," Del Rey told Radio.com . "That's because I just really love words. I'm kind of inspired by just a one-word title."

Ultraviolence sold 182,000 copies in its first week in the US, giving Lana Del Rey her first #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

The song title was inspired by Del Rey's connection to the seemingly conflicting emotions of aggression and softness. She explained to Complex magazine: "I like that luxe sound of the word 'ultra' and the mean sound of the word 'violence' together. I like that two worlds can live in one."

"I like a physical love," Del Rey added. "I like a hands-on love. [Pauses.] How can I say this without getting into too much trouble? I like a tangible, passionate love. For me, if it isn't physical, I'm not interested."

The music video was directed by Del Rey's boyfriend, the Italian photographer Francesco Carrozzini (Rita Ora's "I Will Never Let You Down," A$AP Rocky's "Phoenix," Beyoncé's "Jealous") and shot in the singer's signature grainy and sepia-toned style.

The clip shows Del Rey in a vintage white wedding dress singing the song's lyrics walking through the woods. As the visual proceeds, we realize that a mysterious man is filming the singer as she heads to the altar.

Lana Del Rey co-wrote this with Daniel Heath, a pal of her then-boyfriend Barrie-James O'Neill. It was one of three songs that he helped her pen for the album. She told The Los Angeles Times: "Dan was my first boyfriend's best friend. Back then he was doing cues for reality television — the shows were terrible, but his work was beautiful. I said, 'You've got to work with me on real records. The songwriting is simple: intro, verse one, a chorus, which repeats three times. The bridge is separate from everything else.'"

This was recorded Sept, 1957 at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Background vocals were added later at Petty Studios in Clovis, NM.

Charles Hardin and Norman Petty wrote this. Hardin is Buddy Holly (real name Charles Hardin Holley) and Petty was his producer and manager. Holly's first 2 singles flopped, but he had a string of hits after he started working with Petty. (thanks, David - Lubbock, TX, for above 2)

This was credited to The Crickets, who were Holly's band. Holly had a deal with Decca Records where some songs were released under his name and others credited to the band.

Decca is a name the company made up. It was chosen because it was easy to say and pronounced the same way in any language.

The album The Buddy Holly Story is a compilation of his songs that was released a few weeks after he died in a plane crash.

Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger wrote this track with his fiancée Ann-Marie Simpson. It was released to raise awareness for the Red Card To End Child Labor campaign.

After they'd becomeg interested in the group, which campaigns to put an end to the cruelest forms of child labor and slavery, Red Card reached out to Einziger and Simpson and asked if they'd be interested in writing a song for them. "It's a really difficult thing to do actually, at least for us… to write a song about something so serious," Einziger told Radio.com . "It was a challenge. But the cause was important enough for us to give it a shot. And luckily once we wrote the song a bunch of other people were happy to get involved and lend their voices and their musical skills."

The all-star track also features Pharrell Williams Travis Barker, composers Hans Zimmer and Dom Lewis, pop singer LIZ and Minh Dang, who is a former child sex slave. However, it is Einziger who performed lead vocal duties for the very first time with the guests appearing in on the choruses. Although his vocals were only intended to serve as a guide, the guitarist received so much praise that they ended up retaining his singing.

This was co-written by Buddy and Norman Petty and recorded in October, 1958. Petty was Buddy Holly's first producer and owned the studio in Clovis, New Mexico where all of Buddy's first recordings were made (Lubbock did not have a recording studio at the time).

This and "It Doesn't Matter Any More" were Buddy's first recordings to use orchestral string arrangements, which accentuated his vocal mannerisms. The strings were arranged by Dick Jacobs. (thanks, David - Lubbock, TX, for above 2)

Produced by Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo, the track was created for Eminem's group D-12 to rap over, with the intention of using it on the 8 Mile soundtrack. It never came together for D-12, but after 50 Cent signed with Dre's Shady/Aftermath label, he was brought into the studio and offered the track. According to Elizondo, he spent an hour writing the lyrics and recorded most of his vocals that night.

The song was released as 50's first single, and it became a huge hit, topping the US Hot 100 for nine weeks. Predictably, it was especially popular in clubs, where some DJs played it twice in a row to satisfy demand.

This was he first song 50 recorded with Dr. Dre, and his first on a major label. After being dropped by Columbia Records without releasing an album, 50's mix tapes became wildly popular in underground scene and he was heavily bootlegged on the Internet. This got the attention of Dr. Dre and Eminem, who signed him to very lucrative deal with their label, Shady/Aftermath Records.

The video shows 50 going through training at Shady/Aftermath Records to become a superstar. It proved prophetic as 50 did become a star. The album sold 872,000 copies the first week it was released. Eminem is the only rapper to sell more records in a week.

This won for Best Rap Video at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. 50 also won for Best New Artist In A Video.

50 Cent namechecks five different rappers in this song: Dr. Dre, Eminem, Xzibit, Lloyd Banks and Tupac. While the song is about going to a club in thug style, it covers a lot of ground, including some of 50's backstory ("been hit with a few shells").

Beyoncé recorded a version with different lyrics that was circulated on the Internet. Like the original, it became very popular in dance clubs. Her lyrics take the point of view of a girls' night out, and is called "Sexy Lil' Thug."

Mary J. Blige used the beat in song called "Hooked," which she recorded with P. Diddy.

Other rappers who used this beat include Bubba Sparxxx, who did a version called "In The Mudd," and Cadillac Tah, one of 50 Cent's rivals, who did an angry version called "There's A Snitch In The Club." The line, "Go shorty, it's your birthday," dates back to a 1994 song by Luther Campbell of The 2 Live Crew called "It's Your Birthday," where he rapped, "Go Sheila, it's your birthday." The owner of Campbell's copyright sued 50 Cent, accusing him of stealing the line.

In 2007, this song was used in a commercial for Vitamin Water, with an orchestra playing the instrumental and 50 Cent conducting. 50 really did have his money on his mind: he was an early investor in Vitamin Water, and made a huge profit when the company was acquired by Coca-Cola.

This song became a hip-hop classic in part because of the line at the beginning, which is a much more quick and contemporary birthday tune than "Happy Birthday."

"Every day it's someone's birthday," 50 said. "So it never loses it's relevance."

This was chosen as 50 Cent's debut single by chance. "We couldn't decide on the first single from Get Rich," Eminem recalled on Rap Genius . "It was going to be either 'If I Can't' or 'In Da Club.' We were torn, so me, 50, Paul, Chris Lighty, and Jimmy Iovine decided to flip a coin."

50 recalled to NME that he stayed out of the argument. "I didn't want to stir the pot," he said. "In the end, though, they were deadlocked, and so they asked me and I told them, real quiet: "In Da Club". And that was it. The rest was history."
