Was I Right Or Wrong

When Lynyrd Skynyrd started out, they recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios in Alabama, where they recorded an album in 1972 that contained this song. According to Roger Hawkins and David Hood, who were part of the Muscle Shoals rhythm section, no record company would pick up the album because the demo reel with the album somehow got flipped when it left the studio, and when Skynyd's manager played it for record executives, it sounded muffled. The band ended up recording a new version of their album in Georgia with Al Kooper, which became their 1973 debut Pronounced Leh-Nerd Skin-Nerd. "Was I Right Or Wrong" didn't appear until 1978 when the album Skynyrd's First and... Last, which contained their original Muscle Shoals recordings.

When the album Second Helping was re-released, this was added to the album.

The song is about leaving home to follow your dreams only to return to a family that is deceased. It is not a reference to Ronnie's father, Lacy Van Zant, who is often referred to as the "Father of Southern Rock."

Stand Up

This song is a bonus track on the Limited Yearbook Edition of Up All Night. It was written by Roy Stride, who is the frontman of Scouting For Girls, a group who have clocked up several Top 10 hits in their native UK, including "Elvis Ain't Dead," "Heartbeat" and the chart-topping "This Ain't A Love Song."

Stride also had a song shortlisted for 1D's third album, Midnight Memories, but it didn't make the final cut. Asked how he approaches writing a track for the biggest boyband in the world, Stride told Digital Spy : "I used to think, 'Ah, let's write a song for a boyband,' whereas now I've just realised you've got to write a f---ing good song. To get on a One Direction album - every single songwriter in the world wants to get on it - you've just got to write an absolutely amazing song. I don't think about who it's for, I've just got to write something that is amazing."

Nature Boy

This song was written by Eden Ahbez, one of the strangest songwriters of the pre-Hippie era. He was a beatnik poet, but more accurately a proto-Hippie, choosing to wear long hair, a full beard and long, white, flowing garments that promoted a Christ-like appearance. He lived in Griffith Park in Los Angeles and ate fruit, vegetables and nuts. Ahbez was born in Brooklyn in 1908, and he claimed to have been raised in an orphanage and to have crossed the US on foot 8 times before age 35. He moved to Los Angeles in the '40s, lived on 3 dollars a week, and lectured on Hollywood street corners about Oriental mysticism.

Ahbez implored Nat King Cole's manager to look at his manuscript of "Nature Boy." Cole recognized the Yiddish melody, liked the lyrics and added it to his act. It was well received so Cole decided to record it. One problem: Cole and Capitol Records could not find Ahbez in order to secure the publishing rights. Finally they located Ahbez, camped beneath the first L in the "Hollywood" sign.

Nat King Cole recorded one other Ahbez song - "Land of Love." Ahbez released his own album in 1960 called Eden's Island. He spent time with Brian Wilson before The Beach Boys recorded Pet Sounds. Ahbez, his wife, Anna, and their son Zoma lived in Griffith Park with their bicycle, sleeping bags and a juicer. With their unusual lifestyle, the family became legendary.

According to his friend Joe Romersa, Ahbez wanted to correct the last lyric. He decided that "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love and be loved in return," was not really what he wanted to say, since to be loved in return is too much of a deal and has nothing to do with love. Ahbez said that the last line should be, "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is to love, just to love, and be loved."

Paul McCartney told Mojo magazine October 2008 that "since I was a kid I'd always loved the melody and words of that song." He added: "The writer is one of these guys who came and went, a little bit of a hippy in his day. He wrote this rather strange little song when you look at the lyrics - it's rather gay! In a nice way."

This was the first song Nat King Cole recorded where he was credited as a solo artist. His previous recordings were as the King Cole Trio, where he was the piano player and lead vocalist. On "Nature Boy," he didn't play the piano, which to this point was considered his strong suit. It marked a turning point for Cole, who became known for vocal talents on songs with orchestral arrangements; his next two hits were in this style: "Mona Lisa" and "Too Young." Before Capitol Records signed Frank Sinatra, Cole was their biggest star.

David Bowie teamed up with Massive Attack to cover the song for the central theme in the Nicole Kidman movie Moulin Rouge.

I Got You Babe

Sonny Bono was an up-and-coming record producer when he got Cher a job with Phil Spector as a session singer. They started dating and moved in to their manager's house, where Bono would write songs on a piano in the garage. He came up with "I Got You Babe" and wrote the lyrics on a piece of cardboard.

