The Slot Tech Lyrics

The Slot Tech
  • This song was mentioned in interviews from mid 2011 through to mid 2012 in the lead-up to the release of Battle Born. Despite being referred to a number of times, it was omitted from the final tracklisting. The seven-and-a-half minute epic concerns the men who service the thousands of slot machines and one-armed bandits in Brandon Flowers' Las Vegas hometown. He told Q magazine: "My wife has family who are slot techs. We all know people employed in the casinos and I have worked there myself. It's a great way to tell stories about ordinary folk in extraordinary circumstances."

    California Girls Lyrics

Well East coast girls are hip
I really dig those styles they wear
And the Southern girls with the way they talk
They knock me out when I'm down there

The Mid-West farmer's daughters really make you feel alright
And the Northern girls with the way they kiss
They keep their boyfriends warm at night

I wish they all could be California Girls
I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California girls

The West coast has the sunshine
And the girls all get so tanned
I dig a french bikini on Hawaii island dolls
By a palm tree in the sand

I been all around this great big world
And I seen all kinds of girls
Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the States
Back to the cutest girls in the world

I wish they all could be California girls
I wish they all could be California
I wish they all could be California girls

I wish they all could be California girls
I wish they all could be California girls
I wish they all could be California girls

    California Girls
  • Beach Boys Mike Love and Brian Wilson wrote this song celebrating the women of California. Along with surfing and cars, girls were a common topic in many of The Beach Boys songs, and part of the California mythos that was so enticing to young people in other parts of America.

Wilson wrote the music, and Love came up with the lyrics. Regarding his way with words, Love told us: "Ever since I can remember I've always been intrigued by poetry and literature. So that's always been something that I've immersed myself in since childhood. I'd always get really good grades in English literature and American literature and all that kind of thing. Whereas my math skills weren't exactly upgraded." (Here's our full interview with Mike Love .)
  • Brian Wilson said of this song when he spoke to Goldmine in 2011: "I came up the introduction first. I'm still really proud of that introduction. It has a classical feel. I wrote the song 'California Girls' in the same key as the introduction. It took me some time. I wanted to write a song that had a traditional country and western left hand piano riff, like an old country song from the early '50s. I wanted to get something that had kind of a jumpy feeling to it in the verses."
  • Structurally, this uses a contrasting verse-chorus form.
  • Lead vocals on this song were by Mike Love, but you can also hear Bruce Johnston on the track along with Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Dennis Wilson and Al Jardine. Johnston was brought in to tour with the group when Brian Wilson decided to stay off the road, and this was his first vocal appearance on a Beach Boys song.
  • Drummer Hal Blaine and bass player Carol Kaye played on this. They were two of the first-call Los Angeles studio musicians known for working with Phil Spector and playing on many hits of the era. According to Kaye, Brian Wilson, who was himself a bass player, always had the bass parts written out for her, and "California Girls" was the only song where she was able to get a lick in that Brian didn't write. She says the bass part is reminiscent of a country song called "Tumbling Tumbleweeds."

Other musicians to play on this track include:
    Jerry Cole - guitar
    Billy Strange - guitar
    Howard Roberts - guitar
    Lyle Ritz - acoustic bass
    Leon Russell - piano
    Al DeLory - organ
    Steven Kreisman - saxophone
    Jay Migliori - saxophone
    Jack Nimitz - saxophone
    Roy Caton - trumpet
    Frank Capp - vibraphone
  • David Lee Roth released his own version in 1985 as his first solo single (he would leave Van Halen a short time later). The video featured a lineup of beautiful women and got loads of airplay on MTV. It set the tone for Roth's solo career as he perpetuated his image as a hedonistic party boy (not much of a change from his days in Van Halen). Carl Wilson from The Beach Boys sang backup on Roth's version, which hit #3 in the US.
  • Paul McCartney conceived The Beatles song "Back In The U.S.S.R." as a Soviet version of "California Girls." He got the idea on a trip to India, where along with Mike Love of The Beach Boys, he was studying Transcendental Meditation. Love told us: "Paul came down to the breakfast table one morning saying, 'Hey, Mike, listen to this.' And he starts strumming and singing, 'Back in the U.S.S.R.,' the verses. And I said, 'Well, Paul, what you ought to do is talk about the girls around Russia, Ukraine girls and then Georgia on my mind, and that kind of thing.' Which he did."
  • A problem with writing a song like this is that it's hard to top. Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2015, Brian Wilson talked about trying to write songs: "I sit at the piano and try, but all I want to do is rewrite 'California Girls.' How am I gonna do something better than that?"

