Eye of the Tiger Lyrics

Risin' up,back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You trade your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the Eye of the Tiger, it's the thrill of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he' watchin'us all with the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin'tough, stayin'hungry
They stack the odds 'till we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the dream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

Risin' up, straight to the top
Had the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the dream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all with the eye of the tiger

The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger
The eye of the tiger

Eye of the Tiger
  • This was the theme song to Rocky III, which was the biggest movie of 1982. Tony Scotti was the president of Survivor's record label, and he played Sylvester Stallone some tracks from the previous Survivor album, Premonition. Stallone thought the sound, writing style and street appeal could fit in his new movie, so he called called Jim Peterik and Frankie Sullivan, who were Survivor's primary songwriters, and left messages on their answering machines. When we spoke with Peterik, he said, "Answering machines were still something of a novelty back then and to see that blinking light was a thrill. When I pressed the playback button I heard, "Hey, yo, Jim, that's a nice message you got there. This is Sylvester Stallone.' It was too thick to be really him, but it was him. That's really the way he talks."
  • The first two Rocky movies used a very popular orchestral theme written by Bill Conti. That song, "Gonna Fly Now," was a #1 hit in 1977. Says Peterik: "We didn't want to do anything like that. Stallone, in his first conversation to us, he made it real clear he wanted to distance himself from that first song. To him, it was great, but he wanted something to get to the youth market, the cutting edge. Looking back at age 53, it's hilarious to think I was once part of the cutting edge. We attempted to steer clear of the 'Gonna Fly Now' thing."
  • Jim Peterik told us regarding the origin of this song: "When we got the initial rough cut of the movie, the scene that 'Eye Of The Tiger' appears in was cut to 'Another One Bites The Dust' by Queen. Frankie and I are watching this, the punches are being thrown, and we're going, 'Holy crap, this is working like a charm.' We called Stallone and said, 'Why aren't you using that?' He goes, 'Well, we can't get the publishing rights to it.' Frankie and I looked at each other and went, 'Man, this is going to be tough to beat.' We had the spirit of, 'We've got to try to top this.' I started doing that now-famous dead string guitar riff and started slashing those chords to the punches we saw on the screen, and the whole song took shape in the next three days."
  • In the movie, Rocky Balboa is shown resting on his laurels, living the good life, doing American Express commercials and photo-ops and slacking off his training regimen. In stark contrast were scenes of the ominous Mr. T, training hard, sweating, bleeding and pouring out every last ounce of effort to become the boxing champion of the world. After the death of Rocky's trainer, played by Burgess Meredith, Rocky's friend (and former rival) Apollo Creed, played by Carl Weathers, implores Rocky to get back "The Eye Of The Tiger," meaning his edge and his hunger to be the champ.
  • Jim Peterik explained in our interview how Survivor wrote the song: "Frankie (Sullivan) came in with the lines, 'Back on the street, doin' time, taking chances.' I loved those lines immediately and suggested, 'Rising up, back on the street, did my time, took my chances' to make it fit with the story line and to make the rhythm of the words fit the music I was hearing in my head. That was certainly the lyrical spark that got the song started. The next two hours flew by in a flash as we jammed, cassette recorder running nonstop to catch anything good we did for future reference, and at the end of the day, the music was about 80% complete and the lyric about 30%. Over the next few days, I worked hard on the lyrics, remembering pieces of movie dialogue like, 'Went the distance,' referring to the central phrase of the first Rocky movie."
  • According to Billboard, this was the #1 song of 1982.
  • The iconic title of this song was not a sure thing. Jim Peterik told us: "At first, we wondered if calling it 'Eye Of The Tiger' was too obvious. The initial draft of the song, we started with 'It's the eye of the tiger, it's the thrill of the fight, rising up to the spirit of our rival, and the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night, and it all comes down to survival.' We were going to call the song 'Survival.' In the rhyme scheme, you can tell we had set up 'rival' to rhyme with 'survival.' At the end of the day, we said, 'Are we nuts?' That hook is so strong, and 'rival' doesn't have to be a perfect rhyme with the word 'tiger.' We made the right choice and went with 'Eye Of The Tiger.'"
  • Peterik came up with the intro while driving his car one day. He was looking for a dramatic way to start the song, emphasizing the slashing punches being thrown in the fight sequences. It was reminiscent of an intro he and Sullivan had put together a few years earlier for the song "Youngblood" on Survivor's first album.
  • Sylvester Stallone loved this song. When he heard the demo, he told the group it was exactly what he was looking for, but requested a mix with louder drums and asked if they could write a new third verse instead of repeating the first as they had done. The group did what Stallone suggested - they went about modifying the first verse and remixed the song.

