Jennifer Eccles Lyrics

White chalk, written on red brick
Our love, told in a heart
It's there, drawn in the playground
Love, kiss, hate or adore

I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me
I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me

La la la la la la la
La la la la la la
La la la la la la la
La la la la la la

I used to carry her satchels
She used to walk by my side
But when we got to her doorstep
Her dad wouldn't let me inside

One Monday morning, found out I'd made the grade
Started me thinking, had she done the same?

I used to carry her satchels
She used to walk by my side
But when we got to her doorstep
Her dad wouldn't let me inside

I hope Jennifer Eccles
Is going to follow me there
Our love is bound to continue
Love, kiss, hate or adore
Singing

I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me
I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me

I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me
I love Jennifer Eccles
I know that she loves me

I used to carry her satchels
She used to walk by my side
But when we got to her doorstep,
Her dad wouldn't let me inside

    (Steve Walsh / Steve Morse)
You say it's time to stay behind
All I wanted was to hold you
All I wanted was to touch you

No need for blame cause we're not the same
All I wanted was to love you
    That's all I wanted

How many times will it take
Hurting me the way you do
How many times till I break
You're hurting me the way I'm loving you the way I do

It's not so strange for us to change
All I wanted was to love you that's all I wanted

How many times will it take
Hurting me the way you do

    All I Wanted Song Chart
  • What we have here is a power ballad by Kansas. The '80s was filled with rockers from the '70s who got on MTV and added keyboards to their mix (Yes, Chicago and Heart come to mind), but Kansas missed this train, scoring just minor hits in the video era with "Play The Game Tonight" (#17, 1982) and "All I Wanted."

This song is a classic heartbreak ballad, with lead singer Steve Walsh whinging over a breakup, telling the girl that all he wanted was to hold her, touch her, and love her. It was a giant leap from the classic Kansas sound of the previous decade, where they were known for intricate songs like "Carry On Wayward Son" and "Point Of Know Return." In the '00s, Kansas embraced their prog side by touring with Yes, but in 1989, their tourmates were Night Ranger.
  • This song was written by lead singer Steve Walsh and guitarist Steve Morse. Kansas broke up in 1983 after a poorly attended tour. Kerry Livgren, who was their original guitarist and composer of many of their most popular songs, formed his own band called AD, which recorded Christian rock. When the band got back together in 1986, Morse replaced Livgren, both as guitarist and songwriter.

Morse was a founding member of an eclectic group called The Dixie Dregs, and would later join Deep Purple. In our interview with Morse , he explained how this song came together. "It was mostly a Steve Walsh song that he had been trying to get to fit with Kansas for a couple of albums," he said. "I came in after that was mostly written, and thought, 'You know what? If we change this and this and put in this instrumental and then have this at the end of your phrase, we have that payoff with this guitar line, or do it as a string line, that that would be really cool.'

You know how when somebody walks in and you've been working on something, and they say, 'Hey, you moved this and this around. It'll work, definitely.' That's all I did."
  • The music video was a bricolage of black-and-white footage, close-ups of Steve Walsh, and some of the rotoscoping effects seen in the a-ha video for "Take On Me." Oddly, Walsh and Morse are the only band members who appear in the clip.

    1979 Lyrics

Shakedown 1979, cool kids never have the time
On a live wire right up off the street
    You and I should meet
June bug skipping like a stone
With the headlights pointed at the dawn
We were sure we'd never see an end to it all

And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

Double cross the vacant and the bored
They're not sure just what we have in the store
Morphine city slippin' dues, down to see that

We don't even care, as restless as we are
We feel the pull in the land of a thousand guilts
And poured cement, lamented and assured
To the lights and towns below
Faster than the speed of sound
Faster than we thought we'd go, beneath the sound of hope

    Justine never knew the rules
Hung down with the freaks and the ghouls
No apologies ever need be made
I know you better than you fake it, to see

And I don't even care to shake these zipper blues
And we don't know just where our bones will rest
    To dust I guess
Forgotten and absorbed into the earth below

