Blaze of Glory Lyrics

I wake up in the morning
And I raise my weary head
I've got an old coat for a pillow
And the earth was last night's bed
I don't know where I'm going
Only God knows where I've been
I'm a devil on the run
A six gun lover
A candle in the wind

When you're brought into this world
They say you're born in sin
Well at least they gave me something
I didn't have to steal or have to win
Well they tell me that I'm wanted
Yeah, I'm a wanted man
I'm a colt in your stable
I'm what Cain was to Abel
Mister catch me if you can

I'm going out in a Blaze of Glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm no one's son
Call me young gun

You ask about my conscience
And I offer you my soul
You ask if I'll grow to be a wise man
Well I ask if I'll grow old
You ask me if I've known love
And what it's like to sing songs in the rain
Well, I've seen love come
And I've seen it shot down
I've seen it die in vain

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
'Cause I'm going down in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
I'm the devil's son
Call me young gun

Each night I go to bed
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
No I ain't looking for forgiveness
But before I'm six foot deep
Lord, I got to ask a favor
And hope you'll understand
'Cause I've lived life to the fullest
Let this boy die like a man
Staring down a bullet
Let me make my final stand

Shot down in a blaze of glory
Take me now but know the truth
I'm going out in a blaze of glory
Lord I never drew first
But I drew first blood
And I'm no one's son
Call me young gun
I'm a young gun
Young gun, yeah yeah yeah
Young gun

Blaze of Glory Song Chart
  • This was featured in the movie Young Guns II, starring Emilio Estevez. According to an article in Entertainment Weekly, Bon Jovi wrote the song after borrowing a script from the movie from his friend Estevez. Jon showed up on the set in New Mexico with an acoustic guitar, and played the song for the film's screenwriter John Fusco, who had used "Wanted Dead Or Alive" as "Mood Music" while writing the first Young Guns. Bon Jovi played the song for Fusco, who loved it and put it in the movie.
  • In this song, the singer is determined to fight to his death, knowing he will be remembered for his bravery.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded this as a solo project while he was taking a break from his band. Not only did he branch out from the group, but he also made a foray into acting, appearing in Young Guns II as a pit inmate who is shot back into the pit. He had appeared as an actor many times since, including roles in the movies U-571 and Pay It Forward, and the TV shows Sex and the City and Ally McBeal.
  • This was nominated for, but did not win an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1991, losing to Madonna's "Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy. Jon Bon Jovi got the band back together to perform this at the Academy Awards telecast.
  • Bon Jovi ended up recording a whole album of songs inspired by Young Guns II, which was released a week after the film and also called Blaze of Glory. It was his first solo album, and it sold over 2 million copies. To play on the album, Jon recruited some big names, including Elton John, Little Richard and Jeff Beck, who played slide guitar on this track. Randy Jackson also appeared on the album and played bass guitar on this track. Jackson said on American Idol that it was his second best performance ever. He didn't disclose what he felt was his best performance.
  • Danny Kortchmar, who co-wrote many of Don Henley's hits, produced this track, as well as the entire Blaze Of Glory album, with Jon Bon Jovi. "We were having a great time with the musicians we were playing with and we were just having a ball in the studio," Kortchmar told us .

Shortly after they finished the project, Kortchmar was asked to produce the Hall & Oates song "So Close," so he brought Jon along with him. They did such a good job on the track that they were given composer credits on the song, which made #11 in America.
  • This was #1 in Australia for six weeks.
  • The song won a Golden Globe award for Best Original Song.
  • This was included on the 1994 Bon Jovi greatest hits album Cross Road.
  • The music video, directed by Wayne Isham, was shot atop thousand-foot cliffs outside Moab, Utah. Everything needed for the Western-styled shoot was flown in by helicopter. To save the hassle of flying to and from a hotel, Jon and the crew camped out in the desert heights for three days.

