No One Likes a Fat Pop Star Lyrics

No One Likes a Fat Pop Star
  • This lighthearted song is a riposte to the tabloids' reporting of Williams' battles with weight problems. In the middle of the singer's Take the Crown tour, a newspaper printed some really unflattering pictures of him performing.
  • The song includes a verse where Williams sings, operatically,

"Now you've upset me I feel like a snack.
A packet of Minstrels, a pie and a nap
    So what's wrong with that?"

"Fat Pop Star started as a joke," co-writer Guy Chambers told The Daily Telegraph. "I came up with the chorus melody, which is very operatic, and Rob can really sing that kind of music. When we performed it for the first time the whole crowd spontaneously stood up and started clapping. It was great seeing the shock of the public following that lyric and to hear him singing like Pavarotti."

    Bust A Move Lyrics

This here's a tale for all the fellas
Tryin' to do what those ladies tell us
Get shot down cause ya over-zealous
Play hard to get females get jealous
Okay smarty go to a party
Girls are scantily clad and showin' body
A chick walks by you wish you could sex her
But you're standing on the wall like you was Poindexter
Next days function high class luncheon
Food is served and you're stone-cold munchin'
Music comes on people start to dance
But then you ate so much you nearly split your pants
A girl starts walking guys start gawking
Sits down next to you and starts talking
Says she wants to dance cause she likes to groove
So come on fatso and just Bust A Move

    Just bust a move

You're on a mission and your wishin'
Someone could cure your lonely condition
Lookin' for love in all the wrong places
No fine girls just ugly faces
    From frustration first inclination
Is to become a monk and leave the situation
But every dark tunnel has a light of hope
So don't hang yourself, with a celibate rope
Your movie's showin', so you're goin'
Could care less about the five you're blowin'
Theater gets dark just to start the show
Then ya spot a fine woman sittin' in your row
She's dressed in yellow, she says "Hello,
come sit next to me you fine fellow."
You run over there without a second to lose
And what comes next hey bust a move

You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)
You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it

In this city ladies look pretty
Guys tell jokes so they can seem witty
Tell a funny joke just to get some play
Then you try to make a move and she says, "No way"
    Girls are fakin' goodness sakin'
They want the man who brings home the bacon
Got no money and you got no car
Then you got no women and there you are
    Some girls are sadistic, materialistic
Lookin' for a man makes them opportunistic
They're lyin' on a beach perpetrating a tan
So a brother with the money can be their man
So on the beach you're strollin' real high rollin'
Everything you have is yours and not stolen
A girl runs up with somethin' to prove
So don't just stand there bust a move

If you want it, you got it
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)
You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it (Break it down for me fellas)

Your best friend Harry has a brother Larry
In five days from now he's gonna marry
He's hopin' you can make it there if you can
'Cause in the ceremony you'll be the best man
You say neat-o, check your libido
And roll to the church in your new tuxedo
The bride walks down just to start the wedding
And there's one more girl you won't be getting
So you start thinkin' then you start blinking
The bridesmaid looks and thinks that you're winking
She thinks your kinda cute so she winks back
And now your feelin' really firm 'cause the girl is stacked
    Reception's jumpin' bass is pumpin'
You look at the girl and your heart starts thumpin'
Says she wants to dance to a different groove
Now you know what to do G bust a move

If you want it, you got it
You want it, baby you got it (Just bust a move)
You want it, you got it,
You want it, baby you got it (Break it down for me fellas)

