The Chipmunk Song Lyrics

All right you Chipmunks
Ready to sing your song
I'll say we are, yeah
Let's sing it now
Okay, Simon?
Okay
Okay, Theodore?
Okay
Okay, Alvin? Alvin? Alvin
Okay

Christmas, Christmas time is near
Time for toys and time for cheer
We've been good but we can't last
Hurry Christmas, hurry fast
Want a plane that loops the loop
Me, I want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late

Okay fellas, get ready
That was very good, Simon
Naturally
Very good Theodore
Ah, Alvin, you were a little flat, watch it
Ah, Alvin, Alvin, Alvin
Okay

Want a plane that loops the loop
I still want a hula hoop
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late
We can hardly stand the wait
Please Christmas, don't be late

Very good, boys
Let's sing it again, yeah, lets sing it again
No, That's enough, lets not overdo it
What do you mean overdo it?
We want to sing it again
Now wait a minute, boys
Why can't we sing it again?
Alvin, cut that out Theodore, just a minute
Simon will you cut that out, boys

The Chipmunk Song
  • This was written and produced by Ross Bagdasarian (a.k.a. David Seville). The inspiration came to him from his youngest son, Adam, who had a habit of asking in September if it was Christmas yet. He figured if his son was already asking about the holiday so early, other kids probably were too.
  • The song went through three versions before Bagdasarian's family gave it the OK. The first version was an instrumental, the third was titled "In A Village Park," and the third and winner was "The Chipmunk Song." Bagdasarian came up with the idea for a trio of singing chipmunks after seeing one of those creatures on the road, refusing to move for his car.
  • Within three weeks of being released the song had sold over 2.5 million copies, making it the fastest-selling record of 1958. It hit #1 on December 22, 1958, and stayed there for four weeks. This is the last Christmas song to hit #1 in the US. (thanks, Jeff - Boston, MA, for above 3)
  • The Chipmunks were called Alvin, Simon and Theodore. They were named after Liberty Records president Al Bennett, owner Si Warnoker and the engineer on duty when it was recorded, Ted Keep.
  • This was the first Chipmunks single, although David Seville had previously recorded two singles using his pitched-up voice technique. The first was "Witch Doctor," which went to #1 US in April 1958. On that song, the chirpy voice represented the witch doctor, not a rodent. When Seville expanded the act he came up with the Chipmunks concept, creating three distinct characters, each with their own voices. "The Chipmunk Song" was their first single, and it set the stage for Chipmunk domination, which would later include TV series and movies.
  • The Chipmunks were very popular for the next few years; "Alvin's Harmonica" went to #3 in 1959, and the rodents got their on cartoon series - The Alvin Show - which ran from 1961-1962. They had some success with a 1964 album of Beatles covers, but by the end of the decade, it seemed that fad had passed.

Seville died of a heart attack in 1972, and in 1979, his son Ross Bagdasarian Jr. assumed control of The Chipmunks, doing the voices of David Seville, Alvin, and Simon, while Ross Jr's wife Janice Klarman did the voice for Theodore. In 1983, they got another TV series, Alvin and the Chipmunks, which ran until 1990. In the '00s, there was another Chipmunk resurgence, with a series of movies and some novelty cover songs that placed on the Hot 100 (their version of "Bad Day" made #67; "Funkytown" went to #86). In 2015 they got yet another TV series, this one called ALVINNN!!! and the Chipmunks.
  • Like many hit Christmas songs, this returned to the charts several times around the holiday season. Here are the chart placings on the Hot 100:

    1959, #41
    1960, #45
    1961, #39
    1962, #40

A new version of the song reached #66 in 2007, thanks to the box office success of the film Alvin And The Chipmunks.
  • This won three Grammy Awards: Best Comedy Performance, Best Recording For Children, and Best Engineered Record - Non-Classical (this one went to engineer Ted Keep, the namesake for Theodore).
  • Random trivia: Ross Bagdasarian can be seen playing the piano as a struggling composer in the Alfred Hitchcock movie classic Rear Window starring Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly. (thanks, Terry - Willmar, MN)

    Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo
  • Also known as "The Magic Song," this novelty number was penned by Al Hoffman, Mack David and Jerry Livingston for Disney's 1950 animated fairy tale Cinderella. The Fontane Sisters appeared on Perry Como's self-titled variety show dressed as mice and previewed a medley of songs from the film along with actress Ilene Woods, who played Cinderella. Como recorded "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" with the trio of New Jersey sisters with the film's "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" on the flip side.
  • In Cinderella, the Fairy Godmother (Verna Felton) performs this song as she transforms the title servant girl into an elegant princess for the royal ball. Felton was a popular character actress who loaned her voice to several other Disney films (she was Dumbo's mother, Flora the good fairy in Sleeping Beauty and the Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, to name a few). She also appeared on I Love Lucy as Mrs. Porter, the tough-as-nails maid in "Lucy Hires a Maid" and gruff neighbor Mrs. Simpson in "Sales Resistance."
  • Pop singer Jo Stafford and actor/singer Gordon MacRae recorded this song just two months after Como in 1949. Their version peaked at #19 on the Billboard charts.
  • In Shrek 2 (2004), Fiona's Fairy Godmother, voiced by Absolutely Fabulous actress Jennifer Saunders, parodies this song.

    Macarena
  • This was originally released on a local label in Spain in 1993, where it did fairly well. The next year, the American label BMG bought the Spanish label and set out to make "Macarena" a hit in America. They marketed an English language version to dance clubs and cruise ships, then released it as a single in 1995. It was a minor hit until the summer of 1996, when the Macarena dance craze hit America. The song went to #1 in July and stayed there for 14 weeks.
  • Los Del Rio (Antonio Romeo Monge and Rafael Ruiz) are a Spanish flamenco-pop duo. They were inspired to record this on a trip to Venezuela when they spotted a beautiful flamenco dancer named Diana Patricia. When the song became a hit, she became known in Venezuela as "Macarena."
  • This was the first hit for Los Del Rio since 1962 and their only hit in the US.
  • "La Macarena" is one of 8 sections (known as "quarters") of Seville, Spain. That's where they got the name.
  • Macarena is a female name which means "Mother of God."
  • The song has been remixed many times. The US single was a remix by a Miami-based production team called The Bayside Boys. As with any good dance song sensation (like "The Twist"), it also spawned spin-offs. Here's a breakdown of the "Macarena"s that charted in America:

Bayside Boys mix (#45 in 1995)
Los Del Rio (the re-release, which went to #1 in 1996)
Los Del Rio [non stop] (#23 in 1996)
Los Del Mar (#71 in 1996 - "Mar" means "sea" in Spanish, while "Rio" is "river")
    GrooveGrass Boyz (#107 in 1997 )
"Macarena Christmas" by Los Del Rio (#57 in 1996)
  • This became a hit in Europe and Latin America in 1995 when it was released on a compilation CD called Macarena Club Cutz.
  • The meaning of the song changes depending on what mix you are listening to. In the original version, Macarena is upset because her boyfriend, Vitorino, has joined the army. She retaliates by going out on the town and carousing with other men. In the Bayside Boys mix, Macarena gets mad at her boyfriend and goes out to shake it while he's out of town. In this version, she seems to be more promiscuous. The Bayside Boys also made it a first person account, with the lyrics being the voice of Macarena.
  • This song stayed in the US Top 100 for 60 weeks, the one-time record for the longest run on the singles chart. In 1998 it was overtaken by LeAnn Rimes' How Do I Live, which spent 69 weeks in total in the Hot 100. The song's 33-week climb (over two separate chart runs) to the #1 position established the record for the longest journey to the Hot 100's summit.
  • Los Del Rio is named after the Virgin of Seville, the "Virgin Del Rocio" (Virgin of the Dew), which is equivalent to the Virgin Mary. The members of the group, who don't speak English, were convinced it was a gift of the "Virgin Del Rocio" when this became an international hit.
  • The chorus translates to English as: "Give your body joy, Macarena, that your body is to give joy and good things."
  • In the US, this was the biggest dance craze of the 1990's. It was played at weddings, office parties, cruise ships, and just about anywhere there was dancing. Like the earlier dance craze, the "Electric Slide," it was easy to learn and was done in a group, making it perfect for Americans who lacked rhythm.
  • The world record for the most people performing one dance at the same time was set by 50,000 people in Yankee stadium while dancing the "Macarena."
  • The Bayside Boys Mix version samples seven seconds in the laughter of Yazoo vocalist Alison Moyet. It was taken from Yazoo's 1982 single "Situation."

