Last Living Cowboy Lyrics

Last Living Cowboy
  • Keith penned this bouncy, Bluegrass cut with frequent collaborator Scotty Emerick . The song features harmonica, banjo and honky tonk rhythms. "This is the kind of stuff I wish would work on the radio," commented Keith. "This reminds me of growing up, cutting your teeth in the Texas and Oklahoma beer joints and seeing these singer/songwriters come through - Red Steagall, Guy Clark and those kinds of guys 30 years ago. It just reminds me of that old cowboy country and melody. We put a pretty good lyric on it."
  • The subject of the song remains stuck in an old fashioned lifestyle. "'Last Living Cowboy' is more along the stuff that I normally do," Keith told Radio.com . "Talking about this old man that's in the modern day and he's still hanging on to the last century values and fashion. It's comical."

    The Outsider Lyrics

    Help me if you can
    It's just that this is
    Not the way I'm wired
    So could you please,

    Help me understand why
You've given in to all these
    Reckless dark desires
    Your
    Lying to yourself again
    Suicidal imbecile
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
    Over this, why do you
Wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, well I don't wanna watch you

    Disconnect and self destruct one
    Bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

    Medicated, drama queen,
    picture perfect, numb belligerence
Narcissistic, drama queen, craving fame and all it's decadence

    Lying through your teeth again
    Suicidal imbecile
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this, why do you wanna
    Throw it away like this
Such a mess, well I don't wanna watch you

    Disconnect and self destruct one
    Bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

    They were right about you
    They were right about you

    Lying to my face again
    Suicidal imbecile
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this , why do you wanna
    Throw it away like this
Such a mess, over this, over this

    Disconnect and self destruct,
    One bullet at a time
What's your hurry, everyone will have his day to die
If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere,
Do it somewhere far away from here

    The Outsider
  • This song is sung from the perspective of a parent or friend of someone who has a great life but it suicidal. The narrator knows this person is only acting suicidal to gain attention.
  • Another possibility: The song is about a guy killing himself with drugs and it's sung from a loved one's view: "If you choose to pull the trigger should your drama prove sincere do it far away from here." The trigger is the needle containing the drugs and the loved one wants nothing to do with that person killing himself.

Whole Lot More Than That Lyrics

If I want a new truck, gonna need more money
If I want more sugar, gonna need a new honey
If I'm going to the dance, gotta get a new hat
Getting over you's gonna take me a Whole Lot More Than That

If I'm gonna watch a game, gonna need me a boob tube
If I'm gonna to the lake, gotta take an igloo
If I'm gonna catch a buzz, gonna need me a twelve pack
Getting over you's gonna take me a whole lot more than that

Going to need more whiskey, than one man can drink
Drown this memory, that just won't sink
I've hit rock bottom, in this bottle of Jack
Getting over you's gonna take me a whole lot more than that

If I need me a hangout, I'll find me a hot spot
If I need me a new song, gonna find me a jukebox
If I need me a kitty, I'll find me a cat
Getting over you's gonna take me a whole lot more than that

Going to need more whiskey, than one man can drink
Drown this memory, that just won't sink
'Cause I've hit rock bottom, in this bottle of Jack
So getting over you's gonna take me a whole lot more than that

Going to need more whiskey, than one man can drink
Drown this memory, that just won't sink
I've hit rock bottom, in this bottle of Jack
Getting over you's gonna take me a whole lot more than that

  • Keith penned this song with his longtime collaborator Bobby Pinson. He recalled: "That's me and Bobby on a bus run. We started spitting those lyrics out - if I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna need that - and just kept finding those over a couple days. We kind of worked the verse one day, then went and did something else and came back. I had another one and he had another one and we put them together, then we rhymed them and took it in the studio."