The street heats the urgency of sound
As you can see there's no one around

  • Lead singer Billy Corgan wrote this about making the transition out of youth and into adulthood. He remembered being in high school and having adult responsibilities like a car and job, but still being very much a youth and dependent on his parents.
  • Corgan chose 1979 for the title because it rhymed with many of the words he wanted to use in the lyrics. (thanks, Susan - Scarsdale, MT)
  • Corgan (from VH1 Storytellers): "Sometimes, when I write a song, I see a picture in my head. For some reason, it's of the obscure memory I have." The memory that goes with this song is from when he was around 18 years old. He was driving down a road near his home on a rainy night, and was waiting at a traffic light. He says that the picture "emotionally connotes a feeling of waiting for something to happen, and not being quite there yet, but it's just around the corner."
  • This was the last song written for Mellon Collie. Corgan told the producer that he thought it had a lot of potential, so the producer gave Corgan 24 hours to make it work, or else it wouldn't be on the album. He went home that night and came up with the lyrics, and they recorded it the next day. (thanks, Peter - Greer, SC, for above 2)
  • Corgan had a version of this written long before it was released, but he didn't think it fit the mood of any of their previous albums.
  • The video took 3 days to shoot and included a scene where a bunch of kids are at a party, and Smashing Pumpkins are the house band. The original tape of this scene was lost after a crew member forgot that had placed it on top of his car and drove away. A new video was cobbled together with unused footage, plus new footage shot by the group. The production assistant who drove off without the tapes was sentenced to stand in the city center with a sandwich board that said: "Lost Tapes, reward for return" on it. (thanks, Alex - Oxford, England)
  • This was nominated for 2 Grammys - Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance.
  • Billy Corgan once joked, "We wrote this song for Michael Jackson, but found he couldn't do the Moonwalk to it." (thanks, BONES - New Plymouth, New Zealand)

  • The first song that Kentucky-born coal miner's daughter Angaleena Presley learned to play on the guitar was "Mama Tried" by Merle Haggard. It was her father who taught the song at the age of 15 and within a year or so Presley was penning her own material.
  • This was the first ever song Presley wrote. She recalled to American Songwriter magazine: "It was so awful. I was a senior in high school and I wrote a song called 'Fairy Tale Land.' It was about me venturing off into the world and leaving my fairy tale life behind. My mom liked it and encouraged me to write more. About 20 songs later I wrote something that made me think, "hmmm … this one might be kinda good."
  • Presley told CMT News she wrote this when she was 16-years-old. "It was about me moving away and going to college and leaving your parents," she explained. "It was awful. I would die if anyone heard it."

"It was no 'Honky Tonk Girl,' that's for sure," she added.

    Someday Never Comes Lyrics

First thing I remember was asking papa, why,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And daddy always smiled and took me by the hand,
    Saying, someday you'll understand.

    [Chorus]
Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
    'Cause Someday Never Comes.

Well, time and tears went by and I collected dust.
For there were many things I didn't know.
When daddy went away, he said, try to be a man,
    And someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
    'Cause someday never comes.

And then one day in April, I wasn't even there,
For there were many things I didn't know.
A son was born to me. Mama held his hand,
    Sayin' someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
    'Cause someday never comes
    Ooo someday never comes.

Think it was September, the year I went away,
For there were many things I didn't know.
And still I see him standing, tryin' to be a man,
    I said, someday you'll understand.

Well, I'm here to tell you now, each and every mother's son,
That you better learn it fast, you better learn it young,
    'Cause someday never comes

  • This was CCR's last Top 40 single, and was also the last single to be released while the group existed. "Someday Never Comes" (#25 in 1972) described the singer's self-consolation as he tries to accept the breakup of a marriage and loss of access to his son. It was painfully clear that John Fogerty was referring to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

  • John Fogerty: "Every parent tells their child 'someday.' 'Gee, daddy, can we go fishing?' 'Yeah, someday.' My parents divorced when I was young and I ended up divorcing from my first wife. The song is basically me talking about how it happened to me when I was young and here I go doing the same damn thing. It's sad. I wanted to express what a kid feels, 'Someday Never Comes.' I don't ever tell you how I really feel
'Cause I can't find the words to say what I mean
    And nothing's ever easy
    That's what they say
I know I'm not your only
But I'll still be a fool
'Cause I'm a fool for you

    I know I'm not, you're only
    But at least I'm one
I heard a little love is better than none

Speaking during her MTV special, Total Ariana Live, the "Problem" singer recalled: "He was just visiting the studio and (producers) Savan (Kotecha) and Johan (Carlsson) were like 'Hey do you wanna write a song for Ariana?' and he was like 'Oh sure!'"