They reach into my head to steal, the glory of my story

  • When she was a teenager, Natalie worked at a day camp for special needs children, many of whom had been institutionalized since infancy and abandoned by their parents. She mentioned that they seemed to have developed their own language to communicate with each other, especially the deaf and blind kids.

She wrote "Wonder" about one girl born with seemingly insurmountable physical handicaps who handled them with a great deal of personal grace. This girl was able to do this despite the odds, thanks to a loving and caring adoptive family. (thanks, Terry - Colchester, VT)

    When you feel the sunlight
    Fade into the cold night
    Don't know where to turn
I don't know where to turn
And all the dreams you're dreaming

Don't be sad, you're not alone

I Will Be Here For You
    Somewhere in the night
    Somewhere in the night
I'll shine a light for you
    Somewhere in the night
    I'll be standing by
I will be here for you

    In this world of strangers
    Of cold and friendly faces
    Someone you can trust
Oh there's someone you can trust
    I will be your shelter
    I'll give you my shoulder
Just reach out for my love
    Reach out for my love
Call my name and my heart will hear
I will be there, there's nothing to fear

I will be here for you

  • Warren doesn't do many co-writes, so Smith was very grateful for the opportunity to pen a song with the hitmaker. He told us how the collaboration came about. "I was on Geffen Records then, and John Coladnor, our guy there, set that whole thing up," he said. "And we seemed to hit it off and I got pretty comfortable pretty quick.

"But, obviously, yeah, you're around this girl who's written all these great hit songs. And we got in the studio and I started coming up with this piano melody and all of a sudden we had a song. And little did I know that it ended being a #1 AC pop song."

What's the matter with the clothes I'm wearing?
"Can't you tell that your tie's too wide? "
Maybe I should buy some old tab collars?
"Welcome back to the age of jive.
Where have you been hidin' out lately, honey?
You can't dress trashy till you spend a lot of money."
Everybody's talkin' 'bout the new sound
Funny, but It's Still Rock And Roll To Me

What's the matter with the car I'm driving?
"Can't you tell that it's out of style? "
Should I get a set of white wall tires?
"Are you gonna cruise the miracle mile?
Nowadays you can't be too sentimental
Your best bet's a true baby blue Continental."
Hot funk, cool punk, even if it's old junk
It's still rock and roll to me

Oh, it doesn't matter what they say in the papers
'Cause it's always been the same old scene.
There's a new band in town
But you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine
    Aimed at your average teen

How about a pair of pink sidewinders
And a bright orange pair of pants?
"You could really be a Beau Brummel baby
If you just give it half a chance.
Don't waste your money on a new set of speakers,
You get more mileage from a cheap pair of sneakers."
Next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways
It's still rock and roll to me

What's the matter with the crowd I'm seeing?
"Don't you know that they're out of touch? "
Should I try to be a straight 'A' student?
"If you are then you think too much.
Don't you know about the new fashion honey?
All you need are looks and a whole lotta money."
It's the next phase, new wave, dance craze, anyways

