Cheapskates Lyrics

I have been a washer up
An' he has been a scrubber up
An' I seen him a picking up
Dog ends in the rain
An' he has never read a book
Though I told him to take a look
He lifted his pool hall cue
For another game
But it ain't no modern miracle
That we found the golden rule
What you can't buy you gotta steal
An' what you say can't steal you better leave

I don't like to hang about
In this lonely room
'Cause London is for going out
And trying to hear a tune
But people come pouncing up to me
And say what are you doing here
You're supposed to be a star
Not a cheapskate bleeding queer

Like a load of rats from a sinking ship
You slag us down to save your hip
But you don't give me the benefit
Of your doubt
'Cause I'll bite it off and spit it out

We're Cheapskates anything'll do
We're cheapskates what are we supposed to do?
An' we can rock
Hey hey let's roll
An' we can walk
An' do the stroll

Just because we're in a group
You think we're stinking rich
'N we all got model girls
Shedding every stitch
'N You think the cocaine's flowing
Like a river up our noses
'N every sea will part for us
Like the red one did for Moses

Well I hope you make it one day
Just like you always said you would some day
And I'll get out my money and make a bet
That I'll be seein' you down the launderette

Cheapskates
  • The lyrics to this song are a thinly veiled attack on the music press and critics of the time who took aim at The Clash in late 1977 and early 1978, accusing them of selling out and becoming decadent Rock Stars in the wake of their signing to major label CBS and producing their first album. The band are clearly angry over the assumption that they would change as they became more famous ("But people come poncing up to me and say what are you doing here? You're supposed to be a star, not a cheapskate bleeding queer), and at what they see as critics attacking the band to save their own image ("Like a load of rats from a sinking ship, you slag us down to save your hip").
  • A latter verse is dedicated to claiming that The Clash don't have the Rock Star trappings of money, sex and drugs - ironically though, many close to the group claim that the band did indeed mix with drugs rather often during the time - indeed, drummer Topper Headon would later be fired from the group in 1983 because of problems with severe drug addictions. At the time of the album's release in 1978, guitarist Mick Jones admitted to Garry Bushell that "the song was written during a heavy period of drug-taking. The lyrics are meant to be a satire on that."
  • Cheapskates was introduced into The Clash's live set in June 1978, and was played for the rest of the year before being dropped just before their first US tour.

    Taylor Lyrics

They say Taylor was a good girl, never one to be late
Complain, express ideas in her brain
Working on the night shift, passing out the tickets
You're gonna have to pay her if you want to park here

Well mommy's little dancer is quite a little secret
Working on the streets now, never gonna keep it
It's quite an imposition and now she's only wishin'
That she would have listened to the words they said
    Poor Taylor

She just wanders around, unaffected by,
The winter winds here, she'll pretend that
She's somewhere else, so far and clear
About two thousand miles, from here

Well Peter Patrick pitter patters on the window,
The sunny silhouette won't let him in
And poor old Pete's got nothing 'cause he's been falling
And somehow sunny knows just where he's been

He thinks that singin' on Sunday's gonna save his soul
    Now that Saturday's gone
And sometimes he thinks that he's on his way,
But I can see, that his brake lights are on

He just wanders around, unaffected by,
The winter winds here, and he'll pretend that
He's somewhere else, so far and clear,
About two thousand miles from here

Such a tough enchilada, filled up with nada
Givin' what you gotta give to get a dollar bill
Used to be a limber chicken, times have been a ticking
Now she's finger lickin' to the man
With the money in his pocket, flying in his rocket
And only stopping by on his way to a better world

If Taylor finds a better world
    Then Taylor's gonna run away

    Taylor
  • This song is often rumored to tell the story about a prostitute. The prostitute statement is simply a misunderstanding. Jack Johnson wrote this song about a young girl named Taylor, hence the title of the song.

