Graceless Lyrics

Graceless
Is there a powder to erase this?
Is it dissolvable and tasteless?
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless

I'm trying, but I'm graceless
Don't have the sunny side to face this
I am invisible and weightless
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless

I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine when I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen

Graceless
I figured out how to be faithless
But it will be a sheme to waste this
You can't imagine how I hate this
Graceless

I'm trying, but I've gone
Through the glass again
Just come and find me
God loves everybody, don't remind me
I took the medicine and I went missing
Just let me hear your voice, just let me listen

All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means

I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us

Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the place
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
Grace

There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows
There's a science to walking through windows without you

All of my thoughts of you
Bullets through rotten fruit
Come apart at the seams
Now I know what dying means

I am not my rosy self
Left my roses on my shelf
Take the wild ones, they're my favorites
It's the side effects that save us

Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the base
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
Grace

Grace
Put the flowers you find in a vase
If you're dead in the mind it will brighten the base
Don't let them die on the vine, it's a waste
Grace

Graceless
  • Matt Berniger ruminates on mortality on this drum-heavy song. "God loves everybody, don't remind me," he sings. Berninger's relationship to the afterlife is often fragile. On another Trouble Will Find Me track, "Don't Swallow the Cap" he sings about his fear of leaving his loved ones behind.
  • The National premiered the song during an April 5, 2013 concert at the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin.
  • The song's black and white music video finds The National getting drunk and getting up to all sorts of mischief, which includes riding bikes into a pool and shooting off a potato gun. The clip was shot at frontman Matt Berninger's parent's house in Cincinnati, Ohio and found the band suffering a series of mishaps. Bassist Scott Devendorf ended up with a minor concussion, guitarist Bryce Dessner injured his back, and Berninger suffered a face injury whilst riding his bike into a swimming pool and hitting the water hard with his face all three times. "I had glasses on," he explained to Rolling Stone "I had bruises around my eyes where the glasses hit. It was the most brutal video we've ever done. It was really fun, but it cost us. No one died, though."
  • The National made their Saturday Night Live debut on March 8, 2014 when they performed this song and "I Need My Girl" during the show. They'd previously played "Graceless" on The Colbert Report and Jimmy Kimmel Live!.

    San Tropez Lyrics

As I reach for a peach
    Slide a rind down behind
    The sofa in San Tropez
    Breakin' a stick
With a brick on the sand
    Ridin' a wave
In the wake of an old sedan

    Sleepin' alone in the
    Drone of the darkness,
    Scratched by the sand that
    Fell from my love,
Deep in my dreams and I
    Still hear her callin'
    If you're alone
    I'll come home

    Backward and home-bound
    The pigeon, the dove
    Gone with the wind
And the rain, on an airplane
    Owning a home
    With no silver spoon
    I'm drinking champagne
    Like a good tycoon

    Sooner than wait for
    A break in the weather,
    I'll gather my far-flung
    Thoughts together
    Speeding away
On the wind to a new day
    And if you're alone
    I'll come home

And I pause for a while
    By a country style
And listen to the things they say
    Diggin' for gold
With a hoe in my hand
    Open a book
Take a look at the way things stand

    And you're leading me down
To the place by the sea
    I hear your soft voice
    Calling to me
    Making a date for
    Later by phone
    And if you're alone
    I'll come home

  • The album was loosely based on Pink Floyd's life around this time. The whole band went to the island San Tropez with their then-girlfriends and had a great peaceful time, hence the peaceful nature of this song and the title.

    Afraid Lyrics

    Afraid
  • This song was written and originally recorded by the German singer-songwriter Nico for her 1970 album Desertshore. Neko Case explained to American Songwriter magazine why she decided to cover the tune: "I have always loved the song," she said, "and sometimes you need a reason to cover something and I thought, 'That song is just so comforting even though it's so sad.' And you know, that song has been comforting me forever. And from a technical standpoint, I thought, 'Well, I can't sound anything like Nico, I don't have her incredible low range.' So I didn't do it on a piano the way she does it, I tried to do it differently."

"But people focus on very different parts of Nico's career," she continued, "like the Velvet Underground periods and Chelsea Girl and records like Desertshore don't get their due. Or not that they don't get their due, I just don't think people are as familiar with it, because it is odd."

