Above Me Lyrics

Above Me
  • This is about thinking that someone is so amazing, that no matter where you go, and through out all of the years in your life, you will never find someone as perfect as that person. "When I look at the stars, they shine of your eyes. The sky it burns bright with your presence tonight. But you're so above me and I cannot fly to the angel above me I long to be with," Means that person is so amazing that you don't deserve them. (thanks, Lisa - Palatine, IL)

"'Intro', the game show thing, the idea cropped up when we were mixing down, the recording supposedly finished," Posdnuos explained to Melody Maker."I don't even remember how that track with all the whispering on it came about. I guess we were just buggin' out, started the tape rolling and there it was."

    And now

    Promise your love

    Colour My World
  • This was written by Chicago's trombone player, James Pankow, and sung by Terry Kath. After Kath's death in 1978, the band did not play the song for several years, eventually bringing It back with Bill Champlin on vocals. The song remained a concert favorite, and was later sung live by Robert Lamm sings it now.
  • In our interview with James Pankow , he explained: "I titled it 'Colour My World' because it affected a lyric that again mirrors the emotion of love. In this case, I used the emotion of love and description as a technicolor movie that takes places in my heart. It colors, it gives color and vivid definition to my life, like bringing this emotion to it."
  • On The Chris Isaak Hour, Pankow explained: "It's a small segment of a multi-movement piece on our second album which is basically a tribute to my first love. I had been listening to Bach - the Brandenburg Concertos, and they had all those arpeggiated melodies. I sat at a piano and started messing around with these arpeggios. That cycle of arpeggios became the foundation of the song.

Frank Sinatra called our publicist and said, 'Ask that kid to write another verse for that song.' I thought about it, I called him back and said I can't do it - it's like sewing another arm on your kid, I can't do it."
  • Walter Parazaider, who was primarily a sax player in the band, played the flute on this track.
  • One of the band's most popular songs, "Colour My World" never charted because it wasn't released as a single. It was used as the B-side of the "Make Me Smile" in April 1970, and as the B-side of "Beginnings" in June 1971.

Please listen to this simple De La style I'm gonna sing
It's strongly directed to all the misery you're bringing
Now I'm not all about dissing someone else personnel
But there's no quota on your odor
    That's right, you smell
Now you might feel a little embarassed, don't take it too hard
And don't make it worse by covering it up with some Right Guard
Before you even put on your silk shirt and fat gold rope
Please take your big ass to the bathroom
    And please use

    Take The Power Back Lyrics

In the right light, study becomes insight
But the system that dissed us
Teaches us to read and right
    So called facts are fraud
They want us to allege and pledge
And bow down to their God
Lost the culture, the culture lost
Spun our minds and through time
    Ignorance has taken over
Yo, we gotta Take The Power Back!
    Bam! Here's the plan
    Motherfuck Uncle Sam
Step back, I know who I am
Raise up your ear, I'll drop the style and clear
It's the beats and the lyrics they fear
    The rage is relentless
We need a movement with a quickness
You are the witness of change
    And to counteract
We gotta take the power back

Yeah, we gotta take the power back
    Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back

    The present curriculum
I put my fist in 'em
Eurocentric every last one of 'em
See right through the red, white and blue disguise
With lecture I puncture the structure of lies
Installed in our minds and attempting
    To hold us back
We've got to take it back
Holes in our spirit causin' tears and fears
One-sided stories for years and years and years
    I'm inferior? Who's inferior?
Yeah, we need to check the interior
Of the system that cares about only one culture
    And that is why
We gotta take the power back

Yeah, we gotta take the power back
    Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back

Hey yo check, we're gonna have to break it, break it,
    break it down
    Aw shit!
    Ugh!
    And like this Ugh!
Come on, yeah! Bring it back the other way!

