New Frontier Lyrics

New Frontier
  • This was included on Fagen's first solo album after Steely Dan called it quits in 1981. The song is about growing up in the suburbs in the late '50s and early '60s. Some of the cultural references include "pushing the button," "Tuesday Weld" and "Dave Brubeck." The title comes from President Kennedy's political agenda for the country during his brief administration. (thanks, Chris - Bristolville, OH)
  • The song is a satirical take on life in the early 1960s, particularly the fear of a nuclear war, which had been revived in the early 1980s. (thanks, Mike - Santa Barbara, CA)
  • On The Charlie Gillett Show on London's Capital Radio in 1988, Fagen said: "You'll hear a little blues guitar played by Larry Carlton, and it's kind of a track reflecting the spirit of the times. The storyline is basically about a bunch of kids who have a party in a fall-out shelter while their parents are away for the weekend." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

I Will Never Let You Down Lyrics

Tell me baby what we're gonna do
I’ll make it easy, got a lot to lose
    Watch the sunlight, coming through
Open the window, let it shine on you

'Cause I’ve been sick and working all week
And I’ve been doing just fine
You’ve been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy
You can take it all these spaces
    Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I Will Never Let You Down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

There’s a million ways to go
Don’t be embarrassed if you lose control
On the rooftop, now you know
Your body’s frozen and you lost your soul

'Cause I’ve been sick and working all week
And I’ve been doing just fine
You’ve been tired of watching me
Forgot to have a good time, boy
You can take it all these spaces
    Never keeping it real
I know exactly how you feel

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

Let me take you where you never go
Have a little fun, it's the only way we know
Let me show you what you never see
You know how to love only when you're holding me

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down
When you feeling low on love
I’ll be what you dreaming of
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

When you say you've had enough
And you might just give it up
    Oh, oh
I will never let you down

I Will Never Let You Down
  • The first single from Rita Ora's second album features her boyfriend, the Scottish DJ and producer Calvin Harris. When asked by Nick Grimshaw on his BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show what it was like working with her man, she confessed: "Honestly, it was so natural. I wouldn't have done it if it didn't make any sense."

"I was never really against [working with] people I'm involved with [and] doing something personally," Ora added. "We were sitting at home, he started humming and then I started humming and then we hummed together!"
  • The song plays in the background during a commercial for British cosmetics brand Rimmel's "Color Rush" collection. The ad features Ora striking some poses during a photoshoot to promote the product.
  • Speaking with Paper magazine, Ora described this as, "a very important song to me because it's a love song, but it reminds you of Whitney. And that was the vibe we were on. We just wanted to feel good."

She added: "You know that feeling of 'How Will I Know' with the synth? It just makes you feel happy; that's what I wanted to create."
  • Ora admitted to Nick Grimshaw that she was a bit nervous collaborating with Harris, as he'd never seen her before in work mode. "I was like, 'What if I riff a bit bad?'" she said. "But literally just ten minutes in he was so blunt, I think it's the Scottish-ness in him, he was just like 'no' etc and it happened so quick. It was a very good experience."

"It's about having fun... and cos I take everything so seriously, I'm always a bit like work, work," Ora continued. "He's like, you really need to just enjoy it. And I agree, so I'm just enjoying it right now. And I'm happy we kinda did it together. It's a nice little feeling for me, it makes it personal."
  • A remix by Switch was included on Pepsi's curated album, Beats of the Beautiful Game, a compilation of upbeat anthems released to coincide with the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

British DJ and producer Switch is best known for his work with M.I.A.
  • Rita Ora broke up with Calvin Harris a few months after the single's release but she still cherishes the love they had in the past. "This song was written out of love," she said during an On Air with Ryan Seacrest radio interview. "I don't want anybody to have like a dark cloud over this song."

