Rhyme Or Reason Lyrics

(What's your name?) Marshall
(Who's your daddy?) I don't have one

My mother reproduced like a komodo dragon
And had me on the back of a motorcycle
Then crashed in the side of loco-motive with rap, I'm loco
It's like handing a psycho a loaded handgun
Michelangelo with a paint gun in a tantrum
About to explode all over the canvas
Back with the Yoda of rap in a spasm
(Your music usually has them)
(But waned for the game your enthusiasm it hasn't)
(Follow you must, Rick Rubin my little Padawan)
A Jedi in training, colossal brain and, thoughts of entertaining
But docile and impossible to explain and, I'm also vain and
Probably find a way to complain about a Picasso painting
Puke Skywalker, but sound like Chewbacca when I talk
Full of such blind rage I need a seeing eye dog
Can't even find the page, I was writing this rhyme on
Oh, it's on a rampage, couldn't see what I wrote I write small
It says ever since I drove a 79 Lincoln with white walls
Had a fire in my heart, and a dire desire to aspire, to Die Hard
So as long as I'm on the clock punching this time card
Hip hop ain't dying on my watch

But sometimes, when I'm sleeping, she comes to me in my dreams
Is she taken? Is she mine? Don't got, don't care, don't have two shits to give
Let me take you by the hand to promise land
And threaten everyone, cause there's no rhyme or no reason for nothing

(Whats your name?) Marshall
(Who's your daddy?) I don’t know him, but I wonder
(Is he rich like me?) Ha-ha
(Has he taken, any time, to show you what you need to live?)

No! If he had, he wouldn’t have ended up in these rhymes on my pad
I wouldn’t be so mad, my attitude wouldn’t be so bad, yeah, dad
I'm The epitome and the prime example of what happens
When the power of the rhyme falls into the wrong hands, and
Makes you want to get up and start dancing
Even if it is Charles Manson who just happens, To be rapping
Blue lights flashing, laughing all the way to the bank
Lamping in my K-Mart mansion, I’m in the style department
With a pile in my car, ripping the aisle apart
With great power comes absolutely no responsibility, for content
Completely, despondent, and condescending
The king of nonsense and controversy is on, a
Beat killing spree, your honor, I must, plea
Guilty, cause I sparked a, Revolution
Rebel without a cause, who caused the evolution of rap
To take it to the next level, boost it
But several rebuked it, and whoever produced it
(Hip hop is the devil's music) Is that me? It belongs to me?
'Cause I just happen to be, a white honky devil with two horns
That don't honk but every time I speak you, hear a beep?
But lyrically I never hear a peep, not even a whisper
Rappers better stay clear of me, bitch
Cause its the…

It's the time of the season, when hate runs high
And this time, give it to you easy, when I take back what's mine
With pleasured hands, and torture everyone, that is my plan
My job here isn't done, cause there's no rhyme or no reason for nothing

(What's your name?) Shady
(Who's your daddy?) I don’t give a fuck, but I wonder
(Is he rich like me?) Doubt it, ha
(Has he taken, any time, to show you what you need to live?)

So yeah dad let's walk
Let's have us a father and son talk
But I bet we probably wouldn't get one block
Without me knocking your block off
This is all your fault
Maybe that's why I'm always so bananas
I appeal to all those walks of like
Whoever had strife
Maybe that's what dad and son talks are like
Cause I related to the struggles of young America
When their fucking parents were unaware of their troubles
Now they're ripping out their fucking hair again
It's a stare ruckle, I chuckle
Cause everybody bloodies their bare knuckles
Yeah, uh oh, better beware knuckleheads
The sound of my hustle says don't knock
The doors broken, it won't lock
It might just fly open, get cold cocked
You critics come pay me a visit
Misery loves company, please stay a minute
Kryptonite to a hypocrite
Zip your lip if you dish it but can't take it
Too busy getting stoned in your glass house
To kick rocks, then you wonder why I lash out
Mister Mathers as advertised on the flyers
So spread the word cause I'm promoting my passion til I'm passed out
A completely brain dead Rainman
Doing a bankhead in a restraint chair
So bitch, if you shoot me a look it better be a blank stare
Or get shanked in the pancreas, I'm angrier than
All 8 of the reindeer put together with Chief Keef
Cause I hate every fucking thing, yeah
Even this rhyme bitch, and quit tryna look
For a fucking reason for it that ain't there
But I still am a criminal
Ten year old degenerate grabbing on my genitals
The last Mathers LP that went diamond
This time I'm predicting this one will go emerald
When will the madness end, how can it when
There's no method to the pad and pen
The only message that I have to sing is
Dad, I'm back at it again
Bitch

