Seasons Lyrics

Listen honey, to every word I say
I know that you don't trust me
But I'm better than the stories about me
Everybody messes up some days
Ain't got no rhyme or reason
All I know is I'm yours, yours, yours for every season

Baby girl with the broken smile
Would you mind if I stayed awhile
And if you're cold I could light your fire
If that's what you want, if that's what you want
I admit that I've done some wrong
But those wrongs helped me write this song
And through it all I figured out where I belong
Right by your side, right by your side

They say that hearts don't lie
The head might try but it won't be right
Ya tell me what you feel inside
Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight

Listen honey, to every word I say
I know that you don't trust me
But I'm better than the stories about me
Everybody messes up some days
Ain't got no rhyme or reason
All I know is I'm yours, yours, yours for every season

Baby girl let your hair hang down
And if we're lost, baby let's get found
And when your world is flipping upside down
Let's make it right, let's make it right

They say that hearts don't lie
The head might try but it won't be right
Ya tell me what you feel inside
Tonight, tonight, tonight, tonight

Listen honey, to every word I say
I know that you don't trust me
But I'm better than the stories about me
Everybody messes up some days
Ain't got no rhyme or reason
All I know is I'm yours, yours, yours for every season
Yours, yours, yours for every season

Winter, summer, spring and fall
I'll be on the line waiting for your call
Winter, summer, spring and fall
I'll be on the line waiting for your call
Winter, summer, spring and fall
I'll be on the line waiting for your call

Listen honey, to every word I say
I know that you don't trust me
But I'm better than the stories about me
Everybody messes up some days
Ain't got no rhyme or reason
All I know is I'm yours, yours, yours for every season
For every season

    Mary, Did You Know? Lyrics

Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you

Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God

Mary did you know, Mary did you know, Mary did you know

The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb

Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I am

  • The words for this song were written by former Gaither Vocal Band baritone singer Mark Lowry after his pastor asked him to write a Christmas musical for their church. Lowry ended up penning a series of monologues based on Christmas songs including a conversation with Mary about the birth and life of her son Jesus. "I wanted to ask her what it was like to raise God," he told The Lubbock Avalanche Journal. "We read that the word became flesh, and it was just a very powerful thought, to look at those little hands of Jesus that had scooped out oceans, land and rivers."

Lowry worked on the lyrics for years, until he approached southern gospel singer-songwriter and harmonica player Buddy Greene on a tour bus and told him he had written some "questions for Mary." Greene agreed to Lowry's request to come up with some music for his words, completing the instrumentation within a few days. The result was this Christmas classic. "That's what happened," said Lowry. "Really, all I did was write a poem. Buddy turned it into a song."
  • American Christian singer Michael English was the first artist to record and release the song when he included it on his 1991 self-titled debut solo album. English had been in the Gaither Vocal Band between 1985 and 1994, for the last six years with Mark Lowry.
  • Pentatonix recorded the song for their 2014 album That's Christmas to Me. Their a capella version became a Hot 100 Top 40 hit, after its video took the internet by storm.
  • The song had its first widespread exposure to country radio when Nashville artist Kathy Mattea recorded her version of the song in 1993 for her Christmas album Good News. Other recordings of the tune by country artists include a 1997 duet version by Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers, which peaked at #55 on the country chart. Reba McEntire, Rascal Flatts and Scotty McCreery are some of the other Nashville artists who have recorded the song.
  • Many gospel and R&B artists have also covered the song. The first African-American performer to record the tune was Vickie Winans, who included it on her 1994 self-titled album. Cee Lo Green's 2012 rendition reached #22 on the R&B chart in 2012.
  • The song was used as the basis for a Bruce Greer penned stage musical, also titled Mary, Did You Know. The production won the 1999 Dove Award for Musical of the Year.
  • Kevin Olusola of Pentatonix told Artist Direct why the a capella group recorded a festive album. "Christmas is such a great time, especially for a cappella music," he said. "People are more willing to listen to that style."

