You were smart, you played no part
You just taught what you thought, yeah

And I remember when you walked out of Garden State
'Cause you had taste, you had taste
You had no time to waste

Oh, what happened to you kid?
Yes and oh, what's happening now?

  • This was the first song written by Spoon after taking four years off to let each member explore other projects. Frontman Britt Danielle recalled to Q magazine: "I brought us back together. I called them to find out whether there would write some music, which I would sing on top of. They came out with an amazing song, 'Outlier' which I just loved from the beginning."

    What a Fool Believes Lyrics

He came from somewhere back in her long ago
    The sentimental fool don't see
    Trying hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life

    She musters a smile
    For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
    Only to realize
    It never really was

    [Chorus]
She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
    Anybody else would surely know
    He's watching her go

But What a Fool Believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him

Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
    Someday, somewhere, she will return

    [Chorus]

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
    What seems to be
    Is always better than nothing
    There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees

What a Fool Believes Song Chart
  • Kenny Loggins co-wrote this with Doobie Brothers lead singer Michael McDonald. Loggins put his version on his album Nightwatch, which was released in July 1978, five months before The Doobies included it on their Minute by Minute album. Loggins' version was never released as a single, but The Doobie Brothers took it to #1 in the US in April 1979.
  • This won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. The album won a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. These were the only Grammys the band ever won.
  • Producer Ted Templeman described this as a "floppy record" and wanted a "floppy feel" for the percussion. So he played drums alongside drummer Keith Knudson "to get the feeling right." They had been recording the song for five or six straight days when he made this decision.
  • This was the band's second US #1, after "Black Water." The Doobie Brothers took on a different sound when they lost lead singer Tom Johnston due to illness in the mid-'70s. Instead of the album rock they were known for, they had more of a soft rock sound with Michael McDonald as lead singer. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Michael McDonald wrote the original version of this song. He presented a fragment of it to Templeman, who encouraged him to continue working on it. Kenny Loggins came in when McDonald got stuck on the bridge of the song. Bassist Tiran Porter had suggested Loggins to McDonald because the two were good friends.
  • McDonald's concept for the lyric was a scenario where two people meet in a restaurant - two people who had a passionate relationship long ago. To the man, the affair was the best thing in his life; to the woman, it was fun, but it was time to move on. In the conversation, the man makes a complete fool of himself. When the woman excuses herself to leave, he doesn't get the message, believing he still has a shot and that their affair was much more meaningful than it actually was. Love makes a man a fool, and even a wise one can't reason it away.
  • While he was waiting for Loggins to arrive at his home, McDonald played some of the songs that were "in progress" and asked his sister Maureen which she thought was best. As Loggins was getting out of his car, he heard McDonald playing a fragment of this. According to Loggins, he heard about three-quarters of the verse's melody (no lyrics), but McDonald stopped at the bridge. Loggins' mind continued without a break... and the song's bridge was born. Then Loggins knocked on the door, introduced himself to McDonald, and demonstrated the bridge that he devised before the two of them could sit down. The lyrics were finished over the telephone the next day.
  • Minute by Minute was the only #1 album the band ever had. It went to #1 in the US but didn't even chart in the UK.
  • The Doobies used an analog synthesizer called a Sequential Circuits Prophet-5 on this song.
  • This was the 500th #1 song of the Rock era (taken from when "Rock Around The Clock" by Bill Haley topped the US singles chart in 1955).

  • Frontman Sam McTrusty and his bandmates penned this song for Twin Atlantic's Great Divide album back in 2011. He told The Sun: "There is a massive difference between those and the last songs I wrote for the album. 'Brothers and Sisters' was the first song we wrote for the album and 'Heart And Soul' was the last – they are polar opposites. That's a good indication of what has happened."

    Three Little Pigs Lyrics

Why don't you, sit right back,
And I, I may tell you, a tale.
A tale of three, little pigs,
    And a big, bad, wolf.

Well the first little piggy, well he was kinda hip.
He spent most of his days, just a dreaming of the city.
And then one day, he bought a guitar.
He moved to Hollywood, to become a star.
But, living on the farm, he knew nothing of the city.
Built his house out of straw, what a pity.
And then one day, jamming on some chords,
Along came the wolf, knocking on his door.

