Walk on the Ocean Lyrics

We spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
Where are we going, so far away
And somebody told me that this is the place
Where everything's better, everything's safe

Walk on the Ocean
Step on the stones
Flesh becomes water
Wood becomes bone

And half an hour later we packed up our things
We said we'd send letters and all those little things
And they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
It seemed they'd already forgotten we'd came

Now we're back at the homestead
Where the air makes you choke
And people don't know you
And trust is a joke

We don't even have pictures
Just memories to hold
That grow sweeter each season
As we slowly grow old

Walk on the Ocean
  • Is the ocean a metaphor for heaven? Is the song about Jesus?

To answer these questions, we asked Toad the Wet Sprocket lead singer Glen Phillips , who writes their lyrics. He told us that the band's guitarist Todd Nichols had composed the music, so Glen bashed out a lyric for the demo in about five minutes. A few weeks earlier, he had taken a vacation with his wife to Orcas Island in Washington State, so he had images of cleansing water in his cortex. "I wrote down literally the first thing that came across my mind," he said. "The lyric and the chorus, I have no idea what it means, unfortunately. Then I tried rewriting it and nothing ever really worked. I tried to make the chorus mean something, and eventually said, 'Well, it sounds like I know what I'm talking about.' So we just left it as is. It was the least-conscious, least-crafted lyric."
  • The verses in this song tell a semblance of a story, but Phillips describes the chorus as "nonsense" (wood becomes bone?!).

He likens this songwriting style to Nirvana's where the song might not make much sense, but it makes you feel something.
  • Fear was Toad the Wet Sprocket's third album, and their breakthrough. Released in August 1991, the album picked up steam when radio stations started playing its second single, "All I Want." The anti-rape but often misinterpreted "Hold Her Down" was the next single, and that one flopped. "Walk on the Ocean" was then issued as the last single from the album, and it was a hit, reaching its peak chart position in January 1993.
  • Apparently, some people thought this was a Billy Joel song when they heard it. When Joel appeared on a Howard Stern town hall presentation in 2014, Stern asked the singer about it and said he was convinced it was one of Billy's songs when he heard it. Joel said he had never heard the song before.

    You Bet Your Life Lyrics

Just another hunter, like a wolf in the sun
Just another junkie on a scoring run
Just another victim of the things he has done
Just another day, in the life of a loaded gun

The odd get even, you name the game
The odds get even, the stakes are the same
    You Bet Your Life

Just another winner, pours his life down the drain
Just another island in a hurricane
Just another loser, like a cat in the rain
Just another day, in the path of a speeding train

The odds get even, you name the game
The odds get even, the stakes are the same
    You bet your life

    Armchair rocket scientist graffiti existentialist
    Deconstruction primitive performance photo-realist
    Be-bop or a one-drop or a hip-hop lite-pop-metallist
Gold adult contemporary urban country capitalist

Just another gypsy with a plastic guitar
Just another dancer with her eyes on the stars
Just another dreamer who was going too far
Just another drunk, at the wheel of a stolen car

The odds get even, you name the game
The odds get even, the stakes are the same
    You bet your life

  • In this song the delay is synched to the tempo. In the November, 1991 issue of Guitar Player magazine, Alex Lifeson explained: "I did it originally, then Stephen (the engineer) added a little bit more DDL to one of the other cleaner guitars to give it more energy. The song seemed quite same as we went through different sections - something was lacking. We wanted to get the first verse seesawing a little more. Edge, from U2, is a pro at that." Baby Baby Lyrics

    Baby Baby
  • Grant wrote this for her daughter Millie, who was six weeks old at the time.

We asked Amy in a 2013 interview what Millie - then 23 years old - thinks of the song. Amy replied: "I think she just says, 'This is the song inspired by me.'"

Grant added: "When they were younger, they traveled with me on the bus. I mean, as they got older, I had to take a tutor until they were old enough to not want to travel as much as I did. But I didn't ever force my children to have any kind of emotional attachment to the music I made, because I knew that they would find the music that they loved, and I didn't ever want them to feel pressured. I jokingly have said, 'Oh, I'm so glad I heard 'Baby, Baby' in an elevator the other day, because it's helping defray the cost of your college education.' [Laughing] But it's just like, 'Well, that's what Mom does.'"
  • Grant is a very popular singer in the world of Christian music, but this was her first big secular hit as a solo artist. She did have a #1 hit in the US with her duet with Peter Cetera on "The Next Time I Fall."
  • The Nashville producer and songwriter Keith Thomas wrote this with Grant. He worked on several of her songs, and also wrote hits for Whitney Houston, Vanessa Williams, Sophie B. Hawkins and James Ingram.
  • The video for this song raised suspicion among Grant's Contemporary Christian fans, as she sang it affectionately to an actor - not her husband (and father of Millie) Gary Chapman. Grant and Chapman, who married in 1982, divorced in 1999. A year later, Grant married the Country star Vince Gill .
  • The Swirling Eddies recorded this on their 1996 album Sacred Cows, which was comprised of comedic covers of Christian hits. When we asked Terry Taylor of the group in 2012 if he stood behind the album, he replied: "Yes, I stand way way way behind it! Look, I had a blast doing it, but no I wouldn't do another. One is enough! I know first hand that Amy Grant thought it was hilarious. On the other hand, I don't think that Degarmo and Key were too happy with the fact that they had the dubious honor of having not one but two songs covered by The Eddies."
  • To commemorate its 25th anniversary, Amy Grant remade the song in 2016, with additional vocals by her labelmate Tori Kelly. Producer Dave Garcia brought Kelly into the studio to record her take. He then merged her vocals with Grant's original for the updated version.