    Bust A Move
  • We can thank Young MC for popularizing the phrase "Bust A Move," which means to take action of some kind. The song follows a guy who seems hapless with women, but somehow keeps getting lucky. In the first first, he busts a move by dancing with a girl who shows interest. Later, he considers becoming a monk but meets a girl in a movie theater. At the end of the song, he's the best man at a wedding, and when a bridesmaid shows interest, he gets to bust a different kind of move when she wants to "dance to a different groove." It's all good fun, and it helped make rap music acceptable for a much wider audience.
  • Flea from The Red hot Chili Peppers played bass on this song and appeared in the video, but he didn't reap the rewards. He explained to Bass Player magazine: "I have a bitter taste in my mouth about that, because I feel as though I got ripped off. The bass line I wrote ended up being a major melody of the tune, and I felt I deserved songwriting credit and money because it was a #1 hit. They sold millions of records, and I got $200! Afterwards, my lawyer told them, 'You should throw down Flea some cash,' but the record company said, 'We told him exactly what to play.' No one was even in the room at the time but me and the engineer! It was ridiculous, but I learned from it."
  • Young MC's real name is Marvin Young. He wrote this and also composed Tone Loc's hits "Wild Thing" and "Funky Cold Medina."
  • This was Young MC's only big hit, although he did have another US Top 40 with "Principal's Office." He was one of the first to write catchy, fun rap songs that crossed over to the world of Pop. Young MC recalled to Rolling Stone: "People looked at rap and hard rock as the type of music that you slam your door after you argue with your parents, and bang your head in defiance. My record wasn't necessarily rebellious, but it was clever enough to grab in a decent segment of people that didn't listen to rap music."
  • This won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance. It was only the second year the category existed, and the next year it was eliminated to recognize Rap Solo and Rap Duo Or Group performances. The previous years' winner was DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince for "Parents Just Don't Understand."
  • The main sample in this song is a loop from a song called "Found A Child" by a Seattle Funk group called Ballin' Jack. Their song came out in 1970, and it's amazing that it took 19 years for a rapper to boost it - the 15 seconds of bass, drums and vocal stabs on the song makes a perfect foundation for a rap hit in an era when sampling was widespread.
  • Young MC performs this in the film Up In The Air, where George Clooney plays a guy who is constantly traveling. Clooney crashes a convention at the hotel where he's staying, and Young MC is the performer. These private functions are lucrative gigs for artists who have fallen out of the spotlight (and for some still in it), but they are rarely portrayed in movies.
  • A bunch of commercials have featured this song. Among them, a 2013 spot for Payday candy bars, an Old Navy commercial that same year ("Bust in to Old Navy's huge gift sale...") and a 2014 commercial for Southwest Airlines that shows a woman dancing to the song at a wedding.
  • In the 2016 episode of The Big Bang Theory, "The Positive Negative Reaction," the characters Raj and Leonard sing this in karaoke. A tipsy Sheldon proclaims, "I'm being musically encouraged to bust a move. If I knew what that meant, I might just do it."

    Swings Both Ways Lyrics

    Swings Both Ways
  • This is the title track of Robbie Williams' second Swing album. The British singer previously released a similarly flavored record in 2001 with Swing When You're Winning. Williams' love of Swing is not an affectation; the former Take That singer has always listened to the Jazz genre because his father was a fan. "It's very camomile, isn't it? I suppose it was a safe place when I was growing up," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Also my dad left a load of records when he left home – all these brilliantly crafted standards. Nat King Cole was his favourite. And I've always been in love with Dean Martin. And Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Tormé, and of course, Frank."
  • The song is a duet with Rufus Wainwright, who is also a fan of the swing era. The openly gay American singer recorded an entire album of songs made famous by Judy Garland. The pair met through Williams' songwriter partner Chambers, who was working on Wainwright's album at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in LA. "I had a week with Rufus on my own," Chambers told The Daily Telegraph. "I knew he had a big crush on Rob and wanted to meet him, and Rob is a fan of Rufus and has covered one of his songs. We had dinner together and we wrote 'Swings Both Ways' the following afternoon."
  • The tongue-in-cheek lyrics were influenced from the time Robbie joined Take That as a 16-year-old. He recalled to The Sun: "When I joined Take That, we toured gay clubs for 18 months. It always used to confuse me and make me laugh when a lot of the gay people I was hanging out with were insistent that everybody was gay. (Adopting a camp voice) 'Oh, well you know about her.' 'What?' 'Oh, yes... definitely. And she helps out when the team's short – do you know what I mean?'"

