Wannabe Lyrics

Ha ha ha ha ha
Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah

If you want my future, forget my past
If you wanna get with me, better make it fast
Now don't go wasting my precious time
Get your act together we could be just fine

I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah
If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

Oh, what do you think about that
Now you know how I feel
Say, you can handle my love, are you for real
(Are you for real)
I won't be hasty, I'll give you a try
If you really bug me then I'll say goodbye

Yo I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
(You've got to give)
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

So, here's a story from A to Z
You wanna get with me, you gotta listen carefully
We got Em in the place who likes it in your face
You got G like MC who likes it on a...
Easy V doesn't come for free, she's a real lady
And as for me, ha you'll see

Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and wind it all around

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
(You've got to give)
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

If you wanna be my lover
You gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta
Slam, slam, slam, slam (make it last forever)

Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and wind it all around
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and zigazig ah
If you wanna be my lover

Wannabe
  • This was the Spice Girls first single. It was a huge and immediate hit, as their message of "Girl Power" and quirky personalities went along with the catchy beat and intrigued audiences around the world.

The song was written by Richard "Biff" Stannard and his musical collaborator Matt Rowe with assistance from the group members, who all received writers credits. Stannard had written the song "Steam" for a boy band called East 17, and after a chance encounter with Mel B., he was invited to write some songs for the Spice Girls, which was honing their act. Over the course of 10 days, he and Rowe wrote both "Wannabe" and the group's eventual third single, "2 Become 1." Stannard said that pretty much every waking hour of those 10 days was spent working on the songs; he explained to Pink News: "We wrote 'Wannabe' quite quickly, but it took ages to get it to sound right. I remember waking up on the studio floor with this post-it from Matt saying, 'Press play.' We'd finally got it. So it was luck and hard work."
  • The Spice Girls were formed as a female alternative to boy bands, which were big at the time in the UK. They spent years developing their act and cultivating their image; by the time this song was released, they had already made many media appearances and were ready for the big time.

When "Wannabe" was released in the UK on July 8, 1996, it blew past even the loftiest of expectations, reaching #1 on July 27, where it stayed for seven weeks. Global domination followed - in January 1997 the song was released in the US and in February it went to #1. It topped the charts in at least 10 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
  • Worldwide, this is the best-selling single by an all-female group.
  • The lyrics are about the value of friendship. The five Spice Girls helped come up with the words and craft the song. Regarding their contribution, Richard Stannard said: "There were seven of us sitting on the floor in this tiny room. Matt Rowe and I would add the backing track and start with rhythms; everyone had their role; Geri was always concentrating on the theme and all the others would chip in with melodies and lyrics."

Talking about how they created the mood of the song, Stannard said, "It was the madness in the room. There would be two or three things going on at once; we would have three or four mikes up and we would record everything then pick the bits we liked and play it back to them."
  • A "Wannabe" is a person who aspires to be someone else, generally a celebrity, and imitates that person. The phrase has very little to do with the song, but makes a catchy title. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The video was done by the Swedish director Johan Camitz, who was known for his work on commercials. It was shot at St. Pancras Midland Grand Hotel in London, where the girls are seen larking about and making scene. The video appeared to be one continuous shot, although there are two barely noticeable edits. The action was mostly spontaneous, as the girls were presented as individuals rather than a choreographed unit.