Suggestions from an actor are usually not what bands are looking for when creating a song, but Stallone knew what he was doing. Jim Peterik said, "Stallone has a good ear for a hook. Just listen to his dialogues - he wrote those scripts. He came up with 'Eye Of The Tiger' for that script and those hook phrases like 'I'm going to knock you into tomorrow.' All that stuff is Stallone, he's a genius with dialogue. Songs are nothing more than dialogue set to music as far as I'm concerned."
  • This was also used in Rocky IV, where Rocky takes on the Russian boxer Ivan Drago. Once again, Stallone asked Survivor to write the theme song. They came up with "Burning Heart."
  • This song has become very popular among people in physical therapy, marathon runners, weightlifters, and just about anyone facing a challenge. Says Peterik: "People training for boxing matches, that's a natural, but in every sport, that song has crept into the motivational aspect of it. I never would have predicted it. It seems obvious now, but we just wrote a song for a movie. The fact that it was huge wasn't a big surprise at the time, but what surprises me is that it's still around. It's still credible, it's still not a joke, even though the Starbucks commercial kind of makes it a joke. I just know there's something in the water with that song. I remember the song came out and we were on the road with REO Speedwagon. The song was getting huge ovations and I thought, 'Oh, cool,' but it wasn't until I went to a Pizza Hut restaurant in some god-forsaken town in America. I was sitting there all alone, eating pizza when the song comes on the jukebox. This little 5-year-old girl jumps up from her seat, hits the dance floor and starts screaming, 'They're playing my song!, they're playing my song!,' and start's dancing to the song. I go, 'Now I know we have something.'"
  • The song has been used in numerous movies and TV shows. Early on the song was used sincerely to convey a similar sentiment to the movie - often in various wrestling events. As the years went by and the song became a pop culture touchstone, it was generally used more for parody to show a character comically striving. Family Guy, My Name Is Earl and The King of Queens all used the song in this manner, and in 2009 it was taken to a new level of absurdity in The Big Bang Theory, where it was used in a montage where scientists tried to solve a complex equation - every beat would cut to another shot of them staring at a chalkboard.

Other TV uses of the song include Supernatural (the main character sings it in a car), Modern Family, New Girl and Breaking Bad.

In 1986, this was featured in a Gary Busey movie that was called Eye Of The Tiger.
  • MTV was around for about a year when this was released. Over the next few years, it became standard practice for any popular song from a movie to use footage from the film in the video. These videos were great promotion for the movies, and often didn't show the performers at all (footage from Footloose, Flashdance and Top Gun showed up on MTV in videos like "Maniac" and "Danger Zone.")

Peterik told us how this video came together:
"Initially, it was going to be footage of the band performing contrasted with footage of the movie. One member of the group objected to that because he wanted to feel that the group was a group on its own and not just tied to the movie, which was pretty valid motivation. I didn't agree with it. I thought, 'Hey, let's capitalize on this movie.' The same person came up with a storyboard mimicking Stallone's rise to fortune to a young band from Chicago's rise to fortune and notoriety. That became the video of a band woodshedding in a funky warehouse, then walking down the street in a funky part of town with determination on their face and eventually hitting the big stage and performing the song. That's what came out. It was a popular video, but it was in the very early days of video. I look at it now and just cringe because it was so stiff and primitive."

The video was directed by Bill Dear, who would later direct the films Harry and the Hendersons (1987) and Angels in the Outfield (1994).
  • This won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group, and was also nominated for Song Of The Year (it lost to "Always On My Mind" by Willie Nelson). Frankie Sullivan and Jim Peterik were the only group members invited to the ceremony (because they were the song's producers), so they didn't attend. At the ceremony, The Temptations performed the song, spitting the vocals among their five members and doing boxing-inspired choreography to the song.

It was also nominated for an Oscar in the Best Original Song category, where it lost to "Up Where We Belong." Sullivan and Peterik did attend that ceremony.
  • Jim Peterik left the band in 1996 and forfeited the Survivor name to Frankie Sullivan. When the CBS TV show Survivor became a huge hit, they released a soundtrack to the show using the name Survivor. Sullivan sued, claiming CBS was creating confusion by using the Survivor name on an album.
  • In 2004, this was used in a Starbucks commercial where Survivor follows around a young businessman named Glen and motivates him with a modified version of this song.
  • When he asked him why he thought this song was so successful, Jim Peterik told us: "I guess if you want to analyze it, it would be an

  • This was included on Fagen's first solo album after Steely Dan called it quits in 1981. The song is about growing up in the suburbs in the late '50s and early '60s. Some of the cultural references include "pushing the button," "Tuesday Weld" and "Dave Brubeck." The title comes from President Kennedy's political agenda for the country during his brief administration. (thanks, Chris - Bristolville, OH)
  • The song is a satirical take on life in the early 1960s, particularly the fear of a nuclear war, which had been revived in the early 1980s. (thanks, Mike - Santa Barbara, CA)
  • On The Charlie Gillett Show on London's Capital Radio in 1988, Fagen said: "You'll hear a little blues guitar played by Larry Carlton, and it's kind of a track reflecting the spirit of the times. The storyline is basically about a bunch of kids who have a party in a fall-out shelter while their parents are away for the weekend." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

    The Celtic Soul Brothers Lyrics

    More please and thank you
Introducing The Celtic Soul Brothers and featuring the strong devoted,
Ladies and gentlemen, would you now please take your leave.
Because we've sat back looking and nearly been took,
Even been scared but now I don't care and I'm telling anyone who'll listen.
I've seen what's on show and now there's no more to know
    'cause I've been there,
    I've been seen there,
    I've seemed it, dreamed it,
    Beened it, schemed it.
Excuse me please, you're standing in my space,
So step aside, now your time's up.
Come on my friends, I would now like to propose a toast
To the strength I see that's surrounding me and those who've cared,
Oh yes, I've been scared and I'm telling anyone who'll listen
I've seen what's on show and now there's no more to know,
    Oh I've been there,
    I've seen there,
    I've seemed it, dreamed it,
    Schemed it.
You see I know this to be true,
Now would I lie to you?
And I'm not waiting for approval from you
    We're coming through.
    More please and thank you.