"According to my manager at the time, I definitely swung both ways," Williams continued. "And I wouldn't judge anybody for judging us back then. So for me, the start of the song was a homage to being a teenager in those clubs and being told, 'oh yes, everybody's gay. Everybody swings both ways.' I'm really proud of that song."
  • So does Robbie actually swing both ways? "I have a lot of gay friends,' Chambers told The Daily Telegraph, "and a typical question is, 'Is Rob a little bit… or is he actually?' and I always say the same thing, which is, 'No, I' ve never seen any evidence of it.' But he likes playing with the ambiguity."
  • Williams and Wainwright recorded the song at Abbey Road Studios with an 80-piece orchestra.
  • Swings Both Ways was the 1,000th #1 album in the history of the UK charts. The Swing theme of the set is appropriate, since Frank Sinatra topped the first UK album chart in July 1956 with Songs For Swingin' Lovers. Williams said the fact that both the first and 1,000th chart-topper was a swing album showed the genre's long-lasting appeal. "I think in these days, with people taking their clothes off and doing drugs and being cynical in whatever way possible to get attention, and good luck to them, I think there is a market for middle-of-the-road entertainment," he said. "It harks back to a simpler time."

    My Name Lyrics

It's cold in here feels like everything's upside down
I can feel you talking but I can barley make out the sound
I been kicking around these parts, feels like a year
I'm gonna change this world if I ever get out of here
She wants to dress me in pink, paints my bedroom blue
And I just laugh to myself, 'cause only I know the truth
This love is my only emotion
Haven't learned any fear any pain
It's kind of funny with all this commotion
I guess they've got me to blame
And they don't even know My Name
They don't even know my name

Well I've never felt so ready, think it's finally time
'Cause that big old world is waiting, and it's mine all mine
Just then everything got real quiet, it got real bright
And a man took my hand said don't worry, your momma's gonna be alright
Then he opened the gate and I followed him in
Said you can wait right here, 'til it's your turn again
And his love is the one true emotion
Heaven knows no fear no pain
I never got to set my wheels in motion
They loved me just the same
And they didn't even know name
    Didn't even know my name
You loved me just the same
And you didn't even know my name

    My Name
  • This song is about a baby inside the mother's womb. The baby is expressing his/her only emotion - love - and what it feels like to be on the inside. Then the baby talks about being born and how he/she takes God's hand and leaves for heaven. The baby knows his/her parents love the baby just the same even though they had never and may never meet. Basically, it's about parents who experience a miscarriage or a still birth.

Get Me Some of That Lyrics

Yeah girl, been diggin' on you
    Sippin' on drink number two
Tryin' to come up with somethin' smooth
And waitin' on the right time to make my move
But I just can't wait no more
Can't let you slip out that door
Prettiest thing I ever seen before
Got me spinnin' around, I ain't even on the dance floor

You're shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later
I never seen nothin' that I wanted so bad
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta Get Me Some of That
Yeah gotta get me some of that

Little more what you doin' right there
Swingin' your hips and slingin' your hair
Side to side with your drink in the air
Lord have mercy now girl I swear
Gotta get your number in my phone
Gotta get me some of of you alone
We can worry 'bout it later on
Right now keep makin' this my favorite song

You're shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight
I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later
I never seen nothin' that I wanted so bad
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta get me some of that
    Some of that
Yeah, gotta get me some of that

In my ride, by my side, down the highway
In the dark, in my arms, in your driveway
All because of that smile you threw my way
Yeah girl you got a way of

Shakin' that money maker, like a heart breaker, like your college major was
Twistin' and tearin' up Friday nights
Love the way you're wearin' those jeans so tight

    Get Me Some of That
  • Thomas' father Rhett Akins teamed up with Michael Carter and Cole Swindell to write this song. The narrator uses a popular expression to describe his desire to pick up a girl. He sings:

"I bet your kiss is a soul saver, my favorite flavor, want it now and later.
I never seen nothin' I wanted so bad.
Girl, I gotta get me, gotta get me some of that."

