Once Upon a Dream Lyrics

Once Upon a Dream
  • Written by Jack Lawrence for the Disney animated musical fantasy film Sleeping Beauty, this song acted as the theme of Princess Aurora and Prince Philip. It was performed by a chorus as an overture and as a duet by Mary Costa and Bill Shirley, who were cast in the roles of Princess Aurora and Prince Philip.
  • The song was covered by Lana Del Rey for the 2014 dark fantasy film Maleficent, which served as a prequel to Sleeping Beauty. Released as a single, it peaked at #60 in the UK and #105 in the US.
  • Del Rey told Radio.com that she had good memories of the recording session. "I did that song with my best friend for the last ten years, Dan Heath, who became one of my producers," she recalled. "He and I have such a great thing going. We did it at home actually, at his home studio. We recorded on the same mic we've used on a lot of my other songs that we've done together. It was exciting, because we love Disney. We love the history of Disney. So, it was really natural and nice to be involved in a project like that."

    Out Of Sight Lyrics

You got your high-heeled sneakers on
    Slip-in mules
You got your high-heeled sneakers on
    And your slip-in mules
    You're more than alright
You know you're Out Of Sight
You got a shapely figure mama
    That's keepin' me uptight
You got a shapely figure mama
    And keep me uptight
    You're too much
You know you're out of sight

Hey, the way you do the things you do
The way you kiss me too
The way you do the things you do
The way you kiss me too
A heart delight, that's what you are
You know you're out of sight

    Ho, hey, hey

    You got a sweet disposition
    Ho, you're always right
    You got a sweet disposition
    You know you're always right
You know just what you're doin' baby
You know you're out of sight

    Ow, you're too much
    You're the end
    You're so hip baby
You know just where it's at
    You're beautiful mama
    Most of all, you're honest
There's no doubt, you're out of sight
    Out of sight, whoo, wee
    Out of sight

    Out Of Sight
  • In 1964, Brown and his agent formed Fair Deal Records and began leasing new recordings to Smash Records. When this was released by Smash, Brown's old label, King Records, sued him for breach of contract. While the lawsuit was percolating through the system, this reached #24 on the singles charts, and Smash readied "I Got You (I Feel Good)" for release, which it did in the summer of '64.
  • In October 1964, a judge ruled that Smash would be allowed to issue only instrumental recordings by Brown, and all masters of his vocals would become property of King Records. Distribution of "I Got You (I Feel Good)" was halted upon the ruling.
  • This was King Record's third Smash single, after "Caldonia" (a big-band version of Louis Jordan's classic hit) and a cover of Guitar Slim's "The Things I Used to Do."
  • Brown recorded this with his band, The Famous Flames. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for all above)

  • The second single from The Righteous & the Butterfly album, this song is about the unraveling of the American Dream. Vocalist J-Mann explained to Revolver magazine the song is, "A magnifying glass on the apathy and disinterest in anything that's not seen on TV or sold at the mall."
  • The Righteous & The Butterfly album title is a dedication to original Mushroomhead guitarist J.J. Righteous and drummer Steve "Skinny" Felton's wife Vanessa Solowiow, who both of whom had died in 2010 and 2013 respectively.

"J.J. was a key member of our band," said Skinny. "He played on the first three records and Vanessa was our photographer and the mother of my children. They were both huge pieces of Mushroomhead and this record is dedicated to them."

