The starting point for this song was a quote from Walt Whitman's "A Song of Joys," which is part of the American poet's 1855 collection Leaves Of Grass:

Nightwish keyboardist and songwriter Tuomas Holopainen said: "The underlying theme of the song is nothing less than the meaning of life, which can be something different for all of us. It's important to surrender yourself to the occasional 'free fall' and not to fear the path less traveled by."

The video was shot in Finland at various locations between September and November 2014, and directed by Ville Lipiäinen. The clip was inspired by the untold stories of abandoned places across the country.

This song was inspired by Thin Lizzy's fans. The group wrote it after noticing that their shows were full of working-class guys looking to get out and have some fun. Their fans also had a tendency to drink heavily.

This gave Thin Lizzy worldwide exposure. They were popular in their native Ireland, but unknown elsewhere until this came out.

This was Thin Lizzy's only Top 40 hit in the US, but they had several other hits in the UK.

Thin Lizzy were surprised when this became their breakthrough hit – because they hadn't wanted it on their Jailbreak album. Guitarist Scott Gorham recalled to Classic Rock: "We were playing in some club in the US when our manager came in and said, 'Well, looks like we've got a hit.' We were like, 'Which song?' Seriously, we didn't have any idea at all which song it was that had taken off for us."

"To tell you the truth, we weren't initially going to put 'The Boys Are Back In Town' on the Jailbreak album at all," he continued. "Back then you picked 10 songs and went with those because of the time restrictions of vinyl."

"We recorded 15 songs, and of the 10 we picked, that wasn't one of them," Gorham added. "But then the management heard it and said, 'No, there's something really good about this song.' Although back then, it didn't yet have the twin guitar parts on it."

In Your Eyes Song Chart

According to Gabriel, the lyrics could refer to either the love between a man and woman or the relationship between a person and God.

African musician Youssou N'Dour sang backup. In 1991 Gabriel performed this in N'Dour's native country of Senegal before a crowd of 70,000.

This was featured in the 1989 movie Say Anything in a scene where John Cusack plays this from a Boom Box he holds over his head to win the heart of Ione Skye. Cameron Crowe, who directed the film, was going to use Billy Idol's "Got To Be A Lover," but it didn't work with the scene. Crowe got the idea to use this when he played a tape from his wedding which had the song on it. Because it was a deeply personal song, Gabriel did not want to let him use it, but when Crowe called and sent him a tape of the movie, Gabriel loved it and gave his approval.

The producers of Say Anything (see a still) were charged about $200,000 to use the song, but it was worth the price as it became one of the most famous scenes in movie history. The scene became a cultural touchstone, which was a little strange for Gabriel. He told Rolling Stone in 2012: "I've talked to John Cusack about that. We're sort of trapped together in a minuscule moment of contemporary culture."

A special 7:14 mix of this song was released to radio stations by Geffen Records. It features extended singing by Youssou N'Dour. This promotional copy also included a 6:15 version of the song, and an 8:36 of Gabriel's "Biko." (thanks, Rob - Hutchinson, KS)

This is one of the few slow songs that gets consistent airplay on rock radio. It was not real popular when it came out, but continues to get constant airplay on a variety of formats, as listeners never seem to tire of it.

The band SR-71 also does a cover of this song. They performed it live at the 2004 Gravity Games. (thanks, Brad - Hickory, NC)

In 1994, Gabriel did a version of "In Your Eyes" live, which appears on disc 2 of the double CD set of Secret World Live, and lasts 11:34. On this version, he improvises a lot in the song with the backup singers. (thanks, Glenda - Austin, TX)

The singer/guitarist Jeffrey Gaines recorded a popular version of this song that got a lot of airplay on Adult Contemporary radio and appears on his 2001 album Always Be. Gaines writes most of his own material, but his cover of "In Your Eyes" has become his best-known work. When we asked him about performing a song written by someone else, he replied: "The conviction I have within that material is my joy of singing."

This song from the award winning musical My Fair Lady had a rather unusual inspiration.

According to Dominic McHugh of the University of Sheffield in the one-off documentary Michael Grade's Stars Of The Musical Theatre, leading man Rex Harrison was not entirely happy with his role. One day, he and lyricist Alan Lerner were walking down 5^th Avenue talking about their marital problems. Harrison's first marriage ended in divorce in 1942; his second wife lasted from 1943 until 1957, and he would eventually marry no fewer than six times. At that time, Lerner was on wife number 3 (or possibly 4); he would go on to marry eight times! There must be a song there, but somehow "Alan The Eighth" doesn't have quite the same ring to it as the name of a certain infamous king.

This prompted Harrison to shout out to Lerner: "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we were both homosexuals?" which even in the 21^st Century is not an appropriate title for a song. However, Lerner was inspired by some lateral thinking, and produced the lyric for this one.

Harrison was the third choice to play Henry Higgins in this show, the second was Noël Coward, and if he had been chosen to play the lead, this song would never have been written! (thanks, Alexander Baron - London, England)

In English this Swedish title renders "Hello, Old Man."

A folk number about an old soldier, this song spent 15 weeks at the top of the Svensktoppen chart, Sweden's equivalent of the BBC.

This jazz standard was written by Walter Donaldson (music) and Gus Kahn (lyrics) for the 1930 film adaptation of the musical comedy Whoopee!, where it was first performed by Eddie Cantor. Along with the film's "Makin' Whoopie," it would become a signature tune for Cantor.

Peaking at #82 on the UK chart, this would be a minor hit for Nina Simone when it was included on her debut album, but it would later revitalize her career and introduce her to a new generation of fans when it was borrowed for a Chanel No. 5 ad in 1987. The re-released track, through Charly Records, would peak at #5 on the UK Singles Chart.

Simone, who always had a tenuous relationship with record labels, was too busy being outraged to enjoy her newfound popularity, claiming she didn't receive any royalties from the popular TV commercial. According to NME, she said of the negotiations in 1987: "They went behind my back and stole from each other like I was a slave. They took me and sold me from one record company to another because they couldn't deal with me openly!"

Aardman Animations produced a claymation music video to accompany the 1987 re-release, with Simone portrayed as a cat performing at a nightclub.

The entire Little Girl Blue album was recorded in one 14-hour session, with this song as the last to be recorded.

Edward Norton and Natasha Lyonne performed this in Woody Allen's 1996 musical comedy film Everyone Says I Love You.

This has also been recorded by Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Mary Wells, Amanda Lear, Dick Van Dyke, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper.

Florence Welch, of Florence + the Machine, performed this with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra for the New Year's Eve show Hootenanny in 2009.

Danny Thomas performed this on his TV series Make Room for Daddy with Marjorie Lord in the 1961 episode "Keeping Up with the Joneses."