Grant told People: "Although I had not met Tori at that point, my 15-year-old daughter, Corrina, is a big fan of Tori's and so I was very aware of her incredible talent and was honored she would sing this song."

Kelly told ABC Radio: "I definitely wanted to stay true to the melody and, you know, how the original was made. But it wasn't hard to stick to it 'cause it made me realize just what a great song it always was, and it just felt so classic and timeless."

    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Give me the music
    Give me the music
    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Everybody dance now
    Yeah, yeah, yeah
    Everybody dance now

Here is the dome, back with the bass
The jam is live in effect and I don't waste time
On the mike with a dope rhyme
Jump to the rhythm jump jump to the rhythm jump
    And I'm here to combine
Beats and lyrics to make your shake your pants
Take a chance, come on and dance
Guys grab a girl, don't wait, make her twirl
It's your world and I'm just a squirrel
Trying to get a nut to move your butt
To the dance floor, so yo what's up
Hands in the air, come on say yeah,
Everybody over here everybody over there
The crowd is live and I pursue this groove
    Party people in the house
    Move (let your mind)
    Move (put me online)

    [Chorus]

    Come on let's sweat, baby
    Let the music take control
    Let the rhythm move you
    Sweat, sweat
    Let the music take control
    Let the rhythm move you
    Everybody dance now
    Da da da da
    Da da da da
Da da da da, da da da
Da da da da, da da da
    La da da da
    La da da da
    Dumb da dumb da dumb
    Everybody dance now

Pause take a breath and go for yours
On my command now hit the dance floor
It's gonna make you sweat till you bleed
    Is that dope enough, indeed
I paid the price, I control the dice
I'm more precise, to the point I'm nice
The music takes control, your heart and soul
Unfold, your body is free and a whole
    Dance till you can't, dance
Till you can't dance no more
Get on the floor and get raw
Then come back and upside down
Easy now, let me see ya
    Move (let your mind)
    Move (put me online)
    The music is my life
    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Everybody dance now
    Everybody

Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)
  • Martha Wash sang on this, providing the powerful line, "Everybody Dance Now!" She was a member of The Weather Girls ("It's Raining Men") and provided vocals for the group Black Box. She was overweight and not very photogenic, so she was replaced in the video by a slender singer/model named Zelma Davis, who lip-synched her lines. Wash's name didn't make the initial album credits either. After some legal wrangling, she was given proper credit for her contribution. In the credits in the video for the song, this line was included: "Additional vocals by Martha Wash, visualized by Zelma Davis."

This wasn't the first time Martha was whitewashed - she sang on three #1 Dance hits for the act Black Box, and was replaced in those videos by a model. Wash sued both the Black Box and C+C producers, reaching a settlement that included a record deal as a solo artist.
  • C+C Music Factory were the US production and remix duo David Cole and Robert Clivilles. This was their first single under the C+C name, but they already had made hits with the Cover Girls and Seduction. David Cole died of meningitis in 1995.
  • According to Robert Clivilles, Martha Wash was asked to join the group but refused because she wanted to focus on being an R&B singer. He says she was replaced by Zelma Davis in the video because Davis was the main female voice in the group (if not this song), appearing on eight songs on the album.
  • The second choice for the "Everybody Dance Now" hook line was Jocelyn Brown, who can be heard singing "I've got the power" on the "The Power ," a 1990 hit for Snap!