Before the song was officially released in the UK, the video aired on the cable network The Box, where it quickly became their most popular clip, setting the stage for a successful release.
  • In February of 1997, this song won a Brit Award for Best Song. In addition, their follow-up hit, "Say You'll Be There," won for Best Video.
  • The line "Friendship never ends" became a credo for the Spice Girls. They used the phrase in a press release when Ginger Spice left the group.
  • The Spice Girls were managed by Simon Fuller, who created American Idol. When his protégé Simon Cowell launched the TV show X Factor In 2011, he hired Richard Stannard, who wrote this song, as a writer/producer for acts on the show.
  • On April 12, 1997, the Spice Girls performed this song and "Say You'll Be There" on Saturday Night Live. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • The big finish in the movie Grease, where John Travolta breaks out some great dance moves in a party carnival setting, was an inspiration for this song. Stannard says they were talking about that scene when they started to write the song, and they built on that vibe with Matt Rowe adding chords to a beat Stannard had on an MPC drum machine.
  • The "Zig A Zag Ahhhh" line was a big attention grabber in this song, and many listeners speculated that it was a bit dirty, as in shorthand for "suck a d--k." Stannard claims it's a nonsense phrase they had been throwing around when they wrote the song, and that it's purely innocent.
  • This was named the catchiest ever hit single in a 2014 UK scientific study by Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. The result came from an online survey, which asked 12,000 people to name a song as soon as they recognized it. They were chosen at random from more than 1,000 clips of best-selling tunes with participants averaging around five seconds to clock a track.

The Spice Girls' earworm was named in an average of 2.29 seconds, ahead of Lou Bega's "Mambo No 5 (A Little Bit Of)," which was recognized an average of 2.48 seconds. Survivor came third with "Eye of the Tiger" at 2.62 seconds.

    Out Among the Stars Lyrics

It's midnight at a liquor store in Texas
Closing time another day is done
When a boy walked in the door and points a pistol
He can't find a job, but Lord, he's found a gun

He pulls it off with no trace of confrontation
Then he lets the old man run out in the street
Even though he knows they'll come with guns a blazing
Already he can feel a great relief

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles Out Among the Stars?

He pictures the arrival of the cruisers
Sees that old familiar anger in their eyes
He knows that when they're shooting at this loser
They'll be aiming at the demons in their lives

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles out among the stars?

The evening news carries all the details
He dies in every living room in town
And in his own a bottle's thrown in anger
And his father cries, he'll never live this down

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles out among the stars
And fly like eagles out among the stars

    Out Among the Stars
  • In the mid 1980s Columbia Records dropped Johnny Cash from the only label he'd worked for since 1960. Thirty years later, Johnny Carter Cash found among a huge stash of his father and mother June Carter's effects, recordings of some lost 1980s sessions which had been shelved by the record company. A posthumous album containing some of these previously unreleased songs was made available by Legacy Recordings on March 25, 2014.
  • This Adam Mitchell penned story song is the title track of the collection. The track tells of a struggling man who holds up a liquor store. Carter Cash told The Guardian: "The song itself deals with a sadness, it deals with a loss and it's something that we can relate to in our modern society itself."
  • Adam Mitchell is a Scottish born Canadian-raised singer-songwriter, whose resume includes Olivia Newton-John's "Dancing Round and Round", John Waite's "Tears" and Kiss' "Crazy Crazy Nights."
  • Why was the album titled after this song? Carter Cash explained to Billboard magazine: "Originally this body of work was completely untitled. After the fact, we looked at it to figure out what song would make a great statement. This was a song about sadness and tragedy in a person's life who's walking away from facing of a bitter end. There's a great depth of understanding there. But you know, I think being transferred in the title, I think it takes the listener to another place, like perhaps my dad's music spirit lies outs among the stars. It's definitely in our hearts also."

    When We Was Fab Lyrics

Back then long time ago when grass was green
    Woke up in a daze
Arrived like strangers in the night
Fab, long time ago When We Was Fab
Fab, back when income tax was all we had

Caresses fleeced you in the morning light
    Casualties at dawn
    And we did it all
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, you are my world you are my only love

And while you're in this world
The fuzz gonna come and claim you
    But you mo better wise
When the buzz gonna come and take you away
    Take you away
    Take you away

The microscopes that magnified the tears
    Studied warts and all
Still the life flows on and on
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, but It's All Over Now Baby Blue
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, like this pullover you sent to me