The song tells the story of three characters. The main character is Taylor, a sweet, young, innocent, lonely little girl, who is searching to find her heart. In the story, Taylor works the night shift, passing out tickets to patrons who want to see her dancing. All this time, Taylor is dreaming of a paradise where sadness is unknown. However, things turn sour when a secret about her life reveals a sudden change. Feeling as though she has been mistreated, Taylor leaves her parents' home, trying to find someone who will comfort her. However, she only finds herself wandering the streets, looking for a place she can call home. As she wanders along, Taylor meets the second character in the story, a young man named Peter Patrick, who is twice her age. Like Taylor, Peter Patrick is trying to find his heart. When Peter Patrick discovers that he's locked out of his own house, he pitter-patters on his window. As he waits with Taylor outside his house, Pete discovers that the third character of this story, his wife, Sunny, won't let him into his own house! Somehow, Sunny realizes that she knows the truth, she knows just where Pete's been going to. Sunny discovers the secret, that Pete has fallen for Taylor! However, Pete realizes all the while that he has made so many mistakes, but he wasn't going to let his love for Taylor be the biggest mistake he's made in his life. So, Pete tries to cover up the situation by thinking that going to church every Sunday will make everything right again.
  • The line, "Two thousand miles from here" refers to Hawaii, Jack Johnson's native home.
  • Johnson made a music video of this song with Ben Stiller, who plays the director.
  • Back when Taylor Swift was a teenage country star, she revealed to Rolling Stone that this song was her ringtone, saying that she ignores "the fact that the song is probably about a prostitute or a stripper."

    No Mercy Lyrics

    No Mercy
  • This was the second single released from Chimaira's Crown Of Phantoms album. It was made available on June 18, 2013. Asked by Loudwire how the song represent Crown of Phantoms, vocalist Mark Hunter replied: "The album celebrates how there really is no true individual, that we're all an expression of the people that have surrounded our lives and even the spirits of those that were before our time. So in continuing with that, 'No Mercy,' the song itself, dives into ego death. And that would be an expression of not having any true individual."
  • Directed by Patrick Finegan, who plays keys for Cleveland rock act Ohio Sky, the music video is a twisted ride through hell and back. Hunter explained to Loudwire: "The song goes through the journey of ego death and paranoia and [you] basically see me almost in like a buried alive sense. Having the flashback of what had happened and going through the layer of Hell and seeing me in the club and getting shot. It's really all just a paranoid hallucination. A lot of it came from reflection, an isolation tank, psychedelic exploration — it all kind of ties in with that."

    Sweet Baby James Lyrics

There is a young cowboy, he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and sleeps in the canyons
Waiting for summer, his pastures to change
And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the doggies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear
As if maybe someone could hear

    Goodnight you moonlight ladies
    Rockabye Sweet Baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
    And rockabye sweet baby James

Now the first of December was covered with snow
So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
The Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
But singing works just fine for me

    So goodnight you moonlight ladies
    Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colors I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
    And rockabye sweet baby James

    Sweet Baby James
  • James Taylor is not singing about himself in this song, but about the child who was named in his honor. Taylor wrote the song in 1969, when he drove on his way to Richmond, Virginia to see his older brother, the late Alex Taylor. James had recently returned to America after recording his first album in England, and he was shocked to learn that Alex had become a father for the first time in his absence.

Alex and his wife, Brent Taylor, had given birth to their first child, a baby son, which Brent wanted to name Richmond, after the city in which he was born. However, Alex wanted to name the child James, after his younger brother. So after a few arguments, the couple named the boy James Richmond Taylor. James was elated to discover that he had a new baby nephew, also named James. So the title can be a little confusing, since both the singer and his nephew are named James. The singer is James Vernon Taylor, while his nephew is James Richmond Taylor.
  • This song is a soft lullaby that tells the story of a young cowboy who spends his lonely nights in the canyons, with nothing to keep him company but his horse and his cattle - he occupies his long and lonely hours of darkness singing himself to sleep.

There are some ways this song associates with its writer. As a young child, James Taylor, along with his siblings, often sang each other to sleep at night. The story goes that James couldn't stand it when his mother sang, because she only sang opera. And because James' mother was a lyric soprano, she never sang lullabies. James' father never sang lullabies either, because he didn't exactly have the knack for music.

So when he was a little boy, the young James Taylor was often put in the position of having to sing himself to sleep each night, hence the line, "Singin' works just fine for me."
  • Some translations of the lyrics:

"Dogies" (Pronounced Doe-gies), is a Western Cowboy Slang term for "Cattle." "As the dogies retire" translates to: "As the cattle settle down for the night."

"Good night, you Moonlight Ladies" - This line is often misinterpreted, as many listeners are fooled into believing that the moonlight Ladies are prostitutes. The "Moonlight Ladies" are actually the spirits of the moon, which come out of the sky and shine their lights as the evening darkness falls.