It's like I dressed up in my mamma's clothing
It's like I'm talking to a voice that doesn't exist
It's like I got a wire crossed upstairs
But all I want is just a little truth and that's it

They say I'm Mental but I'm just confused
They say I'm mental but I've been abused
They say I'm mental 'cause I'm not amused by it all

Another anchorman is on the TV
He's got that far away and they can't look in his eyes
I turn the channel but nothing is changing
The only truth is that everything's a lie

They say I'm mental but I'm just confused
They say I'm mental but I've been abused
They say I'm mental 'cause I'm not amused by it all

There's truth in everything, there's truth in lies
With all this knowledge well I think I'm gonna be wise

They say I'm mental but I'm just confused
They say I'm mental but I've been abused
They say I'm mental 'cause I'm not amused by it all

  • This a song about having a form of schizophrenia. He hears voices and dresses in his mothers clothes - everyone thinks he's "Mental" but he is explaining that it's because of his confusion with the world: "The only truth is that everything is a lie." Hard Way To Make An Easy Living Lyrics

Some people say he’s a wealthy man
But he built his house with his own two hands
On a piece of land that’s as far as you can see

They call him lucky, but they don’t know
He’s up and running when the rooster crows
And he’s still in the fields with his supper cold
    But if you ask me,

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

His flatbed it was shiny and new back in 1992
It’s been a few since he had ‘im a year like that
He ain’t got time to complain,
Hay on the ground and it looks like rain and,
Pray it ain’t like the twister that came back in ’88 and laid everything flat

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

They take for granted for what he’s planted in that stubborn ground,
But the cattle and the cotton know that they don’t know in town

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

    Makin’ easy living,
    Making easy living.

Hard Way To Make An Easy Living
  • Keith penned this tribute to farmers with his long term collaborator Bobby Pinson. He recalled: "We wrote that up in a cabin starting with some minor chords. It was one of those deals where we could just go down the neck of the guitar trying to find what chord goes next. You wind up back at one again and go, how'd we get back here? Then you start trying to write to it."

"I've got a friend who has about 10,000 acres and everybody thinks he's really well off," Keith continued. "I told Bobby that people think because this guy does a million dollars' worth of ranching business and a million dollars' worth of cattle business every year that he's sitting good. But it's a hard way to make an easy living. He's got lots of bills, lots of equipment, lots of labor, and puts in lots of time. When you think about running cattle and farming 10,000 acres - you may take in million, but probably 80% of that goes right back in. And then you still have to live, do upkeep for the ranch - you're always fencing, fetching cows, trucking in equipment and working. I usually write from the hub out, but this started with the story then we worked through a chorus. Tom T. Hall style - start at the front and tell the story."
  • As a successful country star, who has had to work hard for his wealth, Keith may be also delivering a message about where he came from. When asked on 101.5 the Eagle's Jon & Amanda Show whether he's become too rich to be truly country, he replied: "They just see me now. They didn't see where you came from; what your roots were like," he says. "If you've been poor before… no matter how much money you get, you're still not comfortable with it. You never forget what it felt like to be without."

  • Some lyric analysis:
"Born too young" - Cornell had immature views in his former career as a lyricist and singer.
"Top of my lungs" - He sang in a high-pitched voice when he was in early Soundgarden.
"Sitting on the bottom rug" - On the back of the Louder Than Love CD, there is a portrait of a band, and there is a transparent rug over them.

    Chuckie's Gone
  • This song was written in memory of Toby's bandleader and bassist Chuck Goff, who passed away in 2013. Keith recalled: "He lived here in Oklahoma and died right before those massive tornadoes came through. So I started it out with that. He stood by me on my left for 25 years. 'Your bass is there where you used to stand and even though we got a killer band, I still look up in the middle of the song and realize Chuckie's gone.'"

The song follows Keith's 2009 cut "Cryin' for Me (Wayman's Song)" in paying tribute to a fallen friend.
  • Keith wrote in the Drinks After Work liner notes: "This album is dedicated in memory of Chuck Goff, our longtime bandleader-bass player,. He will live on forever in our thoughts and in our performances. We miss ya, Shmudlo."

