Katy Perry - Legendary Lovers Lyrics

Under a silver moon, tropical temperature
I feel my lotus bloom, come closer
I want your energy, I want your aura
You are my destiny, my mantra

Never knew I could see something so clearly looking through my third eye
Never knew karma could be so rewarding and bring me to your life
Maybe this is the beginning of something so magical, tonight (oh, oh)

Take me down to the river
Underneath the blood orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum

Legendary lovers, we could be legendary
Legendary lovers, we should be legendary

Go down in history
Go down together, into infinity, forever
You're Cleopatra
You're blushing Juliet
Anything for your love, a ride or die

Never knew I could see something so clearly looking through my third eye
Never knew karma could be so rewarding and bring me to your life
Maybe this is the beginning of something so magical, tonight (oh, oh)

Take me down to the river
Underneath the blood orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum

Legendary lovers, we could be legendary
Legendary lovers, we should be legendary

Take me down to the river
Underneath the blood orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum

Legendary lovers, we could be legendary
Legendary lovers, we should be legendary

Take me down to the river
Underneath the blood orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum

Legendary lovers, we could be legendary
Legendary lovers, we should be legendary

Legendary Lovers
  • This mystical love song finds Perry describing the eternal passion between herself and her beau as well as namechecking legendary lovers Egyptian Queen Cleopatra and Shakespeare's tragic heroine, Juliet. She sings on the chorus:

"Take me down to the river
    Underneath the blood-orange sun
Say my name like a scripture
Keep my heart beating like a drum."

Perry penned the song in her hometown of Santa Barbara with her frequent collaborators, Bonnie McKee, Henry Walter, Max Martin and Dr. Luke.
  • The dreamy EDM-lite tune features Indian percussion and lyrics focusing on Eastern religious concepts such as infinity and karma. "I think that we had a lot of fun on 'Legendary Lovers,'" Bonnie McKee told MTV News. "I feel like I was able to pull a lot of imagery from really early [Eastern-influenced] stuff that I did [when I was a kid and young songwriter], and it was a lot of fun to get into the Bollywood sort of theme 'cause I know she's always had an obsession with that to. I think they're pretty classic themes that she goes over. When you're writing love songs, it's always forever; they seem to always last throughout time."

    Rockabye Baby Lyrics

    Rockabye Baby
  • Originally titled "Hush-a-bye Baby," this nursery rhyme was said to be the first poem written on American soil (according to 1904's Book Lover). There's no official record, however, that proves when the song was written. Some sources claim it was as early as the 1500s. It first appeared in print in Mother Goose's Melody in 1765 and contained a stern morality lesson in the footnote: "This may serve as a Warning to the Proud and Ambitious, who climb so high that they generally fall at last."
  • Several rumors exist about "Rock-a-bye Baby's" origin, none of which has been proven:

It was written by a pilgrim who sailed to America on the Mayflower. During this trip, the young passenger observed the way Native American women rocked their babies in birch-bark cradles suspended from the high branches of a tree, allowing the wind to rock the baby to sleep.

Effie Crockett, a relative of Davy Crockett, wrote the lyrics in 1872 while babysitting a restless child. (Indeed, Crockett - known as Effie I. Canning - has an IMDB filmography containing over 175 credits for the extensive use of "Rock-a-bye Baby" in film and television.)

It was inspired by an English family, the Kenyons, who lived in a vast tree house fashioned out of an ancient yew tree.

Author Gerald Massey ties the rhyme into Egyptian mythology in his book Ancient Egypt, claiming the baby is the god Horus.
  • Another legend finds the rhyme's origins steeped in the political climate prior to the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The baby refers to the heir born to England's King James II. Supposedly written in an English pub, the original lyrics served as a death wish upon the newborn prince in hopes the empire would be overthrown.
  • Even though this song is supposed to be a lullaby with a tender melody, many claim it's violent and abusive. It starts out sweet and innocent with the gentle "Rock-a-bye Baby," but quickly turns to disaster with when the bough breaks and down comes baby, cradle and all.
  • The title "Rock-a-bye Baby" was used for a 1958 comedy starring Jerry Lewis as a TV repairman who agrees to care for his movie star sweetheart's triplets.
  • If you're looking for a version of this song where the baby doesn't meet its doom, Candice Night recorded a more comforting rendition for her 2015 album Starlight Starbright with her husband Ritchie Blackmore on guitar. Her lyric becomes:

