Games Without Frontiers Lyrics

Games Without Frontiers
Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane
Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again
Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt
Adolf builts a bonfire, Enrico plays with it
Whistling tunes we hid in the dunes by the seaside
Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill, they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Jeux sans frontieres

Andre has a red flag, Chiang Ching's is blue
They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu
Dressing up in costumes, playing silly games
Hiding out in tree-tops shouting out rude names
Whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside
Whistling tunes we piss on the goons in the jungle
It's a knockout
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-wars without tears
If looks could kill they probably will
In games without frontiers-war without tears
Games without frontiers-war without tears

Games Without Frontiers Song Chart
  • The lyric repeated at the beginning and end is "Jeux Sans Frontieres," which is French for "Games Without Frontiers."It is frequently misheard as "She's So Popular."
  • This song is about the childish antics of adults, which is especially prevalent when their countries are competing in the Olympics.
  • Gabriel wrote this before the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics in 1980. This reinforced the theme of adults acting like children over the Olympics.
  • Kate Bush sang backup - that's her singing "Jeux Sans Fronteires."
  • Gabriel got the idea for the title from a 1970s European game show of the same name where contestants dressed up in strange costumes to compete for prizes. A version of the show came out in England called "It's a knockout," giving him that lyric.
  • This was Gabriel's first UK Top 10 as a solo artist. It had an interesting impact on his American distribution: Gabriel's first two solo albums were distributed in America by Atlantic Records, but they rejected his third album (which contained this track), telling Gabriel he was committing "commercial suicide." Atlantic dropped him but tried to buy the album back when "Games Without Frontiers" took off in the UK and started getting airplay in the States. At this point, Gabriel wanted nothing to do with Atlantic and let Mercury Records distribute the album in America.
  • The whistling is Gabriel along with producers Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham.
  • In 1991, Gabriel's performance of this from Holland was beamed to Wembley Stadium in England as part of "The Simple Truth" concert for Kurdish refugees.
  • The video includes film clips of Olympic events and scenes from the 1950 educational film Duck and Cover, which used a cartoon turtle to instruct school kids on what to do in case of nuclear attack. (thanks, Patrick - Conyers, GA)
  • Part of the song goes: "Andre has a red flag/ Chiang Ching's is blue/They all have hills to fly them on except for Lin Tai Yu.

Andre could refer to Andre Malraux (1901-1976) the French statesman and author of the book Man's Fate, about the 1920s communist regime in Shanghai. Red flag may refer to Malraux's leftist politics. Chiang Ching could refer to Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) Chinese leader of the Kuomintang who opposed the Communists - hence, the rightwing Blue Flag. Chiang's forces lost the civil war in 1949 and fled to Taiwan, where they set up a government in exile.

Lin Tai Yu may be Nguyen Thieu (1923-2001), South Vietnamese president during the height of the Vietnam War. After the Communist victory of 1975, Thieu fled to Taiwan, England, and later to the United States where he died in exile.

The lyric could refer to the fact that while leftist politicians like Andre Malraux had a secure position in France, and rightist leaders like Chiang Kai Shek had a secure country in Taiwan, those caught in the middle like Nguyen Thieu were pawns in the Cold war and had no secure country. This could also be a reproach to either Thieu or his United States backers, saying that he was now a nobody.
  • A remix by Lord Jamar was used for the theme for the 2009 Winter X Games. The new version was dubbed "X Games Without Frontiers." (thanks, Justin - Durango, CO)
  • The singer recorded a German-language version of Peter Gabriel titled Ein deutsches Album. Hearing Gabriel singing about Adolf building the bonfire in German on this song makes it sound a lot more sinister.

