When You Were My Girl Lyrics

When You Were My Girl
  • Matt Cardle wrote this song, which was the second single from his Porcelain album. The singer also co-produced the song with Toby Smith (Jamiroquai) and Jamie Scott (JLS, Enrique Iglesias). "I had a session in LA with JC Chasez [*NSYNC] and his producer Jimmy Harry," Cardle explained. "We came up with this really awesome bass line, which I revisited a few weeks later when I was back in the UK. I continued writing and a few days later, the track was finished." He added: "It's got a real Marvin Gaye, Jackson-esque type feel to it. I'm really proud of it."

The song was premiered on BBC Radio 2 on September 30, 2013 and released worldwide a fortnight later.
  • The song's music video was directed and shot by Nick Spanos in Los Angeles on September 16, 2013. The director previously worked with Cardle on the clips for his "It's Only Love" and "Lately" singles.

    I Don't Dance Lyrics

    I’ll never settle down,
    That’s what I always thought
Yeah, I was that kind of man,
    Just ask anyone

    I don’t dance, but here I am
Spinning you around and around in circles
It ain’t my style, but I don’t care
I’d do anything with you anywhere
Yes, you got me in the palm of your hand
    'Cause, I don’t dance

    Love’s never come my way,
    I’ve never been this far
'Cause you took these two left feet
And waltzed away with my heart

No, I don’t dance, but here I am
Spinning you around and around in circles
It ain’t my style, but I don’t care
I’d do anything with you anywhere
Yes, you got me in the palm of your hand, girl
    'Cause, I don’t dance
    No, I don’t dance

    I don’t dance, but here I am
Spinning you around and around in circles
It ain’t my style, but I don’t care
Well I’d do anything with you anywhere

    I don’t dance, but here I am
Spinning you around and around in circles
It ain’t my style, but I don’t care
I’d do anything with you anywhere
Yeah, you got me in the palm of your hand, girl
    'Cause, I don’t dance

    No, ooh

    I Don't Dance
  • The first single from Lee Brice's third album was originally penned by the singer-songwriter for the first dance with his wife at their April 2013 wedding. "I was trying to keep it a secret, but then I had to play it out one night," he told CBS Detroit's 99.5 WYCD. "And she got mad, because I was playing it out before we got married."

He added: "It's a tough guy being a tough guy going, 'Look, I don't dance, but I'll dance with you, I'll do whatever you want me to.'"
  • When Lee Brice sat down to work on an idea for a song he had called "I Don't Dance" with his pals Rob Hatch and Dallas Davidson he wasn't expecting it would wind up being the lead single for his third album. "In my mind it was a song for Sarah, before we got married," he told Radio.com . "It was kind of about our first dance."

But during that writing session, the tune took on a new life of its own. "Immediately when we finished writing it, I realized it wasn't just a song I was writing for my wife," Brice continued. "Maybe because it was coming from that place," (but whatever the cause), "it turned out so special."
  • The song's music video was directed by Ryan Smith. It switches between scenes of Brice playing in an empty Ryman Auditorium and snatches from his own wedding.
  • Lee Brice first met Sara Reeveley in the early 2000s in South Carolina. They married in the mountain resort town of Branson, Missouri on April 21, 2013.
  • This is the title track of Lee Brice's third album. He told Rolling Stone that calling the whole album 'I Don't Dance' is symbolic of his refusal to, "dance in the box of Nashville."
  • The song won Single Record of the Year at the 2015 ACM Awards.

    The Little Drummer Boy
  • Pentatonix are an a capella group comprising Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. The quintet released a video in late 2013, in which they covered The Harry Simeone Chorale's holiday classic to the background of Los Angeles as a gift for their three million followers. The clip began with 6.4 million US Streams in its first week, resulting in it debuting at #13 on the Hot 100, which was coincidentally the peak position of The Harry Simeone Chorale's famous rendition of the song.

The song achieved a high chart placing as a result of a change in Billboard's methodology in February 2013, when YouTube views and other streams became a factor in tabulating the Hot 100. Baauer's chart-topping single, "Harlem Shake" was the first song to benefit from the new policy.
  • Asked by Billboard magazine what the impetus was for recording the song, the quintet replied: "We'd been wanting to arrange the song for a while, but could never really figure out a direction. We decided to just try it out, and we were incredibly happy with the way it turned out!"

    Seven Nights Seven Days Lyrics

Oh my darlin' I'll go down and commute
    Until one hundred souls
There's a fire on the moon
I'll be over the line, I'll be under the spell
    I'll be the comeback king
On his way home from hell

    Seven nights, seven days
Seven wishes that will bury this place
Another reason not to get out of bed

    Show me the way brother,
    Give me a sign sister
I'm not the only one who's waiting to be born
    I see the day comin',
I see the time runnin' out
I see all of my dreams ragged and torn

Oh my darlin' all my sympathy's gone
    And my sunsets are strange
    My time's gettin' on
They'll rip me to shreds like it's never been seen
'Cause I never convinced them that I meant what I mean

    Seven nights, seven days
Seven wishes that will bury this place
Another reason not to get out of bed

    Show me the way brother,
    Give me a sign sister
I'm not the only one who's waiting to be born
    I see the day comin',
I see the time runnin' out
I see all of my dreams ragged and torn
I see all of my dreams ragged and torn
I see all of my dreams ragged and torn

    Seven nights, seven days
Seven wishes that will bury this place
Another reason not to get out of bed
Another reason not to, another reason not to,
Another reason not to, another reason not to,
Another reason not to get out of bed

    Show me the way brother,
    Give me a sign sister
I'm not the only one who's waiting to be born
    I see the day comin',
I see the time runnin' out

    Seven Nights Seven Days
  • This was the first single from The Fratellis third album, which came five years after their previous effort, Here We Stand. Tensions in the band caused their split in 2009, but in 2013 the Glasgow trio got back together for a few gigs, which led to the We Need Medicine album.
  • Lead singer Jon Fratelli describes this song as "sort of autobiographical." It's an upbeat track with downbeat lyrics of broken dreams and finding the strength to face the day.