Little Pig, Little Pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Little Pig, little pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Well I'm huffing, I'm puffing, I'll blow your house in.
Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!

Well the second little piggy, well he was kinda stoked.
He spent most of his time just a ganga smoking.
Huffing and a puffin down on Venice Beach.
Getting paid money for religious speech.
He built his shelter from what he garbage picked.
Mostly made up of old cans and sticks.
Then one day he was cranking out Bob Marley,
And along came the Wolf on his big bad Harley.

Well the third little piggy, the grade A student.
His daddy was a rock star, named Pig Nugent.
Earned his Masters Degree, from Harvard College.
Built his house from his architect knowledge.
    A tri-level mansion, Hollywood Hills.
Daddy's rock stardom, paid for the bills.
And then one day came the old house smasher
The big bad wolf, the little piggy slasher.

Little Pig, Little Pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Little Pig, little pig, let me in.

Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing, puffin, blow your house in.
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!

    Well the big bad Wolf,
Well he huffed, and he puffed, all that he could.
And low and behold the little piggy's house stood.
"It's made out of concrete!" The little piggy shouted.
The wolf just frowned, as he pouted.
So they called nine-eleven, like any piggy would.
The sent out Rambo, just as fast, as they could.

"Yo, wolf-face, I'm your worst nightmare, your ass is mine!"

Well the wolf fell dead as you can plainly see.
That's to end the story, for you and me.
If you still give a listen, you just may,
Here the big wolf or little piggy say.

Little Pig, Little Pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!
Little Pig, little pig, let me in.
Not by the hair of my chinny, chin, chin!

Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!
Huffing and a puffin and I'll blow your house in!

"And the moral of the story is,
A band with no talent can easily amuse
Idiots, with a stupid, puppet show."

    Three Little Pigs Song Chart
  • This, and all the other songs on the album, were all first released on video in 1992. They all had videos accompanying the songs, and it could not be purchased in a music-only format. Because of this, the band billed itself as the world's first video-only band, even though they had released an EP and some singles before the video.
  • The video for this song features a clay-animated reenactment of the fairy tale about the Three Little Pigs. The song tells a distorted version of the classic children's story, with the first two pigs living a slacker lifestyle and the third a very successful pig who summons Rambo to kill the wolf.
  • This features a Beastie Boys-style rap as it tries to parody early attempts at combining rap and rock. Green Jelly was a novelty rap/rock outfit, and this was their only hit.
  • Maynard James Keenan and Danny Carey both were members of Green Jelly before forming Tool. Keenan sings the pig part on this song: "Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin."
  • The group was called Green Jello when this was first released, the name chosen to reflect both the hate the band had for that flavor and the sound they made. They had to change it to Green Jelly after General Foods, the owner of the Jello brand, demanded a name change.
  • The video was directed by Fred Stuhr, who also worked with Tool. He died in a car accident in 1997.

No matter what the weather, we be getting our cheddar
So we can have a better tomorrow
Oh, money, cars, superstars, getting ours, working hard
    For a better tomorrow

Coach, put me in the game
I'm for real, other peoples tryna to put me in them chains
Whatever the topic, let's put it in the frame
We can even load it and cock it and put it in they brains
I'm saying, some rappers do it for a chain
Kill yourself, I know killers that'll do it for some change
These veterans is slipping, they ain't doing it the same
I don't slip, set a pick and put a shooter in your lane
Precise, 'bout shoot them at the range
But I ain't tryna shoot it with you rappers, I'll just shoot it at your dame
Y'all never should have threw me in the game
Found a new word for weed, that was so mean
I threw it in my name

My soul laid out on the block like arms spraying
The law hating, warring like Blacks and Caucasians
God versus Satan, I'm laying in the dark
With the Mossberg, waiting, letting off first basing
Slim from the cotton club washing a scrub
Deuce high when he cruise by, spotting his love
Hold the mic like a .38 muzzle to snub
This flow, call it OJ blood on the glove
Above rap, capital G's speak on the facts
Please believe that, meaning that I keep it a stack
He's back, he a beast on the track
The only time that I go soft is probably with your freak in the sack
Feel the bass make sure he shake
    Murder verse, first forty-eight