    Time Lyrics

Well, the streets are empty where we used to run
And the cars are all on fire
Yeah, we fall like leaves in the garden of Eden, Eden

Now remember how it felt being in the sun
When I heard the ancient choir
And the dead of night like an angel singing, singing

    Time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time to take me home

On a tree in the garden I carved your name,
    An word is spelled desire
Like an ocean deep with the waters even, even

And your love pours down like a waterfall
And I can't escape the tide
Here's my hand, baby take it or leave it, leave it

    Time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time to take me home-ooh oooh oooh oooh oooh

Now we're too young to recognize
    Nothing stays the same
Promise I won't be the one to blame

'Cause time doesn't love you anymore
But I-I-I I'm still knocking at your door
Honey, we can run forever, if forever's what's in store
Oh, time doesn't love you like I love you
So take me home-ooh oooh oooh oooh oooh
Let me hear you say, let me hear you say

  • This is the title track of Mikky Ekko's debut album. It was also the last song he recorded for the project. "('Time') really represents a lot of what I went through to get this album done," Ekko told Billboard magazine. "And time is money. It's so valuable to not waste a second doing something that I don't love. That for me is just priceless."
  • Mikky Ekko wrote this with English producer Fraser T Smith, who has collaborated on such songs as Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" and Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart."

Ekko told UK newspaper The Sun: "Ironically 'Time' was the last song to make the album. Fraser and I went to the countryside. We both wanted to get away from the city and write a classic-feeling song. I'm a sucker for love songs so I pulled us in that direction. We finished writing after a healthy glass or two of tequila and I knew 'Time' was going to be the title."

    Dirty Laundry Lyrics

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
    They love Dirty Laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
    Give us dirty laundry

    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em when they're down
    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em when they're down
    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em when they're down
    Kick 'em when they're up
    Kick 'em all around

    We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blond
    Who comes on at five
She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
    It's interesting when people die
    Give us dirty laundry

    Can we film the operation?
    Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set!
    We need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
    Just leave well enough alone
    Eat your dirty laundry

    Dirty Laundry Song Chart
  • This song is about unscrupulous newspeople doing anything for a story. Henley values his privacy, and hates it when reporters pry into his personal life. He had to deal with increased press attention when his girlfriend, Maren Jensen, came down with Epstein-Barr Syndrome. She recovered, but they broke up soon after.
  • Danny Kortchmar, who played on definitive albums by James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt and Jackson Browne, wrote this song with Henley. Kortchmar (sometimes listed on the credits with his nickname "Kootch") is a key contributor to Henley's solo work. In our interview with Kortchmar , he explained that Henley had the title and the idea for the lyrics, and the track came together when Danny came up with a riff on his Farfisa organ. Said Kortchmar: "One night I set it up, ran it into an Echoplex and started banging out that part that you hear on the record. I was up into the wee hours banging away on this thing. That's when I recorded it, and when I played it for Don the next day, I said, 'I think this is 'Dirty Laundry.'' He said, 'Yeah, that's it. Record it and let's go.'"
  • There are some very interesting guitar contributions on this song: Danny Kortchmar played the basic parts, Joe Walsh did the first guitar solo, and Steve Lukather did the second solo. According to Lukather, who is a member of the band Toto, he did his solo in one take and it's one of his favorites.
  • In November of 1980, Henley was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor and possession of marijuana, cocaine, and Quaaludes after paramedics treated a 16-year-old girl suffering from drug intoxication at his Los Angeles home. This incident was a big influence on the song. (thanks, Stevie Lee - WSFR, Louisville)
  • The lyrics make fun of news anchors who are more concerned with their looks than accurately reporting the news. Many local news stations have at least one "bubble headed bleach blond." The folks who work behind the scenes in local news are usually well aware of the superficial and vapid product they create, and many stations have used this song on their TV station blooper reels. Before YouTube, these local news bloopers lived on tapes tucked away in the dark corners of newsrooms.
  • This was Henley's first Top 40 hit as a solo artist, but it wasn't his first single. "Johnny Can't Read," which peaked at #42, was released first.
  • Henley didn't tour to support the I Can't Stand Still album. He went right to work on his second solo album, Building The Perfect Beast.

