Runaway Daydreamer

The second single from Wanderlust is a fleeting fantasy of running away from everyday life and seeing what else the world holds. It was released on March 31, 2014.

The upbeat track's string-laden chorus features violin by Gita Langley. An honors student at The Royal Academy of Music in London, Langley recorded violin on UK hit singles by The Streets' ("Dry Your Eyes") and Mutya ("Real Girl"). Gita's sisters Amy and Rosie also contributed strings on Wanderlust.

This is Ellis-Bextor's 10th music video directed by Sophie Muller (the first was "Take Me Home"). Like the clip for "Young Blood," the singer is clad in a striped dress and sings around a pier and in a posh living room.

Which Way You Goin' Billy?

The Poppy Family were the Canadian duo of Terry and Susan Jacks, who were husband and wife at the time. Terry Jacks, who four years later would release the ubiquitous "Seasons in the Sun," wrote the song whilst Susan sang lead.

Terry was a big Buddy Holly fan, and started writing the song in his pre-Poppy days with the working title "Which Way You Goin' Buddy?" He had the melody, but couldn't come up with a lyrical theme. A few years later, after he formed The Poppy Family, he hit on the idea. In our interview with Terry Jacks , he explained: "It was in 1969 and I had been reading about all these guys going to Vietnam and leaving their women behind in Seattle, and I knew somebody down there that was doing that. I thought, 'Wow, that must be awful.' These guys go and their wives or girlfriends wouldn't know whether they were coming back. That's quite a deal, going to war over there, and it was such a stupid war. So I said, 'That's what I'm going to write about: this woman that's left behind. Which way you going, Billy? Can I go, too?'"

Terry Jacks decided to name the lead character in this song "Billy" after hearing a song "Billy, Billy Went A Walkin'" by one of his favorite acts, a Montreal group called The Beau Marks. Jacks thought the name was a good fit. He told us: "I used the name Billy, because you've got to use a name that isn't going to stick out like a sore thumb. You can't do, 'Which way you goin', Lawrence.' Lots of people are called Billy, and it's a name that doesn't rub you wrong or anything."

Romantic couples who make music together rarely stay romantic for long, especially when the producer husband tries to coax a better vocal out of the singer wife. When Susan did her vocal for this song, Terry thought it was perfect... too perfect. The couple, who were married from 1967-1973, argued over whether or not she should redo her vocal, and Terry convinced her to give it another try. "The next day we went in and she did it first take," he said. "She was so tired and she was so worn out, she captured the feel. It fit the song. The other performance was too happy."

This was the first song The Poppy Family released outside of Canada. In 1968, they had minor hits in Canada with "Beyond The Clouds" and "What Can The Matter Be." This led to a deal with London Records, which released the song internationally. It went to #1 in Canada and was also the group's biggest hit in both the US and UK.

This won the 1970 Juno award (Canada's version of the Grammys) for Best Produced Single.

Pushit

This song talks about his experiences with being abused as a child and how his parents claimed to love him yet abused him. Hence the last phrase in the song, "Remember I will always love you, as I claw your f--king throat away. It will end no other way, it will end no other way." In the first verse he says, "Choke this infant here before me" - here he is referring to himself as the infant and suffering from neglect and abuse. Throughout the song, he describes how he would like to take revenge on his parents and strike back, but was afraid for fear of continued abuse. Inertiatic ESP

The album details the last days of a Los Angeles graffiti artist that guitarist Omar A. Rodriguez Lopez and lead singer Cedric Bixler were friends with. He is known over the course of this album as Cerpin Taxt. In this track, Cerpin Taxt, who was a suicidal drug addict, injects rat poison and falls into a coma. Later tracks depict the visions Cerpin Taxt would have seen while in the coma.

