Rocket's Tail Lyrics

That Novenber night, looking up into the sky.
You said "Hey wish that was me up there
It's the biggest rocket I could find
And it's holding the night in its arms
If for only a moment.
I can't see the look in its eyes
But I'm sure it must be laughing."
But it seemed to me the saddest thing I'd ever seen
And I thought you were crazy wishing such a thing.

I saw only a stick on fire
Alone on its journey
Home to the quickening ground
With no one there to catch it.

I put on my pointed hat
And my black and silver suit
And I check my gunpowder pack
And I strap the stick on my back
And dressed as a rocket on Waterloo Bridge
Nobody seemed to see me
Then with the fuse in my hand
And now shooting into the night
And still as a rocket
I land in the river.

Was it me said you were crazy?
I put on my cloudiest suit
Size 5 lightening boots too
'Coz I am a rocket
On fire
Look at me go with my tail on fire
With my tail on fire
On fire
Hey, look at me go, look at me

Rocket's Tail
  • This song features backing vocals by Trio Bulgarka, a traditional Bulgarian vocal ensemble that appears throughout The Sensual World. "Rocket's actually my cat, but it was written for the Bulgarian girls," Bush explained to NME. "Ridiculous collection of images, nothing to do with Rocket really, he just started it all off. At the time the only song I could think of that mentioned rockets was 'Rocket Man' but since then there has been about three of them. I feel a bit like the Python sketch with that guy making eight-millimetre films saying 'Hitchcock had his Rear Window out while mine was still at the chemists'."

Bush actually recorded "Rocket Man" a couple of years later for the tribute album Two Rooms: Celebrating the Songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. Her reggae-inflected cover was a commercial success, peaking at #12 on the UK singles chart. In 2007 it won The Observer readers' award for Greatest Cover of all time.
  • The song features guitar by Bush's early music mentor, Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour.

Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart Lyrics

Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart
  • This was originally a #5 hit for Gene Pitney in the UK in 1967. When Almond covered the song in 1989, he invited Pitney to sing on it with him, which Pitney was happy to do.
  • This hit #1 in many countries including the UK, but Pitney's record label refused to release it in America, where Pitney was from. They were afraid that young listeners who were not familiar with Pitney or Almond would think they were a gay couple.
  • Almond was a member of the group Soft Cell, who had a hit with "Tainted Love" and broke up in 1984. He went on to have a very successful solo career, with many hit songs in the UK.
  • Gene Pitney in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh: "I was in the UK and my agent asked me if I would like to re-record one of my hits with Marc Almond. I was happy with that because 'Tainted Love' is a classic. I was playing in Bristol and I had to be in London for 10 in the morning to record my vocal 3 or 4 times. Then I went up north for another show. Marc's arrangement was very different from mine, so I was singing it one way in the morning and a different way that night! Our 2 vocals were edited together and I couldn't believe the result because it sounded so like we were standing next to each other, and I had never met him."

Arnold and Pitney met up for the video at the Neon Junkyard in Las Vegas. Gene says, "It was the only place in the world where you could have a neon junkyard. It was full of old neon signs and they wired up these old signs and parts of them lit up. It freezes out there at night in the wintertime and the cameramen were wearing blankets and coats, but the record was booming across the desert and it sounded great."
  • In an interview with Mojo Magazine January 2008, Marc Almond was asked if he was aware of the cheese factor when he recorded this duet. Almond replied: "I'm not sure. I'd been doing that song in live shows, so I went to see him play at Bow Town Hall (in East London) to an audience of loyal housewives. Gene was a great singer, and a consummate professional, but he was in the cold winter of his career. I joked to EMI that maybe Gene would be interested in doing a guest backing vocal of the song. Clive Black called him up, and Gene was straight there, stripped off to the waist in the studio and giving it his all. I didn't think of it as camp or cheesy. I was simply thrilled that he was doing it. The record was #1 all over Europe, and Gene was soon back in all the big theatres."

