Hopeful yet tinged with sadness, this song finds Ambrosius encouraging the listener not to be afraid when love comes knocking on the door. "There's so many ways to spin what love is for you," she said. "It can be the most joyful and terrifying time to love at the level that you feel you deserve."

We're Not Gonna Take It

This is the mighty anthem for anyone lashing out at an authority figure and ready to put up a fight. The song is short on specifics, so it can apply to just about any situation where "we" are battling "the powers that be." This all-purpose approach was intentional and gave the song a timeless quality. In our interview with Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider , he explained: "With 'We're Not Gonna Take It,' whether I was singing about my parents, my teachers, my bosses, my peers, people around me, I felt it was important not to define it by actually naming names and singing, 'Dad, you're so trite and jaded, I hate my teachers, too.' And thus, the song has had a life in sporting events, at political rallies, at protests, pretty much anybody who's not taking something from somebody else, they're going to break into 'We're Not Gonna Take It' all over the world."

Twisted Sister wrote this song to the basic tune of "O Come All Ye Faithful." On their 2006 album A Twisted Christmas, they did a version of "O Come, All Ye Faithful" with using the traditional lyrics but set to the music of "We're Not Gonna Take It."

Dee Snider started writing this song in 1980, two years before Twisted Sister released their first album, Under the Blade. He had the hook, but couldn't come up with a verse melody. After Def Leppard released their Pyromania album in 1983, Snider came up with a plan. "In studying some of Mutt Lange's work with Def Leppard, I saw that a number of their songs were using variations on the chorus as a verse," he told us. "That gave me the information I needed to come up with the rest of 'We're Not Gonna Take It.'"

The song was finished in time for Twisted Sister's third album, Stay Hungry, which was their breakthrough, taking them out of the clubs and into arenas. "We're Not Gonna Take It," released as the first single, led the charge thanks to the innovative video with cartoonish violence featuring a young kid that turns into Snider, telling his father he's "Not gonna take it!"

With frequent airplay on the emerging MTV, Twisted Sister was exposed to a large and more youthful audience, and soon they were all over the media. What many didn't realize was that band had been around for over a decade by this time, and had already built a loyal following in the New York area. On the Stay Hungry tour, Snider would often commend the fans that were there when you couldn't catch them on MTV.

The video features Mark Metcalf, who played Neidermeyer in the 1978 movie Animal House. Before the song starts, Metcalf comes into the kid's room and berates him, ending his tirade by asking the now-famous phrase, "what are you want do with your life"? (answer: "I wanna rock!").

The dialogue was written by the video's director Marty Callner, who had directed several HBO specials but never a music video. He said in the book I Want My MTV: "Atlantic Records had signed a Long Island band they didn't know what to do with, Twisted Sister. They had a song, 'We're Not Gonna Take It,' and because of my comedy and music background, they seemed like the perfect hybrid for me."

Mark Metcalf ended by starring in the next Twisted Sister video as well: "I Wanna Rock." He was living in Pittsburgh and only took the gig because he got a free flight to LA where he had a girlfriend. Snider, a huge Animal House fan, picked him up at the airport and they instantly bonded.

In this song, not only are we not gonna take it, but we're going to turn the tables and let our oppressor know that his life is not only "trite and jaded" but also "boring and confiscated." Going on the attack was a Twisted Sister specialty: At their concerts, Dee Snider would go on tirades about various people and institutions, and would sometimes berate audience members who were killing the vibe.

Eddie Ojeda and Jay Jay French shared guitar duties with Twisted Sister. Ojeda played the solo on this one.

Mitt Romney's running mate Paul Ryan used the song during the 2012 Republican Party's presidential campaign, causing Dee Snider to air his disapproval. "I emphatically denounce Paul Ryan's use of my band Twisted Sister's song 'We're Not Gonna Take It' in any capacity," said the Twisted Sister frontman in a statement. "There is almost nothing he stands for that I agree with except the use of the [workout program] P90X."

Snider, however, had no problem with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump using the the tune as the "exit song" during the politician's 2015 campaign stops. "Donald Trump is a good friend and a great guy, and I support him turning the political system on its head," he told TMZ.com . "The song 'We're Not Gonna Take It' is a song about rebellion, and there's nothing more rebellious than what Donald Trump is doing right now. Although [Democratic presidential candidate] Bernie Sanders can use it as well; he's turning things upside down too."

This duet with Charlie Wilson finds Ambrosius addressing what it feels like to bid farewell to fallen loved ones. "This is about me missing my grandmother and my aunt to the point where it hindered how I carried on my day," she said. "I lost my grandmother in 2003. I lost my Aunt way too suddenly to cancer and to watch her deteriorate before my eyes made me look at what is important."

The Candy Man

Aubrey Woods performed this in the 1971 movie Willie Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder and Jack Albertson. Co-writer Anthony Newley was so appalled at Woods' performance that he asked producers Stan Margulies and David Wolper to let him perform Woods' role if they could reshoot the scene, but Newley's offer was turned down.

As the movie wrapped up production, Mike Curb recorded an instrumental backing for the song with Sammy Davis Jr. in mind. The former member of the Rat Pack didn't like the song at first but decided to do it anyway. The result: the biggest hit of Davis' career.

Newley wasn't too thrilled with Davis's version either. He was recording his own edition of the song when MGM released Davis's version as a single. Newley was going through a divorce from actress Joan Collins in the same year Willie Wonka And The Chocolate Factory was released.

In 1985, this became the "Sunshine Baker Man" in a television commercial. Davis sang it, too.