"We realized that after our Christmas single 'The Little Drummer Boy,'" he continued. "It did so well. We knew we wanted to do something more extensive. That's when we got the idea of doing a full-length Christmas album."
  • Jordan Smith performed this song during the 2015 season nine finals of The Voice and went onto to win the competition. The following week his version debuted at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

    The Bitch Is Back Lyrics

I was justified when I was five
Raisin' Cain, I spit in your eye
Times are changin' now the poor get fat
But the fever's gonna catch you when the bitch gets back, oh, oh, oh

Eat meat on Friday, that's all right
Even like steak on a Saturday night
I can bitch the best at your social do's
I get high in the evening sniffing pots of glue, oh, oh, oh

I'm a bitch, I'm a bitch oh, the bitch is back
Stone cold sober as a matter of fact
I can bitch, I can bitch 'cause I'm better than you
It's the way that I move, the things that I do oh

    I entertain by picking brains
Sell my soul, by dropping names
I don't like those! My God, what's that!
Oh, it's full of nasty habits when the bitch gets back.

I'm a bitch, I'm a bitch oh, the bitch is back
Stone cold sober as a matter of fact
I can bitch, I can bitch 'cause I'm better than you
It's the way that I move, the things that I do oh

I'm a bitch, I'm a bitch oh, the bitch is back
Stone cold sober as a matter of fact
I can bitch, I can bitch 'cause I'm better than you
It's the way that I move, the things that I do oh

Bitch, bitch, the bitch is back

  • Elton is the "Bitch." One day when he was in a foul mood, complaining about anything and everything, Bernie Taupin's wife, Maxine, saw him and said "Uh-Oh, the bitch is back." Bernie Taupin writes Elton's lyrics and thought it was a great phrase. He wrote lyrics around it and Elton put it to music.
  • A lot of radio stations refused to play this because it said "bitch." When it became a hit, a lot of these stations began playing it, but some aired an edited version with the word "bitch" blanked out. This version sounded really dumb because the word is repeated over and over.
  • Elton: "It is kind of my theme song."
  • Tower of Power supplied the horns. They are a popular R&B group who did very well in the early '70s with hits like "You're Still A Young Man" and "So Very Hard To Go." Their horn section has played on albums by Santana, Little Feat, Rod Stewart, America, Huey Lewis and many others. Founding member Emilio Castillo told us:
"This is what we do, it's like sweat. It's what we do naturally and the thing that makes us so special. There aren't a lot of horn sections in the world, certainly not a lot of horn sections that have been together doing it as long as we have, that play a signature style like we do. We have a definite style to the way we approach section work, we clip our notes, we get very tight, we've got to have this ESP going between the guys as far as how to interpret certain horn licks." (Check out our interview with Emilio Castillo. You can learn much more at his website, towerofpower.com .)
  • Elton recorded the album in the mountains of Colorado at the Caribou studios owned by Jim Guercio, who was famous for his work with the bands Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago. The album was named after the studio.
  • They finished the album in about a week because Elton and his band had to leave for a tour.
  • When Hillary Clinton went to bookstores to promote her autobiography in 2003, a conservative group called The Free Republic staged "audio protests" by playing this and other unflattering songs at her signings.
  • Elton John performed this with Rihanna at the third annual Fashion Rocks Concert in 2006. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Lita Ford covered this and incorporated it into the title of her 2013 live album The Bitch is Back... Live. Turning the song into a guitar-rocker with help from her producer Gary Hoey, Lita felt the song was appropriate to her, as she had returned to the music industry after taking time off to raise her two children.

    Put My Heart Down Lyrics

I never pictured us ever fighting this much
Thought we were figured out but it's so messy now
Your words they cut so deep and I think that you should leave
I'll have to live without what I can't live without
    It already hurts
So before it gets worst just

Put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away
    Just like it was
    A loaded gun
Put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away
    This kind of love
    Is dangerous

So pack up all your things and just leave some air to breathe
A million toxic tears falling like rain 'round here
    This is the final hour
The end of our story tonight
    And I don't wanna fight

So put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away
    Just like it was
    A loaded gun
Put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away
    This kind of love
    Is dangerous

    Oh, it already hurts
    So before it gets worse
    I know it ain't easy
But if you really loved me

Just put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away, yeah

Just put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down
    And walk away
    Just like it was
    A loaded gun
Put my heart down, put my heart down
Put my heart down, put my heart down

  • The love that Sara Evans is singing about in this song is a toxic one. The Nashville songstress told Rolling Stone Country that she feels the message of this Nathan Chapman, Andrew Dorff and Liz Huett penned tune was an important addition to her Slow Me Down album. "She's being very smart and strong, recognizing a bad relationship and saying, 'Please leave me alone. Please walk away.' It's painful for her to say that, but she knows she needs to, which is not that common," said Evans. "I'm always drawn to songs where the woman is the victim, the one being hurt. But I like that this one is saying, 'Let's stop this while we're ahead.'"