    The Celtic Soul Brothers
  • This song was written by Dexys lead singer Kevin Rowland along with their trombone player Jim Paterson and keyboard man Micky Billingham. The song is about the band, who had Celtic roots (Ireland and Scotland), and a love for Soul music, which they made clear in songs like "Jackie Wilson Said" and "Geno" (about the American singer Geno Washington).
  • The music phrase that dominates this song was inspired by the song "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," which was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. That song became a hit for the British singer Sandie Shaw, but it was originally recorded by an American Soul singer named Lou Johnson, putting it squarely in Dexys' range of influences.

In our interview with Kevin Rowland , he said: "We wanted a good rhythm, so we got that. That's a great song. We often do that. We put a song on and we say, 'We want to write something as good as this.' We might use one phrase, but it's not really nicked because the chords are different, so the harmony's different. The harmony of the melody over the chord."
  • Too-Rye-Ay was the band's second album, but their first one released in America. In the UK, Dexys had seven Top 40 hits by the time this charted, but in the US, it was just their second single, following their massive hit "Come On Eileen," which rose up the ranks thanks to a video that made hot rotation on MTV.

"The Celtic Soul Brothers" had a video, but it lacked the storyline of "Eileen" and was ignored by MTV. It got little radio support and topped out at #86 on the Hot 100, leaving the band on one-hit-wonder turf in America.
  • In the UK, this was released ahead of "Come On Eileen," but made it to just #45 on the charts. This prompted a change in marketing strategy for the band, who had declined all interviews when Too-Rye-Ay was released, choosing instead to promote the album with full-page ads explaining their reticence to do press and making their case for the album.

When it came time to release "Eileen," the band once again accommodated journalists, resulting in some very contentious interviews with lead singer Kevin Rowland, who turned standoffish and insulting when questioned about his stage antics or raggedy attire. The interviews served their purpose, and "Eileen" became the biggest-selling single of 1982 in the UK. In its wake, "The Celtic Soul Brothers" was re-released, this time making #20.

Listen now to the wind babe
    Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't want to see this town no more

Wastin' my days on a factory floor
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again

Anytime you want babe, you can come around
But only six days separates me and the great top end
I been working hard, tweleve hours a day
And the money I saved won't buy my youth again

Goin' for the heat babe, and a tropical rain
In a place where no man's puttin' on the dog for me
Waitin' on the weekend, set o' brand new tyres
And back in Bow River's just where I want to be

Listen now to the wind babe
    Listen now to the rain
Feel that water lickin' at my feet again
I don't want to see this town no more

Too many years made up my mind to go or stay
    Right to my dying day
I don't want to see another engine line
Too many years and I owe my mind

First set o' wheels headin' back Bow River again
First thing you know I'll be back in Bow River again

Got the motor runnin', got the rest of my days
Sold everything I owned for a song
So anytime you want babe, you can come around
But don't leave it too late you just might find me gone

Listen now to the wind babe . . .

    I don't need the score
    I'm goin' through the door
Gonna tell the man I don't want no more
Pick up a fast car and burn my name in the road

One week two week maybe even more
Piss all my money up against the damn wall

  • Like most of Cold Chisel's songs, this is about the working class ("I've been working hard, twelve hours a day..."). It describes the needs and wants of the working class man - the song has a very Aussie feel to it. (thanks, hayley - vic, Australia)
  • The members of Cold Chisel were: Jimmy Barnes (lead vocals), Ian Moss (vocals and lead guitar), Steve Prestwich (drums), Phil Small (bass) and Don Walker (keyboards). All members have gone on to have strong solo careers, with Barnes doing the strongest. He has a long list of albums, and toured globally supporting artists such as Bon Jovi. Barnes is the brother of John Swan (Swanee) who recorded as a solo artist, then went on to do the lead vocals for the "Party Boys." (thanks, Bart - Cairns, Australia)
  • This appears on Cold Chisel's live albums Last Stand (1983) and Ringside (2003). The song was also recorded in 1991 by Ian Moss on his second solo album Worlds Away. His 2006 release Six Strings features a 7-minute solo acoustic rendition of the song. Jimmy Barnes included a version on his 2001 live release Raw with a guest appearance from Ian Moss as well. Towards the end of Barnes' live rendition where the song goes into, "I don't need the score, I'm going out the door..." he stumbles for a second and forgets the words. Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
    Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm sorry I was blind

But you were Always On My Mind
You were always on my mind

    Maybe I didn't hold you
    All those lonely, lonely times
I guess I never told you
That I am so happy that you're mine
If I made you feel second best
Girl I'm sorry I was blind

But you were always on my mind
You were always on my mind

Tell me, tell me that your sweet love hasn't died
Give me, give me one more chance
    To keep you satisfied
    I'll keep you satisfied

Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

    Always On My Mind
  • This was written by the songwriting trio of Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson. It was originally recorded by Brenda Lee in 1971.
  • This song tells the story of a man who admits that he didn't always do the things he should have to show appreciation for his lady, but wants her to know he was always thinking about her.
  • The Country Music Association named this Single Of The Year in 1982. It also did very well at the Grammys, taking the awards for Song Of The Year, Best Male Country Vocal Performance, and Best Country Song. It was the first country song to take Song Of The Year, and it wasn't until the 2007 ceremonies when another country act got one: The Dixie Chicks for "Not Ready To Make Nice."
  • Elvis Presley recorded this in 1972. His version reached #9 in the UK. A cover version by The Pet Shop Boys made UK #1 in December 1987. They had released it after performing it on a BBC Elvis tribute show. (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England)
  • Levi's used this in a 2004 commercial where a guy goes to great lengths to retrieve his jeans. He brings his old girlfriend a flower as a peace offering, then grabs his jeans and leaves while she puts it in water.
  • In the January 2006 issue of Esquire magazine, B.B. King said that this was his favorite song.
  • In 1987, The Pet Shop Boys released a dance version on their album Introspective which was the Christmas #1 in the UK and reached #4 in the US. Neil Tennant explained to 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh, "We were approached by Central TV to be on a program called Love Me Tender, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley, and for some reason, we agreed to do it. Rob Holden, who worked with our manager, Tony Watkins, got us a load of Elvis cassettes and the first track on the first one Chris picked up, Magic Moments With Elvis, was 'Always On My Mind.' We were originally going to do a house version of 'Baby Let's Play House' but there wasn't time. We wouldn't have done 'Always On My Mind' unless it was very different from the original, so we added an extra chord to it. There's a B flat at the end of each chorus that wasn't in the original. It makes it far more like a pop song."
  • As part of a series of re-releases of Elvis songs in the UK in 2007 his version re-entered the UK chart at #17.
  • The Pet Shop Boys rendition of this song was voted the top cover version of all time in a 2014 BBC Music vote. Johnny Cash's interpretation of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt" came in second place, followed by The Stranglers' cover of Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By."
  • Wayne Carson wrote this song in ten minutes at his kitchen table in Missouri. He competed it in the studio with the help of Johnny Christopher and Mark James.

    The Metro
    Berlin

    I'm alone
    Sitting with my empty glass
    My four walls
    Follow me through my past
I was on a Paris train
    I emerged in London rain
    And you were waiting there
    Swimming through apologies

I remember searching for the perfect words
I was hoping you might change your mind
I remember a soldier sleeping next to me
    Riding on the Metro

    You wore white
Smiling as you took my hand
    So removed
We spoke of wintertime in France
    Minutes passed with shallow words
Years have passed and still the hurt
    I can see you now
    Smiling as I pulled away

I remember the letter wrinkled in my hand
"I'll love you always" filled my eyes
I remember a night we walked along the Seine
    Riding on the Metro

I remember a feeling coming over me
The soldier turned, then looked away
I remember hating you for loving me

  • Berlin bass player John Crawford wrote this song. It's about a man riding to Paris to visit his girlfriend. The Metro is the underground transportation system in Paris.
  • The line "thank you for loving me" is often misheard as "f--k you for loving me."
  • System Of A Down covered this in 2000. Their version was used on the soundtrack of Not Another Teen Movie.
  • Berlin couldn't get many radio stations to play this song, but they had better luck with MTV, which put the video in rotation thanks in no small part to lead singer Terri Nunn, who gave them an attractive female to show alongside their Toto and Huey Lewis and the News clips. MTV was still in its infancy, so record companies were stingy with budgets for the videos. Berlin shot the clips for "The Metro" and "Sex" back to back over two days. Nunn was not happy about shooting the subway scene over and over. Exhausted, she got frustrated and started crying, which was the footage they used. Her anger and tears were exactly what the director was looking for.

    Little Too Late
  • This was written by Alex Call, a songwriter and musician who was lead singer in the group Clover (Huey Lewis was also in the group). Says Call, "I wrote that around the same time I wrote '(867-5309).' I was really angry at a guy who had been playing lead guitar with me who had split to go play with somebody else, so that's what the song is about. It wasn't actually a boy-girl thing, it was more like a bandleader-lead guitarist thing - 'You want to come back and play with me, I don't think so, Bud.'"
  • Call: "From a production standpoint, it was kind of funny. There used to be these vinyl LPs called Drum Drops. Drum Drops were just drum tracks recorded by some drummer in a studio. They're like 3 1/2 minute long things. There'd be a fill every 8 bars and a little something every 4 bars. I was going through and went, 'Oh, I kind of like this,' and started playing around. We had the very first drum machines, which were these little cocktail things, they looked like a little suitcase. They had 'Rock 1,' 'Rock 2,' 'Conga,' 'Jazz' and 'Waltz.' One output, a mono output. I used that a lot, I ran it through a little spring reverb, but we're talking about the early days of multitrack home recording. I had a big 15 inch reel 4-track as my recording thing. The way you multitrack on that, you have to flip these sync switches, so when you actually overdub, you're hearing it off the first head, so it was really murky-sounding, like you're playing underwater. When you get done recording, you flip the sync switches back and all of the sudden it sounds great, it sounds clear again. What you do then is, you record 3 tracks of stuff and pong it down to one. Then you record 2 tracks, and pong it down to another 2, so by continuing to pong tracks around, you could record 16 or 24 tracks of stuff, but with each generation, the sound got smaller and smaller. That's how it was done back then, the spring reverbs, the old cocktail drum machines. The drum drops were much better than the drum machines. I only used them on that one song, for everything else, I used 'Rock 1' on my old drum machine."
  • Like "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," this became one of Benatar's most recognizable songs, and is often considered a female-empowerment anthem. Both songs, however, were written by men under interesting circumstances. Says Call, "Somebody said, it's not necessarily the truth, it's somebody's truth. For a song to connect, it has to have some reality to it, but it may be the reality's slightly skewed from what people think." (Check out our interview with Alex Call.)
  • Benatar said of this song: "That was Alex Call. I just liked the song. Some outside songs we rip to pieces. That song is not far from what he originally wrote."