When that wind blows, there's nothing to fear
'Cause mommy and daddy will always be here

In our interview with Night , she said, "If you are a parent or caregiver you have absolutely every right - more than that, it should be your duty really - to do whatever you can do to comfort your child and let them know everything is all right. Even if it isn't... We all shoulder burdens and hide truths from our children so that they can retain their innocence. And the most vulnerable time for a child is right before bedtime. Why would anyone want to scare them at that moment?"

  • This song was influenced by Justin Timberlake. "I wrote it with that in mind," frontman Andy Brown told Digital Spy . "I've been listening to lots of Justin's new stuff like 'Suit & Tie', and I thought it would be great to do something a bit funkier."

"We wrote really fast actually," Brown added. We did it in a couple of hours with producer Matt Schwartz, who's worked with Kylie. It was really fun writing it and we were listening to 'Senorita' by Justin and Earth Wind & Fire and stuff like that, so it was really cool to write a song like that."

    Experiment IV Lyrics

We were working secretly for the military
Our experiment in sound was nearly ready to begin
We only know in theory what we are doing
Music made for pleasure, music made to thrill
It was music we were making here until
They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

From the painful cries of mothers to a terrifying scream
We recorded it and put it into our machine

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

It could feel like falling in love
    It could feel so bad
    It could feel so good
It could sing you to sleep
But that dream is your enemy!!

We won't be there to be blamed
We won't be there to snitch
I just pray that someone there can hit the switch

They told us all they wanted
Was a sound that could kill someone from a distance
So we go ahead and the meters are over in the red
It's a mistake in the making

And the public are warned to stay off

  • This song is about how sometimes scientists get so caught up in the pure science of what they are developing that they don't realize what purpose others may have for it. For example, when scientists started splitting atoms they probably did not think of the possible future applications as weapons.
  • The origin of this song came from Kate's consideration of music as such a beautiful thing and a positive force. The idea of something so beautiful being used to kill people was fascinating. There likely are sonic experiments of a similar type actually being carried out by militaries somewhere.
  • The Whole Story is a greatest hits album. This was the only new song included with songs from previous albums.

    Girls Lyrics

Bite your face to spite your nose
17 and a half years old
I'm worrying about my brother finding out
What’s the fun in doing what you're told?

    I said "No!"
'Oh give it a rest, I could persuade you
I'm not your typical, stoned 18 year old
Give me a night I'll make you'
"I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age
But girl I'm not your savior"
    Wrestle to the ground
    God help me now because

    They're just Girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

A pair of frozen hands to hold
Oh she's so southern so she feels the cold
One moment I was tearing off your blouse
Now you're living in my house
What happened to just messing around?

    I said "Yo, I think I better go, I can't take you
You just sit and get stoned with 30 year olds and you think you've made it"
'Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?'
    Wrestle to the ground
    God help me now because

    They're just girls breaking hearts
    Eyes bright, uptight, just girls
But she can't be what you need if she's 17
    They're just girls
    They're just girls

I told her from the start
    Destined to be hard
I told her from the start
    I’ll break your heart
    Destined to be hard
    Break your heart

    I said "Yo, I think I better go. I can't take you"
I know you're looking for salvation in the secular age
But girl I'm not your savior"
'Well, shouldn't you be fucking with somebody your age instead of making changes?'

  • This song embodies a devil-may-care attitude, and vocalist Matt Healy and director Adam Powell penned a tongue-in-cheek video treatment to accompany the track. Filmed in LA, the clip sees the 1975 taking a playful poke at the 'off the shelf' major-label pop promo. Healy explained: "When we released our last video ('Sex'), people really reacted to the fact that it was in color. There was a lot of conjecture and talk surrounding it - due to the fact that it was an unexpected stylistic change. It was brought to our attention that certain people thought we were 'conforming to a record companies wishes' along with other expected and unexpected clichés. Obviously this couldn't be further from the truth, we are lucky enough to be surrounded by a group of individuals whose mantra centers on facilitating our creative wishes, we found the whole idea of us being told what to do fascinating."