Dry mouth, grinding back and forth plus he's steaming a Newport

I used to be so narcissistic, park the whip and spark the biscuits
Spit hollow tipped shells at the Narcs with quickness
Live to tell the tale, 'cause only God's my witness
Been a long time, change gonna come son, I'm optimistic
I hold the steel like Ron O'Neal
Super fly, do or die, killer hill, Brownsville
Never win, never will, yes I can, yes I will
Put a dot upon your knot then I drill through your grill
Like a dentist, my apprentice speaks with a vengeance
Demented scientists counting bodies in the trenches
That's judges off the benches, got inches for y'all wenches
We plant those hot seeds then drove in cold winters

No matter what the weather, we be getting that cheddar

  • The first single from Wu Tang Clan's A Better Tomorrow album, this takes its name from the late actor who played coke dealer Youngblood Priest in the 1972 Blaxploitation classic Super Fly. RZA compares himself to Ron O'Neal in his verse when the rapper declares that he will win just like O'Neal's Super Fly character does at the end of the movie.
  • The entire Wu-Tang Clan performed the song on the August 6, 2014 episode of The Daily Show. "I think we've been so blessed to have the same job for the past 21 years and not hurt nobody doing it," Method Man said about their performance. "As soon as we came together for one common cause, we knew that what we were doing was something different and something great. And it showed and proved in the end."

    Rod Stewart

Through these misty eyes I see lonely skies
    Lonely road to Babylon
    Where's my family
    And my country
    heaven knows where I belong

    Pack my bags tonight
    Here's one Jacobite
Who must leave or surely die
    Put me on a train
In the pouring rain say farewell
    but don't say goodbye

Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, that's where I want to be
    Every beat of my heart
    Tears me further apart
I'm lost and alone in the dark
    I'm going home

    One more glass of wine
    Just for auld lang syne
And the girl I left behind
How I miss her now In my darkest hour
And the way our arms entwine

Seagull carry me, over land and sea
To my own folk, that's where I want to be
    Every beat of my heart
    Tears me further apart
I'm lost and alone in the dark
    I'm going home

    And we'll drink a toast
    To the blood red rose
    Cheer a while the
    Emerald Isle
    And to the northern lights
    And the swirling pipes
How they make a grown man cry

Seagull carry me, over land and sea

  • This song was originally recorded by Johnny Otis in 1952. Knight recorded it for local label Huntom Records, then had singles on 2 other labels sink without a trace, before having their fortunes change in a most unusual way. With Dave "Baby" Cortez, who had a #1 hit with "The Happy Organ" in 1959 playing on organ, they re-recorded this for Fury Records. As the new version, credited to "Gladys Knight & The Pips," started climbing the charts, Vee Jay Records bought the original from Huntom and issued it credited to "Pips." Eventually, the original Vee Jay single hit #6 as the newer Fury single stalled at #45.

    We will get the thumbscrews

    Leave a great big hole

In our interview with Yow , he explained that the landlord started out "a really, really swell guy," but he quickly turned on him. "He went from being kind of a friend to an enemy," Yow said. "That song and 'Good Riddance,' which was also on the same record, were written about that guy."

I can't stop drinking about you
    I gotta numb the pain
I can't stop drinking about you
Without you I ain't the same
So pour a shot in my glass and I'll forget forever! (Wow oh)
So pour a shot in my glass 'cause it makes everything better! (Wow oh)

I can't stop drinking about you (Drinking about you)
I can't stop drinking about you (Drinking about you) (Without you I ain't the same)

No one's gonna love you like I do (I do, do, do, do, do, do)

I can't stop drinking about you (Drinking about you)
I can't stop drinking about you (Drinking about you) (Without you I ain't the same)
So pour a shot in my glass and I'll forget forever! (Forever)
So pour a shot in my glass 'cause it makes everything better! (Wow)

No one's gonna love you like I do

  • Staten Island native Bebe Rexha's first exposure in the music business came when she was chosen to be the frontwoman for Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's project, Black Cards.

