Fade To Black Lyrics

Life it seems to fade away
Drifting further everyday
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly loss this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me but now, he's gone

No one but me can save myself, but its too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye
Goodbye

Fade To Black
  • The song is about wondering if this life is worth living and wishing to be dead. In the last 2 verses the person in the song realizes life is too good to let go, but by that time, its too late: "No one but me, can save myself but its too late." (thanks, John - kenosha, WI)
  • Metallica wrote this after their equipment was stolen in early '84 and they had to start all over again. More specifically, James Hetfield wrote the lyrics in response to one of his amps being stolen. Not only was this amp his favorite, but it was also the first amp he ever owned so it had a lot of sentimental value to him. The song is about losing everything and wondering if it is worth going on. (thanks, Brad - La Crosse, WI)
  • Kirk Hammett improvised while playing the final solo. He just thought about very depressing things while playing. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • For Jason Newsted , who joined Metallica on bass after Cliff Burton died in 1986, this is a very meaningful song. It was the last one he performed on tour with Metallica before leaving in 2001. He noted that it was his favorite Metallica song, and that it had "a lot of sentimental value." At the end of his final performance, Jason was in tears.
  • This was the first ballad Metallica released. In an MTV interview with James Hetfield on the set of their MTV Icon special, he explained that he and Lars Ulrich were obsessed with death at the time.
  • Jason Newsted's former band Flotsam And Jetsam had a completely different song called "Fade To Black" on their 1986 album Doomsday For The Deceiver.
  • Metallica was playing this song at their 1992 concert in Montreal's Olympic Stadium when James Hetfield was burned badly by wayward stage pyrotechnics.
  • The song's title is never mentioned in the lyrics, although the Metallica song "The Memory Remains" on their 1997 album Reload does have "fade to black" in the lyrics. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 4)
  • Sonata Arctica covered this for the 2002 compilation album A Tribute to the Four Horseman. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Disturbed covered this on the Music As A Weapon II CD. (thanks, Danny - Franklin, GA)
  • This was the last song played on the Long Beach, California, radio station KNAC before signing off on February 15, 1995 at 2 p.m. KNAC was the first radio station to play Metallica's music and the first to air the famous "Mandatory Metallica" night show. James and Lars were co-hosts on the day KNAC signed off. (thanks, Lucas - Los Angeles, CA)

    If I Go Lyrics

I could play anything for you
I could say what you want me to
I could lie, I could lie
'Cause you're wanting a little more
And I'm stuck in the middle of,
But I try, but I try
And I need time, and I need space
I need to live without your face

But If I Go will you love me?
Will you love me until I can
Do you know will you want me?
Will you want me like that?
And if I leave, will it end?
    Will you need me again?
If I go, will you love me?
Will you love me when I come back?

I could be what you want me to
And you hold out and let me do what I want?
    What I want?
Tell me how long could you wait till you move on
And tell me that it's too late, it's too late

But if I go will you love me?
Will you love me until I can
Do you know will you want me?
Will you want me like that?
And if I leave, will it end?
    Will you need me again?
If I go, will you love me?
Will you love me when I come back?

Ooh, boy, oh when I come back, no oh oh, when i come back

But if I go will you love me?
Will you love me until I can
Do you know will you want me?
Will you want me like that?
And if I leave, will it end?
    Will you need me again?
If I go, will you love me?
Will you love me when I come back?

  • Godsmack lead singer Sully Erna wrote this. It became one of their most popular songs and hit #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart.
  • The CD was released on Halloween.
  • This was used in commercials for the US Navy's "Accelerate Your Life" recruiting campaign. The Navy also used the Godsmack song "Sick Of Life."
  • The radio version is significantly shorter.
  • On Godsmack's 2004 acoustic EP The Other Side, there is a new version of this song called "Asleep." The music is softer, the song is much shorter and there is the presence of a piano in the song. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for all above)

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did I want to be here again
    And I don't remember why I came

    Candles raise my desire
    Why I'm so far away
No more meaning to my life
    No more reason to stay
Freezing feeling, breathe in, breathe in
    I'm coming back again

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did want to be here again
    And I don't remember why I came

Hazing clouds rain on my head
    Empty thoughts fill my ears
Find my shade by the moon light
Why my thought aren't so clear
Demons dreaming, breathe in, breathe in
    I'm coming back again

I'm not the one who's so far away
When I feel the snake bite enter my veins
Never did want to be here again