"The story of the band who suffer at the hands of a record label shortly after a delirious rise is a tale as old as time," he continued. "So we kinda wanted to make a tongue in cheek video about it. Twinned with our love of 80's pop, its innocence, grandiosity and conceptual ideas in music videos - we wanted to make a video about a record label's attempt at enforced conformity. We got our mate Adam down to a studio in Los Angeles at the start of our USA tour, got four models and made a video about us not wanting to make a video."

    Album: Never for Ever
    Released: 1980

    Babooshka Lyrics

She wanted to test her husband
She knew exactly what to do
    A pseudonym to fool him
She couldn't have made a worse move

    She sent him scented letters,
And he received them with a strange delight.
    Just like his wife
But how she was before the tears,
And how she was before the years flew by,
And how she was when she was beautiful.
    She signed the letter

    "All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!"

She wanted to take it further,
So she arranged a place to go,
    To see if he
    Would fall for her incognito.
And when he laid eyes on her,
He got the feeling they had met before.
    Uncanny how she
Reminds him of his little lady,
Capacity to give him all he needs,
Just like his wife before she freezed on him,
Just like his wife when she was beautiful.
    He shouted out, "I'm

    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!
    All yours,
    Babooshka, Babooshka, Babooshka-ya-ya!

    Babooshka
  • This is about futile situations and how we often ruin things for ourselves. In the song, a man is tested by his wife when she starts sending anonymous scented letters. Seeing his reaction, she takes it further by arranging a meeting with her in disguise. Not knowing it is his own wife, he is reminded of his wife when she was younger and more amorous.
  • The word "Babooshka" is Russian for grandmother. It's also the name of a type of headdress. The title was chosen through a series of coincidences: Kate turned on the TV and someone was singing about Babooshka; looking through a magazine she came across an opera titled Babooshka, and a friend had a cat named Babooshka.
  • They went through a lot of boxes of broken crockery to get the right sound at the end of the song.
  • This reached #1 in Australia, #3 in France, and cracked the Top 10 in Canada and Ireland.

    Midnight Road Lyrics

    Midnight Road
  • 18-year-old country singer-songwriter Rachel Farley penned this song in a session with Ross Copperman and Heather Morgan. She told Radio.com that the initial inspiration was a "haunting track" that Copperman created on his Mac computer, which then led to Morgan coming up with the song title.
  • Farley explained the song's meaning to Radio.com: "I've always loved the awkwardness and excitement of a new relationship," she said. "That moment when you're riding around in a car, and you're not sure how the night's going to end–if ya'll are going to kiss, or hold hands. And that's what 'Midnight Road' is about, that whole hodgepodge of emotions that situation brings on. And at the same time, [the female character] is taking charge, saying, 'I dare you to take it to the next level.'"

    Hammer Horror Lyrics

    You stood in the belltower,
    But now you're gone.
So who knows all the sights
    Of Notre Dame?

They've got the stars for the gallant hearts.
I'm the replacement for your part.
But all I want to do is forget
    You, friend.

    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
    I leave the lights on
    To ease my soul.
    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave it alone.
    I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

    Rehearsing in your things,
    I feel guilty.
    And retracing all the scenes,
    Of your big hit,
Oh, God, you needed the leading role.
It wasn't me who made you go, though.
Now all I want to do is forget
    You, friend.

    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave me alone.
The first time in my life,
    I leave the lights on
    To ease my soul.
    Hammer Horror, Hammer Horror,
    Won't leave it alone.
    I don't know,
Is this the right thing to do?

Who calls me from the other side
    Of the street?
And who taps me on the shoulder?
I turn around, but you're gone.

