This was the first Mick Jagger/Keith Richards composition. They wrote it when their manager, Andrew Oldham, locked them in his kitchen and told them to write some songs. At the time, The Stones were content to interpret songs written by other artists. This helped give Mick and Keith the confidence that they could be songwriters as well as performers.

A Pop ballad, this was a big departure from the Blues songs The Stones were covering at the time.

This was released as a single only in the US. It was their first Top 40 hit in America.

Keith Richards (1971): "Tell Me, which was pulled out as a single in America, was a dub. Half those records were dubs on that first album, that Mick and I and Charlie and I'd put a bass on or maybe Bill was there and he'd put a bass on Let's put it down while we remember it and the next thing we know is, Oh look, track 8 is that dub we did a couple months ago. That's how little control we had."

Mick Jagger (1995): "Keith was playing 12-string and singing harmonies into the same microphone as the 12-string. We recorded it in this tiny studio in the West End of London called Regent Sound, which was a demo studio. I think the whole of that album was recorded in there. But it's very different from doing those R&B covers or Marvin Gaye covers and all that. There's a definite feel about it. One of the most gut-wrenching songs on record, this one is about a man who tries to hide his pain, but cannot conceal the tracks made by his tears. He has come out of a relationship with the love of his life, and the song is his confession to her that his high spirits are just an act and she's the only one for him, or perhaps what he wants to tell her but can't.

Miracles leader Smokey Robinson came up with the concept when he was looking in the mirror one day, and thinking, What if a person would cry so much that you could see tracks of their tears in their face?

Miracles members Smokey Robinson, Warren Moore, and Marv Tarplin wrote this song. Robinson penned the lyrics; Tarplin, The Miracles' guitarist, came up with the riff. Robinson recalled: "'Tracks of My Tears' was actually started by Marv Tarplin, who is a young cat who plays guitar for our act. So he had this musical thing [sings melody], you know, and we worked around with it, and worked around, and it became 'Tracks of My Tears.'"

Tarplin got the idea for the music after listening to a calypso tune: Harry Belafonte's "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)."

Robinson had the music Tarplin wrote on a cassette, but it took him about six months to write the lyrics. The words started coming together when he came up with the line, "Take a good look at my face, you see my smile looks out of place." From there, it was a few days before he got the lines, "If you look closer it's easy to trace... my tears."

What to do with those tears was a problem, as he wanted to say something no one has said about tears. In a 2006 interview with NPR, he explained that he finally came up with the image of tears leaving lasting marks, and the song came together. "One day I was listening, and it just came - the tracks of my tears," said Robinson. "Like footprints on my face. So that was what I wrote about."

Four different artists have charted with this song in America. Johnny Rivers had the biggest hit, taking it to #10 in 1967. Two of the most acclaimed female vocalists of their time, Aretha Franklin and Linda Ronstadt, also charted covers, Franklin's making #71 in 1969 and Ronstadt's going to #25 in 1976.

Other notable versions of this song include renditions by Go West in 1993 and Adam Lambert in 2009.

When he first recorded this song with The Miracles, Robinson left out the last chorus, fading it out on the "I need you, I need you" line. He was convinced to end on the chorus when he played the song at one of the famous Monday morning meetings at Motown, where songs were scrutinized by their team.

Robinson wrote a similar song a few weeks later called "My Girl Has Gone," which was released as the next Miracles single.

Motown head Berry Gordy has said that this song represents Smokey Robinson's best work.

The song was popular among American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War, which is reflected in the 1986 Oliver Stone movie Platoon, where the song is used.

Uncle Phil is Phil Spector, a legendary producer who was friends with The Stones. Uncle Gene is Gene Pitney, a singer who wrote the Stones' "That Girl Belongs To Yesterday." They were frequent visitors at The Stones' recording sessions.

This is an instrumental The Stones recorded at the same session where they covered "Can I Get A Witness." Some of the keyboards were taken from that song.

This was credited to Nanker Phelge, a goofy name for a Jagger/Richards composition. "Nanker" was a wacky face they would make to amuse each other, "Phelge" was a roommate of Keith Richards whom he considered "The most disgusting person ever."

Ian Stewart played organ on this. Sometimes considered "The Sixth Stone," he also played on sessions for Led Zeppelin and formed his own outfit with Charlie Watts, Alexis Korner and Jack Bruce in the late '70s and early '80s called Rocket 88. This is not a Judas Priest original - it was first recorded by the British rock band Spooky Tooth on their 1969 album Spooky Two and written by their keyboard player/vocalist Gary Wright, famous for his solo hit "Dream Weaver." On December 23, 1985, this relatively obscure cover song became part of a music censorship controversy when 18-year old Raymond Belknap of Nevada killed himself with a shotgun after listening to the Stained Class album while smoking pot and drinking beer. His friend James Vance was with him and also shot himself (apparently they made a suicide pact), but survived another three years. After Vance died, the families of the men filed suit against Judas Priest and their record company, claiming the words "Do It" were subliminally embedded in the song, and encouraged their children to kill themselves.