    Pump Up The Jam
  • Technotronic was a Belgian group assembled by producer and DJ Jo Bogaert. The idea was to mix European house music with Hip-Hop, and it worked very well for a few years. Technotronic also charted with "Get Up! (Before The Night Is Over)" (#7 US) and "Move This" (#6 US).
  • Manuella "Ya Kid K" Komosi was the lead vocalist on this and most other Technotronic songs, but she was not in the video or on the album cover, which instead featured Zairean-born fashion model Felly lip-synching the lyrics. Felly had nothing to do with recording the song, and didn't speak English. Bogaert used her to establish an image for the group, even if it meant some awkward miming in the video. Around the same time, C&C Music factory did something similar when they had a model pretend to sing the parts of Martha Wash on hits like "Gonna Make You Sweat." Snap! also used a fake singer in their video for "The Power." When Technotronic toured with DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Felly didn't come along - they were fronted by their real vocalists Ya Kid K and MC Eric.
  • In 2005, DONS (the German production duo Ollie Goedicke and Frank Sieben) remixed this. The new version became a dance hit and charted in the UK.
  • As this became popular song among DJs and the DONS version became a hit, demand for the original 12" single got so high that copies were changing hands on the Internet for over $100.
  • This song was featured in the 1996 movie, Space Jam, in a scene where Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes cast prepare for a basketball game against "The Monstars," a group of transformed NBA players.

    Debaser
  • This weird and aggressive song was inspired by the cruel and surrealistic movie Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog) by Spanish moviemaker Luis Bunuel. The song is about the movie "debasing" morality in the art world.
  • The reference to "Slicing up eyeballs" in the opening lyrics is to a shocking scene in Un Chien Andalou where an eyeball is being sliced open.
  • If the lyrics in this song don't make much sense, that's because Pixies frontman Frank Black was more concerned with the sounds of the words rather than their meanings. "It has more to do with rhyming words and getting things to mathematically fit in a nice way in my songs," he said. "I don't think about the words too much, I just come up with them, things that just pop into my head."
  • "Debaser" has many features of a Nirvana song (opens with a bass solo, start/stop rhythms, lurching and noisy guitar solo, and loud/soft dynamics). This is because the Pixies were one of Kurt Cobain's main influences. Cobain said that when writing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" he was trying to imitate "Debaser" musically and lyrically. The guitar riffs of the two songs are very similar.
  • "Weird Al" Yankovic's "First World Problems" digs at trivial issues of the privileged class via a Pixies homage. The beginning of the song, featured on his 2014 Mandatory Fun album, is a nod to this song.

    Toy Soldiers Lyrics

It wasn't my intention to mislead you
It never should have been this way,
    What can I say?
It's true I did extend the invitation,
I never knew how long you'd stay,
    When you hear temptation call
    It's your heart that takes,
    Takes the fall

Won't you come out and play with me?

    [Chorus]
    Step by step,
    Heart to heart
    Left, right, left
    We all fall down
    Like Toy Soldiers
    Bit by bit torn apart,
    We never win,
    But the battle wages on
    For toy soldiers

It's getting hard to wake up in the morning,
    My head is spinning constantly,
    How can it be?
How could I be so blind to this addiction?
    If I don't stop
The next one's gonna be me
    Only emptiness remains,
    It replaces all the pain.

Won't you come out and play with me?

    [Chorus]

    (We never win)

    Only emptiness remains (ahh)
    It replaces all the pain,

Won't you come out and play with me?

  • This is about drug addiction and how drugs can control you like children control their toys - Metallica's "Master Of Puppets" has a similar theme. In an interview that aired on VH1, Martika said that she wrote this song about a friend who was hooked on cocaine. (thanks, Camille - Toronto, OH)
  • Martika (her real name is Marta Marrera) was born in May 1969 in Whittier, California. Her Cuban parents left their home country during a revolution. Martika started acting before launching a recording career, appearing in the film version of Annie in 1982 and on the TV series Kids Incorporated from 1984 to 1986. In 1988 her first single, "More Than You Know," landed on the American charts; a year later, this was released as the follow up." (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

  • The title track of Debbie Gibson's second album was about empowering the young generation. As a teenager herself, Gibson felt that the beliefs and ideas held by the youth were just as important as those held by adults. It also reminded them that the future belonged to the youngsters, or the "Electric Youth."
  • Gibson recalled to Billboard magazine regarding the song title in January 2014: "That was one of those channeled titles that I feel was meant to be a phrase infused into pop culture at the time. I never really put any thought into coming up with it. Literally, it, and the song, dropped in and I looked up to the sky, waved and said 'thank you! To me, that's how anything inspired comes. If you and your thinking get out of the way, the universe provides what is supposed to be and it comes on through."