    Fab
And You've Really Got A Hold On Me
Fab, long time ago when we was fab

    When We Was Fab
  • Harrison wrote this after the Beatles had split up. It's about the days of Beatlemania, when the group was known as "The Fab 4." It sounds very much like a Beatles song. (thanks, Catherine - Glasgow, England)
  • Jeff Lynne, George's bandmate from the superstar band The Traveling Wilburys and leader of The Electric Light Orchestra, produced this song and as well as the rest of this album. A huge Beatles fan, Jeff also appears briefly in the video for this song (look for the big afro). (thanks, Robert - Berkeley, CA)
  • Ringo Starr played drums on this track and a few others on the album. Harrison says that when he started writing the song, he had Ringo's drumming in mind for the intro and the overall tempo.
  • Harrison states in this song: "income tax was all we had." Excessive taxation was a scourge for him - he wrote the Beatles song "Taxman" on the subject.
  • Gary Wright, who had a big hit with "Dream Weaver," played piano on this track.

I Drove Her Out Of My Mind Lyrics

She gave me my walking papers
And ran off with someone new
    'Cause he bought her things
    My wages couldn't buy
So I turned to ups and downers
    And everything between
Still I can't get her good lovin'
    Off my mind

Well today I bought a Cadillac
    The kind she's always wanted
    I called and asked her
    If she'd like to ride
She said this is our last date
I said that's alright with me
    Cause tonight I'm driving her
    Out of my mind

Yeah I'll take her on a scenic cruise
    Right off of Lookout Mountain
'Cause she said I never took her out
    When she was mine
    She'll see all seven states
As we drive to the pearly gates
    Tonight when I drive her
    Out of my mind

All the papers will read "Lovers leap
    Again off Lookout Mountain"
    'Cause I wrote a note
    That called it suicide
    But my epitaph will say
    "he killed his pain yesterday
When he finally drove that woman
    Off his mind"

Well now here she comes to greet me
Dressed to kill and so am I
Hope she asks me if this
    Cadillac will fly
And I know that I'll die laughin'
When I show her that it will
    When I drive that woman
    Right out of my mind

Hell I'll take her on a scenic cruise
    Right off of Lookout Mountain
'Cause she said I never took her out
    When she was mine
    She'll see all seven states
As we drive to the pearly gates
    Tonight when I drive her
    Out of my mind

They'll say Johnny Cash was quite a smash
    Down here in Chatanooga
Last night when he drove her
    Out of his mind

Yeah that Cadillac dealer's in for a big surprise too
    99 dollars down, 99 dollars a month
Yeah it's gonna be just gorgeous

    (Ooh to the pearly gates)

    Toxic Lyrics

    Baby, can't you see
    I'm calling
A guy like you should wear a warning
    It's dangerous
    I'm falling

    There's no escape
    I can't wait
    I need a hit
    Baby, give me it
    You're dangerous
    I'm loving it

    Too high
    Can't come down
    Losin' my head
    Spinnin' 'round and 'round
    Do you feel me now?

    Oh,
    The taste of your lips
    I'm on a ride
    You're Toxic I'm slippin' under
With a taste of a poison paradise

    I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're toxic?
And I love what you do
Don't you know that you're toxic?

    It's getting late
    To give you up
    I took a sip
    From my devil's cup
    Slowly, it's taking over me

    Too high
    Can't come down
It's in the air and it's all around
    Can you feel me now?

    Oh,
    Taste of your lips
    I'm on a ride
    You're toxic I'm slippin' under
With the taste of a poison paradise

    I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're toxic?
And I love what you do
Don't you know that you're toxic?
Don't you know that you're toxic?

    (Oh, oh)

    Taste of your lips
    I'm on a ride
    You're toxic I'm slippin' under
With a taste of a poison paradise

    I'm addicted to you
Don't you know that you're toxic?

    Toxic
  • English songwriter Cathy Dennis wrote this in 2003 with Britney Spears in mind. Dennis was the female voice of the group D-Mob, who had a hit in 1990 with "C'mon And Get My Love." She had some other hits as a solo artist, including "Too Many Walls" and "Just Another Dream," before writing songs for other artists. She wrote Kylie Minogue's 2002 hit "Can't Get You Out Of My Head."
  • The video was released around the same time Janet Jackson flashed her boob at the Super Bowl. The uproar over indecent material caused MTV to banish the "Toxic" clip, and a few other highly sexual videos, to late-night rotation.