"So many people will stay in a bad relationship, even at the very beginning when they see warning signs, and they'll still pursue that relationship when they know it's not a good match," she continued. "How many divorces would not happen if people would recognize the warning signs early on? If the relationship is toxic, move on. There are a gazillion fish in the sea."
  • Sara Evans premiered the song on Nashville singing it as a duet with Will Chase, who plays Luke Wheeler on the hit show.
  • The song's music was shot in an historic mansion in Nashville and directed by Peter Zavadil. It features Evans surrounded by hundreds of lights. "It's to symbolize the light going off in her head," the singer explained. "It's her being smart and realizing exactly what the relationship is. It's not that she has 100 percent courage to do this. [She's saying], 'I'll walk away, and you walk away… but you first. Don't pursue me, because it's going to be hard for me to resist you.'"
  • Evans explained that what first attracted her to this tune was that it's a sad song with a happy melody. "I like the contradiction and I think it makes for a really interesting overall song," she said. "Peter [Zavadil] found a great way to bring that contradiction to the screen with the light bulbs and showing them eventually exploding. You have such beautiful and pretty scenes with the soft lighting and beautiful mansion, contradicted by the exploding bulbs. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out."

    Climbing Up The Walls Lyrics

I am the key to the lock in your house
That keeps your toys in the basement
And if you get too far inside
    You'll only see my reflection

It's always best when the light is off
I am the pick in the ice
Do not cry out or hit the alarm
You know we're friends till we die

    And either way you turn
    I'll be there
    Open up your skull
    I'll be there
    Climbing up the walls

It's always best when the light is off
It's always better on the outside
Fifteen blows to the back of your head
    Fifteen blows to your mind

So lock the kids up safe tonight
Shut the eyes in the cupboard
I've got the smell of a local man
    Who's got the loneliest feeling

    That either way he turns
    I'll be there
    Open up your skull
    I'll be there

  • This is the first track in the band's repertoire to be described as "scary." It relies heavily on strings, but not in the conventional way. The string section features 16 different violins playing quarter tones apart from each other.
  • Lead singer Thom Yorke: "This is about the unspeakable. Literally skull-crushing. I used to work in a mental hospital around the time that Care In The Community started, and we all just knew what was going to happen. And it's one of the scariest things to happen in this country, because a lot of them weren't just harmless... It was hailing violently when we recorded this. It seemed to add to the mood."
  • More from Yorke: "Some people can't sleep with the curtains open in case they see the eyes they imagine in their heads every night burning through the glass. Lots of people have panic buttons fitted in their bedrooms so they can reach over and set the alarm off without disturbing the intruder. This song is about the cupboard monster." (thanks, michelle - shingle springs, CA, for all above)
  • Radiohead recorded the album in the mansion of actress Jane Seymour, who was busy filming her show Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Ed O'Brien felt that the gothical mood of this track was the result of recording in its library. The Cure also recorded their 1996 Wild Mood Swings album in Seymour's mansion.
  • The phrase "Climbing up the walls" means being in a state of agitation through stress or worry.
  • Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood sometimes uses a radio when they perform this, tuning it to different stations during the song. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • The string coda at the end was largely inspired by an interest the band had in modern Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki, whose works also feature on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

  • The song's refrain of "Everything's gonna be OK," is about the self-delusion that is sometimes necessary for surviving modern life. The band's Dave Sitek told NME: "The 'I keep telling myself...' line means that it might not be true. Everyone goes through that, on multiple levels. There's a lot of doubt floating around. What has modern living and its aspirations led to? ''Trouble' at least for me, is about putting your helmet on."

