Rolling Stone Lyrics

Sometimes I feel I’m going nowhere
Sometimes I’m sure I never will
She said it’s ‘cause I’m always moving
I never notice ‘cause I never stand still

Sometimes I feel like I’m falling
Falling fast and falling free
She said "My darling you’re not falling,
Always looked like you were flying to me."

But I fear I’ve grown a Rolling Stone inside of me
She said "Oh don’t you know
The rolling stones stop at the sea,
And that’s where I’ll be."

Sometimes I’m sure I know no one
A thousand faces but no names
She said "My love you do know someone,
Oh and I know you back just the same."

"But I’m scared," I said, "what if this stone don’t slow down?"
"Oh just be aware," she said
"What goes up will come down
And when you do I’ll be around."

Oh when I’ve dragged this rolling stone across this land
I’ll make sure I leave this stone in her hand
For we both know too well, the rolling stones turn into sand
If they don’t find a place to stand

    Just you know why
    Why you and I
    Will bye and bye
    Know True Love Ways

    Sometimes we'll sigh
    Sometimes we'll cry
    And we'll know why
    Just you and I
    Know true love ways

    Throughout the days
    Our true love ways
Will bring us joys to share
    With those who really care

    Sometimes we'll sigh

    True Love Ways
  • This was co-written by Buddy and Norman Petty and recorded in October, 1958. Petty was Buddy Holly's first producer and owned the studio in Clovis, New Mexico where all of Buddy's first recordings were made (Lubbock did not have a recording studio at the time).
  • This and "It Doesn't Matter Any More" were Buddy's first recordings to use orchestral string arrangements, which accentuated his vocal mannerisms. The strings were arranged by Dick Jacobs. (thanks, David - Lubbock, TX, for above 2)
  • The song's haunting melody was inspired by one of Buddy's favorite black Gospel hymns, "I'll Be Alright," which was recorded by The Angelic Gospel Singers. This song was likely inspired by his wife Maria Elena. (thanks, Samuel - Kilsyth, United Kingdom)
  • Notable covers include versions by Mickey Gilley, Peter & Gordon, and The Royal Philharmonic.
  • This wasn't released until after Holly's death in 1959. After he died in a plane crash, the album The Buddy Holly Story was released, which contained many of his early hits. This album came out a few months later and included many of his lesser-known or never released songs.

    Scare Away The Dark Lyrics

Well, sing, sing at the top of your voice
Love without fear in your heart
Feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can Scare Away The Dark

    We wish our weekdays away
    Spend our weekends in bed
    Drink ourselves stupid
    And work ourselves dead
And all just because that's what mom and dad said we should do

We should run through the forest
We should swim in the streams
We should laugh, we should cry
We should love, we should dream
We should stare at the stars and not just the screens
You should hear what I'm saying and know what it means

To sing, sing at the top of your voice
Love without fear in your heart
Feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

Well, we wish we were happier, thinner and fitter
We wish we weren't losers and liars and quitters
We want something more not just nasty and bitter
We want something real not just hash tags and Twitter

It's the meaning of life and it's streamed live on YouTube
But I bet Gangnam Style will still get more views
We're scared of drowning, flying and shooters
But we're all slowly dying in front of fucking computers

So sing, sing at the top of your voice
Oh, love without fear in your heart
Can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark

But homie ain't nothing change hold down, G's up
I see Xzibit in the Cutt that nigga roll that weed up
If you watch how I move you'll mistake me for a player or pimp
Been hit wit a few shells but I don't walk wit a limp
In the hood then the ladies saying "50 you hot"
They like me, I want them to love me like they love 'Pac
But holla in New York them niggas'll tell ya I'm loco
And the plan is to put the rap game in a choke hold
I'm feelin' focused man, my money on my mind
I got a mill out the deal and I'm still on the grind
Now shawty said she feeling my style, she feeling my flow
Her girlfriend want to get bi and they ready to go

    [Chorus: x2]

My flow, my show brought me the dough
That bought me all my fancy things
My crib, my cars, my pools, my jewels
Look, nigga, I came up and I ain't changed

And you should love it, way more then you hate it
Nigga you mad? I thought that you'd be happy I made it

    In Da Club
  • Produced by Dr. Dre and Mike Elizondo, the track was created for Eminem's group D-12 to rap over, with the intention of using it on the 8 Mile soundtrack. It never came together for D-12, but after 50 Cent signed with Dre's Shady/Aftermath label, he was brought into the studio and offered the track. According to Elizondo, he spent an hour writing the lyrics and recorded most of his vocals that night.