Rhyme Or Reason
  • This song finds Eminem twisting English rock band The Zombies' 1968 hit single "Time Of The Season" into a sad ballad that touches on the disappearance of his father. The Zombies' Rod Argent told Rolling Stone that he is very pleased with how the Detroit MC sampled their tune. "I actually loved it," he said. "I loved the way he takes words and phrases from the original record and then spins off of the particular phrases. It kicks him off onto an avalanche of funny wordplay and invention. It's very amusing. It's a waterfall of words, and the associations just keep coming."
  • The song was produced by Rick Rubin, who Eminem refers to as the "Yoda of rap" (Yoda is one of the oldest and most respected Jedi knights in the Star Wars movie series). Speaking during a Q&A session mediated by Sway Calloway, Eminem explained that he calls Rubin "Yoda," because of the legendary producer's amazing ability to work across, and master, so many musical genres.
  • The phrase neither rhyme or reason refers to something with an absence of sense, from both a poetic and logical standpoint. The term originated in France where it was said that because a piece of badly rhymed verse is at best distracting and at worst nonsensical, such poor poetry was "sans rime ni raison.'' The first English recording was by John Russell, in The Boke of Nurture, c1460:

"As for ryme or reson, ye forewryter was not to blame,
For as he founde hit afore hym, so wrote he ye same."

    Be For Real Lyrics

Are you back in my life to stay
Or is it just for today
    Oh that you need me
If its a thrill you're lookin for
    Well honey I am flexible
    Oh yeah
    Just....
    Be For Real
    Won't you baby
    Be for real
    Won't you baby
You see I, I don't want, to be hurt by love again
You can understand baby, can't you?
Now you see I am not naive
But I would like to believe
    Oh what you tell me
So don't give me the world today
And then tomorrow take it away
Don't do that to me darling
    No....
    Be for real
    Won't you baby
    Be for real
    Won't you baby
You see I, I don't want, to be hurt by love again
    Be for real
    Won't you baby
    Be for real
    Won't you baby
You see I, I don't want, to be hurt by love again
Because I, don't want, to be hurt by love again

    Stronger Than I Was Lyrics

You used to say that I'd never be nothing without you
    And I believe I'm striding the roads, I guess I can't breathe
Just lay here with me, baby, hold me please
And I beg and I plead, drop to knees
And I cry and I'd scream, baby, please don't leave
Snatch the keys from your hand
I would squeeze and you'd laugh
And you'd tease, you're just fucking with me
    And you must hate me
Why do you date me if you say I make you sick?
And you've had enough of me
I smother you, I'm 'bout to jump off the edge

    But you won't break me
You'll just make me Stronger Than I Was
Before I met you, I bet you I'll be just fine without you
    And if I stumble, I won't crumble
I'll get back up and uhhh
And I'mma still be humble when I scream fuck you
'Cause I'm stronger than I was

A beautiful face is all that you had
'Cause on the inside you're ugly, man
But you're all that I love
    Aggressed, you can't leave
Please stay here with me, baby, hold me please
And I'd beg and I plead, drop to knees
And I'd cry and I'd scream, baby, please don't leave
'Cause you left and you took everything I had left
And left nothing, nothing for me
So please don't wake me from this dream, baby
We're still together in my head
And you're still in love with me
Till I woke up to discover that that dream was dead

    But you won't break me
You'll just make me stronger than I was
Before I met you, I bet you I'll be just fine without you
    And if I stumble, I won't crumble
I'll get back up and uhhh
And I'mma still be humble when I scream fuck you
'Cause I'm stronger than I was