    Pop Singer
  • "The most crucial thing for me is that I want it to be real."

That's what Mellencamp told Creem magazine in 1987. Two years later, he released a song about it. In "Pop Singer," he explains that the music is what is important to him, and that he has no use for the gladhanding, trend-following or fan interaction that is expected of Pop Stars.

Mellencamp wasn't always so "real" - his manager had him use the stage name "Johnny Cougar," which took him years to reverse. He soon took control of his career, however, and did things on his terms. Any part of the job that isn't related to making or performing music is something Mellencamp avoids. He will begrudgingly do promotion, but refuses corporate music traditions like radio station concerts and meet-and-greets. This stance didn't endear him to industry types, but many fans found his candor refreshing and appreciated his authenticity and devotion to his craft.
  • When he wrote this song, Mellencamp was going through a divorce with his second wife, Victoria Granucci. "I was questioning the importance of music," he told Rolling Stone. "Everybody was having to kiss everybody's ass. If you want to be on MTV, then come here and do this. All these backroom deals were getting made. I was like, 'I don't want any part of this.'"

    Pray God you can cope.
I stand outside This Woman's Work,

Ooh, it's hard on the man,
    Now his part is over.
Now starts the craft of the father.

I know you've got a little life in you yet.
I know you've got a lot of strength left.
I know you've got a little life in you yet.
I know you've got a lot of strength left.

I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking

Of all the things I should've said,
    That I never said.
All the things we should've done,
    Though we never did.
All the things I should've given,
    But I didn't.

    Oh, darling, make it go,
    Make it go away.

    Give me these moments back.
    Give them back to me.
    Give me that little kiss.

    This Woman's Work
  • Bush wrote this for a sequence in the movie She's Having A Baby where a man is waiting helplessly in a hospital while his wife gives birth in the next room. She wrote it from the man's point of view.
  • A cover by the R&B American artist Maxwell was released as a single in 2001, peaking at #56 on the Hot 100.
  • Bush told the NME: "It was written for John Hughes' film She's Having A Baby. Really light comedy about this young guy who gets married, very much a kid. His wife is pregnant and it's alright until they get to the hospital and the baby's in the breach position.

That's the sequence I have to write the songs about and it's really very moving, him in the waiting room, having flashbacks of his wife and him going for walks, decoration... It's exploring his sadness and guilt, suddenly it's the point where he has to grow up. He'd been such a wally up to this point."
  • Bush re-recorded the song for her 2011 album, Director's Cut, in which she updated a selection of tracks from The Sensual World and The Red Shoes.
  • The song returned to the UK singles chart at #63 in April 2012 after contestant Hope Murphy performed it on Britain's Got Talent. Maxwell's cover also entered the top 75 for the first time when it reached #41 the same week.

    Hope is epidemic

    Chain Lightning
  • Neil Peart (from the Rush Profiled! CD): "I'm a weather fanatic - I really love weather, and I watch the weather and look for a good weatherman. And, one night I was watching it, and there are two incidents in that song that are Synchronicity to one weather report, where the weatherman showed a picture of sun dogs, and described them, and they are just two little points of light that appear at sunset, often in the winter when the sky is clear and crystalline, and they are like little prisms, and they sit about ten degrees north and south of the setting sun, and they are just beautiful little diamonds of light, and often times there's a circle of light - one line, that connects them. So they are a really beautiful natural phenomenon, and I love the name too. 'Sun dogs' just has a great sound to it. And in that same weather forecast, the weatherman announced a meteor shower that night, and so my daughter and I went out on the lake in the middle of the night and watched this meteor shower. So the whole idea of the song was response and how people respond to things, and it's a thing I've found a lot in traveling around the world, too. It's not enough just to travel and see things. You have to respond to them - you have to feel them, and a lot of the thrust of that song is how things are transferred, like chain lightning or enthusiasm or energy or love are things that are contagious, and if someone feels them, they are easily transferable to another person, or in the case of watching a meteor shower, it's made more special if there is someone else there. 'Reflected in another pair of eyes' is the idea that it's a wonderful thing already, just you and the meteor shower, but if there's someone else there with you to share it, then it multiplies, you know, it becomes exponentially a bigger experience, so response is a theme that recurs in several of the songs and was one of my probably dominant sub-themes in the writing." Available Light Lyrics