The song was released as 50's first single, and it became a huge hit, topping the US Hot 100 for nine weeks. Predictably, it was especially popular in clubs, where some DJs played it twice in a row to satisfy demand.
  • This was he first song 50 recorded with Dr. Dre, and his first on a major label. After being dropped by Columbia Records without releasing an album, 50's mix tapes became wildly popular in underground scene and he was heavily bootlegged on the Internet. This got the attention of Dr. Dre and Eminem, who signed him to very lucrative deal with their label, Shady/Aftermath Records.
  • The video shows 50 going through training at Shady/Aftermath Records to become a superstar. It proved prophetic as 50 did become a star. The album sold 872,000 copies the first week it was released. Eminem is the only rapper to sell more records in a week.
  • This won for Best Rap Video at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. 50 also won for Best New Artist In A Video.
  • 50 Cent namechecks five different rappers in this song: Dr. Dre, Eminem, Xzibit, Lloyd Banks and Tupac. While the song is about going to a club in thug style, it covers a lot of ground, including some of 50's backstory ("been hit with a few shells").
  • Beyoncé recorded a version with different lyrics that was circulated on the Internet. Like the original, it became very popular in dance clubs. Her lyrics take the point of view of a girls' night out, and is called "Sexy Lil' Thug."
  • Mary J. Blige used the beat in song called "Hooked," which she recorded with P. Diddy.
  • Other rappers who used this beat include Bubba Sparxxx, who did a version called "In The Mudd," and Cadillac Tah, one of 50 Cent's rivals, who did an angry version called "There's A Snitch In The Club." Beyoncé and Mary J. Blige also recorded variations of it. Parody versions include "In Da Pub" by British DJ 50 Pence, and "In Da Dome," which was recorded for The Calgary Flames during the 2004 NHL playoffs. A Finnish rap group called Urbaanilegenda recorded a version called Klubilla (In Da Club in Finnish). (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The line, "Go shorty, it's your birthday," dates back to a 1994 song by Luther Campbell of The 2 Live Crew called "It's Your Birthday," where he rapped, "Go Sheila, it's your birthday." The owner of Campbell's copyright sued 50 Cent, accusing him of stealing the line.
  • In 2007, this song was used in a commercial for Vitamin Water, with an orchestra playing the instrumental and 50 Cent conducting. 50 really did have his money on his mind: he was an early investor in Vitamin Water, and made a huge profit when the company was acquired by Coca-Cola.
  • This song became a hip-hop classic in part because of the line at the beginning, which is a much more quick and contemporary birthday tune than "Happy Birthday."

"Every day it's someone's birthday," 50 said. "So it never loses it's relevance."
  • This was chosen as 50 Cent's debut single by chance. "We couldn't decide on the first single from Get Rich," Eminem recalled on Rap Genius . "It was going to be either 'If I Can't' or 'In Da Club.' We were torn, so me, 50, Paul, Chris Lighty, and Jimmy Iovine decided to flip a coin."

50 recalled to NME that he stayed out of the argument. "I didn't want to stir the pot," he said. "In the end, though, they were deadlocked, and so they asked me and I told them, real quiet: "In Da Club". And that was it. The rest was history."

    Hebrews Lyrics

    Hebrews
  • The title track of Say Anything's Hebrews album, this song features Brian Sella, who is the frontman of the New Jersey rock band The Front Bottoms.
  • The album title and many of its lyrics reference Say Anything frontman Max Bemis' Jewish upbringing. The twelve autobiographical tracks were written in the order they appear on the album, and are evenly split between the time before the birth of Bemis' daughter Lucy on February 11, 2013 and afterwards.

"It's a grandiose-sounding record about the small things that kind of eat away at you," he explained to Billboard magazine. "I don't think I would've been forced to confront the things I confront on the record if it wasn't for the impending birth of my daughter. If you listen to the lyrics, everything that comes before her birth is worrying about being a bad father or not being ready to be a father, and everything after her birth is sort of redemptive. That's the narrative arc of the record -- not that I've ever needed a reason to confront my demons otherwise, but that was the catalyst."