Thomas said in a cut by cut just before the release of It Goes Likes This: "I did not write this song, but the reason I recorded it was because of the catchy melody it has. I can' t wait for everyone to hear it on the record. It's also one of the most recent ones I cut for the record and I think everyone will want to shake their money-maker on this one."
  • The music video, which follows two people as they fall in love at a party, was directed by TK McKamy, who also worked with Rhett on his visual for "It Goes Like This." Rhett's wife (Lauren Gregory Akins) has a role when at the end of the clip when the singer notices her from across the room.
  • Rhett Atkins told the story of the song to Roughstock : "I had been friends with Cole and Michael for a long time," he recalled. "My association with Luke (Laird, producer) is how I met those guys. Actually, Cole used to open for me around 2008/2009 when I'd play in college towns in Georgia. Cole would open and do a little acoustic set before I played. I knew Cole from back then, and I knew Michael from Luke. They write for Sony, who I write for, and we'd been talking about it for a while … how we need to get together and do something. They had written a few Spring Break songs with Luke, and then they had Craig Campbell's single ('Outta My Head'). Then they started getting cuts on Luke's Crash My Party record. So we all got together. "

"Cole and Michael played me the first three lines of the chorus," Akins continued. "They said we just kind of came up with this out on the road with Luke this weekend, but that's all we have. When they played me those lines, I was like I'm in -- big time! That sounds like a smash. We just sat there and hammered it out for the rest of the afternoon. Then we went and demoed it a week later."
  • This wasn't specifically written for Thomas Rhett. "We thought his record was done," Akins told Roughstock. "We pitched it to a few people, and they passed on it, just like 'It Goes Like This' was passed on by some pretty big artists. We were scratching our heads going we think this song is so awesome, so why is it being passed on? I think it's just one of those things where a song is meant to be where it's meant to be. Both of these songs I truly believe were meant for Thomas Rhett. I think that's why they were both passed on by a bunch of people. I sent it to him, and he called me saying, 'Dad, I'm cutting that! That's a smash!' He went in and cut it with Luke Laird, and they just killed it. It sounds great. Thomas Rhett sounds great. It's fun. It gets you moving. I think it's exactly what Thomas Rhett needed for his follow-up single to 'It Goes Like This.'"

It's the same sound... it's the same, same... sound....

  • A hexagram is a potent symbol of the macrocosm (God, the Universe or Higher Energies) and of the relationship between the macrocosm and the microcosm (Humankind, the Earth or Manifest Energies). In its regular form, it is drawn as two intersecting equilateral triangles, and is most commonly seen as the Judaic Star of David.

  • Chris Cornell recorded this song for the soundtrack of the pre-Civil War film 12 Years a Slave. The movie tells the true story of Solomon Northrup, an African American freeman from the North who was abducted and sold into slavery. "I was moved by this film and the story in a way that transcends any film experience I have ever had," said Cornell. "I was inspired to write a hundred different songs, but finally landed on one based on what I believe is an extremely important message I took from this man's journey. Compassion, basic human rights and love must be our priorities above race, religion or commerce. Every generation needs a reminder of that simple idea."

(Conceived) Give me your hand (and born was one of light)
Blood is spilt and man will follow (Rain and dark)
Infernal man,(rain and dark, the other born black night) punishment too great to bear

Raise your head and taste the courage (the one of light)
    Fall from grace, unholy night
I've come here to kill you
    Won't leave until you've died
    Murder born of vengeance
I closed my brothers eyes tonight

(Conceived) Give me your hand (and born was one of light)

It's cold tonight as the clouds turn gray
And from my hands to my brothers grave
You took his side, you took his gift
Feel the power of a fallen man, crestfallen man

Far away in this land I must go
Out of the site of the One
A punishment sent from his hand
A hardship no one should know
Now go out of the site of the one
Away in this land you must go

(Oh oh oh) Where has he gone? What have you done?