    Country Feedback Lyrics

    Country Feedback
  • If you listen closely to the lyrics at the end: "It's crazy what you could've had," it can sound like "It's crazy what you couldn't have." (Apparently Michael Stipe sometimes simply makes up or distorts lyrics, which he does to great effect here). The feeling of these final lyrics gives some indication of the sense of desolation that pervades this song in almost every lyric and chord. It's about repetition in life and love, about failed relationships: "We've been through fake breakdown, self hurt, self help." It's on a continuous "maddening" loop, "feedback," and no matter how much you analyze a bad relationship with the aim to improving things, you just repeat the same things endlessly. "Junk Garage" is imagery of something discarded and worthless. "This flower is scorched" is an image of love (flower, a traditional symbol of love) which has been sullied. There is also some sexual imagery of "Honey Pot" which is an alluring, sexual attraction but ultimately unwanted. The "Paper Weight" is holding down something flimsy, again emphasizing the lack of substance to the relationship. "Plastic" emphasizes the artificiality of the relationship. (thanks, Gus - London, England)
  • Michael Stipe told Q magazine in 1992: "It's a love song, but it's certainly from the uglier side. It's pretty much about having given up on a relationship."
  • Peter Buck recalled to the recording of this track in a 2008 Rolling Stone interview: "'Country Feedback' - I thought that was a demo. Michael (Stipe) just sang it once. It was a letter he wrote to someone but didn't send. He just sang it."
  • On R.E.M.'s 2001 Perfect Square concert DVD, Michael Stipe says, "this is my favorite song of all time." (thanks, Mike - Hamilton, ON)
  • In an interview with the August 2010 edition of Uncut magazine, Kurt Cobain widow and Hole vocalist Courtney Love claimed this is one of two songs that Stipe wrote about her. She said: "I know 'Country Feedback' and 'Crush With Eyeliner' are about me. The line from Country Feedback: 'We've been through fake-a-breakdown/ Self Hurt/Plastics, collections/ Self Help, self pain/ EST, psychics, f--k all,' Michael (Stipe) talked me through that."
  • In the liner notes for Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage, Bill Berry also calls this one of his favorite R.E.M. songs, adding "I think it wonderfully peculiar that this, somewhat gloomy dirge surfaced in a body of work that also included 'Shiny Happy People.'"
  • This was featured in the 1996 romantic drama Unhook the Stars, starring Marisa Tomei and Gena Rowlands.

All around that dull gray world
    From Moscow to Berlin
    People storm the barricades
    Walls go tumbling in

    The counter-revolution
    People smiling through their tears
Who can give them back their lives
    And all those wasted years?
    All those precious wasted years
    Who will pay?

All around that dull gray world
    Of ideology
    People storm the marketplace
    And buy up fantasy

    The counter-revolution
At the counter of a store
People buy the things they want
And borrow for a little more
    All those wasted years
    All those precious wasted years
    Who will pay?

Do we have to be forgiving at last?
    What else can we do?
Do we have to say goodbye to the past?
    Yes, I guess we do

All around this great big world
All the crap we had to take
    Bombs and basement fallout shelters
    All our lives at stake

    The bloody revolution
All the warheads in its wake
    All the fear and suffering
    All a big mistake
    All those wasted years
    All those precious wasted years
    Who will pay?

  • This song is about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the fall of communism in Germany, ending 40 years of dictatorial Communist rule. The song also address the fall of communism in Moscow (Russia) and details the waste of time that pasted before freedom was brought to these places, the joy of democracy and emotions of the times.
  • In the February 1994 issue of Modern Drummer, Neil Peart said he heard the drum pattern when he was in Togo: "I was laying on a rooftop one night and heard two drummers playing in the next valley, and the rhythm stuck in my head. When we started working on the song I realized that beat would complement it well."
  • Geddy Lee (from the RTB CD Launch radio broadcast): "It's that horrible and wonderful moment all mixed into one when somebody realizes that they've been, you know, had their freedom removed for so many years, and they finally get it back. It must be such a bittersweet moment. All those years.... all those lives that were lost and all the struggle, all the people that were fighting, all the years, and suddenly.... it's all over. And what do they do about all the people that did not survive, who were not lucky enough to be around when the wall fell down. It's an unanswerable question, but it's certainly one to think about."
  • Alex Lifeson (Guitar Player, November 1991): "Occasionally we do things that are slightly out just to give a particular character to the music. On "Heresy" I'm playing my acoustics in the chorus - especially the second chorus - to get a 12-string, Byrds kind of sound. We wanted to create the effect of a bunch of guys sitting around playing who aren't quite in tune. You can hear it in the acoustic - particularly the [Gibson] J-55, which has a Nashville tuning. Of course you're gonna get that kind of fluctuation anyway when you're playing high up the neck, because the strings are so light." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for all above)

My name, my name, my name is the Pasta
Now I like, I like I like to plug the real thing
So loose, so loose, so loose with the tap dance
The funk, the funk, funky funky stuff I bring
My tribe, my tribe, my tribe is known as Native Tongues
Consists, consists, consists of Jungle, Quest and others
Get played, get played, played a lot on radio
And also, and also, and also by some foul brothers
The Pease, the Pease the Pease Porridge never failed
It kept, it kept us calm, our stylin' merry
But late, but lately loonies acting real bold
Can't sip in luxury my apple cranberry
Girls watch, and watch, and watch I dance the big tut
Our home, our home our homeboys has to plan tricks
Don't real, don't real, don't realise the Native Tongue
Is rollin' strong and we're startin' in the megamix

Question, and that's if only I can ask this question
    Can I? (Yes you can!)
Why do people think just because we speak peace
    We can't blow no joints?
    (I-I-I don't know)

Mase, this is the ninth day I've reheated this porridge. You know it
    Keeps me peacefully, no?

