This song was originally something Charli was working on with Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend. The two started writing it after seeing Miley Cyrus play the Staples Center and then getting drunk. "We went back to his house and I sat on top of [Batmanglij's] piano, and we wrote 'Kingdom,'" Charli told Pitchfork . "We sung it into his phone. I remember thinking in the morning, 'Ugh, this is going to be the worst thing ever,' but it was really good."

The tune remained as a drunken voice note on their phones until Hunger Games Mockinjay soundtrack curator Lorde called Charli up and asked her to lend a song to the movie. The English songstress figured out "Kingdom" would fit well.

Lorde asked asking Charli if she wanted to "put a legend on the song as well." Among her suggestions were Duran Duran's Simon Le Bon, who ended up supplying a brief vocal at the end of the track. "[Le Bon] cut his vocal in New York with Rostam, so we were never in the studio together," Charli told Radio.com . "But we had an email chain going, which was awesome. He sounds incredible, it's really cool to work with someone who's such a legend."

Ladder Song Song Chart

This song was originally recorded by Bright Eyes for their 2011 album The People's Key. It was covered three years later by Lorde for the soundtrack of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 movie. The New Zealand teenager's voice is almost unrecognizably high and fragile on her version of the ballad. "I went into the studio with all intention of singing it low and it just," she told Billboard magazine... I've never sung like that."

Lorde explained why she covered the song during a Twitter Q&A: "To me it felt like the perspective of a divine being (or even a modern-day reader) looking down at the events in Panem," she said. This song was influenced by Springsteen's working class father. Bruce did not get along with his dad growing up, but came to appreciate the work he did to raise his family. Bruce never had a job besides making and playing music.

Springsteen earned a reputation for relating to the common man, and this song is a great example why. Explaining how he came to write songs dealing with his father, like this one and "Adam Raised A Cain," Springsteen told Rolling Stone: "When I went to work, I really went to work in my dad's clothes, and it became a way, I suppose, that I honored him and my parents' lives, and a part of my own young life. And then it just became who I was."

Lucinda Williams covered this for her 2016 Ghosts of Highway 20 album. The country rocker's version is dedicated to her father-in-law, who worked in a factory for more than 30 years. Williams' husband and manager, Tom Overby, produced Highway 20 and is a huge fan of Springsteen's song.

Jo Dee Messina originally penned this tune with Pink in mind. "I wanted to co-write it with her while she was in town, but it ended up that she had a crazy schedule," she said … so I was like, 'I'm going to finish this song anyway.'"

The song was inspired by a real person. "Maybe this is too much behind the song, but it's about a guy in the industry who's, like, Joe Cool," she divulged. "He just thinks he's, like, the Cat's Meow, and I had seen him backstage, and all these little girls are hanging on him."

"He's not an artist. He's not a singer. But he's just some guy that thinks he's, like, the coolest thing, and he plays that off, and girls buy into it," Messina added. "I remember seeing him backstage, with girls all around him, and I'm like, 'Dude.'"

"I was like, 'Oh, young girl. Walk away,'" she continued. "He is messed up, you know? This guy is never going to change. He's a dog. He always will be a dog. And so, that's where literally the idea came up."

Springsteen wrote this about a small-time drag racer who dreams of a better life somewhere else. Like Steve Earle's "Someday," it describes that very American desire of the young man to leave his town and see what is out in the big world - to avoid that soul killing life they see around them. This is one of many early Springsteen songs featuring cars - in this case a Chevy. Some others were "Thunder Road," "Backstreets," and "Pink Cadillac."

Bruce explained to Rolling Stone in 2010: "When you pick a song title like 'Racing In The Street,' that's a hard song to write. But that was sort of the local culture of Asbury in the '70s, which was still deeply enmeshed in car culture. If you went to the Stone Pony, it was a constant circle of souped-up muscle cars on Saturday and Sunday. Once again, I sort of stood outside of it, I was hitchhiking, I didn't have a car! But I wanted one real bad."

Springsteen wrote in his book Songs : "I wanted my street racers to carry the years between the car songs of the '60s and 1978 America."

This song is filled with technical details about remodeling cars. Although he did love cars, Springsteen had to ask for advice and was careful to be correct in his language. However, after the song was released, a mechanic friend exclaimed that you couldn't put fuelie heads on a '69 Chevy and proceeded to prove his point. (thanks, Jesse - Roanoke, VA)

The last line in the song is a takeoff on Martha And The Vandella's "Dancing in the Street." Springsteen sings: "Summer's here and the time is right for racing in the street."

This was included on Springsteen's box set Live 1975-1985.

Emmylou Harris and Queen's Roger Taylor have both covered this song. Harris cites Springsteen as inspiration for her songwriting and influence on her 1985 album The Ballad of Sally Rose. Springsteen's 1982 Nebraska album, in particular, was a big influence. "I was so inspired by the bravery of that record and the emotion of that record that I said, 'I've really got to just do this project,'" Harris said in our 2014 interview .

The lyrics use biblical images to explain the relationship between a father and son. Cain was Adam and Eve's rebellious son who couldn't measure up to the goodness of his brother Abel. In the book of Genesis, Cain becomes jealous when God prefers Abel's offering to his own. He lures him out into a field and murders him, but he can't hide the act from God, who puts a mark of damnation on his forehead and sentences him to life as a restless wanderer. He can't even hope to be killed, for whoever sees the mark will know they "will suffer vengeance seven times over" if they were to kill him.

