I Say a Little Prayer Lyrics

The moment I wake up
Before I put on my makeup
I Say a Little Prayer for you
While combing my hair, now
And wondering what dress to wear, now
I say a little prayer for you

[Chorus]
Forever and ever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever, we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together forever, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me

I run for the bus, dear
While riding I think of us, dear
I say a little prayer for you
At work, I just take time
And all through my coffee break-time
I say a little prayer for you

[Chorus]

I say a little prayer for you
I say a little prayer for you
Forever and ever, you'll stay in my heart
And I will love you
Forever and ever we never will part
Oh, how I'll love you
Together forever, that's how it must be
To live without you
Would only be heartbreak for me

My darling, believe me
For me there is no one
But you

I Say a Little Prayer Song Chart
  • Burt Bacharach and Hal David wrote this song and also produced it. They first heard Dionne Warwick singing backup for The Drifters, which is when they realized she had the perfect voice for their songs. Bacharach and David had a string of hits with Warwick, including "Walk On By" and "Do You Know the Way to San José."
  • The song's writers were never happy with the tempo of this song, and thought it would flop. Burt Bacharach said in Record Collector magazine: "I never thought I made the right record on that. I think I made the tempo a little too fast, a little bit too nervous with Dionne. I didn't want the record to come out but got overridden. I'm glad that I got overridden."
  • In this joyful song of devotion, the singer doesn't just think about her man, she prays for him, starting from when she wakes up in the morning and continuing through her workday. She sounds a little co-dependent ("To live without you would only be heartbreak for me"), and there's even a chance that this is an unrequited love ("Why don't you answer my prayer?"). Nonetheless, most ears hear it as an expression of true love, which makes it a favorite at weddings. The song also resonated with wives and girlfriends whose men were fighting in the Vietnam War.
  • Aretha Franklin recorded this song less than a year after Warwick's version was released. In the UK, Aretha's recording was the big hit, making #4 (her highest-charting UK single after "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)," which hit #1). In the US, Aretha's version - produced by Atlantic Records head Jerry Wexler - was first released as the B-side of "The House That Jack Built," but quickly flipped when it was apparent that "Prayer" was the hit. Her cover went to #10 in the US.

The thread connecting these two versions of the song is the backup singers, the Sweet Inspirations. After performing on the original, the singers found themselves working with Aretha Franklin, who started singing it with them during sessions for her Aretha Now album. She came up with an original arrangement, and when Wexler heard it, he insisted on recording the song. Burt Bacharach has said that he likes Aretha's version the best, describing it as "much better than the cut I did with Dionne."
  • Something a little bit different - the song's title is in the verse, rather than the chorus. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • The female vocals are a crucial component to this song. They were performed by a group called The Sweet Inspirations, which were comprised at the time of Cissy Houston, Estelle Brown, Myrna Smith and Sylvia Shemwell (Houston is Warwick's aunt, and Whitney Houston's mother). Their contribution gave the song a powerful Gospel sound and made the chorus pop.

The Sweet Inspirations were in on this song at the same time as Warwick - they practiced it with her during rehearsals at Burt Bacharach's house. It was a very relaxed atmosphere where they were able to hone the song before entering the studio.
  • This song has made four trips to the US Hot 100, first by Warwick and Franklin, then by Glen Campbell and Anne Murray, whose medley of the song with "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" made #81 in 1971 (Dee Irwin & Mamie Galore also recorded this medley in 1968).

In 1997, the song was introduced to a new generation when Diana King did a cover for the 1997 Julia Roberts movie My Best Friend's Wedding. This version went to #38.

Another popular recording is by Sergio Mendes, whose piano-driven instrumental made #106 in 1968.
  • In a 1997 interview with Switch, Hal David explained that he would take a long, careful look at the work before fitting his words to Bacharach's melodies. He added that sometimes the placement of the title was not so obvious with Bacharach's music. For instance, the chorus section in 'I Say a Little Prayer,' that's ordinarily where the title would fall, but it seemed to me that the title should come in the less obvious place in the middle of the verse after 'The moment I wake up, before I put on my make-up.'" (This interview is available at Rock's Backpages .)
  • The B-side of the single was "Theme From Valley Of The Dolls," which Warwick recorded for the movie of the same name.
  • Irish singer Mary Black has recorded two versions of this song. A studio cut is on her 1989 album No Frontiers, and a live version is on her 2001 CD, Best Of Mary Black volume 2. (thanks, Martemus - Austin, TX)

    You Can't Catch Me Lyrics

    I bought a brand-new air-mobile
It custom-made, 'twas a Flight De Ville
With a pow'ful motor and some hideaway wings
Push in on the button and you can hear her sing