In the Joseph Kahn-directed video, Spears is shown in a provocative pose wearing a flesh-colored body suit. Kahn also directed the clips for Spears' "Stronger" and "Womanizer."
  • This won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. It was Spears' first Grammy.
  • This was produced by the Swedish production duo Bloodshy & Avant (Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg), and the pair received writing credit on the song as well. They also worked on Spears' 2007 track "Piece Of Me."
  • Spears' previous Top 10 hit was "Oops... I Did It Again" in 2000. While she did rack up some minor hits, her commercial success was fading a bit. This song, with its memorable high-pitched hook, brought her back to the Top 10 and gave her career a nice boost. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • There have been some very interesting and unusual cover versions of this song. The French-Israeli folk-pop artist Yael Naim recorded it, as did the alternative group Local H. A Static Lullaby recorded a Punk version on their 2008 album Rattlesnake!.

The singer-songwriter interview with Jayme Dee got a lot of attention with her acoustic cover that she posted on YouTube. Dee has covered many popular songs in this style which routinely get over 100,000 views, but she tells us that "Toxic" is the one she most connected with. Said Dee: "It's so different than the original version. I wanted to make the song a little more sultry and less obtrusive, so I pulled out my acoustic and went for a more bluesy vibe. It was fun!"
  • Spears told MTV News in 2003: "It's basically about a girl addicted to a guy. "I really like 'Toxic.' It's an upbeat song. It's really different, that's why I like it so much. This villain girl, she'll do anything to get what she wants. She goes through different obstacles."
  • For the video, Britney appears to be a flight attendant, but she's actually a secret agent in disguise. Director Joseph Kahn told MTV News: "The plot is pretty nonsensical. It's just fun. James Bond flicks and sex."
  • The song was originally offered to Kylie Minogue, but she rejected it.
  • Jay-Z revealed during a Twitter Q&A that this is his favorite Britney song. "Jamming my G," he remarked. Britney responded by tweeting: "You learn something every day! Never knew @S_C_ was a fan of Toxic! That's Big Pimpin."
  • This was used on the TV series Chuck in the 2007 episode "Chuck Versus the Truth."

    It seems like yesterday
    I heard people say
Son you were born a stray, someday you'll settle down
    I guess there'll come a time
    Maybe I'll tow the line
    Right now I'm doing fine
    Rollin' from town to town

    I don't care where I ride
    I'll my feet decide
Do anything but don't ask that I
Hang up my Rock and Roll Shoes
Hang up my rock and roll shoes

    Guitars and ringin' tones
Are in my blood and in my bones
Show me a bus and I'll call it home
    I don't wanna change

    I don't care where I ride
    I'll my feet decide
Do anything but don't ask that I
Hang up my rock and roll shoes
Hang up my rock and roll shoes

    Oh the lonely day
When they put me in my grave
There ain't a word you need to say just
Hang up my rock and roll shoes
Hang up my rock and roll shoes

    So let that moulder run
    Headed out towards the sun
I'm in the mood for movin' on
    I'll be back some day

    I don't care where I ride
    I'll my feet decide

    Rock and Roll Shoes
  • This is one of a number of recordings that Johnny Cash made in the early 1980s with producer Billy Sherrill that were discovered by his son John Carter Cash in 2012. Carter Cash commented to The Guardian: "Rock and Roll Shoes brings back to me an energy that my dad had in the early 1980s that is true and strong. It makes me remember my father laughing and, of course, it reminds me of the years he spent in the early part of his career; the great creativity, the spirit of love and music that he had and it stayed with him through it all. I love Rock and Roll Shoes. What a fun song."