  • Red Dragon Cartel is a Rock band featuring one-time Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Jake E, Lee, vocalist Darren "D.J." Smith of Canadian metallers Warmachine, drummer Jonas Fairley (Black Betty) and bassist Ronnie Mancuso (Beggars & Thieves), with the latter co-producing the disc with Lee under the pseudonym R. The band's name references the guitarist's Japanese roots.
  • This track, which features Cheap Trick's Robin Zander, was the band's lead single. Jake E, Lee told Guitar International that the creation of the song was a turning point in making their debut album, as he felt that Zander had the perfect voice for the tune. "I sat down, I listened, and heard Robin Zander and it was a surreal moment with a song I'd just written," he said. "It made me feel alive. It was the most alive I've probably felt in 20 years."

Lee added: "I don't think I had missed doing it until that moment when I was listening to that track. I just said, 'Yes, yes, count me in. Let's do this s--t. I'm ready to go.'"
  • Lee recalled to Classic Rock Revisited the first time he met Zander: "I finally got to meet him when they came through town and they were opening for Aerosmith," he said. "I met him and I was like, 'Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for agreeing to sing on that song. I can't believe you would do that.' The funny thing was that he goes, 'Nobody ever asks me to do that. I was excited that somebody wanted me to sing on their song.' He is one of the most iconic rock singers of all time and the fact that he is not asked, left and right, by other artists to do that is weird."

Hard to Make A Stand Lyrics

    Old James Dean Monroe
Hands out flowers at the Shop N Go
Hopes for money but all he gets is fear
And the wind blows up his coat

And this he scribbles on a perfume note
"If I'm not here then you're not here"
    And he says
    "Call me Miscreation
    I'm a walking celebration"

    [Chorus]
And it's Hard to Make A Stand
And it's hard to make a stand
It's hard to make a stand
It's hard to make s stand

    My friend, o lawdy,
Went to take care of her body,
And she got shot down in the road
She looked up before she went,

Said, "This isn't really what I meant"
And the Daily News said, "Two with one stone"
    And I say,
    "Hey there, Miscreation,
Bring a flower, time is wasting"

    [Chorus]

    Yes it is

We got loud guitars and big suspicions,
Great big guns and small ambitions,
And we still argue over who is God
    And I say,

    "Hey there, Miscreation,
Bring a flower, time is wasting"
    I say,
    "Hey there, Miscreation,
    We all need a revelation"

    [Chorus]

  • This song seems to look at the world through the eyes of a person trying to make sense of this world. It mixes the morbid with a strange sense of hope. Plenty of black humor to go around, as well.

    You're Not Alone Lyrics

When your reflection in the mirror smiles back it lies, you know it.

When you lay your head to sleep at night it's filled with every moment
Every chance you miss to be something, well learn from your mistakes

You're Not Alone you're with me
You're not alone you're with me

Don't let the world bring you down
There's always hope for the willing
Don't let the world bring you down
It's not over, you're not alone anymore

When it feels like all is lost and there's no guide that's left to prove it
Take a look inside, cherish your life
And live before you lose it

You're all waiting for the answer
Keep on searching, strength in numbers

Don't let the world bring you down
There's always hope for the willing
Don't let the world bring you down
It's not over, you're not alone anymore

At the end of the day, what will you choose?
Will you keep moving on, or be forced to lose
Look inside of yourself, 'cause the power's in you
There is always hope, you're not alone

    Anymore

Don't let the world bring you down
There's always hope for the willing
Don't let the world bring you down
It's not over, you're not alone anymore

Don't let the world bring you down
Don't let the world bring you down
    You're not alone
Don't let the world bring you down

    You're Not Alone
  • This was released as the first single from of Mice And Men's third album Restoring Force. The album title is a reference to Of Mice and Men's previous LP, The Flood. Said vocalist Austin Carlile: "What happens after a disaster? What happens after 'The Flood'? You return to normal. You find balance again. That's what we felt like we were doing with this album. We wanted this record to bring equilibrium back to our band and music. We're letting everyone know what we're here to stay. We're 'Restoring Force.'"
  • Asked by Ultimate-Guitar.com what happened guitar-wise on this song, Phil Manansala replied: "I think we used a Naylor head and an ESP reverse headstock so it's a Baritone jumbo 7-string [LTD SC-607B]. And we also used the Baritone Les Paul because the Baritone sounds so tight and it just sounds bigger I feel like. That tone on that song sounds huge. That song just sounds massive. Four-on-the-floor the whole time too. That sounds like a rock and roll song."

