On the Other Hand

This Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz penned song was released in 1985 by Randy Travis as the leadoff single to his Storms of Life album, stalling at #67 on the Country chart. The song was re-released the following year after the success of his "1982" single, and this time it became the singer's first Country #1.

The song depicts a man with a wedding band on one hand, who is tempted by another woman. Overstreet and Schlitz were actually trying to write a different song when they got the idea for this one. "We were trying to write a theme for another song. It was the idea that when you have one woman, you shouldn't be looking for another one," Overstreet recalled to Country Weekly. "I personally was tired of that whole scenario of going from one relationship to another, and not having the strength to really say no in tempting situations. I was hoping we could write a song that would say we had the strength to say no."

"So right in the middle of that song, we kind of bantered some lines back and forth and Don said 'but on the other hand,' and I said, 'there's a golden band,'" he continued. "From that point, we looked at each other and kind of got that glitter in our eyes, and finished it real quick. Then we went to lunch."

The song was originally recorded by Keith Whitley on his 1985 album L.A. to Miami.

Der Kommissar

The original version was recorded in German by the Austrian singer Falco, who had a #1 hit in the US in 1986 with "Rock Me Amadeus." His version of "Der Kommissar" was a dance-floor favorite in Europe, but unlikely to crack the American charts, so Falco encouraged English-speaking bands to record this song so he could make inroads in the States.

After The Fire was a British foursome whose most notable member was former Yes synth-man Peter Banks. They released three fairly successful albums in England before their label, CBS Records, issued the Der Kommissar album in America. The title track became the group's only hit - their follow up was a song called "Dancing in the Shadows," which topped out at #85 in the US.

"Kommissar" is German for "Government Official." The song is about a couple on the run from the law. Every time they happen to be in public, "Der Kommissar" shows up. Hence the phrase, "Alles klar? Der Kommissar," which means "Everything OK, officer? (thanks, Arturo - Houston, TX)

Laura Branigan put out an English language variant, "Deep in the Dark" on her album Branigan. Bill Bowersock wrote the lyrics to her version. After The Fire's take on the song used lyrics that were basically a translation of Falco's original words.

This is the first single released by Richard Rawson under his real name. Better known by his former stage moniker of Fazer, Rawson is a member of the Hip-Hop trio N-Dubz, and has also had some solo success , clocking a UK Top 20 hit with "Killer."

The Wanted's Tom Parker is the guest singer on this tune. "I got in touch with Tom because I'm a fan of his vocal," Rawson told Digital Spy . "I love what he does and what he brings as an artist."

"I didn't want an R&B vocal on that kind of record," he added. "I wanted the more indie route, so I called Tom and he came down and he threw in some melodies and we came up with this record."

For the sake of a good story, Angus Young used to tell reporters that "Thunderstruck" was born from a flight where AC/DC's plane was struck by lightning. While that tale was embellished, The Ohio Players "Love Rollercoaster" really did come from a harrowing flight. The group was traveling to a show in a twin engine airplane (a Navajo), while flying through turbulent, stormy weather. As their drummer Jimmy "Diamond" Williams tells it, he was in the co-pilot seat when the plane hit air pockets that dropped it at least 400 feet (he saw the instruments). Someone on the plane commented that they must love their jobs, since the airplane ride was a "love rollercoaster." Lead singer Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner wrote the lyrics around that phrase, with the band working up the track. Both the writing and production credits on the song go to the band.

This song is the subject of an urban myth. During an instrumental break, there is a scream that sounds a little out of place. It was rumored that the scream was the sound of a woman being murdered in the studio. According to the story, which was started by a DJ in California, this woman was the model who appeared on the album cover. She was kneeling on glass and pouring honey in her mouth. While she was doing it, she found out that the glass was actually fiber glass and the honey reacted with the fiber glass by sticking to her legs and ripping all the skin off. She went in the manager's studio while the band was still recording and threatened to sue the band, which is when the manager stabbed her to death. The band left in the scream as a cruel joke. The scream was actually keyboard player Billy Beck. Instead of telling the truth, the band agreed to coyly answer "no comment" when asked about the rumor, claiming they took a vow of silence. The ploy worked, as the urban legend gave the song a buzz and help sell records.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded a version of this for the soundtrack of the 1996 movie Beavis And Butthead Do America. Their version hit #7 in the UK.

This song was used for the movie Final Destination 3, which follows a group of teenagers who avoid death by rollercoaster, but cannot escape fate. (thanks, Kat - Grafton, MA)

What Can I Do

The follow-up to SecondCity's UK #1 single, "I Wanna Feel," this features vocals by Ali Love. The song was released through Ministry of Sound Recordings/Speakerbox.

Ali Love (real name Alexander Williams) is a British singer, who first came to fame when he provided vocals for The Chemical Brothers 2007 hit, "Do It Again." He also sung on Justice's 2011 track, "Civilization."

The collaboration with Ali Love was completed within an hour. "It happened quite sneakily," SecondCity told MTV UK. "I just thought he'd be really cool (for the track). I didn't know him at the time but a friend of mine knew him and was like 'shall we give him a call?' and I was like 'really?! Alright, cool, do it,' and they just called him up and they were like 'Oh I'm in the studio with Secondcity, do you want to come down and we'll record some vocals?' and he was just like 'yeah why not I'll come down now' and an hour later he was there!"