Rexha went on to find success in as a songwriter, most notably in 2013 co-penning Eminem and Rihanna's chart-topper "The Monster." That same year she featured with EDM group Cash Cash on their single "Take Me Home," which peaked at #57 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is the first single from her debut album.
  • The song came to Rexha while she was drowning her sorrows after a breakup with some shots at Johnny Utah's country bar in New York. "I just wrote it about a guy who didn't know if he wanted to be with me or his ex, so he told me that he couldn't be with me because he didn't want to make a mistake," the New York native explained to MTV News. "So he treated me like an option, so I left him like a choice."

"He actually called me to back pedal and to say he was sorry for all of the things he said to me and then I just told him to eff himself and that I was drinking about him," Rexha added. "I went back into the bar and then I was like, 'oh, that's a really good song title.' So I texted it to myself and then 'I Can't Stop Drinking About You' came to life."
  • The music video draws inspiration from Angelina Jolie's sociopath character in Girl, Interrupted and Kirsten Dunst's portrait of a severely depressed woman in Melancholia.

Rexha recalled to MTV News. "It has a lot of slow-motion in it, some underwater scenes that took a day to do and I like swallowed a whole bunch of water, and the chlorine burned my nose and they told me to shut up and go back into the pool and my lashes were coming off and the makeup artist was, like, yelling at me like, 'gosh, your lashes are falling off.'"

    Lucille Lyrics

Lucille, you won't do your sister's will?
Oh, Lucille, you won't do your sister's will?
You ran off and married, but I love you still

Lucille, please, come back where you belong
Lucille, please, come back where you belong
I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone

I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight
I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight
Lucille, please, come back where you belong
I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone, whoa

I woke up this morning, Lucille was not in sight
I asked my friends about her but all their lips were tight
Lucille, please, come back where you belong
I been good to you, baby, please, don't leave me alone

    Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart
    Lucille, baby, satisfy my heart
I played for it, baby, and gave you such a wonderful start

  • This song began as a ballad Richard wrote called "Directly From My Heart to You," which he recorded as a member of The Johnny Otis band in 1955. "Directly From My Heart to You" was released by Peacock Records as a B-side, and when Little Richard recorded for Specialty Records in September, 1955, he tried recording the song for his first album. It didn't make the cut, but Richard's career took off, and when he needed another single in 1957, he revived the song, but gave it the sound that made him a star, speeding up the tempo considerably.

The lyrics were completely rewritten, and Richard went to a common theme for his hits: a girl's name. If Lucille was based on a real woman who broke Richard's heart, he isn't saying - he told Rolling Stone in 1970: "I don't know what inspired me to write it, it may have been the rhythm." Certainly, the lyrics serve the rhythm, with the nonsensical first line "Lucille, won't you do your sister's will" scanning to the beat.

If there was a real Lucille, it would probably be either Richard's (female) lover Lee Angel, or his mentor Steve Reeder Jr., who performed under the name Esquerita. Little Richard hasn't kept a lot of secrets, so it's more likely that he did make up Lucille. His next single was also named after a girl: "Jenny, Jenny."
  • In a 1999 interview with Mojo magazine, Richard explained: "The effects and rhythms you hear on my songs, I got 'em from the trains that passed by my house. Like 'Lucille' came from a train – Dadas-dada-dada-dada, I got that from the train."
  • This was released at a time when Richard was hot - he sold 32 million records in 1956 and 1957. His songs were also very successful for other artists, who sometimes outsold him with his own songs. "Lucille" was covered by The Everly Brothers, who matched Richard's #21 peak position with their version in 1960. Waylon Jennings had a #1 Country hit when he recorded this on his 1983 album It's Only Rock and Roll, and other artists to cover the song include Van Halen, Deep Purple, Johnny Winter, Bill Haley & His Comets, Otis Redding, AC/DC and The Hollies. (thanks, Julian - Oakland, AR)
  • Other popular Lucille's in music: B.B. King's guitar is named Lucille, and Kenny Rogers had a hit with different song with the same title in 1977 - his is the one that goes, "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille..."