  • The song title is an acronym for 'Girl Under You.' Gaga revealed to Stylist that she wrote this tune as a "new-age feminist" and explained that the track deals with embracing the female image. "Any kind of feminist has valid views for herself about what it means to be a feminist, but, as a new-age feminist, I would say I quite like the transference of strength I feel by submitting to a man – being under him," she said. "I actually wrote a song about it on my album, it's called 'GUY' and it stands for 'Go Under You'. So wearing make-up, smelling delicious and having suckable, kissable, edible things between your limbs is something I find strengthening because I know that when I pick the right guy, I can let him have it."
  • The song's music video was filmed at Hearst Castle, the former home of William Randolph Hearst located near San Simeon, California. Clocking in at 11 minutes, 46 seconds -it exceeds Gaga's nine-and-a-half minute clip for "Telephone." Andy Cohen and The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills stars make cameos in the hedonistic visual, whilst Gaga herself is listed as the director. "You have to [crack the whip] to keep the pace going," she told MTV News. "We had our work cut out for us with this video. It was a very big production. We shot for six days."

No Distance Left To Run Lyrics

    It's over
You don't need to tell me
I hope you're with someone who makes you
feel safe in your sleeping tonight
I won't kill myself, trying to stay in your life
I got No Distance Left To Run

    When you see me
Please turn your back and walk away
I don't want to see you
Cause I know the dreams that you keep is wearing me
When your coming down, think of me here
I got no distance left to run

It's over, I knew it would end this way
I hope you're with someone who makes you feel
That this life is the night
And it settles down, stays around
    Spends more time with you
I got no distance left to run

    Casual Affair Lyrics

    Hey, a Casual Affair
    That could go anywhere
    And only for tonight

    Take any moment, any time
    A lover on the left
    A sinner on the right

    Lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair (Hush-hush, don't you say a word)
    Lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair

    Break involuntary ties
    A secret so the spies
    Could never find us out

Stay for as long as you have time
So the mess that we'll become
    Leaves something to talk about

    Just lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair (Hush-hush, don't you say a word)
    Lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair

(I did it, I did it, I did it... I did it again)

    Lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair (Hush-hush, don't you say a word)
    Lay in the atmosphere
    A casual affair

    Casual Affair
  • Panic used to be renowned for their less-than-straightforward song titles like "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage" and "There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet." However on Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die! the names of the songs are far less random. Vocalist Brendon Urie explained during a Reddit Q&A: "I forget some of the longer titles that have nothing to do with the song itself. So I concentrate on making titles that sound cool on their own and basing a song off of them."
  • The YouTube version of the song samples the quote "Looks innocent enough, doesn't it? But sometimes there are dangers involved that never meet the eye. No matter where you meet a stranger, be careful if they are too friendly." It is taken from the 1961 public domain anti-gay film Boys Beware. The clip does not feature on the album version of the song as Panic were unable to get the sample cleared.

Album: Wreck Of The Day (Japanese Edition)
    Released: 2005

    Drink Me Lyrics

    Drink Me
  • The title comes from the legendary fantasy book Alice In Wonderland, where Alice finds a bottle with the words "Drink Me" on it that changes her shape when she drinks it. In the song, Anna uses the "Drink Me" under the pretense that if you drink enough then you will disappear completely. Anna explained that it was inspired by another book, East Of Eden by famous author John Steinbeck. The main character in the book has a necklace with a bottle of poison that is used to slowly poison herself. The book also makes some connections to Alice In Wonderland.
  • This references famous self-destructive artists and people including depressed Rock songwriting prodigy Kurt Cobain; Jazz master John Coltrane, who died of the excesses he had in his youth; popular '60s Blues/Rock singer Janis Joplin, who died of drug excess; respected author Sylvia Plath, who killed herself; and Marilyn Monroe whose death is disputed and may have killed herself or overdosed. The song includes some ideas about insecurity, human thought, and mortality.
  • This accompanies the acoustic rendition of "Catalyst" as the bonus tracks available on the Japanese import version of Anna Nalick's debut album Wreck Of The Day. Another Nalick song not available on her US debut album is "Home," a B-side with the acoustic "Catalyst" on the Australian single for "Breathe (2AM)."

Raven - On And On Lyrics and Youtube Music Videos

    Album: Stay Hard
    Released: 1985

    On And On Lyrics

    On And On
  • Raven is a British Heavy Metal band that released four albums on the independent UK label Neat Records before signing a deal with Atlantic that was supposed to be their entry into the American market. Raven had built a vociferous fan base and found themselves in the vanguard of the genre - their 1983 opening act Metallica cites them as one of the best there was.