The Devil In The Wishing Well Lyrics

I met Jane at the center of the earth
It was dark there was dirt all around
But I gather you can figure that

And Jane says, "I'm your body in the night
And I'll lead you where you might find yourself
    Better if you follow me"

So go right you'll be left at a big hotel
You'll meet the Devil at the bottom of a wishing well
You know you better give him something
    Give him something good
    Like everybody else he's misunderstood

Jane says, "It's a long way out
But I'm gonna make it out
    'Cause I'm about her"

See Jane says, "You're as holy as a ghost
But who loves you the most, if you offer
I might let you carry me"

And Jane there's nobody here but yourself
In the end it's the wealth of your spirit
Now hurry up get on with it

I went left, I got right at some big hotel
There was a Devil at the bottom of the wishing well
He said, "You better give me something
    Give me something good
    Like everybody else I'm misunderstood"

Jane says, "It's a long way out
    I'm gonna make it out
    'Cause I'm about

Jane says, "It's a long way out
    I'm gonna make it out
    I'm gonna make it out
    I'm gonna make it out"

I took a guess and cut a portion out of my heart
He said that's nowhere close enough but it's a damn good start
I wrote the secret that I buried on the wishing well wall
He said, "I've seen one it follows that I've seen them all"

We spoke of human destination in a perfect world
Derived the nature of the universe found it unfulfilled
As I took him in my arms he screamed, "I'm not insane
I'm just looking for someone to understand my pain"

    It's a long way out
    I'm gonna make it out
    It's a long way out
    I'm gonna make it out
    It's a long, it's a long way out

  • This appears to be about a woman helping her husband or boyfriend overcome his depression. When we asked Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik what led him to write the song, he replied: "Experience, observation, and a hope that people in the grasp can find their way out."
  • Around the time this was released, Five for Fighting's John Ondrasik explained on his website: "I recently played 'The Devil In The Wishing Well' to a very close friend of mine who has a history of self harming, etc. Anyway, she was deeply moved by the song and played it nonstop for days (no I really mean it!). Along with some friendly words of advice this song helped her to confide with her mum and subsequently has resulted in her being diagnosed with depression. • The Wanted's Max George penned the lyrics for this Soft Rock anthem about his breakup from ex-fiancée Michelle Keegan. The singer and the British actress broke up in July 2012 after dating for 18 months, but Max is clearly having a hard time coming to terms with the split,. "We've written about tough experiences we've had in our lives over the years - relationship breakdowns and that sort of thing," he told UK newspaper The Mirror. "I've written about my break-up with Michelle. I've written a couple of songs about it and the experiences I went through. There's one song called 'Heartbreak Story,' which is definitely close to me."
  • The relationship ended after reports surfaced about Max cheating on Michelle and this song has very apologetic lyrics.

"Just say you'll let me in your heart.
I should've been there from the start.
I promise you as long as you're with me
There'll never be a heartbreak story."

Max wishes he could go back in time and regain Michelle's trust.

The bright light is lying down
The earth and the sea and the sky
Is at rest with the ocean
    And the days go by

They go into the seas that have no shores
Haunted by that same closed door
Looking up at skies on fire
    Leaving nothing left of us
    To discover

    [Chorus]
And the Planets Of The Universe
    Go their way
Not astounded by the sun or the moon
    Or by the day
You and I will simply disappear
    Out of sight
But I'm afraid soon there'll be
    No light

    No doubt, no pain
    Come ever again, well
Let there be light in this lifetime
In the cool, silent moments of the nighttime

    [Chorus]

    We will never change again
The way that we are changing
Well, you'll forget the chill of love
    But not the strain

    Now I know
    Well, I was wrong
    To live for a dream
If I had my life to live over
    I would never dream, no
    I still wish you gone
    And I will live alone
    Yes, I will live alone

    [Chorus]

    You will never love again
    The way you love me
    You will never rule again
    The way you ruled me

Been ten years but I was a young man.
Fifteen more and I'll be old.
Couple years I may be a rich man,
where it ends up I don't really know.