Yeah, but my tolerance level has now peaked
And now it's time for some heads to get flown

We bring, we bring, we bring, we bring the peace of course
But pack a nine inside, inside my De La drawers
A picture, picture, picture, picture painted pink
Could turn to red, to red, to red in blooded quick
But in a single file my Native Tongue is calm
I'd rather, rather pass a brother a pound or palm
I kick, I kick, I kick a verse of unity
And shack, and shackle steps to the beat, beat
I click, I click the TV to the Simpsons
And sip the Porridge deep into my system
So mel, so mellow mode is my day mode
Inside the studio or on a road
The Shwing, the Shwingalo is the now step
It's murder if you bet cause you're life's jep
To praise, to praise the Soul is on a down drag
It's false, because I'll spray you with the Black Flag

Hey D, hey D, hey DJ set the record up
It's time, it's time, it's time to tame the naughty pups
Throw on the Touching Fingers serenade
So we can throw our lemonade
In their face and kick their little butts

People wanna get ragged with the reruns
Me not, me not, me not scared to trudge a bit
They can't, they can't, they can't get close to none
I tap, I tap, I tap a dance war skit
The por, the por, the Porridge got crazy cold
We won't, we won't eat until the heads are flown
Take advantage to a cool one's peaceful ways
But when, but when we fly that head all the people say

Here in Frogland, we always eat our Porridge, cause it keeps us frogs
    Real peaceful like

In my land, my people adore Porridge. And I don't understand why De La

And we are so peaceful, we sit by the camp fire and listen to our rituals, and

    Pease Porridge
  • This song is based around a deceptively jaunty sample of American whistling and bone-playing recording artist Brothers Bones' "Black Eyed Susan Brown." You may know Brother Bones from his recording of the standard "Sweet Georgia Brown," which became internationally famous after being adopted as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team in 1952.

Other samples in the song include James Browns' "Make It Funky," the Headhunters' "God Made Me Funky" and Harrell & Sharon Lucky's "Pease Porridge Hot" and "Finger Fun."
  • The lyric finds De La Soul pointing out that just because they are laid-back, it doesn't mean they'll let any one walk over them. Trugoy the Dove explained to Melody Maker: "That song's just saying that if people want to test us, we're not gonna stand for it. Just 'cos we spoke about being peaceful and positive, it doesn't mean we're gonna let ourselves be trampled on. We will do whatever it takes to defend ourselves. There have been situations where people tried to test us, and we defended ourselves, and whether it was worse for us or for them, it doesn't really matter."

Trugoy added that he's not talking about gangsta rappers but kids of different ages that the band met in clubs. "They'd come to see our show, so it wasn't to do with music, it was just them wanting to test us as so-called peaceful people." he said.

  • De La Soul's Posdnuos wrote this anti-crack narrative out of anger from his own older brothers' problems with drugs. The song is basically a true story but one detail is changed from real life: Unlike the track's subject, Posdnous' sibling went into rehab. He explained to Melody Maker: "Basehead is slang for someone who freebases or smokes crack. When he was basin', I had strong feelings about it."

"Some people might have thought it was too personal for them to write about, but I really didn't care," Posdnous added. "It helped get it off my chest, plus I thought a lot of people could identify with it and it could help people. Word by word, it's not following what actually happened, but it's close. It relates how we grew up together and how his downfall began."

I get up and I get down
I don't know how to take it
All the pain makes me scream and shout
I wonder if I'll make it
I love the feeling when the magic is just right
There's no revealing what is hidden in the night
Riding on a train that I can't control
No one else to blame and I can't let go
In the darkness I can feel
The things that makes me crazy
Hands of madness cold as steel
    I find it quite amazing
Never forsaking what a dreamer needs to know
Rules meant for breaking and the seeds I have to sow
Riding on a train that I can't control
No one else to blame and I can't let go
It's calling me, It's calling me
It's calling me, It's calling me
    I'm riding on a train that I can't control
See no evil, fear no fright
    Never lose the living
Keep the targets in your sight
    Know the cards you're dealing
Never forsaking what a dreamer needs to know
Rules meant for breaking and I gotta let, I gotta it go

    The Big Wheel Lyrics

Well, I was only a kid, didn't know enough to be afraid
Playing the game, but not the way the big boys played
Nothing to lose, maybe I had something to trade
The way The Big Wheel spins

Well, I was only a kid, on a holy crusade
I placed no trust in a faith that was ready-made
Take no chances on paradise delayed
So I do a slow fade

    Playing for time
Don't want to wait for heaven
    Looking for love
For an angel to forgive my sins
    Playing with fire
Chasing something new to believe in
    Looking for love
The way the big wheel spins