    The restless wind
    Has seen all things
    In every kind of light
    Rising with the full Moon
To go howling through the night

    The sleepless wind
    Has heard all things
    Between the sea and sky
In the canyons of the city
You can hear the buildings cry

    Oh the wind can carry
All the voices of the sea
    Oh the wind can carry
All the echoes home to me

    Run with wind and weather
To the music of the sea
    All four winds together
Can't bring the world to me
Chase the wind around the world
I want to look at life
    In the Available Light

    Play of light
    A photograph
The way I used to be
    Some half-forgotten stranger
Doesn't mean that much to me

    Trick of light
    Moving picture
    Moments caught in flight
    Make the shadows darker
Or the colors shine too bright

    Oh the light can carry
All the visions of the sea
    Oh the light can carry
    All the images to me

    Run to light from shadow
    Sun gives me no rest
    Promise offered in the east
    Broken in the west
Chase the sun around the world
I want to look at life
    In the available light

    All four winds together
Can't bring the world to me
Shadows hide the play of light
So much I want to see
Chase the light around the world
I want to look at life
    In the available light

    I'll go with the wind
    I'll stand in the light

    Available Light
  • Geddy Lee (Guitar World, March 1990): "On a tune like 'Available Light,' where the bass just provides some simple, low-end support, I'd rather play the keyboards and sing. It's just a question of what instrument will be rewarding to play from a player's point of view. If the keyboard is simply playing a strict, four-chord repeating pattern, then I'd rather just program it into some MIDI pedal and have some fun playing bass." Anagram Lyrics

There's a snake coming out of the darkness
    Parade from paradise
    End the need for Eden
    Chase the dreams of merchandise

There is tic and toc in atomic
    Leaders make a deal
    The cosmic is largely comic
    A con they couldn't conceal

There is no safe seat at the feast
Take your best stab at the beast
    The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

    Raise the art to resistance
    Danger dare to be grand
    Pride reduced to humble pie
    Diamonds down to sand

Take heart from earth and weather
    The brightness of new birth
    Take heart from the harvest
Shave the harvest from the earth

    Reasoning is partly insane
    Image just an eyeless game
    The night is turning thin
The saint is turning to sin

    Miracles will have their claimers
    More will bow to Rome
He and she are in the house
But there's only me at home

Rose is a rose of splendor
Posed to respond in the end
    Lonely things like nights
I find, end finer with a friend

I hear in the rate of her heart
A tear in the heat of the art

    The night turns thin
    The saint turns to sin

  • Within each line of the song is a word that contains letters from another word. For example:
"There is no safe SEAT at the FEAST
Take your best STAB at the BEAST
    The NIGHT is wearing THIN
The SAINT is turning to SIN"
(thanks, Matthew Daubert - Mequon, WI)
  • Geddy Lee (from "Rush Profiled!"): "It doesn't really say one thing; it says a bunch of little things, and I think that's OK as long as it sounds good. You know, as long as it rolls off the tongue kind of thing? So I think different songs are different exercises, to a degree, and I think that if they feel like exercises, then there's something wrong with the song. But if they can slip by in a kind of cohesive and fluid way, or if the effect is to be disjoint, and sometimes that's what you're after. Sometimes you want it to be jarring and disjointed and nonsensical. I think it depends on what you're trying to do, and whether you've achieved it in your mind, and whether it actually worked, and 'Anagram,' I think, did work, even though it's a game - the whole song is a game. The choruses are quite smooth and quite interesting, and they have a nice sound to them and they kind of mock the whole song itself, so I think it was effective there."
  • (for Mongo) Is added to the name of this song title on the album. It's a joke from the movie Blazing Saddles, referring to the "Candygram for Mongo" scene, according to Geddy on "Rockline" 12/4/89. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)