It's Still Rock And Roll To Me
  • In this song, Billy Joel was making a comment on musical styles and trends. At the end of the Disco era, the music press began touting the "New Wave" sound, which included bands like The Police and The Cars. Joel thought that this new sound was just a variation on Power-Pop that had been around since the '60s. He didn't have a problem with music, just the way it was being categorized. "I like it, but it's not particularly new," he said.
  • Around this time, Joel was often abased in the music press as a provider of middle-of-the-road dreck. Popular artists are often targets for journalist derision, but while most of these artists choose to ignore it, Joel responded in this song. The lines, "It doesn't matter what they say in the papers, 'cause it's always been the same old scene." and "There's a new band in town, but you can't get the sound from a story in a magazine," were specifically written to attack the press that was bringing him down by pointing out that the only way to know what a band sound like is to listen to it.

"Sometimes the press gave me a hard time, and liked giving them a hard time back," Joel told Howard Stern in 2014. "In my neighborhood, somebody hits you, you hit them right back."
  • One of Joel's most popular songs, this was his first #1 hit on the Hot 100, spending two weeks at the top spot in July, 1980. The single was certified Platinum, which at the time meant sales in excess of 2 million.

Joel would score two more #1 hits in America: "Tell Her About It" and "We Didn't Start The Fire."
  • "Miracle Mile," as mentioned in the line "Should I get a set of white wall tires? Are you gonna cruise a miracle mile?" is a stretch of road (about a mile long) full of various stores in Manhasset, Long Island near where Joel grew up. (thanks, Nicole - Garden City, NY)
  • After he wrote this song, Joel says he realized that the chords were the same ones Bob Dylan used on "Lay Lady Lay."

The Day I Tried To Live Lyrics

I woke the same as any other day
Except a voice was in my head
It said seize the day, pull the trigger,
    Drop the blade
    And watch the rolling heads

The Day I Tried To Live
    I stole a thousand beggar's change
And gave it to the rich

The day I tried to win
I dangled from the power lines
    And let the martyrs stretch
    Singing

    One more time around
    Might do it
    One more time around
    Might make it
    One more time around
    Might do it
    One more time around
The day I tried to live

    Words you say never seem
To live up to the ones
    Inside your head
    The lives we make
Never seem to ever get us anywhere
    But dead

The day I tried to live
I wallowed in the blood and mud with
    All the other pigs

I woke the same as any other day you know
I should have stayed in bed

The day I tried to win
I walled in the blood and mud with
    All the other pigs

And I learned that I was a liar
    Just like you

  • Written entirely by Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden lead singer considers this a companion song to "Fell On Black Days," which also deals with ennui and depression. Speaking about "The Day I Tried To Live" with Entertainment Weekly, Cornell said: "The attitude I was trying to convey was that thing that I think everyone goes through where you wake up in the morning and you just don’t know how you are going to get through the day, and you kind of just talk yourself into it. You may go through different moments of hopelessness and wanting to give up, or wanting to just get back into bed and say f--k it, but you convince yourself you’re going to do it again. And maybe this is the last time you’re going to do it, but it’s once more around."

    In A Little While Lyrics

    In A Little While
    Surely you'll be mine
In a little while I'll be there

    In a little while
This hurt will hurt no more
    I'll be home, love

When the night takes a deep breath
And the daylight has no air
If I crawl, if I come crawling home
    Will you be there

    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ohh
    In a little while
I won't blown by every breeze
    Friday night running
    To Sunday on my knees

    That girl, that girl
    She's mine
    And I've know her since

Since you were a little girl
    With Spanish eyes
    Oh, when I saw her
In a pram they pushed her by

    My, how you've grown
    Well it's been
    It's been a little while

    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ooh
    Ah ooh ooh
    Slow down my beating heart
Man dreams one day to fly
A man takes a rocket ship into the skies
He lives on a star that's dying in the night
    And follows in the trail
    The scatter of light

    Turn it on
    Turn it on
    You turn me on, mhmm

    Ah ooh ooh
    Slow down my beating heart
    Ah ooh ooh
    Slowly, slowly love
    Slow down my beating heart
    Slowly, slowly love
    Slow down my beating heart
    Slowly, slowly love

  • U2 played this song on their Elevation tour. Bono said it was written about a hangover - the night before appears to be a distant memory.
  • Bono mentions in the book U2 by U2 that the lyrics "A little girl with Spanish eyes/When I saw her first in a pram they pushed her by" refer to his wife, Alison. She was a year younger than him in school, and Bono was often teased as being a baby-snatcher for dating a younger girl. (thanks, Sara - Minneapolis, MN)
  • This was the last song that Joey Ramone listened to before he died in 2001. Bono said that Joey turned a song about a hangover into something religious.