    Wah-wah-a-watusi
See'mon and take a chance and get-a with this dance
    Wah-wah-a-watusi
Oh baby, it's the dance made for romance (shoo-bop, shoo-bop, ahh)
Baby, baby, when you do the twist
Never, never do you get yourself kissed
'Cause you're always dancing far apart
    Watusi girl is-a really smart
    Wah-a-wah, wah-a-watusi
See'mon and take a chance and get-a with this dance (shoo-bop, shoo-bop, ahh)
Baby, when you do the fly, your arms are wasting waving in the sky
See'mon and hold me like a lover should
The watusi makes you feel so good
    Wah-a-wah, wah-a-watusi
Oh baby, it's the dance made for romance
    Yea! (Shoo-bop, shoo-bop, ahh)
Baby, baby, that's the way it goes
Nothing happens when you mash potatoes
I just gotta fall in love with you
Watusi is the dance to do
    Wah-a-wah, wah-a-watusi
See'mon and take a chance and get-a with this dance
    Wah, wah-a Watusi
Oh baby, it's the dance made for romance

    The Wah-Watusi
  • This song was one of the many dance-craze songs of the early '60s. It was the follow-up to Dee Dee Sharp's dance-craze hit "Mashed Potato Time."
  • This was the Orlons' first national hit. Their two previous singles failed to chart.
  • There were three songs about the Watusi dance. This was the second song and biggest hit about the dance. The first was "The Watusi" (by the Vibrations, US #25), and the third was "El Watusi" (by Ray Barretto, US #17).

    Man Lyrics

    Man
  • This rollicking rocker finds Case taking on the subject of gender roles:

    "I'm a man's man, I've always been.
But make no mistake what I've invested in.
The woman's heart is the watermark by which I measure everything."

Case told The Guardian: "I think I just want balance. I want to be equal parts man and woman, no matter what I am at the gynecologist."
  • That's M. Ward of She & Him playing the fuzzed-out guitar.
  • The song grew out of Case's observations about the inflexible way people often respond when she refers to herself as a guy – as in, "I'm the kind of guy who..."

She told Rolling Stone: "Everybody wants to remind you that you're a girl. And I'm like, not if I don't want to be. I grew up in America, man."

Case added that the song is also an attack on modern politically correct attitudes. "The Seventies went out of its way to show little girls as firemen and stuff," she said. "Let's not hash it out and make it firewoman or fireperson."

    The Best Deceptions Lyrics

    I heard about the trip.
    I heard about your souvenirs.
I heard about the cool breeze in the cool nights
    And the cool guys
    That you spent them with.
I guess I should have heard of them from you
I guess I should have heard of them from you

Don't you see, don't you see,
    That the charade is over?
    And all The Best Deceptions
And the clever cover story awards
    Go to you.
So kiss me hard 'cause this'll be the last time that I let you.

    I heard about your regrets.
I heard that you were feeling sorry.
I heard from someone that you wished you could
    Set things right between us.
I guess I should have heard of that from you
I guess I should have heard of that from you

So don't you see, don't you see,
    That the charade is over?
    And all the best deceptions
And the clever cover story awards
    Go to you.
So kiss me hard 'cause this'll be the last time that I let you.

    You will be back someday,
And this awkward kiss that tells of other people's
    Lips
    Will be of service
    In giving you away.

So don't you see, don't you see,
    That the charade is over?
    And all the best deceptions
And the clever cover story awards
    Go to you.
So kiss me hard, 'cause this'll be the last time that I let you.

    I'm waiting for blood
    To flow to my fingers
I'll be all right when my hands get warm.
    Ignoring the phone,
    I'd rather say nothing,
I'd rather you never heard my voice.
    You're calling too late,
    Too late to be gracious.
And you do not warrant long good-byes.
    You're calling too late,
    You're calling too late.

    The Best Deceptions
  • In this song, Chris Carrabba sings about a girlfriend cheating on him: "I heard about the cool breeze and the cool nights and the cool guys that you spent them with. I guess I should have heard of them from you."

The line, "Don't you see that the charade is over and all the best deceptions and the clever cover story awards go to you," means that she doesn't have to act like she cares anymore - that's the charade. The clever cover story awards go to her because she is good at making up a lie to tell him so she doesn't get in trouble.
  • Carrabba described this song on his MTV Unplugged appearances as being about "feeling bad and feeling better."

    Stay Young Lyrics

    Young, Stay Young
Stay strong, don't get on with it
    Gone, way gone with it
    It's all done with it
    You're all done

All my friends are running to live
    On corners
Hurters and the haters and the faders
    And the mourners

The world goes to its work and it heads not gentle
And what it breaks you down into
All my friends are looking in life
And it's a lone, lone, lone, lonely child
I said that when you met I was just tired
I said it to know, I said it in silence

    Young, stay young
And face y'all now, our time to quit
    Strong, stay strong
Mind blowing that y'all drum sick

All these hateful people judging and hand bringing
Lord, why don't you bury me in all they call sinning?
Open up your heart, show me the place where love is missing
How long have you been missing love?
I said all creation posing and diving up between them
Now you have to live it up because my head is spinning

    I try, try hard
    To talk with you
    And talk your god
    Of love, of trust
    Just me and your love

And I call to all my friends
All the cracked could set a thriller
All the hand inside a tiller
And a hundred job a biller
    Settled by the stone
I was rejected by the builder
There was drinking out the thought
They carried from the bloody building
Never let it be said that it wasn't really
The shit I know you're missing, girl
Then I'll pass the edges of the earth and make it wider
    I see you're crying
Don't you know it's killing me?