    Ride On Time
  • Black Box was made up of three Italian producers: Mirko Limoni, Daniele Davoli and Valerio Semplici. They also recorded as Groove Groove Melody.
  • Was the biggest-selling single in the UK in 1989. It spent 6 weeks at #1. It is still one of the top 100 best selling singles ever in most of Europe.
  • The success of this record was marred with controversy when it was revealed that the vocals had been sampled from Loleatta Holloway's "Love Sensation," a disco song written and produced by Dan Hartman and released in 1980. The group had hired French model Katrin Quniol to pose as their singer. Quniol couldn't speak English and had trouble lip synching the song on music shows. It has been argued that the combination of Black Box's excellent production, Holloway's powerful voice and Quinol's good looks made the record such a success, but the controversy still tarnishes the record.
  • Although this was by far their biggest hit, Black Box didn't make much money from it as Holloway sued them. There is still no love lost between them. Black Box later claimed that Holloway was crying crocodile tears and pointed out that she got an expensive fur coat out of the compensation money they had to pay her. Holloway still maintains she was upset that the group had "stolen her voice" and to add insult to injury they pretended someone else was singing the song, and that even though she won the case she still felt that the damage had been done.
  • Other producers later sampled Holloway's vocals from "Love Sensation," including Cevin Fisher on "(You Got Me) Burning Up" and Marky Mark And The Funky Bunch on the US chart topper "Good Vibrations." Unlike Black Box, both credited Loleatta Holloway.
  • A few remixed versions have been released over the years, some with Holloway's vocals removed and replaced by a soundalike session singer, though one was released in 2003 credited as Black Box featuring Loleatta Holloway.
  • Apart from this song and two instrumentals, all the songs on Black Box's debut album Dreamland featured vocals from Martha Wash, one half of The Weather Girls. Wash was uncredited and the group still used Katrin Quniol to lip-sync the songs for the videos. Sadly for Wash, this wasn't an unusual experience for her as around the same time, her vocals were featured on C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," again lip-synched by a model in the video.
  • Among the songs on Dreamland is a cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Fantasy." (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England, for all above)
  • Daniele Davoli (from 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): "People were dancing to the new piano sound, even though it sounded quite different. The piano sound wasn't that big in Italy until after we had the success in England. Mirko came to the club where I was DJing. I would play the keyboard and sampler, but it was such a small sampler, I only had space for 2 or 3 lines. The main sound I created was a wah-wah-wah-wah-wah effect and incorporated into nearly every record I played. Mirko said to me, 'I couldn't help noticing that, what was it?' I said, 'It was from this acapella that I got from an old record.' Mirko said, 'Bring it in to the studio and I think we can do something with it.'" (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)

Bell on door clanks, come on in

Sit down chair, don't be afraid
Steamed hot towel on my face

    I'm ashamed [x3]

Barney ties me to the chair
    I can't see, I'm really scared
Floyd breathes hard, I hear a zip
    Pee-pee pressed against my lips

    I was shamed [x3]

I sense others in the room
    Opie, Aunt Bee, I presume
They take turns and cut me up
I die smothered in Andy's clutch

    Floyd The Barber
  • This song is about a small American town where everyone has become a mass murderer. A man goes into a barber shop for a haircut and (in a more detailed way) gets a hot towel put over his face, tied to the chair, is forced to suck Floyd's privates and is cut up and slashed to death by the other people he sensed in the room. (thanks, Jeff - La Pine, OR)
  • The people mentioned in this song are all based on characters from The Andy Griffith Show. Kurt Cobain wrote the song thinking, "What if all these people were mad, sadistic, killers?" The guy in the song went into the barber shop for a shave, but instead gets urinated on by Floyd, cut up by Opie and Aunt Bea, and suffocated by Andy Griffith. (thanks, Jarrett - Somewhere, Canada)
  • The band was known as Skid Row when they first started playing this in 1987. They recorded it for the first time at KAOS, the student-run radio station of Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.