From the soil his blood cries out to me

Lyrics licensed and provided by LyricFind

    By And Down
  • This is the one new recording from A Perfect Circle's greatest hits compilation, Three Sixty. It was the band's first fresh song to appear in nearly a decade. The five-minute cut was written during the band's live re-emergences in the early 2010s and was first debuted as far back as June 2011, when the band played it live at their North American Summer tour. Frontman Maynard James Keenan told Artist Direct the song evolved in its live setting. "That's always going to happen when you have a song that you've rehearsed in a square room," he said. "When you get on stage, you feel a push and pull. You need to nudge this part a little harder and you need to get a little quieter on this part. All of those things evolve as you tour, I'd have to say with every song, that's the case. I think they're going to slowly evolve as you do them. For the most part, that song has remained fairly pure from its inception. Because of the experience we've had in the past on the road, I feel like we can kind of predict where that might go."
  • Guitarist Billy Howerdel told Billboard magazine that laying down this song in the studio proved to be a challenge, especially since the band hadn't recorded any new material since 2004's eMOTIVe. "I kind of underestimated what it would take to do it because we had played it live so many times,"Howerdel said. "The song was pretty realized, and I knew what it was gonna be. But just like anything else in the studio, just because you know the notes doesn't mean you know how the production's gonna go down. It took awhile to craft it into a proper studio recording that you were gonna be proud enough to release. Once I was in the middle of it, it did feel like familiar ground again to do that, but it definitely takes a little while to get back on the horse."
  • The song can also be found on the "Stone and Echo" volume of the band's 2013 limited edition live box set, recorded during an Aug. 11, 2011 show at Red Rocks Amphitheater near Denver.
  • The music originated from Howerdel playing around with his three-year old. The guitarist recalled to Rock Revolt Magazine : "He was playing piano, banging around on the keyboard, and I was just trying to play a melody to help have him follow along with, (use one finger instead of pounding with your fist), and the melody of 'By And Down' just came out of that. I hit record on my phone, recorded the beginnings of that, the chord structure, kicked my three-year old out of the room, probably put him in front of the Wiggles or something like that on TV, and got to work on the song."

    California Über Alles Lyrics

    I am Governor Jerry Brown
    My aura smiles
    And never frowns
    Soon I will be president

Carter power will soon go away
I will be FÁ¼hrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school

    California Á?ber Alles
    Á?ber Alles California

    Zen fascists will control you
    A hundred percent natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face
Close your eyes, can't happen here
Big Bro' on white horse is near
The hippies won't come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay

    California Á?ber Alles
    Á?ber Alles California

    Now it is 1984
Knock knock at your front door
    It's the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

    Come quietly to the camp
You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp
    Don't you worry, it's only a shower
    For your clothes here's a pretty flowerâ?¦

    Die on organic poison gas
    Serpent's egg's already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown

    California Über Alles
  • This is about then-Governor of California Jerry Brown, and is sung from his perspective. In the song, an imaginary President Brown outlines his hippie/zen/fascist vision of America.
  • "Über Alles" is a German phrase meaning "above all else." It was part of the German national anthem until the end of World War II, and is closely associated with the Nazis.
  • In 1984, the Dead Kennedys released a sequel to this song on their album In God We Trust, Inc., which is about then-president Ronald Reagan, who preceded Brown as Governor of California. This update - which is done in jazz/lounge style for most of the song - is called "We've Got A Bigger Problem Now."

In our interview with Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra , he said: "I realized I was wrong about my conspiracy theory about Jerry Brown. Sure, I'd made it up all by myself and it turned out not to be true, so it was updated with Reagan lyrics until 'We've Got A Bigger Problem Now,' and the jazz version we goofed off with at sound check wound up becoming a staple of that record and the live show."
  • This was the Dead Kennedys first single. The band formed in San Francisco in 1978, but took their cue from the anarchist punk that was coming out of England. (Lead singer Jello Biafra is from Boulder, a bucolic city in Colorado that seems an unlikely place for an uprising. He claims that he somehow got his hands on an import of the Sex Pistols single "Anarchy in the U.K.," which set him on his path.)

