Boomerang

Lyfe Jennings was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison following a violent altercation with an ex-girlfriend in 2008. He penned this song whilst behind bars. The track finds him considering the ramifications of bad behavior when young. "It came together when I had some time, some introspection on my life when I was incarcerated and wrote the song there," he told Artist Direct . The line, "Well tonight thank god it's him instead of me" is directed at Bono, the lead singer of U2. In the 1984, Band Aid song "Do They Know It's Christmas?," Bono sang the infamous line, "Well tonight thank god it's them instead of you." At the time One Way Ticket To Hell And Back was being recorded, lead singer Justin Hawkins and Bono quarreled after Bono gave Hawkins permission to sing his line in the remake of 'Do They Know It's Christmas" because Hawkins said Bono's voice was shaky after hearing him re-sing the line. Bono got upset and maintained that Hawkins stole the line from him and they have clashed ever since. Hawkins thought it would be funny to manipulate Bono's infamous line to deride him in song or possibly even write an entire song about his impending hair loss.

Ostensibly a love song about finding the one person in the world who just gets him, the tune also acts as a metaphor for the bigger issues that are going on in the world today. "This is the song that was really just an expression of gratitude for being alive and wanting to live every minute to the fullest," Franti said in our 2014 interview . "I guess I wanted to get the sound of what it means to be alive rather than the ideas of what it means to be alive. That's why right before the chorus it sounds like, 'Whooaaa,' and then just turns into a melody after that."

On the All People album, Franti worked extensively with outside songwriters for the first time. This song he wrote with the Australian songwriter/producer Adrian Newman, who worked with Franti on three other cuts as well: "Closer To You," "Say Goodbye" and "Long Ride Home."

"Shannon" was a song written about the passing of Beach Boy Carl Wilson's Irish Setter of the same name. The song went gold and became a worldwide hit. The second single, "Springtime Mama," sold just short of gold. This was Gross' first album and first hit on the new Lifesong Record label.

This song was a hit in the US in 1976, but is perhaps best known for being the subject of a legendary, profanity-laced tirade by American Top 40 radio show host Casey Kasem while recording an episode of the show in 1985. A listener had requested the song as a "Long Distance Dedication" (a regular feature of the AT40 show) to his own recently-deceased dog. Kasem was upset that the show's producers had placed the dedication immediately following the Pointer Sisters' hit "Dare Me," an up-tempo song that Kasem considered a poor lead-in to a sad song like "Shannon" - and he let the producers know of his displeasure in no uncertain terms. In the end, the dedication, and the mismatched songs, were presented as scripted in spite of Kasem's objection, but the outtake of his rant eventually surfaced as a bootleg recording. The so-called "Snuggles tape" (named for the dog to whom the dedication was made) contradicted Kasem's normally straight-laced, easygoing on-air persona, and provided an amusing footnote to his 18-year-long run as the show's original host.

The falsetto vocals on "Shannon" were written because Gross was a big fan of Beach Boy member Brian Wilson and was influenced by his singing style.

Underneath It All

No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani wrote this with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. They were introduced by Jimmy Iovine, who is good friends with Stewart and chairman of Interscope, which is No Doubt's label. The band came over to Stewart's apartment in London, and he and Gwen went to the kitchen with their acoustic guitars and completed the song in about 15 minutes. Stewart wrote of Stefani in The Dave Stewart Songbook : "She really has great melodic sensibility and uses her subconscious to express herself lyrically. She sings freeform stream-of-consciousness at first but there are always words that appear to be coming from an emotional place. She then quickly understands what she wants to say and it all falls into place. 'Underneath It All' was an example of this and I saw it happen in real time right there in my kitchen."

In our interview with Dave Stewart, he spoke about the difference between writing with his Eurythmics partner Annie Lennox, and writing with Stefani, who he had just met. Says Stewart: "Well, it's kind of weird. Because if I walk into a room to write with Gwen, Gwen comes with a lot of stuff attached to her, and I also come into a room with that. So the first 15 minutes usually is getting past that stuff. And then very quickly, and usually due to a certain courtship, you know like how a certain chord can change the temperature in a room? It evokes a certain emotion in me or in Gwen, and then it'll suddenly make us think about something that happened in her life, and something that she might want to talk about, something she might not want to talk about, but you can kind of hear what it is in the lyric and the melody. And soon, within an hour and a half it's as if you've known that person for years. And often, then, people start talking about all their private thoughts, and everything that's going on in their life usually comes rolling out."