The Stay Hard album marked a stylistic turning point for the band, however, as they softened their sound and image in an attempt to get on popular radio and MTV. But where Def Leppard and Quiet Riot succeeded, Raven could not. The crossover never came, and it eroded their core fan base. "Being that goal of coming into America, there was a lot of pressure and a lot of bad influence," their frontman John Gallagher said in our 2013 interview. Raven soldiered on, but never really recovered from this foray into Pop Metal.
  • The video for this song was never big on MTV, but has racked up plenty of views on YouTube. Curiously, the band is wearing football gear - the American kind. This was a bit of pandering by these Brits, but the original idea was to incorporate footage from NFL films, which would have tied it all together. "We went to the facility in Jersey, met all the guys, had all these great ideas," John Gallagher explained. "It wasn't an outrageous amount of money we asked for the video, but the record company said, 'Nope. We're not giving you that.' They basically dressed us up as clowns and then refused to support that."
  • Some songs come quickly to the writer and seem to write themselves. This isn't one of them. John Gallagher, who wrote the song with his guitarist/brother Mark and drummer Rob "Wacko" Hunter, told us the story:

"We knew it was magic, the song. It was one of the hardest ones we've ever had to do. A lot of technical problems. Mark [guitarist Mark Gallagher] was playing a guitar with bad intonation, and there were a lot of suspended chords on that. It got to the point where he just threw it across the room and Mark said, "That's it, I'm going to the bar! I'm done."

That first time we'd done so many vocals; there were about 18 to 20 tracks of vocals, and it was all me - it was all done in the old fashioned way of singing it, three part harmony or what have you. Just double, triple, quadruple, over and over again. It took a long time compared to everything else, but we just knew the song was that good.

    Suffer Little Children Lyrics

Over the moor, take me to the moor
    Dig a shallow grave
    And I'll lay me down

Over the moor, take me to the moor
    Dig a shallow grave
    And I'll lay me down

Lesley-Anne, with your pretty white beads
Oh John, you'll never be a man
And you'll never see your home again
Oh Manchester, so much to answer for

Edward, see those alluring lights ?
Tonight will be your very last night

A woman said : "I know my son is dead
I'll never rest my hands on his sacred head"

Hindley wakes and Hindley says :
Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says :
"Oh, wherever he has gone, I have gone"

    But fresh lilaced moorland fields
Cannot hide the stolid stench of death
    Fresh lilaced moorland fields
Cannot hide the stolid stench of death

    Hindley wakes and says :
Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, Hindley wakes, and says :
"Oh, whatever he has done, I have done"

But this is no easy ride
    For a child cries :

"Oh, find me...find me, nothing more
We are on a sullen misty moor
We may be dead and we may be gone
But we will be, we will be, we will be, right by your side
    Until the day you die
    This is no easy ride
We will haunt you when you laugh
Yes, you could say we're a team
    You might sleep
    You might sleep
    You might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !
    Oh, you might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !
    You might sleep
BUT YOU WILL NEVER DREAM !"

Oh Manchester, so much to answer for

I'll haunt you when you laugh
Oh, I'll haunt you when you laugh

    Suffer Little Children
  • Between 1963 and 1965, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley abducted and murdered five children in and around Manchester, England. They buried several bodies on Saddleworth Moor, north of Manchester, resulting in the case becoming known as the Moors Murders. The tragedy had a great impact on The Smiths' front man, Morrissey, who was not only from the area, but the same age as some of the victims. He was inspired to write "Suffer Little Children" after reading Beyond Belief: A Chronicle of Murder and its Detection, a semi-fictionalized account of the Moors Murders by Emlyn Williams.

Relatives of the murder victims disapproved of this song and The Smiths album was subsequently banned from several UK stores. Morrissey insisted he did not mean to cause offense, however, and later befriended Ann West, the mother of the murder victim, Lesley Ann Downey, after he wrote to her explaining the song was in fact a tribute to the children.
  • The song title alludes to a phrase in the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 19, verse 14, in which Jesus condemns his disciples for turning away a group of children: "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven."
  • This song was played live only once, at The Smiths' first ever gig at The Ritz in Manchester on October 4, 1982.
  • In 2009, Morrissey contributed a story called "The Bleak Moor Lies" to The Dark Monarch: Magic & Modernity in British Art - a collection of essays on the occult, compiled by the British art institution, Tate - about a group of friends who travel to Saddleworth Moor and encounter a ghost.
  • Courtney Love's band, Hole, have been known to cover this song live.
  • This song closes The Smiths' self-titled debut album, which propelled the band into the limelight in 1984. In 2003, the album was ranked at #481 on Rolling Stone magazine's "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list.

    Didn't help me understand

But I had to get it worked out
    Had nobody who could help
So then in the end it turned out
That I had to do it
    By myself

That's the game of rags to riches
Dogs and bitches hunt for fame
Until you think you know which way to turn

Make the day all the switches, wicked witches fan the flame
Careful what you touch in case you burn

Queenie Eye queenie eye who's got the ball

    Queenie Eye
  • This song was produced by Paul Epworth, who has worked with such Pop stars as Adele and Rihanna. The track was one of three that Epworth produced for New.