    Looking out your weathered windows,
reaching for what you can't hold.
Considering the ways that the wind blows,
where it ends up you don't really know.
You're just looking for a reason and a place to call your own.

Nacogdoches up to Lucas, could you pick a better place to lose some change?
Down in Kemah it might seem a little too long a walk out to La Grange.
Corsicana, they might slam you. You'll be thirsty for a glass of lemonade.
Try to slow down and hang around along the way.

From Odessa up to Dumas, could you pick a better place to lose some change?

    Corsicana Lemonade
  • This is the title track of the sixth full-length studio album by Texas band White Denim. The record is a love letter to the Lone Star state.
  • Corsicana is a small city located on Interstate 45, some fifty-five miles south of downtown Dallas and this song is littered with other references to places in the band's home state. "On the last tour we'd kill time in the van by going through the alphabet with Texas towns," vocalist James Petralli explained to The Guardian, "so it's like an inventory, although some of the references do have more significance; I went to school in Nacogdoches and Josh grew up in Waxahachie. Kemah is a really dirty Texas coastal town with a rundown amusement park, kind of like the worst Brighton you could imagine. So the song is me trying to excavate some kind of narrative out of that."

You've done it all, you've broken every code
And pulled the rebel to the floor
You spoilt the game, no matter what you say
For only metal, what a bore!

    Blue eyes, blue eyes
How come you tell so many lies?

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild

There's nothing left, all gone and run away
Maybe you'll tarry for a while
It's just a test, a game for us to play
Win or lose, it's hard to smile

    Resist, resist
It's from yourself you have to hide

Come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild

There ain't no more, you've taken everything
From my belief in Mother Earth
Can you ignore my faith in everything
Cause I know what faith is and what it's worth

    Away, away
And don't say maybe you'll try

To come up and see me, make me smile
Or do what you want, running wild

Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)
  • This was written as a riposte when the original lineup of Cockney Rebel walked out on Steve Harley. The song tells the story of the first incarnation of the band.
  • When he performed the song on Top Of The Pops, although the instrumental backing was mimed, Harley performed a live vocal and promptly forgot most of the second and third verses.
  • The acoustic, flamenco-styled guitar solo was originally a soundcheck warm-up that was captured on tape and later used when it was realized it added to the song.
  • In 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, Steve Harley recalls the end of Cockney Rebel version 1: "We split up because they wanted to to take my leadership away. They wanted to dilute it and Make Me Smile is saying 'Come back one day and I'll laugh.' It was arrogant but I knew they were wrong - they didn't understand the group like I did." In the song Steve accuses them of selling out and sings, "You spoilt the game, no matter what you say, for only metal-what a bore."
  • Steve adds in 1000 UK #1 Hits: "There are 120 cover versions of Make Me Smile, but only The Wedding Present have done it differently. They did a punk version and made it kick. They understood the venom in the lyrics."
  • This features in the 1997 film The Full Monty.
  • This song also featured prominently in the 1998 cult film Velvet Goldmine, about the rise and fall of Glam (or Glitter) Rock. The film's main character is based on David Bowie's character of Ziggy Stardust. Bowie disapproved of the film and refused to allow his music to be used, so a variety of other Glam and Glam-influenced tracks were used instead.
  • Harley started writing the song within days of the old Cockney Rebel breaking up. He told Uncut magazine January 2012 the first verse ("You've done it all, you've broken every code/And pulled the rebel to the floor"), "was probably written at four in the morning after a bottle of brandy, feeling sorry for myself."
  • The song was originally written as a slow blues, but producer Alan Parsons suggested speeding it up. He recalled to Uncut: "It was a little dirgy, slower and a little pedestrian, very on the beat. I changed it to a way I thought worked much better with the girls."