    Voodoo
  • Probably Godsmack's most popular song, it was written by lead singer Sully Erna and bass player Robbie Merril. Sully is a member of the Wiccan religion and its influence on this song is obvious. It uses many percussion instruments used in tribal celebrations.
  • Sully decided to write this song after watching the movie The Serpent and the Rainbow, a film involving Voodoo and Witchcraft. Many believe it is about drugs, specifically a heroin addiction ("The snakebite enter my veins").
  • This is the last track on Godsmack's self-titled album. After the CD ends, there is about 2 minutes of silence, then percussion instruments can be heard, the same kind used in "Voodoo." Under the constant drum beat, voices of the band members and their producers can be heard talking about how they put the album together. Eventually, a crowd is heard in the background chanting the chorus of "Voodoo." One of the voices chatting on this secret track is that of Katrina Chester of the band Luxx.
  • The version played on the radio is slightly shorter. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for all above)
  • When Erna's daughter Skyler was still in the womb, they would put headphones on her mother's belly and play this over and over. She still listens to Godsmack.
  • The vocals-only intro to this song was used as the title-theme for the short-lived MTV series Fear. (thanks, Jay - Reading, England)

    Day Drinking Lyrics

    Everybody's always waiting on Friday
Watching that clock and sittin' on go
Whatcha' say we find a little warm sunshine
And open up an umbrella on the patio

Don't need a reason or a happy hour
Ain't hanging around for a fireworks show
Get a head start a little sip of somethin'
Off and runnin', here we go
    1, 2, 3 here we go

Don't want to wait til the sun's sinking
We could be feeling all right
I know you know what I'm thinking
Why don't we do a little Day Drinking
Why don't we do a little day drinking

Blame it on the work day
    Blame it on the heatwave
Blame it on the tick-tock moving too slow
Blame it on any old thing you want to
Ready get set, baby here we go

Don't want to wait til the sun's sinking
We could be feeling all right
I know you know what I'm thinking
Why don't we do a little day drinking
    Day drinking, day drinking
Why don't we do a little day drinking

Don't want to wait til the sun's sinking
We could be feeling all right
I know you know what I'm thinking
Why don't we do a little day drinking

    Day Drinking
  • The first single from Little Big Town's sixth album, the song was released digitally June 3, 2014 and sent to Country radio six days later.
  • The song was penned by Little Big Town's Jimi Westbrook, Karen Fairchild and Phillip Sweet with co-writers Barry Dean and Troy Verges. Westbrook compared its vibe to enjoying a few nice cold drinks on a hot summer day. "It makes me think about those summer days when all that's on the agenda is hanging out, relaxing, and having a good time with friends," he said. "So, if that's your plan, here's your song! 'Why don't we do a little day drinking?'"
  • That rhythmic whistling you hear in the chorus happened by accident when the songwriters sat down to pen the song. "I remember that we had come from the road, because I remember being very hoarse, like really road weary voice-wise," said Karen Fairchild. "So, when we were messing with melodies on the chorus, I started singing something but I couldn't hit it, so I whistled it."

"It was out of necessity," she added. "I was whistling because I couldn't sing what I really wanted to sing. And I was actually emulating what the mando[lin] was doing. It was just this hodgepodge of like, 'Oh, that should be the chorus and the whistle's cool.'"
  • The video, directed by Declan Whitebloom (Demi Lovato, The Fray, One Direction), was shot in multiple locations in Miami and features the foursome stuck on the Old Port Bridge, day drinking and lounging on the beach, as well as performing in front of a graphic black and white graffiti wall in the Wynwood Arts District. "We had a lot of fun shooting the video," Phillip Sweet told People Country. "It captured the spirit and energy of the song."
  • Fairchild admitted to Billboard magazine that though the band felt there is something special about the song, it wasn't an instant feeling. "We didn't know it really, but with 'Day Drinking,' we had a blast that day because we were drinking and writing songs," she said. "We left it alone, then a couple of weeks later, Barry Dean and Troy Verges sent us a souped up work tape of what we had done. Then, we thought this is very fun and very cool."
  • The song featured in a commercial for Twisted Tea - Hard Iced Tea.

    Mulholland Drive Lyrics

    Mulholland Drive
  • The Never Ending is a Los Angeles sextet formed in 2013. They consist of vocalist Debby Ryan, guitarists Kyle Moore and Carman Kubanda, bassist Edwin Carranza, keyboardist Harry Allen and drummer Johnny Franco. The band was previously known as Debby and The Never Ending after their frontwoman, who is recognisable to many as the star of Disney Channel's Jessie and previously of The Suite Life on Deck.
  • This sweet and smooth ballad was released as the lead single off The Never Ending's debut EP One. It finds Ryan cautioning against losing yourself under the bright lights of stardom "The boys and I decided to share 'Mulholland Drive' as the first look into our music as The Never Ending," she told Billboard magazine. "We're all young artists in L.A., fighting every day to find our purpose without losing who we are. With any type of spotlight, the shadows get more noticeable. 'Mulholland Drive' tells the story of fighting for what's light, what's right, what's real, and what's never ending."
  • Mulholland Drive is a 21-mile road in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California and is home to some of the most exclusive and most expensive residences in the world. It is named after pioneering Los Angeles civil engineer William Mulholland.

The road is featured in numerous movies, songs, and novels, most famously serving as the title of a 2001 David Lynch neo-noir film about an aspiring actress named Betty Elms.

    1985
  • This song is about kitschy bands that reference the mid-1980's in their lyrics, sound, or appearance. It is not about anything going on with the band members at that time in their lives since they were all ten or younger.
  • The writing of this song is credited to the entire band. For main songwriter (also lead singer and drummer) Nick Stumpf, this is not his preferred style of writing songs. He says that more people means a slower process and sometimes a less pure product. (thanks to Nick Stumpf for giving us these Songfacts in an interview)

    Lighthouse
  • Sambora debuted this song at an event aimed at raising awareness about the abuse of heroin and prescription painkillers along the Jersey shore. Speaking to reporters before the event, the Bon Jovi guitarist acknowledged he once abused drugs but said he's clean now. "I got firsthand experience," he said. "I never did heroin, but obviously I did other stuff."
  • Sambora originally titled the song "Needles On The Shore" before deciding to change the name. "I wanted to do something optimistic, a beacon of light and hope," the Associated Press reports him saying. "Everyone needs that light when they're far off the shore."
  • The lyrics include:

    Those who matter don't judge
When you're swimming with the tide in the wake of a flood.

Sambora told the crowd at the event. "I'm mostly here as the father of a 16-year-old girl. I'm scared. But we can't be scared silent. Together we can make a difference because this epidemic has to stop."
  • Proceeds from the single release went toward a drug treatment facility envisioned for the region.

    Down Now
  • Written by lead singer/drummer Nick Stumpf and guitarist/keyboardist Josh Wise. They were listening to a lot of Radiohead at the time and that sound can be heard in parts of the song. Stumpf says, "tons of artists influence the group... there are too many to name."
  • Since there are several tracks of drums on the studio version of the song, Stumpf had to alter his beat in order to perform it live. This is the exception to the rule for the band since they usually try to perform songs live as close to the studio version as possible. World on Fire Lyrics

Well they say that we are tragic
And they say we're born to lose
You're the misfit, I'm the sinner,
You're the heathen, I'm the fool
But today you'll be the master or the slave,
    It's up to you
Or my beautiful disaster take me anywhere you choose

    Don't fight it, ignite it
    This much I'm sure

I think it's time to set this World on Fire
I think it's time to push it to the edge
Burn it to the ground and trip the wire
You may never be this good again

It's like a new religion speaking tongues
    come see the light
Do not trip on inhibitions that will only waste my time
Let me tempt you with the evils of the flesh and so much more
Like a Babylon redeemer, like a pusher, like a whore

Just try it, you'll like it
    I'll give you more

I think it's time to set this world on fire
I think it's time to push it to the edge
Burn it to the ground and trip the wire
You may never be this good again

    It's so dark, I can't see
    All the truth inside us
All I want is to feel something that's real before the end

    Close the door
    Turn the key
    Do you like
    What you see

    Kill the lights
    Oh come to me
    Set it off tonight
Baby just like fire on gasoline

I think it's time to set this world on fire
I think it's time to push it to the edge
I'm so fuckin' bored so trip the wire
You may never be this good again

    Just trip the wire
    This world's on fire
    Just trip the wire
You may never be this good again

    World on Fire
  • The title track of Slash's third album, this was released as the first single from the project. Asked by Blabbermouth.net why he led the album with this song, Slash replied: "I think there's a lot of singles on the record, but it's a good kick-off song. It's up-tempo, aggressive, it's a fun song. I love the whole world on fire, larger-than-life kind of vibe that the title and lyrics have."
  • Asked about the song's meaning, Slash replied: "To be literal about it, we have the global warming thing. But that's not the catalyst for the title. 'World On Fire' is more of a tongue-in-cheek, positive, fun thing — it has a lot of sexual connotations in the actual song itself. It's a euphemism for going a little bit crazy and pulling out all the stops."
  • Slash told The Pulse of Radio why he decided to title the album after this tune. "It was a song on the record basically about sex," he said. "But when I started looking for an album title, something about that title stuck out to me. I think it was because a lot of stuff has been going on - the whole thing with the Malaysian flight, and Israel, and all the stuff going on with Russia at the time. So 'World On Fire' all of a sudden had a much broader connotation."

    Sunday Night is Fair Lyrics

    Sunday Night is Fair
  • When they recorded their debut album, the group was destitute. They had no money and had been sleeping on various floors and couches. Lead singer Nick Stumpf described them as being "at the end of our rope... we had been homeless for about 9 months."
  • Nick Stumpf wrote the lyrics the day before he was supposed to recorded the vocals. It was a Sunday night, and he took a walk around Manhattan to get inspiration. The city was empty, and what Stumpf saw on his walk felt similar to the mood of the song's music. Sunday nights are also a time when he feels exhausted from the week and weekend, which also seemed to fit what became "Sunday Night is Fair."
  • This song also features a Wurlitzer, a type of electric piano. Stumpf says that many people mistake the sound of it for a guitar. (thanks to Nick Stumpf for giving us these Songfacts in an interview)