"He went into the other room and they were writing for a while and I remember when I heard it I was like 'Wow that's a really strong verse, that's really beautiful' and then the pre, I was like 'wow that's a really beautiful pre, that's a really strong pre!' and then the chorus I was like crying! So it's great. I'm really excited, obviously for his fans to hear it as well 'cause they were very excited when they heard (about it)."
  • Harry Styles told Digital Spy that he likes writing from a different perspective, adding, "it's fun to write a song as a girl."

Have You Ever Seen The Rain? Lyrics

    Someone told me long ago
There's a calm before the storm
I know; it's been comin' for some time.
When it's over so they say
    It'll rain a sunny day
I know; shinin' down like water.

    [Chorus]
    I want to know
Have You Ever Seen The Rain?
    I want to know
Have you ever seen the rain
Comin' down on a sunny day?

    Yesterday and days before
Sun is cold and rain is hard
I know; been that way for all my time.
    'Til forever, on it goes
Through the circle, fast and slow,
    I know; it can't stop, I wonder.

    [Chorus]

    Yeah!

Have You Ever Seen The Rain? Song Chart
  • This song is John Fogerty's take on the imminent departure of his brother Tom from the band, and the overall tension in the group at a time when they should have been enjoying their success. The line, "I want to know - have you ever seen the rain comin' down on a sunny day?" refers to Tom leaving while CCR was at its commercial zenith. The flip side of this single, "Hey Tonight," is John reassuring the band that all would go well despite the adversity.

Tom Fogerty left the group in early 1971, after this album was released. He released three solo albums before dying of tuberculosis in 1990. A fourth album, completed in 1988, was released posthumously.
  • According to John Fogerty, this song's meaning changed for him over time. Introducing the song at a 2012 show in Arizona, he said: "This song was originally written about a very sad thing that was going on in my life. But I refuse to be sad now. Because now this song reminds me of my little girl, Kelsy, and every time I sing it, I think about Kelsy and rainbows."

Fogerty added that this is his all-time favorite song, even though it's one he wrote himself.
  • Musically, this song was inspired by the group Booker T. & the MG's, whose most famous song is "Green Onions." They opened for Creedence Clearwater Revival before CCR recorded the Pendulum album. John Fogerty loved the sound of Booker T. Jones' Hammond organ, so he used it on some tracks for the album, including this one.
  • John Fogerty did almost all the overdubs for the band until the Pendulum album, when other members contributed. Their bass player Stu Cook played some of the piano on this track.
  • According to Stu Cook, this song and another track on the album, "Pagan Baby," were written and rehearsed from scratch during one recording session. "Pagan Baby" was done in one take."
  • This was used in the TV show Tour Of Duty, which was set in Vietnam during the war. (thanks, Brian - Shaker Heights, OH)
  • Bonnie Tyler covered this song for her 1983 blockbuster album Faster Than the Speed of Night. Her version reached #47 in the UK. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • In 2006, Rod Stewart covered this song on his album Still the Same... Great Rock Classics of Our Time. (thanks, Talena - Arcata, CA)
  • Allison Moorer covered this for her 2015 Down To Believing album. She explained why to Billboard magazine: "The record label wanted me to do a cover. I said 'I don't really think the record needs a cover on it,' and we certainly have enough songs, but in the spirit of being cooperative, I said 'OK, if you really want one, I'll come up with something.'"

"If I was going to do a cover, it was going to be something that I had always wanted to do," she continued. "I'm a huge Creedence fan, and that song might be my very favorite song of theirs. I've always thought it was the perfect country / rock song, and this record to me is a country / rock record, so I thought 'If I'm ever going to this, this is the perfect time. I think what you hear on the record is actually the second take."