I climb, climb up, way up
    To see the sun
    One, one job
    One life, one love
    Is all we got

    Young, stay young
    Get tough
    Get hard with this
    Young, stay young
    Heart racing, sky raining
Young, I said let it come
    Let it come
    Stay young
    Stay young

Down Down the Deep River Lyrics

Spit into the center of your hometown, there are leaves in the street,
and there are friends around you now. All the days of your life in a line.
All the way it seemed by 89

But it's not all right. It's not even close to all right.

Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)
Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)

We lie awake at night in a tent and I say,
Tell me about your uncle and his friend
because they seem like very bad men.
Well we oughtta keep away from them.
Bend in the road back there, we saw the place to go.
Tell me 'bout the greatest show or the greatest movie you know
or the greatest song that you taped from off the radio.
Play it again and again it cuts off at the ending though.
Tell me I'm always gonna be your best friend.
Now you said it one time, why don't you say it again?
All the way down the line to where the telephone ends
come on and shout it on down the wire.

    And it's not all right.
It's not even close to all right.

Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)
Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)

And as the rescue party, the volunteer team ah,
they're just kids of eighteen, and it's the worst thing
they've seen they're standing all around that tree,
and I'm so sorry that I can't stop crying.

    (Oh, I know.)

Shivering from the late fall cold,
I felt like a solid ghost.
    I ran and then I couldn't slow.
My father found me though, my father took me home.
He said, Oh, son, I saw you get knocked down,
and I ran out I bet your head was spinning.
With that bright pain you stunned,
when you've only just begun to be only just beginning.
Tossed in the viper pit, all those feelings and fears,
and all that difficult shit in all those tender years.
There was something in the air; something gathered in the air.
    Something singing in the wind.

I'll be your fighter and you'll be my mirror.
And you'll be all right because I'll be right here.
Oh kid, now I'm not going anywhere.
I swear I'll try to not be going anywhere.

Though it's not all right. It is so far from all right.
We'll make it into a choice somehow.
    I don't know, but you'll have a choice somehow.

Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)
We can never go back; we can only remember
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)

Maybe they told you 'bout the summer sky,
maybe they said there's a great gold spirit in the summer sky
or all your friends (all your best, best friends)
are gonna gather around your bed at night.
Well that'll make it all right because it is still so far from all right. Oh, kid, I know.

Down a hall in your house, down a road in December
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)
Up the stairs four flights, son; can you feel my heart shiver?
(Down, down, down the deep river, down, down, down the deep river)
Wakin' in the dawn with that dream getting dimmer and dimmer.

I said, Are we going down the deep river? Down the deep river?
Why don't you say you still see it, say you remember? Are we going down?
Are we going down the deep river? Because I know it's scary, baby.

    Nothing But Heartaches Lyrics

Nothing But Heartaches, Oo, Nothing but heartaches,
    he brings nothing but heartaches.
Oo, I can't break away from his arms.
I can't break away from his charms.
I can't break away from his kiss, 'cause his kiss I surely miss.
All my life I needed someone to need me, so I do my very best to please him.
But the more and more I care, the more of him other girls share.
When I need a hand to hold, that's the time he leaves me all alone,

Just keeps me, keeps me cryin' myself to sleep.
Nothing but heartaches (Oo-) Oo, nothing but heartaches,
But I can't break away, Oh, no, Keep a loving him more each day.
Oo, I can't break away from his arms.
I can't break away from his charms.
I can't break away from his kiss, 'cause his kiss I'll surely miss.

To him I'm loyal, to him I'm true.
Why can't he be the same way too?
But the more my love has grown, the less love he has shown.
He makes promises he doesn't keep.
Sometimes I don't see him all week.

    Nothing But Heartaches
  • As this song missed just one position of the US Top 10, it put the Supremes' string of consecutive #1 American hits to an end. Like the four out of their five consecutive #1 American hits, this song is about heartache and/or unrequited love. When this failed to make even the Top 10 (let alone reach #1), Holland/Dozier/Holland (the Supremes' songwriters and producers) had finally realized that the themes of the Supremes' songs had begun to be monotonous. After the song's disappointing result on the charts, Motown president Berry Gordy sent a memo all around offices of Motown that read: "We will release nothing less than Top Ten product on any artist; and because the Supremes' worldwide acceptance is greater than the other artists, on them we will only release #1 records." When Holland/Dozier/Holland received the message, they decided to try a new theme for the Supremes. Their result was the Supremes' next hit "II Hear a Symphony," which brought the Supremes back to the #1 spot.
  • The original title of this song was "I Can't Break Away."