In our 2013 interview , Jon stated: "The character in that song sounds like he's in a desperate place and needs some hope from somewhere. I guess we've all felt like that at times."
  • The video follows a bedraggled clown who torments his audience. He is beaten and scorned, but redeemed when he finds a female clown who becomes his partner. Jon Fratelli told us about the clip:

"It's really just trying to convey the idea of someone who finds themselves in the wrong time, trying desperately to perform for people who don't understand him. Clowns being 'old fashioned' as a form of entertainment seemed to tell that story well."

    Everything Is Embarrassing Lyrics

    (I know you're trying)
Everything and nothing always haunts me
    I know you're trying, I know you're trying
Waiting for your moment to fall on me
I saw you trying, I saw you trying

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

    (I know you're trying, I know you're trying)
Hurts so bad I don't know what you want from me
You know I'm trying, you know I'm trying
And now we're hanging on by a heartbeat
    You know I'm trying
    I was always trying

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

I've been hating everything, everything that could have been
    Could have been my anything
    Now everything's embarrassing

Acting like it's nothing, such a bore
I saw the truth and I just can't ignore
You're trying to hold the heart that can't be stored
Say, I tried to give my best before
You wouldn't have the chance to give me more
You're only one step closer to the door

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother
Telling me that basically you're not looking out for me
    Everything is true to me
Never words where you would see
Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

I've been hating everything, everything that could have been
    Could have been my anything
    Now everything's embarrassing

Maybe if you let me be your lover
Maybe if you tried then I would not bother

    Everything Is Embarrassing
  • This Dance-Pop track originated with a demo sent by British songwriter Dev Hynes (Solange's "Losing You," Mutya Keisha Siobhan's "Flatline") which was inspired by a failed relationship; Ferreira then modified the original lyrics and structure along with her producer Ariel Rechtshaid.
  • The song was released as a single in the UK on April 14, 2013 and included on the 2013 Now That's What I Call Music! 46 compilation album in the US.
  • Ferreria and Hynes had been friends but the pair fell out over comments she made as to whose song it was. Ferreira told The Guardian: "He wrote the demo, and I've always given him credit, all I said was that the song wouldn't have been made without me on it. I think it's a shame because Dev's really talented and he's my friend. Well, was my friend – it's kinda sad that we can't be [friends] now."
  • Ferreira sung this on her debut television performance, during the January 7, 2013 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
  • The track was critically acclaimed, with several publications and music blogs listing it among their favorites of 2012. New York magazine named it the best song of the year saying it, "has feathery grace and weary melodies, magic and sparkle, and feels as warm as curling up next to the radiator on a cold day."

    Kiss You There Lyrics

    Kiss You There
  • This was Ronnie Dunn's first release on his own independent label, Little Will-E Records. Dunn debuted the single for fans attending Nashville CMA Music Festival when he ambushed Rippy's Bar and Grill on Lower Broadway for an impromptu performance. The song was released on July 29, 2013 with HitShop Records executing radio promotion while Dunn's label retained personal brand control. After an unsuccessful run the singer and HitShop Records parted ways making it exclusively a Little Will-E Record deal.
  • The song was written by Don Schlitz (Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler") and Josh Kear (Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now"). It was produced by Dunn with Jeff Balding, who is primarily known for his work with country music acts such as Faith Hill, Trace Adkins, and LeAnn Rimes, but has also worked with pop stars such as Amy Grant and Celine Dion.
  • The song's music video finds Dunn travelling all over the world. Amongst the famous places he visits are the White House, the Statue of Liberty, the Grand Canyon, Buckingham Palace and Nashville. The clip was directed by the late Sherman Halsey, an award-winning videographer who passed away in October 2013. Halsey is credited with filming many of country music's most memorable visuals, including Tim McGraw's "It's Your Love," as well as several of Brooks & Dunn's promos, such as "Hard Working Man" and "Little Miss Honky Tonk."
  • Dunn admitted to Billboard magazine that when he first heard the demo, it threw him for a loop. "Four or five publishers came over and pitched a total of about sixty songs one day," he recalled. "They were only able to play ten in the pitching session, so they each left a CD. After they left, I went through them, and I found it."

"Once I found out Don Schlitz had written it, I was curious," Dunn continued. "It was totally different than anything I had heard of. It was processed with a different sound, and the guy was rapping the words. I assigned a melody to it, and looped the drum machine in, and that's what we got."

    Acapella Lyrics

Used to be your baby, used to be your lady
Thought you were the perfect lover
All the harmony went fallin' out of key, so
    Now you gotta find another
Now you're talkin' crazy, sayin' that you made me
    Like I was your Cinderella
You and me are through though, watch me hit it solo
    I'mma do it Acapella, yeah
    I'mma do it acapella, yeah

Once upon a time, I met the perfect guy
He had that Colgate smile, he had that suit & tie
Mama always said "get a rich boyfriend,
You don't gotta love 'em, girl, you can pretend"
You bet I totes believed her, yeah, every word she said
Thought he was gluten-free, but all that I got was bread
Mama always said "nice guys finish last,
Beat him at his own game, honey, take the cash"

Ooh, and what a lucky girl you will be
But no, he didn't do jack for me
I want a bean with the beanstalk
And if the magic ain't right, time to walk

Used to be your baby, used to be your lady
Thought you were the perfect lover
All the harmony went fallin' out of key, so
    Now you gotta find another
Now you're talkin' crazy sayin' that you made me
    Like I was your Cinderella
You and me are through though, watch me hit it solo
    I'mma do it acapella, yeah
    Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    I'mma do it acapella, yeah