Ever since you left me I've been ridin' 'round
Crankin' up a little country gold heartbreak
Cried and dried these tears I don't know how
Much more missin' you I can take
I pray pray prayed, for a sign sign sign
Now there it is in the window
    It's about time, damn time

There’s a Neon Light at the end of the tunnel
It ain’t all that bright, but even though it’s subtle
It’s got me feeling alright, go on and make it a double
There’s a neon light at the end of the tunnel, tunnel, tunnel

I take a shot of 'I don't care what you doing now'
Chase that one with a cold 'Screw you'
When that's done, I just might wash it down
With a big pitcher of 'Someone new'
    That blond blonde blonde
    At the bar bar bar
See if she wants to try and unbreak my heart heart heart

There’s a neon light at the end of the tunnel
It ain’t all that bright, but even though it’s subtle
It’s got me feeling alright, go on and make it a double
There’s a neon light at the end of the tunnel, tunnel, tunnel

    When we were together
I thought life was set forever
Even though I knew better that the pain would never end
They say the night's darkest just before the dawn gets kissed
By the daybreak got down on my knees and I
Prayed, prayed, prayed, for a sign, sign, sign
Now there it is in the window
    It's about time, damn time

There’s a neon light at the end of the tunnel
It ain’t all that bright, but even though it’s subtle

  • Brad Paisley penned this female-empowerment song sung from a guy's perspective on his own. He explained to Billboard magazine that he wrote the mid-tempo ballad for his wife, actress Kimberly Williams-Paisley. "I have so much respect for her and what she does," said Paisley. "And I've watched her as she's ventured into new territory as she's been a leading voice for Alzheimer's research because of her mother's illness and she's been working on a new project that I've been helping her with."

"We've been taking some meetings in Los Angeles together," he continued. "It's the closest I've been to seeing what it feels like when a woman walks in a room with big dreams and a disadvantage being a woman. I don't mean it to sound like women are disadvantaged, but it's true that in our society we still have a ways to go, but we're better than it's ever been."

"This song is supposed to be a pep talk to her and any woman who has dreams she wants to achieve," Paisley added, "and thinks to herself 'This might not be something a woman like me can do.' Not true. Go do it! It's meant to be a total vote of confidence and love song in that sense. It's basically [saying] 'I believe in you!'"
  • Paisley also wrote the song for an imaginary character. "The fictional character I wrote it for is our daughter who does not exist," he explained. "What song would I write for my daughter? It would be this exact song."
  • The song's lyric video was premiered on the August 20, 2014 episode of Ellen DeGeneres' talk show. Paisley tweeted just before the clip's debut: "Ladies, my favorite song on this album is about my belief that the sky's the limit for you. But I don't want to be the one to present it..."

Some folks are born, made to wave the flag
Ooo, their red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
Ooo, they point the cannon at you, Lord

    It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no

    Yeah, yeah
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes
Ooh, they send you down to war, Lord
And when you ask 'em, "How much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer "More! More! More!", y'all