Well, I was only a kid, cruising around in a trance
Prisoner of fate, victim of circumstance
I was lined up for glory, but the tickets sold out in advance
The way the big wheel spins

Well, I was only a kid, gone without a backward glance
Going for broke, going for another chance
Hoping for heaven, hoping for a fine romance
If I do the right dance

Wheel goes round, landing on a twist of faith
Taking your chances you'll have the right answers
    When the final judgment begins

Wheel goes round, landing on a leap of fate
    Life redirected in ways unexpected
    Sometimes the odd number wins
The way the big wheel spins

    The Big Wheel
  • Neil Peart ("Roll The Bones Radio Special"): "The Big Wheel is a good example on this album; where it seems to be autobiographical, but it's really not. It's where I've looked for a universal of that tradeoff between innocence and experience, and that song certainly addresses that. Not in the circumstances of my own life so much, or if it is, it's not important that it be autobiographical, that's just by the by really. Very much I want to find universal things that others can relate to, and that's a thing that's part of everyone's life, so I think that's probably one reason why I'm drawn to it. And then so much of it is drawn from observing people around me too, so that becomes a factor in it too; how they responded to life, and how they take to it. How they adapt to that innocence and experience thing." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)

The Show Must Go On Lyrics

Empty spaces, what are we living for
Abandoned places, I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for
    Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore
    The Show Must Go On
The show must go on, yeah
    Inside my heart is breaking
    My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
    Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning (I'm learning learning learning)
    I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning (turning turning turning)
    Round the corner now
    Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free
    The show must go on
The show must go on, yeah yeah
Ooh, inside my heart is breaking
    My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

Yeah yeah, whoa wo oh oh

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairy tales of yesterday will grow but never die
    I can fly, my friends
The show must go on (go on, go on, go on) yeah yeah
The show must go on (go on, go on, go on)
I'll face it with a grin
    I'm never giving in
    On, with the show

Ooh, I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
    On with the show
    On with the show
The show, the show must go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on
Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on

    The Show Must Go On
  • Guitarist Brian May wrote this while lead singer Freddie Mercury was dying of AIDS. It was Mercury's last official album with Queen, and when it was released, very few people knew he had the disease.

The lyrics are about the need to press on and make the most out of life while you can still enjoy it. It is inevitably a comment on Mercury's worsening condition, and his attitude towards life - May noted his incredible courage in the Days of our Lives documentary. "He never moaned, he never said 'my life is s--t, this is terrible, I hate it,'" said May. "He had an incredible strength and peace."

The song's placing as the final track on Innuendo is notable, as it's likely that the band thought that this might be the last album Mercury would be healthy enough to perform on before his death. In the sessions, he made enough recordings to provide the band with material to release the posthumous 1995 album Made In Heaven.
  • This was used in the movie Moulin Rouge. It is performed in an operatic style by Jim Broadbent and Nicole Kidman in a scene that sets up the climax of the movie. (thanks, daphne - Saint John)
  • In a 2005 poll by digital TV channel Music Choice where 45,000 adults across Europe were asked which song they would like played at their funeral, this was the favorite. (thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
  • The video is mainly just clips of old Queen videos and a few live performances, but it is so cleverly edited and spliced together that it works as a video of it's own. (thanks, Mjn Seifer - England)
  • This song was performed in dramatic style in 1997 with Elton John on guest vocals with an Italian ballet trope. It would be John Deacon's last performance with the band, and last public appearance - he retired from music after the performance.

    The Spam Song Lyrics

    The Spam Song
  • Spam is a brand name of luncheon meat. It's name is a contraction of the words "spiced ham." Years later, the term "Spam" was used to describe junk e-mail.
  • This song first appeared on the the 25th episode of the TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus, which was titled, appropriately enough, "Spam." On the show, a group of Vikings attempt to sing this song while Eric Idle and Graham Chapman (in drag) are ordering breakfast from Terry Jones, who recites the menu on which almost everything contains some spam. Terry Jones silences the Vikings until the end of the sketch, until he gives in and they sing the full version. (thanks, Connor - Stonington, CT)
  • Assisting the group on background vocals were The Fred Tomlinson Singers. This group worked with Monty Python on several other songs as well.
  • The group was known more for their comedy than for their music. All of their movies, however, featured music written by members of the band. Members of the group were: Eric Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam.
  • There are only three different words in this song. In alphabetical order these are: Lovely, Spam, and Wonderful. (thanks, Jeff - Haltom City, TX, for all above)

