Rip It Up

Formed in 1976 as the Nu-Sonics (named after a cheap brand of guitar), this Glasgow band were galvanized into Orange Juice by impresario Alan Horne at the end of the decade. In the early 1980s they were part of the scene that their original label, Postcard, celebrated as "The Sound of Young Scotland" along with fellow bands Josef K and Aztec Camera.

Orange Juice are best known for this song, which reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart in February 1983, the group's only UK Top 40 hit. Frontman Edwyn Collins went on to experience some solo success, particularly with his 1994 transatlantic hit "A Girl Like You."

The song signaled a departure from the sound of the band's earlier post-punk singles, revealing a white-boy funk influence with Chic influenced guitars and a synthesizer. It was the first UK chart hit to feature the Rowland TB – 303 synth, which eventually became synonymous with the Acid House scene.

The backing vocals were provided by Paul Quinn, a classmate of Collins between the ages of 11 and 15. Quinn went on to front Bourgie Bourgie, a Scottish band who had a #48 UK hit with "Breaking Point" in 1984. He also collaborated with Edwyn Collins on a version of The Velvet Underground's "Pale Blue Eyes," which reached #72 in the UK the same year.

The lyric, "you know the scene and it's very humdrum. And my favorite songs entitled boredom," is a dig at the state of early 1980s Pop, but also a reference to the Buzzcocks, whose debut EP Spiral Scratch was a huge influence on Orange Juice's DIY ethos. A snatch of the guitar riff from the EP's track "Boredom" briefly chimes in after that line.

An NME review at the time said of the Rip it Up album: "Orange Juice are a minor group trying hard to be bigger and more significant than a really ought to be." The negative appraisal upset Edwin Collins who recalled in 2013: "When Rip It Up got slagged off by the NME, I would refuse to go on the tour bus because I was depressed! You can laugh about it now, but back then it was life and death."

Rip it Up's saxophone parts were provided by British jazz performer Dick Morrisey, who also featured on material by Paul McCartney, Gary Numan, Peter Gabriel and Vangelis. (He played the haunting saxophone solo on the Vangelis composition "Love Theme" for the 1982 film Blade Runner).

Open Your Eyes

This was the first single from Alter Bridge. The group is made up of members of Creed, with the exception of singer Scott Stapp . Brian Marshall returned to Alter Bridge after leaving Creed, while singer Myles Kennedy also joined the group.

Like many songs on the album, this is about regrets. The chorus seems to be encouraging peace.

Alter Bridge guitarist/songwriter Mark Tremonti wanted "Down To My Last" to be the first single, but the record company rejected it, saying it sounded too much like Creed. This was chosen instead. (thanks, Doron - Toronto, Canada, for all above)

A re-recorded version of this song was used on the "Grab Some Air" advert for the United States Air Force Reserve, which was aired during the 2010 Super Bowl. The White Stripes duo saw red over the alleged unauthorized borrowing of their tune and posted a message on their Web site that read, "We believe our song was re-recorded and used without permission of the White Stripes, our publishers, label or management. The White Stripes take strong insult and objection to the Air Force Reserve's presenting this advertisement with the implication that we licensed one of our songs to encourage recruitment during a war that we do not support."
The musician who wrote the music for the Air Force Reserve commercial, Kem Kraft, told The New York Times that the similarity is entirely unintentional. He said: "I'm sorry it sounds the same. It wasn't my intention, truly, truly, truly. [If they] want to call me and talk to me, as far as I'm concerned, I'm responsible for this. Just me. I'm pretty much a one-man band here. It doesn't have anything to do with the Air Force. They didn't know anything, and I didn't know anything either."

This was originally written by Pete Townshend for his aborted Lifehouse project, which was intended to be a Rock Opera similar to The Who's Tommy and Quadrophenia. Many of the songs Townshend wrote for Lifehouse ended up on the 1971 Who's Next album. "Let's See Action" was recorded for the album, but didn't make the cut. Instead, it was released as a single in the fall of 1971 in the UK peaking at #16. In the US it remained unreleased until its inclusion on the Hooligans compilation album in 1981.

Roger Daltrey recalled to Uncut magazine October 2001: "Pete was going through a terrible bitterness about the fact that Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp hadn't got behind making Lifehouse as a film. But the reason they didn't get behind it was because they couldn't get to grips with the narrative, and I still feel to this day – even though Pete's done his Lifehouse Chronicles box and done it as a radio play – well, I'm sorry but though there's some incredible music in there and some sparks of theoretical and theological ideas, I think the narrative thread of the story is about as exciting as a f---ing whelk race! But I always liked 'Let's See Action.' It's got that texture of explosive rock'n'roll bits mixed in with a laid-back, almost country feel. I still love the sentiment behind it, too."