Out on our first date, he took me gourmet
We hit that Olive Garden, my Little Italy
Daddy always said "let the gentleman pay,
Never ever go Dutch at the buffet"
I saw his bad intention, he didn't wanna talk
He put the saucy on it (Oops!) time to check my watch
Daddy always said "money can't buy class,
You don't wanna get stuck takin' out trash"

Ooh, and yeah I guess it wasn't meant to be
Because he didn't do jack for me
I want a bean with the beanstalk
And if the magic ain't right, time to walk

Used to be your baby, used to be your lady
Thought you were the perfect lover

Watch me do it in falsetta
    Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    Oh-oh-oh

    Acapella
  • The official first single by American Pop duo Karmin, from their debut Pulses album, was penned by group members Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan with Sam Hollander (Big Time Rush's "Big Night," One Direction's "Rock Me") and Boys Like Girls frontman, Martin Johnson. The track was premiered on June 10, 2013 on Z100's Elvis Duran Show and was released on iTunes June 25, 2013.
  • The song is an ode to independence after the narrator realizes that her rich lover is a total dud. The duo flipped the the meaning of a cappella from singing without instruments to "I can do it by myself"' or "I don't need a rich boyfriend."

"Actually, 90% of the track was done a cappella," Noonan told Billboard magazine. "We went back there and made all kinds of weird sounds and chopped it up and put it in the computer."
  • The video was directed by Matt Stawski and was inspired by '90s music videos that the duo grew up watching. It uses a monochromatic color palette as the Karmin perform choreographed moves, which is something they've never done before on camera: "I actually enjoyed it," Nick Noonan told MTV News regarding his footwork. "To be honest I was a little hesitant in the beginning, I was like, 'I'm sorry, what?' But it wasn't even like someone else was saying it, it was us saying, 'Hey, we want to do this,' but I was still like, 'hey, I'm going to go for it and we're going to do everything and see.' If it looks terrible we've got to be straight up with ourselves though. You don't put a square into a round hole; you know what I'm saying? Is that the right analogy?"
  • Acapella is really spelled "a capella", but that doesn't read well, since it looks like a reference to something called a capella. The term means "without instrumental accompaniment," and comes from an Italian phrase that literally translates to "in the manner of a choir." Kellis released a song of the same title in 2010, and also used the "acapella" spelling.

The metaphor is apt in this song if the guy is considered the musical accompaniment. Note that "a capella" doesn't mean "solo," however, as a group of singers could perform in that style. Of course, ever since Rihanna's "Umbrella," Pop singers have been seeking "-ella" words, as they sing well and have some intriguing rhymes that can lead a storyline (fella, Cinderella...).

I got em both the same damn red bottoms
And bought 'em both the same damn fragrance
    Both bitches drive Range Rovers
None of my bitches can stay over
Both of my bitches look good as fuck
Your bitch look like booga wolf

I see two of my bitches in the club
And I know they know about each other
I think these bitches tryna set me up

    Yeah, I’m paranoid, I’m trippin'
I’ve been smoking, I’ve been sippin'
I’m fuckin' around with two bitches
But I never made them hoes my miss's

    Women talk, women talk
She run her mouth so much she can’t hear her own thoughts
Told my old ho, she my new bitch
Told my new bitch, she my old ho
Well she used to be your ho
    Dead, hold up, flat-line
I fuck a bitch to sleep, nap time
I put my name on it and that’s mine
Pussy so wet she thought it got baptized
    Ask me where I’m at, that’s a set-up
You ain’t talkin' bout nothing, bitch shut up
If you got a side chick, nigga what up
Both my girls in the club bout to nut up
    Stalking on my network
Got her looking so hard that her neck hurt
And I ain’t tripping, I got room for 'em both

    Paranoid
  • Tyrone Griffin is a Los Angeles singer, rapper and producer who is better known by his stage name Ty Dolla $ign. His initial claim to fame was through the success of YG's hit, "Toot it and Boot it," which he sung on, wrote and produced. This is a track from Ty Dolla $ign's debut retail project, Beach House EP.
  • The beat was supplied by DJ Mustard. The Californian producer is best known for his work on such hits as Tyga's "Rack City," 2 Chainz's "I'm Different" and Kid Ink's "Show Me."
  • The song was originally recorded by Ty Dolla $ign with longtime rapper buddy Joe Moses, and included on DJ Mustard's Ketchup mixtape. It was then included again on Ty Dolla $ign's July 2013 mixtape, Beach House 2. When the song was officially released and pushed as the Beach House EP's lead single later in the year, Moses' verse was replaced by Ty Dolla $ign's Atlantic Records label-mate B.o.B.
  • The official remix features new guest appearances by Trey Songz, French Montana and DJ Mustard. It was also included on the Beach House EP.
  • Ty Dolla $ign performed the song for the first time on national television during the December 17, 2013 episode of DJ Skee's Skee Live. He was accompanied by Joe Moses rather than B.O.B.
  • Ty told Artist Direct a theme runs through the Beach House EP. "It's definitely a whole story, and it does match up too," he said. "It's crazy how that works because I'm doing different songs randomly every day. The fact that you can put them together and they sound like a story is incredible. It's just amazing how God works, bro. I'm not even really trying. It just happens."
  • Asked by Artist Direct why he titled his mixtapes Beach House, Ty replied: "First off, my first mixtape was called Hou$e on the Hill, and that's because I lived in this house on the hill in Baldwin Hills. My roommate and I were moving, and we were looking for places in Malibu and along the beach. I called it 'Beach House' because that's where I was about to move. I ended up staying in Hollywood because it was closer to everything I was doing right now and the beach fu--ing takes so long to get to. It wouldn't have worked out for right now. Beach House is the goal. That's why I called my tapes Beach House."
  • The song finds Ty singing about being at a club when two different girls he's seeing both show up. He is aware that they know about each other and he questions whether the reason they are both there at the same time is to set him up." "Maybe I'm just paranoid," Ty muses.