The teacher stands in front of the class
But the lesson plan he can't recall
The student's eyes don't perceive the lies
    Bouncing off every fucking wall
    His composure is well kept
I guess he fears playing the fool
The complacent students sit and listen to some of that
Bullshit that he learned in school
Europe ain't my rope to swing on
Can't learn a thing from it
    Yet we hang from it
Gotta get it, gotta get it together then
    Like the motherfuckin' weathermen
To expose and close the doors on those who try
To strangle and mangle the truth
'Cause the circle of hatred continues unless we react
We gotta take the power back

Yeah, we gotta take the power back
    Come on, come on!
We gotta take the power back

    No more lies
    Ugh!
    Yeah!

    Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!
    Take it back y'all
Take it back, a-take it back
A-take it back y'all, come on!

    Ugh!
    Yeah!

  • This is about forced ideals in the US - how the American government wants their citizens to conform to the "ideal" American dream. If you don't agree with their opinions, you could be considered a terrorist. (thanks, liam - frederick, MD)
  • At some live shows, lead singer Zack De La Rocha would intro this by saying, "The classroom is the last place to find the truth." (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA)
  • This song makes a reference to the Weathermen, a radical militant organization active during the 1970s, whose stated goal was the violent overthrow of the United States government. (thanks, Bob - Tokyo, Japan)

    Potholes in My Lawn Lyrics

(Yo, something's wrong here, no, not again!)
    (Get the daisies for the)

    Potholes in My Lawn

    Everybody's sayin'
What to do when suckin' lunatics start diggin' and chewin'
They don't know that the Soul don't go for that
    Potholes in my lawn
And that goes for my rhyme sheet
Which I concentrated so hard on, see
I don't ask for maximum security
    But my dwellin' is swellin'
It nipped my bud when I happened to fall
    Into a spot
Where no ink or an ink-blot
    Was on a scroll
I just wrote me a new 'mot'
    But now it's gone
    There's no
    Suckers knew that I hate
To recognise that every time I'm writin'
    It's gone

    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-a)
    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-ee-hee-hee-hee)

    Potholes in my lawn

I've found that it's not wise
    To leave my garden untended
Cause eyes have now pardoned all laws of privacy
Even paws are after my writer
See, I've found that everyone's sayin'
What to do when suckers are preyin'
    On my well-guarded spreadsheets
Oh why, hell does it send up fleets
Of evil-doers through the big hole
To get to evil-doers who dig holes
Which leaves my lawn with lawn-chew
I think I'd better plant traces to give clues
    Or better yet call 911
And when they get here I inform them I'm the Plug One
Open a chair and let them realize the reason
    For concern of the Soul
Cause we've come down with a case of potholes

    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-a)
    (Yodel-a-hee, Yodel-oh-hee, Yodel-ee-hee-hee-hee)

    Potholes in my lawn

(Who stole, who stole, who stole the cookie
    From the cookie jar?)

    Now you got the message
What to do when you die
The death that I predict in 'Plug Tunin'
It's a shame that you deny to claim
That you stole my words of fame
That I wrote in my rhyme sheet
Which I concentrated so hard on, see
    I don't ask for a barbed wire fence, B
    But my dwellin' is swellin'
It nipped my bud when I happened to fall
    Into a spot
Where no ink or an ink-blot
    Was on a scroll
I just wrote me a new 'mot'
But now it's gone there's no
    Suckers knew that I hate
To recoginse that every time I'm writin'

    Potholes in My Lawn
  • The second single released by De La Soul, "Potholes in My Lawn" was their first song to chart, reaching #22 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles.
  • The song is about other rappers thieving De La Soul's rhymes. Trugoy told Rolling Stone: "'Potholes in my Lawn' was like another way to say beat-biter or sucker MC, like songs from Run-DMC, songs from MC Lyte. The lawn was our rhymes and the potholes were the pieces missing."
  • This samples Eric Burdon & War's 1976 song "Magic Mountain" as well as the yodeling and Jew's Harp on Parliament's 1970 track "Little Ole Country Boy."
  • This became the first ever hip-hop song played on Mars when NASA's Opportunity Rover broadcast it in 2004.