The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, was shot at West Taghkanic Diner in West Taghkanic, New York. It follows Stone and her boyfriend, played by model James Guardino, on an evening out that seemingly ends with a car crash until the clip starts rewinding to the opening scene.

Kahn also killed off the guys from Korn with a fatal car accident in the music video for "A.D.I.D.A.S."

Wasp Man

This Keith Moon penned song was the B- side to the band's single "Relay." The origins of the track lay in a late-1960s incident aboard a plane flight. Roger Daltrey recalled to Uncut magazine October 2001: "It all happened on a flight from Copenhagen back to London. We hit some bad weather and, my god, I've been in some planes that have done some things in my time but this f---ing plane was like a rollercoaster ride, it almost flipped over."

"We'd got through this weather and it all sort of leveled out and everybody was puking and sitting in almost total silence," Daltrey continued. "Now, meantime, Moon's disappeared. He was sat with this groupie bird who had this tiger-skin coat which he's taken, and her bra. Needless to say this girl had very large mammaries. So he disappears up the back of the plane to the bog. Everybody's still puking and the captain's come out and he's standing there apologising, saying it's the worst weather he'd ever been through."

"Then from the back suddenly there came this 'bzzzzzzzzz!' We looked round and it was Moon stood with the two bits of her bra over his eyes like big fly eyeballs and he's got her tiger-skin coat tied round his neck like a cape," Daltrey added. "And he shouted, 'Don't worry, folks – Waspman's here to save you!' And he did this thing up and down the plane buzzing away as Waspman, kissing all the women and just f---ing around in general. By the end of it everybody was just rolling about laughing. He'd taken the edge off that hairy situation and cheered everyone up."

"So that's how 'Waspman' was created," he concluded. "We'd already done 'Batman' a few years before so we said, 'OK, we'd better write a theme for Waspman!'"

Dave Gilmour in Guitar World February 1993: "'A Saucerful of Secrets' was a very important track; it gave us our direction forward. If you take 'A Saucerful of Secrets,' 'Atom Heart Mother' and 'Echoes' - all lead logically to Dark Side of the Moon. 'A Saucerful' was inspired when Roger and Nick [Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer] began drawing weird shapes on a piece of paper. We then composed music based on the structure of the drawing."

Guitar World asked Gilmour about the techniques he used to get such unusual guitar tones back then. He replied: "Well, on the middle section of 'A Saucerful of Secrets,' most of the time the guitar was lying on the studio floor. And I unscrewed one of the legs from a mic stand... You know how mic stands have three steel legs about a foot long? I just whizzed one of those up and down the neck - not very subtly. Another technique, which came a bit later, is to take a small piece of steel and rub it from side to side across the strings. You just move it and stop it in places that sound good. It's something like an E-bow."

The Divinity of Purpose

This was the title track to Hatebreed's sixth album, which followed their 2009 self-titled effort. They started putting riffs together in 2011 and played early versions of the songs when they toured with Five Finger Death Punch. They continued to refine the songs the following year when they toured with Lamb of God, making sure they played well in a live setting.

In our interview with Hatebreed lead singer/lyricist Jamey Jasta , he said: "A lot of people ask me what 'The Divinity of Purpose' is about, a lot of people think it's about a person. I think in the liner notes, because I had to write something, I might have alluded to that. But it could be about music, it could be about your dog, it could be about an ex or a family member. I like to have it be open to interpretation."

Honor Never Dies

"When you do something honorable for somebody, it lives on through that person," Hatebreed lead singer Jamey Jasta says by way of explaining this track. He got the idea for the song when he was visiting his grandfather in a veteran's hospital. He was talking to another patient, and was later told that this man hadn't had a visitor in over a year. This is when Jamey realized that you could be a war hero, yet still die alone.

In our interview with Jamey Jasta , he explained: "I wasn't coming from a place of anger, but I'm screaming in this aggressive way. I just wanted to have it represent the passion I felt about the topic."

As this song was coming together in the studio, the band knew they had something special. Jasta says they took a different approach in writing it. He told us: "That's the first song that I suggested we do two different guitar lines and a different bass line - and never follow everybody playing the same notes. And I think it gives an interesting sound - we've never done that before as a band. It gives an interesting temp change and mood shift from the riff in the verse to the chorus."