"That one really happened," Ty told Spin magazine. "Like, the night before, I was at this club called Supper Club, and I came with this one chick. A couple other chicks started coming up to my table, and I saw them with these other chicks. So I was just wondering if they're trying to like" - (pause) - "you know what I mean? That s--t just came out the next morning on the beat."

    Look Right Through Lyrics

    I'm quite sure
    That you never knew
All the pain that I've been through
    Even this morning
    Looked outside my door
For your letter on the floor
    Seven long years
    Of moving through the streets
    Letting people in
But they don't talk to me
    They Look Right Through
Just like you (Just like you now)
    They look right through
Just like you (Just like you, just like you yeah)

Sun comes up, I'm alone again
With the lights on in my head
Still loves us the wing, from my little room
'Cause I gotta go back soon

Other people's lives, all the long goodbyes
Watching in the mirror with longing in my eyes

They look right through oh oh
Just like you (Just like you now)
    They look right through oh
Just like you (Just like you, just like you)
They look right through (They're looking right through me)
Just like you (Just like you babe)
They look right through (I can't believe it)
Just like you (Just like you, just like you)

I can't believe it, no no no
How can you change your mind?
Look right through me all the time
I'm gonna give you every part of me
But you just wanted to be free, yeah

    They look right through
    They're looking right through me
    They look right through
    They're looking right through me
    They look right through
    They're looking right through me

    I'm wondering baby
Am I a piece of glass
    In your mind?

    They look right through
    They're looking right through me
    They look right through
    They're looking right through me
    They look right through
    They're looking right through me
    They look right through
    They're looking right through me

    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
    I'm wondering baby
Am I a piece of glass
    In your mind?

They look right through (Ho ho)
Just like you (Just like you now)
    They look right through (Oh)
Just like you (Just like you, just like you)
They look right through (They're looking right through me)
Just like you (Just like you babe)
They look right through (I can't believe it)
Just like you (Just like you, just like you)

    They look right through
    Just like you
    They look right through
Just like you (Oh, well, yeah)

    Look Right Through
  • Morgan Geist is an American DJ from Wayne, New Jersey who arrived at EDM music through an interest in the electronic sound effects he noticed in progressive rock songs. He formed the house and nu-disco duo Metro Area with Darshan Jesrani in 1998 and also releases solo material under the name of Storm Queen.
  • This song was first released on October 19, 2010, where it proved popular on Europe's party islands and turned into an online hit. In 2012, the Defected label issued a series of remixes, and on November 3, 2013 more remixes were released in the British Isles by the Ministry of Sound. Marc "MK" Kinchen's remix was hugely successful in the United Kingdom, where it entered at #1 on the singles chart.
  • Damon C. Scott (he uses his middle initial to avoid confusion with the ventriloquist Damon Scott, who won Britain's Got Talent in 2007) is the vocalist on this track. He was discovered my a producer named David Levy, who heard Scott singing on the 86th Street subway platform in New York City. Levy had him record some tracks, and later introduced Scott to Morgan Geist, who enlisted him to sing on this track and a few others.

In our interview with Scott , he explained, "I'd go over to his studio in Queens, New York, and he would pay me 50-60 bucks, and I would just sing down certain tracks."

When the remix went to #1 UK in 2013, Scott didn't know about it until he got a call from a booking agent in England, who brought him over to perform some shows. Once the song's popularity faded, Scott returned to America and once again started singing in the subway. He didn't get any royalties from the song because his vocals were a work for hire. He also didn't have any name or face recognition because he's not in the video and the track is credited to Storm Queen (he's not allowed to perform under that name). In England, he could sing this song and get lots of attention from onlookers who recognize the voice, but in America he finds himself is a tough spot as a busker with a #1 hit on another continent. Scott did also contribute vocals to DJ-producer Chris Malinchak's cuts "No Secrets" and "These Dreams."
  • "When I sang on 'Look Right Through' in 2010 it was just another song," Damon C. Scott told us. "It had no special significance to me and it had no special significance to him, either. I did it in two takes and I never thought it sounded the best it could have. I thought it was kind of horrible that he wanted to use that take. He said, 'Don't even worry about it. I'm just putting this stuff down. I probably won't even make back the money I'm giving you right now.' When he said that, I said, 'You know, you shouldn't think that way about the stuff I'm doing with you, because I'm on an upward trajectory. I'm someone going somewhere, so anything I do is going to be worth more than what you think in the long run.' He said, 'Okay, we'll see.'"
  • Kinchen admitted to Billboard magazine that when Simon Dunmore of the UK dance music label Defected approached him with an opportunity to remix the track, he wasn't convinced. "He said, 'Do you want to remix this? Jamie Jones just did a remix of it,'" Kinchen explained. "That's really why I picked the record to mix it, because Jamie did it. I don't like the original at all. The vocals are really good; the track is cool on an underground level but it wasn't my thing."
  • The 2012 release came with a video directed by Nils Clauss that follows both a prostitute and a man selling roses on the street. The following year, another video was made to accompany the hit remix. This one was made by Laurie Lynch of the Rokkit production company and shot at the Cadogan Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. This one finds a man in a tiger mask trying to impress the ladies with his dance moves.

All I really need to understand is
When you Talk Dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me
    Get jazzy on it

You know the words to my songs
    No habla ingles
    Our conversations ain't long
    But you know what is

I know what the girl them want,
    London to Taiwan
I got lipstick stamps on my passport
    I think I need a new one

Been around the world, don't speak the language
But your booty don't need explaining
All I really need to understand is
When you talk dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me
    Talk dirty to me

Uno, met your friend in Rio
Dos, she was all on me-o
Tres, we can menage a three though
    Quatro, ooh (2 Chainz!)