    If Music Could Talk Lyrics

    Make sure!
Taking cover in the bunker tonight
    Waiting for Bo Diddley's headlights
    I feel alright
    Gotta Fender Stratosphere
    I can do anything tonight
It's in neon lights an' global rights
    Frank? He's on the phone
There ain't no German girl outside
But who cares when its warm inside?
    With music
    Special mystery of music tragically
    Exchanging slaves for majesties
    Modern waves of tragedy
Packing a two piece colt pair of shoots
    A shiny grey Mexican suit
The blue eyed traffic can sashay by
'Cause tonight the sailor boys have hit Shanghai
The kick-out traffic goes creaking by
I smash my glass and shout shanghai
My drummer friend comes shooting by
He said Errol Flynn will never die
Oh no! Who am I to question why?
    And are you lonesome tonight
And do ya need a country cowboy
Who's just thin and tight in those
    Br' bus depot jeans
With a squirt resistant stud stud
    Hey stoner

Get over there in the spliff bunker one
Because London Bridge was sold somehow
But it was too old anyhow
When Uncle Sam has broken down
We'll make him down in old Japan
    Say ye'

Well there ain't no better blend
Than Joe Ely and his Texas Men
    Where the wind blows
I ain't seen none like that scenery
You can see from a bus if you pay the price

    Wave my arms around
Flag one of those taxi's maybe
I saw a girl somewhere somehow
Forever sticks in my mind somehow
    I've just got three lines
    And a pair of two's
Like a lucky roll of dice that you
    You cast

    If Music Could Talk!
    Which means
    Whatever your mind can bring
Like the apple fell off the tree
Pah! Fell right on his head
    Yeah many years ago

There was a man who said
    I am a shaman
    A voodoo shaman
Got in trouble so he's going out
    Mixing up and Haiti! Oh!
    And the crickets
    Buddy Holly said it was
    Br' br' yee'

If music could talk you know

    I feel kinda lonely
    Standing out on the floor
    Of Electric Ladyland

'cause this is a good question Samson
    Are you partly Arabic?

    Chi man! Whatcho all about

    I don't want to I can't hope to
Say it all in one go
    Occasionally once or twice
A day I feel alive enough to say
Let's hear what the drummer man's
    Got to say about
He said is it Errol Flynn's birthday or not?
    Sept twelfth until October
    If they pack two piece
    Colt pair of shoots
We got the shiny grey Mexican suits
I'm just wasting a great big
    Corporation and the entire fund
    The girders of Wall Street
    And the temples of money
    And the high priests
    Of the expense account
And I'm wasting the whole thing
    I come down in Yamaha-ha
They make the best pianos-time to step-up

    If Music Could Talk
  • The backing track to "If Music Could Talk" is in fact another one of the songs on the Sandinista! album: "Shepherd's Delight," which was recorded at Pluto Studios two months previously with producer Mikey Dread. The band decided to revisit the track, and singer Joe Strummer added a stream-of-consciousness set of lyrics about New York city, including a plethora of references to Joe Ely , Errol Flynn, singer Bo Diddley (whom The Clash had toured with in 1979), Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight?"

There are also personal references to The Clash themselves, including the Electric Lady studios they had worked, lighting engineer Warren "Stoner" Steadman, and his own "spliffbunker," which was a nest-type contraption Strummer built in whichever studio the band were recording in out of flight cases where he would sit and write songs in peace whilst recording took place elsewhere in the studio.
  • Production tricks abound on this song, as they do throughout the album. In this case, Joe Strummer double-tracked his vocals, putting one track in the left channel and another in the right to create an all-encompassing sound. Gary Barnacle, session musician and longtime friend of the band, added jazzy saxophone interludes when the song was recorded in Wessex studios in August 1980.
  • As it's possible to tell from the backing track complexity, this never featured in The Clash's live set, probably because the band just wouldn't be able to do it justice in concert.

    Castles Made Of Sand Lyrics

    Castles Made Of Sand
  • This is one of Hendrix' most autobiographical and personal songs. He hated talking about his past, and avoided it during press conferences and interviews.
  • Hendrix played all of the lead guitar parts backwards, then rewound the recording of the lead guitar parts to the song to get that effect you hear in the beginning and in the middle of the song.
  • Hendrix' mother was a Cherokee Indian, and in this song he identifies with his heritage as a Native American.
  • Hendrix read the words for this song as a poem instead of singing them.
  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers were all big fans of Jimi Hendrix and often perform this song live.