    One humanoid escapee
    One android on the run
Seeking freedom beneath the lonely desert sun

    Trying to change its program
Trying to change the mode, crack the code
    Images conflicting into data overload

One zero zero one zero zero one
    SOS
One zero zero one zero zero one

One zero zero one zero zero

    Memory banks unloading
    Bytes break into bits
Unit One's in trouble and it's scared out of its wits

    Guidance systems break down
    A struggle to exist
    To resist
A pulse of dying power in a clenching plastic fist

One zero zero one zero zero one
    SOS
One zero zero one zero zero one
    In distress

    The Body Electric
  • This is based on Twilight Zone episode #100 - "I Sing the Body Electric." The episode originally aired in 1962. It's about a family who orders a robot "Grandmother" after the death of their young mother. Written by Ray Bradbury, the name came from a Walt Whitman poem. The story was later included in a short stories collection with the same title in 1969.
  • Some believe the song was inspired by the movie THX 1138, one of the first films made by Star Wars creator George Lucas. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)
  • The song describes a robot who struggles to break free of the hegemony of the robots' social structure. The chorus repeats several times:
    one-zero-zero-one-zero-zero-one SOS
    one-zero-zero-one-zero-zero-one In Distress
1001001 is ASCII code for the letter 'I.' This could indicate the robot's motivation for escape - it's attainment of self-awareness. (thanks, Michael - Torrance, CA)

    Neon Love Lyrics

Dropped the call, drop my phone
    All alone I'm with you
    Had enough, sobered up
    Nothing left to cling to

Funny how the stars always seem to shine
Shine the brightest right before they fall
Funny how your touch used to burn me up
Now I'm not feeling anything at all

I never noticed how hot it is under these lights
This Neon Love is burning too bright
Baby, sometimes it's hard enough just getting by
This neon love is making us blind
Funny how the lows overshine the highs
If we fade at least we know we tried
Should have known from start of it, baby don't cry
This neon love is destined to die

    Salty lips, drunken kiss
Used to think I need this
Had the moon, but wanted you
    It'll all be done soon

Funny how the stars always seem to shine
Shine the brightest right before they fall
Funny how your touch used to burn me up
Now I'm not feeling anything at all

I never noticed how hot it is under these lights
This neon love is burning too bright
Baby, sometimes it's hard enough just getting by

Should have known from start of it, baby don't cry
This neon love is destined to die

What's the use, tell the truth
    I'll be fine without you

I never noticed how hot it is under these lights
This neon love is burning too bright
Baby, sometimes it's hard enough just getting by
This neon love is making us blind
Funny how the lows overshine the highs
If we fade at least we know we tried
Should have known from start of it, baby don't cry
This neon love is destined to die

    Neon Love
  • Karmin's Amy Heidemann explained the song's meaning to Artist Direct : "That song's really sad. It's pretty exhausting emotionally, I would say, especially performing it live. People think it's about a relationship. You can definitely interpret it that way, but it's sort of a metaphor for our career and experience in the music industry."

She added: "People were saying it sounds like an eighties power ballad, which we love. We call it a "mid" like a mid-tempo. Everything is in there from acoustic guitars to actual neon lights buzzing out. We found a sample of neon lights buzzing out. Those are in there."

    Bruce's Philosophers Song Lyrics

Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
    Who was very rarely stable
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
Who could think you under the table

    David Hume could out-consume
    Schopenhauer and Hegel
And Wittgenstein was a beery swine
Who was just as sloshed as Schlegel

There's nothing Nietzche couldn't teach ya
'Bout the raising of the wrist
    Socrates, himself, was permanently pissed

John Stuart Mill, of his own free will
On half a pint of shandy was particularly ill
Plato, they say, could stick it away
Half a crate of whiskey every day

Aristotle, Aristotle was a bugger for the bottle
Hobbes was fond of his dram
And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart
    "I drink, therefore I am"

Yes, Socrates, himself, is particularly missed
    A lovely little thinker
But a bugger when he's pissed

    Bruce's Philosophers Song
  • This is a comedy song about how most Western philosophies were formed. It asserts that most of the people who came up with these philosophies were drunk.
  • Eric Idle wrote this and sang lead. Most of the group's fans feel that Idle was the best vocalist of the group. (thanks, Jeff - Haltom City, TX, for above 2)

    I Give Myself Away Lyrics

    I Give Myself Away
  • This Gospel number was written by worship leader William McDowell, who serves as the lead pastor at Deeper Fellowship Church in Orlando, Florida. McDowell's original version can be heard on his 2009 As We Worship Live album.
  • Oldfield covered the tune for the final track of his Man on the Rocks album. He explained to HMV.com : "You know, I just heard that song by complete accident actually, but I sometimes find that, if I like a song, I want to get involved with it and I just decided to make my own version of it."

