Overnight Lyrics

Overnight I walk these midnight streets alone
All the lights they try to pull me in
Oh and I should be sleeping
Oh but I can't close my eyes anymore
So wide awake again

And everybody says that I should just forget
The hardest part is over with
But it's so dark and I can't see the light
There will never be a heart that I could break
That I could find to take your place
There's nothing I can do

I can't get over you overnight
I can't get over you overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight

I watch the strangers pass me by
Every time their face looks just like you
Oh and I still remember you in my arms
When I would hold you
Back when the sun would always rise too soon

And everybody says that I should just forget
The hardest part is over with
But it's so dark and I can't see the light
And there will never be a heart that I could break
That I could find to take your place
There's nothing I can do
I can't get over you, overnight
I can't get over you, overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight
I can't get over you, overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight

I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
I should be sleeping
everybody says that I should just forget
The hardest part is over with
It's so dark and I can't see the light
And there will never be a heart that I could break
That I could find to take your place
There's nothing I can do
I can't get over you, overnight
I can't get over you, overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight
I can't get over you, overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight
I can't get over you, overnight
I should be sleeping, overnight
I walk these midnight streets alone

  • The title track of Parachute's third album finds Will Anderson singing about being unable to sleep because he's infatuated with a love interest. He declares desperately, "I can't get over you overnight," accompanied by a pounding kick drum. "'Overnight' is one of our favorite songs on the album," Anderson told Billboard magazine. "We feel it captures the essence of the whole record in one song, and enough so to make us name the whole album after it. It was easy to write, a lot of fun to record."

  • Mike Rosenberg is a British singer-songwriter and indie Pop/Folk/Rock singer who records under the moniker of Passenger. This is the opening track of his third album, All The Little Lights. Rosenberg explained to VH1: "It's a song about how difficult it is to remain positive and keep on pursuing what you love. You have to be grateful for what you have, and not always striving towards what's over there."

    All The Little Lights Lyrics

One went out at a bus-stop in Edinburgh
One went out in an English park
One went out in a night club, when I was fifteen
    Little lights in my heart

One went out when I lied to my mother
Said the cigarettes she found were not mine
    One went out within me
Now I smoke like a chimney
It's getting dark in this heart of mine
It's getting dark in this heart of mine

    We're born with millions
Of little lights shining in the dark
And they show us the way
One lights up, every time you feel love in your heart
One dies when it moves away

One went out in the back streets of Manchester
One went out in an airport in Spain
One went out, have no doubt
When I grew up and moved out
Of the place where the boy used to play

One went out when uncle Ben got his tumor
We used to fish and I fish no more
    Though we will not return
    I know one still burns
On a fishing boat of the New Jersey Shore
On a fishing boat of the New Jersey Shore

    We're born with millions
Of little lights shining in the dark
And they show us the way
One lights up every time we feel love in our hearts
One dies when it moves away

    We're born with millions
Of little lights shining in our hearts
And they die along the way
Till we're old and we're cold
And we're lying in the dark
'Cause they'll all burn out one day
They'll all burn out one day
Oh oh, they'll all burn out one day
They'll all burn out one day
    Yeah, no

    All The Little Lights
  • This is the title track of the third studio album by singer Mike Rosenberg who records under the moniker of Passenger. Born and bred in the United Kingdom, Rosenberg first took his act in October 2009 to Australia where he has earned a big following. All but one of the All The Little Lights tracks were recorded at Sydney's Linear Recording studio. He was joined by a core Australian band that included Boy & Bear drummer Tim Hart, jazz bassist Cameron Undy, and keyboards player Stu Hunter, from Katie Noonan & The Captains.
  • Passenger told VH1 that it is difficult to explain this song's meaning "without sounding a bit like a hippie." He added: "I think it's important with songwriting that you're honest, and you're vulnerable. There's a balance, because you don't want to specifically talk about yourself the whole time. You want to relate to people, and you want to give them the opportunity to put their own emotions into these songs — but every now and again, I like to put something specific and personal into them."