You walked out, I almost died
It was almost a homicide that you caused cause I was so traumatized
Felt like I was in for a long bus ride
I'd rather die than you not be by my side
Can't count how many times I vomited, cried
Go to my room, turn the radio on and hide, uh
    We were Bonnie and Clyde
No, on the inside you were Jekyll and Hyde I
Felt like my whole relationship with you was a lie
It was you and I, why did I think it was ride or die?
'Cause if you could've took my life you would've
It's like you put a knife to my chest and pushed it right through to the
Other side of my pack and stuck a spike, too, should've
Put up more of a fight, but I couldn't at the time
No one could hurt me like you could've
Take you back now, what's the likelihood of that?
Bite me, bitch, chewing on a nineteen footer
'Cause this morning I finally stood up
Held my chin up, finally showed a sign of life in me for the
First time since you left me and left me with nothing but shattered dreams
And a life we could've had and we could've been
But I'm breaking out of this slump I'm in
Pulling myself out of the dumps once again
I'm getting up once and for all, fuck this shit
I'mma be late for the pity party
But you're never gonna beat me to the fucking punch again
Took it on the chin like a champ so don't lump me in with the chumpy ends
I'm done being your punching bag
It was the November 31st today, would've been our anniversary
Two years, but you left on the first of May
I wrote it on the calender, was gonna call, but couldn't think of the words to say
But it came to me just now, so I put 'em in a verse to lay
And I thank you cause you made me a better person than I was
But I hate you cause you drained me
I gave you all, you gave me none
But if you blame me, you're crazy
And after all that's said and done
I'm still angry, yeah, I maybe
    I may never trust someone

    But you won't break me
You'll just make me stronger than I was
Before I met you, I bet you I'll be just fine without you
    And if I stumble, I won't crumble
I'll get back up and uhhh
And I'mma still be humble when I scream fuck you
'Cause I'm stronger than I was

    Stronger Than I Was
  • This song finds Eminem rap-singing from the perspective of his ex-wife Kim Mathers, whom he was with as recently as 2006. They had a very volatile on-off relationship and Em poured scorn at her on several of his songs, including the Marshall Mathers LP track "Kim," where he fantasized about killing her.
  • The lyric, "Uh, we were Bonnie and Clyde. No, on the inside you were Jekyll and Hyde," refers to The Slim Shady LP track, "'97 Bonnie & Clyde" where Eminem raps about after violently murdering Kim, taking his daughter Hailie to the beach to dispose of her body.
  • According to some reports, the song is about Eminem's "Love The Way You Lie" collaborator, Rihanna. TMZ claimed that the pair fell in love in 2010 after recording that song.

    Midnight Show Lyrics

    I know what you want
I'm gonna take you a Midnight Show tonight
And if you keep a secret
I got a blanket in the back seat of my mind
And a little place that sits beneath the sky
She turned her face to speak
But no one heard her cry

    Drive faster, boy
    Drive faster, boy

    I know there's a hope
There's too many people trying to help me cope
You got a real short skirt
I wanna look up, look up, look up, yeah yeah

    We were just in time
Let me take a little more off your mind
    There's something in my head
    Somewhere in the back said
We were just a good thing
We were such a good thing

Make it go away without a word
    But promise me you'll stay
    Fix these things I've heard
Or make it go away! Oh

Drive faster, boy yo uh, oh no

The crashing tide can't hide a guilty girl
With jealous hearts that start with gloss and curls
I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier
Of stars and atmosphere, and watched her
    And watched her disappear
    Into the midnight show

Faster, faster, faster, faster, faster, faster
Oh, no no no no no no, no no no no no
    If you keep a secret
Well baby I can keep, if you can keep a secret
    (She said she loved me)
If you can keep a secret, I can keep a secret
    (She said she loved me)
If you can keep a secret well baby I can keep it a secret

    Beautiful Pain Lyrics

I can feel the heat rising
    Everything is on fire
Today's a painful reminder of why
    We can only get brighter
The further you put it behind ya
And right now I'm on the inside
    Looking out, 'cause