Springsteen's song examines Adam's role in raising a son that went down such a crooked path.

Springsteen calls this song "emotionally autobiographical." The bitter, but loving relationship between the father and son is similar to Springsteen's with his dad. Said Springsteen: "Our actual relationship was probably more complicated than how I presented it. Those songs were ways that I spoke to my father at the time, because he didn't speak and we didn't talk very much."

This was used in the movie Baby It's You, directed by John Sayles, who would direct Springsteen's videos for "I'm On Fire" and "Born In The U.S.A."

In the 2010 documentary The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town, sound mixer Chuck Plotkin described Springsteen's instructions for how the jarring assault of this song should sound next to the more melodic tunes on Darkness. Springsteen told Plotkin to think of a movie showing two lovers having a picnic, when the scene suddenly cuts to a dead body. This song, the singer explained, is that body.

Jungleland Song Chart

This is a poetic tale of life on the streets of New Jersey. Beginning with a simple piano intro, Springsteen goes through a series of abstract images and introduces a series of characters in the song, including Magic Rat and Barefoot Girl. It's a song that led to comparisons with Bob Dylan, notably Dylan's "Desolation Row."

Born To Run came with lyrics to the songs, so listeners could follow along. Reflecting on the album years later, Springsteen singled out the last verse of "Jungleland" as an example of his work that had "a lot of overblown romance, but still contained the seeds of realism."

Springsteen and the E Street Band performed this live for over a year before they recorded it. It developed into a longer song with a grand sax solo when it was finally released.

This features the piano of Roy Bittan. He joined The E Street Band for Born To Run after playing in orchestra pits on Broadway.

This was a highlight of Springsteen's 1999 reunion tour with The E Street Band. The tour went very well, and the band continued to play and record together.

Suki Lahav played the violin. She was the first female to play in Springsteen's band, and was with him from September 1974 - March 1975.

This is the last song on Born To Run, the breakthrough album for Springsteen. He tested the patience of Columbia Records by taking over a year to record it, refusing to release it until it was just right.

Clarence Clemons played a long sax solo on this. With his bright suits and large stature, he was the most notable and popular member of The E Street Band, and when it came to this song, he wasn't demure. "That’s one of the classic saxophone solos in the history of the world, if I may say so myself," he said. Clemons was disappointed when the song was not included on the 1995 Greatest Hits album.

Babies Song Chart

The 'Stanhope Road' mentioned in the lyrics are likely referencing a real-life Stanhope Road in the Intake district of Sheffield, where Jarvis Cocker was born and raised.

In 2009 on the Sky Arts show Jarvis Cocker: Songbook, Cocker discussed the song's genesis with Will Hodgkinson, noting that it came from drummer Nick Banks messing up some chords on the guitar, and Cocker overhearing this and running with the sounds these gaffed chords had generated to create the song.

Like a few other singles in the early 1990s for the band, "Babies" was released in several versions - originally as a 12" single for Gift Records in 1992, before a remixed version was put out on the Sisters EP in 1994 and made it onto their breakthrough album His 'N' Hers in the same year.

This tale of voyeurism, with Cocker singing about spying on two sisters, spawned a sequel in the Pulp song "Your Sister's Clothes," which takes place four years later.

This is one of several Springsteen songs featuring the first name of a girl who is not a specific real person. Besides Terry, Springsteen has also sung about Mary, Wendy, Sandy and Rosie.

"Backstreets" became the name of a popular Springsteen fan magazine that continues to publish.

This goes over very well when Springsteen plays it live. The version on the boxed set Live 1975-1985 was taken from a show at The Roxy in 1978.

Mac Powell wrote this song with Darius Rucker. Like Powell, the former Hootie & the Blowfish frontman has successfully swapped genres and become a country favorite. "I know that he put a lot of work into making that (switch) happen," said the Third Day frontman. "It's a little different in the sense that he wasn't really doing a lot of Hootie & the Blowfish and I'm still doing 100 Third Day dates a year. But it gave me hope that I can try it as well."

Powell explained to Taste of Country how the collaboration came about: "We met through that connector that's called Twitter," he said with a laugh. "I'm a fan of his, so as a fan, I can speak directly to him, and I think slowly through some other mutual fans that like my music, they said, 'You guys should get connected,' and I said, 'Well, I'm game.' And he said, 'I'm ready.' So we just started direct messaging each other on Twitter, and came up with a time, and I drove over to Charleston to his place."

"It was very - and I mean this in a good way - it was very business-like," Powell continued. "I got there, and he said, 'Hey, how ya doing, do you need some water? Alright, whatcha got? Let's get to work!" It wasn't until we were done that we got to share some stories and talk and get to know one another a little bit, but during that couple of hours, I showed him an idea and he was like, 'Great, let's get to work on that.'"

"We finished the song in an hour, and then he said, 'Well, what else you got?' And I showed him another idea, and he was like, 'Man, that's great too, let's work on that.' So in a good way, it was very business-like, because we knew we had to get to work," he added. "We didn't have time to shoot the bull. The reason we were there was to write together, and the other stuff would come later on. And it did."