In a 2002 interview in Rolling Stone, Stefani explained that her lyrics were inspired by her relationship with Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush, who she was madly in love with and later married. They spent some time in a part the previous day, and Stefani wrote in her journal: "You're lovely underneath it all."

Gwen Stefani and Dave Stewart hadn't met before the day they wrote this song, but they had a lot in common and bonded quickly. They both had intimate relationships with a band member who they broke up with, but continued working with: Stewart with Annie Lennox and Stefani with No Doubt bass player Tony Kanal. They share a love of Jamaican music, and are big fans of Sophie Muller, who has directed videos for Eurythmics and No Doubt.

This track features a rap by the Jamaican Dancehall deejay Lady Saw. In 2003 she became the first female deejay to win a Grammy when this won the Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with a Vocal.

Sophie Muller, who directed the video, wanted to show what Stefani was like "underneath it all." She explained to Music Video Wire : "She started off with tons of make-up and hair, kind of really over done like a stripper. As the video proceeds she loses her make up and at the end the make up and overdone look is gone. The idea was stripping back to being your simple self. We had to do it using visual metaphors. She was going to be talking her clothes off, but that made it too complicated. Instead we made it into sections where in each section she was less made up."

Muller enlisted the directing collaborative Logan to create special effects, like the band riding bicycles in Jamaica as a nod to Lady Saw's influence.

Fred Astaire

San Cisco is an Australian Indie-Pop band that formed in 2009 in Fremantle, Western Australia. The band consists of lead vocalist Jordi Davieson, guitarist Josh Biondillo, bassist Nick Gardner and drummer Scarlett Stevens. All members, except Stevens, share duties on keyboards.

This is a track from San Cisco's eponymous debut album. It finds Davieson singing: "Fred Astaire's the man for you." Gardner explained to Artist Direct : "This song is basically about thinking you're not good enough. The girl you're after has another guy nearby who seems better than you."

In a June 22, 2000 webchat on Björk.com, she explained how she came up with this song: "I guess waking up after having been in Spain for six months in the mountains with few people. It was kind of solitary. And it was April, and I had to walk in the morning, around the mountains. And spring just kicked in. It was definitely nature-inspired. On a more personal level. It's about when you have been too stubborn about giving love to one particular direction... you expect it back, like it's a bank or something. And kind of realizing that it's up to you what you give, but it's not up to you what you are given and where from."

The video was directed by Chris Cunningham, who drew on his adolescent obsession with robots to bring Björk's abstract vision to life. He is also directed the video for Madonna's "Frozen."

This was nominated for a Grammy and won several awards including Best Breakthrough Video and Special Effects at the 2000 MTV Video Awards.

Björk describing her songwriting technique in Q Magazine October 2007: "Sometimes the words will come out in one go. I went out for a walk in 1997 and 'All Is Full Of Love' came out at once."

Come Together

Sons of the Sea is a collaboration between Incubus frontman Brandon Boyd and producer Brendan O'Brien, who has manned the boards on several Incubus albums. Boyd penned lyrics for the project and sang while O'Brien wrote and played most of the music. The singer told Noisecreep : "[We were] two artists who had worked together before, but now in a completely different context. Every song we worked on was different from the next one. It was a process of continual discovery."

O'Brien was caught off guard a little bit with this song's subject matter. Boyd recalled to Noisecreep: "(He) was like, 'Can we do more songs like this? What's it about?' I'm like, 'It's about sex, it's about sex.' (laughs)."

Boyd used a specific film reference from his youth as a muse for the song. He told Fuse TV it was,"the scene in the movie Fast Times At Ridgemount High where Phoebe Cates comes out of the pool in slow motion, water spraying everywhere, and she undoes her bikini top to show the world the glory."