    I'm standing in the flames
And it's a beautiful kind of pain
    Setting fire to yesterday
Find a light, find a light, find a light
    Standing in the flames
And it's a beautiful kind of pain
    Setting fire to yesterday
Find a light, find a light, find a light

Yesterday was the tornado warning, today is like the morning after
Your world is torn in half.
You wake and let's wait to start the morning process
Rebuilding and you're still a work in progress.
Today is a whole new chapter, it's like an enormous ass.
    The thunderstorm has passed ya.
Your weather didn't poke his eyes out with the thorn bush that you used to smell the roses.
Stopped to inhale, can't even tell your nose is stuffed.
So focused on the bright side.
Then you floor the gas pedal and hit the corner fast,
The more asserted, never looking back, may hit the curb,
But everyday is a new learning curve as you steer through life.
Sometimes you might not wanna swerve but you have to to avert a disaster.
    Lucky, no permanent damage,
'Cause they hurt you so bad.
It's like they murdered your ass and threw dirt on your casket,
But you returned from the ashes.
And that hurt that you have, you just converted to gasoline,
And while you're burning the past, standing at inferno and chant

I can feel the heat rising
    Everything is on fire
Today's a painful reminder of why
    We can only get brighter
The further you put it behind ya
And right now I'm on the inside
    Looking out, 'cause

So familiarize what having to swallow this pill is like
It happens all the time, they take your heart and steal your life
And it's as though you feel you've died because you've been killed inside
But yet you're still alive which means you will survive
Although today you may weep because you're weak and
Everything seems so bleek and hopeless
The light that you're seeking, it begins to seep in
That's the only thing keeping you from leaping off the motherfreaking deep end
And I'm pulling for you to push through this feeling
And with a little time that should do the healing
And by tomorrow you may even feel so good that you're willing
To forgive them even after all that shit you been put through.
This feeling of resilience is building.
And the flames are burning quick as fire would through this building you're sealed in
But you're fireproof, and flame retardant you withstood it.
And as you climb up to the roof you're just chillin' and you look down
'Cause you're so over them you could put the heel of your foot through the ceiling.

As time passes, things change everyday
    But wounds, wounds heal
But scars still remain the same
But tomorrow today's gone down in flames
Throw the match, set the past up ablaze

So feel the fire beneath your feet
As you barely even perspire from the heat
Exhale deep and breathe a sigh of relief
And as you say goodbye to the grief
It's like watching the walls melt in your prison cell
But you've extinguished this living hell
Still a little piece of you dies, you scream

I can feel the heat rising
    Everything is on fire
Today's a painful reminder of why
    We can only get brighter
The further you put it behind ya
And right now I'm on the inside
    Looking out, 'cause

I feel the burn, watch the smoke as I turn rising,
    A phoenix from the flames
I have learned, from fighting fights, that weren't mine
Not with fists, but with wings that I will fly

I can feel the heat rising
    Everything is on fire
Today's a painful reminder of why
    We can only get brighter
The further you put it behind ya
And right now I'm on the inside
    Looking out, 'cause

    Beautiful Pain
  • Sia Furler sings the hook on this track. The Australian singer-songwriter has sung on hits for David Guetta ("Titanium") and Flo Rida ("Wild Ones").
  • Sia, who is openly bisexual, was criticized for working with Eminem after The Marshall Mathers LP 2 album featured seemingly homophobic lyrics. The Australian songstress asserted that she doesn't think Eminem is anti-gay, telling The Huffington Post that, "she was under the impression that Eminem's alter-ego Slim Shady was performance art, and a thing of the past," adding that she does not believe the rapper is actually homophobic.

Sia eventually donated her share of profits from the song to the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center.