    Dos Cadenas, close to genius
Sold out arenas, you can suck my penis
    Gilbert Arenas, guns on deck
Chest to chest, tongue on neck
    International oral sex
Every picture I take, I pose a threat
Bought a jet, what do you expect?
Her pussy's so good I bought her a pet
Anyway, every day I'm trying to get to it
Got her saved in my phone under "Big Booty"

    Talk Dirty
  • The second single from Jason Derulo's Tattoos album finds the singer telling a girl who doesn't speak his language that all he really needs to understand is when she talks dirty to him. "It's just a shocking song," said Derulo. "People will be thinking 'Hmm, really?!' It's very out there, but it was so fun." The tune was premiered on BBC Radio 1xtra on July 22, 2013.
  • The song includes a contribution by American rapper 2 Chainz, becoming Derulo's first single to contain a feature. "Now feels like the time," he explained to Digital Spy . "I wanted to establish myself first and didn't want to lean on collaborations like some artists tend to do. I've always wanted my songs to stand up on my own, but the features have been really fun this time around."
  • The song debuted at #1 on the Australian Singles Chart, Derulo's second song to do so in the country after his 2010 release "In My Head." It also reached the top of the charts in several other countries including Germany and the United Kingdom.

"I learned throughout the year to trust my gut and what people around me say," DeRulo reflected to British newspaper Daily Star. "I had a feeling 'Talk Dirty' was the record. As I played it to people, they went nuts for it. You don't have to go into a lab and put this potion here and that potion there to find out what a good song is."

"'Talk Dirty' being my third #1 in the UK was pretty special," he added. "Beforehand there was such a big argument on what the next single should be after 'The Other Side.'"
  • The music video was directed by Colin Tilley on July 14, 2013. The director previously worked with Derulo on his clips for "It Girl," "Breathing," "Fight For You" and "The Other Side." Tilley said that they intended to embrace a variety of dance from different parts of the world: "We've got girls from different cultures that came and danced and brought out a different energy," he said, "and just created this beast that was really fun and exciting."
  • The song's production was provided by Ricky Reed, the mastermind behind the Hip-Hop and Pop music act, Wallpaper. The bass-heavy instrumentation samples the saxophone riff in a 2007 song titled "Hermetico" by the Israeli band Balkan Beat Box.

It was A&R man Miles Beard who picked up on the "Hermetico" saxophone riff. "Miles heard the song in January and played it for me on his phone in Los Angeles," Ricky Reed recalled to Billboard magazine. "As soon as the saxophone riff came in, I knew it was a hit waiting to happen."
  • After a video of One Direction dancing along to this song went viral, fans of the boy-band started making their own YouTube clips moving to the tune. Derulo latched onto the sensation, and enlisted other celebrities to appear in a "Celebrities Talkin' Dirty" visual. Released by the singer on March 14, 2014 to his official YouTube account, the short film included cameos by Bow Wow, Flo Rida, Ariana Grande, Enrique Iglesias, Larry King, Austin Mahone, One Direction, Jordin Sparks, Robin Thicke and Will.i.am.
  • An effective method for branding an artist is having his name mentioned by another voice in the song's intro. That's what Vanilla Ice did in "Ice Ice Baby" ("Yo Vanilla, kick it one time"), and that's what Derulo does here, with an exotic female voice saying "Jason... Jason Derulo" before we hear from him. This takes the guesswork out of knowing who sings the song. Another hit song to do this around the same time is "Dark Horse," which plugs its singers Katy Perry and Juicy J.
  • This also acted as the title track of Derulo's Talk Dirty album. The collection was sold solely in the United States, after Tattoos was only released as a 5-track EP in the country.
  • The song is very compact: it runs just 2:57, but gets in three verses, three choruses and a bridge (the "uno... dos..." part). The claps and horns are key elements in the song, making a great transition out of the verses.
  • DeRulo told Billboard the story of the song: "When I first heard the track, I loved it because it sounded exotic and Eastern," he recalled. "The chorus came to me immediately. I channeled my experience touring the world. You don't need to speak the language to communicate - body language is universal."

    Respect that, bow down bitches
I took some time to live my life
But don't think I'm just his little wife
Don't get it twisted, get it twisted
This my shit, bow down bitches
Bow down bitches, bow bow down bitches (Crown)
Bow down bitches, bow bow down bitches (Crown)
    H Town bitches
    H, H Town bitches
I'm so crown crown, bow down bitches

I'm about that H, town, coming coming down
I'm coming down, drippin' candy on the ground
H, Town, Town, I'm coming down, coming down
    Drippin' candy on the ground

We teach girls to shrink themselves
    To make themselves smaller
    We say to girls
    "You can have ambition
    But not too much
You should aim to be successful
    But not too successful
Otherwise you will threaten the man"
    Because I am female
I am expected to aspire to marriage
I am expected to make my life choices
    Always keeping in mind that
    Marriage is the most important
Now marriage can be a source of
Joy and love and mutual support
But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don't teach boys the same?
We raise girls to each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments
Which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
In the way that boys are
Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes

    You wake up, Flawless
    Post up, flawless
    Ride round in it, flawless
    Flossin on that, flawless
    This diamond, flawless
    My diamond, flawless
    This rock, flawless
    My rock, flawless
    I woke up like this
    I woke up like this
    We flawless, ladies tell 'em
    I woke up like this
    I woke up like this
    We flawless, ladies tell 'em
Say I, look so good tonight
    God damn, God damn
Say I, look so good tonight
    God damn, God damn

Momma taught me good home training
My Daddy taught me how to love my haters
My sister taught me I should speak my mind
My man made me feel so God damn fine

    You wake up, flawless
    Post up, flawless
    Ride round in it, flawless
    Flossin on that, flawless
    This diamond, flawless
    My diamond, flawless
    This rock, flawless
    My rock, flawless
    I woke up like this

    Flawless
  • Formerly known as "Bow Down," this was the first song to be heard from Beyoncé's eponymous fifth album. It was released on March 17, 2013 on the singer's Soundcloud along another tune titled "I Been On" and it found her commanding her female adversaries to praise all that she's done.