    The Stranger Lyrics

    The plane comes down
    Behind enemy lines
The stars shine obscenely above you
You don't speak the language but
    You've learned your lines
And you have a gift for making people love you

    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all

You follow the river until you reach the top
Sleeping rough getting closer to the target
The nights and days have murdered all
Keeping you down, you dreaming like
Of all the things you'll have to forget

    Now you're a strange,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all
    Now you're a STRANGER,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better

There is a billboard by the station
And behind it is the drop
You have one last thing you have to do
If you want all this to stop
Just remember who your friends are
Keep in mind you are the lone
Look inside the envelope, you're never going home

    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better
Till you feel nothing at all
    Now you're a stranger,
Now it feels better, it feels better and better

  • This song was inspired by vocalist Torquil Campbell's reading about the public school educated British/Soviet double agent Kim Philby, who was one of the most notorious traitors in UK history. "To be English is to have secrets; to be a stranger; so in a way I guess this song is about me," Campbell told The Line Of Best Fit . "But it really started with an image of a parachute in the night sky, and it went from there."
  • Murray Lightburn from The Dears plays the guitar on the track. "You could argue that me and him are the darkest f--kers on the Montreal music scene," said Campbell. "It's all a bit dark, but quite velvety. Like a nice mug of cocoa with some cyanide in it."

    Livin' on a Prayer Lyrics

    Once upon a time
    Not so long ago

Tommy used to work on the docks
    Union's been on strike
He's down on his luck, it's tough, so tough
Gina works the diner all day
Working for her man, she brings home her pay
    For love, for love

She says we've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love, we'll give it a shot

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a Prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
    Livin' on a prayer

Tommy's got his six string in hock
Now he's holding in what he used
To make it talk, o tough, it's tough
    Gina dreams of running away
When she cries in the night
Tommy whispers baby it's okay, someday

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love, we'll give it a shot

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
    Livin' on a prayer

We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got

    Whooah, we're half way there
    Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it, I swear
    Livin' on a prayer

Livin' on a Prayer Song Chart
  • The follow up to Bon Jovi's #1 hit "You Give Love A Bad Name," this song tells the story of Tommy and Gina, two kids working to make it on their own despite constant hardships. It struck a chord with America's youth, especially the ones from New Jersey. The characters in the song relate to the working class fans Bon Jovi played to. "Tommy" works on the docks, while "Gina" works in a diner.
  • Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this with Desmond Child , a prolific songwriter who was brought in by the record company to give them a more commercial sound like he did for Kiss on "I Was Made For Lovin' You."

The characters Tommy and Gina were based on a real life situation Desmond encountered in the late '70s with his then girlfriend, Maria Vidal, who he was living with. According to the notes in his Desmond Child & Rouge: Runners In The Night album, Desmond was a New York taxi cab driver and Maria was a waitress in a diner. (thanks, Gavin Radcliffe - Colchester, United Kingdom)
  • Derek Shulman, who was the lead singer and multi-instrumentalist in the band Gentle Giant, signed Bon Jovi to Mercury Records. In our 2009 interview with Derek, he said: "Slippery When Wet was a really well-constructed pop album. When it was done, I knew in my gut that it was gonna be this big. Because it was the right time, the right place, the right artist. And I had learned some of the business side from being in the business that long, and also having a musical background, I knew that this was gonna be that big. And in fact I also put them together with a co-writer called Desmond Child, who could write great choruses. Here's me looking at Desmond Child and I'm thinking, Man, I wish I would have had choruses like they could write." (Check out the full Gentle Giant interview with Derek and his brother Ray Shulman)
  • At first, Jon Bon Jovi wanted to leave this off the Slippery When Wet album, thinking it wasn't good enough. According to Jon, a meeting with a group of teenagers changed his mind and it was added to the album.
  • Richie Sambora used a talkbox on this, which gave it a very distinctive sound. A talkbox is an electronic device that allows a guitar player to make distorted sounds with his mouth. Peter Frampton is famous for using one on his 1976 album Frampton Comes Alive, but the technique lost popularity a few years later. When Bon Jovi released this, it was the first time many young people heard a song featuring a talkbox. Peter Frampton builds all of Richie Sambora's talkboxes for him.