    Get Off Lyrics

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

    Yeah
    Get Off

Music may ease and end all discretion
    So we can get off
We keep under the sheets with two lovelys
    So we can get off

Said I hope that we get the promise, ladies
    And make me get off
Take it from girls with our imagination
    So we can get off

Call me up at your place, I can love you crazy
In the heat you will understand
Danger and excitement, that's what makes a lady
Find out what she wants in a man

To get off, to get off, to get off, to get off
To get off, to get off, to get off, to get, get off

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Lookin' through that dress that drive me crazy and makes me get off
Sensuality excites my mind, it makes get off
If I were you I'd get a good perspective on how to get off
Love me wild and love me crazy, so we can get off

Call me up at your place, I can love you crazy
In the heat you will understand
Danger and excitement, that's what makes a lady
Find out what she wants in a man

To get off, to get off, to get off, to get off
To get off, to get off, to get off, to get, get off

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

    Get off

So get off to get off, to get off, to get, get off
Get off to get off, to get off, get off
So get off, get off, to get off, to get, get off
Get off to get off, get off, get off

To get off, to get off, to get off, to get, get off
Get off, get off, get off, to get off
Get off to get off, get off, get, get off
Get off, get off, so get off, just get off

    Get Off
  • Foxy lead singer Ish Ledesma has a rather lengthy video on YouTube where he goes into detail about the origins of "Get Off." He claims it was on the west coast, up in northern Califnrnia where he and his band were performing in some small club. They started doing the "Ooh-wah ooh-wah" chants and the club owner absolutely hated them and threatened to "Throw the band into the bay" if they kept doing it. So Ish, out of spite and anger, came up with "Get Off" as a way to get back at the owner. The rest of the band didn't want to perform it, knowing already that it would cause trouble, but they went ahead and performed it anyway. And sure enough, the club owner had the performance stopped in mid-song, and had the band thrown out of his club. A few months later, the "revenge" song was burning up the charts. (thanks, Chris - San Bernardino, CA)
  • Four of the five members of the group left Cuba and arrived in Miami in 1959. Percussionist Richie Puente is the son of Tito Puente. When KC & The Sunshine Band were on tour, Foxy became the house band for Miami's TK Productions.

    Start A Fire Lyrics

I was born a baby boy a long time ago
Back when the hillsides were green and the water would flow
But nights they fall and settle like snow
I watched as the hillsides turned white with nowhere to go

Oh, think I’m gonna Start A Fire
Oh, think I’m gonna start a fire

Now my heart’s a frozen lake where streams used to flow
Down to the forest of my mind where memory would grow
Now I walk amongst the trees where the last sun glows
The leaves are all golden and brown with nowhere to go

Oh think I’m gonna start a fire
And oh think I’m gonna start a fire now

    My skin like these boulders
    Is cracking and older
With each passing year that goes
    My cliff face is crumbling
    Silently tumbling
    Down to the water below
And if I light a match I’ll be able to catch
The last sun before it goes

And oh well, I think I’m gonna start a fire
Oh think I’m gonna start a fire
And oh, think I’m gonna start a fire now

    Twenty-Five Miles Lyrics

Hey hey uh huh huh huh huh oh
Uh huh huh huh huh huh yeah
It's twenty five miles from home
Girl, my feet are hurting mighty bad
Now I've been walking a three day, two lonely nights
You know that I'm mighty mad
But I got a woman waiting for me
That's gonna make this trip worthwhile
You see she's got the kind of lovin' and a kissing
A make a man go stone wild
So I got to keep on walkin'
I got to walk on, oh ho ho
    I, I, I, I'm so tired
But I just can't lose my stride

I got fifteen miles to go now
And I can hear my baby calling my name
It's as if as though I'm standing at her front door
I can hear that doggone plain
Now I'll be so glad to see my baby
And hold her in my arms
Now when I kiss her lips
I turn a back over flip and I'll forget these feet of mine
I got to keep on walkin'
I got to walk on oh ho ho
    I, I, I, I, I'm so tired but I just can't lose my stride
    Walk on let me tell you ya'll I, I, I, I, I, I'm so tired
But I just can't lose my stride
Come on feet don't fail me now
I got ten more miles to go
I got nine, eight, seven, six, eight, six
I got a five more miles to go
Now over the hill just around the bend
Huh although my feet are tired I can't lose my stride
I got to get to my baby again

Tough girl in the fast lane
No time for love, no time for hate
No drama, no time for games
    Tough girl whose soul aches