Now You Can't Catch Me, baby you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close, you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

New Jersey Turnpike in the wee wee hours
I was rollin' slowly 'cause of drizzlin' showers
Here come a flat-top, he was movin' up with me
Then come wavin' by me in a little' old souped-up jitney
I put my foot on my tank and I began to roll
Moanin' siren, 'twas the state patrol
So I let out my wings and then I blew my horn
Bye bye New Jersey, I've become airborne

Now you can't catch me, baby you can't catch me
'Cause if you get too close, you know I'm gone like a cool breeze

Flyin' with my baby last Saturday night
Not a gray cloud floatin' in sight
Big full moon shinin' up above
Cuddle up honey, be my love
Sweetest little thing I've ever seen
    I'm gonna name you Maybellene
Flyin' on the beam, set on flight control
Radio tuned to rock 'n' roll
Two, three hours passed us by
Five to two dropped to 5:05
    Fuel consumption way too fast
Let's get on home before we run out of gas

Now you can't catch me, no baby you can't catch me

  • Bruce Springsteen wasn't the first to write rock songs about the liberating power of a fast car - Chuck Berry also had a fascination with automobiles, which he sings about here (part of the song takes place on the New Jersey Turnpike, a road Springsteen is quite familiar with).

"This was a yearning which I had since I was aged seven to drive about in a car," Berry told Record Mirror in 1967. "It was my fascination for the roads, for driving, motoring, which prompted me to write those songs."

Driving way too fast under the moonlight with your baby in the car while listening to rock and roll on the radio... it doesn't get any better.
  • At the end of this song, we find out that the car is named Maybellene, referring to Berry's earlier automotive hit.
  • One of Berry's early singles, this song surprisingly had no chart success - it didn't even make the R&B tally where all of his previous singles cracked the Top 10.
  • Berry performed this song in the 1956 film Rock, Rock, Rock, where he can be seen doing his famous duckwalk.
  • John Lennon used the guitar riff and some of the lyrics to this for "Come Together." He was sued by Berry and eventually settled.
  • The Rolling Stones recorded this in 1965. Chuck Berry was one of their heroes, especially to Keith Richards.

    Roll Over Beethoven Lyrics

I'm gonna write a little letter,
Gonna mail it to my local DJ
    It's a rockin' rhythm record
I want my jockey to play
Roll Over Beethoven, I gotta hear it again today

    You know, my temperature's risin'
And the jukebox blows a fuse
    My heart's beatin' rhythm
And my soul keeps on singin' the blues
Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news

    I got the rockin' pneumonia,
I need a shot of rhythm and blues
    I think I'm rollin' arthritis
Sittin' down by the rhythm review
Roll over Beethoven rockin' in two by two

Well, if you feel you like it
Go get your lover, then reel and rock it
Roll it over and move on up just
A trifle further and reel and rock it,
    Roll it over,
Roll over Beethoven rockin' in two by two

Well, early in the mornin' I'm a-givin' you a warnin'
Don't you step on my blue suede shoes
Hey diddle diddle, I am playin' my fiddle,
    Ain't got nothin' to lose
Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news

You know she wiggles like a glow worm,
    Dance like a spinnin' top
    She got a crazy partner,
Oughta see 'em reel and rock
Long as she got a dime the music will never stop

    Roll over Beethoven,
    Roll over Beethoven,
    Roll over Beethoven,
    Roll over Beethoven,
Roll over Beethoven and dig these rhythm and blues

  • This song is about the rock 'n' roll craze that was taking over America. Beethoven and Tchikovsky were classical composers who were being bumped aside by rock. At the time, many critics dismissed rock music as a passing fad.
  • Berry was careful to write lyrics that told a coherent story, which in this case follows a young many as he pursues his favorite music. Berry also took care to deliver his lyrics clearly so a wider audience could understand them. This helped him avoid the fate of many Little Richard songs: more popular, but sanitized covers by Pat Boone.
  • The Beatles released a version of this in 1963. They played it at most of their early live shows.
  • This was used in the 1992 movie Beethoven, which is about a Saint Bernard.
  • The Electric Light Orchestra covered this in 1973, mixing in some of Beethoven's music. It was their biggest hit at the time, going to #6 in the UK and #42 in the US.
  • Iron Maiden spoofed this on their song "Roll Over Vic Vella," which was used as the B-side to the single for "From Now to Eternity" It's one of the few singles that featured a photograph of the band performing as cover art. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • For a February 4, 1977 primetime special celebrating 25 years of American Bandstand, Berry performed this song joined by Seals & Crofts, Gregg Allman, Junior Walker, Johnny Rivers, the Pointer Sisters, Charlie Daniels and Doc Severinsen. This was one of the first "all-star jams" that would later become commonplace. This performance served as a showcase for the musicians, who were introduced as they performed by Paul Williams . • Dean Madonia has been writing country music in Nashville since 2002. He met up-and-coming country artist, Tim Dugger, through a mutual friend who was producing Dugger. Madonia and Dugger wrote "(I Called Her) Tennessee" in their first writing session together.
  • In our interview with Dean Madonia , he revealed Dugger's intention for the tune: "He just wanted to write a song about partying and spring break and I was like, 'Well, I lived in Fort Lauderdale for 20 years so I know a little bit about that.'"

