Drinking With The Jocks Lyrics

Drinking With The Jocks
  • This song finds Against Me's transgender frontwoman Laura Jane Grace detailing her attempts at camouflaging herself as a heterosexual man. She told NME: "Being in a punk band, more and more I'm in a situation where it's a bunch of dudes sitting around making homophobic comments, or being sexist or racist, and I would find myself laughing along and feeling disgusted with myself afterwards. I hope it makes people uncomfortable."
  • Grace expanded on the song's meaning to Spin magazine: "That song, in particular, was inspired by a night where I wasn't necessarily hanging out with punks," he said. "It's more self-criticism of knowing that, okay, I'm a transsexual, but no one else in this circle of people here knows that, and everyone else is laughing at faggots and everyone's being homophobic, and you're laughing along, too, and you're lying to yourself."

"It didn't necessarily have anything to do with punk rock," he added," but at the same time, just being that I've played in a punk band for as long as I have, a lot of my experiences, of course, are going to be around that world or are related to that, and I have seen an unfortunate amount of, be it sexism or homophobia or whatever, in the punk-rock world, where people are like, 'I'm not really racist, but here's a racist joke' or 'I'm not really homophobic, but here's a homophobic joke.' And it's a shame to laugh along."

    Left Outside Alone Lyrics

All my life I've been waiting
For you to bring a fairy tale my way
Been living in a fantasy without meaning
    It's not okay I don't feel safe

    Left broken empty in despair
want to breath can't find air
Thought you were sent from up above
But you and me never had love
So much more I have to say
    Help me find a way

And I wonder if you know
    How it really feels
    To be Left Outside Alone
    When it's cold out here
    Well maybe you should know
    Just how it feels
    To be left outside alone
    To be left outside alone

All my life I've been waiting
For you to bring a fairytale my way
Been living in a fantasy without meaning
    It's not okay I don't feel safe
    I need to pray

Why do you play me like a game?
    Always someone else to blame
    Careless, helpless little man
    Someday you might understand
There's not much more to say
But I hope you find a way

Still I wonder if you know
    How it really feels
    To be left outside alone
    When it's cold out here
    Well maybe you should know
    Just how it feels
    To be left outside alone
    To be left outside alone

All my life I've been waiting
For you to bring a fairytale my way
Been living in a fantasy without meaning
    It's not okay I don't feel safe

And I wonder if you know

    Left Outside Alone
  • In an interview in The Radio Times, Anastacia said: "It was one of those songs, when you work so hard at loving someone and looking after them and being their friend, and you feel like you're giving 80% and they're giving 20. You want to put the shoe on the other foot and say, 'How does it feel that I didn't return your call?'"
  • Anastacia who was born Anastacia Newkirk in 1973 in New York was raised in Chicago. Diagnosed as suffering from the chronic intestinal illness Crohn's Disease at the age of 13, she overcame the symptoms to become a dancer, appearing on Club MTV and in the Salt-N-Pepa videos for "Everybody Get Up" and "Twist And Shout." After winning through to the final of the MTV talent contest show The Cut, she was signed by Daylight Records in March 1999. 18 months later she debuted in the UK charts with "I'm Outta Love." Also in 2000 her debut album Not That Kind, was a massive success. It reached the Top 10 in 8 European and Far East countries, selling over 2 million copies. This became her biggest UK hit and topped the American Hot Dance Singles Sales chart.
  • Anastacia revealed to The Mail on Sunday's You magazine in 2015 that the lyrics were inspired by her Ukrainian father walking out on her and the rest of the family when she was a child.
  • This topped the charts in a number of countries including Austria, Australia, Italy and Switzerland.