    Little Deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got
    Little deuce Coupe
You don't know what I got

Well I'm not braggin' babe so don't put me down
But I've got the fastest set of wheels in town
When something comes up to me he don't even try
Cause if I had a set of wings man I know she could fly
    She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
    (My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill
But she'll walk a Thunderbird like (she's) it's standin' still
She's ported and relieved and she's stroked and bored.
She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored
    She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
    (My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)

She's got a competition clutch with the four on the floor
And she purrs like a kitten till the lake pipes roar
And if that ain't enough to make you flip your lid
There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy

And comin' off the line when the light turns green
Well she blows 'em outta the water like you never seen
I get pushed out of shape and it's hard to steer
When I get rubber in all four gears

    She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got
    (My little deuce coupe)
(You don't know what I got)
    She's my little deuce coupe
You don't know what I got

    Little Deuce Coupe
  • This is one of the street drag-racing tales that were popular in mid 1960s in Southern California. The lyrics make more sense if you're into cars. The mechanical parts mentioned are all actual automotive parts or technology, including the "flat head mill" (engine) and the "lake pipes" (which are long chromed exhaust pipes that run along the rocker panel). One artistic stretch is the vision of an old Ford Model A reaching 140 mph - the shape has too much air drag to reach that speed, unless you tow it behind a DC-10 jet. (thanks, Chris - Thornhurst, PA)
  • A deuce is a car produced by Ford in 1932 (the "2" in 1932 is the "deuce"). Most of them had big V8 engines and were popular for drag racing. They weren't just coupes - they also came as roadsters and sedans. Here's a visual and more info on the Little Deuce Coupe .
  • This was the first song Brian Wilson wrote with Roger Christian, who was a California DJ with an affinity for cars. Wilson was a wizard in the studio and very good with composition, but when it came to writing lyrics that would appeal to the youth of America, he needed some help. Roger Christian, and also Wilson's early writing partner Gary Usher, gave him an insight into the California culture of surfing and cars that helped make the songs authentic. Roger Christian went on to write more car-inspired Beach Boys songs, including "Car Crazy Cutie" and "Cherry, Cherry Coupe," and he also helped write "Dead Man's Curve" for Jan & Dean.
  • Mike Love sang lead on this track.
  • The line at the end of the song, "There's one more thing, I got the pink slip daddy," means that the singer won a race with his Little Deuce Coupe, earning him his opponent's car. The "pink slip" is the vehicle's registration, so "racing for pink slips" means the winner gets the other car.
  • Session drummer Hal Blaine played on this. He played on many hit songs, including The Beach Boys' "Fun Fun Fun" and "Surfin' Safari." It was one of the first songs that Brian Wilson used session musicians on, replacing his brother Dennis on drums. (thanks, Neil - raleigh, NC)

    Best Friend Lyrics

(When your Best Friends are strung out)
    You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start

Feeling, sleeping, in the field again,
Oh, I can feel, I can feel
I can feel, it's beginning to end

Yeah, premonition smiling in the dark
Oh, I can see, I can see
I can see the story starting to arc

    Ohhh ohhhh ohhhh ohhhhh

    It's comes up
    I've been a spoken word
    I've been a river bed
    I've been a rabid voice
And let it flow up from within

Sometimes it feels like I only dream in black and white

    Ahhh, ahhhh, ahhhhhh, ahhhhh
    And colors so

(When your best friends are strung out)
    You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, you say it's what you need
And hide your eyes when you're close to me
(When you feel up in the clouds)
Well, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start

Waits, and fed us, slipping into dreams
Oh, I can feel, I can feel
I can feel the celestial beings

Oh welted pleasures leaving with the breath
I can see, I can see
I can see the beauty in the mask

    Ohhh, ohhhh, ohhhh, ohhh

    It draws up
    I've been a river bed
I tried to salt the wound
I've carried more than I can
I feel I've got a lot to prove
Sometimes I feel like I only dream in black and white

    Ohhh, ohhh, ohhhh, ohhh
    But colors so

(When your best friends are strung out)
    You'll do everything you can
'Cause you're never gonna let it get em down
(When you find it all around)
Yeah, you say it's what you need
You hide your eyes when you're close to me
(When you feel up in the clouds)
    You ought to know
That I'm here no matter where you want to go
    (In your head hanging upside-down)
Well, it comes in waves, but it's hardest from the start