"It wasn't originally going to be on the album, we'd settled on ten tracks, but Stephen (Lipson, co-producer) liked what I'd done with it," he added. "I changed some of the lyrics to make it better represent everyday life, as opposed to being a song of worship that belongs in a church."

    I Miss You Lyrics

    (I Miss You miss you)

Hello there the angel from my nightmare
The shadow in the background of the morgue
The unsuspecting victim of darkness in the valley
We can live like Jack and Sally if we want
Where you can always find me
And we'll have Halloween on Christmas
And in the night we'll wish this never ends
    We'll wish this never ends

(I miss you I miss you)
(I miss you I miss you)

Where are you and I'm so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
    I need somebody and always
    This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stared I counted
The Webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
    Like indecision to call you
and hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop the pain tonight
    Stop this pain tonight

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)
Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you miss you)

    I Miss You
  • This is a rare acoustic song by blink 182. Drummer Travis Barker used Jazz brushes to create the scratching sound throughout the song. He can be seen playing with them in the video. (thanks, Glenn - Sydney, Australia)
  • Tom DeLonge: "I'm a really big Cure fan, and one day I was listening to their song called 'Love Cats', and I loved the idea of using a stand up bass guitar [actually a double bass. It's a viola and not a member of the guitar family. Same for the normal bass 'guitar'. That's just a double bass turned on its side with frets, and shaped like a guitar] and jazz brushes. So what we ended up doing was writing a song with all acoustic."
  • Travis Barker: "The part in the first verse about Jack and Sally I directed towards me and [my wife] Shanna." (thanks, Arkady - London, England, for above 2)
  • The lyrics in the introduction are a reference to the movie The Nightmare Before Christmas - "We can Live like Jack and Sally if we want... and have Halloween on Christmas." (thanks, Jeffrey - Victoria, Canada)
  • Blink-182 played this song with electric guitars at their live shows in support of the album. (thanks, Bryant - Salina, KS)
  • Tom DeLonge often plays this at shows with his band Angels & Airwaves. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

    Money Lyrics

    Money
  • This song finds Harry Koisser asking, "Money, do you need it?" while referencing the digital currency bitcoin. He told NME about the citation of the fashionable peer-to-peer payment system: "I wasn't searching for a relevant reference," Koisser said. "It just came out when I was writing. I wasn't like, 'Oh, I gotta write about something current,' otherwise I would talk about horsemeat. Which isn't on the album, unfortunately."
  • Harry Koisser was determined not to write a love song or a song about himself, which is when the money theme struck him. "I realized I wasn't born into it, and I still don't have it," he said. "As a song it just seemed to work. It's not negative, bitter or whiney."
  • The song was debuted live at the band's Shepherd's Bush Empire shows in December 2013.
  • The music video was directed by Ninian Doff, with the band making a cameo as Wall Street bankers.
  • Harry Koisser came up with the track while the band was on tour in Australia. Working with Logic Pro software, he started with a drum loop, then added some chords. He then called up the virtual keyboard on the program and mashed his hands on it, which created a surprisingly interesting sound.
  • The band recorded this song at SARM Studios in London in what was going to be a rehearsal of the song. When their producer, Jim Abiss, heard them working on it, he had them record the drums. This went well, so they kept going and recorded the whole song. This was a nice treat for the record label, who got the song ahead of schedule and decided it should be the first single.
  • This was the first song Peace recorded for Happy People. The lyrical content was inspired by their surroundings when they were touring America. "I had an English teacher who used to bang on about the American Dream the time - Death of a Salesman and all that - then you realize when you're in the US what it's all about," Koisser explained to NME. "I'm not, like 'Money's evil' but it causes a lot of problems."