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going Lyrics

And I am tellin' you I'm not goin'
You're best man I've ever known
There's no way I can ever go
    No, no, there's no way
    No, no, no, no, way

    I'm not livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
    I don't wanna be free
    I'm stayin', I'm stayin'
    And you, and you
    You're gonna love me

And I am tellin' you, I'm not goin'
Even though the rough times are showin'
    There's just no way
    There's no way

We're part of the same place
We're part of the same time, yeah
We both share the same blood
We both have the same mind

    And time and time
We have so much to share
No, no, no, no, no, no
I'm not wakin' up tomorrow mornin'
And findin' that there's nobody there

    Darlin' there's no way
    No, no, no, no, way
    I'm livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
You see there's just no way
    There's no way

    Tear down the mountains
    Yell, scream and shout
You can say what you want
    I'm not walkin' out'

    Stop all the rivers
    Push, strike and kill
    I'm not gonna leave you
    There's no way I will

And I am tellin' you, I'm not goin'
You're the best man I'll ever know
There's no way I can ever, ever go
    No, no, no, no, way
    No, no, no, no, way

    I'm livin' without you
    I'm not livin' without you
    Not livin' without you
    I don't wanna be free
    I'm stayin', I'm stayin'
And you, and you, and you
    You're gonna love me
You're gonna love me, yes, ah

    Ooh, ooh, love me
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh love me
Love me, love me, love me
Love me, you're gonna love me

And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going
  • This was from the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which is loosely based on the history of the Supremes. Holliday appeared in the musical playing Effie White. In 1982, she won a Tony for her performance, and the song won a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. That same year, the soundtrack won a Grammy for Best Cast Show Album.
  • Holliday's performance of this song stopped the show and became her signature song. It was then released as a single, became a #1 R&B hit, and led to a career in pop music. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for above 2)
  • Jennifer Hudson played Effie White in the movie adaptation of the show, winning the Best Supporting Actress Award at the 2006 Oscars. Her version of this torch song was released as a single reaching #60 in the US. It also appears on her 2008 self-titled debut album.

    New World Man Lyrics

    He's a rebel and a runner
    He's a signal turning green
    He's a restless young romantic
Wants to run the big machine

He's got a problem with his poisons
But you know he'll find a cure
    He's cleaning up the systems
    To keep his nature pure

Learning to match the beat of the old-world man
Learning to catch the heat of the third-world man

He's got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He's old enough to know what's right
And young enough not to choose it
He's noble enough to win the world
But weak enough to lose it

    He's a new-world man

    He's a radio receiver
    Tuned to factories and farms
He's a writer and ranger and a young boy bearing arms
He's got a problem with his powers
    His weapons on patrol
He's got to walk a fine line
    And keep his self-control

Trying to save the day for the old-world man
Trying to pave the way for the third-world man

    He's not concerned with yesterday
He knows constant change is here today
He's noble enough to know what's right
But weak enough not to choose it
He's wise enough to win the world
But fool enough to lose it

    New World Man
  • Geddy Lee (from Success Under Pressure): "It wouldn't have been on the record if we didn't have four minutes space available. We tend to have pretty strict ideas on how long an album should be and basically it's just a matter of value. Our shortest albums are about 18 minutes a side and that's a pretty good value. I couldn't see us going below that; it doesn't make sense to me. But, at the same time, we're now recording digitally and so we do have certain considerations as to how the whole thing's going to sound when you cut it. There, you're dealing with quality, which is again down to value for money. I think what it really boiled down to was that we'd worked so hard getting all these slick sounds that we were all in the mood to put something down that was real spontaneous. In the end, the whole song took one day to write and record. It's good to put something together like that."
  • Neil Peart (from Stories From Signals, Signals Tourbook): "Writing it in one day and recording it the next! We wanted to capture a spontaneous, relaxed feel for this one, not even spending much time getting the sounds together. Thus, it could stand in contrast to the rest of the album, being much more raw and "live" in its affect. Two days is very close to a record for us to write and record a song." Signals transmitted
    Message received
    Reaction making impact
    Invisibly

    Elemental telepathy
    Exchange of energy
    Reaction making contact
    Mysteriously

    Eye-to-I
    Reaction burning hotter
    Two-to-one
    Reflection on the water
    H-to-O
    No flow without the other
    Oh, but how
    Do they make contact
    With one another?

    Electricity, biology?
    Seems to me it's Chemistry

    Emotion transmitted
    Emotion received
    Music in the abstract
    Positively

    Elemental empathy
    A change of synergy
    Music making contact
    Naturally

    One, two, three
    Add without subtraction
    Sound on sound
    Multiplied reaction
    H-to-O

    Chemistry
  • This is basically about how chemistry is defined, precise in it's own nature. When you add one thing to another it's ALWAYS the same. In contrast, when human individuals connect it's always a different outcome.
  • In a 1986 issue of Guitar for the Practicing Musician, Alex Lifeson said: "Very often the guys will have worked out something musically and made a tape of it for which they have nothing particular in mind. 'Grand Designs,' on the last album, was done that way. They had the musical ideas laid out and just made a little tape for me with guitar, keyboards and drum machine, and I had that. So, again, if I'm stumped on something that I've been working on, I pull out that tape and try to close my mind off for a minute and listen to the tape. 'Chemistry' was a true collaboration between the three of us. The other guys had a couple of key phrases they wanted to express, so they gave me the music. That was easy because all the groundwork was done. Playing with words comes so much easier than having to dream up the whole thing." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)
  • While most Rush songs are written solely by drummer Neil Peart, the lyrics and music on this song are credited to Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart. This is the last song that either Geddy Lee or Alex Lifeson are given credit for lyrics. (thanks, Matthew Daubert - Mequon, WI)