I know when you were little girls you dreamt of being in my world
Don't forget it, don't forget it
Respect that, and bow down bitches

Drawing controversy with the first music released in advance of a new album, is a tactic that Beyoncé has used before. She introduced her 4 album with "Run the World (Girls)," which caused critics to spill a lot of ink concerning its aggressive woman's empowerment message.
  • "Bow Down" later morphed into this less abrasive version, which still contains the the "bow down bitches" refrain but inserts a clarification of the singer's original intention as well as a spoken word passage against sexism provided by famed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The sample is taken from a message the Half of a Yellow Sun author delivered in a talk at the TEDxEuston called "We should all be feminists" in April 2013.
  • This was produced by Chauncey "Hit-Boy" Hollis, who is signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music label. The record producer was also behind Lil Wayne's "Drop The World" and Jay-Z and Kanye West's "Niggas In Paris" hit singles. He tweeted at the time of the song's release in its original incarnation:, "Haaaa I finally prod for Hovs wife. Beyoncè was the last person on my list to work with. I can't believe I prod for all my heroes by 25. ... I make that music my heroes get to talk they s--t on. Please never compare me to these other guys who could never make a '1 Train' by A$ap then 'Bow Down' for Beyoncé in the same year. Please."
  • The song begins and ends with a sample of Girls Tyme, the Houston girl band that would eventually turn into Destiny's Child. The two clips are taken from an episode of Star Search, which they competed in back in 1992. They lost to a band named Skeleton Groove.
  • Beyoncé recalled her Girls Tyme performance on Star Search in a featurette. "There's a moment where things click. When I was in the studio, I was threading the songs together and I thought of this performance, which was a really defining moment in my life as a child," she said. "In my mind we would perform on Star Search, we would win, we would get a record deal and that was my dream at the time."

"I feel like something about the aggression of 'Bow Down' and the attitude of 'Flawless,' the reality is, sometimes you lose," Beyoncé continued. "And you're never too good to lose, you're never too big to lose, you're never too smart to lose, it happens. And it happens when it needs to happen. And you have to embrace those things."
  • A remix of the song featuring rapper Nicki Minaj was released unexpectedly on Beyoncé's official website on August 2, 2014. The first collaboration between the two stars, Minaj marks the event drawling, "The queen of rap slayin' with Queen Bey. If you ain't on the team, you playin' for team D."

Beyoncé addresses the elevator altercation between her sister Solange and husband Jay-Z, when she sings "We escalate, up in this bitch like elevators, of course sometime s--t go down when there's a billion dollars on an elevator."

The trio hit headlines earlier in 2014 when surveillance footage emerged showing Solange lashing out at Jay Z as they left a Met Gala after party at a New York hotel. Solange has commented since the incident that the family are "at peace" with what happened.
  • Minaj told Hot 97 how the remix came to be: "A month or two ago, Gee [Roberson] called me when I was on my way to Vegas and said, 'Beyoncé wants you to remix to 'Flawless,'' she said. "After I got proper medical help and started breathing again, I was like, 'What?'"

"She sent me a version that she wanted," Minaj continued. "She told me, 'I want you to be you. I don't want you to hold back." I said, 'You sure?' She said, 'Yeah. I want you to be you and do you." I was actually in New York writing the verse. I recorded the verse in New York and she stopped by the studio. She was such a sweetheart. She was hyping me up, 'Do your thing. Don't hold back. Go in.' I was like, 'Okay. Alright.'"

"She said she was going to drop it in the middle of the [On the Run] tour," The Queens MC added. "I wrote the verse before she even went on tour. We've been going back and forth. I've been sending her photos of myself. We've been going back and forth about the mixes and the single art."
  • The song debuted on the Hot 100 at #82 following its inclusion in Beyoncé's medley performance during the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.
  • The remix with Nikki Minaj was named Best Song of 2014 by Time magazine. They said: "In a year that saw a number of high-profile female pop collaborations, 'Flawless' never topped the charts like 'Fancy,' but what it lacked in radio domination it made up for with sheer star power."
  • The remix contains a horn sample from Outkast's 1998 song "Spottieottiedopaliscious."

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the Children of the Sun
That's all you need to know

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

Bitch I'm a moon walker like Michael, sky walk all over my rivals
Both hands on that Bible, bitch I'm next in line for that title
When they got had nothing to do, what was I do, who was in the studio with Taio
We climbing high, we on the Kilimanjaro, and they're panicking
They don't really know what's happening
Never gotten clothes off a mannequin, we don't want no comparison
I overdose on extravagance, we went for gold and got platinum
I told my bro' to get an ambulance 'cause I caught a cold and went spazz on them
How can home be where the heart is,
When your shadow even fucking leaves you when you are in darkness
Still get stopped by Sergeant Pepper, looking for that ziggy stardust
After a lifetime of regret, I'm just looking for some answers

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

I had opportunity in my window, wise words in my kindle
Disturbing London, we here to ball, your team stuck in limbo
Like Freddie, Bruno and Ringo, I saw the signs and symbols
With that top down on my yellow ride, let bitches hate on my bimbo
I'm yards away from that milestone, international dial tone
Put me through amaro when you Instagram with your iPhone
From yellow bricks to them brown stones, I ring bells, I'm household
Look at all the rappers we outsold so keep your mouth closed, yeah
How did I become so jaded, maybe all these insecurities are making me feel naked
Feel like Harry did in Vegas, had my privacy invaded
That's a liberty a pity, the epitome of what fame is
Priest up in my parish, keep on putting me in their prayers
Swear I'd never sell my soul, my pride and dignity is too major, yeah
We rarely ever get those second chances, after a lifetime of regret
I'm just looking for some answers, yeah

