Birthday

This upbeat jam finds Katy promising to give some lucky person the best birthday ever. The exuberant track was written by the singer in collaboration with Bonnie McKee, Henry Walter, Max Martin and Dr. Luke. The same team also penned Prism's lead single, "Roar."

Katy sings some of the song in a Mariah Carey-esque higher register. "I wanted to do something that Mariah Carey would have put on her first record," Perry said while introducing the song during Prism's listening party.

The song's live brass is provided by the Saturday Night Live house band horn section, which gives us another Mariah Carey connection. The multi-octave songstress employed this same horn section for her performance of "If It's Over" during her 1992 MTV Unplugged special.

The song finds Perry seducing a lover with a bunch of sexual innuendos. Bonnie McKee told MTV News: "The bridge actually the thing about the 'birthday suit' and the 'big balloons,' I was not in the room for that. I had no idea. I didn't hear it again until it had been mixed when I came in and listened to the bridge and I was like 'Katy, what did you do when I left the room?' It was really funny. I was laughing out loud."

The single's cover art depicts Katy and her sister Angela Hudson at a 1990 birthday party.

The song's music video features Perry playing five characters; "The World's Worst Birthday Party Entertainers." They are Goldie The Dancer, Jewish MC Yosef Shulem, Kriss The Crown, Princess Mandee and Ace the Animal Trainer. The prank-a-thon clip shows Perry crashing various real life birthday parties in disguise and ruining them.

Perry revealed to MTV News how she had to con party planners into thinking they were taking part in a reality TV show for the video. She explained, "We had to keep this super top secret. Of course, I had to go completely undercover, so it was skewed as a reality show called Birthday Blowout. So people signed up their birthday parties for this crazy reality show where anything could go, and anything did go...! The whole thing was staged."

This is about the grunge scene that was still in full effect in the early '90s. It's about how every band from Seattle thought they had a right to a record deal simply because they went along with what was the hot commodity: "Well I went to school in Olympia," "Everyone's the same."

This was deleted from the album and replaced by an outtake, "Olympia." Since Kurt Cobain died shortly before the album was released, it was thought that the lines "So much fun to be Nirvana, how would you like to be Nirvana? I'd rather die" caused the retraction, but the band and the Geffen label claimed it was pulled because it did not fit the album.

This ethereal song finds Perry recalling her failed marriage with Russell Brand. "We were best friends... now, you're just a ghost," she croons over synth stabs. When asked by the UK newspaper The Sunday Times how their breakup inspired her new album, the singer replied: "What I wanted to call this record at first was Adult Reality. Teenage Dream was me so high on that cotton-candy cloud, and then it's like I got punched in the face and kicked down the stairs a couple of times."

"I had to face the reality that things are not always on cloud nine," she added. "I was down and out, I'd lost hope, all of my self-confidence had been shattered."

Mother Love

This was the last song Freddie Mercury recorded. May explained in the Days of our Lives documentary that "Freddie would say 'give me words, I will sing' so there I was writing on scraps of paper these lines of 'Mother Love.' I would give him a line, he would sing it, then sing it again, then sing it again - so we only had three takes of everything. After he'd finished the second verse, he said 'Oh I don't feel too well, I'm going to go home and we'll finish it tomorrow'... and he never did. That was the last time I saw Freddie in the studio."

The final verse was written and sung by Brian May a couple of years after Mercury died in November 1991.

Roger Taylor is a particular admirer of this song. He notes in the Days of our Lives documentary: "I'm hearing the voice (Freddie's voice) getting... weaker. But I mean he still hits all the notes. There's an absolutely spine-chilling note in the middle of "Mother Love" ("out in the city, in the cold world outside, I don't want pity, just a safe place to hide") which is just a great bit of singing."

The lyrics were co-written by Freddie Mercury and Brian May. It is one of the few times in song that Mercury seems to admit his inner pains and struggles of dealing with AIDS ("I'm a man of the world and they say I am strong, but my heart is heavy and my hope is gone") - the other key one being "The Show Must Go On."

The random bursts of sound throughout the song and the strange end sounds are small segments of every Queen track ever recorded sped very fast through a tape machine and mashed together. They combine at the end with samples of Mercury's famous 'deh-doh!' vocal interludes with the crowd from Live at Wembley 1986, the synth intro to "One Vision," and a sample from his very first single, "Goin' Back" in 1972, which he performed vocals on under the pseudonym of Larry Lurex. In the context of the song it is obviously meant to show the cyclical nature of life and death, and a man looking back across the entire spectrum of his life and career.

Jonathan Davis originally wrote and recorded this tune with the Dutch Electronic music trio Noisia for inclusion on J Devil's debut album, but it ended up being reworked as a Korn song. Davis told The Pulse of Radio that Brian "Head" Welch 's return on guitar after an absence of nearly a decade was a good balance to his own continued fascination with electronic music. "We wanted to make a record that everybody was happy with, and Head coming back, I think, was great, 'cause me and him butted heads," he said. "'Cause he really is on the rock side and I was on the electronic side, and it was good having the compromise on both sides. It was just good for the creative process."

The David Dinetz directed video finds Korn taking their concerns over celebrity-led news overtaking deeper issues like governmental data surveillance. Davis told Rolling Stone, "We are all so caught up in watching crazy media on the Internet and TV that we are manipulated into ignoring that our privacy has all but disappeared."

The reasoning behind the video was an attempt was to highlight the band's theory that the government uses celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Kanye West and Justin Bieber to take our attention away from what Barack Obama has been doing while in office. For instance, the National Defense Authorization Act was signed by the President on the same day of Miley's 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance, yet the latter got the most media attention.

"I think that our government uses those people to detract from what's really going on," Davis told TMZ . "The thing with the whole Miley Cyrus stuff at the VMAs, when that went down Obama passed a law that made him basically a dictator. He can imprison whoever he wants. He doesn't have to charge them, he can hold them as long as he wants."

Lorenzo

This is about Lorenzo Odone, the severely disabled young boy from the 1993 film Lorenzo's Oil. Lorenzo's mother Michela had been working with Lorenzo on putting his life story into lyrical form as part of his stimulation, and it was Lorenzo's wish that Collins sing the song. Michela Odone received a songwriter credit along with Collins.

As of 2005, Lorenzo was still alive. He is severely disabled and cannot speak. He communicates through blinking his eyes to say no and wiggling his fingers to say yes.

This is the title track and lead single of Christian singer-songwriter Natalie Grant's eighth album. It was birthed during a dark period of Natalie's life that included a battle with postnatal depression and her father's cancer diagnosis. She admitted to NewReleaseTuesday that it wasn't an easy song to write: "The day that I went to write Hurricane'—which was the very first song for the album—I was going to the studio, and it was literally drudgery for me," she said.