  • The song is about two actors who are friends. One is playing the lead role in a production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame, a part he's read all of his life and has been waiting for a chance to play. After many rehearsals he accidentally dies and his friend is asked to take over the role, which he does because his own career is on the line. The dead man comes back to haunt him because he doesn't want him to have the role, believing that he is taking away the only chance he ever had in life. The actor is saying, "Leave me alone, it's not my fault. I have to take this role but I'm not sure if it's the right thing to do because the ghost won't leave me alone and is really freaking me out. I see him at every corner."
  • This was inspired by James Cagney playing the role of Lon Chaney as the hunchback-he was an actor in an actor in an actor, rather like Chinese boxes, and that was what Kate was trying to create.

"He passed away early in our friendship. It was like losing a father for him. I remember talking to him, and making sure he was OK. There had been a lady who had taken care of him the last few weeks of his life, and she came to Keith and said 'A closed eye ain't sleeping, and a goodbye ain't always gone.' I don't really know what any of that meant in that setting, but it just stuck with me. I held on to it for a real long time, and we put that into the song."

    Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine

    Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this

And it's all in my head
    But she's touching his chest
Now, he takes off her dress
    Now, letting me go

I just can't look its killing me
    And taking control
Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
    Swimming through sick lullabies
    Choking on your alibis

    Mr. Brightside
  • Killers guitarist Dave Keuning wrote this about lead singer Brandon Flowers' ex-girlfriend who cheated on him. Flowers recalled to Q magazine March 2009 how he discovered her with another man at the Crown and Anchor pub in his hometown of Las Vegas: "I was asleep and I knew something was wrong. I have these instincts. I went to the Crown and Anchor and my girlfriend was there with another guy." Flowers added that the song was "born" at the Crown and Anchor.
  • In the video, actress Izabella Miko (of Coyote Ugly) plays the girlfriend. Eric Roberts (Julia's brother) also stars in the video as the bad guy. This wasn't his first star turn in a major video: he also appeared in Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together."

The clip was directed by Sophie Muller, who has done over 100 videos, including several for Gwen Stefani.
  • In England, fans of Manchester United and Everton football teams have their own rendition of this song in praise of their former player Norman Whiteside.
  • Brandon Flowers told NME the story of the song in a 2012 interview: "We must've written it around the end of 2001. Dave and I were writing a ton of songs at the time, trying to figure out what it was that made us tick. I remember us going into the Virgin Megastore to buy (The Strokes') Is This It on the day it came out and, when we put it on in the car, that record just sounded so perfect. I got so depressed after that, we threw away everything and the only song that made the cut and remained was 'Mr. Brightside.'"

He continued: "It came from this cassette of ideas that Dave gave me, and one of them was the 'Mr. Brightside' riff. I was able to slap a chorus and some lyrics onto it, and I knew I liked it. But it wasn't until we first tried it out with a drummer that I knew it was special. We went to the guy's house and showed him the song, and I got the goosebumps after that.

Lyrically, it's about an odd girlfriend of mine. All the emotions in the song are real. When I was writing the lyrics, my wounds from it were still fresh. I am Mr. Brightside! But I think that's the reason the song has persisted - because it's real. People pick up on those things. And that goes all the way down to the production; we recorded it in a couple of hours, but it just sounds right, you know?"
  • The song returned to the Top 40 of the UK singles chart in 2013 after the band performed it on The X Factor.
  • Flowers recalled to NME in 2013: "I remember being in the studio, recording the demo but still writing the lyrics. I was procrastinating, and that's why the second verse is the same as the first one, but it just stuck."
  • A video showing a pub sing-a-long of the song at an Irish wake went viral in late March 2016. Brian O'Sullivan from Killorglin, County Kerry is seen paying his respects to Ger 'Farmer' Foley, who passed away at the age of 45, by prompting a mass rendition of the tune at Falvey's bar.

The Killers endorsed the clip, writing on Twitter: "Brian O'Sullivan, if Brandon ever needs a fill-in, we're calling you! May we all have friends like this #farmersrule".

    The Black Widow Lyrics

These words he speaks are true, we're all humanary stew if,
We don't pledge allegiance to The Black Widow.
The horror that he brings, the horror of his sting,
The unholiest of kings, the Black Widow.
Our minds will be his toy,
And every girl and boy will learn to be employed by the Black Widow.