    Subdivisions Lyrics

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
    In geometric order
    An insulated border
    In-between the bright lights
    And the far, unlit unknown

Growing up, it all seems so one-sided
    Opinions all provided
    The future pre-decided
    Detached and subdivided
    In the mass-production zone

    Nowhere is the dreamer
    Or the misfit so alone

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out
    Subdivisions
    In the basement bars
    In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
    The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
    The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths, we drift into the city
    The timeless old attraction
    Cruising for the action
    Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
    Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
    To relax their restless flight

    Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out
    Subdivisions
    In the basement bars
    In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth

    Subdivisions
  • This song is about how narrow-minded and judgmental people can get when they are confined to certain groups - a common occurrence in the suburbs. This is spelled out in the chorus:

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out

It tells of how when you don't meet a certain standard you are basically shunned. (thanks, Chris - Bradenton, FL)
  • Rush's drummer/lyricist Neil Peart said this song is "an exploration of the background from which all of us (and probably most of our audience) have sprung.'"

Peart grew up reading adventure stories and science fiction, which for him were an escape from the confines of suburbia. As he got older, he took full advantage of his freedom, embracing travel and exploring other cultures.
  • Mark Dailey, evening newscaster and "The Voice" of Toronto television station City-TV and also MuchMusic, is the voice that repeats the chorus line "Subdivisions."
  • This song marked a turning point for Neil Peart, whose early Rush lyrics were based in fantasy. "I didn't believe yet that I could put something real into a song," he told Rolling Stone. "'Subdivisions' happened to be an anthem for a lot of people who grew up under those circumstances, and from then on, I realized what I most wanted to put in a song was human experience."

Until you've been beside a man
You don't know what he wants

You don't know if he don't
Where nothing comes easy, old nightmares are real
Until you've been beside a man

    Once inside a woman's heart
A man must keep his head
    Heaven opens up the door

Some men go crazy, some men go slow
Some men go just where they want
    Some men never go

    Oh, blame it on midnight
    Ooh, Shame On The Moon

    Everywhere is all around
    Comfort in the crowd
    Stranger's faces all round
    Laughing right out loud
    Hey, watch where you're goin'
    Step light on old toes
Until you've been beside a man
You don't know who he knows

    Oh, blame it on midnight
    Ooh, shame on the moon

People tell me, I haven't changed at all
But I don't feel the same
And I bet you've had that feeling too
You just can't laugh all the time

    [Chorus]
And if the fires burn out there's only fire to blame
    (Hold Back the Rain)
No time for worry cause we're on the roam again.
    (hold back the rain)
The clouds all scatter and we ride the outside lane
    (hold back the rain)
Not on your own so help me please, hold back the rain

So what if the words ain't rhyming
Did you think that it's just a game
I probably didn't even say that right
    And I really don't give a damn

    Okay go off and wander
    I'm guilty just the same
    Sometimes you're needed badly
    So please come back again

    [Chorus]

And if the stars burn out, theirs only fire to blame

    Hold Back the Rain
  • For two former members of Duran Duran, drugs in general - and cocaine in particular - proved too tempting to decline. Guitarist Andy Taylor became a full-blown cocaine addict rather quickly, and would battle the demons of drug addiction for many years before wresting himself free of its grip.

According to a VH1 Interview, lead singer Simon Le Bon became worried that John was "staying out too late, taking too many drugs, drinking too much, and going home with the wrong kinds of people." As any good songsmith does, Simon took his emotions and put pen to paper, writing a song in March of 1982 that would become recorded as "Hold Back the Rain."

After writing the song, Simon slipped the song under John's door, and claimed that as late as 1993 John had never mentioned the incident to him, or that he knew Simon wrote the song about him. The song did appear on the band's second album, Rio plus included as a B side to the single for "Save a Prayer. It would take many years before John would hear the plea in that song and get help for the drug problems that dogged him, but now he is clean. (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
  • After the band reunited in 2003, this song was brought back into the live rotation. John Taylor told Pop Matters: "Now, when we play it, there’s a feeling of, that’s what we do, you know? That song is what Duran Duran is all about."

Got out of town on a boat goin' to Southern islands
Sailing a reach before a followin' sea
She was makin' for the trades on the outside
And the downhill run to Papeete

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas
We got eighty feet of the waterline nicely making way
In a noisy bar in Avalon I tried to call you
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away

    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(Around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
(Who knows she knows) Who knows love can endure
    And you know it will

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time
You understand now why you came this way
Cause the truth you might be runnin' from is so small
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a comin' day

So I'm sailing for tomorrow my dreams are a dyin'
And my love is an anchor tied to you tied with a silver chain
I have my ship and all her flags are a' flyin'
She is all that I have left and music is her name

    Think about
Think about how many times I have fallen
Spirits are using me larger voices callin'
What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten

(I've been around the world) I have been around the world
(Lookin') Lookin' for that woman girl
    Who knows love can endure
And you know it will, and you know it will yes

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
And we never failed to fail it was the easiest thing to do
    You will survive being bested
Somebody fine will come along make me forget about loving you