    Clever got me this far
    Then tricky got me in
    Eye on what I'm after
    I don't need another friend

    Smile and drop the cliche
    'Til you think I'm listening
Take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

    Peripheral on The Package
    Don't care to settle in
    Time to feed the monster
    I don't need another friend

    Comfort is a mystery
Crawling out of my own skin
Just give me what I came for
    I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get just what I need
Lie to get what I crave
Lie and smile to get what's mine

    Eye on what I'm after
    I don't need another friend
Nod and watch your lips move
If you need me to pretend

Because clever got me this far
    Then tricky got me in
I'll take just what I came for
Then I'm out the door again

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I'm craving
Lie and smile to get what's mine

    Give this to me
    Mine, mine, mine
    Take what's mine
    Mine, mine, mine
    Take what's mine
    Mine, mine, mine

Lie to get what I came for
Lie to get what I need now
Lie to get what I crave
Lie to smile and get what's mine

    Give this to me
    Take what's mine
    Mine, mine, mine
    Take what's mine

    Give this to me

    Take what's mine
    Take what's mine
    Mine
    Take what's mine
    Take what's mine
    Take what's mine

    The Package
  • The lyrics seem to indicate sex; perhaps a one-night-stand with somebody: "Eye on what I'm after, I don't need another friend." The subject is after something that has planned using clever motives and tricks, he's not looking for a friend: "I'll take just what I came for, then I'm out the door again."
  • Another interpretation for this song is that it may concern the use of drugs: "Peripheral on the package, Don't care to settle in." The subject is set on doing what it is he/she has to do and leave. (thanks, Justin - Sierra Vista, AZ)

  • This song finds Malkmus singing of growing up "listening to the music of the best decade ever." He explained to Billboard magazine: "I was trying to write something that Taylor Swift would write, or maybe even more Katy Perry. I was thinking in wide ways. For me I'm a seventies guy, and sometimes when you're in your early adolescence or when the chicks are just a little older, and kind of out of your reach, they're the ones you sort of like at that young age. Seventies chicks and seventies rock."
  • Malkmus sings about the Grateful Dead in the song. He explained to Rolling Stone: "Back then, the Grateful Dead was a fratboy stand-in for alternative. If you were into the Dead, for a frat boy, that was like being into Faust or something. So the St. Elmo's rich guys at UVA would play it on the lawn and throw some Frisbees"

"That song is just like a party at [Pavement percussionist] Bob Nastanovich's house where everyone is wigging out," he added. "It's about loving music, loving WTJU, loving the Butthole Surfers – bonding over that s--t. There's that pathetic rallying cry at the end, 'We grew up listening to the music of the best decade ever!' Which could be anyone's era of music."

    Sunday Morning Coming Down Lyrics

Well, I woke up Sunday morning
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
Then I fumbled in my closet through my clothes
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
Then I washed my face and combed my hair
And stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my mind the night before
With cigarettes and songs I'd been picking.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid
Playing with a can that he was kicking.
Then I walked across the street
And caught the Sunday smell of someone frying chicken.
And Lord, it took me back to something that I'd lost
    Somewhere, somehow along the way.

    On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
    Of the sleeping city sidewalk
    And Sunday Morning Coming Down.

In the park I saw a daddy
With a laughing little girl that he was swinging.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school
And listened to the songs they were singing.
Then I headed down the street,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringing,
And it echoed through the canyon
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

    On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
I'm wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday
That makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothing short a' dying
That's half as lonesome as the sound
    Of the sleeping city sidewalk
    And Sunday morning coming down.