Madonia explained that they came up with the title first, which can sometimes make it difficult to write a song. When they got near the end of it, they needed a hook. "I thought of some people that I've known that we just called them by their state name: 'Okay, there Michigan. Hey, Alabama,'" said Madonia. "And it was like, 'Hey, I never knew her name so I called her Tennessee,' and we both looked at each other and were like, 'Yes!' So that was like a gift. It just came."
  • Tim Dugger is an Alabama native who relocated to Nashville, Tennessee. Dugger is a huge NASCAR fan and plays a great deal of concerts in that circuit. He became a favorite among the drivers and their crews, which ultimately led him to Nashville, where he signed a record contract with Curb Records.

    Rock And Roll Music
Just let me hear some of that
    Rock And Roll Music,
Any old way you choose it,
It's got a back beat, you can't lose it,
Any old time you use it.
It's gotta be Rock And Roll Music,
If you want to dance with me,
If you want to dance with me.

I've got no kick againt modern jazz,
Unless they try to play it too darn fast,
And change the beauty of the melody,
Until they sounded like a symphony,
That's why I go for that
    Rock and roll music

I took my loved one over cross the tracks
So she can hear my man await a sax,
I must admit the have a rockin' band,
Man they were going like a hurricane
That's why I go for that
    Rock and roll music

Way down South they gave a jubilee,
The jockey folks they had a jamboree,
They're drinkin' homebrew from a water cup,
The folks dancin' they all got shook up
    And started playin' that
    Rock and roll music

Don't care to hear 'em play a tango,
I'm in the mood to dig a mambo,
It's way to early for a congo,
So keep a rockin' that piano
So I can hear some of that
    Rock and roll music

    Tunnels Lyrics

    I am still, without devotion
Cause we're all asleep at the wheel
    Asleep and so surrounded by
    What we feel

    A bad dream

On a rope and pulled through an ocean
With my heart, I'm lost out at sea
And every kind of thought screams misery

    So lonely

    Im a johnny come lately
But I will not give up
And the words they escape me
But I'm full of dumb luck
And the world is an oyster
    With a poisonous shell
And the look in my eye
Is a look that can kill

    And Dream a bit

    I am not, without emotion
I have ran, from the pain of my will
From the mess of a hunt and a catch, and the thrill

    And I'm ill

I am known, in the circles of envy
I'd thank God, but then what is he for
Cause I left a few hard calls at his front door

    I'll leave more

    Don't you go
Come a little bit closer now
    If you like
    When you die

    Wake your soul
To a little light fire now
    If you like
    When you die

    Speak to me
Cry a river and make believe
    In the whites
    Of your eyes

    Clasp your hands
    Do whatever your heart commands
    You will find
    When you die

Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

Climb into my machine so we can cruise on out
I know a swingin' little joint where we can jump and shout
It's not too far back off the highway, not so long a ride
You park your car out in the open, you can walk inside
A little cutie takes your hat and you can thank her, ma'am
Every time you make the scene you find the joint is jammed

Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away
I'm gonna learn to dance if it takes me all night and day

And if you want to hear some music like the boys are playin'
Hold tight, pat your foot, don't let 'em carry it away
Don't let the heat overcome you when they play so loud
Oh, don't the music intrigue you when they get a crowd
You can't dance, I know you wish you could
I got my eyes on you baby, 'cause you dance so good

Oh Carol, don't let him steal your heart away

    Flood out the rat
    And stab em' dry

    Got ya' come on
    Goin in deep

    Get me a rope
Combing the lake of fire god

    Like a bullet
    Follow the smoke
    Head of the snake
    And cut it off

    Ghosts heroing front lines
    On a lonely cove
    And they left behind
    A bit if sorrow

You didn't need to count me out
When the final push is a little weight on your neck sometimes