    The Fire Inside Lyrics

    The Fire Inside
  • The Fire Inside reflects the search of a lost companion and the internal struggles the singer must deal with. It's about someone who goes out on the town looking for someone from the past that he loved dearly. He's in a state of rage because only he understands how much he needs this person. On his way through town he notices the phony lovers and lines, the weak, and the "dilettantes." During this visit in town, he notices how weak people really are - "Safe in the knowledge that they tried." All the people in the clubs and the discotheques are secretly looking to fall in love but they can't find it. He is the only one who realizes this and is quite critical of them. The trip sequence ends with the line, "On to the street, on to the next, Safe in the knowledge that they tried. Faking the smile, hiding the pain, never satisfied. The fire inside."
  • The last three stanzas are reflection of Seger's personal situation. He screams out that "Dreams die hard and we watch them erode but we cannot be denied the fire inside." In other words, although this is terrible fact of life, you always have the memories and the unexplained feelings that are kept raging inside, the fire inside. (thanks, James Lo Cascio - Mahwah, NJ, for above 2)
  • Seger doesn't have a set way of writing songs, and he writes on both guitar and piano. Very often, his rockers are written on guitar, but this one was written on piano. Perhaps it's a fire thing - he also wrote "The Fire Down Below" on piano.
  • Seger spent a lot of time refining the lyrics to this song. He explained to Music Connection in 1994: "I thought the second verse about the club scenes was a killer, and the last verse worked, but I started to realize that the original first verse of that song was not nearly as strong as the others. So I wracked my brain for a long time on that song. It's like you'll work and work and work, and then three weeks later, the answer will just pop into your head.

It's funny, I've learned to sometimes let my subconscious do the work. I mean you can beat your head against the wall and just come up with nothing. I've found that that's a good way to do it. You just have to be patient. You have to learn to put it aside and work on something else when you hit a brick wall."

I can read the writing on the wall
You pretend that nothing's changed at all
I've got just one thing to ask you if it's so
Just Take Your Memory With You when you go

So I won't have to think about
The lonely nights I'll be without
Someone to hold me when the cold wind blows
Take your memory with you when you go

I walk the floor and wonder what went wrong
I'll have to find a way to carry on
Why don't you leave before the heartache starts to show
Take your memory with you when you go

So I won't have to think about
The lonely nights I'll be without
Someone to hold me when the cold wind blows
    Take your memory with you

    Take Your Memory With You
  • Running a tidy 2:34, this early hit for Vince Gill finds the singer at the end of a relationship. He makes just one request of the girl who is leaving him: that she take her memory with her when she goes so he doesn't have to think about what he's lost during those cold, lonely nights.

The song is a throwback to the classic Bakersfield Country sound that Gill loves (his 2013 album Bakersfield is comprised of cover songs from this era). When we spoke with Vince in 2014 , he told us: "That was straight out of a Buck Owens shuffle song or Harlan Howard or Ray Price or any of those guys. I've recorded several others over the years and loved those."

    November Rain Lyrics

When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same

    Nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
    In the cold November Rain

We've been through this such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain, oo yeah
But love is always coming and love is always going
And no one's really sure who's lettin' go today
    Walking away

If we could take the time
To lay it on the line
    I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
    All mine
So if you want to love me
    Then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
    In the cold November rain

Do you need some time on your own
Do you need some time all alone
    Everybody needs some time
    On their own
Don't you know you need some time all alone

I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you

Sometimes I need some time on my
    Own
Sometimes I need some time all alone
    Everybody needs some time
    On their own
Don't you know you need some time all alone

    And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, oh yeah
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
    So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
    'Cause nothin' lasts forever
    Even cold November rain

Don't ya think that you need somebody
Don't ya think that you need someone
    Everybody needs somebody
    You're not the only one
    You're not the only one

Don't ya think that you need somebody

    November Rain
  • The lyrics and the video are based on a short story by Del James called Without You. The story is part of a collection called The Language Of Fear , which was brought back to market in 2008 after being out of print. The new version of the book contains an intro by Axl Rose, who wrote: "Del James has a personal knowledge of most of the situations he writes about, and has a love of the gutter from having been there." James contributed lyrics to two Guns N' Roses songs: "The Garden" and "Yesterdays," and has directed several music videos. (thanks, Dejaye - Wagga, Australia)
  • Written by Axl Rose, the original version of this song was 25-minutes long, and was edited down to 8:59. It is the longest ever Top 10 hit and contains the longest guitar solo in a Top 10 single.

Slash actually plays two guitar solos in the song. Rose put the song's lengthy gestation period down to opposition from Slash and Duff McKagan. (thanks, Joe - Boston, MA and Cole - Watertown, NY)
  • The video was directed by Andy Morahan, who had done the popular George Michael videos for "Father Figure" and "Faith," and worked with GnR on "Don't Cry" and "You Could Be Mine."