    Run Lyrics

You look like you just got off of work
And if I may assume, babe
You work hard but you don't get what you're worth
    Am I right?
    Let me take another guess
You're a little stressed and I bet your feet hurt
No I don't read minds, babe
I just know what it looks like
When a woman works all night tryna get her thing right

    Don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

Bartender, let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    Don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

See I was thinkin', over in the corner while I was drinkin'
See you've probably been lookin' for way more out a weekend
Than freakin' and watchin' the Sun fly so high
But you feel so nasty and don't know why
You tried all the things that you weren't gon' try
Like kiss body parts if it wasn't on a guy
But your girl's in the bed and it wasn't undivided
And wasn't no ambition, and everybody wishin'
We'd have did this shit way back then, why we didn't?
Even if you went too far, it's forgiven
You were high when you did it, everybody was trippin'
Promised you'd forget it, but everybody didn't
You're like, this ass doesn't land in the air, body mitten
And I don't just be lookin' on everybody's kitten
But you get in the room and my dick in the room
Make your forget about all the chicks in the room, like that

Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    I don't know where you've been
And I don't know what you've been through
    But something's tellin' me you
You deserve a drink or two

Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
Wish I could take you somewhere, my bride
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
Get all in your mind and see what's inside it
    Ain't gon' lie to you
I want you, how could I not with a booty so fat?
I don't wanna get on your nerves and test your patience
I ain't tryna do that, no
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
I would love the opportunity to rub your feet
Ain't gon' lie to you, baby
If you with it, I got somebody sexy you should meet
    Ain't gon' lie to you
You had a long night, I'm just tryna help you end it right
So if I may be so bold, can I get you one more to go?

Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)
Let me get one more for the lady
Let me get one more for the lady
    (Whatever she wants)

    Don't know where you've been

  • This track finds Ne-Yo crooning about the predatory nature of the opposite sex. "It's a song that's kinda talking about that chick who takes pride in breaking up relationships," Ne-Yo explained to The Boombox . "She's walking, talking, living, breathing temptation."
  • Frequent Kendrick Lamar collaborator Schoolboy Q spits some rhymes. "The reason that Schoolboy Q is on ['Run'] is 'cause I'm a huge fan of Schoolboy Q and I knew that I wanted to do something with him," Ne-Yo explained. "I just had to figure out what song was gonna make the most sense. The song is kinda dark and he has that kinda thing to his voice."
  • Several of the tracks on Non Fiction, including this one, were inspired by true tales told to Ne-Yo by fans. He told Digital Spy the story behind this song:

"This guy wrote in via Twitter telling me about a very predatorial type of woman. He wrote and I quote: 'She just took absolute joy in destroying my relationship'. Basically talking about this woman that he met who seduced him into doing what it is that she wanted and using the fact that he did what she wanted to destroy his current relationship."

"It's a tragic story but I just thought that that would make for a really cool song. So I wrote a song that basically turned into a public service announcement for the fellas out there, like: 'Should you run into this type of woman, run for your life!'"

    Your Song Lyrics

It's a little bit funny this feeling inside
I'm not one of those who can easily hide I
Don't have much money but boy if I did
I'd buy a big house where we both could live
If I was a sculptor but then again no
Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show
Oh I know it's not much but it's the best I can do
    My gift is my song
    And this one's for you

And you can tell everybody this is Your Song
It may be quite simple but now that it's done
    I hope you don't mind
    I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world

I sat on the roof and kicked off the moss
Well a few of the verses well they've got me quite cross
But the sun's been quite kind
    While I wrote this song
It's for people like you that
    Keep it turned on

    So excuse me forgetting
    But these things I do
    You see I've forgotten
If they're green or they're blue
Anyway the thing is what I really mean
Yours are the sweetest eyes I've ever seen

And you can tell everybody this is your song
It may be quite simple but
    Now that it's done
    I hope you don't mind
    I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words
How wonderful life is while you're in the world
    I hope you don't mind

    Your Song Song Chart
  • This was Elton's first single to chart. Before he hit it big, he worked as a songwriter and studio musician, and for a time was the warm-up act for Three Dog Night, who recorded this song on their 1970 album It Ain't Easy (they had previously recorded Elton's "Lady Samantha"). When it looked like Elton might finally make it in the States with his own version of "Your Song," Three Dog Night chose not to release it as a single in an effort to give this young upstart a chance to make it on his own.