I'm at home, on my own
    Check my phone, nothing, though
    Act busy, order in
    Pay TV, it’s agony

I may cry ruinin' my makeup
Wash away all the things you've taken
    And I don't care if I don’t look pretty
Big Girls Cry when their hearts are breaking
Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking
Big girls cry when their heart is breaking

    Tough girl, I'm in pain
It's lonely at the top, black outs and airplanes
And I still pour you a glass, of champagne
    Tough girl whose soul aches

I'm at home, on my own
    Check my phone, nothing, though

    Big Girls Cry
  • Despite the claims of The Four Seasons and Fergie, the toughest girl does break down once in a while.

    I don't care if I don't look beauty
Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking

The soaring ballad finds Sia singing about a hard-bitten girl who lives alone. Having bottled up her emotions, she finally breaks down over the lack of a text message from the man she loves.
  • Sia penned the song with English singer-songwriter Chris Braide. The pair previously collaborated on Britney Spears' single, "Perfume " and David Guetta's hit tune "She Wolf (Falling to Pieces)."
  • Directed by Sia with Daniel Askill, the video is the Australian singer-songwriter's third collaboration with Maddie Ziegler. Filmed in front of a stark black backdrop, the preteen dancer and actress performs straight to camera with only her shoulders upwards in view for the majority of the clip. Ziegler previously appeared in Sia's videos for "Chandelier" and "Elastic Heart."

Put on my best dress, I wanted to impress
    I put a little make-up on
Put a bow in my hair, wore pretty underwear
Hoping you might take it off
    Don't know your etiquette
But I'm strapped to my chair
And it ain't 'cause you're pretty
    You were charming, until
You saw your chance to kill
    Your chance to make history

You went Straight for the Knife
    And I prepared to die
    Your blade it shines
Looked me straight in the eye
You turned the gas on high
    Held the flame alight
    You wonder why
    I'm scared of fire
You wonder why you make girls cry

My mascara a mess, harsh words for your princess
    Boy, you and your promises
If your goal was to love, you scored an epic miss
    Now you'll just have memories

You went straight for the knife
    And I prepared to die
    Your blade it shines
Looked me straight in the eye
You turned the gas on high
    Held the flame alight
    You wonder why
    I'm scared of fire
You wonder why you make girls cry

Boy, you draw me back in
I'm hungry for your bad loving
But will someone find me swinging from the rafters
From hanging on your every word

You went straight for the knife
    And I prepared to die
    Your blade it shines
Looked me straight in the eye
You turned the gas on high
    Held the flame alight

Well the South side of Chicago
Is the baddest part of town
And if you go down there
    You better just beware
Of a man named Leroy Brown

    Now Leroy more than trouble
You see he stand 'bout six foot four
All the downtown ladies call him "Treetop Lover"
All the men just call him "Sir"

And it's Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
The baddest man in the whole damned town
    Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

    Now Leroy he a gambler
And he like his fancy clothes
And he like to wave his diamond rings
    In front of everybody's nose
    He got a custom Continental
    He got an Eldorado too
He got a thirty two gun in his pocket for fun
He got a razor in his shoe

And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown
The baddest man in the whole damned town
    Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Now Friday 'bout a week ago
    Leroy shootin' dice
And at the edge of the bar
    Sat a girl named Doris
And oo that girl looked nice
Well he cast his eyes upon her
    And the trouble soon began
And Leroy Brown learned a lesson
'Bout messin' with the wife of a jealous man

And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown
The baddest man in the whole damned town
    Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

Well the two men took to fighting
And when they pulled them off the floor
Leroy looked like a jigsaw puzzle
With a couple of pieces gone

And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown
The baddest man in the whole damned town
    Badder than old King Kong
And meaner than a junkyard dog