Jon Bon Jovi told Q magazine December 2009 about the difficulties of using a talkbox: "You know that thing is not very easy to play. Basically everything gets fed through a one-inch tube that goes in your mouth. Then you try to sing through it into a live mic. I tried it once. It will damn near take your face off. Your eyeballs are being dislodged from their sockets, man."
  • The album was going to be called "Wanted Dead Or Alive" (another song on the album) and show the band on the cover dressed as cowboys. After doing the photo shoot in a mine shaft, the band decided they were taking it too seriously, changed the title to "Slippery When Wet," and found a Jersey girl with big boobs to wear a wet T-shirt for the cover. When parents' groups protested the cover, they changed it to a wet trash bag with the title written on it.
  • This opens with a 14-second synthesizer note. You could get away with that in the '80s.
  • In a 2007 interview with Time magazine, Jon Bon Jovi was asked what song showed "The Real You." His response: "I think if there was only one, it would be a tough choice between 'Livin' On A Prayer' and 'Wanted Dead Or Alive.' Maybe because the themes of 'Wanted' are a little more universal, it makes 'Prayer' that much more unique. There is nothing that you can say is derivative about the song. It is its own entity." He went on to say: "I think I find more strength in faith than I do in organized religion. 'Livin' On A Prayer' is most certainly nondenominational."
  • In the 2000 Bon Jovi song "It's My Life," the two characters from this track are mentioned in the line, "This is for the ones who stood their ground, for Tommy and Gina who never backed down." Sambora used a talkbox on that song as well.
  • Bon Jovi played a slow version of this September 21, 2001 as part of the "Tribute To Heroes" telethon to benefit victims of the terrorist attacks on the US. Almost 60 million people watched the show, which included performances by U2, Sting, Billy Joel, Mariah Carey, and Neil Young. Celebrities answering phones included Selma Hayek, Jack Nicholson, and Brad Pitt. The slow version was also performed at the "Concert For New York" to honor the rescue workers at The World Trade Center.
  • Bon Jovi performed this, along with "It's My Life," at the closing ceremonies of the 2002 winter Olympics.
  • On VH1's The Greatest Songs of the '80s special, this was voted the best song of the decade. (thanks, Dawson - Draper, UT)
  • In March 2008 this returned to the UK charts at #70, thanks to its use by Gareth Gates on the celebrity Ice Skating show Dancing On Ice. Despite the interest stirred up by the use of this track by Gates, the routine resulted in his elimination.
  • In an interview with The Guardian November 5, 2009, Jon Bon Jovi was asked whether the Tommy character was a strike-breaker. He replied: "No. He just lost his job - it wasn't that he crossed the [picket] line. The industry left the town and he didn't get the job back. It was a fictional character. The inspiration was a young couple who got pregnant and gave up everything they had, but that didn't read right, so we changed the story."
  • Jon Bon Jovi told The London Times in May 2010 that he never gets tired of singing this song: "Not when I see the jet with my name on it."
  • At the 2010 Grammy Awards, Bon Jovi performed this song as a result of a fan vote. As the show progressed, viewers were asked to choose which song the band would perform: "Livin' On A Prayer," "It's My Life" or "Always." Vote totals were not divulged, but it's likely that this fan-favorite won in a landslide. Richie Sambora talked about it after the show: "Jon came up with the idea of actually doing a three-song medley, and we opened up with 'We Weren't Born To Follow.' And then we went into the Grammy song with Jennifer Nettles that we won - 'Who Says You Can't Go Home.' And then we had - which I thought was the interesting part of it - a contest. So the fans actually voted on the song we would play. It was legit, man. We didn't know 'til the last minute what we were gonna to do. We had them all ready to go. We rehearsed them all and then at the last minute, that's what they told us - they said, 'Livin' On A Prayer' was the one." (thanks, DeeTheWriter - Saint Petersburg, Russia Federation)
  • Classic songs often make their way back to the charts years later if they are used in commercials, movies or TV shows, or otherwise granted some fresh, high-profile attention. Thanks to a change in Billboard's method for tabulating the Hot 100, however, this song made it back to the chart thanks to a viral video.

In February 2013, YouTube views and other streams became a factor in the Hot 100, resulting in "Harlem Shake" hitting the top spot. In October, a video was posted of basketball fan Jeremy Fry dancing to "Livin' On A Prayer" during a stoppage in play at a Boston Celtics' home game from March 2009. The Celtics were the defending NBA champs and doing very well at the time; Fry's performance embodied the camaraderie and enthusiasm in the arena, as he spontaneously used his two minutes of glory to glide down an aisle, singing to delighted onlookers along the way.