Elton's version was released on his second album, but the single did not come out until 7 months later, when it was released to promote his tour. Elton released his third album, Tumbleweed Connection, before the single came out, and by this time he was established enough to have his own hit. (Thanks to Kent Kotal at the Forgotten Hits newsletter.)
  • This was one of the first songs John wrote with Bernie Taupin. They met after a record company gave John some of Taupin's lyrics to work with. Eventually, they both moved into John's parents' house, where they started working together.
  • The song was written in 1967, when Bernie Taupin was 17 ("hence the extraordinarily virginal sentiments," he has said). Elton has said that this song is not about anyone in particular, so Taupin has refused to reveal the identity of the person - if such person exists - who inspired this song. He explained in a 1989 interview with Music Connection: "It's like the perennial ballad 'Your Song,' which has got to be one of the most naïve and childish lyrics in the entire repertoire of music, but I think the reason it still stands up is because it was real at the time. That was exactly what I was feeling. I was 17 years old and it was coming from someone whose outlook on love or experience with love was totally new and naïve.

Now I could never write that song again or emulate it because the songs I write now that talk about love coming from people my age usually deal with broken marriages and where the children go. You have to write from where you are at a particular point in time, and 'Your Song' is exactly where I was coming from back then."
  • Bernie Taupin wrote the words for this song over breakfast at Elton's parents' house, where he was staying. The original lyrics have coffee stains on them.

"The original lyric was written very rapidly on the kitchen table of Elton's mother's apartment in Northwood Hills in the suburbs of London, if I recall, on a particularly grubby piece of exercise paper," said Taupin.
  • Elton wrote the music in about 20 minutes, as he often did with Taupin's lyrics in their early days.
  • This helped alter the music landscape in the early '70s. After it came out, singer/songwriters like James Taylor and Carole King had a lot of success with heartfelt songs featuring a prominent vocal and a soft piano or guitar.
  • Regarding the place of this song in the Taupin/John canon, Bernie Taupin said: "This one is the one I recall like it was yesterday. The rest of them I'm a little shaky on. In retrospect, and I've said it on several occasions, I see this song as a bookend and its counterpart would be a song like 'Sacrifice.' 'Your Song' being a song about absolute naiveté in love while 'Sacrifice' is the complete opposite, the story of someone who's seen and done it all, as far as love's concerned, and come out the other end scarred but realistic about certain aspects of the real world."
  • This attracted the attention of some heavy hitters in the music industry. Arranger Paul Buckmaster and producer Gus Dudgeon both signed on to work with Elton after hearing this. They played a big part in crafting his songs over the next several years.
  • Elton appeared on US TV for the first time performing this on The Andy Williams Show. He was shy and dressed very plain, which changed a few years later when he became known for his outrageous costumes and flamboyant personality.
  • Elton's 1975 song "We All Fall In Love Sometimes" is about the writing of this song.
  • After hearing this, John Lennon said Elton was "The first new thing that's happened since we (The Beatles) happened." They ended up becoming good friends.
  • Both Elton John and Bernie Taupin agree that this is one of their best efforts. Said Taupin: "I think 'Your Song' is a gem. Our classic, I'm not sure. I'll let others decide that. But it's like an old friend, it means so many things on equally as many levels. It's certainly proved its worth, and I've heard it sung a million times. It's like a good dog, it's always there."