A huge production, the "November Rain" video cost over $1.5 million to make, but reaped rewards for the band, as it got a lot of play on MTV. It stars actress and model Stephanie Seymour, Axl Rose's girlfriend at the time. In the video, she and Axl get married with Slash serving as best man and the rest of the band in the front row. After the wedding, it starts raining and the next scene is Stephanie's funeral in the same church.
  • Slash (from Q magazine, July 2004): "We got into doing these huge production videos and by 'November Rain' it was too much, just too involved. At the end of the day it was a great video but that's when I started realizing that it was getting out of hand."
  • This won for best cinematography at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, where it also received a Video Vanguard award. Guns N' Roses performed this at the end of the show with Elton John on piano.
  • The albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were released simultaneously. This was a bold move, but the band was huge and the albums both sold very well. When they were released, Use Your Illusion II was the #1 album in the US, followed by Use Your Illusion I. The last time an artist had the top two albums at the same time was in 1974, when two Jim Croce albums held the top spots shortly after his death.
  • The album was released in September 1991, but this came out as a single in February 1992.
  • Shannon Hoon from the group Blind Melon sang backup. Hoon, who died of a drug overdose in 1995, grew up in Lafayette, Indiana near Axl Rose.
  • Matt Sorum replaced Steven Adler as GnR drummer in 1990. A former session drummer and bandmate of Tori Amos, his classical training helped bring a more classical sensibility to the band, which is best heard on this song. In our interview with Sorum , he explained that the drum pattern came together after they had been rehearsing the song, and Axl and Matt found themselves in the studio enjoying take-out from Greenblatt's Deli. Axl, a big Elton John fan, put on the song "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," which gave Matt an idea.

"I said, 'God, listen to the tom toms on that,'" Matt recalls. "And Axl goes, 'Yeah, that's cool. So epic.' I go, 'What if I use that sort of a phrase as pieces of the song, almost like a melody that would work into the song structure.'"

Discussing the orchestral elements in the song, Matt explained: "I worked on the arrangements for those songs, the way they broke down and the dynamics. The band wasn't really that dynamic when I joined. It was a rock band, like 'Go for it.' Just loud. 'When we're on, it's loud.' And I came from an orchestral upbringing and classical music - I was in wind ensemble. I sounded crazy to them: 'We need pianissimo instrumental right here and mezzo forte right here.' And they'd go, 'What?!?'

Pianissimo means 'quiet.' And here we're doing mezzo forte. That means 'medium loud.' Now, we're going to go double forte here, which means, Okay, go back to your regular volume. I would explain all these sections to the band, and I said, 'This needs to be a journey, you need to take people on a journey to this song.' So that's what we did on 'November Rain.'"
  • Axl Rose was working on this as early as 1983. Former L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns said: "When we were doing that EP for L.A. Guns, like in 1983, he was playing 'November Rain' on piano. Way back then. It was the only thing Axl knew how to play, but it was his. He'd go: 'Someday this song is gonna be really cool.' And I'd go: 'It's cool now. But it's not done, you know.' And like anytime we'd be at a hotel or anywhere there'd be a piano, he'd just kinda play that music. And I'd go: 'When are you gonna finish that already, you know?' And he'd go: 'I don't know what to do with it.'" (thanks, Rayan - Lincoln, England)
  • According to Matt Sorum, "November Rain," "Don't Cry" and "Estranged" were conceived as one song, and the three tracks form a trilogy of sorts. Sorum played the same drum fill throughout those three songs, and took some criticism for doing so - notably from former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

Sorum points out that this was intentional, a way of unifying the songs. "That was my part in tying enough songs together to make it one voice," he told us.
  • The outfit lead guitarist Slash is wearing in the music video for "November Rain" can be seen at the Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando, Florida. (thanks, Anthony - Mesquite, TX)
  • Slash revealed in his autobiography that an early 18-minute version of the song was recorded at a session with Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton in 1986, before the sessions for Appetite For Destruction began.
  • The guy who crashes through the wedding cake around the 7-minute mark of the video is Riki Rachtman, host of the MTV show Headbangers Ball. He and Axl Rose were friends.

    Release
  • This very cathartic song began as a droning riff guitarist Stone Gossard started playing. The rest of the band started forming the track, and Eddie Vedder walked up to the microphone and poured out the words that would make up most of the lyrics. It was a very emotional song for Vedder, who was thinking about the pain and loss he had been through: he found out as a teenager that the man he thought was his father was actually his stepfather, and his real father died before they could connect. Eddie realized that the song had a similar meaning for his bandmates, who were still dealing with the death of Andrew Wood, who was the lead singer in Gossard and Jeff Ament's band before they formed Pearl Jam. "Release" was one of the first songs Eddie wrote with the band, and it's one that helped them find common ground. "We were strangers, but we were coming from a similar place," said Vedder.
  • At first, this song was almost 10 minutes long, as Vedder did "release" a lot of words when he started singing it.