    I'm A Boy Lyrics

One girl was called Jean Marie
    Another little girl was Felicity
Another little girl was Sally Joy
The other was me, and I'm A Boy

My name is Bill, and I'm a head case
They practice making up on my face
Yeah, I feel lucky if I get trousers to wear
Spend evenings taking hairpins from my hair

    I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
    I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But if I say I am, I get it

Put your frock on, Jean Marie
    Plait your hair, Felicity
Paint your nails, little Sally Joy
Put on this wig, little boy

    I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
    I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But if I say I am, I get it

Want to play cricket on the green
Ride my bike across the street
Cut myself and see my blood
Want to come home all covered in mud

    I'm a boy, I'm a boy
But my ma won't admit it
    I'm a boy. I'm a boy
But if I say I am, I get it

    I'm A Boy
  • This is about a boy whose mother wants him to be a girl, while the boy longs to assert his real sexual identity. The controversial subject of cross-dressing was probably the reason why this failed to reach the American Top 100.
  • Pete Townshend wrote this for a Rock Opera he was composing called "Quads," which was about a future where parents could choose the sex of their children. That opera never happened. It is possible that Townshend had his old title in mind when a few years later he came up with the title for "Quadrophenia."
  • Roger Daltrey in Q magazine March 2008: "I always thought The Who went through a weird period after 'My Generation' (November 1965) that lasted until we did 'Magic Bus' (October 1968). I thought it all went a bit sloppy. But 'I'm A Boy' and 'Pictures Of Lily' were from that period when I'd been allowed back into the band (Daltrey had been asked to leave after beating up Keith Moon over his heavy use of amphetamines). My ego had been crushed. I was insecure and it showed in my voice. When I first heard those songs, I was like, 'Oi, what's this all about?' I didn't think I could find the right voice for them. You can hear it when you listen to them now, but my insecurity made those songs sound better. It was a happy accident."
  • Daltrey told Uncut magazine: "On 'I'm A Boy', I tried to sing it like a really, really young kid, like an eight-year-old. Not the voice of an eight-year-old but the sentiment – and I think that came across."

    Two Coffins
  • Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace wrote this song for her daughter, Evelyn, who was born in 2009. "It's about mortality," she told NME. "And realizing that all the things in your life are temporary."
  • Laura Jane Grace expanded on the song to Kerrang!: "When you have a kid, all the clichés are true. It changes you. Your perspective changes immediately, and time starts to move in a different way. You have these moments of realisation about who you are, where you are in your life, your age in comparison to your parents... It's a real head trip."

"Having a kid of my own way, please see things from so many different angles, and going through having my daughter (Evelyn) while accepting gender dysphoria and dealing with it, it really take me a sense of my own mortality. It may be realise that death is real, and obviously all of us are going to confront it in our own time. It's part of life that I'm going to die someday and my daughter is going to die some day, and I hope I die before my daughter."
  • The black-and-white animated video starkly visualizes the song's themes. The clip was directed by the Verona, Italy-based animator Margherita Ballarin.

    Black Me Out Lyrics

    Black Me Out
  • Laura Jane Grace told NME: "It's an angry song, 'Write me off, f---ing forget about me.' It's really just a 'f--- off' to negative people. The 'f--- you' attitude is what attracted me to punk when I was 13 years old."
  • Do you hear a Bruce Springsteen influence in this song? Bruce does. He told NPR: "'Black Me Out,' it's a fantastic song, you know. And so, any time where you feel you may have dropped a seed or two that someone picked up in any way is, it's just a pleasure. I mean it's like, 'Oh yeah, I did that little part of my work well,' in that this was an assistance and someone went and made something beautiful of their own or crazy of their own about it or whatever, however it comes out."
  • Grace explained the song's meaning to Spin magazine: "It's an angry song," he said, "and it's about feeling like you have certain relationships in your life where you have to fake the person that you are and be inauthentic and compromise yourself to people you work with or people you see out at a bar who corner you — who make you the kind of person that you aren't, really — and feeling like you're so angry that you just want to be like blacked out from someone's existence, like, 'F---ing forget about me, don't think about me anymore, I do not exist to you anymore.' That kind of feeling."