This song was used in the animated film Madagascar as Alex the lion is hit with a tranquilizer dart. (thanks, Alistair - Dundee, Scotland)

After Sammy reluctantly eventually agreed to record the song, he rushed through it in two takes before heading to Vietnam to entertain the troops. This Is My Song

This song was written by the silent movie giant Charlie Chaplin for his movie A Countess From Hong Kong, starring Sophia Loren and Marlon Brando. Chaplin was a talented composer, his most famous work being "Smile," which he wrote as an instrumental for his 1936 film Modern Times.

Petula Clark (known as "Pet Clark" in her native England) said of the song: "I heard it and I thought it was a charming, slightly old fashioned love song. I could hear it being a hit in French, Italian and German."

Clark recorded versions of the song in French, Italian, and German for the European market. At the same time, her husband Claude recorded the original English version used in the movie. At the end of her recording session, Petula Clark recorded her English version using her husband's backing track.

Clark didn't want to record the song in English, as she didn't think it would work, but her producer Sonny Burke convinced her to do it. Reluctantly, she recorded the song. The English version was the first one released, issued in the UK where it quickly rose to #1.

An English-language version by Harry Secombe was released in the UK before Clark's - his version spent a week at #1 there.

Clark recorded the song in Los Angeles with Ernie Freeman handling the arrangements. Freeman did a lot of work with Frank Sinatra and became a top arranger for many of the '60s hits recorded with the talented LA session musicians who performed on this track. Clark says he did "this absolutely perfect arrangement" on "This Is My Song."

This was Christine McVie's solo on side 1 of the album. It proved her talent apart from the group. She wrote the song, sang it, and played the piano for it.

The album took off in the UK after Cassidy's version of "Over the Rainbow" was played by Terry Wogan on his BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. The Songbird set went on to top the UK album charts, almost three years after its initial release. In 2009 an audition performance of Cassidy's arrangement of this song by Shanna Goodhead on Britain's The X-Factor, prompted enough interest to push the late American's singer's version into the UK Top 75 Singles Chart.

Christine McVie penned the song in half a hour after she woke up in the middle of the night with it in her head. She recalled to Mojo in 2015: "Stevie and I were in a condominium block and the boys were all in the Sausalito Record Plant house raving with girls and boozer and everything. I had a little transistorised electric piano next to my bed and I woke up one night at about 3.30am and started playing it. I had all, words, melody, chords in about 30 minutes. It was like a gift from the angels, but I had no way to record it. I thought I'm never gonna remember this. So I went back to bed, and couldn't sleep. I wrote the words down quickly."

"Next day, I went into the studio shaking like a leaf' cos I knew it was something special. I said, 'Ken, (Caillat, Rumours' co-producer/engineer) put the 2-track on, I want to record this song!' I think they were all in there, smoking opium."

The song was recorded away from the studio at the University of California's Zellerbach Auditorium.

Changing

The follow-up to Sigma's UK #1 single "Nobody to Love," this song finds the production duo collaborating with singer-songwriter Paloma Faith and a full orchestra. The track was premiered on BBC Radio 1 during Annie Mac's July 11, 2014 show.

The song's music video was shot on location in downtown Miami and finds Faith performing the track in the backstreets of the Florida city.

The collaboration with Paloma Faith came about through Sigma's management. Joe Lenzie of the duo explained to Digital Spy : "We'd written the track and originally we had Ella Eyre featuring on it but I think she was trying to move away from the dance stuff and she didn't want to be the feature artist. We were basically just trying to find someone to replace her because obviously she's got such an amazing voice. It's quite hard to get someone as solid as that, but Paloma's performance is amazing on it so we just kind of took it from there."

The song marked the second UK #1 for the Sigma pair and Paloma Faith's debut as a chart topper after three previous Top Ten hits in her own right.

How You Remind Me

In an interview with MTV, Nickelback's lead singer Chad Kroeger said that he wrote the song about his old girlfriend Jodi, who he had a rather dysfunctional relationship with. He kept the lyrics very ambiguous, however, which accounts for much of the song's success, as many people could relate to an ex who started pointing out all of your faults at the same time and caused considerable heartbreak: "This time I'm mistaken, for handing you a heart worth breaking." Silver Side Up was Nickelback's third album, and many of the songs were about relationships and personal issues.

Kroeger brought the song to the band a week before recording the album, thinking of it as a possible last-minute addition. The band finished the song in about 10 minutes and knew they had something special. This was a contrast to most of the album's material, which was written even before their previous album, The State (2000).

This was a huge surprise hit for Nickelback's record company, Roadrunner Records, which was expecting Slipknot to provide their commercial success for 2001. Instead, it was Nickelback. The album was released on September 11, 2001. This was the first single and most popular song, resulting in many listeners associating the song with remembrances of the tragedies of that day. A wildly popular song that covered a range of formats, "How You Remind Me" was the most-played song of 2002 on US radio stations. It was also the most-played radio song in the US during the first decade of the 21st century, with over 1.2 million spins. It was followed on this list by Train's "Drops of Jupiter," which was played over 1.1 million times during the '00s.

This was only the second time a song by a Canadian group hit #1 on the US charts. The first time - "American Woman" by The Guess Who.

Sum 41 was known to cover this song from time to time with slight changes to the lyrics. They played it on MTV's New Year's countdown to 2002.

Near the end of this song, the band drops out and Kroeger bellows, "for handing you a heart worth breaking!"

It was the band's drum tech Andrew Mawhinney who came up with the idea for this hook. Kroeger recalled: "He goes, 'you guys should do a big stop right at the last chorus'."

The band gave Mawhinney $5000 for coming up with the suggestion.

Chad Kroeger's fiancée, Avril Lavigne, covered the song in 2012 for One Piece Film Z, the eleventh Japanese anime feature film based on the shŠnen manga series One Piece by Eiichiro Oda. The couple married the following year.