Elton performs this at all his concerts. He once said of this song: "I don't think I've written a love song as good since." He has called it "A perfect song," and says that the older he gets, the more the lyrics resonate with him.
  • This was originally released as the B-side of "Take Me To The Pilot."
  • In 1987, John released a live version as a single from his album Live In Australia. It didn't chart, but the next single from the album, "Candle In The Wind," did.
  • Billy Joel performed this with Elton at the 2001 "Concert For New York" to benefit victims of the World Trade Center attacks. It was not included on the CD of the show.
  • This was used in the movie Welcome Home, and also in a commercial for Rimmel Cosmetics.
  • This played a major role in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. It is sung by Ewan McGregor when he presents it as a poem to Nicole Kidman.
  • This was featured in an episode of The Simpsons when Apu gave his wife a present every day of the week leading up to Valentine's Day. This made Homer and the other men of Springfield very upset, and when they heard that Elton John was coming to town, they kidnapped him, thinking he (Elton) was there for Apu. Elton performed this song at the end of the episode with the lyric "This one's from Apu" in place of "This one's for you." (thanks, Patrick - Tallapoosa, GA)
  • Elton performed this at the "Concert For Diana" on July 1, 2007. It was the first song in the program. (thanks, Donovan Berry - El Dorado, AR)
  • Elton re-recorded the song with Italian tenor Alessandro Safina for the Sports Relief charity in 2002. This new version reached #4 in the UK singles chart, out-peaking its original chart position of #7.
  • Elton claims that he doesn't ask Bernie Taupin what his lyrics are about. He told Rolling Stone: "I always thought 'Your Song' was written about one of his girlfriends, and when I asked him that, he just said, 'No it wasn't!' He gets fairly defensive."
  • Elton John had played keyboards on several of the Hollies' tracks, including their hit song "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," and the English band had hoped to record this song themselves. "We knew Reg because he was a staff writer with a music publisher we used. He was writing songs well before he became famous," recalled their guitarist/vocalist Tony Hicks to The Daily Mail June 15, 2013. "One was 'Your Song.' I thought it would be a good one for the Hollies, and asked the publisher for permission to record it. He told me Elton had recorded it himself and it was due to be released in the US. He said, 'But it probably won't happen for him, so wait until it's all over.'"

At that time Elton had yet to break into the charts. "Well, it did happen - 'Your Song' became Elton's first big hit," added Hicks, "and one that's unfailingly identified with him. But it so easily could have been Our Song."

    Falling Apart Lyrics

I'll follow you out of the dark.
I tried my way but I keep Falling Apart!

All that I see, is the wickedness around me.
I refuse to believe, the apocalypse inside of me.
    I can't even trust myself.
    I'm burning in my skin.
Standing at the gates of hell, but nobody will let me in.

I'll follow you out of the dark.
I tried my way but I keep falling apart!
I'll follow you, with all of my heart.
I'm tired of my ways cause I keep falling and falling apart!

I stand here again, forsaken in a place
That feels like I can never win.
I'm reaching for a saving grace.
I can't even trust no one.
    I need to rise above.
I don't think I'm good enough, to feel your perfect love.

I'll follow you out of the dark!
I tried my way but I keep falling apart!
I'll follow you, with all of my heart!
I'm tired of my ways cause I keep falling and falling apart!
    I'm falling and falling apart.
    I'm falling and falling apart.
    I'm falling apart.

Your love's a fire, it's alive and I'm burning in it.
I'm in the ashes of mercy; I'm caught in it.
I fall hard and you carry me away.
I fall part so you can set me free.
Your love's a fire, it's alive and I'm burning in it.
I'm in the ashes of mercy; I'm caught in it.
I fall hard and you carry me.
I fall apart so you can set me free.
I follow you out of the dark!
I tried my way but I keep falling apart!
I'll follow you with all of my heart!
I'm tired of my ways, cause I keep falling and falling apart!
    I'm falling and falling apart!
    Without you I'm falling apart!
    I'm falling and falling apart.

  • Jacoby Shaddix calls this song a "Callout to God." In our interview with the Papa Roach frontman , he explained that it's a very spiritual song, and that "God" is simply his name for a higher power. "I see God in music, I see God in people, I see it out here in the world now, so I'm seeing the world from a different perspective," he said. "I'm not trying to be preachy or anything like that, just talking about my experience, my strength and my hope."
  • Bassist Tobin Esperance explained the song's meaning. "I love the lyrics on it," he said. "It's about trying to find something to hold on to that can keep you strong, propel you forward, and be that light in your life. There's a lot of evil s--t that can take over, but you don't have to fall prey to it."
  • Jacoby Shaddix went through a very rough time in 2012 when the band was recording their previous album, The Connection. Working through alcoholism and a separation from his wife at this time inspired this song, which he says is about "learning how to let people love me."