    A Better Tomorrow Lyrics

Yo, this goes for all my brothers and sisters locked down
For all my peoples incarcerated, for those who ain't make it

Yo, in the housing, thousands seen early graves
Victims of worldly ways, memories stays engraved
All my live brothers, is locked down with high numbers
The young hunger, blind to these lies, they die younger
In this New World the Order slaughter men, women, and children
Ten feet gates surround the building keep us sealed in
The projects, lifeless like a Vietnam vet
Constant war, sever threats of enemy conquest
Crooked cops comb my building complex that's in the rumble
Streets are like a jungle, can't let my cipher crumble
Vivid thoughts, Devils resort to trick knowledge
They kick garbage, lust for chicks and quick dollars
I know the pain the game bring, I did the same thing
Spaced out in the staircase, performing a sting
It's hard to keep control, I bless those who seek a scroll
Trying to reach a whole nation and break the sleeper hold
Not a role model, I walk a hard role to follow
I sold bottles of sorrow then chose poems and novels
The gospel was told, some souls it swallowed whole
Mentally they fold, and they eventually sold
Their life and times, deadly like the virus design
But too, minute to dilute, the science is mine

You can't party your life away
    Drink your life away
    Smoke your life away
    Fuck your life away
    Dream your life away
    Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

A voice cries from the wilderness of the North
A representation of the families that lost one
    All victims of incarceration
Or other divisions of the family structure
Youths are injected with serums that leads
To skin irritations, babies being born with
    Disfigurations, experimentations
On their faces there bear world relations
Of mothers that carry the pain
Of blood stained streets where sisters mourn and wail
Big brothers been slain from hails of gun fire
It lightly begins to rain screams of terror
Are hidden by the passing trains
This can't be little Shane, his uncle cried
As he drops to his nephew's side, holding his cane
Just give me a name, of who has inflicted this
Bitter sickness, and left us to witness

    Yeah, yo
Curses from war, innocent blood spills for days
Soothe in godly ways, hands, solemn in praise
Tree of life, more precious than Wu is golden game
The wise self flourish inherit, Halls of Fame
Crime visions in my blood got me, locked in prison
While we die hard living people whine about religion, vision
Blow, spin, and sin and killing what's revealing
It's a never ending battle with no ending or beginning, listen
Zero process, progress, become the hunted
America's most wanted, good life flaunted, want it
Some love the speed, some satisfy a need
Some want to be down, young gun seed, jungle breed
The stronger speed, someone die, someone bleed
One flew astray, and then caught my little seed
Can it be, the ice have us trifle life, made me grab the knife
The righteous man would be within these stripes pipes
Take in my energy, breath and know the rest
Cause the good die young and the hard die best

You can't party your life away
    Drink your life away
    Smoke your life away
    Fuck your life away
    Dream your life away
    Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

Y'all bitches love dances, and pulling down your pants
While your man's on tour, your spending up his advances
Your friends ain't shit, all they do is drink, smoke, and suck dick
The whole projects is trapped in stench
You either high school drop-outs, one to three cop-outs
Fifteen years old, shorty ass and top out
Ninety-nine cent beer drinking pussy stinking
Fucking so much your ass and titties start shrinking
New World Order slave trade, minimum wage, better cage
Can a devil fool a Muslim nowadays
Inside my lab, I'm going mad
Took two drags off the blunts, and started breaking down the flag
The blue is for the Crips, the red is for the Bloods
The whites for the cops, and the stars come from the clubs
Or the slugs that ignites, through the night, by the dawn
Early light, why is sons fighting for the stripe

As we dwell through this concrete hell, calling it home
Mama say, take your time young man and build your own
Don't wind up like your old dad
Still searching for them glory days he never had
So many bad want to scheme for American dream, no more kings
The cash rule everything now, we going down
These babies looking up to us, it's up to us
The Million Man March MC's, get on the bus
But envy, greed, lust, and hate, separate
Though the devil mind state blood kin cannot relate
    No longer, brothers, we unstable
Like Kane when he slew Abel, killing each other

You can't party your life away
    Drink your life away
    Smoke your life away
    Fuck your life away
    Dream your life away
    Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

    A Better Tomorrow Song Chart
  • The title track of Wu-Tang Clan's sixth album shares its name with a song they featured on their 1997 sophomore LP, Wu-Tang Forever. The reference in both instances is to John Woo's 1986 crime film, A Better Tomorrow.
  • RZA explained the album title to Billboard magazine : "John Woo has always been an inspiration to me," he said. "But it wasn't just in reference to that film, because that film is actually a very violent film, very specific about the police corruption and things of that nature. My concept of a better tomorrow, moreso, is what the sentence says itself. We need a better tomorrow."