Fry's dance routine drew millions of worldwide views, and on November 20, the song charted at #25, 26 years after if first appeared.
  • "I think the most interesting part of that song, it was the first time we ever used characters," Richie Sambora told Fuse TV. "And quite frankly it was because in our life at that point, in that juncture of time, we were 26 years old. I was. Jon was probably 24 at the time. And all we knew at that point was being on the road and women, so that's predominantly what we kind of sang about in those days. Then we decided to jump into the social lyric with 'Livin' on a Prayer,' and bring in two characters, Tommy and Gina, which essentially were some blue collar people trying to make ends meet through life, and essentially that was my parents. It could've been Jon and I in that particular part of time. It could've been anything, but what that did, they became everybody across the world. Because at a time, every couple, no matter what, is going through that hardship where they're trying to make ends meet and it's not coming easy. They gotta get over that hurdle. So that was a very inspirational song, and it's morphed and transformed throughout the years."
  • Sambora on resurrecting his old talkbox for the record: "I had put it down for many, many years, and for some reason in the studio that night, I just said, 'I'm just gonna try this whacked idea on you guys, and you're probably gonna think it's crazy but it might be really cool.' And as soon as it sounded everybody just went, Hit. Record."

    I Wish You Would Lyrics

I Wish You Would Song Chart
  • This song finds Taylor regretting the way she broke up with an ex-lover. A part of her wishes he would run back to her and, maybe, they will get back together. It sends a completely different message to the commitment-phobic beau in "All You Had to Do Was Stay."
  • Taylor told Rolling Stone the song is about an ex who bought a house two blocks from hers (whom she implies was Harry Styles). Her liner notes message for this song state: "He Drove Past Her Street Each Night."
  • Taylor starts the song with her ex driving past her house.

It's 2 am, in your car
Windows down, past my street the memories start

The implication is that Taylor's former boyfriend has been up all night thinking.

The singer frequently uses 2 a.m. in her songs, having also given the time a shout out in "Breathe," "The Way I Loved You," "Mary's Song (Oh My My My)," and "Enchanted."
  • The song is one of three 1989 tracks written and produced by Taylor with fun.'s Jack Antonoff (the others are "Out Of The Woods" and "You R In Love.")
  • This originally sampled a snare from Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy," which came about from Swift and Antonoff bonding over the '80s pop group. "The moment when we shifted from friendship into working together was when we were talking about the snare drum on Fine Young Cannibals' 'She Drives Me Crazy,'" Antonoff told Rolling Stone. "Taylor brought it up first, and I was like, 'Holy s--t, you're not going to believe this: I just sampled that snare in a track.' I played her one second of it on my iPhone, and she was like, 'Send me that track.' That became a song called 'I Wish You Would.'"
  • There are three bonus tracks on the deluxe edition of 1989 that are actually voice memos recorded to Taylor's phone that were later turned into songs (This song, "I Know Places" and "Blank Space"). We hear her explain: "This is a song I did with Jack Antonoff, and Jack is one of my friends and so were hanging out and he pulled out his phone and goes 'I made this amazing track the other day. It's so cool, I love these guitar sounds.' And he played it for me and immediately I could hear this finished song in my head, and I just said 'Please, please let me have that. Let me play with is, send it to me.'"

"And so he sent it to me and I was on tour and this was me playing the track on my laptop recording me singing the vocal into my phone and it ended up being a song called 'I Wish You Would,' because Jack wrote back and said 'I love that.' So this is another way of writing, it's writing to track."

    Runaway Lyrics

On the street where you live girls talk about their social lives
They're made of lipstick, plastic and paint
A touch of sable in their eyes

All your life all you asked
When is your Daddy gonna talk to you
But we're living in another world
Tryin' to get your message through

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going around your head

    [Chorus:]
    Oh, she's a little Runaway
    Daddy's girl learned fast
All those things he couldn't say
    Ooh, she's a little runaway

    A different line every night
    Guaranteed to blow your mind
See you out on the streets
Call me for a wild time
    So you sit home alone
'Cause there's nothing left that you can do
There's only pictures hung in the shadows
Left there to look at you

You know she likes the lights
At night on the neon Broadway signs
    And she don't really mind
Its only love she hoped to find

    [Chorus]

No one heard a single word you said
They should have seen it in your eyes
What was going on your head