You didn't need to count me out
When your feeling low here's a little
Hand from above because your on my mind

    You kinda got it
    Further a cause
    Broaden the reach

    A little pain
Like a comet burn up and die
Hear a pin drop a mile away

    Like a disease
    Move with a tease
    Glide of the feet
    An atom bomb

    As your dieing
    Both of your knees
    Will fall to the street

  • With a straightforward metaphor and complete lack of pathos, this not a typical Neil Young song. It finds him mining for a "heart of gold," which depending on your perspective, is either a touching and heartfelt sentiment, or a mawkish platitude. Rolling Stone took the churlish view, complaining that the album evoked "superstardom's weariest clichés." The listening public and Young's fans were far more accepting, however, and the song became his biggest hit.
  • Young wrote this in 1971 after he suffered a back injury that made it difficult for him to play the electric guitar, so on the Harvest tracks he played acoustic. Despite the injury, Young was in good spirits (possibly thanks to the pain-killers), which is reflected in this song. The next few years were more challenging for Young, as he suffered a series of setbacks: his son Zeke was born with cerebral palsy, his friend Danny Whitten died, and he split with his wife, Carrie Snodgress. His next three albums, which became known as "The Ditch Trilogy," expressed these dark times in stark contrast to "Heart of Gold."
  • This song was recorded at the first sessions for the Harvest album, which took place on Saturday, February 6, 1971 and were set up the night before.

Neil Young was in Nashville to record a performance for The Johnny Cash Show along with Tony Joe White , James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt. Elliot Mazer, a producer who owned nearby Quadrafonic Studios, set up a dinner party on February 5, inviting the show's guests and about 50 other people. Mazer was friends with Young's manager Elliot Roberts, who introduced the two at the gathering. Young and Mazer quickly hit it off when Neil learned that Elliot has produced a band called Area Code 615. Young asked if he could set up a session the next day, and Mazer complied.

Nashville has an abundance of studio musicians, but getting them to work on a Saturday could be a challenge. Mazur was able to get one member of Area Code 615: Drummer Kenny Buttrey. The other musicians he found were guitarist Teddy Irwin, bass player Tim Drummond, and pedal stell player Ben Keith. All were seasoned pros.

Keith recalls showing up late and sitting down to play right away. He says they recorded five songs before they stopped for introductions.
  • By far, this was the biggest hit for Young as a solo artist. A very influential musician, he was never too concerned about making hit records.
  • James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt sang backup; they don't come in until the end of the song. Like Young, Taylor and Ronstadt were in town to appear on The Johnny Cash Show (the song's producer Elliot Mazer had produced Ronstadt's 1970 Silk Purse album). Young convinced them to lend their voices to this track, and they came in on Sunday, February 8, the day after the rest of the song was completed.

When it was their turn to add harmonies, the task proved rather arduous. Ronstadt recalled to Mojo: "We were sat on the couch in the control room, but I had to get up on my knees to be on the same level as James because he's so tall. Then we sang all night, the highest notes I could sing. It was so hard, but nobody minded. It was dawn when we walked out of the studio."
  • In the liner notes to his Decade collection, Young said: "This song put me in the middle of the road. Traveling there soon became a bore so I headed for the ditch."

This statement reflected Young's aversion to fame, and was not meant to demean the song. In a later interview with NME, he clarified: "I think Harvest is probably the finest record I've made."
  • This was the song that tweaked Bob Dylan; Young had made no secret that he idolized Dylan, but when Dylan heard "Heart of Gold" he thought this was going too far. As quoted in Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History , Dylan complained, "I used to hate it when it came on the radio. I always liked Neil Young, but it bothered me every time I listened to "Heart of Gold." I'd say, that's me. If it sounds like me, it should as well be me."
  • This song was recorded in just two takes. The musicians were not familiar with Young or the song, but knew how to play. This spontaneity created just the right feel for the track - something that would have never come about through additional tweaking. This style of recording, where top-tier studio musicians are asked to give total focus to a take with little instruction, is something Bob Dylan often did. It's also a throwback to the analog days when tape (which was expensive) was rolling, making additional takes costly and cumbersome.
  • "Heart Of Gold" is the name of the spaceship stolen by Zaphod Beeblebrox in Douglas Adams' book, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy . (thanks, Charles - London, England)
  • Young became the first Canadian to have a #1 album in the US when Harvest topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks in April 1972.
  • This song appears in the 1984 film Iceman, and on the soundtrack of the 2010 movie Eat Pray Love.
  • Lady Gaga references this in her song "You and I." The line goes, "On my birthday you sung me 'Heart of Gold,' with a guitar humming and no clothes."
  • In 2005, the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version declared "Heart of Gold" to be the third best Canadian song of all time.
  • Stryper frontman Michael Sweet covered this for his 2014 I'm Not Your Suicide album. He also recorded a second duet version with country artist Electra Mustaine, who is the daughter of Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine.
  • Young revived the guitar riff for this song on CSN&Y's "Slowpoke" in 1999.
  • Tori Amos covered this on her 2001 album Strange Little Girls . She was trying to demonstrate how men and women hear different meaning in the same songs.