"California Über Alles" set the provocative tone that would become the group's prime directive: upsetting the establishment. They quickly built up a following with their chaotic live shows and shocking songs like "Kill The Poor" and "Holiday In Cambodia."
  • The group released this song on their own independent record label, Alternative Tentacles, in 1979. Bob Last, the head of a British label called Fast Product, head the group when he was vacationing in New York City, and signed a deal with the band to distribute "California Über Alles" in the UK. The song got the attention of the influential BBC DJ John Peel, who played the song on his show, boosting the band's fortunes considerably.

The group then signed a one-year deal with a large independent label called Cherry Red Records, which issued the Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables album in 1980. After the year, the band was back on their own, using Alternative Tentacles to peddle their goods.
  • Jello Biafra wrote this song with his friend John Greenway; they were in a band called The Healers at the time and performed this song with that group.
  • When Arnold Schwarzenegger took over as Governor of California, Jello Biafra couldn't resist a new update of this song. The result was "Kali-Fornia Über Alles 21st Century," which he recorded with the Melvins and released in 2005. He told us: "How can you drop a song that has lines like 'Steroids for the master race, So you all can have my face?'"
  • This looks like a good place to mention somebody else who had a dark view of California: Al Kooper in Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards says, "The New York sensibility has always regarded California with suspicion. If your system is geared to New York's nonstop adrenaline rush, the relaxed California life-style can seem as if you're playing a 45 RPM record at 33(1/3). Usually, if New Yorkers follow that slow a pace, they move to Florida."

Kooper also relates the experience of staying at a friend's house which was actually a disgusting bug-ridden crash pad, and visiting another friend who, although rich, was too stoned to notice that he was eating dog food. Together, these experiences gave him an impression that California is depressing.

    High Hopes Lyrics

Monday morning runs to Sunday night
Screaming slow me down before the new year dies
Well it won't take much to kill a loving smile
And every mother with a baby crying in her arms, singing
Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
    Got High Hopes
    I got high hopes
    Got high hopes
    I got high hopes

Coming from the city, coming from the wild
I see a breathless army breaking like a cloud
They're gonna smother love, they're gonna shoot your hopes
Before the meek inherit they'll learn to hate themselves
Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
    Got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    I got high hopes

Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
    I got high hopes
    Got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    Got high hopes

Tell me someone now, what's the price
I wanna buy some time and maybe live my life
I wanna have a wife, I wanna have some kids
I wanna look in their eyes and know they'll stand a chance

Give me help, give me strength
Give a soul a night of fearless sleep
Give me love, give me peace
Don't you know these days you pay for everything
    I got high hopes
    Got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    Got high hopes

    Got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    I got high hopes
    I got high hopes

    High Hopes
  • This song was written by Tim Scott McConnell in 1987 and originally appeared three years later on the debut album by his band, The Havalinas. The track was incorporated into the 1996 documentary film Blood Brothers, which chronicles Springsteen's reunion with the E Street Band and its hard-to-find accompanying EP.
  • This new version was performed by the The E Street Band with Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello during a tour of Australia in March 2013 and recorded during The Boss' dates Down Under. Springsteen told Rolling Stone that he broke the habit of a lifetime when laying the song down. "We've never had a recording session during a tour in our lives," he said. "We did a couple of things that I wanted to put down. So that was very exciting. And being with Tommy was exciting. The band - Steven, Nils, all those guys - continues to be a source of inspiration for me."
  • Springsteen said regarding the cutting of the song: "I was working on a record of some of our best unreleased material from the past decade when Tom Morello (sitting in for Steve Van Zandt during the Australian leg of our tour) suggested we ought to add 'High Hopes' to our live set. I had cut 'High Hopes," a song by Tim Scott McConnell of the LA based Havalinas, in the '90s. We worked it up in our Aussie rehearsals and Tom then proceeded to burn the house down with it. We re-cut it mid tour at Studios 301 in Sydney along with 'Just Like Fire Would.'"
  • Tom Morello was driving around Los Angeles in late 2012 when Springsteen's 1996 song came on E Street Radio, the SiriusXM channel devoted to The Boss. "I was reminded what a jam it was," he recalled to Rolling Stone. "In the middle of the night, I texted Bruce and said, 'What do you think about 'High Hopes' for the tour?' He agreed we should put it in the set." Little did Morello realize that a new version of of the song would become the title track and lead single of Springsteen's eighteenth studio album.
  • This was one of three songs from High Hopes (along with "The Ghost Of Tom Joad" and "Hunter Of Invisible Game") that were played in part on the January 12, 2014 episode of the television series, The Good Wife.