  • For the Plugged: In Concert MTV special, Springsteen broke from their acoustic format and played electric (not quite Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival, but a statement nonetheless). Heaven's Wall Lyrics

    Heaven's Wall
  • This out and out Gospel rocker couched in Biblical language is most likely an outtake from Springsteen's proposed Gospel album, which he eventually scrapped for the more political Wrecking Ball. However, Springsteen felt it deserved a proper studio recording and gave the demo to producer Ron Aniello to play around. Aniello told Rolling Stone: "On 'Heaven's Wall' we took the basic track and jumped on there with overdubs. That's pretty much the original, vocal, drum and bass."
  • This was one of eight tracks on High Hopes that Tom Morello played on. The Rage Against The Machine guitarist also toured with the E Street Band during the Australia leg of Springsteen's Wrecking Ball World Tour. "He became a filter that I ran my music through," Springsteen told Rolling Stone. "He would send the songs back to me with a very current slant on them . . . He jolted those songs into the now. He's one of the few guitarists that creates a world by himself. It's like the Edge or Pete Townshend or Johnny Marr. The E Street Band is a big house, but when Tom is on stage he builds another room."
  • The New York Chamber Consort provided the orchestral instrumentation. The string section also played on three Wrecking Ball tracks as well as the High Hopes tunes "Dream Baby Dream" and "Just Like Fire Would."

    The Christmas Shoes Lyrics

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
    He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
    Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

    I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time

    The Christmas Shoes
  • The song tells the story of a little boy with clothes that "were worn and old" buying shoes one Christmas Eve for his sick mother so she'll look good if she "meets Jesus tonight." Founding member Eddie Carswell told us, "it was inspired by this lady who'd actually been in that situation - not exactly the way the story goes, but a very similar story."
  • The song's storyline was inspired by a Christmas story that St. Louis-based radio personality DC Chymes found on the Internet. A NewSong fan, Chymes asked Eddie Carswell to write a song based on the narrative. Eddie and his then songwriting partner Leonard Ahlstrom liked the idea and worked at it on and off for a couple of years without completing the song. "We would read this story, and we knew something was there," Eddie recalled in the band's online biography, "so we kept stabbing at it, kept coming back to it."
  • When the band was recording Sheltering Tree, Eddie pitched the unfinished song, but the producer passed on the cut. With the album complete, NewSong had a meeting with people from their Benson Records label. The suggestion was made about adding a last minute Christmas song, so Eddie played a rough version of "The Christmas Shoes". Their enthusiastic response convinced the two writers to finish the song and the record label to add it. Within a mere week, the second verse and bridge were complete, and "The Christmas Shoes" was on the album as a bonus track.
  • Benson was a Christian record label but it had a mainstream affiliate. When they played the song for their mainstream side, they immediately saw its potential. Eddie recalled to us, "First thing you know it was out and we're getting these unbelievable reports all over the country about it and about how much everybody liked it and what was going on."
  • After NewSong recorded the track, Carswell told a writer friend of his, Donna VanLiere about it. She put together a novella based on the song , which was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2002. It was later made into a TV movie for CBS, called The Christmas Shoes starring Rob Lowe and Kimberley Williams, which was the second highest-rated TV movie of the 2002-2003 seasons. VanLiere has since penned several more books that were inspired by the song, which have spawned a couple more TV movies. Eddie told us that, "it's just been a crazy thing how God's blessed that little song. Just when you think it's all over, something else happens about it. So it's been an amazing song to be a part of."
  • The Christian music group NewSong was originally a 9-member church band for Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, formed in 1983.
  • This hit the top of the Adult Contemporary chart in 3 weeks. A year later it was the title track of NewSong's holiday album.

    Avant Gardener Lyrics

    I sleep in late
    Another day
    Oh what a wonder
    Oh what a waste.
    It’s a Monday
    It’s so mundane
    What exciting things
    Will happen today?
The yard is full of hard rubbish it’s a mess and
I guess the neighbors must think we run a meth lab
    We should amend that
    I pull the sheets back
    It’s 40 degrees
And i feel like I'm dying.
    Life’s getting hard in here
    So i do some gardening
Anything to take my mind away from where it’s supposed to be.
The nice lady next door talks of green beds
And all the nice things that she wants to plant in them
I wanna grow tomatoes on the front steps.
Sunflowers, bean sprouts, sweet corn and radishes.
    I feel pro-active
    I pull out weeds
    All of a sudden
    I’m having trouble breathing in.
    I’m having trouble breathing in.
    I’m having trouble breathing in.
    I’m having trouble breathing in.