    [Chorus]

  • This was the first hit for Bon Jovi. Jon Bon Jovi wrote it in 1982 with early collaborator George Karak, and it was popular in the band's home state of New Jersey. Despite the success of this song, the band continued to struggle. They were a popular live act, but didn't make much money until they released Slippery When Wet two years later.
  • Jon Bon Jovi recorded this with studio musicians because he didn't have a band yet. The song broke nationally and Jon put the band together soon after.
  • This gained popularity when it was included on a compilation album of unsigned acts released by New Jersey radio station WDHA. Long Island radio station WAPP also put it on an annual CD of local bands.
  • Dave "the snake" Sabo played guitar on this. He went on to be the lead guitarist for the band Skid Row.
  • In a 1986 interview with Spin magazine, Jon Bon Jovi had some harsh words for this video. He said: "I hate videos. If you wanted to torture me you'd tie me down and force me to watch our first five videos. Five times you're chump before you learn what you're doing. The first time we'd just made a record and we were all excited and some a--hole decides we're going to make a video for 'Runaway.' So instead of making it about what the song's about, he decides to put a concept to it with his little niece in it. It's the worst piece of s--t I ever saw in my life. There's a girl with like fire coming out of her eyes. They dressed the band. Richie's wearing a jumpsuit and shoes that are three sizes too big. They kept squirting us down with this greasy solution to make it look like we were sweating. We all look like assholes."
  • A live version was used as the B-side of "Lay Your Hands On Me" in 1989.
  • Before performing this in 2003, Jon Bon Jovi introduced it by saying, "If you see this song down at the beach, buy it a drink - it's finally old enough."
  • Session musician Hugh McDonald played bass on this song. He played on Bon Jovi's early albums and replaced Alec John Such as Bon Jovi's bass player in 1994, although he is not considered an official member of the band. (thanks, Lee-Ann - Perth, Australia)

    You Are In Love Lyrics

    One look, dark room
    Meant just for you
    Time moved too fast
    You play it back
    Buttons on a coat
    Lighthearted joke
    No proof, not much
    But you saw enough
    Small talk, he drives
    Coffee at midnight
    The light reflects
    The chain on your neck
    He says look up
    And your shoulders brush
    No proof, one touch
    You felt enough

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You Are In Love, true love
    You are in love

    Morning, his place
    Burn toast, Sunday
    You keep his shirt
    He keeps his word
And for once you let go
Of your fears and your ghosts
    One step, not much
    But it said enough
    You kiss on sidewalks
    You fight and you talk
    One night he wakes
    Strange look on his face
    Pauses, then says
    You're my best friend
And you knew what it was
    He is in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love

    And so it goes
You two are dancing in a snow globe round and round
And he keeps the picture of you in his office downtown
And you understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars
And why I've spent my whole life trying to put it into words

'Cause you can hear it in the silence
You can feel it on the way home
You can see it with the lights out
You are in love, true love
    You're in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home
You can see it with the lights out, lights out
You are in love, true love
    You're in love

You can hear it in the silence, silence
You can feel it on the way home, way home

  • Taylor wrote this song with Jack Antonoff using the relationship that the fun. guitarist and his girlfriend Lena Dunham have as her inspiration. "You guys are like the benchmark of actual, real true love," she commented to him during a MTV interview.
  • Lena Dunham dubbed this her "someday wedding song." Apparently the Girls creator didn't know the tune was inspired by her when she said that.
  • Asked by Elle magazine about the song's lyric "You're my best friend," Swift replied: "I've never had that, so I wrote that song about things that Lena [Dunham] has told me about her and Jack [Antonoff]. That's just basically stuff she's told me. And I think that that kind of relationship - God, it sounds like it would just be so beautiful - would also be hard. It would also be mundane at times."

Oswald and his sister are doing it again
They've got the finest home movies that you have ever seen
They've got a thousand variations, every service with a smile
They're gonna take a little break and they'll be back after a while
Well, I hear that South America is coming into style

    [Chorus:]

A pistol was still smoking, a man lay on the floor
Mr. Oswald said he had an understanding with the law
He said he heard about a couple living in the USA
He said they traded in their baby for a Chevrolet
Let's talk about the future, now we've put the past away

    [Chorus:]
    Hey, oo hey-ey
    Hey, oo hey-ey...