    Something I Need Lyrics

I had a dream the other night
About how we only get one life
Woke me up right after two
Stayed awake and stared at you
So I wouldn't lose my mind

And I had the week that came from hell
And yes I know that you can tell
But you're like the net under the ledge
When I go flying off the edge
You go flying off as well
And if we're only here once I wanna live with

    You've got Something I Need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)
    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you)

Last night I think I drank too much
    Call it our temporary crutch
With broken words I've tried to say
    Honey don't you be afraid
If we've got nothing we've got us
And if we're only here once I wanna live with

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)

I know that we're not the same
But I'm so damn glad that we made it
To this time, this time, now

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once
I wanna live with you, yeah

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)

    You've got something I need
In this world full of people there's one loving me
And if we only here once (hey)
I wanna live with you (you, you, you)
And if we only here once (hey)
    I wanna live with you
And if we only here once
    I wanna live with you

  • Croydon singer-songwriter Ben Haenow has sang in bands since his mid teens. In 2006 he became the frontman for the rock and roll band the Lost Audio, which he formed with his brother, Alex. However, Haenow only really came to the public's attention when he won the eleventh series of the UK version of The X Factor.
  • Haenow released a cover of OneRepublic's "Something I Need" as his winner's single. Produced by One Direction songwriter John Ryan, it was made available for download immediately after his victory on December 14, 2014.
  • The CD version features recordings of some of Haenow's greatest moments during his time on X Factor. Included are the singer's renditions of "Jealous Guy," "Highway To Hell" and "Man In The Mirror."
  • All the proceeds from the sale of the song went to the children's charity Together for Short Lives, which Simon Cowell has supported for a number of years.

    I Don't Like Mondays Lyrics

I Don't Like Mondays Song Chart
  • This is about Brenda Spencer, a 16-year-old San Diego high school student who lived across from an elementary school. On Monday, January 29, 1979, she opened fire on the school with a rifle, killing 2 adults (including the principal) and injuring 9 kids before going back to her home. Police surrounded her home and waited for 7 hours until she gave herself up. In that time, she spoke with a reporter on the phone. When asked why she did it, she replied, "I just started shooting, that's it. I just did it for the fun of it. I just don't like Mondays. I just did it because it's a way to cheer the day up. Nobody likes Mondays."
  • This was #1 hit in 32 different countries, but it flopped in America, probably because the subject matter hit too close to home. Gun violence is a big problem in America.
  • At a basic level, this is often heard as a song lamenting the beginning of the work week. Some radio stations play this every Monday at a certain time.
  • Group leader Bob Geldof wrote this. He went on to organize charity efforts Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8, earning a KBE (the equivalent of knighthood given to people born outside of England) for his efforts. The Boomtown Rats played this as part of their set at Live Aid.
  • While in Atlanta touring, Bob Geldof heard the news story about Brenda Spencer. Geldof composed the song on the spot, originally as a reggae number. Back in Los Angeles after the tour, a studio demo was recorded with grand piano and vocals. By the time 'I Don't Like Mondays' was introduced onstage in Loch Lomond, Scotland, the song had been transformed dramatically.
  • Brenda Spencer's parents tried to have the single banned in the US, without success.
  • The video, directed by David Mallet, was one of the first to have a narrative "story" to it.
  • In the UK, the song won the prestigious Best Pop Song and Outstanding British Lyric categories at The Ivor Novello Awards. It was also voted 1979's "Single of the Year" in the British Pop and Rock awards.
  • Tori Amos covered this on her album Strange Little Girls . Every song on the album is a different take on a song written by a man.
  • Bob Geldof sang this song along with members of the Boomtown Rats and Travis at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, London on July 2nd, 2005. Live 8 was a series of concerts, which occurred in the G8 nations and South Africa, that Geldof helped to organize in order to pressure world leaders to get rid of the debt of African nations. (thanks, Emily - Ottawa, Canada)
  • Geldof originally intended this to be a B-side and when Ensign put this out as a single, he protested, "You're mad, that's not a hit." However his record label people knew better.