You Get What You Give Lyrics

    1, 2,
    1, 2, 3

    Wake up kids
    We've got the dreamers disease
Age 14 we got you down on your knees
So polite, you're busy still saying please
Frienemies, who when you're down ain't your friend
Every night we smash their Mercedes-Benz
First we run, and then we laugh 'til we cry

But when the night is falling
    You cannot find the light
You feel your dreams are dying
    Hold tight

You've got the music in you
    Don't let go
You've got the music in you
    One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
    Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
    Can't forget
We only get what we give

    I'm comin' home baby
    You're tops,
    Give it to me now

Four a.m. We ran a miracle mile
    We're flat broke,
But hey we do it in style
    The bad rich
God's flying in for your trial

But when the night is falling
You cannot find a friend (friend)
You feel your tree is breaking
    Just then

You've got the music in you
    Don't let go
You've got the music in you
    One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
    Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
    Can't forget
We only get what we give

This whole damn world, could fall apart
You'll be ok, follow your heart
You're in harms way, I'm right behind
    Now say you're mine

You've got the music in you
    Don't let go
You've got the music in you
    One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
    Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
    Can't forget
We only get what we give

    Don't let go
I feel the music in you
    Don't let go
    Fly high, high

    What's real, can't die
You only get what you give
You only get what you give
    Don't give up
Just don't be afraid to leave
Health insurance rip off lying FDA big bankers buying
    Fake computer crashes dining
    Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with Beck and Hanson
    Courtney Love, and Marilyn Manson
    You're all fakes
    Run to your mansions
    Come around
    We'll kick your ass in
    Don't let go
    One dance left
    Don't give up
    Can't forget

    You Get What You Give
  • Singer/Songwriter Gregg Alexander wrote this about people who aspire to be famous, and his cynicism toward the world of "celebrity." He's saying that people should just be themselves instead of aspiring to be someone else.
  • The closing lyrics of this song caused controversy as they accused Marilyn Monroe, Beck, Courtney Love and Hanson of being fakes and that the New Radicals will "kick their ass in." Apparently not all of these artist held a grudge: Hanson collaborated with Gregg Alexander on their song "Lost Without Each Other" on the Underneath CD.
  • The video was shot at a shopping mall in New York because Gregg Alexander said it epitomized society's fake culture of encouraging people to spend.
  • Since disbanding the group in summer 1999, Alexander has written songs for the likes of Sophie Ellis Bextor, Ronan Keating, Mel C and Enrique Iglesias. His most well known composition is probably "The Game Of Love" by Santana and Michelle Branch, which earned a Grammy in 2003.
  • This was used on the end credits for the 2006 Adam Sandler film Click.
  • In the September 25, 2006 edition of Time magazine, U2 guitarist The Edge said that this is the song he is most jealous of.
  • This is the first hit song to use the word "Frenemies" in the lyrics: "Frenemies, who when you're down ain't your friend." The word started showing up in the late '90s to explain those weird relationships where you could be both friends and enemies with someone at the same time, depending on the situation. "Frenemies" became the title of a book in 2007 and a movie in 2012, but many of us heard it for the first time courtesy of The New Radicals.
