Lunch Money Song Chart

This menacing track finds Pusha T claiming his place at the top and going for his competitors. The Virginia native told MTV News he wants the listener to take literal meaning from the track's title. "I'm here to take everybody's lunch money. I really am," he said. "That's what I feel like I'm doing - it's the spirit of competition, I put out a record like this to make a statement. It's a competitive sport."

Kanye West supplied a noisy, dissonant beat for the track. "That's the type of energy I'm looking for in creating this new King Push album," he said of the track's instrumentation. "It needs to be rebellious and angry. I was trying to go for that, I have expressed that to [Kanye] so many times, so I guess when he was cooking up, this is what he came up with."

"It was a concept Kanye West had, and he knows that when he does these unorthodox tracks, I'm probably gonna be the first one up to bat," Pusha added. "My sensibility with those type of beats– that's just what I'm attracted to. So he played it for me and man I went at it."

This is about the dangers of heroin use. U2 stayed mostly drug-free, but they had many friends who became addicted.

This was one of the first U2 songs produced by Brian Eno. Eno, who had worked with David Bowie and Talking Heads, went on to produce The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.

U2 would revisit the theme of heroin abuse later on the album with "Bad" and on The Joshua Tree with "Running To Stand Still."

A friend of the band, Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, died from heroin abuse in 1986.

U2 bass player Adam Clayton was arrested in Ireland for marijuana possession in 1989. The conviction was waived in lieu of a donation to charity.

Originally recorded during the sessions for Soundgarden's 1996 album Down On The Upside, the song was finally included on Echo Of Miles: Scattered Tracks Across The Paths, a three-disc compilation that containing rarities from the band's history. "I'm shocked it didn't pop up on Down on the Upside, but that's probably another story," guitarist Kim Thayil said to Artist Direct with a laugh. "It was recorded and tracked then. There were things about the guitar performances I wasn't that happy with, but I could live with at the time. There were things about the vocal performances Chris (Cornell, vocals) wasn't happy with. However, Ben (Shepherd, bass) loved it, Matt (Cameron, drums) loved it, and Adam Kasper, our producer, loved it. It's one of Matt's favorite songs and one of Adam's. We hemmed and hawed. We never got around to mixing it. We just left it uncompleted. There wasn't enough enthusiasm to have it make it to the album with all of the material we had and were working with."

"I was a little bit bummed because I wrote the music and Chris wrote the lyrics," Thayil added. "I think I only had one song on that album, which was a bit frustrating and disappointing, but here you go!"

"This is probably one of the strongest songs that didn't make the record and certainly is probably stronger than many of the songs on the record," he continued. "Once Adam got around to mixing it in the past year, we realized how solid it was. Matt has always kept it in the forefront of his mind and would always mention it to us. So would Adam. They'd say, 'That's a special song. We have to do something with that.' It was a weird oversight due to self-criticism and self-conscious that we chose to look away from it. Given time, we realize what a gem it was."

A Sort Of Homecoming Song Chart

The title comes from Jewish poet Paul Celan, who wrote: "Poetry is a sort of homecoming." Celan drown himself in the Seine river in 1970.

First track on The Unforgettable Fire, the first U2 album produced by Brian Eno. It had a different sound than previous U2 albums, as Eno buried the guitar in the mix.

Brian Eno slowed down the drum track on this song later in the Unforgettable Fire sessions and told Bono to improvise lyrics over it. Cleopatra Song Chart

This song finds Rivers Cuomo breaking free of a co-dependent romance with a girl, whom he likens to the legendary Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra. He goes on to wish his ex the best, predicting great things for her.

This shifts from the standard 4/4 beat to 5/4 in the chorus. Asked during a Reddit AMA about the reason for the unusual time signature, Cuomo replied: "It just came to me, that's how the melody popped into my head. And I wasn't counting beats."

Cleopatra VII (69 BC – 30 BC) was the last active pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, only shortly survived by her son, Caesarion. The name Cleopatra is derived from the Greek name Kleopatra, which means "glory of the father" in the feminine form.

Cleopatra was summoned by Mark Antony to explain her refusal to aid the leader of the Caesarion faction in the civil war he was occupied in, She sailed to him dressed as Venus in her river barge where she worked her charms on the Roman general. Instead of punishing her, Antony fell in love with the Siren of the Nile. On December 25, 40 BC, Cleopatra gave birth to twins fathered by Antony, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene.

On one occasion Cleopatra gave a lavish banquet for Antony at Alexandra. The Roman general expressed his surprise at the outlay involved. Cleopatra, to impress him further, took a pearl earring and dissolved it in vinegar to prove she could consume a fortune in a single meal.

Cleopatra committed suicide in Alexandra in 30 BC by inducing an Egyptian cobra to bite her after Antony had committed suicide. (Dying of snakebite Egyptians believed conferred immorality.)

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the first Moon landing than to the building of the Great Pyramid.

New Year's Day Song Chart

The lyrics refer to the movement for solidarity lead by Lech Walesa in Poland. After this was recorded, Poland announced they would abolish martial law, coincidentally, on New Year's Day, 1983.

This was U2's first UK Top 10 and their first single to chart in America.

This almost didn't make the album because Bono was having fits writing the lyrics.

The Edge played piano on this as well as guitar. In concert, he played the song on the piano with his guitar in his lap. For his guitar solo, he would get up and go to the front of the stage as the crowd cheered wildly.