  • There is a lot of self-loathing going on in this song, as Kurt Cobain sings, "I'm so ugly" and takes the voice of a man on the brink of killing himself - dysfunctional, random, and all of that. Cobain made it clear that most of the time, he wasn't singing about himself in his songs, but was pulling from what he saw in other people. This depressive theme crept into some of the songs on their In Utero album as well, which at one point was going to be called "I Hate Myself And I Want To Die." At live shows, Cobain would sometimes put this in perspective, asking the audience, "Hey everybody, why so glum?"
  • Lithium is a drug used by doctors and psychiatrists to treat patients with manic-depressive disorder, also known as bipolar depression. This is a very volatile mental condition, and Lithium often helps regulate the mood of the patient. Mike Tyson is a famous lithium patient.
  • The CD single contained a sonogram photo of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love's unborn child, Frances Bean; Kurt said he thought he saw Frances doing the heavy metal devil horn hand gesture when he watched the sonogram. The single also included all the lyrics to the songs on the Nevermind album, so people could finally figure out what Kurt was singing in "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
  • The album was produced by Butch Vig . He also produced the Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream and is the drummer for the band Garbage.
  • Kurt Cobain collaborated with Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan in an informal blues band during 1990. One of the names they considered for the group was Lithium. (thanks, Adam - Dewsbury, England)
  • There was a group called Nirvana that was around from 1967-1972 and had modest success in Europe. That band got back together and sued Kurt Cobain's Nirvana in the early 1990s for taking their name. The suit was amiably resolved, and the other Nirvana released their version of "Lithium" on their 1996 album Orange And Blue. (thanks, Andrew - Cape Town, South Africa)
  • Cobain spent a period of his life moving between the homes of various relatives and friends. One of these friends came from a family of reformed Christians, and in this song Cobain compares living in this house to having bipolar depression.
  • Living Color guitarist Vernon Reid told Rolling Stone magazine: "My favorite song on Nevermind was 'Lithium.' Kurt Cobain tapped into something in the culture that nobody had given a voice to before: passionate ambivalence: 'I'm so ugly, but that's OK 'cause so are you.' He captured the idea of having incredibly powerful feelings about not having feelings." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Bruce Lash recorded a mellow lounge version that was used in the 2008 movie Marley & Me. Lash explains: "I recorded the song as part of an album I did called Prozak For Lovers II, in 2004. I did the first Prozak For Lovers in 1998. I was looking for songs that were hard or angry or alienated to make sort of loungy Bossa Novas out of. Calm them down. Make them soothing. 'Lithium' has such a beautiful melody, and I never realized how great the lyrics were until I started working on the Prozak version of it. it was a natural!
The thing about this kind of song treatment is that the lyrics really come to the front, and I find the result is especially pleasing when the lyrics are as good as they are in this song.

How did it get into Marley? The film's editor, Mark Livolsi, told me that he had put it in the cut fairly early on, and its placement was never questioned. I have no idea how he came across my recording of the song. I did, however, send him a fruit basket, as a thank you. :)" (Thanks to Bruce for filling us in. Prozak For Lovers II is available at CD Baby and on iTunes.)
  • Nirvana performed this at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards. It was quite an eventful evening for the band, as they wanted to play "Rape Me" but MTV wanted "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Cobain had to check out of rehab to attend the show, and had made comments disparaging MTV in the past. At rehearsals, a standoff ensued where MTV threatened to go nuclear, banning not just Nirvana, but other acts from their label if they didn't fall in line. "Lithium" was the compromise, but Nirvana made the network sweat, playing a few seconds of "Rape Me" before going into their agreed upon song. During the song, after a bit of network-sanctioned stage diving from the crowd, they smashed up their instruments, with Krist Novoselic getting hit in the head by his bass - a fairly common event at Nirvana finales. Kurt Cobain also had beef with Axl Rose at the show, and Kurt made sure to spit on Axl's keyboard after a backstage altercation.
  • The video was made up of footage of the band performing at the Reading Festival in England, where they were the headliners in 1992.

    The God That Failed Lyrics

    The God That Failed
  • This song is about how people seem to rely too much on religion to help with their problems. When James Hetfield's mother had cancer, she didn't take medication because she believed faith would heal her. Some time later, she died. (thanks, Joseph - LA, CA)
  • Producer Bob Rock told Musicradar.com : "The God That Failed is deep. It's not just a cheap shot at religion; it's him tackling the subject in a very complex manner. Emotionally, it's as real as 'Nothing Else Matters.'"
  • The Black Album was the first Metallica record produced by Rock, which meant he had to change some of the band's working practices, including that of guitarist Kirk Hammett on this song. He recalled to Musicradar.com: "Working with Kirk on this song was interesting – and this goes for the whole record, too: I was told that he'd come in the last few weeks of making a record to do his guitar solos. I told everybody right off, 'Well, that's not how we're going to do things. He's going to play live, like everybody else.'

At first, Kirk was very uncomfortable with this approach, but he was game and played what he thought were guide solos. In many cases, including this one, his first ideas were the ones that we'd go back to and use when doing overdubs. He learned how to be spontaneous."