    Circles Lyrics

    It’s been years
    Since we carved our names
    On a clocktower door
    Before everything changed
    We were big eyed boys
With the salt on our skin
And we’d throw our kites to the wind

And they’d fly on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on
On and on and on and on

    It’s been years
    Since we whispered soft
    With the torch light on
    And the big light off
    We were tired boys
With the soap on our skin
And we'd fall asleep to the wind

And we’d dream on and on and on and on
On and on and on and on
On and on and on and on

    Cos we’re Circles
    We’re circles you see
We go round round the sun
In and out like the sea
    I’ll circle round you
    You will circle round me

    And in years
    When the torch light thins
    And the clock tower’s gone
    And the big light dims
    We’ll no longer be boys
We’ll have lines on our skin
And they’ll throw our dust to the wind

  • Mike Rosenberg (aka Passenger) wrote this song about his best friend. He explained to VH1: "We grew up together, we did everything together until we were about 16. I dropped out of school to become a musician, and he went to university. When we meet up, on one level, I know everything about him, but on another level, we're kind of like strangers because we've spent so little time together over the last 10 years."

Got a pinch of tobacco in my pocket
I’m not gonna roll it no I’m not gonna smoke it
'Till we’re staring at the stars and the rockets
    Twinkling in the silvery night

Two sips of whiskey in the flask but I’m not gonna drink them
I swear I’ll make it last
'Till we’re drinking out of the same glass again

And though the sand may be washed by the sea
And the old will be lost in the new
Well four will not wait for three
For three never waited for two
And though you will not wait for me
    I’ll wait for you

Got a Polaroid picture in my wallet
I’m not going to tear it no I’m not gonna spoil it
    It’s an unspoken heartbreak
A heartbroken handshake I’ll take with me where I go

And three words on the tip of my tongue
Not to be spoken nor sung
    Or whispered to anyone
'Till I scream them at the top of my lungs again

And though the sand may be washed by the sea
And the old will be lost in the new
Well four will not wait for three
For three never waited for two
And though you will not wait for me
    I’ll wait for you
    I’ll wait for you

    Holes Lyrics

I know a man with nothing in his hands, nothing but a rolling stone
He told me about when his house burnt down, he lost everything he owned
He lay asleep for six hole weeks, they were gonna ask his mother to choose
When he woke up with nothing he said I'll tell you something
When you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose
Now I've got a hole in my pocket, a hole in my shirt, a whole lot of trouble, he said
But now the money's gone, life carries on and I miss it like a hole in the head

I know a woman with kids around her ankles an a baby on her lap
She said one day her husband went to get a paper and the mother fucker never came back
Mortgage to pay and four kids to raise, keeping the wolf from the door
She said the wolf's just a puppy and the door's double locked so why you gottaworry me for
Now he left a hole in my heart a hole in a promise a hole on the side of my bed
Oh but now that he's gone well life carries on and I miss him like a hole in the head

Well sometimes you can't change and you can't choose
And sometimes it seems you gain less than you lose
Now we've got Holes in our hearts, yeah we've got holes in our lives
Well we've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on

Well we've got holes in our hearts, yeah we've got holes in our lives
Well we've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on
Said we've got holes in our hearts, yeah we've got holes in our lives
Well we've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on

Said we've got holes in our hearts, we've got holes in our lives
We've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on

We've got holes, we've got holes but we carry on

    Holes
  • This was released as the third single from British singer-songwriter Passenger's All the Little Lights album. He told VH1: "It's a really hopeful song, I think. Some of the album is pretty sad, pretty dark, and I think 'Holes' is a really nice song to put at the end of a concert to bring the mood up."
  • After the breakup of his band Passenger in 2009, Mike Rosenberg kept the group's name for himself and took to busking for a solo music career. This song's music video is a film of a busking session in his home town of Brighton, England.

    I Hate Lyrics

    I Hate
  • This is a recording of a live performance by Passenger (Mike Rosenberg) at The Borderline in London. He told VH1: "'I Hate' is one of those songs I wrote in a bad mood, about all the stuff that annoys me. But it's a lighthearted moment in an album that's quite heavy. I'm not depressed, I'm not a sad guy - I'm really quite happy most of the time, and I want to get that side of myself into the music as well."
  • Rosenberg takes digs at X-Factor, Facebook, fussy eaters and even festival toilets in this song, and even says that Cher's face "looks like it's been hit by a truck." According to the singer, he was just getting out his frustrations, referring to this vitriol as "just harmless piss-taking." Rosenberg was on a bus in Australia when he wrote it, and quite uncomfortable, as it was very hot and there were crying babies onboard.

    In The Flesh?
  • This is the first song of the album, and the first part of this song is music from the last song of the album, "Outside the Wall." At the end of that song, a man says "Isn't this where..." and and in the beginning of "In the Flesh" he says "...we came in?" This was one manifestation of Roger Waters' fascination with cycles.
  • There is another song named "In the Flesh" on the album, which has the same tune but relatively different lyrics. The first song concerns the protagonist Pink's birth, while the latter concerns Pink becoming a Nazi dictator after he suffers a schizophrenic break.