    Less Than Zero Song Chart
  • This is a scathing attack on Oswald Mosley, a politician who was popular in England at the time. Mosley, who died in 1980, was the leader of the British Union of Fascists.
  • This was Costello's first single - it was only issued in Europe. At the time, he had a day job working on a computer at Elizabeth Arden cosmetics.
  • According to Dave Marsh's The Heart of Rock and Soul, The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever , the song is about a young couple making out in one of their parents' houses, while 1930s British fascist leader Oswald Moseley and his sister babble poison on TV, angling for a comeback in the era of the National Front.
  • American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis named his first novel, the nihilistic, drug-fuelled Less Than Zero after this song. He told the NME August 7, 2010: "Why did I name my first book after an Elvis Costello song? Who knows? I was working on this project starting when I was 16 and it was the Less Than Zero project. I was like most white, upper-class educated boys: I was obsessed with Elvis Costello. That was his main audience in the US. That title seemed very evocative to me. It had various other titles, but Less Than Zero ultimately seemed like the best title for the book, even though I had this much older professor who really loved the book but tried to dissuade me from using that title because he thought it was lame. He suggested Winter Vacation. Elvis Costello became the man for me for very many years. And then he didn't. Which happens, it happens to a lot of people, it's just the nature of things. Very few people sustain massive careers for a long time."
  • When he recorded the My Aim Is True album, Costello had not yet formed his backing band The Attractions, so he used members of an American group called Clover as his musicians:

    John McFee - guitar
    Sean Hopper - keyboards
    Johnny Ciambotti - bass
    Mickey Shine - drums
    Stan Shaw - organ

Clover disbanded in 1978; McFee joined The Doobie Brothers and Hopper formed Huey Lewis and the News.
  • When Costello appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1977 (filling in for the Sex Pistols, who were denied entry into the US), it was decided that he would perform this song. Elvis, however, had other ideas. After playing some of "Less Than Zero," he halted the performance and played the unreleased "Radio Radio" instead, earning him a ban from the show that lasted until 1989, when he returned as musical guest.

Costello had no interest in playing "Less Than Zero" for an American audience (especially on a late-night comedy show), since its subject matter was decidedly English.
  • Like "Watching The Detectives," this song has reggae overtones. Costello was influenced by the first Clash album, which used a lot of reggae sounds.

Oh baby let me be, your lovin' teddy bear
Put a chain around my neck, and lead me anywhere
Oh let me be (oh let him be)
    Your teddy bear

I don't want to be your tiger
    Cause tigers play too rough
I don't want to be your lion
Cause lions ain't the kind you love enough

I just want to be, your teddy bear
Put a chain around my neck and lead me anywhere
Oh let me be (oh let him be)
    Your teddy bear

Baby let me be, around you every night
Run your fingers through my hair
    And cuddle me real tight
Oh let me be (oh let him be)
    Your teddy bear

I don't want to be your tiger
    Cause tigers play too rough
I don't want to be your lion

  • This was written by Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe for Elvis Presley's second feature film, Loving You. The song, backed with the film's title track, would top the pop charts the day before the movie's release, where it stayed for seven weeks. The songwriters took advantage of Elvis's accidental reputation as a teddy-bear lover after a false rumor of his penchant for the stuffed animals spread to his fans, who promptly flooded him with hordes of cuddly pals. The day after Christmas, he donated the collection of thousands to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis.
  • This song showed a side of The King that was more sweet than sexy, perhaps a bid to tone down his swivel-hipped invitation to sin that scandalized the censors of the time.
  • The sitcom Full House occasionally featured this as a lullaby for the character Michelle, performed by Elvis fanatic Uncle Jesse (John Stamos) with Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) and Joey Gladstone (Dave Coulier). The guys later reunited as their characters on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and sang the song to comfort the host about his departure from the talk show.
  • Aside from dominating the pop charts, this also topped the R&B Best Sellers List and the country charts.
  • Country singer Tanya Tucker covered this for her Elvis tribute album It's Now or Never in 1994. ZZ Top also included it on their 30th anniversary album, XXX, in 1999.
  • This was featured in the 1989 Jerry Lee Lewis biopic Great Balls of Fire!, starring Dennis Quaid in the title role, with Michael St. Gerard as Elvis. It was also used in the 1998 fantasy Pleasantville, starring Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon.