Joey's brother Mickey recalled to Mojo May 2011 how this song was playing as he watched his bro pass away: "It was just so applicable and sad, hearing these words, 'In a little while, this hurt will hurt no more.' The song ended and the nurse said, 'He's gone now.' He went with the song, I thought, to that place where songs go after they're played - wherever that is."

    Break Free Lyrics

If you want it, take it
I should have said it before
Tried to hide it, fake it
    I can't pretend anymore

I only want to die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
I don't wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I've become who I really am

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I Break Free
'Cause I can't resist it no more

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
'Cause I can't resist it no more

    You were better, deeper
    I was under your spell
Like a deadly fear I am, babe
    On the highway to hell

I only want to die alive
Never by the hands of a broken heart
I don't wanna hear you lie tonight
Now that I've become who I really am

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
'Cause I can't resist it no more

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
'Cause I can't resist it no more

    (No more, baby, ooh)
Thought of your body, I came alive
It was lethal, it was fatal
In my dreams it felt so right
But I woke up every time
    Oh baby

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free
'Cause I can't resist it no more

This is the part when I say I don’t want it
I'm stronger than I've been before
This is the part when I break free

    Break Free
  • This song was produced by the Russian-German producer Zedd, who is best known for his hit tunes "Clarity" and "Stay The Night." The pair got together after Zedd overheard Grande performing at a label showcase while he was backstage, and mentioned to his team that he wanted to work with her. "[Grande's voice] is super-recognizable, it has a unique texture," he told Billboard magazine, "and really, that's all I'm looking for in a singer, is to have a voice that is really special and different from other voices you hear everyday."
  • The joy-infused song finds Grande celebrating her independence from a past love. Speaking with Billboard magazine, she called the experience of working with Zedd, "fantastic and super-experimental." Grande added: "I never thought I'd do an EDM song, but that was an eye-opening experience, and now all I want to do is dance."
  • The song features the awkward lyric, "Now that I become who I really are," written in order to force a rhyme from the song's previous line, "Never by the hands of a broken heart." Speaking with Time, Grande seemed sheepish about bending the laws of the English language, claiming the erroneous lyrics were Max Martin's and not hers. "I fought him on it the whole time," she told the magazine. "'I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyric, help me God!' Max was like, 'It's funny - just do it!' I know it's funny and silly, but grammatically incorrect things make me cringe sometimes."

Grande eventually conceded to the Swedish hitmaker. "I was like, whatever, let's do it and have some fun," she said. "I need to shake it off and let it go and be a little less rigid and old. I'm like, 90. I need to not be that old."

This wasn't Max Martin's first offense against the English language. Linguists recoiled with horror, for instance, at his "Sadness is beautiful. Loneliness is tragical" from Backstreet Boys' 2000 international hit "Shape of My Heart."
  • The music video was directed by Chris Marrs Pilier, who has also worked with The Black Keys and Britney Spears. The clip serves as a full-on homage to sci-fi cult movie classics as we see Grande play a space operative who battles aliens and saves the day during an intergalactic adventure. The visual later transitions to a spaceship dance party DJed by Zedd. "The inspiration for the 'Break Free' video is Barbarella, Star Wars and sort of like a retro take on space age, futuristic moments," Grande revealed to MTV News.