    Southern Cross
  • The "Southern Cross" is a constellation also known as the Crux Constellation that can be viewed from most of the Southern hemisphere. The 4 brightest stars within the constellation form a cross pattern. Sailors have relied on the "Southern Cross" to help in navigating their boats. The national flags of Australia and New Zealand have versions of the Southern Cross on them.
  • This was written by Stephen Stills with help from Richard Curtis and Michael Curtis. In the CSN Boxed Set, Stills explained: "The Curtis Brothers brought a wonderful song called 'Seven League Boots,' but it drifted around too much. I rewrote a new set of words and added a different chorus, a story about a long boat trip I took after my divorce. It's about using the power of the universe to heal your wounds. Once again, I was given somebody's gem and cut and polished it."
  • Jimmy Buffett covered this on his 1999 album Buffett Live: Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays. (thanks, Amy - Chicago, IL, for all above)
  • There is a vocal mistake in the line "But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day." One of the vocalists says "coming" on the first "promise." (thanks, Dave - Leesburg, VA)
  • Since this song is based on a song called "Seven League Boots," it bears mentioning that seven-league boots are a common magical artifact which crops up repeatedly in many European folk and fairy tales. They're a pair of boots which allow the wearer to take strides that are seven leagues (21 miles, 33.8 kilometers) long. The same concept of footwear that greatly increases one's traveling speed or stride is adapted into many role-playing and video games.
  • This same year that "Southern Cross" came out also saw David Crosby arrested on drug-related charges. He would be in and out of court on them numerous times until he finally turned himself in for an 8-month sentence.
  • The video for this song, with a ship a-sail, saw heavy rotation in the early MTV years, providing a soft rock respite from the European pop acts that dominated the network at the time.
  • The cover art for the Daylight Again album features an enigmatic domed structure on a rocky hilltop, flanked by three glowing blue flying saucers. The US was in the midst of a resurgence in UFO popularity in the late-'70s and early-'80s, bolstered by the writings of Chariots of the Gods author Erich von Daniken and renewed interest in Area 51.

    Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie

She took me in and gave me breakfast
    And she said

Do you come from a land Down Under?

He was six-foot-four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich
    And he said

I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover
    Yeah

Lyin' in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
    And he said

Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?

    Down Under
  • The "Land Down Under" is Australia, where the group is from. The lyrics were written by lead singer Colin Hay, who told us: "The chorus is really about the selling of Australia in many ways, the over-development of the country. It was a song about the loss of spirit in that country. It's really about the plundering of the country by greedy people. It is ultimately about celebrating the country, but not in a nationalistic way and not in a flag-waving sense. It's really more than that."
  • Hay told us about composing the song: "It's a very important song for me. It always felt like a strong song, right from the start. Originally, the idea came from a little bass riff that Ron Strykert, the guitar player for Men at Work, had recorded on a little home cassette demo. It was just a little bass riff with some percussion that he played on bottles which were filled with water to varying degrees to get different notes. It was a very intriguing little groove. I really loved it, it had a real trance-like quality to it. I used to listen to it in the car all the time. When I was driving along one day in Melbourne, the chords popped out and a couple of days later I wrote the verses."
  • Barry Humphries is an Australian entertainer who has created many popular characters, including Dame Edna Everidge. He was also the voice of Bruce the Shark in the movie Finding Nemo. Colin explained his influence on this song: "He's a master of comedy and he had a lot of expressions that we grew up listening to and emulating. The verses were very much inspired by a character he had called Barry McKenzie, who was a beer-swilling Australian who traveled to England, a very larger-than-life character."
  • Some lyric translation:
Fried out Kombi - a broken-down van. The lyrics are often translated as "Combie," but the correct spelling is Kombi. It came from the VW Kombivan which was very popular in the '60s and early '70s, especially with surfers and hippies.
Head full of Zombie - Zombie was a particularly strong batch of marijuana which was floating around Australia for a long time. People called it "Zombie Grass."
Vegemite Sandwich - Vegemite is a fermented yeast spread that is pretty much a national institution in Australia. Some people love it and can't start the day without a piece of toast spread with Vegemite, and some go so far as to carry a small jar of it with them when they travel overseas. Some are indifferent to it, and others can't stand it. It kind of resembles smooth black tar, and is similar in taste to the English "Marmite," but Aussies will always tell you that Vegemite is far superior. Regarding the lyrics, "Where beer does flow, and men chunder..." Chunder is Aussie slang meaning to vomit.
  • This song is often misinterpreted as a patriotic anthem. Says Colin: "It's ironic to me that so many people thought it was about a specific thing and that really wasn't the intention behind the song. If you listen to 'Born In The USA,' it's a similar song in that there's a lot of nuance missed because people like drinking beer and throwing their arms up in the air and feeling nationalistic. It's ultimately a song about celebration, but it's a matter of what you choose to celebrate about a country or a place. White people haven't been in Australia all that long, and it's truly an awesome place, but one of the most interesting and exciting things about the country is what was there before. The true heritage of a country often gets lost in the name of progress and development."
  • Colin: "I love the song, I have strong feelings about it because it's looked after me for many, many years."
  • In 2003, Colin recorded 2 new versions for his album Man At Work. The first is an acoustic version he included so people could hear how the song sounded originally, before Men at Work did it. Colin's wife, Cecilia, has a Latin Salsa band, and on the second version he recorded her horn section and flute parts, combining them with his tracks.
  • This became an unofficial national anthem when Australia won the America's Cup in 1983, an event the United States had never lost. The then Prime Minister of Australia, Bob Hawke, was so delighted with Australia's win, he gave the whole country the day off and announced on the news that any boss who fired an employee for taking the day off "is a bum!" (thanks, Jude - Melbourne, Australia)
  • The quirky video became a huge hit on MTV. The network had been on the air for only a year, and they didn't have many videos to choose from. Men at Work didn't know much about MTV, but British and Australian bands had been making videos for some time. The band made videos that fit their personality, often improvising scenes and using their friends for help. The guy who stands up and offers the Vegemite sandwich is the band's drummer, Jerry Speiser. He wasn't really "6 foot 4 and full of muscles," he had to stand on something to get extra height. He also wore a wig.
  • Men at Work hit big in the summer of 1982 and through the next year had 5 Top 40 singles: "Who Can It Be Now?," "Down Under," "Overkill", "I's A Mistake" and "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive," the first two of which vaulted all the way to #1 on the American charts. 1982 was also the year the band won the Best New Artist Grammy. (thanks, Victor - Boston, MA)
  • This was a huge worldwide hit. For 2 weeks, both the single and album were #1 in the US and UK. It was also #1 in Australia. (Thanks to Colin for speaking with us about this song. To learn more or to check out his album, go to www.colinhay.com)
  • Men at Work recorded the first version of "Down Under" in 1980 in Melbourne and released it independently as the B-side to a forgettable song called "Keypunch Operator." They released it on a label they called M.A.W. - about 300 copies. This early version of the song here is a crude, pale predecessor to the global hit and testament to the wonders a good producer can do. (thanks, steve - Sydney, Australia)
  • In 2009, the music publishing company that owns the rights to the Australian children's song "Kookaburra" sued the "Down Under" songwriters, claiming the flute riff copied the children's classic. On February 4, 2010, Justice Jacobson ruled in favour of Larrakin Music who own "Kookaburra's" publishing rights - the song having been originally penned by music teacher Marion Sinclair in 1932. In his judgment he said that Men At Work had infringed Larrikin's copyright because "Down Under" reproduced "a substantial part of Kookaburra."