Cher didn't like it at first. She recalled to Billboard magazine: "Sonny woke me up in the middle of the night to come in where the piano was, in the living room, and sing it. And I didn't like it and just said, 'OK, I'll sing it and then I'm going back to bed.'"

Sonny changed the key in the bridge to fit her voice and she loved it.

Depending on what side of the fence you stand, this is either a beautiful love song or pure schmaltz. To Sonny Bono, it was sincere - an earnest declaration of commitment and support. "The lyrics of my songs are very important to me," he told the New Musical Express in 1966. I never write anything until that very moment when I feel the emotion conveyed in the words I write. I know what it is like to be kicked around because you dress differently. I know what it is like to see the girl you love hurt because a hotel refuses you admission because of your dress. I know what it is like to have that one person stand by you. There are a lot of other people who have experienced these things and I'm trying to put our feelings into words for everyone."

Ahmet Ertegun, who was the boss at the duo's label Atco Records, didn't think much of this song, so he planned to issue it on the B-side of "It's Gonna Rain." Bono was sure "I Got You Babe" was the hit, but he couldn't convince Ertegun.

This was an era when disc jockeys could overrule record executives when it came to airplay, so Bono brought a copy of "I Got You Babe" to the Los Angeles radio station KHJ, and made a deal with their program director, Ron Jacobs. If Jacobs played the song once an hour, he could have it exclusively. When KHJ started playing it, the song got a great reaction, leading Ertegun to issue it as the A-side.

This isn't an anti-war song, but it went over well with the Hippie crowd because it stuck up for guys with long hair when Cher sang, "Let them say your hair's too long, I don't care, with you I can't go wrong."

In 1985, UB40 covered this with Chrissie Hynde doing the female vocals. Their version hit #1 in the UK and #28 in the US. Sonny & Cher's original version was the first record UB40's Ali Campbell ever owned.

In 1994 Cher re-recorded this with the cartoon characters Beavis and Butthead. This version hit #35 in the UK.

Bob Dylan's use of the word "Babe" in his 1964 song "It Ain't Me Babe" gave Sonny Bono the idea to use it in this song.

In the 1993 film Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray, Murray's character is awakened to this song every morning at precisely 6:00 a.m. on the alarm clock in his hotel room.

Sonny and Cher performed this one last time when they appeared on the The David Letterman show in 1987. They didn't expect to sing, but the host cajoled them until they did song. Sonny and Cher put their differences aside and did a touching performance.

Sonny Bono is the only person to perform on a #1 hit and also serve in congress. He was elected to California's 44th district in 1994, and served there until his death.

This song has a very sad background: A close friend of the Pet Shop Boys lost his lover who committed suicide. The man found it very difficult to forget his lover and the good times they both had together. He told the group that he keeps thinking and dreaming of his dead friend and suddenly he feels that miraculous things happen in his mind because of the presence of the dead friend. This song finds Odell singing about the realization that something he loves is over. Like the other tracks on his Long Way Down album, it is autobiographical. He told Q magazine: "I want to write songs people can relate to. I want people to cry, or be in ecstasy. So it has to be real."

The video was filmed by Magnus Harder in Mörkö (the 'dark island') just south of Stockholm, Sweden. Harder explained: "We wanted to shoot a stripped down performance piece on Tom in some moody Scandinavian light. This is a track from the The Grohl Sessions Vol. 1 EP. The four songs were produced by Dave Grohl, and also feature the Foo Fighter frontman on drums. Brown first met Grohl while picking up his Grammys outfit at a John Varvatos store in West Hollywood. The former Nirvana stickman and the country star bonded over an interest in analog equipment and a friendship developed. in early November 2013, Grohl flew out to Nashville to record with the band. "I don't know how I tricked him into working with us, but it's really cool," Brown said.

Brown explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Grohl had not heard of his Zac Brown Band when they first met. "They just know we've had some songs on country radio," the Nashville frontman said. "And while we've got a great foothold in country music, that doesn't encompass everything we do."

"Dave Grohl's street credit and the energy that was brought into these recording sessions, it's a big deal for us," he added. "I feel like it's kind of the tipping point."

Grohl and the Zac Brown Band took time out from their recording to perform this song at the Country Music Awards.

Grohl charmingly said that he was flattered that his name was being used as the record title. "He told me he wanted to call it The Grohl Sessions and I said, 'Dude, are you sure you want to do it?' It's the most flattering thing anyone has ever done for me," said the Foo frontman. "It's going to be really weird to click on iTunes and see a recording called The Grohl Sessions."