    Night Moves Lyrics

I was a little too tall, could've used a few pounds
    Tight pants points hardly reknown
She was a black-haired beauty with big dark eyes
And points all her own sitting way up high
    Way up firm and high

Out past the cornfields where the woods got heavy
Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy
Workin' on mysteries without any clues
    Workin' on our Night Moves
Trying' to make some front page drive-in news
    Workin' on our night moves
    In the summertime
    In the sweet summertime

We weren't in love, oh no, far from it
We weren't searching for some pie in the sky summit
We were just young and restless and bored
    Living by the sword
And we'd steal away every chance we could
To the backroom, the alley, the trusty woods
I used her she used me, but neither one cared
    We were getting our share

    Workin' on our night moves
Trying to lose the awkward teenage blues
    Workin' on out night moves
    And it was summertime
    Sweet summertime, summertime

    And oh, the wonder
    Felt the lightning
Yeah, and we waited on the thunder
    Waited on the thunder

I woke last night to the sound of thunder
How far-off, I sat and wondered
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain't it funny how the night moves?
When you just don't seem to have as much to lose
    Strange how the night moves
    With autumn closing in

    Hmm, night moves
    (Night moves) night moves
    (Night moves) yeah
    (Night moves) night moves
(Night moves) I remember the night moves
(Night moves) ain't it funny how you remember?
(Night moves) funny how you remember
(Night moves) I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember
    (Night moves) oh
    (Night moves) move away
(Night moves) we're gonna practice, love
    (Night moves) night moves
    (Night moves) oh, I remember
(Night moves) yeah, yeah, yeah, I remember
    (Night moves) oh, I remember
    (Night moves) god, I remember
    (Night moves) lord, I remember

Oh, woman, oh, yeah, yeah, uh-huh, I remember, I remember

  • This song is about a young couple losing their virginity in a Chevy. Seger says the song is autobiographical, but he took some liberties, as their tryst was after high school. The girl he was with had a boyfriend away in the military, and when he came back, she married him, breaking Seger's heart. Seger says the song represents the freedom and possibility of the high school years.
  • Seger was inspired by the movie American Graffiti. He says, "I came out of the theater thinking, Hey, I've a story to tell too. Nobody has ever told about how it was to grow up in my neck of the woods." (thanks, Christine - Chicago, IL)
  • This was recorded in Toronto. Seger's guitarist and sax player had returned to Detroit, so he completed this by bringing in a local guitar player and pianist, as well as some female backup singers from Montreal who happened to be in town. Along with "Turn The Page," it was one of just two songs Seger ever wrote on the road.
  • This song helped the Night Moves album sell more than five million copies. Seger was big in his home state of Michigan, but "Night Moves" earned him acclaim on a national level.
  • Seger: "When people ask 'Do you know when you've written a hit?' the usual answer is no. This song was an exception."
  • Like many of Seger's songs, there is a touch of nostalgia in the lyrics. When he sings, "And it was summertime, sweet summertime, summertime," he's not only referring to the time of the year, but to that season of his life as well. In the last verse of the song, when he is reminiscing, he says, "With autumn closing in" and is referring to the autumn of his life, getting older. (thanks, Kara - Raleigh, NC)
  • Rolling Stone magazine named this Single of the Year for 1977.
  • The tempo changes were inspired by Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland." Seger wrote the song in pieces; he had the first two verses written but was having trouble finishing the song. After hearing "Jungleland," he realized he could connect the song with two distinct bridges.
  • When Seger sings the line about how he dressed in high school, "Tight pants, points, hardly renowned," "Points" refers to small metal objects some teenagers wore on their shoes in the '60s.
  • Seger had a hard time finishing the lyrics to this song. Under pressure from his record company to release an album, he put out Live Bullet in 1976, which bought him time to finish this and include it on the album of the same name.
  • According to Seger, he and the girl really made it in the backseat of a '62 Chevy, but it didn't fit lyrically, so he changed the line to "My '60 Chevy." (thanks, Darrin - Hilo, HI)
  • "Night Moves" is also the name of a 1975 movie starring Gene Hackman. (thanks, Bailey - Port Huron, MI)
  • Since this is such a personal song, it has garnered few covers, although Garth Brooks and The Killers have performed it live.
  • Seger revealed in a radio interview that in the line, "Started humming a song from 1962," the song he had in mind was "Be My Baby" by the Ronettes (which was actually released in 1963).
  • Seger credits the Kris Kristofferson-written song "Me And Bobby McGee" for inspiring the narrative songwriting style he employed on this track.