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

Looking for a light that can outshine the sun
I know one day our time will come
Bought a camera to capture these cinematic nights
Still don't satisfy my appetite for this lavish life
Tell me, doctor, am I fit for all these flashing lights?
Like Michael said, it doesn't matter if you're black or white
We got the colors of the sun to descend above us
All we have is each other in case you happen to wonder, let's go

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone
    Anywhere you go, I follow
We are the children of the sun
That's all you need to know

    Lay down your head
    You're not alone

    Chasing mice
    And digging holes
    Tiny paws
    Up the hill
    Suddenly you're standing still

    Your fur is red
    So beautiful
    Like an angel in disguise
    But if you meet
    A friendly horse
    Will you communicate by
    Mo-o-o-o-orse?
    Mo-o-o-o-orse?
    Mo-o-o-o-orse?
How will you speak to that
    Ho-o-o-o-orse?
    Ho-o-o-o-orse?
    Ho-o-o-o-orse?

    What does the fox say?

    "Jacha-chacha-chacha-chow!
    Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!
    Chacha-chacha-chacha-chow!"
    What the fox say?

    "Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!
    Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!
    Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!"
    What the fox say?

    "A-hee-ahee ha-hee!
    A-hee-ahee ha-hee!
    A-hee-ahee ha-hee!"
    What the fox say?

    "A-oo-oo-oo-ooo!
    Woo-oo-oo-ooo!"
    What does the fox say?

    The secret of the fox
    Ancient mystery
    Somewhere deep in the woods
    I know you're hiding
    What is your sound?
    Will we ever know?
    Will always be a mystery
    What do you say?

    You're my guardian angel
    Hiding in the woods
    What is your sound?
    (Wa-wa-way-do, wub-wid-bid-dum-way-do, wa-wa-way-do)
    Will we ever know? (Bay-budabud-dum-bam)
I want to (Mama-dum-day-do) I want to, I want to know!
    (Abay-ba-da bum-bum bay-do)

    The Fox
  • Ylvis are a Norwegian comedy duo comprising the brothers Vegard and BÃ¥rd YlvisÃ¥ker. They recorded this EDM parody and its accompanying video to promote the season's première of their late-night TV talk show, I kveld med YLVIS (Tonight with Ylvis) on TV Norge. The visual quickly went viral after they uploaded it onto YouTube.
  • The song asks the question: What sound does a fox make? It was produced by Norwegian producers Stargate, the team behind Rihanna's "Diamonds" and Katy Perry's "Firework." BÃ¥rd described the writing process to Billboard magazine: "The way we work is we just sit around and talk about things and get ideas and take some notes," he said. "I guess we must have been talking about what sound a fox makes. And then we had a chance to work with Stargate, a production company in New York City...We actually did a favour for them and we asked them if they could produce a song for the new season in exchange."
  • This was the highest-charting song in the US by Norwegians on the Billboard Hot 100 since a-ha went to #1 with "Take On Me" in 1985.
  • Tor Erik Hermansen and his Stargate partner Mikkel Storleer Eriksen didn't compose the song's instrumentation specifically for Ylvis. Hermansen recalled to Spin: "We'd already been working on some beats and sent them a couple of options. They picked one or two that they liked. They came into the studio with the lyrics, and the fox sounds. We said, 'Are you sure this is what you want to do with it?' They said, 'Yep.' And we said okay and did it."
  • Stargate gave the backing track to Ylvis as a present after the Norwegian comedy team made a mockumentary video for them for Mikkel Storleer Eriksen's 40th birthday.
  • The clip was named as YouTube's Top Tending video of 2013. Runner-up was a military version of "Harlem Shake" whilst in third place was the slapstick visual, How Animals Eat Their Food, in which two men re-enact the eating habits of lizards and kangaroos.
  • A children's book based on the song titled What Does the Fox Say? was released in December 2013. The Simon & Schuster-published tome, which includes illustrations from Norwegian artist Svein Nyuhus, debuted at #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers List for Children's Books.

    Baby I Lyrics

Baby I got love for thee
So deep inside of me I don't know where to start
I love you more than anything
But the words cant even touch what's in my heart

When I try to explain it I be sounding insane
The words don't ever come out right
I get all tongue tied (and twisted)
    I can't explain what I'm feeling

    And I say baby, baby
    Baby (baby I)
Oh baby, oh baby, my baby (Baby I)
Oh baby, baby I (baby I)
All I'm tryna say is you're my everything baby
But every time I try to say it words they only complicate it

    Baby, baby (Ooh oh)

Baby I'm so down for you
No matter what you do (real talk) I'll be around
Oh baby, see baby I been feelin' you
Before I even knew what feelings were about
    Oh baby

When I try to explain it I be sounding all crazy
The words don't ever come out right
I get all tongue tied (and twisted)
    I can't explain what I'm feeling

    And I say baby, baby
    Baby (baby I)
Oh baby, oh baby, my baby (baby I)
Oh baby, baby I (baby I)
All I'm tryna say is you're my everything baby
But every time I try to say it words they only complicate it

    Baby, baby
    Baby, baby

    Straight up, you got me
All in, how could I not be
I sure hope you know (I sure hope you know)
If it's even possible, I love you more
Than word love can say it
It's better not explaining that's why I keep saying baby I

Ooh baby, oh baby, my baby (Baby I)
Oh baby, baby I (baby I)
All I'm tryna say is you're my everything baby
But every time I try to say it words they only complicated

    Baby, baby (baby)
    Baby, baby (baby I)
Ooh baby oh baby oh baby (Baby I)

But every time I try to say it words they only complicated
Every time I try to say it words they only complicated