    Born To Be Wild Lyrics

    Get your motor runnin'
    Head out on the highway
    Lookin' for adventure
    And whatever comes our way
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space

    I like smoke and lightning
    Heavy metal thunder
    Racin' with the wind
And the feelin' that I'm under
Yeah Darlin' go make it happen
Take the world in a love embrace
Fire all of your guns at once
    And explode into space

    Like a true nature's child
We were born, Born To Be Wild
    We can climb so high
    I never want to die

    Born to be wild

    • With the line "Heavy Metal Thunder," this became the first popular song to use the phrase "Heavy Metal," which became a term for hard rock. William Burroughs is credited with coining the phrase, as he used it in his 1961 novel The Soft Machine, describing his character Uranian Willy as "the Heavy Metal Kid." Burroughs told The Paris Review: "I felt that heavy metal was sort of the ultimate expression of addiction, that there's something actually metallic in addiction, that the final stage reached is not so much vegetable as mineral."
    • This was used in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, a counterculture classic starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda as bikers who ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Another Steppenwolf song, "The Pusher," was also used in the film.
When the movie was in production, this was simply a placeholder, since Fonda wanted Crosby, Stills and Nash to do the soundtrack. It became clear that the song belonged in the movie, and it stayed. Partly because of it's use in Easy Rider, this has become the song most associated with motorcycles.
    • This was written by Mars Bonfire, which is the stage name of Dennis Edmonton. He wasn't a member of Steppenwolf, but his brother Jerry was the band's drummer. Bonfire wrote a few other songs for Steppenwolf as well, including "Ride With Me" and "Tenderness."
Explaining how he came up with the song, Bonfire said: "I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day and saw a poster in a window saying 'Born to Ride' with a picture of a motorcycle erupting out of the earth like a volcano with all this fire around it. Around this time I had just purchased my first car, a little secondhand Ford Falcon. So all this came together lyrically: the idea of the motorcycle coming out along with the freedom and joy I felt in having my first car and being able to drive myself around whenever I wanted. 'Born To Be Wild' didn't stand out initially. Even the publishers at Leeds Music didn't take it as the first or second song I gave them. They got it only because I signed as a staff writer. Luckily, it stood out for Steppenwolf. It's like a fluke rather than an achievement, though."
    • This was the second single from Steppenwolf's first album. The first single, "Sookie Sookie," was a flop.
    • Frontman John Kay (from Rolling Stone magazine's "Top 500 Songs): "Every generation thinks they're born to be wild and they can identify with that song as their anthem." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
    • In an interview for CHMR FM, John Kay told Terry Parsons that when Mars Bonfire first introduced him to the song, it was intended as a folk ballad about life on the open road. Once Steppenwolf began working with the song, the tempo was increased, and an iconic rock and roll song resulted.
    • Movies this has been used in include Coming Home, One Crazy Summer, Opportunity Knocks, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Speechless.
    • This wasn't released in the UK until 1969.
    • In 1994, Ozzy Osbourne did a duet of this with Miss Piggy. It was released on an album called Kermit Unpigged, with featured rock stars singing with Muppets.
    • This has been covered by U2, Blue Oyster Cult, MC Shan, and The Cult. (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
    • In 2004, Paris Hilton asked Steppenwolf to use this as part of her show, The Simple Life 2. Steppenwolf adamantly denied. (thanks, Cody - new york city, NY)
    • Hinder recorded this in 2007 for TNT's coverage of NASCAR. It also appears on the re-release of Hinder's album Extreme Behavior.
    • This record was the regular finisher for rock group Slade in the 1970s and is one of the key tracks of their acclaimed Slade Alive! album, it also features on their early album Beginnings and the Slade Live at Reading EP. (thanks, Kim Wells - Aylesbury, United Kingdom)

I'm miles from what's in front of me

Feels like I'm chasing the road beneath my feet

    Don't Be Cruel Lyrics

You know I can be found
    Sitting home all alone
    If you can't come around
    At least please telephone
Don't Be Cruel to who a heart that's true