"Rockabye, Sweet Baby James" - This line is loosely based on the nursery rhyme, "Rockabye Baby." James wanted to make this song sound smooth and calm for his baby nephew, so instead of singing the familiar lullaby "Rockabye Baby," he softly sang, "Rockabye, Sweet Baby James."
  • Speaking with Rolling Stone in 2015, Taylor said this was his best song. "It starts as a lullaby, then the second half of the song - 'the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston' - talks about what music means to me. It gets pretty spiritual by the end."
  • This was Taylor's first single released on Warner Bros. Records. He started with Apple Records, the label owned by The Beatles, but the dream became a nightmare when after releasing his debut album in 1968, Apple fell into disarray and Taylor was dropped.

With Warners, he got better promotion and gradually made a name for himself, becoming a top artist of the '70s. The "Sweet Baby James" single never charted but remains one of his most enduring songs. It was his next single, "Fire and Rain" that was his commercial breakthrough.
  • The Dixie Chicks did a cover of this song with Taylor at a benefit concert in September of 2005, to honor the many victims of Hurricane Katrina who lost their homes in New Orleans, Louisiana.
  • Like Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends" and Billy Joel's "Piano Man," this is written in waltz time (3/4).

    That's All Lyrics

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong, when I thought I was right
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, That's All
I could say day, you'd say night
Tell it's black when I know that it's white
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

    I could leave but I won't go
Though my heart might tell me so
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
So why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
    S'always the same, it's just a shame, that's all

Turning me on, turning me off
Making me feel like I want too much
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time
Running around, staying out all night
Taking it all instead of taking one bite
Living with you's just putting me through it all of the time

    I could leave but I won't go
    It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

    Truth is I love you
    More than I wanted to
There's no point in trying to pretend
    There's been no-one who
Makes me feel like you do
Say we'll be together til the end

    I could leave but I won't go
    It'd be easier I know
I can't feel a thing from my head down to my toes
But why does it always seem to be
Me looking at you, you looking at me
S'always the same, just a shame, that's all

Just as I thought it was going alright
I find out I'm wrong when I thought I was right

  • This song is about a failing relationship. The singer feels that no matter how hard he tries, the relationship keeps ending up in the rut: "It's always the same, it's just a shame, and that's all."
  • In the video, the 3 members of Genesis are apparently homeless, dressed in dirty clothes and warming themselves using fires in metal barrels. The connection between the video and the song (if there is one) is open to interpretation.

    Bonfire Heart Lyrics

Your mouth is a revolver firing bullets in the sky
Your love is like a soldier, loyal till you die
And I’ve been looking at the stars for a long, long time
I’ve been putting out fires all my life
Everybody wants a flame, but they don’t want to get burnt
    And today is our turn

    Days like these lead to
    Nights like this leads to
    Love like ours
You light the spark in my Bonfire Heart
    People like us we don’t
need that much just someone that starts
starts the spark in our bonfire hearts

This world is getting colder, strangers passing by
No one offers you a shoulder, no one looks you in the eye
But I’ve been looking at you for a long, long time
Just trying to break through, trying to make you mine
Everybody wants a flame, they don’t want to get burnt
    Well today is our turn

    Days like these lead to
    Nights like this leads to
    Love like ours
You light the spark in my bonfire heart
    People like us we don’t
Need that much just someone that starts
Starts the spark in our bonfire hearts
    Our bonfire hearts
    Our bonfire hearts
    Our bonfire hearts
    You like the spark

    People like us we don’t
Need that much just someone that starts
Starts the spark in our bonfire hearts

    Bonfire Heart
  • Having been through a number of relationships where the flame eventually burnt out, Blunt sings here of finally meeting a girl whom he believes will keep the fire in his heart alive. "The song is about love, life, fear and hope," said the singer when sending out a link to the song stream to fans that belong to his email list, "and more than anything, you… and me…"

The single was premiered on BBC Radio 2 on July 29, 2013.
  • Blunt explained the story behind the climax of the music clip. "We shot the video throughout Wyoming and Idaho over two days using real characters," he said, "and the final scene took place in the car park of a bar, where everyone we'd met on the journey would meet up and we planned to film a wrap party. What we didn't know was that in the bar, a wedding was taking place, and when they saw us arrive, the entire wedding piled out and joined us."