    Baby I
  • Ariana Grande's second single from her debut album, Yours Truly, finds her expressing her special love for someone but admitting that she can't formulate her strong feelings into words. "Baby I got love for thee, so deep inside of me I don't know where to start," she croons. The song was released on July 22, 2013.
  • The song was written and produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds (who is best known for his contribution to the creation of New Jack Swing in the late 1980s), Antonio Dixon, and Patrick "J. Que" Smith. The trio also penned together Beyoncé's hit single, "Best Thing I Never Had."
  • Several reviewers compared Ariana's vocal performance on the song with another singer who has a large vocal range and a whistle register: Mariah Carey. The Sam & Cat star told MTV News that her debut album was inspired, in part, by the superstar songstress. "You know I love just like old R&B. I love the '90s, that whole vibe. I love Mariah Carey, of course, she's the goddess of all vocals," she said.
  • The song has a strong nostalgia vibe to it. Ariana told MTV News: "I love that. It felt like '90s, Aaliyah, Destiny's Child. I like that it has that throwback feeling to it. And that's when I grew up and it was such a feel-good song to me."

"And I love what it says," she continued. "I love it's about loving somebody so much that you just don't know what to say. I think that's really cute. I laughed the first time I heard the lyrics. I like that I get to sing a little more on it... It's quirky."
  • Ariana told MTV News that she can relate to the song's lyrical content about getting tongue-tied when you're with somebody you like. "Personally when it comes to me expressing myself with other people, especially if it's towards the beginning of a crush or the beginning of a relationship, I'm so awkward and so flustered in that way," she said. "I'm always so nervous to express myself that I feel like it's a very me song in that way."
  • The song's 1990s throwback video was filmed July 28-29, 2013. "When I said 'I want it to look like this,' I said like a TLC, Fresh Prince type vibe," Grande told Billboard magazine. "I was like, 'Let's just get really silly, 90's amazing outfits, and just go out and dance around and have fun."

    Stripes Lyrics

    [VERSE 1:]
You were lyin' there with nothing on
But a goofy little grin and a platinum blonde
I can't believe you'd do that on our bed
    I got a pistol and I got a bullet
And a pissed off finger just'a itchin' to pull it
The only thing keepin' me from losin' my head

    [CHORUS:]
Is I hate Stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

    Woah, woah, woah

    [VERSE 2:]
I could fall in love with the prison guard
I could sell cigarettes in the prison yard
Don't think hard time would be that hard on me
I could pick up trash on the side of the road
But I'd die if I saw someone I know
Ain't the chains, it's the clothes that's stoppin' me

    [CHORUS:]
I hate stripes and orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes

    [BRIDGE:]
Oh, and one shot ain't worth a bad mugshot
God knows I wouldn't be caught holdin' up a number
While the whole town's starin' at the picture
In the paper of me wearin' stripes

    [FINAL CHORUS:]
There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion
The only thing savin' your life
Is that I don't look good in orange and I hate stripes
    And orange ain't my color
And if I squeeze that trigger tonight
I'll be wearin' one or the other

    Stripes
  • Already a successful songwriter with credits for #1 hits by The Band Perry ("Better Dig Two") and Miranda Lambert ("Mama's Broken Heart"), Brandy Clark released her first solo album, 12 Stories on October 22, 2013. This is her first single from the collection.
  • This tells a dark but humorous tale of a woman who decides not to murder her cheating lover as prison uniforms aren't flattering. Clark told Billboard magazine: "That song seems to push a lot of buttons with a lot of people, women in particular. It's kind of a fantasy – that thought of 'I just caught you cheating on me. I'd shoot you right now, but I'm too vain. I don't look good in orange, and I hate stripes. I can deal with prison, but I can't deal with that part of it.' It's probably the most fun song on the record."
  • The song features the rather cool lyric: "There's no crime of passion worth a crime of fashion." Clark smiled to Billboard: "I wish I could say that was my line when we were writing it. I wrote that with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally. Shane and I both remember when Matt said that, and how obvious that is, but none of us had thought it. He just says it, and we were like 'Yeah, that's it.'"
  • The song's music video was directed by Becky Fluke (Little Big Town, Pistol Annies). HLN legal commentator Nancy Grace plays a cameo role.
  • Clark penned this with Matt Jenkins and Shane McAnally during a writing retreat. "It was too loud, so we decided to go down the road and find a park or whatever to write at," she recalled to Spin magazine. "But instead, we stopped at this house where no one was. The fence was locked, so we jumped over it. We're sitting out on these people's deck, completely trespassing, writing a song, and Matt and I were both very nervous that they were gonna come home: Every time a car would drive by, he would jump up and look around the corner. It became a little bit distracting, and at some point, he [jumped up again], and I said, 'Oh, c'mon Matt, the worst that could happen is we'll be wearing orange jumpsuits.' And Shane said, 'I've always wanted to write a song called 'Orange,' about a woman who wants to shoot her husband, but she doesn't like the color orange. But nothing rhymes with it.' And I said, 'Yeah, but everything rhymes with stripes.' And we were just off."
  • 12 Stories was named the best album of 2013 in any genre by New York Magazine's Jody Rosen, New York Post's Michaelangelo Matos, NPR's Ann Powers, Slate, and Boston Globe's Sarah Rodman.

See whites, blacks blazing a pound, ju-jumping around

  • The beat for this Oxymoron cut was supplied by Nez & Rio. The American production duo previously contributed production for a couple of tracks on Schoolboy Q's 2012 album Habits & Contradictions.
  • Nez & Rio's beat is based around American electronic band Chromatics' tune "Cherry" from the 2013 compilation album After Dark 2. The production pair didn't layer much else onto the instrumentation, just adding some banging drums.
  • The song's hook was first heard when it appeared as a teaser at the end of Kendrick Lamar's music video for "Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe." The full clean version was then featured on the soundtrack to the 2013 video game NBA Live 14.
  • Schoolboy Q made his network television debut performing this song on the January 24, 2014 episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