    How to Rob
  • 50 recorded this with The Trackmasters, a group of hip-hop producers affiliated with Columbia Records. 50 Cent signed a deal with Columbia in 1999, but they never released his album. Instead, 50 released it himself as a bootleg single, where it was widely circulated. He wrote this song because he wasn't making any money from his deal with Trackmasters and he was sitting back looking at the people who had money, saying "I wish I could Have that chain." Then he realized, "I could have that chain, if he ever comes into the 'hood and he ain't paying attention." (thanks, Kyle - London, ON)
  • This was included on Power of the Dollar, an as-yet-unreleased album that should have been his debut for Columbia. Instead it was not released and 50 was dropped from the label, supposedly because high bootlegging was going to eat into record sales.
  • As this circulated among the mix-tape New York underground the subsequent buzz led to Eminem's offer to sign 50 to the Shady/Aftermath label. Eminem has said that 50 is his favorite rapper.
  • This outlines how 50 would go about robbing a variety of famous artists like Jay-Z, Master P, Kirk Franklin , Blackstreet, Brian McKnight, and any other hip-hop/R&B artist you can think of. He intended it as a joke, but many other rappers took it seriously and started dissing 50, which had the effect of making him more popular.
  • After this became an underground hit, 50 was shot nine times in a drive-by outside his grandmother's house. Again, this added to his street-cred and made him even more popular.
  • Because 50 didn't have a lot of expensive jewelry or cars, he had to find something else to rap about. He called this "An outsider's desperate attempt to fit in."
  • The hook is sung by the Madd Rapper, otherwise known as Deric "D-Dot" Angelettie, who specializes in comical skits and raps. This appears on his 1999 album, Tell 'Em Why You Madd.
  • 50 laid off the attacks on his 2003 release Get Rich or Die Tryin', not wanting to gain a reputation for simply dissing other rappers. It didn't hurt sales, as it moved 872,000 copies its first week.
  • This was used on the 1999 movie In Too Deep, starring Omar Epps and LL Cool J.

    Overboard Lyrics

    Overboard
  • The title track of The Verve Pipe's Overboard album started as a love story about a girl swimming in Lake Superior and then turned more somber. "'There's a girl in Michigan, up in Lake Superior,'" frontman Brian Vander Ark told Billboard magazine, reciting the start of the song's chorus. "The puzzle as a songwriter was: Why do we care? After weeks of trying to figure that out, I realized that we would care if she were dead."
  • Vander Ark wrote the song with his friend, acclaimed actor Jeff Daniels. The Verve Pipe frontman reached out to his pal with the beginning idea of the song, a chorus and a verse, and Daniels sent back his own completed version, along with a 2,000-word short story. "When Brian sent it to me, the song was already well on its way, I just helped him focus it a little bit," Daniels told Billboard. "He's always been a strong songwriter, but he seems to be more and more interested in being a writer who writes songs. That's harder than trying to write towards some corporate idea of what a good song should be."

"By staying true to himself, he's writing things only he sees, only he hears, and only he can write," Daniels continued. "The hope is that the listener will identify with the characters in his story-put-to-music as people they might know, recognize, and imagine as real. If they do, like any well told story, the song works. 'Overboard' is a good example of that kind of writing."

    Heavy Metal Lyrics

    Head bangers in leather
Sparks fly in the dead of the night
    It all comes together
When they shoot out the lights
    Fifty thousand watts of power
    And it's pushin' overload
The beast is ready to devour
All the metal they can hold
    Reachin' overload
    Start to explode

    [Chorus]
It's your one way ticket to midnight
    Call it Heavy Metal
Higher than high, feelin' just right
    Call it heavy metal
    Desperation on a red line
    Call it heavy metal noise

    Tight pants and lipstick
    She's riding on razor's edge
She holds her own against the boys
Yea, cuts through the crowd just like a wedge
Ohh, can you feel the static
    So many contacts being made
    We've got up front fanatics
    Tearing down the barricade
    To reach the stage
    Can you feel the rage

    Heavy Metal
  • This song was used in the science fiction movie of the same name, and was also featured on the movie's soundtrack album (the film was based on a comic book). Released in 1981, Heavy Metal was an animated film with enough cartoon nudity to get an R rating (now known as NC-17) in the US.

Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick, Journey, and Devo were also on the soundtrack.
  • Hagar wrote this song with Jim Peterik , who was a member of the band Survivor at the time. Hagar had just signed with Geffen Records, whose executive John Kalodner had signed Survivor and deployed Peterik to help .38 Special write songs. Kalodner arranged the writing session between Hagar and Peterik, which took place in San Francisco.