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son

    Fortunate Son Song Chart
  • This is an antiestablishment song of defiance and blue-collar pride, both anti-Washington and against the Vietnam War. John Fogerty and Doug Clifford both enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1966 (to avoid being drafted and shipped to Vietnam) and were discharged in 1968 after serving their military commitments. "The song speaks more to the unfairness of class than war itself," Fogerty said. "It's the old saying about rich men making war and poor men having to fight them."
  • This is one of three political songs on the Willy And The Poorboys album. The others were "It Came From the Sky" and "Don't Look Now (It Ain't You or Me)."
  • Richard Nixon was president of the US when group leader John Fogerty wrote this song. Fogerty was not a fan of Nixon and felt that people close to the president were receiving preferential treatment.
  • This song spoke out against the war in Vietnam, but was supportive of the soldiers fighting there. Like many CCR fans, most of the soldiers came from the working class, and were there because they didn't have connections who could get them out. The song is sung from the perspective of one of these men, who ends up fighting because he is not a "Senator's son."
  • Creedence performed this on The Ed Sullivan Show, probably because the show's producers didn't realize it was a protest song. The show tried hard not to offend anyone, and usually had bands perform their least controversial songs or alter the lyrics for the show (see "Let's Spend The Night Together" and "Light My Fire").
  • Fogerty recorded a bunch of vocal takes for "Down On The Corner" before singing this. As a result, his voice was strained, which he thinks is apparent on the song.
  • This is one of those songs that came together very quickly. Fogerty recalled to American Songwriter magazine in January 2013: "When I felt it was about ready to hatch, I went into my bedroom and just sat down to write. The whole thing happened in about 20 minutes. That just poured out."
  • Like Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The U.S.A.," this is often misinterpreted as a patriotic anthem, when it is the opposite.
  • Wrangler jeans used this in commercials in 2001. They used only the first two lines: "Some folks are born, made to wave the flag, Ooh, that red, white and blue," implying the patriotic misinterpretation. The next lines are: "And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief" Ooh, they're pointin' the cannon at you," but those lyrics would not sell jeans very well.
  • Fogerty does not own the publishing rights to this song. He lost them, along with all the other songs he wrote for CCR, in his contract with Fantasy Records, which the band signed when they were struggling. Fantasy's boss at the time, Saul Zaentz, controls the rights and can use the songs any way he wants, as long as it isn't performed by any member of CCR. Fogerty hates that his song is constantly misused, but has no choice. He expressed this frustration on his solo track "Vanz Kant Danz."
  • This has been covered by U2, Bruce Springsteen, Kid Rock, Dropkick Murphys, Sleater-Kinney, Corrosion Of Conformity, Minutemen, Uncle Tupelo, Bob Seger, Circle Jerks, Joe Lynn Turner, Bunny Foot Charm, Death Cab For Cutie, Undead, Raccoon, and 38 Special.
  • When interviewed by Rolling Stone magazine, John Fogerty was asked: "What inspired 'Fortunate Son'?" His response: "Julie Nixon was hanging around with David Eisenhower, and you just had the feeling that none of these people were going to be involved with the war. In 1969, the majority of the country thought morale was great among the troops, and like eighty percent of them were in favor of the war. But to some of us who were watching closely, we just knew we were headed for trouble." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada, for above 2)
  • Wyclef Jean's slow, passionate cover of this was the theme song for the 2004 political thriller The Manchurian Candidate. Another popular political film from the summer of '04 was the controversial documentary Fahrenheit 9/11, of which John Fogerty remarked: "With the Michael Moore movie, certain conservative talk show hosts call him un-American. Him and anybody else who says anything about the war... To question your country's policy, especially in a war that kills people, is definitely not un-American. It's probably the most patriotic thing you can do." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • This is one of the first protest songs that makes the point that it's the poor who are most likely to fight the wars. During the Iraq war, System Of A Down covered this topic with their song "B.Y.O.B.."
  • Former United States president George W. Bush is often considered a "Fortunate Son," as he reaped the benefits that came with growing up in a powerful political family, which may have helped him avoid combat. This is covered in a book called Fortunate Son . (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • On November 6, 2014, Fogerty performed this at the White House as part of the A Salute to the Troops concert that was broadcast the next day on PBS ahead of Veteran's Day. Fogerty wasn't sure how the song would be received at an event honoring military personnel, but it got a great reaction from the crowd, including many of the veterans and President Obama.

American Flag on the Moon Song Chart
  • Paisley invites Americans to dream big again on this song, because, "I mean, after all, there's an American flag on the moon." The track was inspired by the singer's five-year-old son, Jasper. Paisley explained to Billboard magazine: "He looked up at the sky - after he heard about the moon landing - and squinted and said, 'I think I can see the flag.' My wife thought that was the cutest thing ever. What a great thing for the kid to say!"

"It stuck with me for a while and I started thinking about watching the news and all the negatives," Paisley continued. "The naysayers saying, 'We're going down the tubes,' and all of that as a country and thought to myself, 'Why can't we just be proud to be Americans?' In spite of everything that's wrong, let's be proud of what we've done so far, and maybe that's the trick to figuring out the future is looking back a little bit."

"The phrase just caught my attention," he concluded. "After all, there's an American flag on the moon. To me, that's mind-blowing to think about that that thing is sitting up there 45 years."
  • The song was leaked on August 16, 2014 when Paisley sent the tune to NASA astronaut Reid Weisman on the International Space Station, while standing at Florida's Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39B.
  • Brad Paisley is accompanied on the song by Mrs. King's Class At Montessori Academy's Children's Chorus.