  • T-Pain dedicated this acoustic number to his late grandmother, who he affectionately called Grandma Gladys. "This subject touched my heart," he said in the video. "This song is not only for my grandmother, but also for anybody that's lost anybody. I hope this song makes you feel better. It's okay to smile."

  • This song contains a reference to Springsteen's difficulties in extracting himself from his his contract with his manager Mike Appel - hence the title. Appel could be the man with a cigar mentioned in the lyrics. (thanks, Graham - Australia)
  • This does not appear on an album - It was released as the B-side of "Hungry Heart." This started a tradition of Springsteen using non-album tracks for B-sides.
  • Small wonder that this was a non-album cut; it's only one minute and fifteen seconds long. The studio version has never - repeat never - been released in CD form, so that's why there's so many live versions of it on YouTube and no original.

While we're on live performances on YouTube, another band known as "Miami & The Groovers" are out there with a medley of this song together with the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated." It's alarming how well they go together.
  • In the 2012 elections, Springsteen, a staunch Democrat all his life, put a mighty effort into free publicity concerts around the United States in support of the campaign to re-elect US president Barack Obama. Former president (and fellow Democrat) Bill Clinton even came along with Bruce to stump for Obama as well.

In the aforementioned rally tour, Springsteen told a Seattle Times interviewer: "For 30 years, I've been writing about the divide between the American dream and the American reality." Come to think of it, that does summarize his work quite well.
  • In the beginning minutes of the 1994 film Pulp Fiction, two criminal characters discuss a method used to hold up a bank without a gun, by robbing a bank with a telephone which supposedly had a hostage held remotely. Just for example.

    Handsome Lyrics

Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God
Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God
Oh, eat me up for breakfast
You think you look good in whatever they sugar coat you in
And my body is a temple, you can worship at my feet
But I might kick you in the teeth so
So even when you're spitting blood
You would savor that for me

'Cause I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm Handsome, so handsome

    I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know I should be pickin' up the pieces
But it doesn't really matter, it's what you thought it were
When you got nothin' to lose
Everybody else I know, it sucks to be in misery
    As if it was contagious
So come to me and promise me you'll
    Catch me if you can

'Cause I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm handsome
I'm as awful as they come, oh, what a pity
So thank the Lord above that I am pretty, so pretty
    So pretty
    So pretty

Well, I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm handsome
    Arresting, repossessing and disarming
Oh, what a stroke of luck that I am charming
Well, I heard that I am wanted by committee
I just thank the Lord above that I am pretty, so pretty

  • The first single from English Graffiti finds The Vaccines frontman Justin Young declaring "thank God I'm handsome!" He told The Guardian's Michael Hann in 2012: "The way bands look has always for me been a really important part of pop and rock'n'roll music. If a band looks good, they're more seductive. It wasn't supposed to look heavy rock."
  • The single was recorded at co-producer Dave Fridmann's Tarbox Road Studio in New York. Fridmann, has worked on records for such artists as The Flaming Lips, MGMT and Tame Impala.
  • The video was directed by the Barcelona-based international art collective Canada and shot in a warehouse in Brooklyn during December 2014. The clip sees The Vaccines learning kung fu under the tutelage of an alien lizard. "We wanted to create a video that was a sort of bubblegum ode to cinema and, in particular, Hong Kong kung fu movies," Young explained. "Music to me is entertainment and escapism: we wanted the video to be an extension of that. We wanted to create another world, in which we can play aspirational, heightened versions of ourselves."
  • Want some etymology? The original sense of 'handsome' deriving from the root word 'hand' was 'easy to handle or use.' This developed in the sixteenth century to 'suitable' and 'apt, clever.' The word's current meanings of 'visually attractive' and 'striking, of fine quality,' followed soon after.
  • The English Graffiti album title came from an article Justin Young read in The New York Times about the globalisation of culture. Speaking with NME, the Vaccines frontman detailed how the piece in question said that "it doesn't matter where you are in the world, the brunch always tastes the same."

He added: "We live in a really weird time. We're voyeurs. We're constantly looking at this constructed reality online. We feel super-connected, but I don't think we are. I feel a massive disconnect between what we perceive to be real and attainable and what actually is."