Once again it's time to buy more soul
A flavor you will savor in your soul
Wax is distributed and then sold
So watch it turn, bring your next of kin soul
P.A. Mase has rocked it on the console
Scream real hard until you blow your tonsils
Bang-oh-bang until you burn your shoe soles
Cause you are now dancing to the new soul

Live is the motion of the soul step
Set the exposure to my one step
This scene'll last to the next step
All those in favor take a big step
True to the Soul, we'll never back step
In sense to that, we don't half step
Just as a reminder from the last step
Negative ones are lost in footsteps

Levels we've set will never go down
    Competitions commence the step down
Those involved with peace who know the Soul's down
Can see that the Soul has got a new sound
Dance until you find yourself a new part
If you don't then I'll give you the True part
When received you'll see the real small part
Of the new way is no part at all

Pos and Dove is rarely caught not dressed in peace
Movements always walking round now stressing peace
When this biter should know true in peace
Instead they cause violence and shoot out beef
Still we are professing to be on a roll
Public cause this party going on the road
And if you crave sex, drugs and rock'n'roll
Sent by the Quest, Jungle and De La Soul

    Give 'em a taste, Mase

Then we just decided to put the 'Bra' song from Cymade on it, we just started mashing things. We all worked together really well as a foursome, just trying to add different things."

    Crackity Jones
  • Lead singer Frank Black wrote the lyrics about the frighteningly violent (crackity), gay roommate he had when he lived in Puerto Rico in 1985. He recalled to Mojo magazine May 2014: "Looking back, he just had some mental health issues. I found him frightening, a little mysterious." (thanks, Eulbie - New York, NY)
  • Like he did on several Pixies songs, Frank Black inserted some Spanish words and phrases in the lyric. During the six months he spent in Puerto Rico (on an exchange program when he was a student at the University of Massachusetts), Black learned just a bit of Spanish, so it was always a bit disjointed when he used the language in his songs. Here's the translation of the Spanish in this song:

"paco picopiedra" - Fred Flintstone (should really be "Pedro Picapiedra")
    "la muñeca" - the doll
    "hospedaje" - dorm room
    "goofiar" - goof off
    "automovil" - car
  • At Pixies shows, the mosh pits would amp up during this song, as it's a perfect track to release some aggression.

    Transmitting Live from Mars
  • The original concept behind De La Soul was that Mase was PA and Posdnuos and Dove were the microphone plugs, transmitting messages from Mars. The idea was quickly abandoned but was used for the title of this short skit.
  • The short interlude is basically a French language lesson merged with a loop culled from The Turtles "You Showed Me" and Wilson Pickett's version of "Hey Jude." Posdnous recalled to Rolling Stone: "My pops had this 45 - I don't know why he had this record - it was this French instructional record. I thought it would sound cool with this Wilson Pickett cover of 'Hey Jude,' and then Paul had the Turtles record ['You Showed Me'], so he said let's put that with it, so we just added it all together."
  • The Turtles sample resulted in a $1.7 million copyright-infringement lawsuit that was eventually settled out of court. The legal action also set a precedent, which stymied Hip-Hop's methods of production. The new laws delayed a number of albums, including the trio's follow-up, De La Soul is Dead. When the record was finally released it was stripped of many samples and struggled to repeat the success of 3 Feet High.

The best buddy's in evening wear
Long lovin' less Tru know (he's in there)
I feel sorry for those who pay a fare (a fee) word to the D
I don't beg I just tease my buddy with my right leg
And when it's ready what's said is buddy is best in bed

Fly buddy told us all to get into a circle
Said don't worry cause I won't hurt you
All I really wanna do is freak you (she freaked us)

And I watched and then I checked my swatch
    To see the time
The Soul had formed a buddy line
And that buddy was (mine all mine)

Now when Tribe, the Jungle, and De La Soul
Is at the clubs our ritual unfolds
Grab our bones and start swingin' our hands
(Then Jenny start flockin' it everywhere)
Cause Jenifa just wants to stay aware
Yo fellas should we keep her aware
    (Mmm Hmm, yeah!)

    Buddy
  • The original version of this song heard on 3 Feet High and Rising featured the Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. Posdnous recalled to Rolling Stone: "Mase would always play the Commodores record ['Girl, I Think the World About You'] and we figured, let's make a song out of it. We didn't know what it would be called, the idea of 'Buddy' had come up and we had a session planned in about to week to record it, and we had a show with Q-Tip and Jungle [Brothers], meeting them for the first time."