    Child In Time
  • Running 10 minutes and 15 seconds, this is a protest song to the United States' war in Vietnam. The lyrics were written by lead singer Ian Gillan.
  • This features a keyboard/guitar solo by Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore respectively.
  • This album was released by the Mark II version of the group which is Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (Bass), Jon Lord (keyboard), and Ian Paice(drums). This song was played during the Deep Purple Mark II reunion tour "Come Hell or Highwater" in 1993. Ritchie Blackmore quit the tour after the European portion - he also ended the original Mark II by quitting because of Ian Gillan's "lack of work ethic."
  • Ian Gillan said in an interview in 2002: "There are two sides to that song - the musical side and the lyrical side. On the musical side, there used to be this song 'Bombay Calling' by a band called It's A Beautiful Day. It was fresh and original, when Jon was one day playing it on his keyboard. It sounded good, and we thought we'd play around with it, change it a bit and do something new keeping that as a base. But then, I had never heard the original 'Bombay Calling'. So we created this song using the Cold War as the theme, and wrote the lines 'Sweet child in time, you'll see the line.' That's how the lyrical side came in. Then, Jon had the keyboard parts ready and Ritchie had the guitar parts ready. The song basically reflected the mood of the moment, and that's why it became so popular." (courtesy: Deep Purple Appreciation Society )
  • Lars Ulrich of Metallica cites this as one of his favorite songs of all time. He says that when he was 9 years old, his father took him to a Deep Purple show, and it changed his life. "This is their most iconic moment," he told Rolling Stone regarding the song. "I've heard it 92,000 times, and it never sounds anything less than great."

Peace Sword (Open Your Heart) Lyrics

    Peace Sword (Open Your Heart)
  • This kaleidoscopic song was penned by The Flaming Lips for Ender's Game and plays during the movie's end credits. When the band originally received the commission, frontman Wayne Coyne had not heard of the 1985 hit novel, which was the film's source. "People described it to me a bit like 'Harry Potter in outer space,'" he explained to Spin magazine. However, attracted by the flick's "video game philosophy" and subject matter of a youngster who is sent to an advanced military academy in outer space to prepare for a future alien invasion that threatens the future of humanity, the band was up for the challenge.

Coyne and his bandmates penned the song using some clips from the film and a thematic sketch as their source material. The frontman told Spin that at first, the filmmakers thought the song was "too sad," but after some alterations came up with the swooning, psychedelic finished product.
  • The Flaming Lips' creative juices were so inspired by the process that they recorded five further songs inspired by Ender's Game. Though the additional tunes were all rejected by the filmmakers, the band collected them all together on a disc, Peace Sword EP. Coyne told Rolling Stone that the experience confirmed his belief that writing to a narrative aids his band's writing process citing two of their best-known albums as evidence -The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. "Our most satisfying records to listen to... at the end you kind of stumble upon a character and a theme and a story," he said. "The more you do it, the more you're compelled by your own creation."

"Oi, Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert!"
    "What 'e say?"

    Brezhnev took Afghanistan.
    Begin took Beirut.
    Galtieri took the Union Jack.
And Maggie, over lunch one day,
Took a cruiser with all hands.
Apparently, to make him give it back

  • Like the rest of the album, this focuses on war, and Roger Waters' displeasure with "Maggie," Prime Minister at that time. Thatcher had just initiated the Falkland Islands "war," referred to obfuscatorially in "The Post-War Dream." This is most likely what the song refers to in the lines about taking the Union Jack (name for the British flag) and Maggie taking a cruiser to make him give it back.

    Postcards Lyrics

Sundays sitting on your back porch
And I came up with a couple of cords
    And I played for you

You let me keep you entertained
    With stories I exaggerate
    That you know aren't true

And as you sit there making daisy chains
And I throw in a hand granate
And tell you how it is I really feel for you

I'm sending Postcards from my heart
With love for a postmark and then
You know that you make me feel like we've been caught
Like kids in the school yard again
And I can't keep it to myself
    Can't spell it any better
    L.O.V.E forever
I hope you know that I'm sending a postcard
I don't care who sees what I sent
Or if the whole world knows what's in my head

We chased the sun til it got away
On a bicycle that your daddy made
    But not made for two

Then we sat out on your rocking chair
You with a flower in your hair
    That I found for you

But then Monday always comes around
And it's sad 'cause I can't see you now
Wan't you to know you're always in my head

