This song is about how we're all in it together; whatever we're going through, there are many others going through it at the same time.

It was written by Ann Hampton Callaway, a Jazz/Cabaret singer known for improvising songs based on audience suggestions. When we spoke with Callaway , she explained how Streisand helped her bring this song together: "She got on the phone with me and I was a little intimidated to speak with her, but I said, 'Barbra, what do you want me to do here?' She said, 'I want it to be simple but profound.'

What does that mean? 'I want people to understand exactly what you mean the first time you hear a song, and then the second time and third time, every time after that, to have new meanings unfold.' As it turns out, that simple guidance has been something I think of every time I write a song now. It's been a wonderful filter for everything I try to do."

Ann Hampton Callaway wrote the first version of this song in 1987, but wouldn't let anyone have it because she was determined to have Streisand record it. Callaway's friend Amanda McBroom, who wrote the song "The Rose," passed the song along to Streisand's record company, who loved the song, but asked for a rewrite, since Streisand is very particular about her songs. "I said I would be willing to do whatever it takes," Callaway told us. "I think it was 150 rewrites later, she said, 'OK, I think this is perfect. I think I'm ready to do it.' It was just a thrill to have that message out in the world in her voice. I knew in my guts never to give up on that dream."

Ocean Spray

Ocean Spray is a cranberry drink given to patients in hospitals in the UK and Ireland.

This is about Manic's guitarist James Dean Bradfield's mother and her battle with cancer. "Oh, please stay awake and then we can drink some Ocean Spray" refers to James in the hospital with his mother, begging her not to die.

"Me-totemo-utsukushi-i-desu-ne totemo-utsukushi-i-me-wo-shitemasu" is what's said at the start of the song. It's a quote by photographer Mitch Ikeda, and is Japanese for "Oh, you've got beautiful eyes." (thanks, Gilliann - Dublin, Ireland, for all above)

Bradfield told NME October 8, 2011 that the song was "Inspired by my mum's passing. You have doubts over whether you should convert those emotions."

Richard Dreyfuss' character, Mr Holland, sings this to his deaf son in the movie Mr. Holland's Opus. In the scene, Mr. Holland is upset over the death of John Lennon. When his son asks him what is wrong, Mr. Holland explains that he wouldn't understand. Pretty Girls

Many of the tunes chosen for Riser reflect Bentley's resilience and determination following the death of his father. However, he also included several lighter songs on the set, to reflect his love of having a good time. Bentley said of this track: "I feel like that song is taking a new approach to get to the same destination. We're all having a good time, partying and having fun, but just the vibe of that is so different from anything I've ever recorded."

"So there's that element of it, and then there's kind of a third layer to the album, which would be songs like 'I Hold On,' 'Riser,' 'Here on Earth,' that really kind of show where I am in my life as a dude, as a man, as a husband, father," Bentley continued. "Just kinda looking at the world around me, and making observations on that."