I'm here, no matter where you are
So let it in with, open arms, no matter where you are
    Sometimes, you'll have to wait,
And it passes by like a satellite or star
    No matter where you are

(When your best friends are strung out)
    You know when
    Ooh-hoooo-hooooo
(When you feel up in the clouds)
    Oh, yeah, you know when
    Ooh-hoooo-ooh hooooo

(When your best friends are strung out)
    Oh, yeah, you know when
    You ought to know
That I'm here no matter where you want to go
    (In your head, hanging upside-down)

    Best Friend
  • This funked-up pop jam finds Mark Foster singing: "When your best friend's all strung out, you do everything you can 'cause you're never gonna let it get him down." The Foster the People frontman told Q magazine that the line is not about drugs, but about his difficulty coming up with the lyric. "It's like your creative spirit, your best friend that you rely on is out of action," he said.
  • Mark Foster told Jam! Music the story of the song: "That lyric and that vocal melody came to me before any of the music or anything else, which usually doesn't happen that way," he said. "And I wrote the song around that."

"And so that first verse (starts singing), 'When your best friend's all strung out,' I heard that in my head like a children's choir singing that lyric with that melody," he continued. "I think, in some ways, writing like a pop song to tackle subject matter that's hard to talk about is defiant in nature, that it's actually a rebellion against the subject matter. To be able to smile in the face of adversity."
  • The video tells a horror story of a pill-popping cannibal model. The clip reflects the senselessness of those who try to escape life through drugs and delusion. "It's a commentary on the modeling industry and the fashion industry and the pressures women feel and girls feel every day," said Mark Foster to MTV News. "It's a playful take on that; it's not too heavy handed."

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going Lyrics

And I am tellin' you I'm not goin'
You're best man I've ever known
There's no way I can ever go
    No, no, there's no way
    No, no, no, no, way

    I'm not livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
    I don't wanna be free
    I'm stayin', I'm stayin'
    And you, and you
    You're gonna love me

And I am tellin' you, I'm not goin'
Even though the rough times are showin'
    There's just no way
    There's no way

We're part of the same place
We're part of the same time, yeah
We both share the same blood
We both have the same mind

    And time and time
We have so much to share
No, no, no, no, no, no
I'm not wakin' up tomorrow mornin'
And findin' that there's nobody there

    Darlin' there's no way
    No, no, no, no, way
    I'm livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
You see there's just no way
    There's no way

    Tear down the mountains
    Yell, scream and shout
You can say what you want
    I'm not walkin' out'

    Stop all the rivers
    Push, strike and kill
    I'm not gonna leave you
    There's no way I will

And I am tellin' you, I'm not goin'
You're the best man I'll ever know
There's no way I can ever, ever go
    No, no, no, no, way
    No, no, no, no, way

    I'm livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
    Not livin' without you
    I don't wanna be free
    I'm stayin', I'm stayin'
And you, and you, and you
    You're gonna love me
You're gonna love me, yes, ah

    Ooh, ooh, love me
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh love me
Love me, love me, love me
Love me, you're gonna love me

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going
  • This was from the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which is loosely based on the history of the Supremes. Holliday appeared in the musical playing Effie White. In 1982, she won a Tony for her performance, and the song won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. That same year, the soundtrack won a Grammy for Best Cast Show Album.
  • Holliday's performance of this song stopped the show and became her signature song. It was then released as a single, became a #1 R&B hit, and led to a career in pop music. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • Jennifer Hudson played Effie White in the movie adaptation of the show, winning the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2006 Oscars. Her version of this torch song was released as a single reaching #60 in the US. It also appears on her 2008 self-titled debut album.