Earlier in the 1988, a similar lawsuit against Ozzy Osbourne over his song "Suicide Solution" was dismissed on the grounds that music was protected under the first amendment, so the plaintiffs in the Nevada case took a different approach: instead of claiming that the lyrics compelled the teenagers to kill themselves, they claimed the subliminal messages did, and the Judas Priest was negligent for putting them in. The case was dismissed after a 17-day trial, with the judge ruling that the messages were not put there on purpose. The 1990 ruling stated: "The plaintiffs did not lose this case because defendants proved that subliminal stimuli have no effect on human behavior. Rather, plaintiffs lost this case because they failed to prove that defendants intentionally placed subliminal messages on the album and that those messages were a cause of the suicide."

Wild Boys Song Chart

This song is based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Burroughs. In the book, packs of adolescent humanoids ravage the civilized nations of the Earth. When wholesale slaughter erupts, the battle continues underground where the survivors evolve into The Wild Boys.

Duran Duran recorded the song because Russell Mulcahy, who directed their videos, bought the movie rights to the book and planned to make it into a film. The band wrote the song for the movie, which was never made.

At the time, this was the most expensive video ever made. It had a futuristic theme consistent with the book. Russell Mulcahy, whose work populated the early days of MTV, directed the video. He wanted to make a feature film based on the Wild Boys novel, but when that fell through he used many of his ideas for the movie in the video for this song.

Mulcahy's other work with Duran Duran includes videos for "Rio," "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Is There Something I Should Know?" He directed the first video to air on MTV in "Video Killed The Radio Star" and also directed videos for "Bette Davis Eyes," "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" and "Allentown."

The band wrote this song around the visuals they imagined for the Wild Boys film that was never made, thinking about what it would look like as they wrote it. Duran Duran was gaining a lot of popularity as a result of MTV, with videos for "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Rio" in heavy rotation, but this was the first time they wrote a song specifically for the visuals, which ended up being the video for the song and not the movie. Another instance of crafting a song for a video is Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science."

This contains themes of homosexuality, as the "Wild Boys" in Burroughs book were homosexual warriors.

Nile Rodgers produced this song. He was a leader of the '70s Disco group Chic.

This is the only new song on Duran Duran's live album Arena, which became the group's best-selling album. It's also the only studio track on the album.

In the video, there is a moment where Simon Le Bon is on a wheel and keeps being spun so that his head goes underwater. During the shoot, there was a point when he was dunked and not quite ready. In this song, Four Seasons frontman Frankie Valli is addressing a girl who is clearly in a funk. He's asking her to think about who really loves her and who is going to get her through these tough times, hoping she'll finally realize it's him.

The song was written by original Four Seasons member Bob Gaudio and a songwriter named Judy Parker, who later became his wife. Like many of the song Gaudio wrote for the group, the upbeat melody contrasts with a somber, lovelorn lyric. However, there is a bright spot. In our interview with Gaudio , he said: "'Who Loves You' is a dark lyric with a positive outcome: There's someone here for you, I'll take care of you. "

"Who Loves Ya, Baby" was the catchphrase of the actor Telly Savalas, who starred in the popular detective show Kojak from 1973-1978. Savalas also dabbled in music and released a single in 1975 called "Who Loves Ya Baby." Written by the Broadway composer Marvin Laird, the song finds Savalas imparting a sentiment similar to the Four Seasons song, as he sings:

So was the Four Seasons song inspired by Savalas and his famous phrase? Bob Gaudio told us: "Everything that goes in my brain, in my ear, gets processed. Did I hear that phrase? Sure. There's all kinds of inspiration. Did I specifically sit down and say, I'm going to write a song, 'Who Loves You,' because of Telly Savalas? No.

I think John Lennon once said good songwriters don't borrow, they steal. And if he didn't say it, I said it. I'll take it."

In the '60s, The Four Seasons were one of the most successful groups in America, with a retro sound featuring Frankie Valli's falsetto. That sound fell out of favor late in the decade, and in 1972 the group signed a deal with Motown Records. Their Motown output had little success, and in 1974 they split from the label.

By 1975, disco was starting its ascent and The Four Seasons were ready to ride that train. The group's '50s sound that was retro in the mid-'60s was now cutting-edge a decade later, as Valli's falsetto suited the disco groove perfectly. Now signed to Curb Records, "Who Loves You" was the group's first post-Motown single, and it brought them back in a big way. Their next single was an even bigger hit and just as groovy: "December 1963 (Oh What a Night)."

Various versions of this song were released. The single runs 4:04 and is backed by a disco version that goes 5:28. A Spanish version was also released called "Quien Te Ama."

The Who Loves You marked a new lineup for the group, which now had five members and played their own instruments (previous lineups used session musicians to back the vocalists). Original member Bob Gaudio was no longer performing with the group, but was their producer and contributed vocals and keyboards to their studio output. The lineup for this song was:
