Meanwhile Back At Mama's

This traditional-flavored duet by Tim McGraw and his wife Faith Hill was debuted during the ACM Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday April 6, 2014. The two have performed together before, taking home four ACM awards for 1997's "It's Your Love." Other hook-ups between the couple include McGraw's "I Need You" plus Hill's "Just to Hear You Say That You Love Me, " "Let's Make Love" and "Like We Never Loved at All."

The song was co-written by Tom Douglas, Jaren Johnston, and Jeffrey Steele. Other collaborations between the trio include Keith Urban's "Raise 'Em Up." "We wrote over at Steeley's place, and if I remember correctly. Tom came in with that title," Johnston recalled to Roughstock . "It was a different play on it, and I can't remember exactly how it was, but once we started working on it, it evolved into 'Meanwhile Back at Mama's.'"

"The most exciting part for me was that thing at the end," Johnson continued with a smile. "We had pretty much written the whole thing. We all knew it had to be some sort of twist on it, just because it was too good of a song to just end it normally. I sputtered out me and you back at mama's. We all kind of looked at each other and got quiet, and we were like oh my gosh, that is genius! Then we wrote that whole last chorus."

The song's music video mixes clips from McGraw and Hill's performance at the ACM Awards with footage of the couple in a relaxed setting on their family farm just outside of Nashville.

Speaking with Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex, McGraw said the song instantly drew him in. "Singers come and go, careers come and go, but the songs last forever," he said. "You really have to focus on the songs, and when I heard this song instantly I loved it."

"I mean within the four measures, I knew I was going to record this song," McGraw continued. "The second time I heard it, I played it for Faith and she instantly loved it too, and I asked her if she'd sing it with me, and she said she would."

"The cadence of the songs, the cadence of the lyrics … I knew I had a good idea where it was going to head when I heard it," the country star added. "I knew it was gonna be real nostalgic and it was gonna be like a warm blanket and I knew I wanted to record it."

Tim McGraw had a less-than-ideal childhood, growing up believing his stepfather, Horace Smith, was his father until discovering at the age of 11 that his biological father was in fact baseball player Tug McGraw. Asked by Taste of Country how someone with such a background could relate to a story that relies on the familiar comforts of home, McGraw replied: "Either you have a memory or a connection to that bucolic, sort of idealized childhood, or home that you grew up in or you wanna have it."

This won Song of the Year Award at the 2015 Taste of Country Awards. It was McGraw's second straight win at the ceremony as "Highway Don't Care" was victorious in 2014.

The song wasn't written as a duet. "We just wrote a folky thing," Jaren Johnston, recalled to Radio.com of the tune. "[Big Machine Label Group President] Scott Borchetta said, 'You know it's going to be a duet, right?'" And I was like, 'Who are they going to get?' I had no idea. He's like, 'Faith's going to sing on it.' I was like, 'Score! Touchdown!'"

McGraw knew right away that it was the perfect song to record with his wife. "I got home, I walked into the house, and I said, 'Faith, you've got to hear this song,'" the singer said. "So I played her the song, and when it got to the end and it said, 'Me and you back at Mama's,' a flood of tears just came down from her eyes."

"I said, 'Not only am I going to cut, but you're going to sing it with me,'"McGraw added. "And that's how it was born, right there."

Lionel Bart wrote this song for a commercial advertising the Abbey National Building Society as part of their "Abbey Endings" (a play on "Happy Endings") campaign. Bart appeared in the spot, playing piano and singing along with a group of children. The commercial was so popular that the song was released as a single, becoming Bart's last popular song released during his lifetime. Copyright EMI Records Ltd and running to a mere 2 minutes 35 seconds, it was unusually recorded by the composer himself, with his very young co-performers.

Bart was a revered British composer whose plays included La Strada and Oliver!. Known also for his eccentricities and lavish parties, he died of liver cancer in 1999 at age 68. In 2013, his unfinished musical Quasimodo was completed and performed in London 14 years after his death.

Lonesome Valley 2003

Carter penned this song about the pain she felt after losing her mother June and her mother's husband Johnny Cash in the same year: 2003. Carlene explains in the song that after June passed away, Johnny lost his will to live:

This was inspired by Roy Harper, a friend of the band and lead singer on Pink Floyd's "Have A Cigar." The specific inspiration was an incident where Harper trashed his caravan at the 1975 Knebworth festival. (thanks, Jim - Birmingham, England)

The throwaway phrase "yep yep" is dropped seven times into this song. The hook was a late addition when Cary Barlowe ("American Honey") visited East Nashville on June 25, 2013, for a writing appointment with Zach Crowell ("See You Tonight") and Matt Jenkins ("Cop Car").

When Barlowe arrived the other two had already started a song arising from a comment that Crowell has made. "I can't remember what I was talking about — maybe a pizza place, and I said, 'Ooh, that pizza place, that's where it's at, right there,'" Crowell recounted to Billboard magazine. "I recall Matt going, 'That's the title — 'Where It's At.' Probably two seconds later Cary walked in the door."

The trio proceeded to write lyrics about how the right woman is such an important part of a well-lived life. "We tried to make it light and fun," said Jenkins. "It's not rocket science, certainly. It's just feel-good, and you want to crank it up and jam it."

Within less than three hours, they were close to finishing the song, but had a phrase in the chorus — "Dressed up, hair down, in a ball cap. As long as I get that" — that had a gap in the middle that needed to be filled, so Crowell suggested the "yep, yep" part. "I probably thought it was bad," he said. "I probably pitched it in a very unconfident kind of way, but they thought it was good."

Lynch told Radio.com the song is the perfect tune to celebrate warm weather fun. "The first time I heard it, it's infectious," he said. "The guitar licks are like ear worms, they stay in your head forever. I just thought, 'What a perfect summertime song.'"

"It's about the simple things in life. It's about the easy," he continued. "It's not glam. It's a girl that's chillin' out in her pajamas. There's nothing better than that, than being with somebody in the comfort of your own home."

Lynch titled his second album after this song. "It's where I am, as a person and an artist," he told Rolling Stone Country. "All the songs on the record are moments I've captured and put down. They were inspired by my excitement for life. So [the album title] 'Where It's At' sounds pretty perfect."

The song was written early in the process of making the Where It's At album. Dustin Lynch admitted to Rolling Stone Country that originally, it wasn't in the running to be the leadoff track. "In the making of an album when we're writing songs and listening for months and months, sometimes the stuff that comes in first you get tired of. We didn't think it was a single," he explained. "Something magical happened with the guitars when we recorded it. Here's a song that took me a while to even consider it in the game, and now I'm the one championing it to be the first single. It was like the Cinderella story of the album."