"I really wanted to do a take on what Barbarella wore for part of it," the singer added. "She did like 100 costume changes but my favorite outfit she wore was this beige sort of spacesuit that was very short and had these built in, like, hip pads type thing and I really wanted to do a take on that, so that's where the inspiration for the outfit came from."
  • Grande admitted to Billboard magazine that she initially hated her vocals, which she sings ahead of the beat. It was Max Martin who had the job of convincing her to sing in what she called a "more forward placement." "I was like no, no, no! Please just let me sing it how I would sing it," she mock-whined. "But he was like, 'Just try it. Trust me.'"

To Grande's surprise she loved the results. "I was so pleased when I tried something that I thought - no, that I knew I would hate."
  • Grande slurs her vocals a bit in this song. She says that when her grandmother heard the song, she told Ariana, "I don't know what the hell you're saying, but that's OK, because you sound so beautiful." (quote from a Rolling Stone interview)
  • Grande performed a stripped down version of the track on the first episode of Saturday Night Live's 40th season sat atop a piano. For her second number, Grande did a sultry and innuendo-filled version of "Love Me Harder" accompanied by the Weeknd.

    Who Are You? Lyrics

    Who Are You?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?

I woke up in a Soho doorway
    A policeman knew my name
He said "You can go sleep at home tonight
If you can get up and walk away"

I staggered back to the underground
And the breeze blew back my hair
    I remember throwin' punches around
    And preachin' from my chair

    [Chorus]
Well, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
I really want to know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
Tell me, who are you? (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)
'Cause I really want to know (Who are you? Who, who, who, who?)

I took the tube back out of town
    Back to the Rollin' Pin
I felt a little like a dying clown
With a streak of Rin Tin Tin

I stretched back and I hiccupped
And looked back on my busy day
Eleven hours in the Tin Pan
God, there's got to be another way

    Who are you?
Ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa ooh wa

    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?
    Who are you?
    Who, who, who, who?

    [Chorus]

    I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees

I spit out like a sewer hole
    Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

    [Chorus]

    Who Are You?
  • This song is based on a day in the life of Pete Townshend. It began with a very long meeting dealing with royalties for his songs: "Eleven hours in the Tin Pan, God, there's got to be another way." The "Tin Pan" he is referring to is "Tin Pan Alley" which is the name given to the collection of New York City-centered music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States. After this excruciating meeting he received a large check for royalties, left and went to a bar and got completely drunk. In that bar he encountered Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, who thought very highly of Pete for paving the way for Punk rock music. Townshend was conflicted because he feared The Who had sold out, and seeing The Sex Pistols, who were icons of rebellion, exasperated him even more. Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of New York). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f--k are you?" (thanks, Tim - Waterloo, Canada)
  • According to the 1985 Pete Townshend "My Generation" radio special, the song came out different than intended when Roger Daltrey sang it. Townshend said the song became a prayer from a destitute man. The man is on the street, looking up to the sky and asking God, "Who are you?"
  • The cover picture on the album features the band with drummer Keith Moon sitting on a chair that has the words "Not to be taken away" on the back of it. Moon passed away weeks after the photo was taken, and this was his last album. (thanks, Frank - Brandon, Canada)
  • Daltrey says the F-word twice in this song: "Who the f--k are you." It can still be heard today with the expletive in it on many Classic Rock stations. (thanks, Conrad - Los Angeles, CA)
  • This is the theme song for the TV show CSI (although when the huge "YEAAAHHH!!!!" is heard it's actually from "Won't Get Fooled Again," also by the Who, which was is spliced in). When CBS created spin-off shows, they used more Who songs: CSI New York uses "Baba O'Riley" and CSI Miami uses "Won't Get Fooled Again." The Who performed at a presentation for CBS executives and advertisers in 2004. (thanks, Mason - San Antonio, TX)
  • The documentary The Kids Are Alright shows The Who in a studio recording this song. John, Keith, and Pete do the clapping part, but John comes in early, which leads the rest of the group to laugh hysterically. John also amuses Keith by twirling his hands between claps. Pete mocks Keith fixing his hair, and at the end holds his hand out for a high five, and you can hear a smack and him screaming, "OW!"
  • Townshend has only vague memories of writing this song, as he composed it with a hangover. He explained: "I'd like to think that where the song came from wasn’t the feet that I was drunk when I did the demo, but the fact that I was f--king angry with [manager] Allen Klein, and that the song was an outlet for that anger."
  • Roger Daltrey recalled to Uncut magazine: "We were getting incredible accolades from some of the new Punk bands. They were saying how much they loved The Who, that we were the only band they'd leave alive after they'd taken out the rest of the establishment! But I felt very threatened by the Punk thing at first. To me it was like, 'Well, they think they're f---ing tough, but we're f---ing tougher.' It unsettled me in my vocals. When I listen back to 'Who Are You?' I can hear that it made me incredibly aggressive. But that's what that song was about. Being pissed and aggressive and a c---!"