"It was never planned for Jungle Brothers to be on that first album," he added. "They happened to come to that session while we were recording that song and we were like, 'Hey, you want to get on it?' and lo and behold, that's how we became the Native Tongues."
  • The New York-based Native Tongues posse was a collective of like-minded Hip-Hop artists who would often collaborate together. This song's remix included all the major members of the Native Tongues crew, adding Queen Latifah and Monie Love to the already featured Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip.

    Epic Lyrics

Can you feel it, see it, hear it today
If you can't, then it doesn't matter anyway
You will never understand it 'cause it happens too fast
And it feels so good, it's like walking on glass
It's so cool, it's so hip, it's alright
It's so groovy, it's outta sight
You can touch it, smell it, taste it so sweet
But it makes no difference 'cause it knocks you off your feet

You want it all but you can't have it

It's cryin, bleedin, lying on the floor
So you lay down on it and you do it some more
You've got to share it, so you dare it
Then you bare it and you tear it

You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it

    It's alive, afraid, a lie, a sin
    It's magic, it's tragic, it's a loss, it's a win
    It's dark, it's moist, it's a bitter pain
It's sad it happened and it's a shame

You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it
    What is it?
    Is it
    What is it?
    Is it
    What is it?
    Is it
    What is it?
    Is it
    What is it?

You want it all but you can't have it
It's in your face but you can't grab it

    Epic
  • Mike Patton joined Faith No More in 1989 and wrote the song's enigmatic lyrics, which constantly allude to "it," without ever explaining what "it" is.

The bridge simply consists of the band shouting, "It's it," while Patton responds with, "What is it?" (The word "epic" is never mentioned in the lyrics.

Patton gave some insight on the song's meaning when he told Circus magazine in 1990: "It was about sexual frustration. Sex and lack of sex."

Later in the interview, the topic of masturbation comes up, and Patton says: "Most people don't like to talk about it. I'm here to tell ya, I love it. That's kinda of what Epic's really about."
  • The music for "Epic" was written before frontman, Mike Patton, had joined the band. In our interview with bassist, Billy Gould, he explained: "It was conceived naturally as a riff in the studio between Roddy (Bottum, keyboardist), myself and Mike Bordin (drummer) during rehearsal that later got fleshed out into an entire song."
  • This was Faith No More's breakthrough hit single. Billy Gould told us that the record label, Slash, was ready to give up on the band, and, ironically, released "Epic" as a last resort: "At the time it was our favorite song on the album, but no one from the record label seemed too interested in it. In fact, we had done a video for 'From Out Of Nowhere' which didn't get much traction, and the label told us, 'Hey guys, the album didn't work. We'll do one more video for whatever song you want.' So we picked 'Epic' because it just felt the most natural at the time. We had very little expectations of it becoming a commercial hit."
  • Billy Gould explained in 1997: "A lot of our songs start music first, lyrics later, and it was called 'Epic' as a kind of code word before the words came along. Patton wrote the words to it about a week after he joined the band. I remember him explaining it to me and I didn't know him very well, so I wasn't sure what to make of it."
  • This song blends funk, rap, heavy metal and classical music. It is credited for laying the groundwork for the development of the nu metal genre.
  • The video was inspired by the Spanish artist, Salvador Dali. It ran constantly on MTV, and featured an exploding piano and a controversial image of a dying fish. The fish belonged to the Icelandic singer-songwriter, Björk, who was given it at a poetry recital in San Francisco. She later passed the fish on to Faith No More at a party at Bottum's house in Berkeley. Björk would never see the fish again... (thanks, Ryan - Raleigh, NC)
  • Faith No More guitarist, Jim Martin, was a close friend of Metallica bassist, Cliff Burton, who died when his band's tour bus overturned in Sweden in 1986. In the "Epic" video, Martin wears a t-shirt with the bassist's face on alongside the words "A Tribute to Cliff Burton."
  • This song has been covered by the Welsh rock band, The Automatic, the Swedish indie pop band, Love Is All and the Californian metal band, Atreyu, who included it on the bonus edition of their 2007 album, Lead Sails Paper Anchor. (thanks, Charlie - Las Vegas, NV)