I'm sending postcards from my heart
With love for a postmark and then..
You know that you make me feel like we've been caught
Like kids in the school yard again
And I can't keep it to myself
    Can't spell it any better
    L.O.V.E forever
I hope you know that I'm sending a postcard
I don't care who sees what I sent
Or if the whole world knows what's in my head

You know sometimes it's hard to see
You say the world that torture me
But inside I know exactly how I feel
The things that I can't say out loud
I'll find a place to write it down
I hope that they will find you in the end

I'm sending postcards from my heart
With love for a postmark and then
You know that you make me feel like we've been caught
Like kids in the school yard again
And I can't keep it to myself
    Can't spell it any better
    L.O.V.E forever
I hope you know that I'm sending a postcard
I don't care who sees what I sent
Or if the whole world knows what's in my head

    know, know, know
All the things I want you to
    know, know, know
All the things I want you to
    know, know, know
All the things I want you to

  • This unabashed, jaunty declaration of love finds Blunt sending postcards from his heart to his lover. It is one of many songs on Moon Landing that concern matters of the heart and the record's release coincided with Blunt's relationship with Sofia Wellesley, the granddaughter of the current Duke of Wellington and a descendant of the Iron Duke himself. During an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Blunt was asked if the album is about Sofia? "I think I probably tap into lots of different things along the way," he replied. "One song might come from a mixture of different experiences. But, yes, this album is absolutely about my life where I am at the moment, rather than my life in the past."
  • Blunt originally wrote this ukulele-led song on the piano.

    Everytime You Go Away Lyrics

Hey!, if we can solve any problem
Then why do we lose so many tears
Oh, and so you go again
    When the leading man appears
    Always the same thing
Can't you see, we've got everything goin' on and on and on

Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you
Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you

Go on and go free, yeah
Maybe you're too close to see
I can feel your body move
It doesn't mean that much to me
I can't go on sayin' the same thing
Just can't you see, we've got everything do you even know we know

Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you, oh
Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you

I can't go on sayin' the same thing
'Cause baby, can'tcha see, we've got everything goin' on and on and on

Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you
Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you

Looking at the pieces (Every time you go away)
Be careful (You take a piece of me with you)
(Every time you go away) Every time you go, every time you go
(You take a piece of me with you) You take a piece of me!
(Every time you go away you take a piece of me with you) Every time you go!

    Everytime You Go Away
  • This was written by Daryl Hall and originally recorded by Hall & Oates for the duo's 1980 album, Voices, but was not released as a single; Young's version became a hit nearly five years later. In the October 16, 2009 issue of Entertainment Weekly, Daryl Hall listed this as one of his favorite Hall & Oates songs and explained: "Paul Young had a pop hit with it a few years after we released it. It's just one of those songs. I feel very proud of its craftsmanship."
  • This was the biggest hit for Young. He contributed to Band Aid in 1984 and had hits with covers of R&B classics "Oh Girl" and "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted."
  • This song became one of the biggest hits with a grammar gaffe in the title. "Everytime" is not a word, so it should read "Every Time You Go Away." Young could point the finger at songwriter Daryl Hall or just enjoy the company of other grammatically questionable songs .
  • The video was one of the first directed by Nick Morris , who soon after did the iconic video for Europe's "The Final Countdown." In our interview with Morris, he explained: "Paul Young, I'd seen him loads of times as a student because he used to play all these club nights at universities and so on. I knew he was a really good live, sweaty, rock and roll guy, and I wanted to capture that. That's why we used the slow motion, that's why we used the backstage stuff."

Creating a video for a mid-tempo song that showcases the artist was not an easy task, but the slow motion, desaturated look with lots of candid shots worked very well. This style was copied by a number of other artists, notably Bon Jovi in their video for "Wanted Dead Or Alive."
  • Clay Aiken covered this on his 2006 album, A Thousand Different Ways.
  • Young's success with the song didn't produce any sour grapes for Daryl Hall, who credited him with tapping into the commercial potential he failed to see the first time around. Hall told Music Connection: "I never thought of it any other way than the way it was 'til Paul Young did it ... I was just doin' a kind of gospel/soul song; that was all I had in mind for it. I was really surprised to hear the production they did because it kept the elements but commercialized it - made it sound like a pop record."
  • Hall and Young performed this as an extended duet at a New York show in 1985.
  • In a 2014 Songfacts interview , Daryl Hall said he still counts this as one of his favorite covers of a Hall & Oates song.
  • The Hall & Oates version of this song is featured in the 2009 romantic comedy The Rebound, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha.