    Darlin' Lyrics

    Darlin'
    I'm feeling pretty lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
    But I don't have a dime
Darlin' you're so far behind me
    Tomorrow's gonna find me
    Further down the line

    Takin' me some paper
    Pencil in my hand
    I'm gonna write
Darlin' you know I feel the cold nights
    Thinking of the old nights
    Spent along with you

Darlin' the tear is in my eye now
    Knowing I can try now
To make it back to you

    Darlin'
    Love you more than ever
    Wish we were together
    Darlin' of mine

    Darlin'
    I'm feeling pretty lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
    But I don't have a dime
Darlin' you're so far behind me
    Tomorrow's gonna find me
    Further down the line

    Oh my darlin'
    I'm feeling pretty lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
    But I don't have a dime

    Darlin'
    I'm feeling pretty lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
    But I don't have a dime

    Darlin'
    I'm feeling pretty lonesome
I'd call you on the phone some
    But I don't have a dime

    Darlin'
  • Oscar Stewart Blandamer's music career started as a sax player with such bands as Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, Johnny Wakelin & the Kinshasa Band, and the Q Tips. He went onto forge a successful songwriting career penning such tunes as "I'll Mend Your Broken Heart" for Phil Everly and Cliff Richard and "Tomb of Memories" for Paul Young. This tune was Blandameyer's most successful song.
  • Despite writing "Darlin" in 1970, it wasn't until 1977 that the song was recorded by the British Country band Poacher, who had won the British TV talent show New Faces. It was expected that it would be a big hit for them, but despite a great deal of airplay it flopped in the UK though it did make #86 on the US Country charts.

A year later, producer Dave Mackay gave the song to Frankie Miller, who recorded a a rock and blues version giving him his first and and only UK Top 10 hit. It also topped the singles chart in Norway and fell just short of the US Hot 100.
  • Miller only recorded this because of pressure from his record label to do more commercial material. He'd been given an ultimatum by his label, record a hit single or be dropped. "They were always trying to shape Frankie in some way," his partner Annette told Mojo magazine, "So when they got him to cover Darlin' it saddened him. He didn't really rate it as a song and it wasn't at all representative."
  • According to Ray Minhinnett, the guitarist on Miller's 1977 album Full House, when the singer finally met Blandamer in a club after recording the song, he swore at the songwriter, took a bottle of ketchup and covered him in it.
  • There have been many other recorded versions of the song, including two successful ones by by David Rogers and Tom Jones, both of which reached the Top 20 of the Billboard country chart. Bonnie Raitt also sang it in the John Travolta film Urban Cowboy.

We May Never Love Like This Again Lyrics

We May Never Love Like This Again
    Don't stop the flow
    We can't let go

We may never love like this again
    And touch the sky
    Now we may try

    So while we here
    Let's give up all
We listed the dreams inside us
    And set them free

    Oh, while we here
    Let's live a mark
There's a candle in the dark
    It's here to guide us

We may never love like this again
    But through the days
    Beyond the highs
    I'll see you
    Reaching out to hold me
    I don't know just
    Where or when
    Still I'm sure

We'll love again, we'll love again
We'll love again (we may never love like this again)

We'll love again (we may never love like this again)
We'll love again (we may never love like this again)

We'll love again (we may never love like this again)

  • This was the theme from the 1974 disaster film The Towering Inferno. McGovern made a short appearance in the film.
  • Although this song was not much of a hit as a pop single, it won an Oscar for Best Original Song. One year after McGovern recorded it, it was included on her third album, Academy Award Performance.
  • Along with "The Morning After" (her biggest hit) and the Oscar-nominated song "Wherever Love Takes Me" (from the 1974 disaster film "Gold"), this song led the media to called McGovern "the Disaster Theme Queen." (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for all above)

    Somewhere Else
  • The title track of Lydia Loveless' third album was written while she was at SXSW. The singer recalled to American Songwriter magazine: "It sort of came to me when I was half asleep and I knew I wanted to call the album that, but I knew the song had to be really good. When we finally got into the studio with it I was amazed with how we handled it–I think it sounds really dreamy, especially the harmonies. I'm very proud of it."
  • The song describes a constant wanderlust: "I just have a lot of discontent and restlessness," Loveless told Radio.com . "So it's mostly about that."