"I'm a vegetarian. Why? Because no animal needs to die for me to live," RZA added. "I'm into renewable energy, I'm into getting rid of the plastic bottles and coming with another form of drinking our water. I'm into the people respecting each other. We don't got to like each other but respect each other for everything you are, whether you're black, brown, white or red, homosexual, woman, whatever it is. We gotta have respect for each other first."
  • This samples Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' 1975 single, "Wake Up Everybody."
  • The song's music video compiles protest footage from Ferguson, Missouri and New York City as well as soundbites from President Obama speaking on race relations in America. "This visual was created by Wu-Tang Clan in the hopes of inspiring change and promoting unity throughout the world, The Wu-Tang Clan said in a press release. They added a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
  • Asked by NME what his biggest regret about the A Better Tomorrow album was, RZA replied: "I tried to get James Blake to do a hook on 'A Better Tomorrow' but we couldn't make it happen in time."

The pair did previously work together on Blake's Overgrown track "Take A Fall For Me."

    Win, Lose Or Draw Lyrics

Endlessly facing the cold concrete floor
Four cold grey walls, and no doors
I barely remember the last forty days
Or just what they're holdin' me for
So far away, they tell me:
"boy, you're here to stay; win, lose or draw"
Letters unanswered and visits so few
    Cold desperation I know
I guess I'd give most anything
Oh lord, if they'd just let me go
    I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw

    Ma, she's dead and gone
Pa just don't seem to find the time
It makes me so sad that he's forsaken me
When he's all I had left I call mine
    I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw.

There's two men in one room for ten long years
Still strangers that talk away the time
'cause each time I think of your soft hand in mine
I lay here and die one more time
    And I'm so far away
    Day after lonely, lonely day
    Win, lose or draw

It's The Hard Knock Life Lyrics

It's The Hard Knock Life Song Chart
  • With music by Charles Strouse and lyrics by Martin Charnin, this song debuted in the 1977 Broadway musical Annie as the cast of orphans lament their struggles laboring for the unscrupulous Miss Hannigan. The play follows Annie's adventure as she meets the wealthy Daddy Warbucks, who tries to help her find her real parents.
  • In a Blender interview, Strouse notes how this song stands out from the rest of the Annie repertoire: "Most of the songs in Annie are very 1920s, more upbeat, but 'Hard Knock Life' had to reflect the fact that the kids in the story were underprivileged and exploited. So I wrote a very angry, angular melody, quite unlike the other songs."
  • Jay-Z spun this into the innovative rap song, "Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)," in 2002, where he likened the hardships of the orphans to the struggles of kids growing up in the ghetto.
  • Playing the youngest orphan, Molly, Danielle Brisebois leads the chorus on this track, which was sampled for Jay-Z's version. While the song became a gold-certified single, all Brisebois was left with was sour grapes. Because she was paid a flat fee when she performed the song for the musical, she doesn't earn any royalties from it. "As a result, I’m singing the lead vocal on a #1 song but not making a penny out of it," she said.
  • Annie was adapted into a feature film in 1982 with Aileen Quinn in the lead role, while Toni Ann Gisondi played Molly. Albert Finney and Carol Burnett starred as Daddy Warbucks and Miss Hannigan, respectively.
  • Produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith, this hit the big screen again in 2014 with Quvenzhane Wallis as Annie, Jamie Foxx as Will Stacks (Daddy Warbucks), and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan. Nicolette Pierini filled the role of Molly, updated as Mia.
  • For the 2014 film, the lyrics to this song were altered to reflect the children being foster kids instead of orphans. Jay-Z's version is prominently featured in the movie's trailer.

Aside from four new songs ("The City's Yours," "Opportunity", "Who Am I", and "Moonquake Lake"), the soundtrack borrows the original Broadway tunes, with an arrangement by Australian pop singer Sia and Greg Kurstin.
  • The lyrics reference New York City's Chrysler Building: "You'll stay up till this dump shines like the top of the Chrysler Building." Designed by William Van Alen, the Art Deco-style skyscraper was briefly the tallest building in the world (1,046 ft) until it was surpassed by the Empire State Building (1,454 ft). Completed in 1930, it would have been three years old during Annie's 1933 setting.
  • The orphans also suggest making Miss Hannigan drink a Mickey Finn, which is slang for a drug-laced beverage. The name was allegedly taken from Chicago bar owner Michael "Mickey" Finn, who was prosecuted for slipping mickies to his patrons so he could rob them.