    Deal With The Devil
  • This was released as the second single from Pop Evil's third album, Onyx. It acted as the follow-up to their first #1 on the active rock radio chart, "Trenches."
  • Drummer Chachi Riot said about the song: "Life can be wonderful, but life can also be extremely merciless. How do we deal with these hard times? Who do we have to deal with? Our decisions have consequences."
  • The song's music video is part two of a three part video trilogy that revolves around addiction and abuse. It goes in reverse order, with "Trenches" being the final installment and the opening part featuring the song "Behind Closed Doors."

Directed by Johan Carlén, the trilogy follows a woman going through a transformation. In the "Deal With The Devil" clip, she shoots up heroin and is confronted by demons.

    Here Comes Your Man
  • This has been rumored to be about a drug deal, but in an interview with New Musical Express, Frank Black said the song was about hobos traveling by train and dying in a big earthquake in California. He started writing it when he was about 15 and was inspired by small earthquakes experienced growing up in California.
  • With much more pop appeal than most Pixes efforts, this became their most popular song, getting lots of airplay on college radio stations. The Pixies never seemed too concerned about popularity, however, and didn't bother promoting the song as a hit single.
  • The Pixies included this song on their first demo when they set out to get a record deal. Once they were signed, Frank Black had no intention of recording the song, and didn't until their third album, Doolittle. "People have been telling us to record it ever since so we finally did," he said.
  • In our 2015 interview with Frank Black , he called this song "Hobo film noir."
  • This became a concert favorite for the Pixies after they reunited in 2004 (they broke up in 1993), but when it first came out, Frank Black had no intention of playing it. "The poppiest song on Doolittle, which we couldn't even play live if we tried, is 'Here Comes Your Man,'" he told The Catalogue in 1989. "We would never play that song live; we're too far removed from it. It's too wimpy-poppy."
  • Joey Santiago played a 12-string Rickenbacker to get the jangly guitar sound on this track.

    Let Me Roll It
  • Many have interpreted this song as an olive branch offering to John Lennon after all the bitterness arising from his Beatles breakup song, "How Do You Sleep?." However, in an interview with Clash magazine in 2010 McCartney explained this was more of a drugs song. Said Macca: "'Let Me Roll It' wasn't to John, it was just in the style that we did with The Beatles that John was particularly known for. It was really actually the use of the echo. It was one of those: 'You're not going to use echo just cos John used it?' I don't think so. To tell you the truth, that was more [about] rolling a joint. That was the double meaning there: 'let me roll it to you.' That was more at the back of mind than anything else. 'Dear Friend,' that was very much 'let's be friends' to John."

    Rent
  • This ballad deals with a financially one-sided relationship sung from the perspective of a kept woman. Vocalist Neil Tennant told Mojo magazine August 2013: "I come from an era when people didn't talk about sex at home, where a lot of things were unsaid. So you sort of had to read between the lines, to the extent that one could even, oneself, not know what the songs were about. 'Rent's' funny - I was imagining a woman who was being kept by a politician, but when people would ask, what is the missing word between 'I love you' and 'you pay my rent?', I'd say 'I don't know, really.' The title came about because we used to like the idea of provocative titles. That was a punk thing."
  • The Pet Shop Boys dismissed this at the time as a "mercenary love song."
  • The video for the song was directed by Derek Jarman. It features two intercut storylines - one filmed in black and white and the other in color. The color part features Liverpool actress Margi Clarke (Letter to Brezhnev) as the partner of a wealthy man, who is played by Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath. Neil Tennant is their chauffeur.
  • The title implies the lot of a rent boy (a male prostitute), and despite Liza Minelli covering it in 1989, it wasn't until the sleeve notes to the reissue of Actually that Neil Tennant confirmed that this song was written from a female perspective.

Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town Lyrics

I seem to recognize your face
Haunting familiar yet I can't seem to place it
Cannot find the candle of thought to light your name
Lifetimes are catching up with me
All these changes taking place I wish I'd seen the place
But no one's ever taken me
Hearts and thoughts they fade fade away

I swear I recognize your breath
Memories like fingerprints are slowly raising
Me you wouldn't recall, for I'm not my former
It's hard when, your stuck upon the shelf
I changed by not changing at all, small town predicts my fate
Perhaps that's what no one wants to see
I just want to scream, hello
My god its been so long, never dreamed you'd return
But now here you are, and here I am
Hearts and thoughts they fade, away

Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, away
Hearts and thoughts they fade, fade away
    Hearts and thoughts they fade

Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town
  • This started out as a poem written by Eddie Vedder. It is about 2 people (possibly lovers) who are reunited after many years, one of whom stayed in the same town all her life, and the other who left.
  • In a 1993 interview with the radio show Rockline, Vedder explained that the unusual title came to his mind because he was "Fed up with one word titles."
  • In the Pearl Jam biography by Mick Wall, Vedder said of this song: "It's kind of about a lady, and she's getting on in years, and she's stuck in this small town. Small towns fascinate me: You either struggle like hell to get out, to some people want to stay 'cause then they're the big fish in the small pond, and then others just kind of get stuck there. So here she is working in this little place, and then an old flame comes in, and he's probably driving a nice car and looking kind of sharp - not a fancy car, but he's moved on. And then she sees him, and at first she doesn't even remember who he is, and then she realizes who it is. She's just too embarrassed to say 'hello.'"

    I Fall To Pieces
Each time I see you again

    But I haven't yet
You walk by and I fall to pieces

    I fall to pieces
Time only adds to the flame

    I Fall To Pieces
  • Written by Hank Cochran and Harlan Howard, this was arguably the first pure country single to cross over to the pop charts. It also established Patsy Cline's sophisticated weepy style.

Legendary songwriter Harlan Howard was the perfect talent to bring onboard for the writing of this song. Bill DeMail quoted Howard's explanation of his proclivity for complex love songs in his Performing Songwriter obituary. "The toughest songs in the world to write are love songs," he said. "'I love you and I will forever and blah blah blah.' I'd rather get into a song about a relationship that's a little bit shaky or even tragic. That in my mind represents country music and the drama of the man-woman thing." Howard, who passed away in 2002, wrote hit songs for performers as diverse as Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, and Patty Loveless.
  • According to Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs, "Cline was reluctant to record this ballad, which had been turned down by Brenda Lee, until producer Owen Bradley coaxed her into it. The sound was stone country but wrapped in elaborate pop, with Cline crying inside, like a nerve rubbed raw by heartbreak."

    The Obvious Child Lyrics

Well I'm accustomed to a smooth ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep through the night
    Some people say a lie's a lie's a lie
    But I say why
    Why deny The Obvious Child?
    Why deny the obvious child?

And in remembering a road sign
I am remembering a girl when I was young
And we said these songs are true
    These days are ours
    These tears are free
    And hey
The cross is in the ballpark
The cross is in the ballpark

We had a lot of fun
We had a lot of money
We had a little son and we thought we'd call him Sonny
Sonny gets married and moves away
Sonny has a baby and bills to pay
    Sonny gets sunnier
Day by day by day by day

I've been waking up at sunrise
I've been following the light across my room
I watch the night receive the room of my day
Some people say the sky is just the sky
    But I say
    Why deny the obvious child?
    Why deny the obvious child?

Sonny sits by the window and thinks to himself
How it's strange that some roots are like cages
    Sonny's yearbook from high school
    Is down on the shelf
And he idle thumbs through the pages
    Some have died
    Some have fled from themselves
Or struggled from here to get there
Sonny wanders beyond his interior walls
Runs his hands through his thinning brown hair
I'm accustomed to a smoother ride
Or maybe I'm a dog who's lost its bite
I don't expect to be treated like a fool no more
I don't expect to sleep the night
Some people say a lie is just a lie

    The Obvious Child
  • In this song, an intriguing phrase is repeated: "The cross is in the ballpark." When asked of its meaning, Simon answered, "The cross, the burden that we carry, is in the ballpark, it's doable."
  • Following the success of 1986's Graceland, on which he worked principally with South African musicians, Simon turned to Latin America for much of The Rhythm of the Saints. The drums for this song were recorded live at Pelourinho Square in the Brazilian city of Salvador. They were played by the Afro-Brazilian group Grupo Cultural Olodum, who are masters of the heavily percussive sub-style of samba called Batuque. Simon recalled to Mojo magazine July 2011: "One day we were driving through the old part of Salvador in Bahia when we heard this incredible drumming coming from Pelouinho Square. It was the group Olodum practising outside and (Simon's percussionist) Mazzola asked if we could record them. We did it in their back yard, just rented a couple of 8-tracks, and that was our backing-track for 'The Obvious Child.'"