"I played them all 'You're Beautiful' in the car park on my guitar with the bride and groom pushed to the front by the 80-strong crowd," Blunt continued. "Then we lit fires and sparklers, put on 'Bonfire Heart,' and the bride and groom had their first dance to it, which we filmed, and which is now the climax of the video. In fact, it stopped being my promo video, and became their wedding video."
  • Blunt penned the song with OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, who doubles up as a successful songwriter/producer. His credits include Leona Lewis' transatlantic chart-topper "Bleeding Love" and Beyonce's hit single "Halo." The song was composed in Luxembourg and Amsterdam, recorded in the US and Sydney and mixed in Los Angeles. "So you could say the song has already gone global," said Blunt before the track's release.
  • Blunt told Billboard magazine that the song has a simple message that anyone can relate to: "That notion of connection," he explained. "So the lyrics are really simple: People like us, we don't need that much. Just someone to light the spark in our bonfire heart.'"
  • The Moon Landing album takes its name from the themes of love and loss Blunt explores throughout. "The moon landings were a moment of incredible human achievement that for some, we don't seem to be able to repeat," he said. "Like first love."
  • Blunt told MusicRadar.com about collaborating with Tedder on this tune. "Working with Ryan Tedder on Bonfire Heart allowed me to say, 'Let's make this upbeat, driving song that connects with lots of people,'" he said. "That was the meaning of the song when we wrote it. He has the hyperactivity within his musicianship that I wanted."
  • The song topped the charts in several countries, including Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

    How'd you get so desperate
    How'd you stay alive

    Help me please
Burn the sorrow from your eyes
Oh come on be alive again
    Don't lay down and die

    Hey hey
    You know what to do
Oh baby drive away to Malibu
    Get well soon

    Please don't go any higher
How are you so burnt when
    You're barely on fire
    Cry to the angels

    I'm gonna rescue you
I'm gonna set you free tonight, baby
    Pour over me
    Hey, hey

    We're all watching you
Oh, baby, fly away to Malibu
    Cry to the angels
    And let them swallow you

Go and part the sea, yeah, in Malibu
    And the sun goes down
    I watch you slip away
    And the sun goes down

    I walk into the waves
    And I knew
    Love would tear you apart
    Oh and I knew

The darkest secret of your heart
    I'm gonna follow you
Oh baby, fly away, yeah, to Malibu
    Oceans of angels

    Oceans of stars
Down by the sea is where you
    Drown your scars
    I can't be near you

It's an empathy song: Come to me, I'll save you. I wanted the boy in the song to drive away from Hollywood and the drugs. When I was pregnant, Kurt and I always had this thing about getting out of the basement apartment we lived in with dealers next door and going to live in Malibu. It's a very healing place."

Pull up to the club at about three (Uh huh)
I'm killin' it, guilty no plea (Uh huh)
I'm leaving out at 6 with a dime piece
By 9 o'clock, we on round three
I speak of rain they say I'm crazy like they didn't know
See I'm not crazy but my talent, man, got bipolar
Say she's a church girl but man she's blowing holy smokes
Showed her the Jesus piece now she got the Holy Ghost
They asked 'em in a interview, "Why do he love these girls?"
The only thing he had to say was, "Motherf*** the world!"

This is my story, yeah I'm from that Chi-town dirt
I went from being broke to sleeping in Versace shirts
This is my story, money, cars, bad hoes
    This is my story eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh-eh
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
And I'm, stickin', to it (Uh huh)
    And I'm, stickin', to it

    Bob Lyrics

    He spent 15 years
    Getting loaded for 15 years
    Till his liver exploded
    Now what's Bob gonna do
    Now that he can't drink?
The Doctor said: "What ya been thinking bout?"
Bob said, "that's the point. I won't think bout nothing.
Now I gotta do something else

    To pass the time
    Had someone shave his head
    He got a new identity
    62 hole air cushioned boots
And a girl who rides a scooter
To take him out of town
    They would get away
    Running around
And as the trucks drive by
You can hear the mother fuckers go "PUNK!"

A couple of lines, an extra thermos of Joe
He'll be kicking in heads at the punk rock show
Bob's the kinda guy who knows just what
Bob's the kinda guy who knows just what to do
When the doctor tells him to
Quit your drinking, now's the time
But will he ever walk the line?
To all my friends I feel just great
But will he ever walk the line?