"It was only a few years after that I realized what a great favor Punk did the business," Daltrey added. "We toured with The Clash in 1982, we took them to the US with us, and I used to f---ing love watching 'em. I'm still a huge Joe Strummer fan."

    Rum Lyrics

Starin’ at the prettiest part of this powder keg world
Sittin’ with the finest example of a beautiful girl
If we hadn't hit the brakes, we'd have no idea
    Paradise was hidin’ right here

Dippin’ our toes in the water
I don't care if it gets any hotter
It's you and me rememberin’ how to have fun
    Let's put our hearts together
Two parts love and a pinch of good weather
And top it all off with the sun
And mix it with Rum, mmm, mmm, mm, mm

We came out here to do a whole lotta nothin’
And we're doin’ pretty good I think
The only one thing we need to worry about
Is fillin’ up when the ice cubes clink

Dippin’ our toes in the water
I don't care if it gets any hotter
It's you and me rememberin’ how to have fun
    Let's put our hearts together
Two parts love and a pinch of good weather
And top it all off with the sun
And mix it with rum, mm, mm, mm, mm
Mix it with rum, mm, mm, mm, mm

The lucky folks go to the ocean
The lake's for the landlocked ones
We got a tarp in a truck bed
A kiddie pool, a slip and sleds
    Let that garden hose run

Dippin’ our toes in the water
I don't care if it gets any hotter
It's you and me rememberin’ how to have fun
    Let's put our hearts together
Two parts love and a pinch of good weather
And top it all off with the sun
And mix it with rum, mmm, mmm, mm, mm

  • The song's music video was directed by Peter Zavadil (Eric Church, Kip Moore, Lady Antebellum) and filmed in the Brothers Osborne's hometown. "We went back to our hometown of Deale, Maryland, just to kind of give people a little bird's eye view of what it's like where we come from," T.J. Osbourne explained. "We also wanted people to realize what really the perspective of 'Rum' was, which wasn't sitting on the beach. It was about really from the perspective of being in our hometown which is very blue collar, a lot of people who don't have money to go to the beach, so they kind of make their own little moments and their own paradise."

"'Rum' is about being in paradise no matter where you are," John Osborne added. "And to us, Deale was our own little blue collar paradise."
  • TJ and John Osbourne wrote this feel-good song about creating your own paradise with fellow Nashville songwriter Barry Dean. Speaking about the process that John and him go through when penning a tune, TJ said. "It all just kind of happens, you know. I mean it's really random. It comes and goes."

"A lot of it starts off with music and that kind of starts to spark up," he continued. "We're really feeling it, if it really gets us inspired musically, typically it's kind of hand-in-hand with the lyric starts to come out then. Sometimes we go in to writes with lyrical ideas, and it just all changes. Sometimes, it's never really one way, and that's kind of a good thing."

"When you're trying to do it a certain way, it seems to maybe work for a little while, but eventually, it just gets stuck and it just doesn't work anymore," TJ concluded. "We don't even like to go in to writes with any rules at all, not even, 'this has to be for us.' So, we like to go in and write a song and figure out the rest later."