And it's bad, bad Leroy Brown

    Bad, Bad Leroy Brown
  • Jim Croce joined the US National Guard in 1966, hoping it would keep him from getting sent to Vietnam. He married Ingrid that year, and hoped to continue his education and launch his music career. Unfortunately, Jim was sent for training less then two weeks after their wedding. As Ingrid told us, Jim had no interest in being a soldier and had the distinction of having to repeat basic training. Ingrid explains how Jim got the idea for this song: "Leroy Brown is a guy that he actually met. When he was in the service - The National Guard - this guy had gone AWOL. He was a guy that Jim kind of related to, he liked to sing with him. This guy had gone AWOL but he came back to get his paycheck, and he got caught. Jim just thought he was such a funny guy that he thought he'd include his name in the song, and it just worked. There really was a Leroy Brown, and sometimes having a name helps you to build a song around it."
  • Ingrid runs Croce's Restaurant & Jazz Bar in San Diego, where she keeps Jim's legacy alive and hears from many patrons who were touched by Jim's songs. Says Ingrid: "I have a lot of staff members that come up to me and say, 'You know what, there's a guy named Leroy Brown, he kind of looks like the part, and he's sitting at our bar right now.' I say, 'Well, I'll be glad to come over and say hi.' There's so many Leroy Browns who have come up to me and said, 'I'm sure I'm the one he was talking about.'"
  • When Jim Croce would introduce this song, he said there were two people he encountered in the military who inspired this song: a sergeant at Fort Jackson and a private at Fort Dix. The actual Leroy was the sergeant, but it was the private who went AWOL and returned for his paycheck.
  • The piano riff at the beginning was based on Bobby Darin's "Queen of the Hop."
  • This was Jim Croce's first #1 hit ("Time in a Bottle" was the other). It topped the charts 10 weeks before he died in a plane crash.
  • This is sung by a parrot in the movie Home Alone 3. Shelly Smith covered it for that film's soundtrack. (thanks, Greg - Calgary, Canada)
  • In 2008, producer Warren Zide (American Pie) bought the movie rights to this song. Ingrid Croce said: "We've always wanted to do a movie with one of Jim's character songs - we just want him and his memory and his music to live on. Most importantly, it sounds as if it's going to be a lot of fun. And Jim liked to have fun." (Read more in Ingrid Croce's Songfacts interview)
  • This wasn't the first hit from the '70s to feature a "Leroy." In Todd Rundgren's song "We Gotta Get You A Woman," the lovelorn character is named Leroy. In real life, he was Paul, but Rundgren couldn't find a good rhyme for that name.

Can't you see I'm wrapped in cellophane

  • Addicted to painkillers and alcohol and suffering from panic attacks because of the incessant cycle of having to promote her music, a depressed Sia Furler contemplated suicide, but was stopped by a friend. Sia began a twelve-step program and focused on writing songs for other artists. After success penning hit tunes for the likes of David Guetta ("Titanium") and Rihanna, ("Diamonds"), Sia signed a contract with RCA to record an album, which stipulated she doesn't have to tour or do press appearances to promote it. This song finds Sia referencing her inability to deal with the pressures of the music industry by calling herself a basket case and comparing herself to a basket wrapped in cellophane.

Cellophane is made from a plant fiber, cellulose, which has been shredded and aged and then shaped into thin, flat, transparent sheets. Sia is saying that she's unable to hide herself away from her difficulties, while wrapped in something so crystal clear.

    Down in Devil Gate Drive
When I was sweet sisteen I was the jukebox queen
    Down in Devil Gate Drive
I lead the angel pack on the road to sin
    Knock down the gates!
Let me in. Let me in
Don't mess me 'round, cause you know where I've been
To 'The Dive' down in Devil Gate Drive

    [Chorus]

Well your mama don't know where your sister done go
She goes down to the Drive. She's the start of the show
Let her move on up. Let her come let her go.
    She can jive
    Down in Devil Gate Drive

    [Chorus]

    [Spoken:]
Come on, boys. Let's do it one more time for Suzi!
    Are you ready, now?

    Come alive. Come alive Yeah!