    Kicking ass, and busting heads
    Red suspenders
Once a day he shaves his head
But will he ever walk the line? [Repeat: x2]

    City of the Dead Lyrics

This is the City of the Dead
As we lie side by side in bed
    I'd do something else instead
But it is the city of the dead

    We went out kickin' around
But you got drunk an' fallen down
An' I wished I could be like you
With the Soho River drinking me down

In the city of the dead
Fall in love an' fall in bed
    It wasn't anything you said
Except I know we both lie dead

Don't you know where to cop
That's what New York Johnny said
You should get to know your town
    Just like I know mine

While all the windows stare ahead
An' the streets are filled with dread
    Every nation in the world
Slinks through the alley after girls

What we wear is dangerous gear
It'll get you picked on anywhere
Though we get beat up we don't care
At least it livens up the air

    But someday's we hide inside
    All courage gone and paralyzed
Sniff that wind of ugly tension
Today the jerks have got aggression

It is the city of the dead

    City of the Dead
  • For a long time "City of the Dead" was one of the most popular Clash songs not to be released on any album - it only appeared as the B-side to 1977 single Complete Control. It was then included on the rarities compilation album Black Market Clash, and it's expanded re-release, Super Black Market Clash.
  • Singer Joe Strummer admitted in later interviews that around mid-to-late 1977, he was suffering from severe clinical depression and was incredibly disillusioned with the future of the Punk Rock movement. This explains why the lyrical themes of this song in particular, as well as another B-side from around this period, "The Prisoner," are very dark and cynical.
  • The title "City of the Dead" is drawn from an obscure 1960s British horror movie of the same name starring Christopher Lee. Guitarist Mick Jones would frequently introduce it live as being a song about "being dead from the neck up," a nod to common zombie horror film convention.
  • The latter verses relate to a common trend in 1977 of "Punk Bashing" where, partially as a result of hyperbolic tabloid reporting encouraging violence against Punk fans (including a shameful piece in the 6th June edition of the Sunday Mirror entitled "Punish The Punks"), there were many fights and attacks on Punk rockers:

"What we wear is dangerous gear
It'll get you picked on anywhere
Though we get beat up we don't care
At least it livens up the air."

High-profile victims of brutal attacks included Jamie Reid, Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten, and Clash guitarist Mick Jones, who tells the story of his attack in the 2002 documentary film Westway to the World.
  • The lines, "Don't you know where to cop, that's what New York Johnny said" were written in response to several unsavory incidents with drug abuse on the Anarchy tour in 1977, with the 'New York Johnny' being the American Rock frontman Johnny Thunders, formerly of the New York Dolls and at the time leader of Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. According to reports, he was regularly doing drugs on the tour and would try to intimidate others - including members of The Clash - to shoot up drugs with him.
  • The lyrics "Fall in love an' fall in bed, it wasn't anything you said, except I know we both lie dead" could have been inspired by Mick Jones' fractious relationship with his girlfriend at the time, Slits guitarist Viv Albertine. According to roadie Johnny Green, "she broke his heart... Mick used to cry and cry about Viv. He played the rock star normally with girls, but not with Viv, he really loved her." His breakup with Albertine would later form the basis for the lyrics to 1979 single "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)."
  • "City of the Dead" is the first Clash song to feature additional instrumentation beyond just the bass/guitars/drums/vocals quartet. In this case, the recording features saxophone and pianos, the latter played by Steve Nieve from Elvis Costello and the Attractions. The Clash were at the time greatly influenced by Bruce Springsteen, and this influence can be heard in the rich production and musical style.

    Slipping Through My Fingers Lyrics

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile
I watch her go with a surge of that well known sadness
And I have to sit down for a while
The feeling that I'm losing her forever
And without really entering her world
I'm glad whenever I can share her laughter
    That funny little girl

Slipping Through My Fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
    The feeling in it

Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
    She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
Barely awake I let precious time go by
Then when she's gone, there's that odd melancholy feeling
Ans a sense of guilt I can't deny
What happened to the wonderful adventures
The places I had planned for us to go
Well, some of that we did, but most we didn't
And why, I just don't know

Slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
    The feeling in it

Slipping through my fingers all the time
Do I really see what's in her mind
Each time I think I'm close to knowing
    She keeps on growing
Slipping through my fingers all the time

Sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
And save it from the funny tricks of time
    (Slipping through my fingers)
Slipping through my fingers all the time
Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning
Waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

    Slipping Through My Fingers
  • Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote the lyrics after watching his 7 year old daughter Linda go off to school, realizing she was beginning to "Slip through his fingers" and grow up. It's one of his favorites; Ulvaeus said of the song, "Every parent knows that feeling, even if you were with them every waking hour you'd still feel that you were missing something."
  • The lead vocal is performed by Linda's mother (and Bjorn's ex-wife) Angetha. They also had a son named Christian together before their divorce.