    Sunday Morning Coming Down
  • Kris Kristofferson wrote this song while living in a run-down tenement in Nashville when he was working as a janitor for Columbia Records - a strange occupation considering he had a master's degree from Oxford University and risen to the rank of captain in the US Army. But Kristofferson wanted to be a songwriter, so he turned down a professor position at the US Military Academy at West Point and swept floors at Columbia waiting for his break.

In the military Kristofferson learned to fly planes and he worked as a commercial helicopter pilot in Nashville, and the story of how he got his demo tape of this song to Cash has become legend: He flew his National Guard helicopter to Cash's front yard, where he landed and delivered the tape. The story is often skewed to imply that Cash had never met Kristofferson, but they had known each other since 1965. In a 2008 interview with the San Luis Obispo Tribune, Kristofferson explained: "I knew John before then. I'd been his janitor at the recording studio, and I'd pitched him every song I ever wrote, so he knew who I was. But it was still kind of an invasion of privacy that I wouldn't recommend.

To be honest, I don't think he was there. He had a whole story about me getting out of the helicopter with a tape in one hand and a beer in the other.

John had a pretty creative memory but I would never have disputed his version of what happened because he was so responsible for any success I had as a songwriter and performer. He put me on the stage the first time I ever was, during a performance at the Newport Folk Festival."
  • This song is about a hangover, with Cash singing about "coming down" on a Sunday morning after being "stoned " on Saturday night. Many of Kris Kristofferson's songs deal with what happens after the fun, and it's usually not pretty. In this song, our hero puts on his cleanest dirty shirt, drinks a few beers, and heads out to face a lonely day.
  • This song was #1 on the Country charts for two weeks in September 1970. It was Kristofferson's first Country #1 as a writer.
  • In a 2009 Rolling Stone article about Kris Kristofferson that was written by Ethan Hawke, it explains that Kris made Johnny Cash listen to the song before removing the helicopter. After hearing it Cash said he "liked his songs so much that I would take them off and not let anybody else hear them."

Cash recorded the song live on The Johnny Cash Show, and before the show, ABC censors asked him to change the lyrics, "Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned" to "Wishing, Lord, that I was home." Cash sang it the way Kristofferson wrote it, and even stressed the word "stoned."
  • The original version of this song was recorded by Ray Stevens in 1969. At the 2009 BMI Country Awards, where Kristofferson was honored as an icon, he recalled how Stevens took a chance on his tune, when he was still an unknown songwriter. "Nobody had ever put that much money and effort into recording one of my songs," Kristofferson said. "I remember the first time I heard it - he's a wonderful singer - I had to leave the publishing house and I just sat on the steps and wept because it was such a beautiful thing."

Stevens added that he was drawn to the song because he felt Kristofferson had a "spark."

"He was very talented, very smart and right on time with his style," Stevens recalled. "A lot of people since then have copied those songs that he put out so at this point in time it doesn't seem all that different. It still is of course. There are very few writers who get that spark at the right time."

Uncut magazine commented to the Jicks frontman that the horns sound like he's got a thing for early Chicago. But I found the Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra (an online sound bank) for free on the web and bashed out an arrangement."

    Morning alone
    When you come home
    I breath a little faster
    Every time we're together
    It'd never be the same
    If you're not here
How can you stay away, away so long.

    Why can't we stay together
    Give me a reason
    Give me a reason.

    I, I don't wanna say it
I don't wanna find another way
Make it trough the day without you
    I, I can't resist
Try to find exactly what I missed
It's Just Another Day without you
    It's just another day oh

    Making the time
    Find the right lines
    To make you stay forever
What do I have to tell you

I'm just trying to hold on to something
(Trying to hold on to something good)
Oh Give us a chance to make it.
To make it no no no

Don't wanna hold on to never
    I'm not that strong
    I'm not that strong.

    I, I don't wanna say it
I don't wanna find another way
Make it trough the day without you
    I, I can't resist