At first, the pair had trouble coming up with ideas, but then Hagar remembered that his manager had mentioned the Heavy Metal movie was in production and looking for songs, so they decided to write one for the film. They came up with the idea of two metalheads attending a rock show, and the session moved smoothly, which Hagar and Peterik coming up with riffs and lyrics based on those moments of anticipation when waiting for the band to come onstage.

They recorded a demo of the song, and Hagar later recorded it as part of his first Geffen album. An alternate version also earned a spot in the film, but not as the main theme: that honor went to "Heavy Metal (Takin' A Ride)" by Don Felder.

  • This single was the follow-up to the hit "Constant Craving" and it's chiefly remembered for its video, which was, along with its romantic lyrics, a satire of the long-running Lawrence Welk Show. Lang parodied her own androgynous image by appearing in a yellow ball gown with fringe and daisies in her hair while singing about falling in love amid violin music and bubbles floating on the set. Her fans were very amused and she continues to get requests for this song when she performs. (thanks, Michael - Santa Barbara, CA)
  • "Chatelaine" is borrowed from the Canadian women's magazine of the same name. The publication once chose Lang - a native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada - as Woman of the Year.

    Hollow Life Lyrics

    Am I asleep?
    Or have I died
    (wanting peace)
    We fall in space
    (wanting peace)
    We can't look down,
    Death may come,
(something takes a hold of me)
    Peace I have found
(something takes a hold of me)
I want to say my whole life,
    Am I asleep?
    We fall down.
    We come to this place
    Falling through time,
    Living a Hollow Life,
    Always we're taking
    Waiting for signs,
    Hollow lives
Is there ever any wonder why we look to the sky?
    Search in vane?
    Asking why?
    All alone?
    Where is god?
    Looking down?
    We don't know? [Repeat x2]
    We fall in space
    We can't look down
    Death may come.
    Peace I have found

    Hollow Life
  • This song is about people's helpless belief in God, hoping that he will help them in their time of need, but rarely doing so. (thanks, Paul - Westlake, OH)
  • The entire album saw Korn trying to revive the new-metal genré, which they viewed as "soulless."
  • Lead singer Jonathan Davis said that the songs on the album dealt with subjects like being an outcast and getting sick of being a victim.

    Taxi Dancing Lyrics

I think that it's high time we had a talk
I think that we're making a big mistake
I've been feeling lately the magic is gone
Are we just together for convenience sake, baby

    I don't believe it (Feeling)
    I don't think that's true (Tied down)
It'll just pass if we allow it to (Need to break free)
It's just a stage we're going through (They say clean cuts)
I think you're just restless for something new (Heal much faster)

Baby, feeling like we pay our dime
And all we get in return
Is a piece of each other's time

    Are we just Taxi Dancing
Lost somewhere in a slow dance for two
And the band that was playing
Has finally stopped playing our favorite song

    Are we just taxi dancing
You're paying for me and I'm paying for you
And are we holding on to a feeling with desperation

    Don't know if you're right
    Don't know if you're wrong
Seems to me we haven't danced for long

    Don't make it hard (I won't)
Don't make it easy (Hold you)
We'll just walk away (If you)
At the end of the song (Must go)

Baby. put one last nickel in the jukebox
Give that love we once felt
    Just one final spin around

    'Cause we're just Taxi Dancing
Lost somewhere in a slow dance for two

And the band that was playing
Has finally stopped playing our favorite song
    And we're just dancing
And the band that was playing
Has finally stopped playing our favorite song
    Are we just Taxi Dancing
You're paying for me and I'm paying for you
And are we holding on to each other in desperation

  • This 1984 single is featured on the soundtrack of the movie Hard To Hold, which was supposed to be Rick Springfield's film acting break. Springfield had acted on television before, as Dr. Noah Drake on General Hospital, as well as being a popular musician. The film was a flop, with critics saying it should have been named "Hard To Watch," but the soundtrack was somewhat successful with three US Top 40 hits: "Don't Walk Away," "Bop 'Til You Drop," and the top five hit "Love Somebody."
  • This single, which is a duet with Randy Crawford, is about a couple whose marriage has become a routine and the love is gone, but they've stayed together out of habit and fear of being alone. (thanks, Michael - Santa Barbara, CA, for above 2)

(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes Lyrics

Oh, I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused
But since their wings have got rusted
You know, the angels want to wear my red shoes
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain
That's when I knew that I could not refuse
And I won't get any older, now that angels want to wear my red shoes

Oh, oh, I was watching while you're dancing away
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway
How come everybody wants to be your friend?
You know that it still hurts me just to say it

Oh, I know that she's disgusted (oh, why's that?)
Because she's feeling so abused (oh, that's too bad)
She gets tired of the lust (oh, I'm so sad)
But it's so hard to refuse
Can you say that I'm too old
When the angels have stolen my red shoes?