Baby, if I made you mad
For something I might have said
    Please, let's forget the past
    The future looks bright ahead
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
I don't want no other love
Baby it's just you I'm thinking of

    Don't stop thinking of me
Don't make me feel this way
Come on over here and love me
You know what I want you to say
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
    Why should we be apart?
I really love you baby, cross my heart

Let's walk up to the preacher
And let us say I do
Then you'll know you'll have me
And I'll know that I'll have you,
Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true
I don't want no other love,
Baby it's just you I'm thinking of

Don't be cruel to who a heart that's true

    Don't Be Cruel Song Chart
  • This was released as a single with "Hound Dog." It is the only single in history to have both sides reach #1 in the US. Joel Whitburn, who writes the definitive books on the subject , told the Forgotten Hits newsletter: "As far as the two-sided Presley hit 'Hound Dog" / "Don't Be Cruel,' I've always tabulated that single 45 as two #1 hits. 'Hound Dog' was the first title to chart and the first one to be listed as the lead #1 song. Billboard's 'Best Sellers in Stores' chart listed the the #1 song on 8/18/56 as 'Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel.' It was also shown that way when it first topped the 'Most Played in Juke Boxes' chart on 9/1/56. There is absolutely no doubt that the initial sales and 'buzz' about this record was for 'Hound Dog.' It was a smash #1 hit right out of the box. As airplay began to favor 'Don't Be Cruel,' the two titles were flip-flopped at #1, with 'Don't Be Cruel' actually showing more weeks as the #1 lead song. Again, I have always tabulated these two titles as two #1 songs. There is no way you can consider this 4-times platinum record as one #1 hit. And, neither does RIAA who awards gold and platinum selling records. They show 'Hound Dog' / 'Don't Be Cruel' as both receiving platinum designations."
  • This was written by Otis Blackwell, a songwriter who came up with a lot of hits for Elvis. In addition to this, he also wrote "Return to Sender," "All Shook Up," and "One Broken Heart for Sale" for Elvis. He also wrote "Fever," which was made famous by Peggy Lee, and "Great Balls Of Fire" for Jerry Lee Lewis. Blackwell died in 2002 at age 70. (thanks, Gary - Thetford, England)
  • On Christmas Eve 1955, Otis Blackwell found himself on the streets in front of the Brill Building in New York City trying to stay warm. Things weren't going well for Blackwell - it was raining and there were leaks in the soles of his shoes. His friend Leroy Kirkland walked by and asked Otis if he had written any more songs. Otis said yes. Over the next week, he sold 6 of them to a publishing company for $25 each. Management at The Brill Building liked him so much they offered him a full-time job writing, and Blackwell accepted. Not long after, Otis got some very good news: This up-and-coming rock star wanted to record one of his songs. The deal was, the guy wanted half the writer's fee. Otis said, "No way I'm gonna give up half that song." His friends convinced him that half of something was better than all of nothing. Besides, this new singer just might "make it" and if he did, Otis' royalties would be tremendous. Over the next few days, Otis agreed. It wasn't Elvis who wanted half the "writer's fee." It was his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The song became one of Elvis' biggest and longest running hits. (Thanks to the disc jockey, author and music historian Ron Foster.)
  • Cheap Trick covered this in 1988. Their version hit #4 in the US.
  • Elvis' bass player Bill Black released an instrumental version of this in 1960 which hit US #11.
  • This took only about 20 minutes to record.
  • The single was released in July 1956, but it did not appear on an album until the March 1958 release of Elvis' Golden Records.
  • This song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2002.

    Shattered God Lyrics

    Failure and apathy descend
Success just hasn't been your friend
You live a lie high as the sky
This taste like iron, blood and greed
Tell us of what you'll never be
I won't ask why, just let it die

    Sleeping tight in your insanity
    The truth could remedy

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the Shattered God

I try with every ounce of hell
To pry you open from your shell
    Twisting the knife
    Regretting your life
Your eyes are empty like your bed
Somehow you haven't wound up dead
    Chances passed by
    You'll never fly

Singing hymns about the sins you see
But you'll never hear from me

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the shattered god

Feel the embrace, all of the hate
    I have watched you fall
Finding your words sounding like silence
    You've already said it all

You stole it all, sold them your soul give it up
You are, you are forever alone
Casting your stones, give it up
You are, you are the shattered god