Colin Hay said after the judgment: "I'll go to my grave knowing 'Down Under' is an original piece of work. In over 20 years no one noticed the reference to 'Kookaburra.' Marion Sinclair never made any claim that we had appropriated any part of her song, and she was alive when 'Down Under' was a hit. Apparently she didn't notice either."

Greg Ham, who contributed the controversial flute part, told Melbourne's The Age newspaper: "It will be the way the song is remembered, and I hate that. I'm terribly disappointed that that's the way I'm going to be remembered - for copying something."

    Gimme The Car
  • This song is about someone trying to talk his dad into letting him have the car for the night for the sole purpose of date-raping someone he knows, probably by intoxicating her and taking advantage while she is helpless. Lead singer/songwriter Gordon Gano has said that this song is in no way autobiographic, but rather a snapshot of teen angst that (almost) everyone has encountered at least once. He also says that it's one of his parents least favorite Femmes songs, though they are always supportive of his musical ventures. (thanks, James - Iowa City, IA)
  • Gordon Gano was expelled from his school because of this song. He was asked to play an appropriate song for an assembly and he played this instead. The Femmes made a reference to this event in a song called "Kiss Off." When Gano sings, "this will go down on your permanent record," he is referring to his expulsion.
  • Along with "Ugly," this is a bonus track featured on the reissue of The Femmes debut 1983 album. It can also be found on the compilation album Add It Up: 1983-1993. (thanks, Kristy - La Porte City, IA)

    Old and Wise Lyrics

As far as my eyes can see
    There are Shadows approaching me
And to those I left behind
    I wanted you to Know
You've always shared my deepest thoughts
    You follow where I go

And oh when I'm Old and Wise
Bitter words mean little to me
Autumn Winds will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they asked me if I knew you
I'd smile and say you were a friend of mine
And the sadness would be Lifted from my eyes
Oh when I'm old and wise

As far as my Eyes can see
    There are shadows surrounding me
And to those I leave behind
I want you all to know
You've always Shared my darkest hours
I'll miss you when I go

And oh, when I'm old and wise
Heavy words that tossed and blew me
Like Autumn winds that will blow right through me
And someday in the mist of time
When they ask you if you knew me
Remember that You were a friend of mine
As the final curtain falls before my eyes
Oh when I'm Old and wise

As far as my eyes can see

    Old and Wise
  • Alan Parsons wrote this song with his partner in the group, Eric Woolfson. The song is about a man approaching death, addressing those he knew with fond remembrance, as he now has no time for bitter memories.
  • The Alan Parsons Project used a variety of vocalists, and on this one, Zombies lead singer Colin Blunstone sings lead. Parsons and Blunstone had known each other for quite a while, as Parsons was an engineer on the 1968 Zombies album Odessey and Oracle, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, the same place the Eye in the Sky sessions were held. Blunstone got to know Eric Woolfson through Parsons.

In our interview with Blunstone , he talked about how this song came together. Said Blunstone: "I was talking to Eric one night in Abbey Road and he said, 'I'd like to play you this song' and we walked into a deserted Studio Three - Alan Parsons usually used Studio Two, which is the same studio The Beatles used most of the time – but we walked into Studio Three, which is where The Zombies recorded 'Time Of The Season.' Eric sat down and played me that song on the piano, and I thought, 'That's a wonderful song.' He said, 'Well, we'd like you to have a go at putting a vocal on it.' And that's what happened.

So the first time I heard it was Eric playing the song live in its entirety in Studio Three in Abbey Road. I just thought it was a wonderful song. Still do."