This was the first U2 video to get heavy airplay on MTV, and it was by far their most ambitious video to that point. It was directed by Meiert Avis, who worked on U2's previous videos, including "Gloria" and "I Will Follow." They planned to shoot the video in Sweden, but when the mountains and snow they hoped for didn't materialize, they tried Norway. They got the majestic mountains and tight shots of the band performing the song, which was more than adequate for MTV in 1983.

We also see what is supposed to be the band riding horses, which were actually four teenaged girls covered in winter clothes. The guys in U2 weren't experienced riders, and since they were in the middle of a tour during the shoot, it wasn't worth the risk.

The themes of understanding in a time of global unrest were a focal point for the album War, whose title was inspired by the various worldwide conflicts of 1982.

The line "Under a blood red sky" was used as the title for a video and live album U2 released in 1983. The video was recorded at Red Rocks, Colorado, June 5, 1982. The album contains performances from that show as well as two others.

Bono considers this a love song. While it is about war, it deals with "The struggle for love."

Bono wrote this shortly after he married his childhood sweetheart, Ali.

This song was recorded at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, which is where U2 recorded their first three albums. The studio had a stone stairway where Larry Mullen played his drums for this track.

This is commonly played at bars every New Year's Day for lack of something more appropriate.

This is a popular song for other artists to sample or cover. With It Guys used the piano line as a sample in the song "Let The Music Take Control," Manchester rappers Kiss AMC sampled the intro for their song "A Bit Of U2," the group Dynamic Base used the sample on their "Africa" single and Bacon Popper did the same on "Free." This is the title track from Sting's seventh solo studio album. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the singer wanted to create an album focused on love. He explained to The Daily Telegraph: "It's a post-September 11 record. I think it really was a watershed. An event like that makes you redefine your craft and question what function you serve in society. If the world's going to hell in a hand basket then, you know, how can you either help that along or stop it I'm 51 and I'm not going to write about dancing particularly, or girlfriends, or cars. There is a place for trivia in pop music. I'm responsible for some of it. But sometimes you've got to get serious. My intention is to create something beautiful and unique and pleasing to people and at the same time tell the truth about how I feel in the world."

"I famously made an off-the-cuff comment about tantric sex one day that sped around the world like a digital virus and continues to reverberate even now, seventeen year later," Sting wrote of this song in Lyrics By Sting. "The interpretation that tantra has to do with 'staying power' is of course fatuous, but the idea that sex could be considered a sacred act seemed too much for a world media attuned to the minutiae of trivia. Sex is either scandalous - when, for example, politicians are caught in flagrante delicto - or it's used to sell cars and aftershave. In both cases, eroticism, the most powerful force in our human nature, is devalued to the point of worthlessness."

As for that famous quote, Sting once claimed he and wife Trudie Styler had seven-hour tantric sex sessions. Years later he joked on Inside the Actors Studio that "seven hours includes movie and dinner."

Sunday Bloody Sunday Song Chart

There are two Bloody Sundays in Irish history. The first was in 1920 when British troops fired into the crowd at a football match in Dublin in retaliation for the killing of British undercover agents. The second was on January 30, 1972, when British paratroopers killed 13 Irish citizens at a civil rights protest in Derry, Northern Ireland. The song is more about the second Bloody Sunday. The lyrics are a nonpartisan condemnation of the historic bloodshed in Ireland - politics is not something you want to discuss in Ireland. Bono's lyrics in the song are more about interpersonal struggles than about the actual Bloody Sunday events.

Bono used to introduce this at concerts by saying: "This is not a rebel song."

U2 has played several times at Croke Park, the site of the 1920 Bloody Sunday in Dublin. They first performed there in 1985 on the Unforgettable Fire tour.

Bono started writing this with political lyrics condemning the Irish Republican Army (the IRA), a militant group dedicated to getting British troops out of Northern Ireland. He changed them to point out the atrocities of war without taking sides.

While performing this, Bono would wave a white flag as a call for peace.

Bono was trying to contrast the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre with Easter Sunday, a peaceful day Protestants and Catholics both celebrate.

Larry Mullen's drums were recorded in a staircase of their Dublin recording studio. Producer Steve Lillywhite was trying to get a full sound with a natural echo.

Steve Wickham, who went on to join The Waterboys, played the electric fiddle.

This took on new meaning as the conflict in Northern Ireland continued through the '90s.

U2 recorded this in Denver for their Rattle And Hum movie on November 8, 1987. It was the same day as the Enniskillen massacre, where 13 people in Northern Ireland were killed by a bomb detonated by the Irish Republican Army (the IRA). Angered by these events, U2 gave a very emotional performance.

The version on U2's live album Under A Blood Red Sky was recorded in Germany.

In 2003, The Edge inducted The Clash into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In his speech, he said, "There is no doubt in my mind that "Sunday Bloody Sunday" wouldn't - and couldn't - have been written if not for The Clash."

A live version of this song plays during the end credits of the 2002 movie Bloody Sunday, which is a documentary-style drama recreating the events of January 30,1972 in Derry, Ireland. It stars James Nesbitt (you may remember him as "Pig Finn" from Waking Ned Devine) as a local Member of Parliament who is involved with the Civil Rights Movement. (thanks, Jet - Seatown, ST)