The version of this song on the single has "Son Et Lumiere," the track that precedes it on Deloused In The Comatorium, attached as part of the song. Tench described the title track to American Songwriter as "a pretty mean song." He added: "It's basically a murder ballad. It's one of those songs where the guy feels 'whatever' for whatever reason. He's angry at the girl and he's taking her down by the river. In murder ballads, you take the girl down by the river. She's not coming back. I thought all of those things would be interesting to play with."

"Basically, I thought that it sounded like a cool-sounding phrase," Tench continued. "I like the song a lot. It's one of the newest things on the record. I wrote it about a month before we cut it."

This song is about a guy who had a girlfriend, but then she broke up with him. Like it says in one of the verses, "I got up to wash my face, when I come back to bed someone's taken my place." But later on they get back together - "Jubilation, she loves me again." No too much should be read into the lyrics of this song. As Paul Simon explained in an interview with Rolling Stone: "Every day I'd come back from the studio, working on whatever we were working on, and I'd play this pounding thing. So then I said, 'Let's make a record out of that.' So we copied it over and extended it double the amount, so now we have three minutes of track, and the track is great. So now I pick up the guitar and I start to go, 'Well, this will be like the guitar part' - dung chicka dung chicka dung, and lyrics were virtually the first lines I said: 'You're breakin' my heart, I'm down on my knees.' They're not lines at all, but it was right for that song, and I like that. It was like a little piece of magical fluff, but it works." (thanks, Lisa - Palatine, IL)

In the Catholic church, Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. In this context, the song can be interpreted as the singer asking for musical guidance, possibly to help writing a song. Paul Simon says he can't remember the specific inspiration when he was writing the song, but he knew Cecilia is the goddess of music. (thanks, Peter - L.A., CA)

According to the liner notes to Paul Simon's Anthology album, the strange sounding rhythm to this particular track was Paul and Art slapping their thighs, while Paul's brother Eddie thumped a piano bench and a friend named Stewie Scharff strummed a guitar with its strings slackened to the point of atonality. This all happened at a house Paul and Art were living in on Blue Jay Way in the summer of 1969, not long after the Charles Manson murders took place at the nearby home of the actress Sharon Tate. After they started the pounding and came up with the rhythm, they got out their Sony reel-to-reel tape recorder and made the recording. There was a 1:15 section that Simon thought was great, so they looped it in the studio, which wasn't easy in 1969 - you had to actually cut out the tape and put it on the recorder in a loop. Their producer Roy Halee added some reverb, and they had their basic backing track from this home recording. (thanks, Nick - Auckland, New Zealand)

Worked into the mix is the sound of drumsticks falling on the parquet floor of the Columbia Records studio in Los Angeles. Simon also played a bit of xylophone that was heavily processed and added to the track. They had a lot of fun recording it and were enjoying various experiments in sound.

In 1996 Suggs, the lead singer for Madness, teamed up with vocal duo Louchie Lou and Michie One to record a cover that peaked at #4 in the UK. This is the only time the song reached the Top 75 in Britain as surprisingly Simon & Garfunkel's original 1970 single failed to chart there.

The Swedish Pop group Ace Of Base recorded a song called "Cecilia" on their 1998 album Flowers that was based on the character in this song.

This English Oceans track finds Patterson Hood singing of a woman resisting the bonds of genuine connection. Hood wrote this song after reading Richmond Fontaine frontman and author Willy Vlautin's 2014 novel of three intersecting lives, The Free. He penned it about one of its main characters, Pauline Hawkins, an emotionally removed nurse.

Hood said: "I got an advance copy of Willy's latest book, The Free. I've been a fan of his writing for a while. I read it in about three days. I finished it on Saturday, I wrote the song on Sunday, and then we cut it on Thursday and mastered the record on the following Monday. It sure makes it a better record."

This was the Supremes' last hit written by the songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. Shortly thereafter, they left Motown to start their own record labels - Hot Wax and Invictus. This Patterson Hood penned song is a scathing takedown of the procession of scandals that plague the political world year after year. "It's about political assholery - there's someone new playing that role every few months," he said. "As soon as we get rid of one of them, someone comes up and starts playing that part again."