Oh, oh I said, "I'm so happy I could die"
She said, "Drop dead," then left with another guy
That's what you get if you go chasing after vengeance
Ever since you got me punctured, this has been my sentence

Oh, I used to be disgusted
But now I try to be amused
But since their wings have got rusted
You know, the angels want to wear my red shoes
But when they told me 'bout their side of the bargain
That's when I knew that I could not refuse
And I won't get any older, now that the angels want to wear my red shoes

Oh, I won't get any older, now the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes
Red shoes, the angels want to wear my red shoes

(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes
  • In this song, Elvis makes a deal with the angels, who have come down to Earth because their wings have rusted. Needing footwear, they grant Costello immortality in exchange for his red shoes.

His estranged girlfriend, however, is not impressed and doesn't share in his enthusiasm, telling him to drop dead and leaving the club with another guy.

Costello wrote the song backward, starting with the club scene where the girl leaves with another guy. From there, he worked in the idea of making the deal with the angels so he stops aging. He was just 22 years old at the time, and wasn't sure why he was writing about not getting older.
  • Costello wrote this in 10 minutes while on the Inter-City train to Liverpool between the Runcorn and Lime Street stations. He didn't have a recorder with him, so he kept the song in his head until he got off the train and made it to his mother's house, where he found one of his old guitars and played the song over and over until he had it recorded to memory.
  • Nick Lowe produced the album. Costello had recently signed his record deal and didn't have a backing band, so Lowe brought in the group Clover. Alex Call, who was their lead singer, told us the story: "Clover got together in the late '60s. It was four of us, we made two albums on Fantasy - we were buddies with Creedence Clearwater Revival. We got dropped, and then Huey Lewis and our keyboard player, Shawn Hopper, joined the band and we kind of made another run at it. In the mid-'70s, we were going down to Los Angeles a lot and playing a club called The Palamino.

The Palamino was this great Country and Western place. We were more of a rock band really, but we kind of were country. At one gig, Nick Lowe was there with Paul Carrack. Nick had been in the band Brinsley Schwartz, and The Brinsleys were big fans of the early Clover albums. So one thing led to another, and Jake Riviera, who was Elvis' manager, signed us to come to England, and we signed with Phonogram over there, which is Mercury here. Elvis Costello was at that time Dec McManus, he was using his real name. He was just this mild-mannered, meek little songwriter who would hang out around Stiff Records, which was our management office. Elvis once said, 'Man, I wish I could sing like you.'

He went to cut some demos, and they used Clover. Huey and I did not participate in those because they had no need for us, but I remember they went and cut at this little place called Pathways - a little 8-track studio so small that all you had just enough space to play your instrument. They went in that first session, and in one session they cut 'Alison' and 'Red Shoes' and 'Less Than Zero,' these classic songs. I remember hearing them at this rock 'n' roll house we lived in outside of Headley, South of London called the Headley Grange House. John McFee brought back a reel-to-reel tape on one of those old Wollensak tape recorders. He played this stuff, and I mean, I was ready to quit after hearing that - it was so astounding. They did like three 8-12 hour sessions, and that was My Aim Is True.

That is a classic record, just unbelievable. We were managed by the same guys and we hung out a lot with Nick. Nick produced a lot of our early sessions there. We made two albums with Mutt Lange, and nothing happened with the band. We came close in England to breaking a single, but it didn't work and we ended up breaking up." (Check out our interview with Alex Call.)
  • In 2011, Costello performed this on Sesame Street as "The Monster Went and Ate My Red 2." He had his numbers lined up from 1-10, but Cookie Monster (who does eat other things beside cookies, by the way), kept eating the red number 2, creating a counting problem.
  • This song tells a strange story, but not nearly as strange as the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Red Shoes, which inspired a Kate Bush song of the same name. In that story, a girl puts on a pair of red shoes that make her dance uncontrollably. She can't take them off, so she has her feet cut off, only to have the shoes continue to dance with her amputated feet inside them.