Love him, yes, we love him, love him, yes, we love him.

He sits upon his throne and picks at all the bones of his,
Husbands and his wives he's devoured.
He stares with a gleam, with a laugh so obscene,
At the virgins and the children he's deflowered.

Love him, yes, we love him, love him, yes, we love him.

Our thoughts are hot and crazed, our brains are webbed in haze,
Of mindless senseless daze, the Black Widow.
These words he speaks are true, we're all humanary stew,
If we don't pledge allegiance to the Black Widow.

    The Black Widow
  • Eight years before the Thriller video, Alice Cooper created the original spooky mini-movie to a song narrated by Vincent Price. Alice Cooper: Welcome to My Nightmare was a film based on Cooper's stage show. Price, who was a famous horror actor, portrayed "The Spirit of the Nightmare," in which Cooper was trapped. "The Black Widow" is a lynchpin of the production, and the track that got Price involved in the project.

After coming up with the arachnid theme of this song, Cooper and his producer Bob Ezrin wrote a mordant introduction that they hired Price to narrate. This introduction sets the tone, as Price takes Cooper through his lair, refusing to release him from his nightmare. Price details the deadly proclivities of the black widow spider, which Cooper then sings about as he plays out his fears.

When Welcome To My Nightmare went on the road as a concert tour, this song got a lavish production, with a giant web and humanoid spiders. For the movie, many of these set pieces were used, along with a performance by Price. When done live, Cooper's guitarists Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter dueled on guitar for about 5 minutes while the stage morphed into a spider's lair. Price's recorded voice would then play, before Cooper would finally take the stage. His vocals are just a small part of the number, as most of it is dominated by guitar solos and spider battles.
  • Cooper wrote this song with his producer Bob Ezrin and his guitarist Dick Wagner. In our interview with Dick Wagner , he told us the story:

"I remember standing in the studio with Bob and Alice, and Bob said to me, 'Can you come up with some kind of mid-tempo heavy rock thing?' And I said, 'Let me give it a try.' I plugged my guitar in and just messed around and came up with that. It immediately fit, and Alice started singing 'Black Widow.' And later on he had the idea to bring in Vincent Price to do that talk, which Alice and Bob wrote - they wrote that speech for Vincent Price.

But that initial record, writing the chord changes and stuff, I remember just doing it on the spot; just a momentary inspiration. I wasn't sitting somewhere trying to write a song, it was just spontaneous combustion on the guitar."
  • Unlike most black widows of song and screen, this one is male, as Cooper sings about the spider (or its metaphoric equivalent) sitting on "his throne." This indicates that Vincent Price's character is, in fact, the black widow.

    Album: Pleased To Meet Me
    Released: 1987

    The Ledge Lyrics

All eyes look up to me
    High above the filthy streets
Heed no bullhorn when it calls
Watch me fly and die, watch me fall

I'm the boy they can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge
    Won't reach The Ledge

Wind blows cold from the west
I smell coffee, I smell doughnuts for the press (on their breath?)
A girl that I knew once years ago
Is tryin' to be reached on the phone

I'm the boy she can't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure
All the love sent up high to pledge...

    (Repeat)

Priest kneels silent, all is still
    Policeman reaches from the sill
Watch him, watch him try his best
There'll be no medal pinned to his chest

I'm the boy they couldn't ignore,
For the first time in my life, I'm sure

    (Repeat)

I'm the boy for the last time in my life

All the love that they pledge
For the last time will not reach the ledge...

    The Ledge
  • This is yet another song Paul Westerberg wrote about suicide. The band received a lot of flak because the song's release was around the same time a group of new Jersey teens took part in a suicide pact. Westerberg angrily defended the song, stating that it wasn't some cynical attempt to cash in on a tragedy, but more of an expression of empathy for the type of person that would consider such a desperate act. Suicide is one of his most frequent subjects and he has been treated for chronic depression in the past.
  • The fading scream heard at the end of the song is one of the most chilling rock moments ever, as the listener realizes the subject of the song carried out his intentions.