    Losing Sleep Lyrics

It's three AM, I'm calling in to tell you that without you here
    I'm Losing Sleep
    I'm losing sleep
Nervous, I'm around these lonely eyes, that's leaving me filled with fear
    I'm losing sleep
    I'm losing sleep

And I know what it's like
To be a child scared of the night

Please don't stop loving me, loving me
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Wanting me, wanting me like you do
Please don't stop caring now, caring now
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Caring now, caring now like you do

I know you have to work out there, it's for the best, but can't you see?
    I'm losing sleep
    I'm losing sleep
Remember telling you to go, you've always done what's good for me
    I'm losing sleep
    I'm losing sleep

And I know what it's like
To be a child scared, so scared of the night

Please don't stop loving me, loving me
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Wanting me, wanting me like you do
Please don't stop caring now, caring now
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Caring now, caring now like you do

Running from the dark but I just can't hide
Dreading sundown, yeah I'm dreading the night
Need you back here 'cause it feels so wrong yeah

Oh please don't stop loving me, loving me
No no oh no no no no no
    Loving me, loving me
    Darling no oh oh
Please don't stop caring now, caring now
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
    Caring now, caring now

Please don't stop loving me, loving me
    No oh oh
Wanting me, wanting me like you do

It's three AM, I'm calling in to tell you that without you here

  • The third single from John Newman's Tribute album finds him singing about being left alone racked with fear and paranoia, "like a child scared of the night." Newman wrote the song with British songwriter Steve Booker, whom he also collaborated with on "Love Me Again" and American Pop hitmaker Benny Blanco, whose resume includes Kesha's "TiK ToK" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls" and "Teenage Dream."

    Album: That's Life

    That's Life Lyrics

That's Life, that's what people say
    You're riding high in April,
    Shot down in May
But I know I'm gonna change that tune,
When I'm back on top, back on top in June

I said, that's life, and as funny as it may seem
    Some people get their kicks,
    Stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down,
'Cause this fine old world it keeps spinnin' around

    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
    A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself flat on my face,
I pick myself up and get back in the race

    That's life, I tell ya, I can't deny it,
    I thought of quitting, baby
But my heart just ain't gonna buy it
And if I didn't think it was worth one single try,
I'd jump right on a big bird and then I'd fly

    I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate,
    A poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out
    And I know one thing:
Each time I find myself layin' flat on my face,
I just pick myself up and get back in the race

    That's life, that's life
    And I can't deny it
Many times I thought of cuttin' out but my heart won't buy it
But if there's nothing shakin' come here this July
I'm gonna roll myself up in a big ball and die
    My, my

    That's Life
  • The "scowl" in Sinatra's voice was a result of producer Jimmy Bowen telling Sinatra, after the recording session, to get out of his car and back in the studio to re-record the vocal. This made Frank VERY angry, which is evident in the song. That was the exact "feel" that Bowen wanted.
  • This very optimistic song was written by Dean Kay and Kelly Gordon. Kay became a successful music publisher, and Gordon made a mark as a producer. Sinatra had a lot of ups and downs in his personal and professional life, and this song was a great showcase for his spirit and resilience. The phrase "That's Life" is often used to convey disappointment, but here Sinatra sees all the good things that life brings.
  • This was one of two Sinatra songs - the other being "Strangers in the Night" - prominently featured in the '80s comedy License to Drive. Les (Corey Haim) takes his crush (Heather Graham) out for a wild night in his grandpa's Cadillac, which has a Sinatra cassette stuck in the tape player. This song plays when Les and his friends frantically chase a drunk who steals the car for a joyride (and sings along to Sinatra's tune).