    My hands are shaky
    My knees are weak
    I can’t seem to stand
    On my own two feet
    I’m breathing but I'm wheezing
    Feel like I'm emphysemin’
My throat feels like a funnel
Filled with weet bix and kerosene and
Oh no, next thing i know
    They call up triple o
I’d rather die than owe the hospital
    Till I get old
    I get adrenalin
    Straight to the heart
    I feel like Uma Thurman
    Post-overdosing kick start
    Reminds me of the time
When i was really sick and i
Had too much psuedoefedryn and i
    Couldn’t sleep at night
Halfway down high street, Andy looks ambivalent
He’s probably wondering what i’m doing getting in an ambulance
The paramedic thinks I'm clever cos i play guitar
I think she’s clever cos she stops people dying
    Anaphylactic and super hypocondriactic
    Should’ve stayed in bed today
    I much prefer the mundane.
    I take a hit from
    An asthma puffer
    I do it wrong
I was never good at smoking bongs.
I’m not that good at breathing in.
I’m not that good at breathing in.
I’m not that good at breathing in.

    Avant Gardener
  • This song about a slacker who has a panic attack while cleaning up her yard was penned by Barnett on the beach. She told NME: "As a song I was really proud of it. But I thought everyone would hate it! Just because, aw, it's a really stupid song. It's so long and has no chorus and it's not catchy, you know?"
  • The lyrics of this half-spoken song describe an event that actually happened. Barnett was feeling ambitious one day and decided to do some gardening. It went horribly wrong when she started having trouble breathing and had a panic attack. An ambulance was called and she ended up in the hospital. She explained to Uncut magazine: "'Avant Gardener' is all true, apart from the adrenaline into the heart, like in Pulp Fiction. I just got adrenaline in the top of the thigh... But in the heart sounded so much more exciting."
  • Although this song recounts a real experience, Barnett does it with a sardonic wink, as it expresses that feeling you get when you finally find ambition and it fails miserably, making you wonder if you're better off staying in your comfort zone.
  • The music video quickly got over a million views on YouTube and led to an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The video is a non sequitur, with Barnett playing an awkward match of tennis with her band.

    Petals Lyrics

    I've often wondered if there's
    Ever been a perfect family
    I've always longed for undividedness
    And sought stability

A flower taught me how to pray
But as I grew, that flower changed
She started failing in the wind
    Like golden Petals scattering

    And I miss you dandelion
    And even love you
And I wish there was a way
    For me to trust you
But it hurts me every time
    I try to touch you

    But I miss you dandelion
    And even love you

    I gravitated towards a patriarch
    So young predictably
I was resigned to spend my life
    With a maze of misery

A boy and a girl befriended me
    We're bonded through despondency
I stayed so long but finally
I fled to save my sanity

And I miss you little sis and
    Little brother
    And I hope you realize
    I'll always love you
    (Always love you)
    And although you're struggling
    You will recover
    (We're gonna make it maybe)
And I miss you little sis and
    Little brother

    So many I considered
    Closest to me
Turned on a dime and sold me
    Out dutifully
    Although that knife was chipping
    Away at me
They turned their eyes away and
    Went home to sleep
    (Sleep)
    (Sleep)
    (Sleep)

And I missed a lot of life
    But I'll recover
Though I know you really like
    To see me suffer
Still I wish that you and I'd
    Forgive each other
    'Cause I miss you, Valentine
    And really loved you

    I really loved you
    (I guess I loved you)
    I tried so hard
    But you drove me away
    To preserve my sanity

And I found the strength to break away
    (Do do do do do)
(Do do do do do do do do)