"We played him the record and he was like 'yeah this is so sick, I absolutely love it, lets just do it' and he just started singing there and then. Within an hour it was kind of done!"

Secondcity added: "He was someone I'd had in the back of my mind for a long time from like (Hot Natured track) Benediction and his older stuff as well that he did with Justice and stuff like that… I'd always thought he was really good and versatile."

This mid-tempo rocker shows the sensitive side of Whitesnake's frontman David Coverdale, who wrote the song with guitarist John Sykes. Missing the typical Whitesnake swagger, this song finds Coverdale waiting by the phone for his girlfriend to call.

Whitesnake was the name of several of Coverdale's solo projects after he left Deep Purple. This version of the group was breaking up when the single was released, and Coverdale had to put together another band to go on the road to promote it.

I Can't Outrun You

This song was inspired by a real-life heartbreaking situation for songwriter Kyle Jacobs, who penned the tune with Joe Leathers and Ben Glover.

Jacobs and Leathers were on Keifer and Shawna Thompson's bus one night and asked if they could play the married pair in the song. "It wasn't really a pitch," Keifer explained to Radio.com . "They played it for us, and we just loved it and got talking about it and if we should get to recording. The label was on board with it and loved it and everybody else, too."

Despite being happily married, Shawna said the pair could both relate to the heartbreaking situation portrayed in the song. "It's so real. We knew the story because Kyle told us the back story of the song," she said. "Even without the back story it's just a heart-wrenching song. We've been through breakups before, and we know that horrible feeling when you're trying to get over somebody because you know it's not going to work."

The song was originally written from a guy's perspective, but once the Thompsons got into the studio they decided to make it a duet. "We started playing around with it and turned it into a duet," Shawna said, "which is interesting, coming from two different perspectives."

This classic Funk song explains why men are always going after women: It's because they have a little a dog in them, and dogs chase cats.

This was released under George Clinton's name after he lost the rights to the names "Funkadelic" and "Parliament," but he used the same musicians.

This rollicking punk-popper was penned by 5SOS's Michael and Ashton along with All Time Low vocalist Alex Gaskarth and producer John Feldmann, who co-wrote "Heroes" for All Time Low's 2011 Dirty Work album.

Georgia On My Mind

This was written by Hoagy Carmichael and Stuart Gorrell in 1930. Carmichael was an actor, performer, and popular songwriter - some of his other compositions include "Stardust" and "Winter Moon." Gorrell was a banker living in New York City, and he wrote the lyrics.

It's possible that this was written about a woman, not the state. Carmichael and Gorrell didn't live in Georgia, but Carmichael did have a sister named Georgia.

This was a #10 hit for a Jazz saxophone player named Frankie Trumbauer in 1931. Many artists have recorded it over the years, including Louis Armstrong, James Brown (a Georgia native), Django Reinhardt, and Willie Nelson. Charles' version is by far the most famous.

Charles decided to record this after his driver suggested it, since Ray kept singing it while riding in the car.

Ray Charles was born in Georgia. His family moved to Florida when he was still a baby.

The orchestra was arranged by Ralph Burns, Woody Herman's pianist.

This was recorded quickly in New York City - it took only four takes to complete (compared to Charles' usual 10-12 takes).

This won Grammy awards for Best Male Vocal Recording and Best Pop Song Performance. The album also won for Best Male Vocal Performance Album, and another song on the album, "Let the Good Times Roll," won for Best R&B Performance, giving Charles a total of 4 Grammys in 1960.

Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola originally wrote this song down at their Florida HQ, before frontman Sully Erna added some finishing touches. Larkin recalled to Artist Direct : "When Sully came down here, I was playing the drum beat I had off a ride cymbal. He was like, 'Dude, I want to create space.' He wrote the drum beat that ended up being the verse to that. It's really tribal. He's very good at the hand drums and tribal sounds. He heard this beat, and I thought, 'Oh my God, I never would've thought of that.'"

"After we played it a bunch of times at pre-production up in Boston, it came together," Larkin continued. "It created a lot of space. It's different. It has a 'Voodoo' vibe to it. Shout out to my boy Sully Erna! He took a song Tony and I had written, put his stamp on it, and made it sound like this cool, dark Godsmack song."

Scott English wrote the lyrics and recorded this song in 1971 as "Brandy." His version was a hit in the UK. In the US, this was changed to "Mandy" to avoid confusion with the Looking Glass hit "Brandy (You're A Fine Girl)."

Richard Kerr wrote the music. Kerr is a pianist who teamed up with Will Jennings to write two more hits for Manilow: "Looks Like We Made It" and "Somewhere In The Night."

The bit about "Mandy" being about Manilow's dog is an urban myth. Songwriter and original performer Scott English says he was woken by a phone call from a reporter, wanting to know who "Brandy" was. "I would have said anything to get rid of him," says English, "So I spat out the first thing that came to mind: It was about a dog like Lassie and I had sent her away - now you go away!' The song was on an episode of Family Guy titled "Back to the Woods." Barry Manilow comes to Quahog, but not without a little bit of criticism from Peter and his friends, until all admit they are closet Manilow fans. In the episode, Barry plays himself and sings his own version of "Mandy," re-titled as "Quagmire" for having an exotic name. The words are the same, but the name has changed.