    San Tropez Lyrics

As I reach for a peach
    Slide a rind down behind
    The sofa in San Tropez
    Breakin' a stick
With a brick on the sand
    Ridin' a wave
In the wake of an old sedan

    Sleepin' alone in the
    Drone of the darkness,
    Scratched by the sand that
    Fell from my love,
Deep in my dreams and I
    Still hear her callin'
    If you're alone
    I'll come home

    Backward and home-bound
    The pigeon, the dove
    Gone with the wind
And the rain, on an airplane
    Owning a home
    With no silver spoon
    I'm drinking champagne
    Like a good tycoon

    Sooner than wait for
    A break in the weather,
    I'll gather my far-flung
    Thoughts together
    Speeding away
On the wind to a new day
    And if you're alone
    I'll come home

And I pause for a while
    By a country style
And listen to the things they say
    Diggin' for gold
With a hoe in my hand
    Open a book
Take a look at the way things stand

    And you're leading me down
To the place by the sea
    I hear your soft voice
    Calling to me
    Making a date for
    Later by phone
    And if you're alone
    I'll come home

  • The album was loosely based on Pink Floyd's life around this time. The whole band went to the island San Tropez with their then-girlfriends and had a great peaceful time, hence the peaceful nature of this song and the title.

    Long Ride Home Lyrics

    Long black limousine
    Shiniest car I've ever seen
The back seat is nice and clean
She rides as quiet as a dream
Someone dug a hole six long feet in the ground
I said goodbye to you and I threw my roses down
Ain't nothing left at all in the end of being proud
With me riding in a race car, and you flying through the clouds

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
    On the Long Ride Home

One day I took your tiny hand
Put your finger in the wedding band
Your daddy gave a piece of land
We laid ourselves the best of plans
Forty years go by with someone laying in your bed
Forty years of things you wish you'd never said
How hard would it have been to say some kinder words instead
I wonder as I stare up at the sky turning red

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
    On the long ride home

    Headlights staring at the driveway
The house is dark as it can be
I go inside and all is silent
It seems as empty as the inside of me

I've had some time to think about you
And watch the sun sink like a stone
I've had some time to think about you
On the long, on the long
Oh the long, on the long
    On the long ride home

    Long Ride Home
  • Patty Griffin wrote this emotional song, which has become a big hit among her fans. It is very sad and ignites a great amount of emotion in the listener. The song is written from the view of someone who has just left a funeral, and throughout the song, discusses the long ride home that they have to take after having to bury their spouse of 40 years.
  • Throughout the song, it is never made clear if it is the man or woman singing the words. It sort of hints that it is from the man's perspective, but the ambiguousness of the song is also what makes it up for the listener's interpretation. The line "One day I took your tiny hand" also seems to make sense only from a man.
  • This appeared on Griffin's third album 1000 Kisses, which was released on Dave Matthews' record label. It was her first album to chart, reaching #101 in the US and earning Griffin accolades for her vocal range and songwriting skills.
  • "I bought a guitar in Nashville in 1995, was sitting in my former manager's kitchen and it came right out of my guitar," Griffin told Nu Country TV when referring to this song.
  • This song was the musical focus of the 2005 film Elizabethtown, which was directed by Cameron Crowe. In the film, the song is used to describe the return of the main character from Los Angeles to Kentucky. Crowe found the song from Dave Marsh, his friend who was a music writer for Rolling Stone and a big fan of Griffin's.
  • The Irish folk singer Maura O'Connell recorded this song on her 2006 album Walls and Windows.
  • 1000 Kisses features a variety of themes, but it does seem to concentrate on the stories of particular people and comes from a specific point of view. It features a song called "Chief," which she wrote about a Native American chief, and a popular cover of Bruce Springsteen's song "Stolen Car," originally featured on his album The River.

  • This song about mental illness led to questions asking if Gabriel was suffering from the condition himself. He told Mojo magazine September 2013: "I think the assumption was, you couldn't write about something like that unless you had experience of it."

Gabriel added: "I later discovered I had depression around the time of my marriage breaking up. But maybe there was something more there (long pause). Like actors in films, they say there is always something in a role that they need to work out. But mental illness was interesting to me."

  • On Her Majesty's Secret Service, released in 1969, was the only James Bond movie to star George Lazenby as 007. In spite of this, it is one of the more well-liked Bond movies. This song is an electronic remix of the main theme from that movie.
  • At the beginning of the song, several beeps can be heard. In Morse Code, these beeps become "OHMSS," an acronym for the song title.