The producer's approach echoed the three experimental, improvised Fireman albums McCartney has made with former Killing Joke member, Martin "Youth" Glover. The former Beatle told The Sun: "Yes, Paul knew I'd done Fireman and he said, 'OK, I'd really like to work like that.' That was his favorite way. So Queenie Eye, Save Us and Road are the the three tracks made from the ground up with lots of improvisation and are the closest to Fireman."
  • The song is based on a children's playground game. "Now this song, 'Queenie Eye,' is based on a game we used to play when I was kids," McCartney explained. "You got to remember that's a long time ago and basically in kind of a poor area I was from. What you did you entertain yourself was go out in the street and play street games. There wasn't that much traffic, so you were pretty safe. And one of the games was called 'Queenie Eye.'"

"What used to happen is one person would turn away from us and throw a ball over his head which one of us would catch," he continued. "And then we would say, 'Queenie Eye, Queenie Eye, who's got the ball? I haven't got it. It isn't in my pocket. O-U-T spells out.' And when we said, 'Out,' he could turn around ... or she could turn around and look at us and try to work out which one of us had caught the ball, which, of course, we all pretended to have behind our backs. Anyway, so that was ... I just liked the rhythm. 'Queenie Eye, Queenie Eye.' I ended up in the studio and we made into this next song. Here ya go."
  • The song's music video was filmed at Abbey Road Studios and sees McCartney recording the track in what he thinks is an empty studio (Studio 2). As the clip progresses, various celebrities make cameo appearances including Johnny Depp and Kate Moss, who are former lovers. Also featuring are Jude Law, Sean Penn, Jeremy Irons, Chris Pine, Tom Ford, Alice Eve, James Corden, Gary Barlow, Tracey Ullman and yep that's, Meryl Streep dancing.
  • McCartney performed this song at the Grammy Awards in 2014, backed by Ringo Starr on drums. Earlier in the evening, McCartney won a Grammy for Best Rock Song for his work on "Cut Me Some Slack."

You think you're denying me of something
    Well I've got plenty
You're the one who's missing out
    But you won't notice

    'Til after five years
    If you'll live that long
    You'll wake up
    All loveless

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    I'm so bored with cowards
    That say they want
    Then they can't handle

    You can't handle love
    You can't handle love
    You just can't handle

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    What's so scary
    Not a threat in sight
    You just can't handle
    You can't handle love

    You can't handle love, baby
    You can't handle love
    It's obvious
    You can't handle

    I dare you
    To take me on
    I dare you
    To show me your palms

    I'm so bored of cowards
    That say they want
    Then they can't handle

    You can't handle love, baby
    You can't handle love
    It's obvious
    You can't handle

I dare you, I dare you
I dare you, I dare you

  • This is about a reluctant and hesitant lover. Although Björk claims it is not specific to anyone, many believe it is about Goldie, the British "jungle" DJ whom Björk dated after breaking up with Tricky.
  • This song first appeared on Post tour setlists in 1995, originally titled "I Dare You." Björk didn't like the original arrangement, so she took it back into the studio and reworked it for "Homogenic."

    Scared
  • This is a hidden track that plays at the end of Paul McCartney's 16th solo studio album New. The song is available on the deluxe edition in the UK, USA, France and Japan.
  • The song is one of several tracks on New that were inspired by Macca's wife Nancy Shevell. Speaking on the UK TV show Daybreak, the former Beatle admitted it took a lot of courage to express his emotions for the American brunette, whom he married in 2011. "I started writing these new ones a couple of years ago, when I was first going out with Nancy. I used to ring her up each morning and I knew because of the time difference ' she was in New York ' that I had a few hours to write something. Then I would ring her up and then say to her, 'Do you want to hear a song?' It was a good motivation for me to write something," he recalled.

Paul added: "'My song 'Scared' is about being scared to say I love you to someone. I think particularly for guys, it's not easy to say with conviction, so I was playing with that idea."

    Mexicola Lyrics

Setting sun deals hands of gold
    There's velvet eyes in Mexico
    Just a fall away
And all she said was true

Speak in tongues, speak in lies
    Drooling livers, born to die
It's a wonder that those guns don't point at you

    Oh oh oh oh

    [Chorus: x2]
    Keep sayin', go on,
    Keep sayin', go on,
    Keep sayin',
    You will live forever

Point and shoot, I know just what you mean
In a world that's full of shit and gasoline, baby
One dog's dead one's on the phone
Just leave a lung or leave it alone
It's that same on song again
I hate it 'cause it's true

    Oh oh oo oo

    [Chorus: x2]
